22nd Annual Branchburg Country Fair is Sept. 28

The Branchburg Country Fair Committee met at White Oak Park in August for its annual photo. Standing, left to right: Marie Caprio, Steve Harris, Patti Rees, Henry Ihling, Rita Bouwman, Bob Bouwman, Shavaun Gliksman. Not pictured are Vince Damiano, Sgt. Ken Kaczorek, Amy Silva, Jennifer Perillo, and Maria DeSimone.

Mark your calendars, Branchburg’s biggest community event, the Branchburg Country Fair at White Oak Park, will be on Saturday, Sept. 28. (Rain date, Sept. 29.) The free fair starts around 11 am and runs until fireworks after dusk. There will be all-day entertainment, children’s activities, great food, crafters, community groups, and local businesses. The tent is busiest in the morning until mid afternoon. This is a good way to learn about local groups, to meet new people and catch up with old friends. Another fun way to enjoy the fair is to participate in the Branchburg Family Feud. “Families” will play a local version of the TV game. To reserve a time slot, call Recreation, 908-526-1300, ext. 188. Kids of all ages can participate in a scavenger hunt. They can fill their “passport” with stamps found at various participating tables, and collect a prize when they’ve collected them all. Passports and prizes will be at the information tent. The “Branchburg’s Got Talent” show is planning to have two separate competition divisions –- one for youth and one for those in 9th grade and up. You must live in

Branchburg or be a Somerville High School student. There will be judges reviewing the acts and prizes. Email branchburgtalent@ gmail.com to register. Solos and groups are welcome. There will also be vintage baseball games. The Liberty Base Ball Club of New Brunswick will host and play “base ball” according to old-time rules, customs, equipment and uniform specifications. The Branchburg Communications Committee will be hosting a “Best of Branchburg Photo Contest.” The top three photos will be on display at the fair. Visitors who go to the Communications table will get to vote for the winning photo. Also on the schedule will be demonstrations, military displays, the State Police helicopter, the sheriff’s office, local emergency

services and Operation Life Saver. There will be entertainment all day, including Tom Klimchock, country western singer; Lara Grant, keyboard, guitar & vocals; The Ralph James Project, Branchburg residents who sing soft rock; the bands Recurve with Seth Choynake and Loyalty to Me. The headline band is the up-and-coming The Green Planet Band, which “Recycles Rock n’ Roll, One Song at a Time!” The renowned Branchburg Country Fair fireworks will begin at 8 pm. Greg Gonzalez, an original member of the fair committee, managed the fireworks for 21 years, until his unexpected passing in May. He was a dedicated worker and volunteered for many organizations in the area. The fair will end with “The Greg Gonzalez Memorial Fireworks Show.” The committee also dedicates the fair in the memory of Barbara Bye, who passed away in January. She was a Branchburg Township Committee member when she proposed the idea of an annual Branchburg Country Fair. She was a past member of the fair committee. So come to White Oak Park for lunch and stay for dinner. For more info, go to www. branchburgcountryfair.org, visit Facebook (Branchburg Country Fair), email branchburgcountryfair@gmail. com or call Bob or Rita Bouwman at 908-526-3094. The Last Balloon -- The 37th annual QuickChek New Jersey Festi-

val of Ballooning had a successful weekend on July 26-28, with good weather allowing all five scheduled mass ascensions. The festivities concluded Sunday evening, and the balloon in this photo is likely the last one of the festival. The photo was taken by Darby Ahrens about 7:30 pm Sunday, looking west along Harlan School Road in Branchburg. Branchburg got a mention on News 12 New Jersey when a TV crew covered a balloon landing in a yard on Watchung Trail. Neighbors pitched in to fold the deflated air bag.

