The Sun has got it's hat on - hip hip hip hooray! Yet another month has passed. Can you believe how time flies when you are having fun? If you have walked past the Town Crier offices recently you will notice our window display is all about 'Mad Hatters' - as we are a crazy bunch here! Which leads me nicely into choosing the perfect hat, should you have a wedding or perhaps graduation to attend? See our feature on page.. Travel seems to be on everyone's lips at the moment too...so if you don't have a holiday booked yet at 'Home or Away' see page 6 for lots of inspiration. Us ladies in the office, have planned a trip over to the Isle of Wight to meet with our designer, to keep him on his toes...only joking Richard! Really looking forward to that, I think if you can just step away from the usual routine, that's a holiday in itself! Cocktails have been a favourite with us lately, so as always see our Food and Drink section for ideas.

Portugal

This year I’ve spoken to countless people heading to Portugal, and I was one of them! With good weather, stunning architecture, idyllic beaches, sumptuous food, extravagant wine and cheap accommodation, Portugal is a great budget choice with so much on offer. We chose Porto for its blend of museums, outdoor spaces and port wine culture, but there are many great locations around the country. Don’t pass up a tour of the famous wine cellars and make sure you try the bacalhau – salt dried cod.

Croatia

Gaining popularity, Croatia will soon be a natural choice for British holiday makers, particularly in summer. We went in September when the crowds had mostly dispersed but the weather was still warm. Dubrovnik is steeped in history – a great place for walkers, architecture fanatics and fans of Game of Thrones. From there, escape to somewhere a bit more rural – we recommend the island of Korčula with its historic city and wonderful beaches. On the way, stop off in Mali Ston for the best oysters you’ll ever eat.

Greek Islands

Greece goes in and out of fashion with holidaymakers, but if you’re looking for lazy days on the beach and 6

&

HOME gentle strolls in gorgeous surroundings, you can’t go wrong with choosing the Greek islands. A great choice for families as there are numerous waterparks to visit in Crete, a great way to cool off from the heat. Mediterranean cuisine is light and delicious, leaving you plenty of room to indulge with an ice-cream. The Old Town of Corfu is also worth visiting if you want a break from the beach.

Malta

If you want a foreign holiday but don’t like getting flustered with foreign languages, how about a holiday in Malta? The former British colony is a home away from home for UK holidaymakers. Enjoy warm temperatures as you go snorkelling or swimming in the clear blue waters. Diving is also popular and you can book lessons if you haven’t done it before. Nature trails provide entertainment for hikers and mountain bikers, and there are numerous bars, restaurants and cafés to relax in when the evening draws in.

Hungary

Looking for an adventure on a shoestring? Hungary is a perfect destination for holidaymakers wanting a cheap trip abroad. Don’t just visit Budapest – Drebecen is an often-overlooked destination where you’ll find prices much cheaper. Hungarian food is hearty and exciting: try Halászlé (fisherman’s soup),

Töltött Káposzta (stuffed cabbage leaves), Lángos (deep fried flat bread, best with a sour cream topping), and Kürtös Kalács (known as chimney cake, a perfect sweet treat).

& Cardiff

If you’re looking to get away for a few days without too much hassle, Cardiff is an easy location to reach from Wiltshire and has so much on offer. Cardiff Castle is a fairy tale setting with much to see. The Norman Keep and the wartime shelters are highlights of the grounds, and pay extra for the house tour – it’s absolutely worth it. The National Museum and Gallery of Cardiff has something for everyone and is a top free attraction for rainy days. The Cardiff Market and Arcades will provide you with whatever you need; lunch, coffee, vintage clothing, bespoke art, vinyl records, Welsh cakes and more.

West Yorkshire

For those who enjoy looking at sculptures, there are few places in the UK as worthy of

your time as West Yorkshire. Leeds Art Gallery, The Henry Moore Institute, The Hepworth Wakefield, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park are all places where you can view stunning works of art. The Yorkshire Sculpture International is a new celebration of the artwork on offer, so look out for special events. The nearby Salts Mill has a fascinating history behind it and is a great place to indulge in some retail therapy.

Scottish Highlands

Want to get away from it all but can’t afford to go abroad? With stunning views on offer across the highlands, who needs exotic travel? The Scottish Highlands offer unrivalled vistas and bracing walks in unadulterated fresh air. If you’re finding the summer heat a bit much to bear, you’ll find the highlands much cooler, especially if you’re into mountain climbing. The Caledonian Sleeper Experience isn’t cheap, but there are reclining seats available that are still a stylish way to travel.

vegan and vegetarian options. If you’re into arts and crafts, hippie attire, healing crystals or quirky jewellery, you’ll find much of interest in Glastonbury. Yoga retreats are a popular getaway in this area, and you’re just a stone’s throw away from Cheddar Gorge. If you like cheese, what more could you ask for?

