PROFILED VENUES
Shaw Centre The Shaw Centre is a state-of-the-art aquatic and fitness facility offering a new calibre of recreation, health and fitness opportunities to the residents of Saskatoon. The competitive pool in the Shaw Centre is one of the largest volume indoor pools in the world (holding 4.3 million liters of water), with a Myrtha stainless steel basin, which is used exclusively for high calibre swimming events. The pool was designed to meet Federation Internationale du Natation (FINA) regulations for hosting aquatic events. The competitive pool also features two one-meter spring boards; two three-meter spring boards; and a three, five, seven and a half, and ten meter diving platforms. The scoreboard and video display, sponsored by the 1989 Jeux Canada Games Foundation, is the largest installation for an indoor aquatic facility in North America. Additional features at the Shaw Centre include a six-lane, 25m Warm-Up Pool, Family Pool with a waterslide, two hot tubs and a mushroom fountain, Hamm Fitness Centre and Walking Track including cardio and weight machines, cafeteria, meeting rooms, and a multi-purpose room.

WINTER sports Without a doubt, Saskatoon loves to host winter sport events. From curling and hockey to figure skating and speed skating, the city comes alive in the winter. Located in the middle of the Canadian Prairies, Saskatoon’s long winters make it the perfect city for ice sport events. From the Western Hockey League’s Saskatoon Blades, to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and numerous pre-season NHL games, Saskatoon’s passion for hockey grows each year. But it’s not just hockey fans you’ll find in Saskatoon. The city has hosted the Brier, the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship, 6 times, breaking the attendance record during the 2000 championship. Speed Skating Clarence Downey Speed Skating Oval The Clarence Downey Speed Skating Oval offers an exciting change of pace for skating enthusiasts. You do not need speed skates to enjoy skating at the 400 m outdoor oval. There are different lanes for different speeds and lots of room for every level of skater. The Oval is home to the Saskatoon Lion’s Speed Skating Club’s long track speed skating program and has produced Olympic athletes such as Catriona Le May Doan. Located in the Gordon Howe Park at 11th Street and Avenue R South, the facility features a modern warm-up building that lets you lace up your skates in comfort. There is also a vending machine, change rooms and public washrooms. This outdoor facility is open from late fall until early spring. The Oval was named after the first coach of the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club, which is the longest running speed skating club in the country. The club has hosted national events at the Oval including the Canada Cup II & III and the Canadian Junior Long Track Speed Skating Championship.

curling clubs CN Curling Club One of four curling clubs in the city, the CN Curling Club is located in the Montgomery Park area of Saskatoon. Originally built in 1939, the club was rebuilt in the 1960’s and has seen many improvements since then. The club operates men’s, women’s, senior, junior, open and mixed leagues on five sheets of ice with spectator seating for 220. The facility features a concession, locker rooms, free parking and a second level viewing area. The club has hosted regional playdowns, tournaments and bonspiels for the last 75 years.

Granite Curling Club One of four curling clubs in the city, the Granite Curling Club is located in downtown Saskatoon. The club operates men’s, women’s, senior, junior, open and mixed leagues on nine sheets of ice with spectator seating for 300. Open from October to April, the club hosts regional playdowns, tournaments and bonspiels in addition to the weekly league schedule. As Saskatoon’s largest curling club, the facility features a concession and lounge, locker rooms, pro-shop and additional meeting space. The club also hosts learn to curl sessions aimed at increasing the popularity of curling in Saskatoon.

Nutana Curling Club One of four curling clubs in the city, the Nutana Curling Club is located in the Nutana area of Saskatoon. Operating from September to April, the club operates men’s, women’s, senior, junior, open and mixed leagues on eight sheets of ice. When the curling season is over, the Nutana Curling Club becomes the perfect venue for weddings, banquets, dances and festivals. Facility features include a concession and lounge, locker rooms, free parking, spectator seating for 250, and additional meeting space. The Nutana Curling Club is home to two world events each year. The Point Optical Curling Classic each September is a Men’s World Curling Tour event featuring 32 men’s teams. The Colonial Square Curling Classic each November is a World Curling Tour Grand Slam Event featuring 32 women’s teams from across the country and around the world.

