Classes of 2020 Experience A Most Unusual Graduation Season Somerville High School 2020 commencement was originally scheduled to take place on Friday, June 19, at Brooks Field in Somerville. As in many other districts in New Jersey and across the country, graduation ceremonies at Somerville this year were reconfigured to follow medical and government guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic. At first a virtual ceremony was planned, but after a survey administrators switched gears. Principal Gerard T. Foley on June 16 issued the following letter regarding an in-person graduation ceremony: Class of 2020, First of all, thank you to all who completed the Class of 2020 In-Person Graduation survey. As a result of your feedback, we will be conducting one ceremony with

only our graduates in attendance. The ceremony will be live streamed for family members and friends. The in-person ceremony will take place on July 6 at 9 am on Brooks Field. Additionally, in collaboration with our yearbook and student council advisors and the PTO, we are in the process of planning other activities following the ceremony. We are hoping to distribute yearbooks, however, we are still uncertain if the books will arrive in time for July 6. I will keep you posted. Finally, now that we are having an in-person graduation ceremony, we want all of you and your families to hear our SHS choir and student speeches for Pictured is the Somerville High School Class of 2020 taken last fall before anyone ever heard the word coronavirus. the first time live on July 6. Branchburg Country Fair is Sept. 26

By Rita Bouwman On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, the Branchburg Country Fair will celebrate its 23rd annual event at White Oak Park with a rain date of Sunday, Sept. 27. In 23 years, the Branchburg Country Fair has encountered Hurricane Floyd, the tragic events of 9/11 and Superstorm Sandy. However, we never expected a panademic. Therefore, the Branchburg Country Fair will be modified for the safety of all fair-goers. We are planning to have a concert from 6 to 8 pm. The Gregory Gonzales Memorial Fireworks will follow at 8 pm. Of course, we will be following social distancing and any other rules established at the time. For more information, you may email Branchburgcountryfair@gmail.com or call Bob or Rita Bouwman at (908) 526-3094. The event as always will be free and give Branchburg and neighboring residents a chance to celebrate Branchburg in a safe manner. We hope to see you at the Fair, neighbor!

While non-aerial fireworks AKA sparkling novelties are legal in New Jersey, it is important to remember that sparkling novelties are inherently dangerous because they burn at such an extreme temperature. Branchburg Township Fire Safety recommends that you leave fireworks to the professionals, but if you don't please remember that:

 Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.  Sparkling novelties can be an invitation to personal injury and should not be treated as toys for children. In fact, sparkling novelties can burn at or above 2000°F, which can cause serious injuries to anyone handling.

 Only buy sparkling novelties from reputable businesses.  Don’t buy if packaging is damaged or appears tampered with.  Don’t try and “fix” broken or “dud” fireworks.  Never use indoors.  Don’t use in very windy or dry conditions.  Never aim a firework at yourself, another person, animals, or buildings.  Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire and to douse used fireworks before discarding in trash.

 Never relight a “dud” firework, leave it alone and only approach after 20 minutes.

The Rivers Were Here First

Imagine glistening water appearing on the south face of a retreating glacier at the end of the last ice age. The warming atmosphere sent a cascade of water onto the bare earth where it pooled to create an echo chamber, sounding the arrival of each drop of icy water. This scenario describes the theoretical birth of the Raritan River watershed. The rivers were here first, post glacial retreat. Consider the main branch of the Raritan River, the South Branch, was formed at the start of a brief ten-thousand-year moment of post glacial, relative geologic stability. The weight of megatons of glacial ice removed, the now unburdened earth began to squirm. Seeking to ease tension and reach a state of equilibrium, mountains, valleys and ridges were formed and reformed as tectonic plates shifted. Low areas filled with glacial melt and rainfall till overflowing. Large lakes formed as water accumulated, the weight of water then destabilized the ground to breech these impoundments. The sudden release of water further altered the topography of the land. Over time equilibrium was reached where water accumulation and flow were balanced. Gravity then directed the relatively constant overflow downhill, seeking a path of least resistance dependant on soil structure and around hard rock to reach sea level. The current source of the Raritan, which arises at Budd Lake, is approximately 933 feet above sea level. Looking at the stability of today’s river we must appreciate the almost evolutionary natural selection of its watercourse. Locally we see deep valleys far outsized in comparison to the small streams flowing through them; Holland Brook and

Pleasant Run are two examples. Somewhere in the past these pastoral rills were raging rivers, perhaps overflow from the volcanic vent that formed Round Valley. The outlet of the Hudson River was determined at one point to be in the area of Bound Brook and formed what is now the lower Raritan River. The South Branch of the Raritan eventually meandered through rock and rill to merge with the Raritan River, orphaned by the mercurial Hudson in its adolescent stage. The first rivers and streams were simply situated where the combination of elevation/gravity, rate of flow, soil structure and rocky obstructions were random. Flora and fauna had no stable conditions upon which to flourish. Once the river course stabilized, it provided ideal conditions for an interdependent community of plants, animals and eventually humans. Undeniably the river is referenced in every aspect of planning and development. Suffering good and bad decisions, its endless flow serves as innate immunity, susceptible to remediation and full recovery. Human habitation along the river has to be considered dramatic as human intervention has the greatest impact upon the environment in any given era. Whether it be the first colonial dams which were burned because they blocked the upstream alewive migration or twentieth century chemical effluent from industry which poisoned our waters and the cascade of life from which it arose. The river is an immovable constant which provides stability when change rages in an ebb and flow of perceived progress. This watery touchstone provides a north star upon which to re-direct an awareness of community and balance. Look closer at the flowing water and realize what appears as an enduring entity is made up of endless stream of new water molecules. A river looks static in that its bed is

