Spread Your Wings & Fly

Stony Brook Art Teacher Mrs. Samantha Rueger recently painted a mural on a highly visible wall at the school and created a timelapse video of the project for students and staff to enjoy. “I was encouraged by Principal Kristen Kries to paint a mural,” Mrs. Rueger said. “For the concept, I chose to include the school’s staff in the decision. I sent out a form that collected their ideas and votes for what type of mural they would like to see every day (interactive, inspiration quotes and/or subject imagery).” Mrs. Rueger found that everyone seemed to like all of the concepts, so she put them all together and chose the butterfly to represent growth and transformation. Along the top of the butterfly she wrote “Spread your wings & fly” to represent the students’ jour-

Following is a letter to the residents of Branchurg Township from retiring NJ State Senator Kip Bateman:

To the Branchburg residents, On January 10th I will serve my last day in the New Jersey Senate. After 38 years as a public official representing Branchburg Township, I wanted to take the time to thank the voters for giving me the honor to serve. I have lived in Branchburg my entire 64 years, and to be able to serve as mayor of my town was special. ney. For the inside of the butterfly wings, she drew imagery that represents SBS and its subject areas. And best of all, the students can interact with the butterfly wings by standing in the middle and pretending the wings are theirs.

Over the years, I had the pleasure of performing many marriages and speaking at dozens of Eagle Scout Courts of Honor and Gold Star ceremonies. I have met and worked with hundreds of individuals in efforts to make Branchburg a better place to live and raise a family. I will miss many aspects of being an elected official, but it was an experience I will never forget. My heartfelt thanks for giving me the opportunity to serve. ~ Kip Bateman

Branchburg Recreation to Manage Senior Citizen Club By Audrey E. Henry Branchburg Recreation For 50 years the Branchburg Senior Citizens have enjoyed their club here in the township with weekly meetings at the Whiton Hills Community Room, picnics at White Oak Park, various events, and bus trips. Dedicated residents and non-residents have taken the helm through the years and managed beautifully through it all, especially with the challenges of Covid-19! As time marched on, interest began waning and conversations took place over the past year. The solution became clear, and the Branchburg Seniors will now fall under the direction of the Recreation Department. We are actively working with the Seniors Executive Committee and slowly transitioning over to planning programs and events for 2022. The seniors will still maintain officers who will act as a steering committee. Our hope is to spark the interest of Branchburg seniors who were former members as well as those who never knew the club existed. To become a “Senior Program Participant” you must be 55 or over. Registration will occur each January, beginning this Jan. 1, 2022,

and occur online through Community Pass. (We offer a paper registration form as well, available at the senior meetings or through the Recreation Office.) This registration will entitle you to discounts on already existing recreation programs as well as an opportunity to enjoy any trips or events that are planned for the seniors. Annual dues for residents are $15, while non-residents pay an additional $10 or a total of $25. To register online through Community Pass, create an account if you do not already have one. (https://register.communitypass.

net/Branchburg) If you forgot your password call us, and we will help. (If you were a member at the Silver Saddle pool over the summer, you are in Community Pass.) Register under “Annual Senior Citizen Programs 2022.” You must then register for the “Senior Program Participant,” which acts as your dues, $15 or $25. This will serve as your membership for the year and afford you the opportunity to receive discounts on recreation programs listed in that season. If you have questions or suggestions or need assistance, please call us at 908-526-1300 ext. 188.

Somerville High School Winter Guard launched a shoe drive on Dec. 15 that will run through February. The guard will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated footwear. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes in temporary boxes in the foyer of Somerville High School and the Branchburg Municipal Building. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing

nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school. Most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate which can help those less fortunate become self-sufficient. —Submitted by Somerville High School Winter Guard

