Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the September Magazine! Now the school summer holidays are over, we have a “Back to School” feeling this month in the Town Crier. With this in mind we have several articles on the theme of back to school, and even learning to play a musical instrument. Talking of music reminds me to mention the Calne Music and Arts Festival which starts on 1st October. See page 14 for full details. It's also Calne Heritage week in September with a large number of events to take part in - visit www.calne.gov.uk/your-community.aspx for information on all the events.

There's more local history this month too - many thanks to everyone who sent in contributions to this issue - including the Wiltshire Home Guard, Wilts and Berks Canal Trust, Cherhill WI and many more. Until next time ...

RUH Make a Will Month Members of the general public across the Royal United Hospital’s catchment area are being urged to make or update their Will as local solicitors waive their fees and show they care by supporting the RUH’s charity, The Forever Friends Appeal. Sixteen local solicitors have teamed up with The Forever Friends Appeal to give their support to its first ever RUH Will month scheme this September to encourage people to plan for the future and help get their affairs in order, whilst helping their local hospital. To help raise as much money as possible throughout September, the participating solicitors will prepare and draw up a single standard Will at a reduced price of £100 or two standard Mirror Wills for £150.00. This fee will then be waived by the solicitor and donated directly to The Forever Friends Appeal for the benefit of all patients across the Trust. The client will be able to choose an area of the RUH they wish to support with the donation. Making a Will is one of the most thoughtful and important things you can do to protect those you love. Yet it is surprising that fewer than half of people have made one. Having an up to date Will which reflects their current situation is something a lot of people put off, thinking that there will be time to do it later and simply haven’t got around to it. Yet it can take years to sort out someone’s estate if they die without a Will, leaving their loved ones in great distress. Whatever your age, if you’ve assets eg a house, savings, or a business and people or others you’d like to look after, consider making a will. Jan Witt, Legacy Officer, says, “Some of the best and worst days of our lives will be spent in the Royal United Hospital, Bath. By taking part in the RUH Will month scheme and putting your own affairs in order, will not only help your loved ones in the future, but also the patients, family and their friends cared for by the RUH.” Jan Witt continues “We are enormously grateful and absolutely thrilled with the number of solicitors who are generously giving their time for free and providing

the public with affordable Wills in support of The Forever Friends Appeal and donating their fees to help the hospital to help continue its valuable work it does, it is truly appreciated! Being the very first time we have ran this type of scheme, we are hoping that the general public will come onboard with Will month and show their support whilst having peace of mind that their affairs will be put in order.” To take part in the scheme simply call one of the participating solicitors now and make your appointment for September stating that you are taking part in the RUH’s Make a Will Month or contact Jan Witt for an information leaflet on Tel 01225 825819 or email jan.witt@nhs.net / visit www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk/make-a-will-month for full details of all the participating solicitors.

Ballad of Martha Brown Saturday 26th September, 7.30 pm Kington Langley Village Hall www.angelexit.co.uk Angel Exit’s original drama is based on the life and times of Martha Brown, the last woman publicly hanged in Dorset in 1856. It is a tale of jealousy and passion; an ordinary woman and her ordinary husband, a hatchet grabbed in haste, a murder, a wrongly accused horse, a black silk dress, the hangman from London and the mob at the hang-fair who gawp in glee. Presented in the company’s rich visual style, blending inventive storytelling and striking physicality, this show is spliced through with wicked humour, an original score, live music and macabre songs. “This play is actually a lot of fun.... a joyously satisfying romp with just five superbly talented and versatile actors... a joyous and inspirational interpretation of this sad story.” “Angel Exit are consummate storytellers. Highly recommended.” British Theatre Guide “Martha’s story is a shocking reflection on the ownership, sexism and blood-lust of the time, and Angel Exit have found a hugely entertaining, visually stunning and choreographically astonishing way to tell it” Fine Times Recorder “A macabre comedy cabaret, the story of Martha Brown is told by a chorus using music, sounds and dance to tell her life in various creative ways. The imagery used is dark but also a lot of fun... an entertaining and illuminating play with a devilishly fantastic cast” What’s on Stage Tickets: £7 full, £6 concessions (senior citizens, students & benefit claimants), £4.50 children (under 16), £18.50 family (2 adults & 2 children). Available from events@ klvh.org, 01249 750362 or Langley Fitzurse School Office (9 - 12 weekdays during term). Not a children’s show! (Age guidance: over 12.) Two new vintages from Maud Heath Vineyard The end of July signalled the release of two new vintages at Maud Heath Vineyard, both of which were nil dosage, meaning the wines required no added sugar since the grapes were harvested at optimum ripeness, with a sufficient balance of acidity. The ‘Tytherton Red’ is a wine predominantly consisting of Pinot Noir grapes, which has been lightly oaked in barrels for six months. It has aromas of cassis and plum on the nose, with a medium bodied palate, and a soft silky texture accompanied by a lasting finish. This red is the first to be produced by Maud Heath, it is expected to get better with age. 2014 was an incredible year for English wine production, whilst Italy and France struggled to harvest vast amounts of grapes, English vineyards thrived due to a spectacular summer that provided ideal growing conditions for a plentiful harvest. Maud Heath Vineyard has produced another ‘Bacchus White’, following a popular 2013 vintage. The nose has fresh, tropical fruit aromas, with a crisp, dry palate displaying green apple, and elderflower flavours. The finish is long, elegant, and refreshing.

Chris had heard of John Williams Heating Services, based in Chippenham, and handed in his CV in person. “The company has such a good reputation, and it’s family run which is what I am used to and I enjoy this kind of environment. I was thrilled to be interviewed and then offered a job,” Chris said. Chris will join a team of 13 engineers which includes three apprentices. He lives in Chippenham with Linda, his wife of 43 years and they have a daughter Jane and three grandchildren. In his spare time, Chris enjoys fishing and participates in competitive matches at Ivy House Lakes, Grittenham. John Williams Heating Services is based on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate in Chippenham and is now in its 11th year of business. This year, it was named Apprentice Employer of the Year in the Wiltshire Business Awards. It’s also a Which? Trusted Trader and is registered with CheckATrade.com.

Swimming for Charity Mark Rickaby, director of Wiltshire accountancy firm Sunflower Accounts Ltd, set himself a challenge – to swim a long distance in the sea to raise money for charity. The 38-year-old father from Calne, has an incurable condition Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) which affects the lower back and can lead to fusing of the bones of the spine. It’s estimated about 200,000 people in the UK have AS and the average age at which symptoms occur is 24. It’s often called arthritis of the spine. A national charity, founded in Bath, NASS (National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society) supports people like him but receives little funding for its research. Mark decided to make a contribution and aimed to raise £250 from his swim of almost 3km. Thanks to the support of friends, family and members of the Wiltshire business community, he more than doubled his target. As co-founder of Sunflower Accounts with his wife Steph, the couple have pledged to raise funds for NASS throughout 2015. Mark’s swim took place in Cornwall last month. Mark said: “I’m overwhelmed by the support shown to me in this very personal challenge I set myself. Money is still coming in. To date, I’ve raised more than £600 which is just amazing. I’d like to thank everyone who has made a contribution.”

