Seeking Paradise

AMERICA’S FIRST RESORT DESTINATION

From the Native Americans who first lived here to the early pioneers seeking to create settlements to farmers tending to Belle Glades’ “black gold” soil to immigrants from the Caribbean and Latin America … The Palm Beaches have been influenced by many cultures and ways of life.

This vivid landscape was home to Native American tribes for at least 6,000 years. In what is now DuBois Park in Jupiter, you can see remnants of an ancient Native American coastal shell mound. Learn more about the various local tribes and Spanish explorers by visiting the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, where artifacts are on display. The lighthouse is the oldest structure in The Palm Beaches, shining brightly since 1860.

With the arrival of industrialist Henry Morrison Flagler, The Palm Beaches soon began resembling the picturesque resort destination it is today. Flagler led

the charge of developing the Florida East Coast Railway, making Florida more accessible to travelers. He chose this area to build the Royal Poinciana Hotel (which at the time was the largest wooden structure in the world) and the iconic oceanfront resort now known as The Breakers. These two palatial resorts put The Palm Beaches on the map as America’s First Resort Destination™, the only destination developed exclusively for tourism. In 1902, Henry Flagler built Whitehall, his Gilded Age estate which paved the way to get Palm Beach County incorporated in 1909. Here, Flagler entertained the greatest industrialists and thinkers of the Gilded Age, setting the stage to make Palm Beach the destination of world leaders and celebrities for decades to come. Today, Whitehall houses the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach where you can learn more about Flagler’s achievements.

Another important influence was the eccentric Addison Mizner. In the 1920s, he was an architect who established The Palm Beaches’ architectural style through his buildings on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, using a mix of Spanish and Mediterranean Revival styles. Among his famous works was The Cloister Inn, now known as The Boca Raton

Continue your lesson into local cultural history at Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, which touts a collection of photos and artifacts spanning over 12,000 years. The permanent People and Places gallery gives a comprehensive overview of the region’s rich past.

Want to know how The Palm Beaches got their name?

The Providencia, a Spanish ship carrying coconuts on its way from Cuba to Spain, shipwrecked just offshore in 1878. Local pioneers salvaged and planted the coconuts, which soon became towering coconut trees with beautiful palms. The first hotel was named the Coconut Grove House, and the local beauty inspired Henry Flager to call the area, “veritable paradise.”

Course of Nature

SPORTING EVENTS AMID NATURAL BEAUTY

The Palm Beaches stand proudly as Florida’s Golf Capital®. Home to more golf courses than any other county in the country, it is no wonder why this is where the pros live and play. Greats of the green such as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Bernhard Langer, Camilo Villegas, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka are some of the renowned local residents.

Whether you seek a first-class country club experience or a laid-back day on the links, The Palm Beaches have a course to suit your needs. A day on the green is one of the best ways to drink in the natural beauty of our lush, tropical environment.

If you are seeking a sunrise round, Lake Worth Beach Golf Club will not disappoint. The course lies along the Snook Islands, a 118-acre wetland restoration project located in Lake Worth Lagoon. Sprawling mangroves and two acres of oyster reefs line the course, making it a great spot to watch native seabirds, such as the American oystercatcher, foraging for their breakfast.

Another outstanding oceanfront course is the Palm Beach Par 3. Situated at the southernmost point of the Town of Palm Beach, it provides breathtaking views of the turquoise Atlantic Ocean and Lake Worth Lagoon. Enjoy a relaxing round on this course as you listen to the rustle of seagrape leaves and adore palm trees dancing in the ocean breeze.

The Palm Beaches host four courses that are part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ASCP) for Golf: Okeeheelee Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Park Ridge Golf Course in Lake Worth, Southwinds Golf Course and Osprey Point Golf Course in Boca Raton. The courses are certified in environmental stewardship while protecting native flora and fauna.

If you crave to experience the wild side of The Palm Beaches as you golf, be sure to book your tee time at Sandhill Crane Golf Club. Located in Palm Beach Gardens, the course winds through Loxahatchee Nature Preserve, part of the Everglades ecosystem. Marshland and pine trees line the course immersing you in wildlife as you enjoy the state’s favorite pastime.

OTHER AL FRESCO SPORTS

The combination of beautiful natural surroundings and incredible year-round weather isn’t perfect for golf alone. Plenty of other outdoor sports can be enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike in The Palm Beaches.

Beginning in late-February, we become the spring training home to several MLB teams. You can catch the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros at The Ballpark of The Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, and the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter.

If you prefer your excitement to be of the four-legged variety, you’re in luck. The Palm Beaches are the home to one of the world’s largest polo clubs, the National Polo Center in Wellington. For 17 weeks, fans can watch premier players compete in the Palm Beach International Polo Season as well as the International Gay Polo Tournament that caps

off the season. And from January through April, the Winter Equestrian Festival takes place at Wellington International

Here, riders of all ages and abilities compete for millions of dollars in prize money in more than 18 arenas on 500 acres of ground used strictly for equestrian events.

Tennis and pickleball are two other sports you can both play and watch here in The Palm Beaches. The Wellington Tennis Center as well as countless other locations offer courts of all kinds that suit any level of player. If you’d rather watch the action instead, the Delray Beach Open in February welcomes some of the best players in the game. And as pickleball grows in popularity, more places to play pop up all the time, like the Morton and Barbara Mandel Recreation Center in Palm Beach.

