Shoe Drive Underway Somerville High School Winter Guard is running a shoe drive through Feb. 25. The guard will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated footwear. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes in “Shoe Us the Love” bins in the foyer of Somerville High School and the Branchburg Municipal Building. Drop shoes off during building operating hours only. Do not leave any shoes outside the buildings. All donated shoes will then

be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school. Thank you to all who have already donated. —Submitted by Somerville High School Winter Guard

Branchburg Woman’s Club Brightens Winter Days By Kate Sarles One of the many opportunities membership in the Branchburg Woman’s Club offers is participation in the NJ State Federation of Women’s Clubs projects. One such initiative is “Advocates for Children,” which supports children. Members simply save soda tabs (or any aluminum tab.) Last year our club collected 18 pounds of tabs. A collection bin is located at the Municipal Building. The money derived from the tabs helps defray the living expenses of children and their families staying at Ronald McDonald House while

the children are receiving medical treatment. Keep those tabs coming! Unless you love snow, February can be a long month with reduced daylight and activities, especially with Covid-19 still a concern. The club offers members a Sunshine Greeting. Throughout the year chairwoman Kate Sarles (yours truly) sends cards to memorialize special life events, such as weddings, births, and graduations. Also, handwritten messages extending the club’s best wishes and support are sent to those experiencing health issues or losses.

Sometimes just a simple card can help lift spirits. This month members will enjoy a White Elephant Sale at their general meeting. Gently used or new items are brought to the meeting to be auctioned off to other members. Remember one woman’s trash is another’s treasure! Come and share in the fun. Everyone leaves happy. The February meeting will be held in the Whiton Hills Community Center on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. For more information email Branchburgwomansclub@gmail. com or call 908-458-6832.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Mrs. Anna Columbus was sworn into office as a duly elected Township Committee member for a three year term to expire on December 31, 2024. Mr. Brendon Beatrice was sworn into office as a duly elected Township Committee member, shortly thereafter, for a three year term to expire on December 31, 2024 Mr. James Schworn was nominated and unanimously selected as Mayor for a one year term to expire on December 31, 2022. Mr. David Owens was nominated and unanimously selected to serve as Deputy Mayor for the upcoming year. 2022 Acceptance Speech by Mayor James Schworn Let me say how much I appreciate the opportunity to serve on this committee and serve as your Mayor. It is a privilege to represent you. I am as deeply humbled and honored to serve Branchburg today as when I was first sworn into office many years ago. Thank you to my fellow Township Committee members for your continued confidence in my ability. I must offer a special acknowledgment and thanks to my daughters: Emily, Catlin, Sarah and Jenna for their continued patience and support. I love you all. I would like to acknowledge and thank outgoing Mayor Brendon Beatrice for his hard work during the past year. It was not an easy year to govern, and Brendon’s leadership was instrumental in maintaining stability and focus as we faced unprecedented challenges. I look forward to working with Dave as my Deputy Mayor and my other esteemed colleagues. Together, we enter 2022 with a renewed sense of purpose, strength, and conviction. There is a lot of work to be done. I would also like to acknowledge the men and women appointed to serve on our Boards and Commissions. We thank you for your efforts and dedication to our community. You are the unsung heroes of Branchburg and you are vital to our town’s ongoing success. I have said this before and it bears repeating: I believe I speak for all our elected officials, administrators and board and commission members. We do not govern Branchburg through the often distorted lens of political ideology. In fact, we consider ourselves to be administrators rather than a body politic. We administer the township as if it was a corporation and we serve as its Board of Directors. We consider Gregory Bonin our CEO and his team our executive management. Our corporate value proposition or mission statement is simple: Protect and maintain the quality of lives for all our residents. As such, we do not consider politics in our decisions. The sole criterion of any decision is the impact that it will have on the long term quality of our family’s lives. Do not forget that we too live and raise our families in Branchburg. We share a vested interest in Branchburg’s success. To that end, we encourage each and every resident to reach out to us with any questions, concerns or issues regarding the township. We welcome and need your input to govern effectively. Two quick points: First: Many towns suffered severe financial losses due to the impact of Covid which will only be offset through additional taxes and levies. Although not fancy, our prudent and conservative fiscal policies, led by our CFO Diane Schubach, have protected our residents from a similar fate. We will emerge from the pandemic fiscally solvent. Our willingness to work with and support our commercial partners continues to make us stronger due to proposed expansion of multiple business operations. We will maintain our triple AAA bond rating and continue to maintain our 2% budget cap and our surplus emergency funds. We have not fully returned to pre-pandemic conditions but there will be no tax increases as a result of Covid driven revenue short falls.