SCVTHS Students Support Cancer Research

As part of a yearly fundraiser, students in the Health Occupations/ HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) club at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School collected donations for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Students and staff participated by giving $1 donations and filling out Celebration of Life Birthday Cards, which were added to the Celebration of Life Wall, outside the school’s guidance office. At the end of the fundraiser, the Health Occupations/HOSA students had their most successful event by gathering nearly $600. As part of another fundraiser, students in the National Honor Society for Dance Arts collected 18 large bags of gently used items in support of the United Breast Cancer Foundation. All items will be used to assist women, men and children

affected by breast cancer. SCVTHS Dance Instructor and Chapter Sponsor for the National Honor Society for Dance Arts Maureen Glennon-Clayton spoke of the drive stating, “I am very proud of our senior student, Colin Sheeley, who spearheaded the donation drive. He approached me with his idea, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the drive was very successful with approximately 18 bags of donated items. A special thank you to our students, parents, and the community for their generous donations to help support all those affected by breast cancer.” Finally, students in the Cosmetology program held a Hair Extension Fundraiser, which yielded $400 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Hair extensions were available for students and staff during lunch periods throughout the month of October.

Branchburg Soccer Club Celebrates Inaugural Season

FC Neshanic, a Branchburg premier youth soccer program, celebrated its inaugural season with the U13 and U12 teams Dec. 5 at Branchburg Sports Complex. The boys were excited to celebrate their season, and friendships, over some laser tag, pizza and cupcakes. Antonio Pires, President, the drive behind the vision for the club, said “Our goal at FCN is to have player development be at the forefront of our program. We

also believe that development includes more than soccer development, it also includes character and leadership development. Our program is based off a true community model that is essential to the growth of our players.” Director of Coaching, Dimitri Serrano, said, “This year our focus was to build on our playing style and have the player understand what it takes to dominate games. The response from our players was amazing, and

Troop 185 Flag Retirement Ceremony

On the evening of Nov. 10, scouts and adults from Troop 185, as well as Cub Scouts from Packs 94, 185 and 315, conducted a flag retirement ceremony at White Oak Park in honor of our veterans. Scouts described what each part of the flag represented, as the stars and stripes of one flag were cut apart and placed onto a fire. Scouts, veterans and other attendees, who wanted to retire a worn flag had the opportunity to place one onto the fire. Thank you to all veterans for their service. –Submitted by Eileen Bufe

BRANCHBURG COMMONS

By Kate Sarles Women join the Branchburg Woman’s Club for a variety of reasons. Some want to pursue a special interest that the club offers, others are drawn to the community fundraising projects, others just want to develop friendships and have fun. Last month the club met for that last reason, when it celebrated the holidays with the annual December social. As is done in each of its monthly meetings, a committee of members supplied delicious refreshments and then all enjoyed an evening of social networking. Also at the December meeting, the women brought cookies for the PTO’s Holiday Happiness drive. This year, as was the case last year, the cookies had to be store bought; but the ladies look forward to the tradition of baking delicious holiday cookies for Holiday Happiness next year, after Covid times. Operation Blue Guardian will be presented at the Jan. 22

meeting by the Branchburg Police Department at Whiton Hills Community Room at 7 p.m. This initiative allows the police in an emergency to access the home of a resident 55 years or older who may not be able to give the police entry to their home. We look forward to this important information that we or our family and friends may need in the future. As a 60-year member of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs (NJSFWC), Branchburg women participate in the state’s awards program competing in areas such as Communications, Civic Engagement and Outreach, Education and Libraries, and Fundraising. This is the time of year when all the applications are compiled. Awards are presented in the spring, and Branchburg usually places well. We will report on the awards in the spring. Lisa Gallizzo with her Bernese

Branchburg resident Lisa Gallizzo is among the judges at the 146th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Presented by Purina Pro Plan in New York, NY, Jan. 24-26. The iconic dog show is set to return to New York City after the 2021 event was held outdoors at the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, NY, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Gallizzo is one of two judges for the Junior Showmanship Preliminaries. This is her first judging assignment at Westminster. Gallizzo became involved in the sport of dogs at 12-years-old, exhibiting her family’s Golden Retrievers in Conformation and