Pension Scams by Tim Collyer

C

ITIZENS ADVICE supplies the face to face element of the Government’s Pension Wise guidance service. Now, four months on since ‘Pension Freedoms’ were introduced, data published showed that one in ten of their staff saw people who had responded to or fallen prey to a scam. A further third thought scams targeting ‘over 55s’ had increased and two in five had seen people targeted repeatedly. Three scams that are cropping up frequently are: • Unspecified financial products – fraudsters gain access to underlying investments and offer a high rate of return. • Free pension reviews – people are texted or cold called with offers of a free pension review and are asked to sign paperwork. • Investments for pension cash – people are approached with investment offers such as overseas property and fine wines. It appears that in each case, asking relevant questions had the

potential to reveal inconsistencies in what was being offered. But there are things you can look out for which may indicate a scam: • Pension help for free – an offer of help with your pension, such as free review or help tracing a lost pension. • High rates of return – any promotion offering you a much higher rate of return than other investors. • Time pressure – if you are told you must give your details within a short time frame or sign paperwork from a courier. • Early access – an offer to help you access your pension before the age of 55. To help avoid being scammed: • Never be rushed into making a decision. • Check the company contacting you is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or The Pensions Regulator. • If unsure, contact The Pensions Advisory Service on 0300 123 1047 or contact Citizens Advice on 03454 04 05 06

• Look at the FCA’s Scamsmart warning list, which lists known scams – www.fca.org.uk/ scamsmart • If you have already accepted an offer you think is a scam, report it to Action Fraud For further information on pension scams, visit www. pensionwise.gov.uk For answers to your pension questions, please email me at: tim.collyer@ alexanderhousefs. co.uk or call 07958 777924 or 0800 3161811. Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s proposed new base WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) held a public consultation event yesterday (Wednesday August 12th) for local residents and businesses to find out about its proposed new home to base the charity’s helicopter, aircrew and office staff. The charity has been searching for a site for its new home for over a year and its preferred location is on land at Outmarsh Farm, Semington, (immediately south of Hampton Park West Industrial Estate). The 12.6 acre site is centrally located which would enable the helicopter to reach all parts of Wiltshire within 11 minutes. As Melksham does not have an ambulance station, the charity believes that WAA would provide enhanced medical cover for the area. WAA’s Critical Care Paramedics have advanced medical skills and as well as responding in the helicopter, they use a Rapid Response Vehicle (car) to attend medical emergencies including road traffic collisions, heart attacks and strokes.

“The charity’s new home would cost in the region of £3 million to build and equip. A private benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has agreed to fund 75% of this amount to pay for the building cost, which we are extremely grateful for. We will need to raise the remainder, amounting to some £750,000, to fit out and equip the building. In time, we will launch a Capital Appeal to raise this money as we want the people of Wiltshire to feel very much involved in our new home project,” said David Philpott WAA Chief Executive. Currently the helicopter and aircrew are based at a hangar at Wiltshire Police Headquarters in Devizes, while the charity team is based at offices at Porte Marsh Industrial Estate, Calne. The lease on the hangar runs out on December 31 2017 and the lease on the offices runs out at the end of January 2018. The benefit of owning its own land would mean the charity has full control of its future and not subject to the uncertainty that renting can bring. If you would like to support the work of WAA by making a donation or volunteering your time visit: www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

GRITTLETON VILLAGE HALL WITH RURAL ARTS WILTSHIRE presents

At the public consultation event, held at Trowbridge Rugby Club, people had the opportunity to talk with the project team and architects and give their feedback to the proposals. A total of 125 people attended. Mandy Clarke, Chairman of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We would like to thank everyone who attended our public consultation event to find out about our new home plans. The feedback we receive is really important to us as want to work in partnership with local people, be good neighbours and develop plans that people of Wiltshire can be proud of.” All the information from the public consultation event is on the charity’s website www.wiltshireairambulance. co.uk/who-we-are/about-us/new-home and people can send in their feedback until 28 August 2015. After the charity has assessed the feedback it receives, it anticipates submitting an outline planning application for the site in late Autumn 2015.

Harvest Time The Importance of Bread

W

E HAVE CELEBRATED a successful harvest since pagan times in Britain. Today events are commonly held in September or October on the Sunday when there is a full moon closest to the Autumn Equinox (September 23rd). Prior to King Henry VIII’s break away from the Catholic Church however, celebrations took place on August 1st at the start of the Harvest season. The day was known as Lammas or ‘loaf mass’, and marked the wheat harvest specifically with celebrations on 30

later days to honour fruit crops. On Lammas it was customary for farmers to make a loaf from the new crop and take it to church. Stories of tradition then vary, with some sources saying the blessed loaf would be used for communion during a special mass thanking God for the harvest. Others say the loaf was split into four pieces and placed in the corners of the barn to protect the grain that had been gathered. Frequently celebrations in schools and churches include hymns such as We Plough the Fields And

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

Scatter, and All Things Bright and Beautiful. Decorations such as corn dollies and the display of home grown produce are set out. This format is thought to emanate from when the Revered Robert Hawker invited parishioners to harvest celebrations in Morwenstow in Cornwall in 1843. Whether you celebrate formally or not it’s a great time of year to enjoy the foods of the season, especially bread.

Health Matters

Flu Fighters by Emmy Butcher

M

Y MUM used to say to me that if I sat too close to the television I would get square eyes. This is a funny expression but now I’m older I think I know what she means. Our lives nowadays are pretty much ruled by screens not just TVs but tablets, computer screens and phones. I don’t know about you but I particularly waste a lot of time staring at my phone. My work life and social calendar is mostly organised through the use of my phone and I text my friends and my family and keep in regular contact with relatives living on distant plains through e-mail. Facebook, Twitter, Google, online shopping, news feeds and watching cats do something stupid on Youtube, these are the things that keep me busy. Sometimes looking up from the screen I

have to blink a couple of times for real life to come into focus. Digital media is such a part of our lives nowadays that it is pretty much unavoidable to get ‘square eyes’. Admittedly it is a good way of keeping up to date with what is going on in the world and is sometimes very useful. We have a new IT Apprentice here at the Surgery called Jack and through his enthusiastic influence Beversbrook Medical Centre has joined the ranks of social media and now has a Facebook page. You can ‘Like’ our Facebook page by visiting www.facebook.com/ beversbrook and keep up to date with news from the Surgery. However, I have to admit I do waste a lot of time looking at screens of one kind or another and sometimes I feel it could be better spent doing something less boring instead. There are a whole host of things I complain that I never have the time to do like read a book, visit friends or get my flu jab. Yes, that’s right – getting my flu jab, which is not, despite what you may have heard, a complete waste of time.

