Angels, Shepherds and Wise Men Wanted! Saturday 3rd December 2016 Calne Town Council is delighted to announce that plans are now well underway to enable a Guinness World Records™ title attempt to take place right in the heart of Calne on Saturday 3rd December for The Most Living Figures in a Nativity Scene. Corsham-based artist Nicola Davis from Nicola Davis Crafts has always used her past to inspire her positive artwork. Having battled and beaten anorexia and depression, bright colours and positive quotes are her tool to inspire others in her unique silk paintings. But as of January this year Nicola, aged 19, launched her first ever cookbook. Focusing on the methods she used in her recovery, ‘My Super Sweet Recovery Cookbook’, is filled to the brim with enticing, easy and approachable recipes for those in recovery from eating disorders. Being one of a few books like this in the world it has been recognised and endorsed by ‘Beat’ the UK’s leading eating disorder charity as well as local Waterstones stores where Nicola has recently held book signings. Each recipe has its own unique step by step guide: altering ingredients or quantities to ease people into recovery at their own pace, and there are recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert. Order your own copy at nicoladaviscrafts.co.uk for £16 with free UK postage, where 10% of all profits will be donated to Beat. … and join in with Nicola’s recovery journey on her social media below:

Meet Samantha Reed S

Founder of the Dancing Academy

AMANTHA REED is the founder of The Dancing Academy which is based at Foundry Lane, Chippenham and sees hundreds of dancers of all ages pass through its door every week. However her personal story and association with dance is deeply inspiring and explain the passion she puts into her business today. Loving dancing from an early age, Samantha was particularly passionate about classical ballet and wanted to be a professional dancer. She took many dance exams and passed them all with flying colours. However she was unable to take up any of the places offered to her at specialist schools because the local authority (not in Wiltshire) would not fund her place and she didn’t have the means to pay her own way. She secured a job within a software company and began to climb the corporate career ladder – turning away from dance for a number of years. Her job began to take her all over the world and she gradually returned to dancing, attending college in the evenings to study for a dance teaching qualification. She realised she couldn’t live without dance in her life and she became a qualified instructor with the Royal Academy of Dance. In her early 30s, Samantha met her future husband Marc, who also worked in the same software company, and they had a whirlwind romance, marrying in 2007.

20

When Samantha was offered the opportunity to study for a higher level teaching qualification at the Imperial Society of Dance in London, Marc supported her and she left her corporate role to try her luck once again in the world of dance. She started her course in 2008 and set up her own dance school in her own home town of Chippenham with three students and a vision of providing top class classical ballet training. The Dancing Academy came into being. Samantha quickly realised she was passionate about all types of dance and teaching others to enjoy dance. She’s also very supportive of would-be dancers from low income backgrounds where lack of money is a barrier to opportunity. Word of mouth from parents meant The Dancing Academy began to grow from a back room in Samantha’s home, to school halls, to a church hall, to a small studio and finally to the current premises in Foundry Lane, Chippenham. Today, the Dancing Academy offers classical ballet, baby ballet, adult ballet for fun, tap dancing, modern and street dancing and much more. Samantha works with other instructors who have all had a successful career in dance and she caters for all abilities. Some students have learning difficulties but Samantha’s ethos is anyone can enjoy dance and aim for achieveable goals. Her most talented students have danced with the English National Ballet, Connie Holmes has gone to The Hammond School Of Dance and Charlotte Andrews is now a student at Tring Park School for Performing Arts. Friends of Abberd Brook LITTER PICK Saturday 29th October 9.30am–11am Friends of Abberd Brook have been working for your community since 2010. Their achievements are amazing. The brook was an untidy forgotten corner of Calne, but the team of volunteers headed by Francis and Lynda Bosworth have brought the area back to life. The team replaced stepping stones for crossing the brook, extended the broad walk, put steps along the pond to help the brook flow freely and created a barrier by the pond with recycled over hanging branches. The lovely mosaic mural at the underpass was the work of Gill and David Neeves; they worked with the children of Priestly Primary school to create this colourful work that just brightens up what was a ugly wall covered in graffiti. The Brook is full of wildlife: Ducks, Kingfishers, Heron also Water Voles. There is so much to see, but it needs to be kept litter free. Litter is not only unsightly, but could be a danger to the wildlife. If anyone is interested in getting involved to help keep this area of our community a pleasant place to live please come along to the Litter Pick on Saturday 29th October 9.30am until 11am. For details phone Shirley Harper-O'Neill on 01249 813462. 24

‘Almost anything sprayed’ claim Wiltshire entrepreneurs

Julia Brotherton, chairman of Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group

Appeal for volunteers to maintain Meadow H ARDWORKING volunteers are appealing for extra help in managing a popular wildlife haven. Baydons Meadow sits on the southern bank of the River Avon just a short walk from Chippenham town centre at the end of Monkton Park. After many years of neglect it was bought by Chippenham Borough Lands Charity in 2000 and is now maintained by local volunteers whose work has helped to attract a wide variety of species. The Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group meets on the first Sunday morning of every month but needs more support to spread the workload. Tasks include hedgelaying, coppicing, mowing the paths and removing litter. In the coming weeks they will also be planting hundreds of new flowers. Chairman Julia Brotherton, from The Butts, said: “There are half a dozen regulars at our monthly workparties but we would welcome more assistance from the local community so that we can carry out more tasks. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and exercise while learning new skills, meeting new people and supporting local wildlife.” The riverbank and hedgerow 26

feature a variety of trees and shrubs including hazel, maple, crab apple, hawthorn, ash and willow, with hundreds of wildflowers in the meadow itself. Together, these create an ideal environment for butterflies, dragonflies, birds, bats, mice, voles, frogs and toads.