Sutherland Curling Club One of four curling clubs in the city, the Sutherland Curling Club is located in the Sutherland area of Saskatoon. ARENAS ACT Arena Home to Skate Saskatoon, the city’s largest figure skating club, the ACT Arena hosts many of the city’s figure skating programs. With two ice surfaces available, the arena is capable of hosting a variety of winter activities and sports. The ACT Arena has hosted provincial figure skating championships and has served as the practice facility for a number of national Skate Canada figure skating events. Municipally owned and operated, ACT Arena features two unique ice surfaces. With no rink boards, Rink 1 is ideal for figure skating and short track speed skating events. Rink 2 includes rink boards and seating for up to 400 spectators. The facility includes digital scoreboards and sound systems, concession, meeting space and free parking.

Archibald Arena Archibald Arena is one of many indoor arenas in the city. Located in GD Archibald Memorial Park along Spadina Crescent, the arena is across from the South Saskatchewan River and the beautiful Meewasin Valley trail system. Municipally owned and operated, the facility is open from late fall to early spring. Archibald Arena features many of the amenities you would find in most arenas including one ice surface (185 X 85 feet), a digital scoreboard and sound system, concession, free parking and seating capacity for up to 500 spectators. Mainly used by minor hockey teams, the facility also offers additional programming such as learn-to-skate programs, public skating times and unique events throughout the winter.

Canlan Ice Sports - Agriplace Canlan Ice Sports – Agriplace features two ice surfaces for a multitude of winter sport programming. Mainly used by minor hockey and adult hockey leagues, the facility hosts numerous tournaments every year and has served as the practice facility for national figure skating events, due to its proximity to Credit Union Centre. Privately owned and operated, Canlan Ice Sports –Agriplace features two ice surfaces (200 X 85 feet) that are available for rental to groups for private and corporate events. Canlan Ice Sports - Jemini Canlan Ice Sports – Jemini is Saskatoon’s premier multi-surface ice sport facility. The facility hosts some of Saskatoon’s most popular hockey tournaments including the iconic City of Bridges Tournament. From novice to adult leagues, Canlan Ice Sports – Jemini is ready to host! The facility is home to four ice surfaces (200 X 85 feet), making it the city’s busiest arena! The Thirsty Penguin at Canlan Ice Sports – Jemini is the perfect place to unwind after the game, or while the kids are on the ice. The Thirsty Penguin offers perfect viewing on all four sheets of ice, so you can enjoy your favourite beverage from the bar or fare from the restaurant. Cosmo Arena Located at 3310 Laurier Drive in Confederation Park, the Cosmo Arena is one of Saskatoon’s popular municipal rinks. The facility has hosted national, regional and provincial short track speed skating events and is open September to March to accommodate both recreational and competitive athletes. The facility offers learn-to-skate programming, public skating and plays host to minor hockey games throughout the year. Harold Latrace Arena Harold Latrace Arena is one of the city’s most popular arenas. The facility has hosted many national events, including the Keystone Cup – Junior B Hockey Championship in 2012 and the Canadian Ringette Championship in 2010. Harold Latrace is home to a number of Saskatoon’s minor hockey teams, including the Saskatoon Royals (Junior B), Saskatoon Comets (female hockey), Saskatoon Aces (novice to midget), Saskatoon Blazers (Midget AAA) and Saskatoon Ringette. The facility offers a wide variety of programming including learn-to-skate, public skating and hockey leagues and is available from late fall through spring. Rutherford Arena Located on the University of Saskatchewan campus, Rutherford Arena is open from mid-July to the end of March. Home to Huskie Athletics men’s and women’s hockey teams, the facility also sees extensive usage from the University’s Campus Recreation programs and public skating. Named after the University’s first Dean of Agriculture, Rutherford Rink was the first recreational facility on campus and officially opened to the public in 1929, with renovations in the 1980s. Owned and operated by the University of Saskatchewan, the facility features many of the amenities rinks have to offer including one ice surface (180 X 65 feet), digital scoreboard, concession and locker rooms, and spectator seating for up to 900.

