NBRC Preschool Teacher Celebrates 20th Year

Mrs. Gerianne McGowan

By Jennifer Landrieu, Director The North Branch Reformed Church Preschool has offered a quality early childhood education program to our local com-

munity for over 65 years and has been repeatedly awarded as the BEST PRESCHOOL in Bridgewater. Recently, the school earned a place in the Business Hall of Fame! The Preschool owes much of its success to the warm and loving staff who dedicate themselves to enriching the lives of their students. Mrs. Gerianne McGowan, a Branchburg resident, celebrates her 20th anniversary as a teacher at the Preschool this year. She’s always thought the Preschool was the perfect place to work and has enjoyed knowing that all of her coworkers love teaching there, too.

Mrs. McGowan joined the staff in 2002 and thought it was a good fit for her young family, as she had the flexibility to be home with her own children after Preschool. Known for her sunny disposition, happy smile, and love of science, Mrs. McGowan engages her students in STEM projects in her 5-Day 5’s class and Science Explorers enrichment class. Whether hatching butterflies and chicks or building bridges and growing crystals, her classroom is always a fun place to learn. She loves seeing the surprised look on her students’ faces when doing an experiment or when they successfully complete a challenging building project. A lover of the literary arts, Mrs. McGowan has invited children’s authors for in-person and virtual visits and loves reading stories aloud to her students. Mrs. McGowan believes children learn best when taught through play and you can find this in all aspects of the Preschool’s program. She allows her students to explore and has patience with them in all their stages of learning. God certainly blessed NBRC Preschool when He sent us Mrs. McGowan and we hope you’ll extend your congratulations to her when you see her around Branchburg!

Race to the Sea

Imagine a colorful fleet of canoes and kayaks gathered at the confluence of the north and south branch in anticipation of the start of a dash down the Raritan River to the sea. Described as a sojourn, dash, race, and tour to accommodate all levels of experience, the finish lines for each class can be a different take out along the way. Maybe hold classes for racers, timing for placement, and then a simple celebration upon reaching any chosen finish line for the touring dashers. Distance or time become the personal feedback for participants who may wish to improve their last year’s performance. In that way the ‘race’ has the elements of developing into a tradition where dads and daughters, moms and sons, look forward to next year and maybe in anticipation, focus on improving their health and physical conditioning. The paddler’s intimacy with the

Raritan brings with it a deeper appreciation of the river, which has existed as more of a concept to most people who may only glimpse it at a distance, while passing over a bridge on the way to work. With intimacy comes consideration and concern about all things impacting the river and its watershed. The possibilities to grow a network of support for the treasure that is the Raritan River, are limited only by imagination. Photographs and art work inspired by the river’s appearance through the seasons could be celebrated by riverside towns, restaurants, schools, and galleries to be dispersed far and wide. Like seeds in the wind, the beauty and appreciation of the Raritan may be an inspiration to awaken distant communities to the riverine treasures in their backyard. One example of a successful effort to market a once polluted river, is the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race, held each April, in Maine. At one time salmon and eels returned from the sea via the Penobscot River to the Kenduskeag Stream. By the time Thoreau walked the shores of the Kenduskeag in the mid nineteenth century, tanneries and flour

mills blocked and poisoned the stream, this continued well into the 1960s. A group of local canoeists came up with the idea for a canoe race to showcase the Kenduskeag and bring attention to its health. Eventually the race expanded to be televised and enjoyed by hundreds of viewers and attendees. The salmon run is making a comeback and even Sports Illustrated found room on its cover to celebrate the longest early season canoe race in New England. I participated in this race for 18 years and carried the seeds of inspiration back to the Raritan. It is no small coincidence that Henry David Thoreau left indelible footprints along the Raritan River and the Kenduskeag for future generations to follow. Contact jjmish57@msn.com. See The crowd of streamside supporters cheer on canoeists who await the countdown more articles and photos at winter- for the start of the Kenduskeag Stream Race. This is a scenario that may someday be played out at the confluence of the Raritan River in Branchburg. bearrising.wordpress.com.