Volunteers have installed an information board close to the cyclepath so that visitors are aware of what to look out for, and have also placed log seats for visitors. Julia added: “The meadow is a wonderful spot to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature and we are so lucky to have this piece of countryside on our doorstep. We just need a few more people to help us to maintain it throughout the year. Volunteers don’t need any experience, they just need enthusiasm. All necessary gloves and tools are provided. Working together, we can safeguard the beauty and tranquillity of this lovely field.” For further information on volunteering with Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group, or to arrange school trips to visit the site, call (01249) 651783 or visit: www.baydonsmeadow.org.uk

WO Wiltshire-based couples have joined forces to start a new spray coatings company, Project X Coatings, based in Corsham. They specialise in spraying new uPVC conservatories, doors and windows; garage doors; glass splash backs and kitchen cabinet doors. However their work is not restricted to just these items so if you have a bespoke painting job, on any material, then they encourage you to get in touch to discuss it. Hadi Brooks said: ‘We are combining our expert paint knowledge with our business experience to hopefully make Project X Coatings a success. We are very much looking forward to talking to both trade and individual customers about items we can spray for them. Essentially, if you don’t like the colour of something and you can get it to Corsham then we will change it for you.’ There is no ‘one paint fits all solution’ and their resident paint expert says that he is ‘very much looking forward to using his 7 years’ experience in the industry to offer a bespoke service to every customer.’ Project X Coatings are offering a 10% discount on all orders placed before the end of October 2016. New Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charity Ambassadors W ILTSHIRE sports stars Shelley Rudman and Lauren Booth and broadcaster Alan Dedicoat have become Charity Ambassadors for Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA). Shelley, Lauren and Alan all have a passion for WAA and are committed to helping to raise awareness and funds to enable the charity to save more lives.

said: “I have friends who live in the Wiltshire area and I frequently use the M4 from my home in London to get to the West Country. I know of the good work that Wiltshire Air Ambulance does and I know how – in a medical crisis – speed is of the essence.” David Philpott, Chief Executive of WAA, said: “We are delighted that Shelley, Lauren and Alan have become Charity Ambassadors for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. They are well respected and inspirational in their respective fields. Their support of Wiltshire Air Ambulance will help boost our profile and raise the funds we need to operate an essential helicopter emergency medical service in Wiltshire and surrounding counties. “Shelley, Lauren and Alan all understand the importance of fundraising for charities and we thank them for giving their time to help us with that and using their connections to spread the word about Wiltshire Air Ambulance.” Left: Alan Dedicoat at Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Operations Centre in Devizes.

Shelley, who lives in the Pewsey Vale and who won the Olympic silver medal and was the World Champion in Skeleton Bobsleigh, said: “Generally around where I live, Wiltshire Air Ambulance is very well regarded and there are often fundraising activities which I have been part of or donated items of kit to. I’ve become an Ambassador for it because it’s a local Wiltshire charity and is very much needed in such a rural area. You also never know when and who may need it.” Lauren, 15 of Chippenham, who is a Champion Para-cyclist and is a member of the British Cycling Academy, said: “I’m really pleased to support Wiltshire Air Ambulance and to help raise awareness of the invaluable work carried out by the charity. The air ambulance covers such a large area and is able to get to the required locations within minutes, with highly trained medics and extra medical equipment on board, to help save lives.” Alan, who is known as the ‘Voice of the Balls’ on the National Lottery draw TV programmes and is the voice of Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One, 32

Ted’s Big Bake Off Monday 17th – Friday 21st October 2016 The Forever Friends Appeal is the charity for the RUH and Ted’s Big Bake Off is the annual fundraising week for the hospital. Last year, thousands of people across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire took part in the event and raised over £20,000 to help transform care for patients and their families at the RUH. This year, the event is taking place between Monday 17th and Friday 21st October 2016. Along with their well-known ambassadors “The Fabulous Baker Brothers” of Channel 4 and Hobbs House Bakery fame, the Appeal are now inviting individuals, schools, businesses and community organisations to preheat their ovens, prepare their mixing bowls and get baking to support either the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, or a ward or department of their choice at the Hospital. Britain’s Best Breakfast 10-16th October 2016 Be a good egg and make a difference

A

S our population ages and people live longer, often with complex health conditions, more and more of us will find ourselves caring for someone, with three in five of us becoming carers at some point in our lives. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a family member or friend who cannot manage without their support. They might look after someone with a physical disability, long term health condition, mental health issue or a problem with substance misuse. Carer Support Wiltshire is a local charity supporting carers in Wiltshire. We help them to access support, information, services, education and training, and breaks from their caring role. Our Carer Cafes and Support Groups are held throughout the county and offer friendly advice, help and opportunities to meet other carers and chat over a cuppa. If you are looking after someone and would like to know what support is available telephone: 0800 181 4118. If you would like to support our work by fundraising or volunteering, or are a business or community group looking for a local charity to support we would love to hear from you. You can find out more at: www.carersinwiltshire.co.uk or call us 01380 871690.