Channel Islands

Not quite exotic and not quite local, the Channel Islands offer a refreshing break you can reach from Bristol airport in under an hour. Jersey has Durrell zoo, Guernsey has Victor Hugo’s house, and both have gorgeous sprawling beaches, historic castles and museums on wartime and military themes. Hop across to Herm – the whole island is basically a beach. Or go further afield to Sark where you can enjoy clifftop walks, horse and carriage rides and starry skies at night. Alderney is a top pick for bird watchers wanting a quiet getaway.

Glastonbury

Just because the festival is over doesn’t mean that Glastonbury is off limits. Enjoy a bracing walk up the tor before relaxing in one of the trendy cafés or bars, many of which offer plentiful 7

Let’s not forget the reason we work so hard to bring the Carnival and Festival to Malmesbury, not only to continue the 90 year history and bring the community together, but also to raise funds for local good causes. A.C.T.S THEATRE ARTS SCHOOL

September 21st 2019 brings the opening of Calne’s very own theatre school. A.C.T.S Theatre Arts School aims to give young people aged 6 – 17 years “A Chance To Sparkle”. They’re flagship school has been running in Warminster since 2011, and following its success, Calne has been chosen as the town in which the second school will open. Students of the new school will be given professional tuition in drama, singing and dance classes every week. There will be plenty of opportunities to throw all three elements together giving them the full theatre arts experience. Fynamore Primary school provides the venue giving the students plenty of space in which to rehearse. Families can see progress in action through end of term demonstrations and performances. Alongside all the experience gained, students get the chance to gain qualifications in musical theatre to go on their CVs. A.C.T.S will be looking to get students out in the community performing and Chris is already in discussions with many local groups for this purpose. A.C.T.S is currently enrolling students for September full details of the enrolment process see our website: www.actstheatreschool.com

Stay cool in a pool this summer

Kids love to splash in a pool on a hot summer’s day. If you are thinking of buying one, we have some top tips.

By Sarah Davey

Inflatable pools - These are easily inflated so can be up and filled as soon as the sunshine appears. Smaller inflatable pools are ideal for toddlers and can be inflated by one person with a good set of lungs, but larger pools can accommodate the whole family - you will probably prefer to inflate these with a pump! Quick up pools -

These are super-easy to set up. Spread the pool out and inflate the top ring. The design of the pool means that as you fill it with water the sides of the pool will rise up. These are particularly good if storage space is tight.

Frame pools - Sturdier pools with a bigger bathing area. Frame pools are ideal for larger families and groups of teens.

Look for rust-resistant galvanised metal frames; heavy-duty PVC and polyester 3-ply walls; beams and joints that pin or snap together for fast, easy construction. A filter pump to keep the water clean, and a repair patch kit to mend small tears or punctures. Site your pool on a level surface, with plenty of room to make it easy and safe to get in and out. Remember, toddlers and young children should be supervised at all times.

Former Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell OBE is renowned for his illustrations in his own and other children’s books including the Goth Girl series, The Edge Chronicles, Ottoline, Muddle Earth, The Emperor of Absurdia and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. His own latest book is Guardians of Magic, the first in a new series, The Cloud Horse Chronicles, in which three ordinary children, with extraordinary gifts, come together to defeat the enemies who threaten the mysterious cloud horses. Riddell will be appearing at Marlborough Town Hall on Sunday 29 September at 12 noon. Suitable for 9-12 year olds.

26 - 29 September, 2019 www.marlboroughlitfest.org Marlborough LitFest aims to promote a love of books and reading to its younger audience and this year’s children’s line-up is more packed than ever, with a host of headlining children’s authors including Cressida Cowell, David Baddiel and illustrator, Chris Riddell, as well as events and new outreach programmes to cater for all ages at this year’s 10th Anniversary Festival, from 26 – 29 September.

Bestselling children’s author Cressida Cowell of How To Train Your Dragon, is no stranger to Marlborough. A former student at the college, she entranced audiences at the inaugural LitFest in 2010. Since that appearance, her Dragon series has sold more than eight million copies and become a major DreamWorks movie franchise – the third film came out earlier this year. Cowell has also written a new bestselling series, The Wizards of Once

and will be talking about the latest instalment, Knock Three Times, as well as her Dragon books, and offering tips on how to become a children’s author. Cressida will be appearing at Marlborough Town Hall on Saturday 28 September at 4.30pm. Suitable for 9+ years old. Following on hard in the footsteps of David Walliams last year brings another comedian, TV presenter and writer to Marlborough, David Baddiel. His debut children’s novel, The Parent Agency, was a bestseller in 2014 and since then, he’s written four more bestselling books aimed at 9-12 year olds. His latest, Head Kid, is about the naughtiest boy in the school swapping bodies with his ultra-strict headmaster. Baddiel has also written four novels for adults and continues to tour as a stand-up comedian. He will appear at the Memorial Hall, Marlborough College on Sunday 29 September at 3pm. Suitable for 9-12 year olds.