Regular readers will recall how much of a big baby I am about getting my flu vaccination. I hate needles and it normally takes quite a bit of cajoling, bullying and bribery to get me to have my jab. I was therefore, as you can imagine, dismayed to read on Twitter that the flu jab ‘didn’t work’ last year and that it was all for naught. But we all know you can’t believe everything you read on social media and in actual fact the flu jab was not then, nor is it now, a complete waste of time. So what went wrong? Well, there are many strains of the influenza virus and each one can mutate creating a new strain, when this happens it takes time to develop and produce vaccines to help fight them. The World Health Organization, (WHO) makes the decision, based on global research and surveillance, as to what strains the flu vaccine should cover and last year they decided on three varieties – these were Swine Flu, Influenza A (H3N2) and Influenza B. Because of the large undertaking involved in developing the vaccines, manufacturing and distributing them the decision by WHO has to be made well in advance of the flu season. In March a new strain of Influenza A (H3N2) had been discovered but it was by then too late to change the production of the vaccine. If you did get flu last year, it was likely because of this A (H3N2) strain, as the flu vaccine provided only 3% protection against this. However, your vaccine did protect you against the two other main flu strains, so to have it was not a complete waste of time after all. As you can imagine, these things are hard to predict and last year

32

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

influenza didn’t play fair, and why should it? It’s a war and flu wants to win. A WHO meeting was held in February this year and new battle strategies developed to make sure the fight goes on. You may convince yourself that you don’t have time to have your flu jab, but that would be deserting the cause. Why give flu the fighting chance? You are especially at risk if you are aged over 65, if you are pregnant, if you have a weakened immune system or if you have an underlying health condition. Young children are also at risk of developing serious complications from contracting the flu.

CK CLINIC

The war against influenza needs you so if you are called in for a flu vaccination this year please do accept the invitation with good grace - you could even broadcast your bravery on social media and start a new trend! Move over Ice Bucket Challenge, it’s time to roll up your sleeves for the Flu Fighters.

CK CLINIC

Sadly, they have not yet developed a vaccination for square eyes, apparently there is no cure. Stay away it might be catching – best to e-mail me or send me an SMS, message me on Faceboook or…… oh help it’s reached fever stage!

Our faces, like our bodies, come in all shapes and sizes, so if you wear glasses it’s important to choose a pair that will establish a balanced look. The four most common face shapes are oval, round, square and oblong. If you have an oval shaped face with a rounded chin and forehead, consider yourself lucky! You’ll look good in almost anything, but make sure you select a frame that is wide enough to maintain balance. A round face needs to look narrower and longer, which can be achieved with soft but angular frames that are not too deep. Geometric shapes and ones with embellished arms also give the face more definition. If your face is square with a broad forehead, wide jaw and square chin, soften the angles by wearing oval or round frames that are not too wide. These will soften the jaw and help emphasise the eyes. A rectangular face is longer with a square chin, deep forehead, high cheekbones and long nose. Large, wide, square frames with a strong top line help shorten the face, and a low bridge will shorten the nose. In addition, ensure that the top edge of the frame is no higher than the eyebrows and that the lower edge does not sit on the cheekbones.

Reflexologist stops by to help busy mums Reflexologist Gabriela Slater joined parents and carers at a local toddler group in Derry Hill to offer them mini reflexology sessions in return for donating to the group’s funds. Gabriela, who has been running her business NuReflexology since 2011, visited Derry Tots Playgroup in Derry Hill and offered hand reflexology sessions to parents. Half of all money raised was given back to the group to fund activities for children. “Mums never have enough time to take time out and do something relaxing, I thought that these mini reflexology sessions would help them slow down for a minute and enjoy the treatment” said Gabriela. Gabriela set up NuReflexology in Chippenham after receiving life changing help herself when her own daughters were toddlers. “As a mother of two very small children, I found I was suffering from stress, insomnia and was constantly feeling tired. I followed a course of treatment from a reflexologist and it changed everything. I felt more energised and more able to cope.” Derry Tots is a community playgroup offering activities each week as well as providing an opportunity for parents and carers to socialise. Rachel CasseyHolland, who is co-chair of the group, said: “Gabriela approached me with an idea of periodically running mini hand reflexology clinics during our village toddler group sessions. I thought it was a fabulous idea because I’m a tired mum to three boys under the age of five and even just ten minutes of pampering sounded like heaven. Everyone who had a session with Gabriela was raving about it afterwards.” For more information about NuReflexology visit: www.nureflexology.co.uk.

ROALD DAHL DAY Roald Dahl Day is celebrated on September 13th to mark the birth of one of Britain’s most famous children’s writers. Dahl was born in Llandaff near Cardiff in 1916. The son of Norwegian parents, he was named after Roald Amunsden, a polar explorer from Norway. It is humour and captivating characters that make Dahl one of the most popular British authors ever. Many of the characters and story lines in his books are based on his own life experiences. For example he was caned as a child for putting a mouse in a jar of gobstoppers in a sweet shop and later wrote Everlasting Gobstoppers. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory his third book stems from his days at Repton School where the boys were often asked to test new chocolates from the Cadbury factory. It is said he dreamed of inventing a chocolate that would impress Mr Cadbury. When he left school Dahl worked for Shell until in 1939 he entered the RAF. He took part in several significant World War II air battles, and later worked for the British Embassy in Washington. Many of his stories have links to aviation. His first book The Gremlins which was published in 1942, is based on mischievous creatures who were part of RAF folklore. He left the service in 1946 having obtained the rank of Squadron Leader. Dahl’s children’s books are told from the child’s point of view and usually include an adult villain who hates or mistreats children. It is thought that this is a link back to his own unhappy days at boarding school. Frequently his books feature ‘fat’ characters too, black humour and grotesque scenarios. In addition to his children’s books Dahl also wrote children’s poetry, and it is often forgotten that he wrote adult fiction too. Some of his short stories were the base for the popular television series Tales of the Unexpected. It will always be his children’s books that he is most famous for. Year after year children dress as his characters for world book day, and teachers plan lessons around his stories because of their popularity. Reading remains so important for building children’s vocabulary, and for helping to stimulate their imagination and literacy skills. Dahl’s books are often the books adults recount as their favourites while growing-up, or the stories that really captivated them and got them into the reading habit. A variety of awards and commemorations have been set up since Dahl’s death in 1990, and new readers continue to discover his books through new creations such as the Scratch ‘n’ Sniff version of The Twits which was released in June 2015.