Take part in Britain’s Best Breakfast and invite your friends, family or work colleagues to join you for breakfast and help raise money for local charity, Carer Support Wiltshire. You could host a fundraising fry-up for friends or a breakfast buffet at work? Or why not get your school involved? There are over 47,000 carers in Wiltshire and money raised could help in the following ways: £25 could provide a trip to the cinema for two Young Adult Carers to enjoy time with their friends and a break from their caring role. £50 could provide relaxing pampering sessions and a rare treat for five carers. £150 could pay for a series of counselling sessions for carers who need additional support. How to host a breakfast It could be a platter of pastries, a celebration of cereal or a fantastic fry-up - all you have to do is provide an eggcellent breakfast and invite people to join you for an eggceedingly generous donation! Posters and collection tins are available to help make your brekkie a success. Visit www.carersinwiltshire.co.uk/breakfast/

Britain’s Waterways by Kate Duggan

Take a stroll: From a relaxing amble after Sunday lunch, to a full day’s hike, our waterways offer numerous opportunities for walking. There are many circular routes you can take and the toll-paths are carfree. The Newton Poppleford & River Otter walk in Devon, for example, is a beautiful walk along the river, stopping off in the picturesque village of Tipton St John. Find a route near you at www.ifootpath.com. Cycle: Many of the canal paths are ideal for cycling. Pick up an Ordnance Survey map, or plan your route with www.sustrans.org.uk. The Trans Pennine Trail is

46

a good option, with more than 60% of the route being traffic-free and fairly flat. Enjoy a leisurely boat ride: Whether you hire a narrow boat for a day, or a week, boating is clearly one of the best ways to enjoy Britain’s waterways. Visit www.waterways.org.uk for advice and tips. There are more than 100 boat hire firms, with many of the larger ones offering the option to pick up and drop off at different locations. You don’t need any previous experience, as most firms will give you a short training course before you set off.

Try canoeing: Almost 2 million people go canoeing in Britain. It’s a great way to keep fit while exploring the countryside. Check out www.canoe-england.org.uk for inspiration. Trails are colour coded from easy to challenging, so you can pick a route to suit your ability. Purton to Sharpness on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, for example, is classed as an ideal route for beginners. You’ll pass through several villages on route, so may even be able to stop off for a quick cuppa. You need a license to paddle on many of Britain’s waterways, which can be bought from the Canal and River Trust: www. canalrivertrust.org.uk Feeling adventurous? We might think of white water rafting as something to do on holiday, but there are a few British centres. The National White Water Centre, for example, runs sessions on the Welsh mountain river Afon Tryweryn, with prices starting from just £35 for a taster lesson.

Cast off: A leisurely day’s fishing can be a great way to unwind. You will need to purchase a rod fishing license from the Post Office before you cast off. An annual license starts at £27, though you can also buy licenses for shorter periods of time from just £3.75. Fishing rights are often owned by a local fishing club, but a Waterway Wanderers permit (£20 a year) gives you access to most stretches. For more information about Britain’s waterways, visit canalrivertrust.org.uk.

There are more than 2,000 miles of waterways around Britain, so why not make the most of them?

LAPLAND awaits YOU!

I

MAGINE a place where the scenery is simple yet majestic; where sheer silence is only broken by the sound of huskies barking excitedly in anticipation of their next sleigh run. This is a place where you can enjoy a romantic reindeer sleigh ride through a forest covered in deep crisp snow. This is the glory of Lapland, the home of kindly old gentleman, now over 400 years old, who still believes in the true meaning of Christmas – Santa Claus. Celebrate the festive season and enjoy a once in a lifetime holiday to a land full of mystery and magic.

Winter Wonderland day trips Various dates available in November & December from Bristol, Birmingham, Gatwick Prices start from £489 per person Imagine spending the day in Santa's kingdom flying from an airport near you - and still being home in time for supper. For our Walking in a Winter Wonderland day break, we take you to a magical location in the far north of Finnish Lapland, close to a vast snow-covered wilderness and a million miles from other overcrowded and over commercialised Lapland destinations. Here you will experience a magical and unforgettable search for Santa's secret hideaway and each family will have an opportunity to make a private visit to talk with him in his cabin. Plus, a chance to sample reindeer rides, snowmobiles and husky dog sleds. What’s included • Snowmobile trip • Husky Sled Journey • Reindeer sleigh ride • Search for Santa • Private family meeting with Santa • Gift for children • Two course lunch • Snow activities: tobogganing, snowballing and snowman-making 48

Nothing can beat the excitement of setting off by snowmobile into the snowy forest, wrapped up against the cold air, in search of Santa’s hideaway log cabin. Of course, he’ll know your children by name and he’ll give them a present or two in anticipation of the big day itself. Add to this encounters with Santa’s reindeer, a stirring sled safari pulled by a team of huskies, and all kinds of fun in the snow - this three-night short break in Lapland is a Christmas holiday we’re sure you’ll never forget. What’s included • 40-minute Husky Experience • 40-minute Snowmobile Adventure • Reindeer sleigh ride • Search for Santa • Private family meeting with Santa • Three nights full-board accommodation • Gift for children • Snow activities: eg tobogganing, kick sledges (deposit payable) • Christmas Crafts • Festive Dinner

Get the Study Habit by Louise Addison

he kids have been back at school for a month and you may have noticed old battles over homework and study resurfacing.