The bestselling author of Sir Charlie Stinky Socks, Kristina Stephenson will be leading a lively interactive event with music and theatrics for her young fans at this year’s LitFest, talking about her picture book, Why Are There So Many Books About Bears? Stephenson’s career as a producer and writer for the BBC led to the zany world of Sir Charlie and she will be appearing at St Mary’s Church Hall on Saturday 28 September at 10.30am. Suitable for 4+ years. Free Events for Schools Every year, LitFest is proud to offer free events with popular authors for invited local schools. Since its launch in 2010 the Festival has reached more than 3,500 children with these author talks. This year John Dougherty, poet and author of Stinkbomb and Ketchup Face, will be entertaining children from local primary schools and the prolific local author Geraldine Mccaughrean will be this year’s Big School Read at St John’s Academy for local secondary schools, talking about her most recent book Where the World Ends. Older brothers and sisters are welcome too. For the full Festival programme, tickets and more information, visit www.marlboroughlitfest.org 23

Katie, who’s 21 and lives in Studley, has just joined the company as an administrator after working in childcare. “I wanted a new challenge,” Katie said. “I thoroughly enjoyed working in my previous role in childcare. I’ve grown up with the family business and now felt the right time to become part of it. I have to say I’m loving it. Every day is different, I’m getting to know the customers and the ebb and flow of working within the trades sector.” In joining the company Katie is ensuring the success of this growing company has a real family feel. Co-founders John and Debbie Williams are her parents and her sister Georgina already works within the company as the office manager. “Family is important to us and we have always wanted to make it clear we are a caring family business. It makes sense for Katie to join us so that we can all serve the community in which we live for years to come,” Debbie said. SALMON Mango Salsa & COCONUT RICE

ALL SPICE

Method:

You will need:

Easily confused with a peppercorn, allspice is distinguishable by its heady aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg and juniper. It is the dried berry of the Jamaican pepper tree, called the Pimento tree. Don’t be confused by some spice companies who may sell a mixture of spices with an Allspice label - make sure you’re getting the real thing! Salmon fillets Olive Oil 1 Lime 1 Lemon Garlic Coconut water Can of coconut milk

Jasmine rice 1 mango 1 red pepper 1 red onion 1 avocado Corriander Salt & pepper

1. Make a marinade with a slug of olive oil (approx 3 tablespoons), 3 crushed garlic cloves, a squeeze of lemon and some lime zest. Rub over your salmon and chill for a few hrs or overnight. Oven cook when ready. 2. Cook your rice according to the packet instructions replacing water with 1/2 coconut water and 1/2 coconut milk. Fluff with a fork once the liquid is absorbed. 3. For the salsa, chop the mango, avocado, red pepper and onion into bite sized chunks and put into a bowl. Chop your corriander and stir in. Mix a tablespoon of olive oil with the rest of the lime juice and a splash of coconut water. Season with salt & pepper and toss to combine into a chunky salsa. Serve the rice, topped with the refreshing salsa and grilled baked salmon for a lovely summer meal!

30

Allspice is a wonderful addition to dishes from its native Caribbean such as beef patties and jerk but it is also an important ingredient in many pickles and chutneys, vegetables, stews, curries and soups. With its sweet flavor it is also well suited in cakes and cookies and can also be sprinkled on the top of desserts or porridge. Indeed it is often the main flavouring used in barbecue sauces and sausages. For grinding allspice at home, make sure you use a metal grinder since the oil found in the spice can damage plastic.

Mocktail By Kelly Taylor

No alcohol allowed? No problem. Enjoy a mocktail instead.

People don’t drink alcohol for many reasons: pregnancy, medication, religious reasons, designated driver status…or because they just don’t drink alcohol (like me!). It used to bug me at social gatherings when people asked me what I wanted to drink, reeling off a whole list of possibilities: gin and tonic, vodka and orange, rum and coke, and I’d say, ‘Do you have anything non-alcoholic?’ and the choice would be tonic without the gin, orange without the vodka or coke without the rum!

32

I became adept at creating my own non-alcoholic drinks which felt ‘special’. Along the way I discovered that lots of my friends drink alcohol at parties because of the lack of alternatives! People who do drink alcohol would LOVE to have a non-alcoholic option too, and recently the mocktail (mock cocktail) has been gaining popularity. Here’s how to turn any cocktail into a delicious mocktail and delight your non-alcohol-drinking friends. The key element in most good mocktails is something sparkly. This elevates the drink and makes it feel more special than glass of juice. Any cocktail recipe which uses club soda, tonic water,

ginger ale, or ginger beer will probably translate to a good mocktail. Some nonsparkly drinks translate well too. These tend to be the spicy ones like Bloody Marys, where you don’t miss the alcoholic component.