From Crinoids to Cricket by William Hulbert

M

Y RECORD OF appearing in every Chippenham School under 15 cricket match during the summer of 1967 looked to be in serious doubt. The reason or reasons stood ten feet below me in the guise of some inquisitive and rather frisky bullocks. As I gazed down from the branches of the tree in which I had sought a hasty refuge, I summed up my or rather our options. I had been accompanied by my mate who was due to score for our unbeaten side later that Saturday afternoon. We had cycled the three miles or so from Chippenham to the grandly named Holywell. It was a journey I had made at least annually from the time my parents had first brought me to what appeared to be a magical spot to any six year old. The ‘well’ itself was not really a well just a stone ornament marking this rather special spot in the middle of a field between Chippenham and Corsham. Possibly, it had once been much grander, but for now it stood in the shadow of our tree of refuge, looking rather sorry for itself. Sadly, today it looks even blander without its accompanying stone.

gravel-like substance in search of a star stone. In those days it did not take long to fall upon a star and several scoops would usually reveal enough star stones to place into a matchbox that would be safely pocketed for the journey back to Chippenham.

To a young boy these stones really were a magical treasure, to a teenager they held less awe but in the days before computers, walkmans, iPods etcetera it was a source of enjoyment and amusement to cycle forth and still be able to find these tiny treasures. It was several years later that I discovered what ‘my star shaped fossils’ actually were. The stars are or were part of an animal called crinoids. The stars are from the creature’s long stem and date back to the Cambrian period and

The grandeur of its name was due to the rather special ‘stones’, star stones we called them, that lay amongst the silt of the unimpressive looking stream that meandered across the field before disappearing underground at the aforesaid monument. The usual method was to scoop a small amount of silt using a hand trowel onto a palm, and then use a finger to search through the 40

vary in size from around one to three millimetres. Crinoids were relatives of the star-fish, sea-urchin and sea-cucumber. They are associated with areas of limestone and a few species still exist today in tropical seas. Holywell is situated in a field between Sheldon Corner (half a mile beyond Chippenham Rugby club) and the Bath Road (heading towards Corsham). It is farmland and visitors should heed the countryside code/law. Holywell perhaps derives its name from pagan and early Christian times when such wells were used for baptisms by members of the travelling community who were unable to attend a regular church, so baptism in a holy well was the next best thing. When I became a parent I duly showed my children this ‘Holywell’ and twenty years or so later my youngest son still has his collection in a matchbox! As for 1967 … being headstrong and fit teenagers my friend and I, finally jumped from the tree and outran the bullocks to reach our bicycles at the roadside, and yes we made it back for the match which was duly won!

Heroic effort by local volunteers sees 220 year old culvert rebuilt

FTER NEARLY A YEAR of working in all weathers, from frost and wild winds, to torrential downpours and heatwaves, volunteers with the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust finally completed a mammoth rebuilding project in June at Pewsham Locks near Chippenham.

“Many of our volunteers are not professional bricklayers: they have enjoyed learning new skills and the culvert is now quite a stunning structure complete with over 8,000 bricks. Unfortunately, once finished, it will be completely hidden under the canal, so we want to show it off while we can!

A 30 metre long, 220 year old brick culvert, which collapsed during the record-breaking wet winter of 2013-14, has been rebuilt after a herculean effort by a team of workers, who worked weekends and mid-week, clocking up an amazing total of over 2,000 voluntary hours during the project.

“The fantastic donation of £10,000 from the Yorkshire Building Society, which we received last December, inspired members to redouble their efforts, and they worked heroically until the structure was finally completed this June. We are now looking forward to using our newly acquired skills on rebuilding the locks.”

Basil Raddy, a volunteer with the Trust, who has been involved from the start, said: “I have been keeping a record of the hours worked, and by my calculations, the actual rebuild has taken 1,656 hours. But when you add in the time clearing out the silt and bricks, diverting the towpath, pumping out the water, and cleaning the original bricks, I would estimate over 2,000 hours is near the mark.”

On 3rd July, Bristol manager of the Yorkshire Building Society Lee Hathaway, was invited to ceremonially lay the final inscribed brick, as an acknowledgement of the importance of the YBS funding in securing materials and hiring machinery. Roderick Bluh (newly appointed Wilts & Berks Canal Trust Chairman), Councillor David Powell (Mayor of Chippenham), and Michelle Donelan (MP for Chippenham) also attended the ceremony, applauding the volunteers for their fantastic efforts, and admiring the new structure before it is finally reburied.

The historic structure was originally constructed between 1795 and 1799, to cross underneath the canal, and was effectively an underground tunnel to carry the small stream Cocklemore Brook. In January 2014, that stream became a torrent, and the destructive power of the water collapsed the arched culvert, creating a huge hole in the towpath and canal bank, allowing all the water from that section of the restored canal to drain out. Ray Canter, project leader, said: “It has been a massive challenge. We couldn’t even start on the rebuilding for eight months, as it took that long for the water in Cocklemore Brook to lower sufficiently. Even then, volunteers had to don waders and work up to their chests in water and mud. Luckily, this last winter was not so wet, and by using three 4" pumps, we were able to clear all the debris and begin the rebuilding. We had to construct bunds (dams) on either side of the culvert, divert the towpath, and excavate the whole canal bed; it certainly gave us an enormous respect for the original builders who did not have the benefit of excavators and dumpers. 42

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

The culvert itself will soon be lost again to view when the temporary bunds (or dams) are removed, the canal bed restored, and the canal below Pewsham waiting wharf will then be returned to its former glory. The aim of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is to restore the former waterway from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting Chippenham, Calne, Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon. New members and volunteers are always welcome; see more information on the websites: www.melkshamwaterway.org.uk and www.wbct.org.uk Left: Volunteers Ray Canter and Basil Raddy stand proudly on top of the completed culvert. The Wiltshire Home Guard by Maria Ogbourne

T

HE 75th ANNIVERSARY of the formation of the Home Guard occurred on 14 May 2015. The threat of invasion was very real on 14 May 1940, when men aged 17 to 65 not in military service were asked to enrol as Local Defence Volunteers to protect their country. They were renamed Home Guard in July 1940. The Wiltshire Home Guard (WHG) comprised 13 general service battalions, an antiaircraft battery and a motorised transport company. At least 23,500 men volunteered in the WHG. The Home Guard was disbanded on 31 December 1945 after being stood down on 3 December 1944.

The WHG re-enactment group aim to portray the activities of the Home Guard and life on the Home Front. Set up to enable all family members to join, we currently have 28 members from across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset, and are always on the lookout for new members.

The WHG was set up to defend towns, villages and strategic locations. They undertook a variety of training including drill, weapons familiarisation and use, unarmed combat, methods for disrupting the enemy, and in some areas of Wiltshire bomb disposal. At events, we have drill sessions with the public being encouraged to take part, a village defence briefing where the methods of defence are explained including disrupting the enemy with caltrops, fake anti-tank mines and petrol bombs, and how to make use of captured weapons and ammunition. We also guard a UXB and demonstrate how it was made safe, and have a range of weapons and militaria on display. Where possible, a patrol will search out German infiltrators. Most activities are practiced at meetings held out of season. We even have a shooting competition, just like the Home Guard!