In August, Township Administrator Greg Bonin told The Branchburg News that the state court system, through our local vicinage, is requiring the township to sign an affordable housing agreement with the Fair Share Housing Center before the end of August or the township could lose its court-protected immunity which expires on Sept. 5. “This negotiated agreement, the product of a lawsuit from the Fair Share Housing Center and 11 developers, will detail the types and locations of the developments the township is being forced to build,” Bonin stated. This will certainly be a discussion item in the fall and, as of this writing, the township was expected to take some action during its meeting of Aug. 26 in an effort to protect itself from the builder lawsuits. Bonin advised residents to watch the Township website for news about affordable housing – www.branchburg.nj.us. Videos of meetings are also available there. Residents are also encouraged to contact members of the Township Committee or Administration if they would like to learn more about this matter.

River Road Bridge Replacement With Funding by NJDOT Gets Township Support

Moon Day at RVCC -- The 50th anniversary of the first moon land-

ing was celebrated on July 20 at Raritan Valley Community College in a series of space-related events and activities for the public. In the photo above, near the 3M Observatory, attendees were treated to an opportunity to look at the sun through a 16-in.reflecting telescope equipped with solar filters. In the planetarium there were several space-themed shows and activities. A sundial was set up to show the time based on a person’s height. There was also a scale calibrated to convert a person’s earth weight to moon weight. For example, it showed that a man weighing 172.8 lbs in Branchburg would weigh only 28.8 lbs on the moon.

Replacement by the state of Branchburg’s River Road Bridge over the Raritan Valley Railroad (known as the wooden bridge) took a step forward on Aug. 12 when the Township Committee unanimously adopted a resolution outlining the replacement. The resolution supporting bridge construction had been requested by the New Jersey Department of Transporation (NJDOT). The existing bridge, built about 1886, was closed indefinitely by NJDOT on June 5, 2019, after inspections determined it was unsafe for passage. As of midAugust, there was no timetable for completion of the new bridge, but Township Administrator Greg Bonin told The Branchburg News the job might take about a year. He said meetings with NJDOT representatives have been productive and he singled out

state Sen. Kip Bateman for his help. Bateman, a Branchburg native, is a former Township Committee member and mayor. Bonin said the previously discussed idea of installing a temporary bridge at the site is now off the table. Important points of Resolution No. 2019-185 follow: The Township Committee supports the construction by NJDOT of a permanent two-lane bridge based on the following: The Township and New Jersey Transit (NJT) will be responsible for maintenance of the new bridge. The Township will be reponsible for the structural components of the bridge. The Township and NJT will enter into an agreement pertaining to these maintenance responsibilities. While the disposition of the current bridge components has

not been decided, NJDOT would work with the Township to allow the Township to potentially preserve, for historical purposes, the major structural elements while meeting all regulations, including those of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The NJDOT will seek guidance, but not need approval, from the Township on the aesthetic design of the new bridge. The bridge will be built for a 72,000 pound weight limit, but the Township will retain jurisdiction over the weight limits on the roads appoaching the bridge. The full cost of replacement of the current bridge with a new permanent two-lane bridge together with all required improvements and aquisitions pertaining thereto will be paid for by NJDOT.

Troop 185 Scouts recently had the honor of visiting the grave of Sergeant First Class Benjamin L. Sebban at Arlington National Cemetery. Benjamin is the son of Branchburg Gold Star Mom Barbara Walsh. A paratrooper and senior medic in the U.S. Army, Benjamin was awarded the Silver Star by President George W. Bush for the heroic bravery he showed during combat

operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Specifically, on March 17, 2007, Benjamin placed himself in a position of grave danger to warn his unit when he noticed a flatbed truck filled with explosives racing straight toward their patrol base. Although mortally wounded, Benjamin made it to his medic station after the explosion, where he spent his final moments giving first aid to other wounded soldiers.