Saskatoon Field House Versatility is the key feature of the Saskatoon Field House. In addition to being a fitness and high-performance athletic training centre, it’s a great place to hold meetings, workshops, clinics, trade shows and sport events. The 48,000 square foot main field area can accommodate up to 4,500 people. The retractable bleachers adjacent to the main field seat 3,500 people. The 17,000 square feet on the second level includes a weight room, fitness/dance studio, multipurpose room and two meeting rooms. The fitness/dance studio has a collapsible wall allowing it to open on to the hallway, providing a perfect space for convention trade shows and displays. Additional features include a cafeteria, dry sauna and a steam room. The main field area features a 6-lane, 200 m track and is also equipped for tennis, badminton, soccer and basketball. All courts have fully extending curtain dividers.

Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre Home to many of Saskatoon’s water sport groups, Harry Bailey is an ideal practice environment for speed swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo. Scuba divers, canoers, kayakers, triathletes and emergency service personnel also find the Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre to be a great place to train and learn new skills. The Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre was the proud host venue for aquatic sports when Saskatoon hosted the Jeux Canada Games in 1989. The facility features a competitive 50 m pool with diving platforms (5, 7 & 10 m) and diving boards (1 & 3 m), as well as a 25 m warm up pool.

Education Building The Education Gym at the University of Saskatchewan features one full basketball or volleyball court (or two volleyball or basketball courts set up cross court) or eight badminton courts with seating for up to 800 spectators. Before the Physical Activity Complex was completed in 2003, the Education Gym played host to a number of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships in basketball, volleyball and wrestling. Once home to the University of Saskatchewan volleyball and basketball teams, the Education Gym is now the home of Campus Recreation events. The College of Education also features the Education Pool, a Junior Olympic sized swimming pool. The facility features a digital scoreboard and sound system, concession, locker rooms, fitness centre, meeting space and plenty of metered parking. The facility also includes six outdoor regulation size tennis courts behind the Education Building which are available to the public.

Griffiths Stadium Home to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football and soccer teams, Griffiths Stadium is Saskatoon’s most popular football facility. With spectator seating of over 6,100, Griffiths Stadium features a regulation sized turf football field, with a surrounding eight lane track to accommodate Saskatoon’s track and field community. Griffiths Stadium was proud to host the 2006 PotashCorp Vanier Cup, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s men’s football championship. 2006 marked the first time the championship was held outside of Ontario since its inception in 1965.

The Bowl Located in Saskatoon’s historic Holiday Park neighbourhood, the Bowl at Gordon Howe Park opened in September of 1960 and has since become a local landmark, attracting athletes and spectators from across the country. The Bowl is the past and present home of multiple distinguished Saskatoon football programs, including minor football, high school football and the Saskatoon Hilltops of the Canadian Junior Football League. Currently a grass field, major renovations in 2014 will see the installation of artificial turf and upgrades to the entire facility. The Bowl features concessions, locker rooms and spectator seating for up to 4,000. Events hosted at The Bowl include Canadian Junior Football Conference championships, provincial football championships and city football championships.

Ball Diamonds Saskatoon summers are dominated by ball games. From softball to baseball, midget to senior, there’s a ball league for every skill level. The Saskatoon Yellow Jackets, the city’s Western Major Baseball League team play weekly starting in June at Cairns Field. Gordon Howe Park and Bob Van Impe Park hosted the 2009 ISF World Men’s Softball Championship, one of the most successful summer events hosted in Saskatoon. There’s no better place to spend the summer than at the ball park.

