A Message from Colin Basran, Mayor of Kelowna Welcome to Kelowna — it’s always a pleasure to welcome people to our area, especially if you’ve never visited here before. I was born and raised in Kelowna and proud to live in one of Canada’s most beautiful regions. Kelowna is the biggest city in the Interior of BC and one of the fastest growing places in Canada. People from across Canada and around the world have always been attracted to Kelowna for its natural beauty — hot, dry summers and moderate winters, beautiful lakes, beaches, mountains, and plentiful outdoor recreation opportunities to enjoy in every season. Along with our amazing agricultural bounty, viticulture, and culinary temptations, Kelowna is also the urban and economic centre of the Okanagan. We’re an urban city with a local economy that is diversified, innovative, and growing, including an expanding technology sector and one of the busiest international airports in Canada. We attract people and entrepreneurs from across Canada and around the world who are as committed as we are to creating this balance of lifestyle and economic growth. As an open and inclusive city, we work to make sure people from all walks of life can find their place in Kelowna. Thank you for visiting Kelowna. On behalf of our nearly 130,000 citizens, I hope you have an amazing stay and enjoy the waterfront, the hillsides, agricultural areas, and cultural attractions. Mayor Colin Basran

ORIGINALLY BUILT BETWEEN 1912 AND 1914 AS PART OF THE KETTLE VALLEY RAILWAY, THIS 12 KM SECTION THROUGH MYRA CANYON INCLUDES 18 TRESTLE BRIDGES AND TWO TUNNELS. TODAY THIS INCREDIBLE LANDMARK IS EXPERIENCED BY OVER 75,000 VISITORS ANNUALLY.

Myra Canyon Trestles on the Kettle Valley Railway The Myra Canyon Trestles trail, designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2002, is a 12 km section of the historic Kettle Valley Railway (KVR). Constructed at the turn of the century, it was considered a truly outstanding feat of railway engineering. In order for the KVR to pass through Myra Canyon, 18 wooden trestle bridges and two tunnels had to be built by hand, creating a visually stunning and unforgettable landmark, which today is visited by over 75,000 people a year. You can hike the trestles, or rent a bike through Myra Canyon Bike Rentals and cycle it, or sign

up for a guided tour with Giro Okanagan Cycling Adventures, Cheers! Okanagan Tours, or Kettle Valley Railway Cycling Company to learn more about the trail. GETTING THERE: Myra Canyon is located only 24 km from downtown Kelowna (40 minute drive to Myra Station). This scenic drive will take you past farms, orchards, vineyards, and golf courses. The road up to the trestles is gravel, but most vehicles should be able to make the climb during the summer and fall months. At Myra Station, there is a large parking area beside the entrance to the trail.

GUIDED TOURS Taking a guided tour of Myra Canyon is an easy way to explore the trestles and tunnels. Tour guides ensure fun and informative trips, and most companies offer pick-up and drop-off service. Guided tour along the trestles Credit: Giro Okanagan

WINTER WONDERLAND

17

KELOWNA BECOMES A MAGICAL WONDERLAND DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. SNOWY BLANKETS COVER THE ACRES OF VINEYARDS AND ORCHARDS, AND THE RUGGED LANDSCAPE TURNS THE CITY INTO AN OUTDOOR PLAYGROUND.

Big White Ski Resort Credit: Geoff Holman

Kelowna has a reputation as a summer destination, but locals know there is something magical about winter. The rolling hills, winding roads, scenic lake views, and snow-covered vineyards turn Kelowna into a beautiful winter wonderland. Explore the award-winning wine scene on a guided tour and sample wines, from an oaky Chardonnay to a robust Zweigelt. The icy-cold weather also brings something special and quintessentially Canadian to our local vineyards, the harvesting of Icewine. Created using grapes that have frozen on the vine, it’s known for its sweetness and complex flavours. Another winter staple in Kelowna is Stuart Park’s free outdoor staking rink. With beautiful lake views, sparkling lights, and fire pit, it’s a “must do” for skaters of all ages and skill levels. If you get a little chilly, there’s plenty to do indoors too. In the

the downtown Cultural District, you can visit a museum, browse boutiques, grab a seasonal beer at a craft brewery, enoy a latte at a cozy café, or relax over a farm-to-table meal. At higher elevations, and just outside of Kelowna, you’ll find Big White Ski Resort, Canada’s largest totally ski-in/ski-out resort village. Experience amazing skiing and snowboarding, from beginner-friendly runs to steep drops into high alpine bowls. The mountain also offers many activities for the entire family, such as tubing, ice-climbing, snowshoeing, horsedrawn sleigh rides, and even dog sledding! Not into downhill? Not a problem. With over 250 kms of trails to explore, two cross-country ski clubs in the community, and several more in the surrounding areas, it’s a perfect way to take in the area’s natural beauty.

LOVE FOR KELOWNA Head to Bear Creek in West Kelowna for a crisp winter hike and explore the beauty of a frozen waterfall, or visit a local winery for a winter wine tasting.

Eat The use of locally-grown food in Kelowna restaurants is a commitment to excellence shared by farmers and chefs. Waterfront Wines has a passion for fresh, local ingredients that can be tasted in each of its dishes. At Red Fox Club, an aboriginal-inspired restaurant at Indigenous World Winery, Chef Andrea Callan is dedicated to celebrating ingredients from local greenhouses, farms, cheese makers, and purveyors. The inspiring menu is committed to indigenous flavours and is paired beautifully with a glass of red or white. If your cravings are on the sweeter side, Parlour Ice Cream is a "must stop." Okanagan strawberries, Gellatly Nut Farm hazelnuts, Bean Scene coffee, lavender from Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm, and Okanagan Spirits whiskey are some of the amazing ingredients you’ll find here. Indulgent, inspired, and heavenly, Parlour Ice Cream is locally sourced and crafted with love. Farm During the summer months, there is an explosion of colour, taste, and scent in the valley. Fruits are luscious and ripe, honeys and herbs are bright and vibrant, and the local wines make a perfect pairing.