Scouts and family members were truly humbled and moved when visiting Benjamin’s grave. Scout Ryan Chmura led the group in prayer while each scout placed a red, white, or blue flower at the site. The scouts also placed flowers at the graves of two other soldiers with Branchburg connections: the grave of Private Evelyn Sophia Robinson and the grave of Colonel Andrew B. Jasinski. --submitted by Christy Bouziotis

Encounter with a Gray Ghost

February fourth, late afternoon, marked a close encounter with a gray ghost I have been chasing for decades. Face to face at 18 paces, the apparition materialized out of the river’s mist. So close, our eyes met as I looked unavoidably through the lens of its honeybrown/yellow eyes and into its soul. Just as an opening act raises the energy of the audience, three terrified deer ran past moments before on the same trail, and I do not use the word “terrified” lightly. I quickly picked up the camera in anticipation of more deer running through the constricted pass. I was sure there would be a second act, though I had no idea what it

The elusive gray ghost of Native American mythology appears out of the river’s mist, as we stare into each other’s eyes.

might be. To my amazement, shock and awe, a coyote appeared. I always wondered if I could tell a coyote from someone’s pet dog. Well I’m here to tell you, the recognition

was instant and left no doubt which canine version stood before me. The eyes, the yellow eyes, commanded full attention at that close a distance. The coyote’s mottled gray fur blended so perfectly into the leaf-covered ground, its eyes appeared as two gleaming orbs hovering, unattached, in the air, above the ground. The eyes, those yellow eyes, were a personal invitation afforded to me as a momentary portal through which to view the heart of a wild spirit. The coyote is a mythological character come to life whose reputation for intelligence and adaptability is well-documented in ancient tribes’ oral histories. Amazingly, our interaction with coyotes in ancient times has continued unabated to this day. The coyote appropriately goes by any one of several aliases -- yote, song dog, brush wolf, prairie wolf -- so fitting for a reputed trickster as described in the myths of many early cultures.

Originating in the West, coyotes have migrated to the East on their own, as well as spread by intentional redistribution. The first documented sighting of a coyote in NJ is reported to be 1939 and today have been reported in each of New Jersey’s 21 counties. Song dogs have been legal game in NJ since 1998. Many states have been conduct-

ing genetic studies on coyotes and some, like NJ, require the killing of a coyote by legal means or as roadkill, to be immediately reported to the state division of fish and wildlife. The eastern coyote is generally much larger than its western cousin. The largest coyote has been reported at 55 pounds, though they average much less. continued on page 7

Gray Ghost Encounter

DNA sampling has documented coyotes and wolves have mated, which may explain the larger size and the color variation in their coats. Coyotes will, on rare occasion, mate with dogs, and the hybrid offspring are referred to as coydogs. Coyotes are now well established in our area and often, a red or gray fox will be mistaken for a coyote. The visual differences between the two species are dramatic -- size and coloration the most obvious. (Images of a coyote and red fox can be seen at https://winterbearrising. wordpress.com/.) Coyotes have always been at the center of controversy, especially in the West where livestock depredation is a concern. Their adaptability includes a diet so varied as to take advantage of whatever fare is available. That menu may include pets, insects, plants or poultry. Coyotes have been trapped, poisoned and shot and yet persist in viable populations in close proximity to man, thus have earned a ghost-like reputation. Someone once said of a coyote, ‘if you turned a coyote loose on a tennis court it could disappear behind the net!” In the court of popular opinion, defenders stand opposed. A doctor I know was nonplussed at my excitement of encountering a coyote. He regularly sees them on his property and one often comes to play with his 110-pound German shepherd. Another strong proponent and

defender of coyotes is Geri Vistein, who has written a great book, “I Am Coyote.” Geri also has a website and Facebook page, “Coyote Center, Carnivores, Ecology and Coexistence.” Geri explains that coyotes are an indispensible part of our living web of life and points out coyote management errors that add to the problem of negative human/coyote interaction. How ever you view coyotes, this wild and untamed spirit, wrapped in gray fur, is worthy of admiration. If you love dogs, it is not a leap to extend that feeling to their wild cousins. But be warned, not everyone shares that love. It is quite a feat for any species to have flourished in times gone by and still maintain genetically viable numbers in the midst of an expanding human population and chronic loss of natural habitat. The coyote remains more of a mythological character of dubious existence, as it is rarely ever seen. You are more likely to hear a chorus of melodious howls on a cold and still winter night than to ever see a coyote. As with any sound in the night, its source and location are left to pure speculation which only deepens the mystery of the gray ghost’s existence. Doubt creeps in when your eyes fail to confirm what your ears hear. For more information on coyotes, see the link on the NJ Fish and Wildlife site, https://www. state.nj.us/dep/fgw/coyote_info. htm.