Now is a great time to introduce good study habits to your child, which will pay off throughout their educational journey. Routine: Get into a homework routine as soon as possible. Immediately after school is good, after they’ve had a snack and a drink, as they will still be in the right frame of mind. Find out what works best for your child though. Some may need to expend pentup energy first, others may need to chill for twenty minutes. ‘Worst first’: When mental energy is high work on the most difficult subject. Don’t try to cram too many subjects into one session. Talk: Encourage your child to talk through the project with you first. Your child is then more likely to get the work right and won’t get frustrated. Gently ask questions about any areas they seem unsure about.

Study station: Designate an area for home learning. Make it as uncluttered and distraction-free as possible. Ensure all equipment required is nearby, so there’s no stalling. No TV: Switch off TVs and phones until after studying. Use it as a bribe if necessary. No games, texting or TV until homework is completed! The earlier your child gets into a routine the easier homework will become, for the whole family.

Dyslexia

T

by Susan Brookes-Morris

HE official definition of dyslexia is: ‘a form of learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.’ Estimates vary but up to 1 in 10 people could be affected. Dyslexia isn’t related to a person’s general level of intelligence and can run in families. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed that certain genes may be inherited which act together in a way that impacts on how the brain develops in early life. The severity of this lifelong condition varies, and it does present daily challenges. With support to improve reading and writing skills however, most of those with dyslexia can go on to be successful in their education and work. Early diagnosis and intervention is paramount to make sure of the best outcome. Common symptoms of dyslexia include: • • • • •

Slowness in reading and writing Confusing the order of words Writing letters such as b and d the wrong way round Having poor spelling Understanding information that is given verbally but struggling with written guidance • Struggling to carry out a sequence of directions • Finding planning and organisation difficult Most of the first steps to get help for those with the condition occur following recognition of difficulties

during school. Additional support will often be available via a school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO). A formal assessment from a specialist dyslexia teacher or educational psychologist can then be organised. Other examinations are often suggested to rule out other problems such as eyesight or hearing problems. An assessment includes analysis of reading, writing, vocabulary, logical reasoning, memory and organisational skills, as well as consideration of the speed at which they process visual and auditory information, and their approach to learning. There is much that can be done to assist those with dyslexia in school and in the workplace: specialist teaching, use of a phonic based learning, and technology such as computers and speech recognition software. Employers are required to make reasonable adjustments to assist employees who have dyslexia. This might include allowing them extra time to complete tasks. There is also lots of support available to help those who are affected make good career choices, apply for jobs or start their own business. Other specific types of assistance include: • Glasses with specialist coloured filters for those who experience Visual Stress. Symptoms of this include letters and words blurring and shaking. • Adjustments to the format of many types of test including music examinations and the driving test. For example during their practical driving test, the examiner may use hand gestures to accompany verbal directions. • Specialist charities such as the British Dyslexia Association and About Dyslexia who provide lots of advice and guidance.

Health Matters

A

Fit for Work! by Emmy Butcher

REN’T I LUCKY? I love my job! Now, it’s not every day you hear somebody say that, but I am fortunate enough to be in a career which I find fulfilling, rewarding and thoroughly enjoy. I recently read an article which stated that 60% of UK workers hate their jobs. I find this terribly sad, it means that only four out of ten people get out of bed in the morning looking forward to their day. I guess part of being happy in the workplace is apportioned to how well you get along with your colleagues and I am pleased to say that I work alongside an amazing team of special and talented people here at Beversbrook Medical Centre. Our cleaners, admin and reception team, HCAs, nurses and GPs are the heart and soul of our little surgery and we all work really well together, which makes it an enjoyable, happy and supportive environment. Another key factor to my sense of job satisfaction is work life balance. I have a certain degree of flexibility over my working hours, which suits me because, believe me, I am NOT a morning person. Having flexibility during my working day means that I can choose to work at times when I know I will be most productive, such as in the evenings. Having the time to get the job done to a good standard is a challenge in our face paced NHS but because I have support from a great team and can get through the workload at a pace to suit me, the stress levels are kept to a minimum. Not all employers have been able to harness the benefit of providing a good work life balance and a supportive environment for their employees and this has a knock on effect on the efficiencies of their workforce. In fact, an increasingly demanding work culture in the UK is widely recognised as being contributively damaging to our mental health and well-being. Recent statistics show that work related stress costs Britain 10.4 million working days per year and accounts for 35% of all work related absences. This is backed up by a Government study on Fit Notes issued over a two year period - which showed that by far the largest proportion of all certificates were issued to patients for mild-moderate mental health disorders including depression, anxiety and stress.