Stop at a roadside fruit stand. Visit a farm or orchard. Gorge on cherries. Stomp grapes. Spend a morning strolling through orchards, picking cherries in July, or peaches in August at one of the many u-pick farms that pepper the scenic Kelowna landscape; and indulge in the freshest fruit you can imagine. For a full list of u-pick farms, go to page 43. Shop If you’re looking to shop local, One Big Table has got your back. It’s a cooperative owned local grocery store and café that provides seasonal fruits and vegetables, free range meats and eggs, and artisan cheeses and breads. They offer the small, the unique, and the traditionally made.

KELOWNA VIBES Check out the Kelowna Farmers' & Crafters' Market. Open year round, the market is one of the largest in BC with up to 200 vendors. See their ad on page 43.

Kelowna is all about perfect pairings. BC’s first vines were planted in Kelowna and it’s also home to the province’s oldest continually operating winery, Calona Vineyards (est. 1932). Travel past orchards and farms as you explore over 40 wineries, many of which offer exceptional dining experiences with fantastic views, and fresh local ingredients. Whether it's spring, summer, fall, or winter, expect to be enchanted as knowledgeable proprietors, dedicated hosts, and award-winning winemakers pour their wines and share their stories as you explore Kelowna’s five distinctive wine trails. Lakeshore Wine Route is home to some of the oldest and most established vineyards in the valley, and it offers a stunning, picturesque drive that runs alongside the lake in south Kelowna.

#exploreKelowna The Fall and Spring Okanagan Wine Festivals feature spectacular events with delicious BC wine and food. For festival details, visit our calendar of events on tourismkelowna.com.

For more listings, visit page 22

The Kelowna FAB Five wine trail, set amongst the orchards and named for its route along a five-mile stretch on the southeast Kelowna bench, includes charming, funky, and unique examples of family-owned wineries. Lake Country’s Scenic Sip, located between Kelowna and Vernon, is known for award-winning wines and awe-inspiring views. All eight wineries are committed to creating wines that showcase their unique terroir. West of Kelowna, and over the William R. Bennett Bridge, is the Westside Wine Trail. As the area’s largest and most diverse trail, it’s peppered with spectacular lake views, miles of vineyards, and an amazing variety of tasting rooms and chef-inspired dining experiences. If you’re looking for a trail that you can walk, cycle, or longboard, check out the Grapes to Grains Trail in downtown Kelowna. It includes award-winning urban wineries, and craft breweries, cideries, and distilleries, all located within a few blocks of each other. Can't decide which winery to visit? Guided tour operators can build a customized wine tour just for you. Leave the driving to them, while you sit back, take in the flavour, and soak in the scenery. For guided tour operator listings, go to page 34.

NOT ONLY WINERIES. IN RECENT YEARS THERE HAS BEEN A SURGE OF BREWERIES, CIDERIES, AND DISTILLERIES POPPING UP ALL OVER KELOWNA. VISIT THEIR LIVELY TASTING ROOMS, ORDER A FLIGHT, AND LEARN HOW A SMALL-BATCH CRAFT BREWERY OPERATES.

Kettle River Brewing Co. Credit: BC Ale Trail

Kelowna is no longer all about award-winning wines. In the last few years it has developed a rich culture of small batch, locally-made craft beers that are definitely worth a try. Their sit-down tasting rooms offer a great opportunity to try the freshest brews, and learn about the stories behind them. Grab a tasting flight at Tree Brewing Beer Institute, a staple of Kelowna’s craft scene, enjoy some German-style Pilsners at Boundary Brewing, or pair your ales with some 10-pin bowling at BNA Brewing or Freddy’s Brewpub. If you’re looking for great vibes and even greater brews, head to the north end of downtown to experience popular microbreweries like Kettle River Brewing, Red Bird Brewing, and Vice & Virtue Brewing, all within a block of each other.

With acres of fruit orchards in the valley, it’s no surprise that we are seeing more cideries opening their doors. BC Tree Fruits Cider Company, Soma Craft Cidery, and Truck 59 Ciderhouse are great examples of vibrant cider tasting rooms that are open year round. For a farm-to-flask experience, visit award-winning Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery Western Canada's oldest distillery, or tour Urban Distillery + Winery and see their artisan copper stills. Love craft beers? The Great Okanagan Beer Festival is a three-day celebration, offering festival and beer lovers a mix of amazing programming at local bars and pubs. The main event is held on Waterfront Park, where over 60 craft breweries will come together to pour over 120 beers and ciders for 3,000+ festivalgoers.

KELOWNA VIBES Keep an eye out for the food trucks parked in front of our many downtown breweries. For example, Little Tokyo Ramen food truck can frequently be seen parked in front of Kettle River Brewing Co. Cheers to locally-crafted beverages Credit: Tourism Kelowna

There’s something magical about Kelowna in the winter. The air is crisp and pure, and on a clear day you can see the surrounding snow-dusted mountains reflected on Okanagan Lake’s glassy surface. The city has a reputation as a summer destination, but locals know that Kelowna's mild, enjoyable winter climate shines, too.