Every year, Americans buy 18 million new bicycles and discard millions of old ones, abandoning many more unused in basements, sheds, and garages. Most of these end up in already overburdened landfills. Meanwhile, poor people overseas need cheap, non-polluting transportation to get to jobs, markets, customers, and schools. Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 157,000 bicycles, 4,700 used sewing machines, and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in developing countries. Pedals for Progress isn’t just donating used bicycles: It’s also helping developing

world economies by promoting selfsustaining bicycle repair businesses. Steady employment for these adults is vital to the development and success for these economies. It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle. A $10 donation is suggested toward shipping costs per bike. All cash and material donations are fully deductible, and a receipt will be available at the collection site. Pedals for Progress also accepts working portable sewing machines. Pedals for Progress is a 501 © (3) corporation and a registered charity in the states of NJ, NY, PA, CT, VT, IA. Brochures explaining this inno-

vative program will be available at the collection site. P4P seeks donations of wrenches for its overseas shops. By Rebecca Gensel Superintendent, Branchburg Township School District For many of us, September brings the promise of new beginnings as the school year gets underway. For our students, there are new friends to make, new teachers to meet, and new learning to acquire. For the adults in the schools, there are new students who will look to us for inspiration and learning, new opportunities to touch a child’s life and support their growth, and new challenges to meet as we implement the curriculum and practices of the school year. As the television commercial so humorously references, it really is “the most wonderful time of the year.” A primary focus for our schools this year will be the integration of the New Jersey Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies into the work we do with students. These competencies encompass the skills that students need to be successful learners in school and, later in life, successful adults in the workforce. The New Jersey SEL competencies are designed to

help students develop the abilities, perspectives (understanding their own and recognizing others’) and behaviors that support academic and personal responsibility. The specific competencies that are identified within the NJ Framework include self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, self-management, and relationship skills. Additionally, as we look forward to the new academic year, one of the most significant and exciting components is that the District will be embarking on the process to develop a 5-year Strategic Plan. This plan will serve as the rudder that guides our educational ship forward, helping to ensure that our course remains relevant to the needs of our students and our community. Please keep an eye out for additional information and the ways in which the Branchburg community will be able to contribute to our goal setting process. I am looking forward to a year of productive growth with our students, our staff, and our community.

A Summary of Summer

In early August, Recreation Summer Camp wrapped up its summer of fun, and the annual National Night Out event held its annual community-building evening of gratitude and athleticism at White Oak Park. Audrey Henry, administrative secretary of the Recreation Dept., provided The Branchburg News with the following descriptions of the summer: Summer Camp 2019 Summer Camp season came to an end on Aug. 2. Our campers enjoyed their experience with the enthusiasm and planning of our wonderful camp staff. They participated in theme days, crafts, sports, movie days and fundraising activities. Each summer, the staff talks to the campers about giving back to others in some way, and each year fundraising is done for a family in need. This summer the kids were “Playing for Grayson.” Grayson Schmalz is a sweet, five-year-old little boy from Warren County, who is battling leukemia. Each camp site had multiple fundraising activities -- bake sales, penny wars, pizza days and pie in your eye contests. The Teen Scene campers, once again, created, constructed and

operated carnival games out of recycled materials. Rec Director Glenn Burrell commented, “Super creative ideas and probably the most impressive was the working vending machine! Camper Calum Dingwall was the mastermind behind that project. Nice work!” The White Oak campers had the opportunity to participate in Carnival Day complete with music and prizes, all in an effort to raise more money for Grayson. The biggest fundraiser of all was “So You Think You Can Dance.” With an audience of over 300 filling the bleachers at BCMS, and over 100 excited campers and counselors showing off their fabulous dance moves, that night alone raised over $1,700 for Grayson, To wind down the summer season we celebrated National Night Out, in thanking our Police, Fire, and Rescue personnel for keeping us safe and being there for us when we need them most. The Charity softball game and BBQ that followed, rounded off the fundraising in Playing for Grayson. That evening a check for $7,000 was presented to the family from the generosity of Branchburg camper families. A heartfelt thank-you goes to all who gave and supported this thoughtful effort.