54

Most patients still refer to the Statement of Fitness for Work (Fit Note), introduced in April 2010, as a ‘sick note’ or a ‘doctors note’. A Fit Note can be issued by your GP as evidence of their advice regarding your fitness to work. Normally, your employer will require a Fit Note if you have been absent for more than a week of continuous absence, prior to this date employees might be asked to self-certify and your employer should inform you how to do this. Your GP may charge you for a Fit Note issued before the seventh day. You will normally need to see your GP for an appointment to obtain your first Fit Note after the seventh day, but if you have been under the care of a hospital or other healthcare professional and they have advised a period of rest for recovery you should ask them for a fit note to cover this before you are discharged from their care. It is unlikely that your GP will have specialist occupational health knowledge and their assessment therefore will centre on your fitness to work in general, taking into consideration the symptoms of your diagnosed condition. Your Doctor will ask your opinion on whether or not you feel fit to return to work and may need more information about your type of employment, job role and working environment. Your GP will consider if you feel that you can do work of some kind and they will also take into consideration the impact of long-term health risks, known to affect people out of work, when carrying out their assessment. Your doctor can state whether or not you ‘may be fit for work’ in which case they might suggest necessary adjustments for your employer to consider (such as advising light duties or a phased return to work) or if you are ‘not fit for work’ they will recommend how long your recovery is likely to take. You can however, return to work prior to this date if you are feeling better. If you feel you are fit to work, you do not need any Fit Note certification from your GP, even if you have previously been signed off. Your employer may, however, decide to refer you for a private occupational health assessment if they have any concerns.

If you don’t feel ready to return to work on the date agreed by your GP, you will need to speak with your Surgery about obtaining another certificate. Unless there are any changes in your symptoms, your doctor may be happy to provide another fit note without the need for a further face to face appointment. If your GP has signed you off for a period of four weeks or more, you may benefit from a referral to the free government occupational health service whose specialist advisors can help to develop a return to work plan, tailored to your individual needs. Your GP or employer can refer you to the Fit for Work scheme and more information can be obtained by calling their advice line on 0800 032 6235. As I said before, I do love my job, but despite this I think it takes a certain type of unhinged individual to want to be any kind NHS manager in the present climate. Luckily, I am often described as being on the lighter side of ‘bonkers’ and this helps immensely! Of course some may say that I am suited to my job role as Practice Manager at Beversbrook Medical Centre because I like bossing people around and I have to admit there may be a teensy weensy bit of truth to that…..oh dear...! Bats about Bats! by Louise Addison

B

ats are strongly associated with spooky castles, witches brews and all things Halloween. But there is so much more to this mammal.

One fifth of all living mammals is a bat! They’ve been around for some 64 million years. They are the only mammals which can truly fly (other ‘flying’ mammals such as flying squirrels actually use skin flaps to glide short distances). Most bats navigate by emitting a sound from their larynx out through their mouth and nose. The projected sound wave is reflected off objects in their environment. A bat hears the echo and forms an acoustic image of its surroundings. Because of this a bat can navigate in complete darkness. They are perfectly developed for this type of navigation, with huge ears, nose flaps and tiny eyes. The small subset of bats known as flying foxes navigate by sight and have large eyes and much smaller ears accordingly. In the West bats have been demonised in the form of Dracula, most likely because they are nocturnal creatures and humans are not generally creatures of the night. In ancient history darkness was scary and potentially dangerous. Historically demons are characteristically pictured with bat wings while angels are depicted with bird wings. Not all cultures treat bats in this way though. They are considered auspicious creatures in China, possibly because the Chinese words for ‘bat’ and ‘happiness’ are very similar. 56

Bats play an important role in the ecosystem. Some pollinate plants. Others eat fruit and disperse seeds. Most eat insects. An ordinary brown bat can consume up to 100% of its bodyweight in insects in a single night. It’s hard to overestimate the importance of bats in controlling the insect population and thus protecting food crops. The U.S. bat population is currently under threat from disease and scientists estimate the number of extra insects in the environment as a result of this is around 1500 tonnes! In order to control so many more insects we will be forced to use vast quantities of insecticides; far better to take care of the bats, who do it naturally. Scientists studying deafness and blindness have found studying the genetic code of bats incredibly useful, giving them insights into which areas of the human genome to monitor when looking to prevent disease. One of the most interesting things about bats is that for their size they live an incredibly long time. Most small mammals tend to live fast and die young. Mice live only a year or two and voles a matter of months. Some species of bats can live nine times longer than expected, sometimes more than forty years! Of the 19 species of mammal who live extraordinarily long lives for their size, 18 are bats, so scientists how that by studying they may be able to unlock the mysteries of age-related diseases, such as cancer and dementia. Maybe they hold the key to everlasting youth! I hope I’ve given you an insight into these amazing little creatures and shown you that there’s so much more to them than Halloween!