Home Front consists of several static displays including 1940s home complete with period pram, police station, ARP station, WVS collection point, and a period toy store. Land girls and a war correspondent are also attached to the unit. The public are encouraged to get close to the exhibits and ask lots of questions. Fundraising for military charities is achieved with collection tins and by selling pictorial items.

If we’ve whetted your appetite, visit our website www.wiltshirehomeguard.co.uk where you will find a lot more information, including details of our own show at Bratton in September.

Cherhill’s History in Stitches When next entering Cherhill Village Hall take a close look at the two embroideries hanging on the wall in front of you. Now positioned at eye level between the two windows it is so much easier to see the craftsmanship that has gone into these Millennium pieces, crafted 15 years ago by 15 members of the Cherhill WI. Look carefully and you will see different scenes depicting Cherhill over the last 1000 years, together with mentions of modern day organisations that still use the hall regularly. The information alongside them gives extra detail on each depiction of life in this Wiltshire village. This project, which took two years to complete, was part of ‘The National Needlework Record’ which archives and centralises information about needlework in the community, and ‘Stitch 2000’, a unique research study, and was recognised as a major contribution to our national heritage. Records show that the Cherhill WI strictly adhered to all the criteria requested and that much work went into the initial planning of the two pictures. There is interesting evidence of trial embroidery, choices of colours used and of course the subject matter that had to be carefully researched and then turned into easily understood depictions. Local hostelries; businesses; flora and fauna; leisure activities, geographic location of the village and past history from the Romans to Tudors and our famous White Horse and Downs. Take time to examine them when next in the Village Hall and feel part of the ongoing history of this village. If anyone would like to discuss this historic project further please do contact a WI Committee Member.

Autumn Gardening by Rachel Leverton

S

EPTEMBER 23rd is a special date in the gardening calendar. The sun is directly above the earth’s equator and day and night are exactly the same length.

chock-full of Spring bulbs already but I can always find room for some more. While I’m at it I’ll be planting a few in pots so I can be sure of a great spring display on the patio.

Because of this, September is a pivotal month in the year: it heralds the end of summer and the start of autumn. It’s also a pivotal month in the garden. It’s a time of endings but also a time for rejuvenation. Summer plants fade and enter their dormant period, while leaves take on autumn hues: yet autumn crocuses push up through the soil, while bushes and trees are laden with fruit.

Meanwhile I look upon all the weeding, tidying and leaf-raking that I’m doing as an investment in compostable materials for my bin and my leaf-litter pile, which when left over the winter transmogrify into rich, crumbly compost and leaf-mould respectively. When dug into my soil in early spring it will give my garden a much needed shot of energy with which to kick off the growing season.

This dual aspect to September means that on the one hand I find myself preparing my garden for its long winter sleep, but on the other I’m planning ahead for next spring. So, while cutting down the perennials which have finished flowering I’m also checking to see if any have become too big for the space they’re in. If they have, I’ll divide them now, while the soil is still warm, and move them to another part of the garden, where they’ll flourish when the new growing season begins next year.

The autumn equinox is the gardener’s equivalent of the New Year. It’s a time to reflect on the past season while resolving to do even better in 2016.

AUTUMN LAWN CARE Sweep the leaves. I put mine in a perforated dustbin liner, in a dry spot and wait for them to rot down. Rake Use a wire rake to pull out all the dead moss and thatch. I put everything I collect into the compost bin Spike lawn Push a garden fork right through the lawn into the earth below then rock it a little to open up the lawn’s surface and allow air in. Brush with top dressing This is available from garden centres. Brush it into the holes with a stiff broom. To make your own top dressing, mix 3 parts top soil with one part peat substitute and 6 parts sharp sand.

Likewise, I’m planning where any new trees or shrubs will go. I’ll get them in during September and they’ll be off to a flying start come Spring. My garden is The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

Reinvent Yourself! How to change for the better this school year

G

ROWING UP, I lived within throwing distance of the local primary school, yet every morning I arrived late and was greeted with a chant from other children: “You’re late, you’re late, your dinner’s on your plate!” I hated being singled out in this way and it has taken me years to shake off the ‘late’ label. I’m sure I’m not the only child to be labelled for a particular habit or behaviour. For others it might be “lazy”, “quiet”, “disruptive”, “noisy” or “disorganised”. But whatever the past may have held, the start of a new school year brings with it a clean slate and the chance to start anew. Defeat and discouragement should be left where they belong – in the past – while children take the chance to reinvent themselves and work towards a brighter future. Education experts say that getting a new school year off to a good start can influence a child’s attitude, confidence and performance both socially and

56

academically. So how do we give our children the best chance of making a positive new start? First and foremost, our children need to want to change for the better and adopt the right attitude for achieving this. They need to accept responsibility for their own conduct and make a commitment to change. For example, they might decide to be punctual or polite or to get their homework done on time. As parents we can help by being positive and encouraging. Our children need to arrive at school properly prepared. Having the correct equipment such as pens, pencils, rulers, rubber and reading diary are all important, but so are getting enough sleep and having a decent breakfast at the start of the day. It’s been proven that adequate sleep, food and water all aid concentration. Some food and drink, however, is counterproductive. Foods high in sugar and caffeine can cause

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

hyperactivity, so choose carefully what to eat at lunchtime to avoid a negative impact on their afternoon lessons! Though ultimately a child is responsible for their own behaviour and performance, parents do have their part to play. Take an interest in what they are doing, ask them about their day when they get home and become involved in school life when you can. Children are our real-life mirrors; they tend to imitate what they see. If they see that they are important to you and that school is important to you, they’ll take it much more seriously and be more responsible. The start of a new school year should be exciting, a time of celebration, a time to look forward, not back. Good luck as you and your child embark on a future of new possibilities!

As parents, we have survived the horrors of a crowded shoe shop where every member of staff is being hounded by at least 5 customers, all desperate to achieve the goal of pay and escape. When we have footed the bill (no pun intended) it is common to find that those great priced trousers at Tesco are too wide/narrow/long/short for your inconveniently non average child and wide eyed with panic you have to search for a different fit that costs you triple the price of the supermarket version and half a tank of petrol doing the ‘other shop’ tour. Learn to play a Musical Instrument by Debbie Singh-Bhatti

M

USIC IS AN IMPORTANT part of life – nearly everyone enjoys listening to it. Yet relatively few of us have the ability to create it.