Second: We understand and share the concern of many residents as we are beginning to see the housing construction forced upon us by the courts. We were able to fight these developments for close to 20 years but greed and avarice eventually prevailed. Yet it should be noted that we were still able to successfully settle and limit the total buildout of homes to under 20% of the court required number of over 5,000. It must be understood that we will continue to vigorously oppose any commercial or residential development projects that ultimately will harm our community. In closing, I would like to once again thank the countless men and women who volunteer their time and effort, our emergency services, our fire companies, our police force, our administrators and all our employees who work tirelessly to keep Branchburg a safe and prosperous community. Your service is not overlooked. Thank you and I look forward to serving as your Mayor in 2022.

One recent project Matt asked of his students was to have them research disabilities and create a learning environment that would best meet the needs of those who would be partaking. Matt works to make inclusion a must for all students while understanding individual needs. He also supports the staff with technology assistance when anyone has an issue. Matt created a meditation and coding club to allow students to learn mindful strategies while encouraging their love of technology,

and was a recent “secret guest” at a school fundraiser for childhood cancer that raised over 10,000! Matt also serves as a “Parent Pick-Up Coordinator” and happily passes along good news to parents as they retrieve their kids after the school day. For all of these reasons, and many more, Matt Zimmerman is a “Teacher Who Makes Magic!”

The Raritan Valley Community College Institute of Holocaust and Genocide Studies will present two virtual programs in February, including a book talk on Feb. 9 and a theater performance on Feb. 11. Dr. Elizabeth R. Baer, author of The Genocidal Gaze: From German Southwest Africa to the Third Reich, will speak about her book during a virtual presentation, Feb. 9, from 7 to 8 p.m. Her book examines the threads of shared ideology in the Herero and Nama genocide and the Holocaust. The event, moderated by Dr. Jeff Benvenuto of Gratz College, is being co-sponsored by The Mercer Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights Education Center at Mercer County Community College. To register, visit https://bit.ly/3tmS9C9.

A “live” virtual theater performance, Letters From Anne and Martin, will be presented Feb. 11, from 10 to 11 a.m. The unique production combines the iconic voices of Anne Frank and Martin Luther King, Jr. While both were born in 1929, they seemingly represented drastically different times and cultures. Developed from excerpts from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” the piece evokes the important messages from these legendary figures, who write of their hopes and plans for a peaceful and unified world. The virtual program is being held in partnership with The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect. To register, visit https://bit.ly/3K3Z0pG.

PTO Holiday Happiness Thanks Branchburg Residents for Generosity The 2021 Branchburg PTO Holiday Happiness program proved to be successful despite continued coronavirus pandemic challenges. The PTO collected numerous toys, a variety of clothing, monetary gifts and gift cards. As always, Branchburg residents donated generously and volunteers worked tirelessly. This year 21 families with children benefitted, and gifts and gift cards were divided among 37 children. The PTO thanks Tamiko Hub-

bard of Sweet Reads for 100 books to divide among the children; Perfect Touch of Summit for a monetary gift; Branchburg Cookie Ladies for supplying sweet treats and gift cards; Branchburg Rotary for filled stockings, goodie bags, hats and gloves and non-perishable foods; Branchburg Women’s Club for supplying packaged cookies for each family; the outstanding Branchburg Township School District staff; and Branchburg residents for the new gift donations and extremely generous gift cards.

This program is only successful year after year due to the wonderful volunteers. A special thank you to Heidi Davis, chair, and her family for opening up their home for the past eight years to store and sort donations. —submitted by Branchburg PTO

Pajama Palooza–Stony Brook School held a Pajama Drive in December, collecting 209 pairs of brand-new pajamas for local children in need. The drive was coordinated by fourth grade teacher Nina Manger, left, and fifth grade teacher Stephanie Formus, right. Students and their families and Stony Brook staff members competed to see if the fourth graders or fifth graders would bring in more PJs. The fourth graders won the friendly competition. For every pair of pajamas donated to Catholic Charities, Scholastic Book Clubs donated a brand-new book. “Pajama Program” is a nonprofit that promotes a comforting bedtime routine and healthy sleep for children to help them thrive. (pajamaprogram.org) Stony Brook has been participating in the drive for the past five years.

By Tulsi R. Maharjan, Ph.D., Branchburg Rotary The Rotary Club of Branchburg Foundation (www.Branchburgrotarynj.org) supported homeless individuals and families, youth, seniors and homeless veterans in need throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Rotary Club of Branchburg in partnership with Somerville High School Interact Club and Scout Troop 185 held the annual Holiday Happiness Fund Drive in December to help the needy in Somerset County. Branchburg Rotary provided $100,000 during Rotary’s 20th

Anniversary of the Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner and Diversity & Peace Award ceremony. “This is the largest allocation of funds we’ve had to distribute in many years,” said Joe Horner, Coordinator. “Our goal is to support the community, especially now, during the Covid pandemic. These organizations need financial support to keep their much-needed programs for veterans active as well as community projects.” Branchburg Rotary also started a new Food Pantry at the Bound Brook Presbyterian

Church during the pandemic. So far, more than $50,000 worth of fresh food and cooked food has been shared with the community.