A roster of 121 runners took to the 5K race course through White Oak Park

The National Night Out 5K and Softball Game

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, Branchburg celebrated National Night Out, along with the rest of the nation, as an expression of gratitude to our police, fire and rescue workers for all that they do to keep us safe. The annual Branchburg 5K foot race and a charity softball game were on the schedule. The day was a hot one and the weather was questionable, however we were spared the rain that the rest of NJ experienced. Our dedicated Summer Camp staff showed up to help set up, marshal the 5K course and warm up our little runners for the 100-yard Fun Run. Next up was the 5K Race. Preregistration seemed strong in numbers, 87 total, however the weather or vacation time curtailed the number of race day registrations. A total

of 121 enthusiastic runners took to the course in and around White Oak Park. Coming in first overall were John McGovern (16:55.56) and Meghan Moran (21:56.79). The youngest runners were Branchburg’s own, 8 year olds, Brody Beatrice and Penny Meyer, who also participated in the summer Run4Fun program. The full listing of finishers can be found on CompuScore.com. After the 5K awards ceremony, the evening ended with the traditional Summer Camp Counselors vs Branchburg Police, Fire & Rescue personnel softball game. Just prior to the game the Schmalz family was introduced, including their youngest son Grayson, the subject of much fundraising at summer camp.

Counselors presented a check to the family for $7,000, for which they were extremely grateful and overwhelmed at this community’s generosity. The teams took to the field and Grayson threw out the first pitch with the help of Camp Director Holly Scanlon. The game was truly exciting with a back-and-forth lead taken by both teams. The final result was the victorious summer camp counselors winning the game by one run. We are so fortunate to live in a town where so much support is given to and by our officers and residents. Thank you to each of the officers, fire and rescue personnel who came out to enjoy the evening and to everyone who so generously donated to help little Grayson.

Branchburg Senior Citizens Club Begins 49th Season By Rita Jordan The Branchburg Seniors Club is going into its 49th year as a community seniors organization. It’s taken many presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, treasurers, corresponding secretaries and trustees to keep the club running smoothly. We are very fortunate that there have always been some who were willing and able to take on the various offices and the service committees. As we go into our new year, the time is coming to elect new people. We anticipate and sincerely hope that if you are asked to serve you will smile and say, “YES” for you know what comes after 49!

Yes! It will then be our BIG 50th YEAR! On June 5 we went to the Patriot’s Ball Park and enjoyed watching the Patriots play the Blue Crabs from Maryland. We were lucky to be chosen this year after two years of not winning the lottery of the Somerset County Freeholders. We thank the Freeholders for this opportunity. We got rained out of the picnic at the park on June 20, but we managed a wonderful time anyway at our normal meeting place. We got all the picnic food and games as usual. It was different, but nice. This picnic was in addition to the one we usually have in

September. Make sure you are signed up for the September picnic at the first fall meeting. There were no regular business meetings during the summer. All Thursdays were open for Fun Days. Continuing on our president list, Jean Dean was president for a few months in 2012 and then Vice Pres. Marion Chiesa finished the year for her. Marion was a very dynamic and efficient leader. In 2013, Liz Dorizas was elected. Liz had many good ideas which she got into motion. She started the Monday Morning Movies for a Fun Day. She made

the best egg salad sandwiches to sell for our lunches. Liz kept things hopping. She borrowed her daughter’s red convertible to drive in the Memorial Day parades. It was always fun when Liz was around. She was reelected in 2014. Jack Bergen got the presidency in 2015 and then Liz took another year in 2016. She moved to Texas. Jack Bergen was also very involved with the club and the community. Jack is a WWII veteran and always made sure we marched in the parade and arranged for the wreath along with Joe Abate. He also worked the booth at the Branchburg Country Fair each year. Every president adds a special spin to the club. In the next issue we will complete the President list. Only two left. Coming Events: Business Meeting: Sept. 6; Annual September picnic at White Oak Park, Sept. 19, 11:30 am. Membership Information: Membership is open to ages 55 +. Dues are $15 annually.

Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of the month at Building 10, in the Whiton Hills Community Room on Rt. 202 South. It’s on the lower floor. The business meeting is always on the first Thursday. The third Thursday is the social meeting, which includes a light lunch. Time: 11am – 3 pm. “Fun Days” are social times to meet up with friends. These are on Thursdays when there are no meetings. Shooting pool or playing cards are favorite activities. Playing board games and selecting books from the Book Nook, or just socializing are fun, too. You can even get a low-cost light lunch. For more information: 908-6357542. Branchburg Woman’s Club Lists Community Events By Tricia Ihde for the BWC The Branchburg Woman’s Club announces the following upcoming special events: • On Wednesday Sept. 25, the club will host a tasty one-day “Dine for a Cause” fundraiser at the Zinburger Restaurant, 550 Somerset Corporate Blvd. in Bridgewater. When supporters purchase food and present either a printed copy of the BWC Zinburger flyer or show an online flyer via their smart phone, Zinburger will donate 20% of their pre-tax food purchase to the BWC’s Philanthropic Fund. The participation flyer is available at https://staging.dbchk.com/bwc/ BWC_9.25.19.pdf and, as a photo, at https://www.facebook.com/pg/ BburgWClub. Zinburger now offers dinner reservations via the web (zinburger.com) or 908-450-7011. • The BWC’s 32nd Annual Craft Sale will be held from 10 am to 3 pm Saturday, Nov. 16, in Branchburg Central Middle

School. A fundraiser for charities and student awards, there will be door prizes, a bake sale, and refreshments. The roster of crafters who will be selling handmade items is filling up. Some categories, such as traditional jewelry, are filled. Contact the coordinator at BWCcrafts@gmail.com. Vendors of commercially produced items are excluded from the sale. • The next club meeting will be held at 7 pm, Sept. 19, at the Little Red Schoolhouse on South Branch Road. The club will do a project designed to brighten the holiday season for US troops overseas. Members and guests at the meeting will fill holiday stockings with small gifts, travel-sized personal hygiene products, and entertainment items. The finished gift stockings will go to the NJ State Federation of Women’s Clubs to be sent to Operation Yellow Ribbon, a nonprofit organization. • On Saturday, Sept. 28, at

the Branchburg Country Fair in White Oak Park, the club will hold its 21st annual food drive for the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. Contributions of nonperishable food are requested at the club’s table under the big tent until 4 pm. Donation checks should be made payable to Food Bank Network of Somerset County. • Also at the fair, the club will host a 50/50 Raffle to benefit a variety of charities. The raffle will be conducted at a table separate from the BWC Food Drive. Raffle tickets will be sold under the fair tent from 11 am to 3 pm. The ticket winner will be contacted around 4 pm. Participants must be 18 years or older. The BWC welcomes new members. It is easy to join after you attend a few meetings. Annual dues are $35. Call 908-866-1060 and follow the club on Facebook.

The Capitol Steps: The Lyin’ Kings Saturday, October 26 at 8PM Tickets: $40 & $50

Friday, November 15 at 7PM Tickets: $30 & $40

Seven tells the true stories of seven remarkable female activists who bravely fought for the well-being of women, families and children around the globe. A collaboration between the activists and seven acclaimed female playwrights, this riveting radio-style theatre production weaves a tapestry of inspiring tales of bravery and perseverance.

For over 35 years The Capitol Steps have been putting politics and scandal to music. They began when Reagan was president and ketchup was a vegetable. This season The Capitol Steps plan to bring down the house… and Senate, with their unique blend of music and political comedy. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy?!

This powerful female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe has drawn international acclaim for its inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to afro jazz to gospel. Nobuntu’s vocals, energy and breathtaking performance on stage is an experience that inspires and touches people of all cultures and walks of life.