Flavour is everything. Mocktails should be special, so try something different. Start with the syrups. Buy good quality ones (Bottle Green cordials work brilliantly and come in a range of amazing flavours - I love Rhubarb and Ginger) or make your own, it’s simple. Combine one-part sugar (white or brown), honey or agave syrup, and one-part water with fresh fruit, herbs, or spices to add flavour.

Hour Simmer over medium heat until the mixture is completely liquid. Strain, cool and use to flavour your mocktails.

Try infusing your drinks with fresh fruit and herbs. A bunch of mint or basil, or a sprig of lavender or rosemary takes a mocktail to the next level, as does fruit. Layer on more flavour with the garnish. Dip the rims of glasses in flavoured salts or sugars, and use citrus slices, pineapple, olives or other fresh ingredients to add flavour and fragrance to your drink to make it a sensory experience. Cocktail umbrellas and decorative sparklers won’t add flavour, but they do make any drink look more celebratory.

Totally Tropical Tea-zinger A refreshing iced tea-based mocktail full of tropical flavour, with added zing from the ginger beer and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Serves 1 but will scale up

Ingredients Tropical fruit tea bag (use your favourite, Peach is lovely, or Mango and lychee...or mix them up a bit), brewed in 90ml water, then brought to room temperature and chilled. Splash of fruit syrup – something with tropical overtones. 60ml good quality ginger beer (try Fever Tree) 30ml fresh-squeezed orange juice. orange wedges and cocktail umbrella for garnish.

Don’t forget the ice. Lots of ice. You can buy bags of it for a party if making it ahead of time is too much hassle.

You can scale up the ingredients but don’t scrimp on the teabags. You need all the flavour!

Does every cocktail translate to a mocktail?

Instructions

Well no…drinks with only two ingredients don't really work, because as previously stated, a rum and coke without the rum is just coke right? And I find the sweet ones can be a bit cloying for me and taste too ‘desserty’ but if you have a sweet tooth knock yourself out.

Put plenty of crushed ice into a tall glass. Pour over the syrup; add the tea, ginger beer, Stir gently to combine. Garnish with an orange wedge, lychees on a cocktail stick, and cocktail umbrellas.

My youngest loves a virgin pinacolada. And talking of children, making mocktails is a great summer holiday project the whole family can all enjoy! 33

Le-Ki-Pi Ingredients 1 kiwi 3 pineapple cubes (tinned is fine and yo can remove them from the can and freeze them to use as required!) Good quality lemonade (Fever tree is excellent) or lemon sparkling water. Honey to taste. Mint to garnish

Instructions Peel and slice the kiwi and place into a small food processor or blender. Warm the honey very slightly until runny. Add the pineapple chunks and honey to the kiwi. Pulse blend to make a thin, wellblended puree.

The Perfect Virgin Bloody Mary

Place crushed ice in a tumbler, and fill half full with the lemonade or lemon sparkling water. Divide the puree and pour in each glass. Stir gently and garnish with mint and slice of kiwi.

500 ml tomato juice Juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp fresh horseradish (more if you like it hot) Splash of Worcestershire sauce Celery salt White pepper tabasco sauce

Place plenty of crushed ice in a large glass jug. Mix the tomato juice and lemon juice and pour it straight over the ice. Add the horseradish, 3 shakes of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco to taste. Then add a pinch of celery salt and white pepper. Stir until the outside of the jug feels cold, then strain the cocktail into 2 tall glasses. Top up with fresh ice, and garnish with a celery stick and olives or a lemon slice.

A brief history of cider Cider is a popular and delicious summer drink, but have you ever wondered who first thought about turning apples into alcohol? Apple trees have been cultivated since around the 5th century AD and cider, or something similar, seems to have been around for almost as long, although sometimes it was known as ‘apple wine.’

Cheers!

It was brought to Britain by the Normans in around 1100 AD and was originally a drink for the poor. Ale was made from malted barley and using grain for alcohol could mean going without bread, so cider provided a good alternative. People drank it instead of water because sanitation was so poor, and water was often not safe to drink. It is believed that children were even baptised using cider because the water was so risky! The first settlers in America planted lots of apple trees simply so they could continue to make cider to drink. Originally, they crushed the apples in a trough, until a genius named John Worlidge produced the first apple-mill in 1676. In the 1800s The Temperance movement killed off the cider industry. Fired up by speeches from ministers and politicians, many farmers destroyed their ‘demon orchards,’ sparing only the trees used for sweet non-alcoholic juice. During the Prohibition years, American cider production fell by 76%. Today the best English cider is cask-conditioned; dry and fruity, with low carbonation. Normandy cider is sweeter and more effervescent with a complex flavour. Both drinks are perfect chilled, served on a warm summer evening, with friends.