always filled with water. I just find it fascinating to realize I am looking at the closest thing to infinity, as unique water molecules have passed by the same point for eons. The individuals come together to create a seamless enduring entity. It is mindboggling to consider that view, but helpful to see life as a continuous flow of new recruits and how decisions made today will impact the future. It also provides a new perspective from which to view an issue. Too often problem solving suffers from restricted contributions. Our rivers provide tangible benefits as well as being a source of inspiration to expand our imagination and fire our creativity for the benefit of all. The rivers were here first and life grew up around them in an expanding spiral of interrelated communities. Contact jjmish57@msn.com. See more articles and photos at winterbearrising.wordpress.com.

The source of the main branch of the Raritan River arises from Budd Lake, a large glacial lake aka Hattacawanna in Morris County. The photo above was taken from the Budd Lake outlet that forms the South Branch. The photo on the lower right shows the beginning of the South Branch of the Raritan as it leaves Budd Lake. From here the water flows from an elevation of 933 feet to sea level over a 50-mile course, which includes the confluence of the North and South branches of the Raritan at Branchburg, aka Tucca-Ramma-Hacking. The photo on the lower left shows the confluence, including the Old York Road bridge crossing between Branchburg on the right and Bridgewater on the left. Aerial photo is complements of a flight provided by LightHawk and No Water No Life.

Talent Show Tradition Stayed Alive as History Was Made

On June 15, history was made at Stony Brook School as the annual talent show went virtual. During the past 22 years, Mrs. Burke’s Schoolwide Enrichment Program has celebrated the wonderful talents of the students, and quarantine was not going to make number 23 any different. Thirty-one students took up the challenge and in some cases the furniture and carpets, to record their acts from home and send them to Mrs. Burke to be included in the virtual show. Through the online platform “YouTube Premieres,” the show debuted at 7 pm and the whole Stony Brook family watched at the same time from the comfort of their own homes. The show was a great success and showed that Stony Brook School is a creative and resilient community. Guitarists, seen above in a collage, are Sam Napolitano, Myles Weber and Nate Pennington. Nate, at the lower right, created a oneman trio via a triple-exposure video. –submitted by Tonilynn Burke, Stony Brook School Gifted and Talented Program Teacher

Branchburg Woman’s Club Bestows Student Awards

By Tricia Ihde for the BWC Every spring the Branchburg Woman’s Club determines its annual student awards and charitable donations. The latter were announced in May. Prior to those contributions, the club also gave funds to Somerville High School’s Project Graduation. In June, the club honored students who were selected by their schools for academic achievement, citizenship, and community service. Somerville High School students Madison Bayles and Thomas Ulmer each were awarded $1,000 scholarships by the club. Monetary awards were given to some eighth-grade graduates from Branchburg Central

Middle School (BCMS) for their achievements: Patricia Leoniuk, High Academic Average of the BCMS Force Team; Mina Batra, Vocal Music and High Academic Average of the BCMS Innovators Team (two awards); and Joe Galioto, Instrumental Music. BWC Co-President Linda Mish wrote, “On behalf of the Branchburg Woman’s Club, CoPresident Kathy Herdman and I would like to extend congratulations to the Somerville High School and Branchburg Central Middle School award recipients. Best of luck to all.” The “2020 BCMS Awards Night” video has additional information and has been posted on the “Branchburg

Introducing Stoney Brook Grille at Fox Hollow The restaurant at Fox Hollow Golf Club has come out of the coronavirus shutdown with Branchburg mainstay Simos Kontos at the helm. Golf Club Managing Partner Matt Galvin tapped the restaurateur’s talents based on the success of Stoney Brook Grille, 1285 Route 28 in North Branch, which Kontos will continue to operate along with the new venture. “We closed down completely in mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic, and when it was finally time to reopen it made sense to have Simos come in and

take over kitchen operations instead of reinventing the wheel,” Galvin said. “We heard great things about Simos and his crew, so it made sense.” Stoney Brook Grille at Fox Hollow will have “a different flair, different menu items” than the restaurant on Route 28, Kontos said. The restaurant is open to the public, both golfers and nongolfers. Special seasonal events will be planned, and Kontos will be involved in menu planning for corporate events, banquets, weddings and outings at Fox Hollow.

What will Dr. Krulewicz be getting for his 40 years of service? A little plaque. When Dr. K first came to Branchburg, he put up a sign saying he was a “painless dentist. But a kid from Vollers Drive quickly disputed this. “He’s a fake, he told his sister. “When he stuck his hand in my mouth, I bit him -- and he yelled just like anyone else! And one for the beach-goers -- how can you spot Ronald McDonald at the beach? Over the May 2-3 weekend, Troop 90 participated in the Boy Scouts National Camp-In. With families isolating at home, kids across America were invited to participate on Facebook, with tutorials on campsite contruction and wilderness survival tips. As written in the Scout Law, a scout is cheerful. Whether in the backyard or living room, members of Troop 90 joined other troops and families across the country live on Facebook for a day of fun virtual adventures. From camp-style cooking and friendly competitions, to special guests and campfire singalongs, this virtual event brought the best parts of Scouting to life. We are looking forward to when we can all be back together, in person. -- submitted by Larry Ahearn
