DIRECTORS’ NOTES
It’s so great to have the Lawyer Show back on stage for its 20th production!
We were in Mamma Mia! rehearsals back in 2020 when things ground to a halt. Happily, many of the cast have remained with the project through our subsequent postponements and for our online Cabaret-A-Ganza in 2021. Many new cast members have joined the production as well, most making their Lawyer Show debut.
It takes more than a village to put on a Broadway-style musical and Mamma Mia! has been a real feat involving hundreds of hours. It’s been a labour of love for these incredible members of the legal community, our professional Musical Director, Choreographer, the Designers, Production, and Administration team. I thank everybody involved for bringing Mamma Mia! to full, vivid life! It’s a show about love, joy, old flames, and new possibilities.
A big shout out to our sponsors, donors, and volunteers. Mamma Mia! is a joyful way to raise funds for our work as a small professional theatre company, renowned for premiering new Canadian plays and supporting our local community.
Thank you also to Carousel Theatre and The Arts Club for previous partnerships. And Thank You to our wonderful audience for joining us. Your support means the world to us! Please join the cast for our post-show celebration reception in the bar area and check out our silent auction!
Thank you so much!

James Blackwood SKY
James Blackwood is brand new to theatre, brand new to Vancouver, and brand new to law! He is a first-year student at the Peter Allard School of Law at UBC. Originally from a small Alberta farm town, he now is living the big city lifestyle of stress and unreasonably high rent. The Lawyer Show has presented not only an invaluable escape fromv the stresses of life and law school, but an incredible opportunity to network with brilliant and talented members of the legal profession. Couldn’t be happier to be a part of it!
Jonathon Braun EDDIE
Jonathon is excited to rejoin the Lawyer Show, having previously appeared in Hairspray!, Grease, and The Drowsy Chaperone. He has only seen a Polish production of Mamma Mia! while on exchange in Warsaw, so he was excited getting to actually understand the plot this time around. For work, Jonathon Braun is the legal director at Migrant Workers Centre, a local non-profit offering free legal services to migrant workers. When he’s not learning choreography or representing clients, Jonathon loves getting overly competitive in board games or being outdoors hiking and skiing.
Seeley Brocklebank ENSEMBLE
Seeley was called to the bar in 2003 and figured that the best way to celebrate her 20th anniversary of being a lawyer was to audition for The Lawyer Show, which she has wanted to do for years. What a great decision that was! She loves ABBA and is thrilled to be a part of such a talented cast. When she is not busy practicing the art of singing and dancing at the same time, she is an adjudicator with the Review Division of WorkSafeBC.
Cobi Dayan
BILL AUSTIN
Cobi is thrilled to be back for his fifth Lawyer Show, having previously appeared in Urinetown, The Drowsy Chaperone, Grease, and Hairspray. Cobi caught the acting bug and had his first foray into theatre over 20 years ago, right here at the Waterfront Theatre. You may also recognize Cobi from his performance as a Commercial Litigation Partner at Miller Thomson LLP. Cobi wants to thank everyone who made this year’s production possible and to Mel, Aviva and Shai for all their love and support!

Over 25 years later, she is 1 part lawyer, 1 part wife and mother to 1 husband, 1 child, and 2 dogs. She is currently the 1st Vice President of the Law Society of British Columbia and when she is not working and volunteering, she finds a bit of time to squeak out a few songs. She is thrilled to be part of the Lawyer’s Show, which has been on her bucket list since its inception.
Kate Dueck ENSEMBLE
Kate is an associate at Roper Greyell LLP. In her free time she escapes to her cabin, hangs out with her cats, and listens to Taylor Swift (often all three interests coincide – she’s nothing if not a multitasker). Kate is excited and grateful for the opportunity to be involved in her first Lawyer Show! Thank you to Roper Greyell, friends, and family for the enthusiastic support.
Miller Thomson is proud to support The 2023 Lawyer Show and its production of Mamma Mia!

Patrick is a member of Battle of the Bar Bands veterans Mr. Fancy Education (four out of five members of which are in band for this production of Mamma Mia). This is Patrick’s first Lawyer Show, and while it has been some time since Patrick played for a musical theatre production, his wife is quite possibly the world’s biggest ABBA fan. So, he is very familiar with these songs. He dedicates his performances to his wife Janele (the other member of Mr. Fancy Education).

This is Michael’s fourth in-person lawyer show and he has previously appeared in Spamalot!, Grease and Hairspray. When not practising bass (which is quite often) he is practising employment law at HHBG Lawyers in Vancouver.