Bob Van Impe Stadium Bob Van Impe Stadium is Saskatoon’s premier softball facility. Operated by the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association, the stadium is rated for Canadian and International events and features seating for 3,750 spectators, a media and interview area, VIP hospitality areas, on-site food and beverage services as well as a facility management crew to ensure the diamonds are in immaculate condition. The facility is adjacent to Gordie Howe Field and Glen Reeve Fields, increasing the size of the softball complex to 8 diamonds, perfect for additional games and practices during events. In 2009, the facility was host of the International Softball Federation (ISF) World Men’s Softball Championship, which was widely considered to be one of the best run championships in the event’s history. Due in part to the success of that event, Saskatoon was chosen to host the ISF World Men’s Softball Championship again in 2015.

Glen Reeve Fields Operated by the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association, the Glen Reeve Fields are the city’s supplementary softball facilities. Located in Gordon Howe Park, the Glen Reeve Fields have hosted events from the smallest softball tournament to world championships. Featuring six softball diamonds, the fields are rated for Canadian and International events. With a seating capacity of 90 per field, the Glen Reeve Fields feature player dugouts, home run fences, washrooms and plenty of free parking. The fields host the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association’s six softball leagues, in addition to hosting city tournaments and provincial championships. The fields were used as a practice facility for the 2009 International Softball Federation’s World Men’s Softball Championship and will do so again in 2015 when Saskatoon again hosts this prestigious event.

Gordie Howe Field Operated by the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association, Gordie Howe Field is Saskatoon’s second largest softball facility. Located in Gordon Howe Park, the city’s multi-sport destination, the field is rated for Canadian and International events. Cairns Field Cairns Field is Saskatoon’s premier baseball facility. Located in Gordon Howe Park, the field is home to the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets of the Western Major Baseball League. Geoff Hughes Baseball Complex The hub of Pee Wee baseball in Saskatoon is the Geoff Hughes Baseball Complex. Owned by the city and maintained by the minor baseball program, the facility features three baseball diamonds with shale infields, home run fences and a clubhouse with washroom facilities, meeting room and concession. Each diamond features seating for up to 40 spectators and benches for players and coaches. All fields meet Pee Wee (ages 12 & 13) national standards and improvements to the facility are on-going. The Geoff Hughes Baseball Complex is considered one of the best Pee Wee baseball parks in Western Canada. The complex has hosted numerous events in the past, including the Western Canadian Pee Wee Championship. The facility is part of Gordon Howe Park, Saskatoon’s premier sports park.

Kilburn Park Kilburn Park is Saskatoon’s Mosquito level (ages 9 & 10) baseball park. Located in one of Saskatoon’s oldest neighborhoods, the park has been an important part of the community for many years. Each year, Kilburn Park hosts the league championships at the Mosquito level. Kilburn Park features many amenities for the minor baseball enthusiast. The park includes four diamonds, built to Mosquito level standards with home run fences. Also included at the park are seasonal washroom facilities and a batting cage built by the Saskatoon Baseball Council Inc. Nutana Kiwanis Complex Home to Bantam baseball in Saskatoon, the Nutana Kiwanis Complex is the place to watch minor baseball in the summer. Municipally owned and operated, the baseball complex features four baseball diamonds with shale infields, home run fences, concession and free parking. Kate Waygood Park One of Saskatoon’s newest baseball parks, Kate Waygood Park is home to the city’s Midget (ages 16 to 18) league and hosts the league championship each year. Auto Clearing Motor Speedway Auto Clearing Motor Speedway is Saskatoon’s premier auto racing venue. This 0.5 km paved oval with progressive banking is owned and operated by the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association. The speedway is located on Highway 12 just outside of Saskatoon towards Martensville. The facility features grandstand seating for over 3,300 and 15 corporate chalets for guests to take in all the stock car action. The facility has several racing classes including Sport Compact Mini Stock, Pro Truck, Western Elite, Street Stock, Super Late Model and Thunder Stock. The racing lasts May to September with the premier event being the NASCAR Canadian Tire Race Series event, hosted each July since 2009. Saskatoon International Raceway Saskatoon International Raceway is Western Canada’s oldest drag strip. Riverside Badminton & Tennis Club Situated on the South Saskatchewan River in Victoria Park, the Riverside Badminton & Tennis Club is the province’s premier racquet facility.