Is long term elderly care free at the point of delivery? We asked Andrew Douglas, Partner at Awdry Bailey & Douglas Solicitors who specialises elderly care, for his views on this issue? Surely elderly care is no different from the NHS? Unfortunately, the system is the exact opposite. 45% of people in long term care homes are private funders. 10% end up with bills in excess of £150,000. The system in England expects everybody to pay something. Those with capital assets in excess of £23,250 have to fully fund their elderly care in a care home or at home. If you are a self funder do you pay more than people who are funded by their local authority? In March 2017 a report from the Commons Committee on Communities and Local Government found that self funders paid 43% more for the same bed and services compared with their state funded neighbours.

CRAFTY CORNER

P

Silk dye is concentrated and must be mixed with water. You can choose either steamfixing or iron-fixing dye. Gutta is used to draw outlines and prevent colours from running together. To apply the paint, you’ll need a variety of paintbrushes and pipette droppers. If you’re a beginner, look out for starter kits that provide all these pieces together.

Practical uses

Silk is just one of many materials you can paint onto, but the result is quite different compared to painting on paper or wood. This delicate art form can be used to make both practical and beautiful objects. Many people find silk painting a relaxing way to practice mindfulness and improve their mental health.

History Silk painting originates in Asia, and the earliest surviving silk painting dates to 165 BC. There are different types of silk, but the best known comes from the cocoons of the mulberry silkworm. Silk has been cultivated in China for over 8,000 years, and was traded along the Silk Road.

What you will need Silk can’t be laid on a table like paper because the paint will seep straight through, so the material needs to be stretched over a frame. There are various types of silk you can choose from – for beginners, a cheaper material such as habotai is a good choice, especially in a white colour and medium weight. To fix the silk to the frame you’ll need threelegged silk pins to prevent holes and tears.

Silk scarves and handkerchiefs are the perfect summer accessory and can be used to add a flourish to an otherwise drab outfit. Silk paintings make beautiful gifts, whether framed behind glass, hung Chinese style like a scroll or displayed as a suncatcher in an embroidery hoop.

Learning to do it

If you’ve bought a kit, follow the instructions provided or check out the WikiHow step-bystep guide. For inspiration, there are countless Youtube tutorials for both beginners and more advanced painters.

Locally

Silk painting artist Nicola Davis has an Etsy shop selling both her hand-crafted creations as well as silk painting kits for you to try out at home. She also runs both one-to-one and group workshops for creating silk scarves or suncatchers – a perfect choice for a birthday party, hen do or Women’s Institute event. Book onto an open workshop or contact Nicola to run a private one, available in various locations around Wiltshire. https://www.nicoladaviscrafts.co.uk/ 41

When we think of the gym we usually picture ourselves jogging on a treadmill, or pounding a cross-trainer, nonstop for 45 minutes.

Some people love it, and get a real buzz from a session, but if you're like me you'll count every single second as you wait for the torture to stop. What if you could get more health benefits by doing just half the exercise? When I heard this was a possibility at the gym I attend I couldn’t sign-up fast enough. Enter HIIT, High Intensity Interval Training (pronounced ‘hit’). 44

HIIT involves short periods, 30 seconds or so, of high intensity exercise followed by equally short rest periods which you repeat for around 20 to 30 minutes. The idea is to work as hard as you possibly can during each work session, then catch your breath, then repeat. At the end of the whole work out you should be totally exhausted. At this point you might be thinking that the 45-minute gentle jog isn't sounding so bad after all, but HIIT has a number of real advantages. Each work period can be a different exercise. Some can be cardio; some can be strength exercises. This keeps

the workout interesting (good if like me you are easily bored) and also gives you the twin benefits of improving fitness and building muscle.

High intensity exercise burns more calories and more fat. Because you are working flat out your body needs to expend a lot more energy. It can't keep pace with your needs by simply burning easily accessible temporary carbohydrate stores, so it has to start burning fat. It also needs a lot more oxygen which is why you get out of breath. But this raises your body's metabolism to a much higher level than simply jogging.

So, when you finish exercise your body stays in this high-energy state for much longer burning even more calories. Your whole body has to work a lot harder to keep up with the exercise, especially your heart. In fact HIIT strengthens your whole cardiovascular system. It's also very good at reducing insulin resistance (one of the precursors to type ll diabetes) which makes it much easier for your body to regulate your blood sugar, as well as helping to high blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity and more.

o t y t e i r va e m o e s m i g Add e r s s e n t i f your HIIT is easily tailored to any fitness level. If you pop to your local gym, you'll usually find beginner, intermediate and advanced level sessions. But if the gym really isn't your thing, it’s easy to do a HIIT work out at home. There are lots of apps and videos to help you out.