Historic Lake Park is conveniently located near Palm Beach Gardens and Riviera Beach, with easy access to U.S. Highway 1. Visitors will find lots to love on the main thoroughfare, Park Avenue, with its excellent selection of brew pubs and eclectic restaurants frequented by in-the-know locals. Visitors wanting a cultural experience should head to Lark Park Black Box and the Center for the Arts at the Kelsey Theater to catch a live performance. And beautiful natural scenery can be found at Lake Park Marina in Kelsey Park, located right on Lake Worth Lagoon.

Royal Palm Beach

Known as the gateway village to The Palm Beaches’ western communities, Royal Palm Beach offers countless excuses to get out and enjoy the weather. Disc golfers and walkers will love Commons Park, while Calypso Bay Waterpark offers water slides, a meandering lazy river, and an interactive water playground to help visitors beat the heat. Be sure to check the schedules for Commons Park, Veterans Park, and Royal Palm Beach Cultural Center to see if there are any fun events, like concerts, food truck gatherings, or holiday celebrations happening during your stay. The Brass Ring Pub, a fun sports bar, and Royal Palm Brewing Company, are the perfect places to grab a cold one with friends.

Where The Locals Go

These hidden gems and longtime traditions bring the best of The Palm Beaches to your plate—and your palate.

CUBAN CUISINE & COFFEE

From ropa vieja (ultra-tender, shredded beef) to arroz con pollo (a one-pot dish of chicken and yellow rice), the flavors of the Caribbean come to life at Don Ramon Restaurante Cubano on Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach. Finish your meal with caramel-drenched flan custard and a tiny cup of café Cubano: robust, sweetened espresso.

COOK YOUR CATCH

In The Palm Beaches, fresh seafood is what we do best—and it’s even better when you catch it yourself. After spending a day boating and fishing, dock at the waterfront Deck 84 in downtown Delray Beach and bring in your just-caught and filleted fish for the chefs to prepare it any way you like.

FRIED ALLIGATOR

Satisfy your adventurous side when you try this exotic meat— touted to have a mild fish flavor and a firm texture. West Palm Beach’s Dixie Grill & Brewery serves it freshly battered, fried and paired with chipotle aioli. Tip: Order a pint of craft beer from the in-house brewery.

COCONUT CRÈME PIE

Indulge in a taste of the tropics at Ta-boo on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, where the dessert menu includes its “Famous Taboo Lust,” a slice of sumptuous pie featuring a walnut cookie crust, coconut cream filling, whipped cream topping and toasted coconut—a nod to the famed Providencia shipwreck that gave The Palm Beaches its name.

STEAK & SEAFOOD

There’s nothing like fresh lobster tail broiled to perfection and bathed in butter. Order it alongside a USDA prime steak— dry aged and cut in-house—at

Okeechobee Steakhouse, the oldest steakhouse in Florida, open since 1947.

TIKI BAR

Sit out on the patio of the waterfront Square Grouper Tiki Bar in Jupiter to take in views of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse while sipping island-inspired cocktails and frozen, fruity concoctions. Cheers to vacation!

PERUVIAN DISHES

At their restaurant Mestizo Peruvian Cuisine, husband and wife team Misleidy Amores and Pedro Rivera serve up flavorful Peruvian favorites such as ceviche (raw, marinated fish), beef or chicken saltado (stir fry), fried yuca, causa (layered potato casserole) and fruity chicha morada (a deep-purple corn beverage). Bonus: vegans will also find a comprehensive menu of offerings. Other iconic locations include Dr. Limon on the bustling 500 block of Clematis Street in West Palm Beach and Victoria’s in Lantana.

JAMAICAN SPECIALTIES

Locals flock to Jamaica House Grill in Wellington for good reason. Indulge in braised oxtails, wild salmon marinated in jerk seasoning, chicken wings tossed

in spicy mango sauce and jumbo shrimp breaded with sweet coconut flakes. Cap off your meal with a slice of signature black cake and rum raisin ice cream.

WATERFRONT DINING

Waterfront dining in The Palm Beaches makes any meal extra special. The smell of the salt air and sounds of waves create vacation memories.

Beginning in Jupiter, the Charlie & Joe’s Love Street restaurants are a collection of casual yet chic establishments featuring

all-American and fresh seafood including Beacon, Topside, Lucky Shuck and The Tackle Box. Arrive by boat or car at 1000 North and revel in views of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Intracoastal Waterway while munching on the Palm Beach Tower consisting of an epic display of oysters, shrimp, stone crab claws and lobster. Just south is 3800 Ocean situated right on the Atlantic Ocean on Singer Island at the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa. While you watch the surf, try the Maine Lobster Pie, a creamy

bisque with vegetables in a puff pastry. Make it a sophisticated evening at The Breakers and dine at The Seafood Bar, complete with bespoke nautical details, beautiful aquariums and a front row seat to view the ocean. Enjoy the fresh catch of the day, prepared to your heart’s desire either wood grilled, blackened or pan seared. When you’re in Boca Raton, rendezvous at The Seaspray Inlet Grill and watch the yachts pass by as you sip on a signature cocktail like the Monkey Mule and indulge in fresh shrimp tacos.