Scientists say that children who play an instrument do better academically than those who don’t. It can benefit their reading age because it enhances comprehension skills. Learning to understand beat, rhythm and scales improves their maths skills as children learn how to divide, create fractions and recognise patterns. Listening to pitch, rhythm and tempo helps to sharpen their concentration and using mnemonic devices to learn musical patterns can improve memory. Co-ordination and motor skills are also developed as a child learns to convert written notes to movement of hands, arms and feet. This improved co-ordination and timing can benefit children in other hobbies such as dance and sports. Children who learn as part of a group cultivate social skills as they interact with other class members. They learn to wait patiently for their turn, and show respect for others. It’s also a chance to make friends, especially if they play in a band or orchestra. Mastering an instrument and achieving goals takes months or even years. Perseverance and patience are useful qualities developed along the way, as is self-confidence which grows further if they go on to perform in public.

58

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

Caring for their instrument teaches a child responsibility, while managing their time to ensure that practice is done regularly helps them develop organisational skills. Finally, learning about and playing a musical instrument can help children discover the role of music in other cultures, and this familiarity from an early age helps foster open-mindedness about worlds and traditions beyond the ones they know. If your child shows an interest in learning an instrument, be sure to choose one that excites them (my daughter was horrified to be presented with a cello when what she coveted was a clarinet). Select an instrument that suits their ability and temperament, and make sure it produces a sound that you can tolerate for hours as you listen to them practice (I have memories of my mum banishing me to the furthest corner of the house because she couldn’t bear the sound of me screeching on the violin!). I was nine when my parents found me a piano teacher, and even though the road has not always been smooth, I am forever grateful to them for taking this decision, as I consider myself amongst the privileged few who have had the opportunity to learn an instrument and enjoy the benefits this brings.

Back to School

Back to School (again!) by Angie Jones-Moore

I

N AUGUST WHEN THE ACADEMIC summer holidays are in full swing; everywhere I turn I see ‘Back to School’ ‘Essential Back to School Sale’ blazoned across shop windows. The majority of parents and children’s minds are consumed with the thought of fast approaching September. Returning to school involves a great deal of organisation, especially if your child is one of the year six primary school pupils across the County, making the transition to being a year seven student and embarking on their secondary education; my eldest daughter being one of them. We are spoilt for choice, with many excellent secondary schools to choose from in our part of Wiltshire, each offering a wealth of opportunities to their students. Moving to secondary school is leaps and bounds away from the comfort of the primary school that the children have become familiar with over previous years. The primary schools have excellent, well thought out methods for equipping the children for their transition; offering numerous opportunities to visit the schools during their final year. The prospect of joining the larger secondary schools certainly can be overwhelming, making the move from being a big fish in a little pond to a small fish in a really rather large lake! Independence begins to flourish and maturity starts to show, with the next generation of pupils making preparations for the move to ‘big school’. There are the early morning starts to consider, the possibility of walking to school with friends and the newly found freedom with less parental intervention. The children have new systems and routines to learn and adapt to, the timetable to remember and making sure they attend their lessons independently and on time. Different teachers for individual subjects and an array of educational opportunities to become accustomed to are but a few of the changes the pupils can expect. As a family we have been regularly involved with the new secondary school my daughter will be attending; opportunities of several open evenings, including transition days, questions answered by the staff in the school office and all round fantastic support from the school we were soon to be part of. The year six children have been brimming with excitement, younger siblings wanting to go with their older 60

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

brothers and sisters, even the parents have even made comments that they would like to go back to school too! I have been gathering together the uniform required for several weeks, to ensure my daughter has all of the items required. At first sight the list of garments and items was really quite overwhelming, however after taking the time to peruse it in detail I found the list not to be as daunting as I had first thought. The local uniform suppliers and the schools themselves are very well equipped for dealing with us first time secondary parents. In fact the extremely helpful staff knew what I needed without me having to quote my list! The supply is a concern for all parents, the children all starting together and all being a similar size, will they have enough? What if they sell out? Will my child be the only one without? My fears were unfounded when the school provided me with everything in a matter of minutes, what a service and a reassurance for all. My daughter is equipped and prepared for the next influential step in her education, I hope this transition will be a positive experience for us all.

New Tamarin Arrival I

T has been fourteen years since Cotton-top Tamarins produced young at the Burford collection, so keepers were thrilled when their newest Tamarin female gave birth to twins. The striking infants were born to first-time parents and have been named Tilly and Tammy.

Cotton-top Tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) are considered to be one of the world’s 25 most endangered primates* and are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), making them one of South America’s rarest Monkeys. Rampant deforestation and gold mining has destroyed an estimated 95 per cent of their natural habitat. In the wild, these exceptionally rare creatures are restricted to a tiny corner of north-west Colombia. Approximately 6,000 individuals remain in the wild – a devastatingly low figure, considering their numbers once ranged between 20,000 and 30,000 in the 1960s and 1970s. New father Johnny is an important individual for the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) as he has an impressively pure bloodline, so these new births are considered significant additions to the EEP, helping to ensure the genetic diversity of this rare and wonderful species. Curator of Cotswold Wildlife Park, Jamie Craig, said: “This is the first time we have bred this species for many years and the keepers are delighted at the progress of the youngsters so far. Together with the rapidly growing Emperor Tamarin babies, it certainly is an exciting time for the Primate section!” Each member of the family plays a specific role when it comes to rearing the young. The dominant male spends the most time carrying the infants – the mother carries them for the first week of life then holds them only to suckle. Females are pregnant for six months and the babies weigh about 15 per cent of their mother’s body weight, which is equivalent to a nine-stone woman giving birth to two ten-pound babies. They are not the only Tamarin births being celebrated this summer. Emperor Tamarin twins were born on 4th May (one pictured left). The sexes of the newborns are unknown at the moment, so they are yet to be named. Cotton-top and Emperor Tamarins (Saguinus imperator) are New World Monkeys and are members of the Callitrichidae family. Both are visually striking and easily identified. The Cotton-top Tamarins boast a 62

fantastic crest of long white hair, like a mane of white cotton, whereas the Emperor Tamarins are famous for their elegant white moustaches. Visitors can see all four newborns at the Park. Their enclosures are opposite the entrance to interactive Lemur exhibit Madagascar. The Emperor Tamarins share their exhibit with Titi Monkeys and the smallest Monkey species on earth – the Pygmy Marmoset. Photos: Cotswold Wildlife Park

ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION: Up to 40,000 Cotton-to p Tamarins were caught and exported for use in biomedical research bef ore 1976 (when they were giv en the highest level of protection and all interna tional trade was banned ). Cotton-top Tamarins hav e more than 40 vocalisations used to com municate everything fro m the discovery of food to the approach of predat ors. The white fur on their hea d can be raised and lowered, creating a strikin g punk-like fan display. Tongue-flicking or “tongu ing” is a unique Tamarin behaviour used in many contexts, including aggression and mating. The Emperor Tamarin orig inates from western Bra zil and eastern Peru. Cotswold Wildlife Park opens its doors at 10am every day (except Christ mas Day), with last admission at 4.30pm (3. 30pm in the winter months). Motoring Mayhem

Cars and Bikes (lots) by Colin Viner

A couple of weeks later the Atwell Wilson Motor Museum in Calne held its annual rally. I hadn’t been to one before despite it being only 10 minutes walk away so this year I made a point of going. I have to say it was very good; two fields full of classic and vintage cars and the museum as well all for eight quid.