Spending just 20 minutes, three times a week on HIIT will kick your health drive into top gear, so why not give High Intensity Interval training a try? 45

THE GAME Choose The Perfect Hat

By Sarah Davey

Weddings, Race events, Polo; there are many opportunities throughout the summer to wear a hat, but which one should you choose? How do you avoid making an expensive mistake? First you need to look at your face shape. Oval-shaped faces can get away with almost any style. A large brimmed hat should be tilted backwards slightly so that it frames your face. If you have a square or round face, choose a hat with a large brim and wear it slanted. A long face looks lovely with a beret style or even a Matador style. Glasses can be a bit tricky but choose a hat with an upturned brim style so that it doesn't feel like you are hiding behind a lot of face furniture! There is a bit of an art to hat wearing. You need to think about your hairstyle. Hair should complement the hat. Hats nearly always look better worn with hair up, because it accentuates the neck. Small hats should rest just above the eyebrow, they look wrong perched on the very top of the head. If in doubt, ask the stylist in the shop. They will be trained to help you choose the right piece and talk you through how to wear it to best effect. Try lots of styles, colours and textures. Make the most of trained staff. Let them be your guide. They will get a kick out of finding exactly the right hat for you.

Don't shy away from 'big' hats because they generally look smaller once they are actually on your head. Most people start with an outfit and try to find a hat to complement it. But it might be better to do it the other way around. If you fall in love with a hat that's a real statement piece, then you should keep your dress and accessories minimal to allow it to take centre stage. If you've already got the outfit though, then pick out elements such as colour or fabric, to try and match. Exact matches are not necessary, sometimes complementing tones work better.

You shouldn't pick anything you feel you have to fuss or fidget with; you should feel completely confident. As the hat designer Piers Atkinson says, "Make sure the hat doesn't wear you; you wear the hat!"

If you are very lucky you might have a dress and hat hire establishment in your town. This can be an excellent way to get the outfit and hat of your dreams for a fraction of the cost of buying it outright. At the end of the day you have to feel happy, confident and comfortable in your chosen hat. Physical comfort is the most important factor. 49

Top tips for Summer by Emma Bailey

BVSc, MRCVS The George Veterinary Hospital

T

HE summer is now in full swing and those pesky grass seeds are out in abundance. Grass seeds are very tiny and found at the top of long stems of grass. They have very pointy ends and can find their way into eyes, ears, feet and even work their way under the skin. If your dog, like many, loves running through long fields of grass, be sure to check them over afterwards and remove any grass seeds you find. Another tip is to keep fur nice and short in the summer months particularly around the feet, so the seeds are less likely to get stuck! If a grass seed does find its way onto your dog you may notice they start shaking their head, rubbing their eyes or licking vigorously at their feet – there may even be a swelling between the toes. If you notice any of these signs, please contact us, and we can help remove the grass seed and get your pet feeling more comfortable!

We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of ticks causing problems recently. If you walk your pooch in fields or woodland, especially if sheep or deer have grazed there, check them after each walk for any ticks. They are easily removed using the correct implement (the O’Tom tick twister works brilliantly). Using tweezers or your fingers can be successful, but you do run the real risk of decapitating the tick and leaving its mouthparts behind! This can cause a boil-like abscess at the attachment site. There are now some really good oral tick prevention treatments (lasting 4 or even 12 weeks after administration) available so ask your vet about these if you walk in these tick areas.

Something else you’ll need to be wary of this summer is the risk of bee and wasp stings. These cause local inflammation, swelling and even hives. It is always prudent to contact us for advice especially when stings are on the head or neck area where any swelling could compromise breathing. If the reaction is away from these areas, and fairly small, then cold compresses with a bag of frozen veg wrapped in a towel can provide some relief. Do not leave the compress on for more than 5 minutes without a break. Antihistamines can be given but WITH CARE as only certain types can be given to dogs – you should contact a vet for guidance before administering these.

Black-eyed Susan You might not know its name, but you are probably familiar with the Rudbeckia. A late summer perennial daisy. It’s sometimes called Coneflower or Black-eyed Susan.

It flowers from early August to late September and I find it a valuable addition to the late summer garden. It does particularly well in full sun in rich, well-drained soil. You can sow them as annuals indoors in spring to set out after frost or plant as perennials in spring or autumn. Divide every 3 to 4 years and deadhead to avoid self-seeding, though personally I see self-seeding as a bonus trait in a plant! Mildew can be an issue on the foliage but can be avoided if you don’t overcrowd the plants. Watch the young foliage because slugs and snails find it tasty. Once the plants are established this isn’t a problem. Rudbeckia ‘Golden compass’ produces masses of classic bright yellow and black Rudbeckia flowers on a bushy plant. It grows up to 70cm in height and can be grown from seed as a half-hardy annual or a short-lived hardy perennial. 68

Rudbeckia fulgida is the classic ‘Black-eyed Susan’, with sunflower-yellow flowers and a very black central cone. It does better in damper ground than many of the varieties so choose this one if your garden is less welldrained.

If your soil is on the dry side, try Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Deamii’. It produces shining, golden flowers with jet-black cones from early September to late October and into November. It has slightly smaller flowers, but they are lovely, and abundant.

I love Rudbeckia ‘Prairie glow’. It is a stunning plant and good for adding height as it grows to 1.5m. Its huge 6cm diameter flowers have warm orange petals with yellow tips.