Mushroom Hunts by Kate Duggan

ICKING your own food can be a very enjoyable way to spend a day. Wild mushrooms are in plentiful supply right now and many are much tastier than any you can buy in a supermarket. First off a warning – some mushrooms can be deadly, so I certainly don’t advise picking any to eat without being absolutely certain what they are. Before trying to identify mushrooms by yourself, it’s a good idea to book onto a foraging course. While some species of mushrooms grow all year around, September to November is generally the best time for foraging, particularly straight after a rainy patch. So where to find them? Well, different species like different habitats, so there’s no quick answer. Some grow in fields, others on trees. You don’t need any specialist equipment for mushroom foraging, just a sharp knife*, suitable containers and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. A wicker basket is ideal for most mushrooms, but it’s a good idea to carry some extra containers to keep any ‘suspect’ mushrooms safely apart, as well as wipes to clean your hands. When it comes to identifying any mushrooms that you find, you’ll need a good reference book, and possibly a magnifying lens. You’ll be looking for the shape of the cap (the main part of the mushroom), as well as the colour, texture, gills, shape of the stem and so on. Some mushrooms are fairly easy to identify, others less so. If in any doubt, don’t risk it! There are 58

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2016

some 15,000 species of mushroom in the UK; some of which are edible (though not all taste good); some of which are poisonous. One of the safest mushrooms for beginner foragers is the giant puffball, as it’s pretty easy to identify. The clue is in the name, as the giant puffball resembles a foot wide ball. Hedgehog fungus is also quite easy to identify, as it has hedgehog like white spikes underneath the cap. Do check a reference guide to make sure you know what you’re looking for though and the safest way to forage is with an expert. October 9th is UK Fungus Day. There’ll be events taking place across the UK, including guided forays. Visit: www.ukfungusday.co.uk for more information. USEFUL SITES Wild Food UK has photos of lots of the most common mushrooms you might find. They also organise foraging events and courses across the country: www.wildfooduk.com Mushroom Diary has information on everything from varieties of mushrooms to laws around picking them: www.mushroomdiary.co.uk The Fungus Conservation Trust is a hive of information, and can point you in the direction of a local foraging group: www.abfg.org *There are laws about carrying knives, so do your research to check that you’re not breaking them!

Gardening Gardening

Spring into action! by Rachel Leverton

P

LANTING DAFFODILS is one of my favourite jobs, though it is tinged with a bit of sadness that summer is now truly over. So planting these sunny yellow flowers is a good way of looking forward to the spring. When I had my very first garden I planted loads of daffodils and had a wonderful display the first year. I congratulated myself that all my hard work was worth it because now I would have a fantastic display for years to come. The second year however I had loads of foliage but just a few flowers. I learned that I had not planted my bulbs deep enough...classic novice error! Bulbs which are too close to the soil surface are subject to drought as soon as the sun begins to shine. They simply don’t get enough moisture or sustenance. It’s the leaves, which remain after the flowers, that pass food to the bulbs as they die back, so the bulbs can store enough nutrients to produce flowers again the following year. Daffodil bulbs need to be planted at least 15cm / 6 inches deep, and don’t cut the foliage back after the flowers have died for at least 6 weeks (another novice error!). In order to produce the best possible display the following year, once the foliage has faded sprinkle some general fertiliser around the plants. When planting for the first time, clumps look best in the average suburban garden. I plant eight to ten bulbs in a round group spaced about 8cm / 3 inches apart. I dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the whole group, firm the earth back into place and (really important) label the spot! That way I avoid spearing the bulbs when I’m digging while they are dormant. If you want early flowers then go for short stems as they survive frost better. The bright yellow ‘Tête-à-tête’ is the perfect partner for late snowdrops. I love ‘Jenny’, which has pale yellow trumpets that gradually fade to white, and ‘Trevithian’ which is a lovely yellow and quite graceful. ‘Thalia’ and ‘Pipit’ are both good later-flowering daffs, and I have a soft spot for ‘Hawera’, which is a soft yellow and multi-headed. The latter looks amazing in a blue pot underplanted with white Pulmonaria angustifolia ‘Sissinghurst White’. Now it’s your turn to spring into action! 60

Harvest: A

5 simple lessons from the humble Cockleshell

s someone who grew up by the coast, Harvest doesn’t simply mean wheat and apples, but it also means fish and seafood. Did you know that according to the Magna Carta, every citizen is entitled to glean 8 pounds of cockles from the sea shore (any more than that requires a license)? Before you rush off, take five minutes to read my meditation on the cockleshell. 1) Cockles remind me that there is still much out there that is free. People love to forage, whether it be wild mushrooms or blackberries or cockles. I’m always awestruck when I think of the huge amounts out there that is freely given to us in God’s creation. Perhaps we can take a moment this month to think about all that is free in our lives: The love of God, family and friends, the air that we breathe, or the food that is freely available around us. 2) One place famous for its cockles is Morecambe Bay. It’s a place we often go to, as a family, on holiday. On 5th February, 2004, Morecombe Bay became the scene of a terrible tragedy: 23 Chinese cockle pickers lost their lives, around 9.30p.m., when they were caught out by the tide. What made the tragedy all the worse was the realisation that these people were illegal immigrants, and were most probably part of an illegal industry that involved modern day slavery. They were being paid 9 pence per pound of cockles in weight. Gangmaster Lin Liang Ren was found guilty of the manslaughter of at least 21 people. This disaster is a poignant reminder that there are many people around the world who are working for less than a dollar a day, or in very dangerous conditions. Perhaps the cockle can remind us to pray for a more just and fairer world. 3) When something “warms the cockles of your heart” it means you have a deeply seated contentment. You are not having to strive for anything more, but happy with what God has given you. Not like the man who kept building bigger barns in Jesus’ parable but whose very life was taken away from him that night! Having the cockles of your heart warmed, being content, gives us the attitude of gratitude. It gives us