Y

OU WOULD THINK that after 52 years in the motor trade I would have had enough of cars, but when you think that I was wheeled to my dad’s garage in my pram in 1950, started working there in 1962 during school holidays and am still there I suppose you could say cars are in my blood. True there are now days I would rather be doing something else but I still enjoy being around cars especially at shows and racing circuits. When we were away in June I had a text from my stepson to tell me he had free tickets for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The problem was that we weren’t due to get home from holiday until the early hours of Friday the 26th of June and the tickets were for the same day. Tickets for Goodwood are expensive, so not wishing to pass up the opportunity to go for free, after 4 hours in bed I was up; not necessarily raring but ready to go. Goodwood is a big show and previous times I have been we had to leave home by 6am to get there early enough to see all the show. As it was we left at 8 and arrived about 11am which as it turned out was adequate time to see plenty of action. 66

My stepson Des runs Veneno Racing, a karting school for junior drivers and the tickets for Goodwood had been supplied by Grant Cane, father of 14 year old Jordan Cane a former pupil of Des’s karting school and now the world’s youngest single seat open wheel racing driver. On arrival the first thing we did was to visit the Jordan Cane Racing marquee to thank them for the tickets. Young Jordan was there and invited me to have a go on his rather expensive race simulator. It can be programmed to simulate racing at every circuit in the world and it comes complete with proper driving experience and F1 style steering wheel. To me the only thing it lacked was the feeling of speed and braking and although I consider myself to be a reasonable driver I crashed everywhere. Then Jordan took over and turned in lap after seamless lap. Grrr. All of Jordan’s racing takes place in the USA in the F1600 Championship series racing for Team Palfrey and he has to juggle school with fortnightly visits to take part. It is tough to make it to the top in car racing but he seems to have the talent and certainly has the backing of his family; we may yet see him in F1.

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

I am always amazed by the workmanship on the restored cars; I’m sure some of them are better than new. I was especially drawn to some of the cars either my dad had owned, such as the Jaguar MK2, or the cars of the sixties and seventies that I would have driven and worked on in my youth. Considering that all cars prior to the eighties were rot boxes and disintegrated faster than Dracula exposed to daylight it’s amazing that any survive. I spent hours welding large patches in 5 year old cars yet there was a good example of an Austin 1100 and a Vauxhall Viva HB, several Ford Anglias and Minis as well as dozens of other cars that had survived by luck and a lot of hard work by their owners. It was an excellent show and I will try and go again next year. The last show I went to was the Calne Motorcycle Meet. It fell on my birthday so this time I was determined to see the show rather than stand in one spot marshalling. It was a glorious sunny day, loads of bikes booze and bands and despite it following the same routine year after year it never gets stale. There is always some different bike to marvel at such as the Harley with the skull headlight in the picture. R and I spent a good 5 hours in the town and I have to say it was a truly excellent birthday out followed by a scrumptious meal at the Dumpost Inn in the evening. We could have gone to the camping field and listened to more bands but maybe next year.

Books

A Good Read Sponsored by Devizes Books

Cross Stitch Diana Gabaldon

......................................... This engrossing novel is the first in the ‘Outlander’ series and introduces the reader to Claire Randall. It is 1945 and Claire is on a second honeymoon with her husband after being reunited with him following the end of the war. The Scottish Highlands seems idyllic although she accepts that the real reason for the destination is for her husband, Frank to research his family history. Claire visits a stone circle at Craigh na Dun and faints after hearing a strange buzzing noise. When she comes round she finds herself transported back in time to the 18th Century. Not knowing when or if she will ever return to 1945, Claire sets about surviving in an alien culture. She falls for Jamie Fraser, a young Scottish warrior, who is about as different from Frank as you can possibly imagine. She learns of his life and how it crossed paths with Captain Randall: the ancestor that her husband is researching back in 1945. Her heart and passions are divided between Frank in 1945 and the Scotsman she is forced to marry to save her life. Winner of the Romance Writers of America’s award of ‘Best Romance’ when it was first published, the story has recently been adapted for American television and is shown here on Amazon Prime. Gabaldon has created a rich world for her characters

set against the romantic Scottish Highlands. The central characters of Claire and Jamie are complex and they carry the reader through the story. Even the many smaller characters have a voice of their own: from Dougal MacKenzie who leads Jamie’s clan to Geillis Duncan, an unexpected ally for Claire. At 880 pages this may seem like a daunting read, but before you know it, the pages have sped by.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Jeff Kinney

............................................................................................... Of course this month children all over the country said goodbye to the long summer holiday and trudged (many of them reluctantly) back to the classroom. So this month we have a ‘back to school’ theme with the first book in the smash hit US book series. Greg Heffley is finding his way through the minefield that is middle school. As he points out at the start of the book this isn’t really a diary. In his own words there is none of this ‘dear diary’ rubbish and he won’t be discussing his ‘feelings’. It’s a journal, and as a journal it takes us through the school year from the all-important decision of where to sit on the first day of class, to the embarrassment of playing a tree in the school production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (and not even being able to throw apples at annoying Patty who is playing Dorothy!). Along with his best friend, Rowley, he plans a Hallowe’en haunted house to raise some money but unfortunately they only manage one terrified guest before Rowley’s dad brings it to an end. But as we find out, that was not quite the end of the matter and it takes a full school year before the consequences of Hallowe’en night are fully realised. Described as ‘a novel in cartons’ this is a perfect book for both those who love reading and those who are ‘reluctant readers’. Yes, it’s an American book, but there are no issues with readers relating to the culture: school is school, wherever you are in the world!