Rudbeckias naturally grow in dry savannahs, grassland prairies and in the glades of rocky upland forests across North America but they have become a much-loved bushy stalwart of the herbaceous border and will delight from late summer right through the autumn.

Rudbeckia ‘Irish eyes’ is a more unusual variety with a yellowish rather than brown cone, as well as yellow florets. It repeat flowers from July through to October.

Wildlife Trust asks for Hedgehog Heroes The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is calling on the county’s residents to become ‘Hedgehog Heroes’ by recording their sightings of the prickly hedge-dwellers. The Trust has this week launched its Hedgehog Citizen Science Campaign, designed to increase data on the location and number of hedgehogs across Wiltshire. Data collected by Wiltshire’s residents will be sent to the Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Records Centre and used to generate a report on the health of the county's hedgehog populations and recommendations for local policymakers. Those joining the campaign will be sent regular updates and advice and materials to help them record their sightings and make their garden hedgehog-friendly. The Trust is also encouraging people to contribute photo diaries, video blogs and regular written updates to be shared throughout its hedgehog citizen science community. The campaign is being supported by the Beatrice Gillam Memorial Fund, honouring the legacy of one of Wiltshire’s most ardent wildlife champions.

Dr Gary Mantle MBE, Chief Executive of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, said: “Sadly, UK hedgehog numbers have fallen by more than 30% over the past decade. Garden pesticides, contaminated water, loss of habitat, and traffic collisions have all led to a dramatic fall in hedgehog numbers and they have now largely disappeared from our countryside. “By joining our Hedgehog Citizen Science Campaign, the people of Wiltshire can play a vital role in saving the county's hedgehogs. We need people to record their hedgehog sightings and monitor their behaviour and movements: gardens and local parks are hedgehog strongholds and often the best places to spot them, as these habitats provide a plentiful supply of food and potential nest sites for breeding, resting and hibernation. “With people’s help as citizen scientists, we can start to build up data on hedgehog numbers across the county and identify where to best focus our conservation efforts.” Those interested can join the campaign and log their sightings at www.wiltshirewildlife.org/hedgehog

SWIFT

ATTITUDE

By Tim Barnes-Clay

Suzuki Swift Attitude 2019 is a good seller for the Japanese automaker And now it hopes the latest Swift Attitude will boost sales even higher.

The special edition model is anticipated to account for up to 40 per cent of all Suzuki Swift sales in Britain during 2019 and beyond. The £14,599 Attitude is centred around the mid-spec SZ-T grade but includes a slightly sportier body kit, a new spoiler, a mesh grille and 16-inch alloys. However, where the standard Swift SZ-T trim houses a 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit, poke in the Attitude come from a non-turbocharged 1.2 Dualjet powerplant. This has been harvested from the basic SZ-3, driving the wheels via a fivespeed manual transmission. The Attitude’s engine may sound a bit lame in comparison with a turbo assisted one, but it’s still a fun, nimble hatch to drive. This is because the car only weighs 980kg and has a short wheelbase. The Swift Attitude is forgiving, too. You can chuck the little tyke into corners at the last second without any worry that the Suzuki might have a

74

tantrum. Indeed, the car almost enjoys being driven hard. Of course, the Attitude is not a hot-hatch, but it’s a seriously engaging supermini – if burning along twisty rural lanes is your thing. Mind you; its off-theline performance isn’t quite so exciting. A zero to 62mph time of 11.9 seconds isn’t going to mean you’ll be changing your underwear any time soon.

The Swift isn’t unacceptably underpowered, though - its light weight helps with this; you just need to stir the gears hard and keep your right foot down to feel the speed. The car is also economical, returning over 50mpg on an average run.

When it comes to ride quality, you’ll find the Swift Attitude comfortable, for fourup. And even though the cabin is awash with plastics and the steering column doesn’t have reach adjustment, it offers a lot for just £14,599. Certainly, for this amount, the Suzuki is a sensible second car, or it could even serve as the main car for a small family.

What repairs can I claim / cannot claim against my rental property? This is a common difficulty when calculating net rental property income and you should really seek advice. It depends on what the expenses were and when they were incurred. You can claim for maintenance and repairs/renewals. Repairing or replacing should be ‘like-for-like’ as much as possible (there may be no modern equivalent to the original item) but you cannot claim for repairs that constitute an improvement to the property. e.g. You may make a claim to replace a bath but not for installing an extra shower unit. You can also claim for repairs incurred in preparing the property for rental. Pre -letting expenses are treated as incurred on the first day of rental. Repairs incurred prior to the ‘decision’ to rent the property are not claimable. Since April 2016, you can claim for replacing furniture and white goods in a rented property – but not for the original furnishing of the property. Peter Bromiley ACA