The egg hunt will feature over 2,000 eggs and 10 grand prizes for finding “golden eggs” throughout the park. The Easter Bunny will be available for photos and face painting will be featured. SHS Robotics Team 102 Off to a Good Start

Somerville High School’s Robotics Team 102 (The Gearheads) recently received the District Chairman’s Award in competition.

By Nick Giampino, Patricia Leoniuk, Mahek Madan Somerville High School’s Robotics Team 102, called the Gearheads, is competing in the annual FIRST robotics competition against other schools in New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Delaware. For the first time since 2019, the competitions are being held in person.

Team 102 has 23 students and 16 mentors, many of whom are SHS alumni. Three main subteams are: mechanical, electrical, and programming. This student-led team has three team executives and each subteam has its own lead. The leadership team helps organize and give out tasks during the season to ensure that everyone contributes to

building the robot. On the first weekend of the new year, FIRST reveals what the competition challenge will be. Over the next two months, teams design, build, wire, program, test, drive and troubleshoot a robot to complete the challenge and compete against other high school teams. This year, Team 102 will compete at the Mount Olive and Montgomery competitions. The challenge involves picking up and throwing an oversized tennis ball into targets that are 4’8” or 8’8” above the ground and lifting the 120-pound robot onto a bar 5’6” above the ground and then, while suspended, transfer to other bars

that are even higher. The robots compete in alliances consisting of three robots and the alliance with the most points wins the match. Outside of the competition season, the team holds multiple outreach events to be more involved in the community. For example, in 2021, the team brought robots from previous years to Whiton Elementary School for a presentation to more than 350 students. In addition, mentors and advisors present classes dubbed 102 University, or 102U, about various aspects for each subteam. These classes are available to anyone interested in learning about engineering.

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a robotics community that prepares young people for the future by offering various inclusive, team-based robotics programs for ages 4 to 18. FIRST’s mission is to inspire young people to become leaders and innovators in science and technology by involving them in exciting mentor-based programs that develop science, engineering, and technology (STEM) skills, encourage innovation, and foster well-rounded life skills such as selfconfidence, communication, and leadership.

This Month In Branchburg History One Year Ago, April 2021 – Somerset County Sheriff Darrin Russo visited with the U8 Branchburg Bulldogs travel team as part of Baseball Opening Day festivities at White Oak Park on April 18. Five Years Ago, April 2017 – Readington Road was closed for repairs and it provided an ideal opportunity for 17 eighth graders from Branchburg Central Middle School, who expressed an interest, to meet on the site with Brian W. Mauer, P.E., principal bridge engineer of Somerset County. The students were able to inspect the bridge near their school that had been stripped down to its structural steel and concrete, as a real-life engineering lesson.

25 Years Ago, April 1997 – The Branchburg League of Women Voters published a 27-page booklet called “This is Branchburg,” in an effort to enlighten citizens on matters of community affairs. League members Nancy Maulding and Barbara Hase, residents of the Fox Hollow area, presented copies of the booklet to the Township Committee. Mayor Jacob D. Quick called it an “invaluable tool.” Since its inception in 1996, the league has promoted other civic-minded projects such as “candidates’ night.”

50 Years Ago, April 1972 — Forest fire emergencies in 1971 had closed woodlands in New Jersey to recreation, but now trout stocking was resuming just in time for fishing season – great news for a river town like Branchburg. 10 Years Ago, April 2012 – On April Gov. Cahill said the ban on open burn13, the Somerville High School Win- ing remained in effect, but stocking ter Guard was crowned Scholastic and fishing would resume in Round A World Champions at the Winter Valley, Spruce Run, Amwell Lake and Guard International (WGI) 2012 the Delaware-Raritan Canal feeder.