6464

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2016

the ability to be truly thankful for all that God has given us, not just food, but clothing, shelter, water, relationships, a purpose in life and even moments of joy and laughter. Let’s take a moment this month to say thank you to God for all that we have. 4) Do you remember the nursery rhyme, “Mary. Mary quite contrary …” It is said to have a hidden meaning! It might refer to Mary Queen of Scots’ persecution of the Protestants and a longing to see Catholicism grow: silver bells being sanctus bells, cockleshells representing pilgrims, and pretty maids describing nuns. It strikes me that there are plenty of things in life to hide behind. The cockle also uses its shell to hide inside. What is it that we are hiding from? Predators perhaps? I wonder if we ever hide from God? Do we need to be more open with God and make ourselves vulnerable. One of the most amazing aspects of the good news of Jesus is that He shows us that God knows everything about us and loves us anyway. Here’s a rhyme from me: God might not like some of the stuff we do, but he always loves us through and through. 5) Finally, the fifth lesson from my cockleshell, comes from St. James. He’s famous for the scallop shell. It is used today as a badge for pilgrims walking along James’ route, towards Santiago de Compostella in northern Spain. The shell represents pilgrimage and people who journey from one place to another. As we journey through life, we recognise at different moments, that Jesus travels with us (like the Emmaus Road experience). If we look closely at the lines of a scallop and a cockleshell, we can see clearly that all the lines come from the same place, the centre. For many years now, those who have worked within our different churches to recognise our unity have used the shell, as a symbol. It reminds us that Jesus is at the heart of the worldwide church and it is only by looking to him that we will all become one. Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

A Good Halloween Read The Man in the Picture by Susan Hill

.............................................................................................. Susan Hill is best known as the author of Woman in Black and this short novel is in a similar vein. It certainly is short, at just 145 pages, and this makes it a perfect story to occupy a dark evening approaching Halloween. Oliver is a Cambridge graduate who is returning to his old college to visit his old professor, Theo Parmitter. The professor is well into his eighties but still attracts the attention of his old students and the younger fellows at the university. There is just something about him. It is during this visit, sitting in the old man’s college rooms on a dark January night with a fire burning in the grate that Oliver hears a story that will irrevocably change his life. In addition to teaching at the university, Dr Parmitter spent his younger years as an art collector, travelling auction rooms buying known and unknown works. It is on one of these trips that he encounters a mysterious painting of a Venetian carnival, complete with gondoliers and revellers in costume and masks. As soon as he sees it he knows that he must have it. After winning the auction he is approached by a man who insists that he must have the painting and tells Theo to name his price. He turns down the offer and the painting enters his life forever. A chance photograph of the professor in a newspaper brings a mysterious old widow into the story. It is from the widow that Dr Parmitter learns the full horror of the painting: a painting with the power to trap and horrify you. For this is no ordinary painting and Theo will find himself drawn into the story told within it, as others have in the past. Who is the man in the picture and why is he screaming and pleading with the viewer? 66

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2016

Like Woman in Black this story is told in the firstperson as Oliver learns about the painting. The narrator switches during the novel to allow us to hear directly from the professor and the Countess. Using the story-within-a-story device, allows the narrative to unfold at a leisurely pace but one which still drives the reader on to learn more. The true horror is revealed at the end and it is guaranteed to leave you wanting more, with so many questions still unanswered.

Goosebumps: Be careful what you wish for by RL Stine

............................................................................................... Keeping with the Halloween theme for the children we have a classic Goosebumps book. Samantha is a bit of a klutz: she trips over, drops things, and despite being tall, can’t manage to shoot on the school’s basketball team. As if that weren’t enough she is picked on by the popular star of the basketball team, Judith. One day Samantha decides that she has had enough and a chance meeting with a strange little woman in the rain gives her the opportunity to get her revenge. Granted three wishes in return for helping the woman Samantha thinks she knows exactly what she wants to wish for. But, as the title says, she learns that you do indeed need to be careful what you wish for as the outcome may not be exactly what you imagined it to be. A great scary read for pre-teen readers this is another instalment of the successful Goosebumps series. The chapters are short with plenty of cliff hangers to keep you reading and a spooky ending that reveals revenge can never be sweet.