Seymour House, operated by The Orders of St John Care Trust, is being supported by Sainsbury’s Chippenham. The initiative is a part of the supermarket’s 150th birthday celebrations, which includes 150 days of volunteering across the country that continues the company’s history of putting local communities first. Colleagues from the Chippenham store will be volunteering in the garden, reading to residents and engaging in various home activities. This partnership along with Sainsbury’s 150-year milestone was celebrated at the home on the 29th of May. The Sainsbury’s team kindly brought with them cakes, bunting and a garden activity for the residents. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all and gratitude for the time the Sainsbury’s team spent interacting and conversing with the Seymour House residents, carers and volunteers. Dawn Wallburton, Home Manager of Seymour House, comments: “We would like to thank Sainsbury’s Chippenham for their support and commitment to our home. We are really looking forward to building on our relationship and working closely together for the benefit of the residents.” Store Manager, Val Atwill said: “We’re really excited to be helping Seymour House; it’s a great way for our colleagues to come together and support the community. It’s so important for us to give back to our local community and what better time than in our 150th year.” A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “In this landmark year, we want to give back to the communities we have been a part of for a century and half and bring them into the celebrations. The diversity of causes that our colleagues care about just goes to show the values that run through our business – and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact these 150 days has on the people we care about.”

The Dalai Lama’s Cat by David Michie

By Willow Coby

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J K Rowling

Well, what can we say about the Harry Potter series that has not already been said? These seven books are now inspiring a second generation of young readers, and this one, the third in the series, is regarded by many as one of the best. Why review it now? Well, 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of its publication. Yes, that’s right – it really has been that long! So what makes this book so many people’s favourite (and mine too)? Harry and his friends are now in the equivalent of Year 9 and have hit the hormonal teenage years. New characters such as Sirius Black and Remus Lupin are introduced and we learn more about the family Harry lost as a baby. Together Harry and his friends try to save Buckbeak the Hippogriff from execution, and use Hermione’s time turner to go back in time to right some wrongs as the story builds to an exciting climax.

Cats are odd creatures. Like dogs they accompany us through our lives but unlike dogs they tend to remain distant members of our households. They observe us, looking on in a slightly aloof, condescending manner, always ready to remind us that we don’t actually own them. Imagine what their view of our lives and our daily discussions would be. Imagine they give us their views on life. In this novel David Michie does exactly that. What if the Dalai Lama’s cat wandered freely in and out of the rooms in his home? What would he hear within the walls of the house as the Dalai Lama entertains famous people and spiritual seekers from across the world? This delightful novel (which has spawned a trilogy) is a short read but is one that will stay with you. It is narrated by HHC (His Holiness’ Cat) and tells his life story from being a tiny kitten rescued from the streets of New Delhi, whisked away to His Holiness’ retreat in the Himalayas. He learns a lot from his new owner and sees life in a different way as a result. Described by some as a brief introduction to Buddhist philosophy, no matter what faith you are – or even if you have no faith – you will find words of wisdom in this meditative novel.

More than anything this is a book about enduring family love as Harry discovers the godfather he never knew about, and learns that he is capable of so much more than he ever thought he was.

M

ost of us nowadays have a mobile phone. I tend to use mine as a ‘phone’ unlike many others who use theirs to surf the net or for social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I do however use my tablet for Facebook.I have found it life enhancing as I keep in contact with my extended family and friends whom I get to see very rarely. Over the years I have become increasingly concerned about the things people tend to post on their social media accounts. Even people within my own family have often posted statements that I know to be untrue, or things that are very unkind. The archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said recently “there is no such thing as an alternative fact” and invited social media users to engage with an attitude of “truth, kindness, welcome, inspiration and togetherness” when online. He expressed his concern at how “savagely social media can be used”. “Look at any article, and then look at the comments below it and very quickly you find stuff that is just poison.” In an attempt to counter the problem, the Church of England published a set of social media guidelines, built around three principles - truth, kindness and welcome. “When you’re talking on social media, put the truth out. There’s no such thing as an alternative fact: there are opinions, and there is truth. When you are expressing an opinion, do so with kindness. And be welcoming: don’t throw out stuff, tweet or post things, that is a shut-out. That’s not the point of social media. It is social media. We don’t want people to lie, to act with crueltyit’s the golden rule that Jesus talks about: treat others as you would like to be treated.” I have often become so irritated with the things people post that I have thought about closing my Facebook account. However, after some reflection I decided to attempt to graciously correct people’s ‘alternative truths’and always speak with kindness. Each time I interact online I have the opportunity

either to add to current cynicism and abuse or to choose instead to share light and grace.I have noted recently how it makes a difference, and hopefully makes other users think before they post. You and I don’t have the power to change all that is wrong in the world but we do have the power to change things within our sphere of influence. Being kind and showing respect should be at the heart of our values whether we do it face to face or online, and we need to learn to hear and respect the other point of view, but we should also graciously work to reveal truth where others have tried to change perceptions with ‘alternative facts’. Social media is a great thing when used for good. I’d like to encourage you to use it to enhance our lives rather than undermine them. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