Junior Showmanship. Gallizzo also acquired a Pointer to show and qualified to compete in Junior Showmanship at Westminster in 1995 and 1996. Gallizzo fell in love with the Bernese Mountain Dog while handling for a local breeder and co-bred her first litter in 1998. She continues breeding top-winning Bernese under the Greenway prefix. She is the proud breeder and co-owner of the 2021 Westminster Best of Breed winner. Over the years, Gallizzo has been at the end of the lead of top winning Bernese Mountain Dogs and Golden Retrievers, among

other breeds. In 2007, she became a member of the AKC Registered Handler’s program and is an active member today. Gallizzo is approved to judge Junior Showmanship. Junior Showmanship is a competition assessing the handling skills of children 9-18 years of age independent of the traits of the dog. Since 1934 The Westminster Kennel Club has offered Junior Showmanship competition (formerly known as Children’s Handling class). Today Junior Showmanship at Westminster has a preliminary judging round where nearly 100 Juniors from across the country

are judged with eight finalists advancing to the Finals competition. The first-place winner is crowned Best Junior Handler followed by a 2nd, 3rd and 4th placements. The Westminster Kennel Club offers Junior Showmanship Finalist Scholarship Awards to the eight finalists at the show: First place $10,000, Second place $5,000, Third place $4,000, and Fourth place $3,000. SHS Hosts Winter Guard Show Jan. 22 at Branchburg Central Middle School

Pictured are members of the Somerville High School Scholastic World Winter Guard.

By Patti Verbanas On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Somerville High School Music Boosters Association will host its 16th annual Indoor Color Guard show at Branchburg Central Middle School. Competing winter guard teams from around the region will attend, with a concluding performance of the debut of the 2022 show by the two-time world champion Somerville High School Scholastic World Winter Guard. Winter guard — known as “the sport of the arts” — is a competitive

indoor color guard activity in which performers use flags, rifles, sabers and other equipment combined with dance to produce a choreographed show. Teams are judged in various categories, including movement, technique, design analysis, equipment and general effect. The Somerville Winter Guard is the 2012 Scholastic A and 2015 Scholastic Open Class Winter Guard International (WGI) World Champion, a competition that takes place annually at the University of Dayton in Ohio. The award-winning

performance attracted the attention of musician David Byrne, who selected the team to be one of ten to collaborate with indie musicians to create a live music and winter guard show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Toronto’s Air Canada Center, which was featured in the 2017 documentary Contemporary Color. The Somerville Winter Guard also participated in the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) documentary Marching to the CoolREGISTRATION FOR SEPT.2022 STARTS IN FEB.

Pictured are the Somerville High School Marching Band and Color Guard. By Sharon Kechula, Somerville High School Music Booster Association And this one time at Band Camp… an iconic phrase invoking for some, more than a smirk but a reminiscence of time filled with long hot days of practicing movements and music over and over and over again to bring together not only a show, but a community of young adults working in sync to showcase their individual talents creating a distinctive performance as one continuous, harmonious team. Briefly looking at 2020, the Somerville Pioneers as with many

of Mr. Matt Krempasky, exemplified what many of us may have felt with the return of school, teams, and clubs, with the musical pieces choreographed and performed “Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing,” “Pure Imagination” and “Look How Far We’ve Come.” Adorned in masks other than when eating or playing, riding buses to venues with the windows open, the return to performing stand-music and half-time at football games reignited the school spirit missed from the previous year. The energy in the stands emitted the pulse and camaraderie of support and enthusiasm of time with classmates and athletes, cheering the team on to their victories. With the competition circuit back on track, though smaller than previous years, the drop in enrollment aligned the Pioneers with their Group 4A peers allowing them to compete with other bands through the USBands network. Whether competing in heat or chilly rain, the band rolled out a stellar performance earning them multiple awards including the Yamaha Cup Championship. Keeping the kids fed and on-point, the dedicated band-parents prepared and served pre-competition meals, loaded and unloaded instruments and rolled-out heavy props at each event and cheered with heartfelt en-

Support the James Kear Hanley Wrestling Scholarship

By Joan Hanley The James Kear Hanley Wrestling Scholarship is awarded to a deserving Somerville High School senior wrestler and honors its namesake’s lifelong selfless support of athletics. After many years of suffering from debilitating illnesses, Jim, my husband of 53 years, died in May of 2016. Our children, Elizabeth and Kear, SHS graduates, and I chose to pay tribute to Jim’s life by creating this scholarship. In lieu of flowers, for his funeral, the family requested donations to establish this tribute of $500 annually.