A trip to the Antiques Roadshow

I

n late June the Antiques Roadshow arrived at Bowood House, and so my father and I (he was acting as a bodyguard) took the Compton Bassett church silver along to it, to find out a little more about it and to get it valued for insurance purposes. Our Treasurer had kindly arranged for the silver to be taken out of the bank and handed it over into my safe, responsible, thoughtful, diligent, care. Yikes! Who says faith and trust are a thing of the past? It did cross my mind that something might happen to it, but God was good and the day passed without serious incident. The afternoon was sunny and we enjoyed coffee and cake at the very busy “Radish” tent, which was a welcome relief after the all the queueing. So then, what happened? I joined a queue. That’s what happens at the Antiques Roadshow. Thankfully though, because the silver was so good, it was only one queue. The silver expert, Alastair Dickenson, was called for, and he came to us. He is a really lovely chap and it was a privilege to have such an expert look at the silver. Isn’t it great being in the presence of somebody who really knows what they are talking about? One of the best reasons for going to church or joining with other Christians in their homes, is that there are opportunities to discover things about the Scriptures and the character of God that we hadn’t previously known. It’s an admission that we don’t have all the answers ourselves, when we meet together. We nearly got on the telly, but the Producer thought against it. Perhaps he thought there was enough silver on that day? What did he say? Apparently, we have a Flagon and a large Paten that belong together of the same period: William III (1700). In the world of Flagons this wasn't early enough to be too special, although the Maundrell family Crest etched onto the front, did make the piece more saleable. The Paten felt a little light to Alastair. He would have expected something of a higher quality to have matched the Flagon. The Paten is inscribed as a gift from Bishop Gilbert of Sarum. I’ve looked him up. Apparently, he was a leading light at the time and is said to have met William of Orange on the beach when he arrived in England. The valuation? £12-15,000, to be insured

70

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

for £20,000. Not bad I thought, considering the expert wasn’t that impressed. Alastair got more excited about the Chalice and smaller Paten that are also a set. The Hallmark dates them to 1638 (Charles I) and because they were plain and didn’t have any religious insignia on them (like a cross?) they were more saleable again. Imagine a piece of silver that was used in a church before the 1662 Book of Common Prayer was even written. The valuation this time? A mere £15-20,000, to be insured for £25,000. Wow, Oh no, I have to take this stuff back without damaging it, I thought. Other items included a Home Communion set, a Mother-of Pearl Baptism scoop and a silver spoon. None of which were worth much at all. The spoon was worth a tenner! So then, what do we do now? Does the Rector go on holiday with the proceeds of an Auction? Unfortunately for him, no. Instead, it all goes back into the bank vault to be kept safe from the hands of those that would steal it. Too valuable to be used for the purpose for which it was intended, not quite valuable enough to be sold to provide a new roof when needed. And my reflection? Partly a sadness that objects without crosses on are more valuable in the eyes of the world than those with them. It’s ironic that the cross, which is of infinite value and worth to every person, should devalue a piece of silver. Then again, I suppose the true cross of Jesus only cost 30 pieces of silver to those who arranged it? But also, on a more positive note, there was a feeling of being impressed by the faith of generations gone by. The silver wasn’t about the ostentatiousness of previous worshippers in Compton Bassett but rather, a genuine, heartfelt expression of the depth of devotion and reverence that the sacraments had in their lives. Those worshippers wanted the very best for God. Perhaps that’s something to inspire us. Can we give our best in terms of time, energy, talents, money and enthusiasm or do we give what we can easily afford? Jo Deacon

Engage brain before opening mouth! More times than not, I open my mouth only to change feet !

I

F – as they say, wisdom is something that comes with age, then I have completely destroyed that myth. Take my prize faux pas of some years ago. I adopted a small and bedraggled black kitten that I fell over one night as it sat shivering and mewing pathetically on the doorstep. An innocent enough gesture you might say. Not when one of Fred's workmates telephoned and I answered the phone. "You haven't seen my little black pussy yet, have you ?" I asked him. (Here I shall draw a veil over his reply!) I vowed there and then to engage my brain before I opened my mouth in future. Needless to say THAT didn't last long! A few months later, while attempting to redecorate the lounge, having got heartily fed up with trying to remove the old wallpaper that the previous tenants appeared to have stuck on with evo-stick, I asked the same bemused friend of my husband if he would fancy coming round to "Help me strip!" AGAIN I exercise my right to delete his comments! (And you lot out there can quit sniggering and making up your own answers!) These days the poor bloke's answer would probably be a snort of derision followed by a hasty, "Not bloody likely!" Me in the nude would frighten the cement out of the bricks these days, and it's all the fault of that malevolent three letter word "AGE"! You go to sleep one night on the eve of your fortieth birthday, with your nipples pointing gallantly towards the ceiling and you wake in the morning to discover they've gone off on a voyage of discovery – under your armpits! (Or should you be lying on your side, you have one in the middle of your 72

chest and the other has completely vanished under your armpit or is snuggled in the crook of your elbow!) And it's all downhill after that. Five years on, suddenly everything decides to go south for the winter – and forgets to head back north in spring. Your nipples are resting gently on your spare tyre, which is overhanging where your belly button used to be – loitering precariously over the top of your pants like the crumbly boulders in the Cheddar Gorge. Your belly button meanwhile is getting up close and personal with your thighs, which in turn are sliding downwards over your knees, leaving wrinkles where once there were cute dimples. And your chin – of which you have more than the Chinese telephone directory, well, let's just say you do not shake your head fast as the turkey wattles take too long to settle down again! By retirement age you feel devastated, but gradually you learn to live with yourself and tell the mirror that your face is a face that has laughed and cried, smiled and known sadness, and is generally the face of an interesting woman who has had a full life. The body however is a different matter. It seems to have mind of its own, and there aint much you can do about it. You can attempt to stay slim, but your skin eventually loses its elasticity and bingo wings become as knotted and gnarled looking as a congealed blancmange someone has trailed a stick through. Of course, you can try to put weight on to avoid the knotted rope look, but once it's on – it won't come off, and if you lay on a beach somewhere, Greenpeace would surely turn up to tow you out to sea !!! I often wonder what will happen to these "so-called" glamour models with their pneumatic bosoms

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2015

when they reach seventy plus! If they haven't had so much plastic surgery by then that they've stood too close to the fire and melted, what about their enormous implants? Never mind being demoralised at being issued their bus pass, they will have to sling their boobs over their shoulders in order to climb the stairs – or risk treading on their own nipples. (And when it comes to stepping onto the vicious metal treads of an elevator – bloody hell, it makes your eyes water at the thought!) So before you young 'uns out there with your body piercings, tattoos, tongue studs and belly-bars laugh derisively at us , shall we just say "A little more mature" ladies, (OK then, grannies if you must) just think what YOU are all going to look like collecting your pensions! (And stop sniggering you cheeky sods. Remember, as I am now – so shall you become too! Unless of course you go too near a car wreckers yard and the crusher magnet picks up on all those studs!!!) Right, back to my "clangers", although they aren't as bad as some I've actually heard from the mouths of other people. Sitting behind two dear old ladies on a bus some years ago, I nearly wet myself trying to stop myself screaming with laughter at their conversation. It seemed the granddaughter of one had moved to America recently, and her reply to the other lady when asked how the young woman was doing went thus :"O she's doing really well, but she's had to store all her lovely furniture and things in one of those suppository things while the decorators get her new condom ready!" I rest my case. Maybe I'm not so bad after all! …… Joanne Deacon @ 2015 ……