The Dragon who loved Hot-pot A spooky children’s story for Halloween

O

NCE upon a long-ago, where the tiny hamlet of Cherry Mead now stands, there had been only the grassy-topped cliffs. The sandy shore was still golden, and the sea was still a dazzling clear blue. The white foaming waves still crashed against the impossibly-jagged teeth of the rock-face, and sea birds wheeled and dived, their raucous cries loud on the salty air. Little had changed. However the cliff top was no longer barren. Little clusters of white painted cottages crowded together, some “tumbling” down the rocky hillside, others preferring to “cling” to the little hollow between the high cliffs. The little town was very pretty, and the visitors who chanced upon Cherry Mead were always pleasantly surprised when, after strolling down the leafy lanes where fat, juicy blackberries hung from thick brambles and all manner of colourful wild flowers made the summer breeze heavy with the heady scent of lavender, wallflowers, thyme and rosemary, when they turned around the final bend – and came upon the delightful little village. There was a well stocked grocery store which took pride in its outdoor display of fruit and veg, carefully balanced on trestle tables, one each side of the shop doorway. A pretty pink-washed hotel with a “vacancies” sign on its glass door stood beside the pebble-dashed post office, and cheek by jowl with these attractive buildings stood a newsagents where picture postcards of Cherry Mead were on sale, and a butchers shop, with links of appetizing sausages hanging from hooks behind the glass counter. To satisfy the few holidaymakers, the hamlet also boasted a fine “olde worlde “ public house, and behind the school, the parish church drowsed in the sunshine, its mellowed stone giving it a look of timelessness, especially when its bells rang out the hours both day and night. 68

As it was the summer holidays, Cherry Mead school was closed for its customary six weeks, and as was usually the case, the school children were beginning to get bored. They would have loved to swim in the bay, or search for pirate treasure in the many caves along the shoreline, but the sea was too unpredictable along their stretch of coastline so the children were forbidden to climb down to the beach even when the tide was out. Notices were displayed along the shore AND the cliff top warning everyone to avoid the sea or they would face prosecution by the law. A few years before, a small boy had almost been drowned when the cave he was playing in was filled suddenly by the booming waves as they surged into the cave. The boy climbed onto a rock just above the level of the sea as it filled the cave, and it was only thanks to the skill and bravery of the lifeboat crew that he was plucked from what could so easily have been a watery grave! Playing on the cliff top wasn’t allowed either. The rough grass ended abruptly and the land fell away, looking down onto cruel, jagged slippery rocks, lashed by the full might of the churning waves, no matter how hot and sunny the day might be. Mind you, they were happy to steer clear of the edge of the cliff top. They had grown up amongst folk who had earned a living from the sea one way or another. Some of the older men had fished the icy waters of the treacherous North Sea like their fathers and grandfathers before them, while others had sailed all over the world with the Navy, sometimes in submarines, others on gunboats patrolling around the shores of the country, keeping watch for any signs of trouble. Many tales were told of happenings from so far back in time, that the teller had to fill in the blanks where memory failed him with a bit of fanciful nonsense. Naturally enough, to the children, these tales were magical. Whenever the village got together for a social evening in the pub, the children would be allowed to sit close by the fire too, and listen to the tales they knew by heart yet demanded to hear again over and over. Tales of enormous sea creatures who could swallow a ship whole. Mermaids who’s songs lured men away from steering their ships until it was too late and the ship was dashed against the rocks, the souls of all the drowned sailors dragged down into the watery palaces below, for the mermaids to use them as slaves. Stories about huge jellyfish who’s sting would kill a man before he had chance to call on God to save him, but best of all were - the serpents and fire-breathing dragons. Some of the old seafaring books that had passed down son to son through the

generations had ancient maps inside them, carefully and painstakingly drawn by hand and turning brown with age, they showed fantastical sea creatures, and landmarks where half the attractions were real and the other half imaginary. The children liked those pictures the best, because around the edges of the pages, where wild waves and empty oceans were shown, just three little words would send them off into daydreams where they pretended to be brave sailors crossing the deep dark sea. Those three little words were – “HERE BE DRAGONS!” Suddenly though, things began to change in a rather frightening way. In the dark of the night, from the cosy depths of their quilts, the sleeping children would be woken by a strange rumbling sound that seemed to make the ground tremble. If the adults heard it at all, they thought it was distant thunder so took no notice. The children however grew curious despite their fears, and decided to meet one dark night on the hilltop. When they all arrived, as they peered into the darkness, a little rumbling whimper sounded from a cave behind them, and rooted to the spot, the children heard gently thumping feet approaching them. One little boy bravely shone his flashlight towards the cave, and there was a sight none of them would ever forget. Before them stood the cutest, smallest and most cuddly baby dragon they had ever seen. Toddling towards them, the tiny creature cried, “Hungry. I is hungry”. One of the girls picked the tiny baby up and wrapped him in her cardigan, then cuddling him to keep him warm, they unscrewed the lid of the thermos flask they had brought with them and poured a little into the cup and offered it to the creature. It was hotpot and the cup was filled three times before the baby was satisfied. He burped contentedly and s soon as he was laid back down on the straw he had been nesting in, he was fast asleep. It was only the next day that the children realised it was November first – all their adventure had taken place on Halloween. What a magic night they had had. After that night, there were no more sounds from the clifftop – until the following Halloween, and it became a tradition for the children to sneak from their beds with plenty of hotpot for the little dragon, until one night, they made their usual trek up the hillside only to discover their strange “ friend “ had gone. They never saw him again, but they never forgot the little dragon who liked hotpot. ……………Jo Deacon…@...2016 ………… The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2016