Over the years, we have maintained the fund, enthusiastically supported also by the Somerville Wrestling Booster Club. We fundraise at home wrestling matches soliciting donations from spectators; we place a container at the concession stand with a short explanation of our goal. Thank you to so many family members and friends for their generosity over the years. The scholarship has been presented to five former Pioneers: Brock Laggini, Tyler Leeds, Jayson Rosales, Nicholas Chabrak

and Jack See. Unfortunately, without concessions last year to add funds, we are slowly diminishing the total. Lately, our family of three has sustained the fund. We need financial aid to continue memorializing Jim’s legacy and award welldeserved scholarships. The public is asked to donate at 2022 Somerville Home Wrestling Matches at the concession stand. Donations also may be made by check: James Kear Hanley Scholarship Fund, PO Box 565, Neshanic Station, NJ 08853; Check to “SHS Athletic Hall of Fame,” Memo: JKH scholarship fund. A Venmo

account is planned as well. Even as Jim’s health presented mobility and balance problems, he never passed up an opportunity to cheer for our grandchildren and teach others the wisdom that comes with age. He endeavored to remain the family “handyman” using duct tape as a fix for everything, perusing plans spanning deck to shed construction, what a Zamboni does, and how to use a divining rod. Above all, Jim acted selflessly to family and friends, seeking those in need, often with humor, especially puns. In his final days, he chose to protect us from how seriously he was suffering. “I’m doing just fine,” he insisted. We search for similar qualities in our recipients. We determine candidate eligibility by fulfilling the following criteria: Senior Varsity Letter Winner, Consistent 2.8 GPA accompanied by official transcript, Positive commitment at practices and meets, Self-motivating, Strength of character and integrity, Will attend instruction for further education, Complete an application meeting the deadline, One letter of recommendation from an academic or elective teacher who knows him or her well, A guidance counselor recommendation, A wrestling coach recommendation, An interview with Joan Hanley, Jim’s widow, searching for specifics about the applicant as well as comparable qualities to Jim’s. The Hanley family invites you to support our effort to continue awarding the James Kear Hanley scholarship for future deserving Pioneers.

Natural Treasures Hidden in Plain View

What's important to you? Let's talk.

As I paddled down the South Branch, an oversized raptor perched on a dead tree branch extending over the river. I could not identify the species and wanted to get some images. I set the boat to drift on a course that would pass directly under the bird. To my surprise it tolerated my presence as I took my limit of images. Still thinking it was some variety of hawk, I continued on my journey. Only when editing the images, I realized I was within intimate distance of a juvenile bald eagle! I had no idea eagles even existed locally; the only one I ever saw was fifty years ago on the upper Delaware River. Consider the misconception created when the most common image of an eagle, as seen exclusively on branding, is that of an adult with a white head and tail. It is easy to ignore or mistake juvenile birds as it takes about four and a half years for the plumage to change to pure white. The thought then occurred, beside eagles, what other unexpected wildlife or endangered

and threatened birds and animals existed in our midst? Rivers serve as ancient migration routes for birds and animals, the pathways imprinted in their DNA. So the opportunity exists to observe unusual species during times of migration and the possibility some may decide to take the exit ramp and remain.

At a glance, the note hanging from the cow’s ear appeared to be a cartoon bubble expressing the animal’s thoughts. The cows are gone, never to return, unlike the diverse collection of wildlife populations reconstituted along our local rivers and open space.

Our natural treasures are hidden in plain view, their legacy continues if we recognize their existence and the importance of protecting the land along our rivers and open space. Contact jjmish57@msn.com. See more articles and photos at winterbearrising.wordpress.com.
