Preface

Why Germany?

The most frequently asked question through the exhibition Organ Mix was, why this show should

be a Korean - German exhibition in Korea? Eleven conceptual works by Korean, German and foreign artists who have studied and lived in Germany and also who are currently living and working

in Germany have presented their works, but this is not an appropriate answer to that question.

Foreign artists in a group show get no attention in Germany and even more, if only German artists are invited in a show, it would rather arouse scepticism among the general public. We could here observe the characteristics that the European countries are likely to share the philosophy of a

religion, political structure and similar social conditions. So, we would rather focus on the concept of works than nationlity or different ethnicitical backgrounds.

Then, what does it mean Organ Mix? This is rather a name of some pop music groups, nor is a

professional medical terminology. The word “Organ” is used mainly in two different ways, as a 7

in context of organ transplantation and often is a definition for departments of government of communities. Again, the community could be interpreted in many ways. It could be addressed

like the sociopolitically-oriented Swiss, which exists as the federal constitution system, the melting pot immigrant society of the United States or the antagonism between Walloons and Flemings in Belgium. In a new installment of the Community, it has to go through the procedure of

immigration, identification issue, cooperation and as well as to be in a state of denial. There are no real differences.

Organ Transplant

Organ Transplant is the moving of an organ from one body to another, or from a donor site on the patients own body, for the purpose of replacing the recipient’s damaged or absent organ. The emerging field of regenerative medicine may soon allow organs to be re-grown from the patients own cell (Wikipedia)

A new relationship between the donor and the recipient are formed over a long period of time and may possibly lead to recipient’s immune system rejecting or tolerance. Interestingly, the transplanted organ is not only enhanced recovery of patients, but also years after successful transplantation could encounter the social and psychological improvement of of patients.

Migration, Europe and the artists

By the end of World War II, central European countries significantly dependent on foreign labor

force due to fast industrialization. Although the number of immigrants is no longer dramatically

increased in recent years into major cities, but still modest numbers of immigrants are moving into central Erurope. Art and culture scene is not much different from the regular immigrants. Foreign artists are also continue to settle in the cities like London, Paris, and into Berlin.

One of a motivation of artists to immigrate those cities seems to be that they are lookinf for a visions of utopia. Philosopher and media theoretician, Boris Groys has defined in Lettre, Autumn issues

2009, that „The utopia is not a Utopian place, it’s a Utopian ideal“ (Utopie ist kein Ort, sie ist Utopie, sie ist utopisch). In this sense, artists are looking for a space, where enables you a personal utopia.

In this context, between the organ transplantation and the migration have a lot in common such as pursue a utopian notion.

Transformation of Organ Mix

One just could overlook at the work of Rita McBride <General Marks>, which is installed on the 1st

floor of the glass wall. It is like, we are almost not aware of attached symbols and ads on public or tour buses. When we travel other cities or abroad, often we are dumped in a bus with symbolic significance such as the logo and are taken to be exposed to another cultural community. For

example, a group of Korean tourists traveled by bus, which is provides by a German tour company XY with logo or something similar, are stopped at the Oktoberfest in Munich today and the following day they visit s Milan Cathedral, the Castello Sforzesc. In contrast, locals recognized the bus as a visual expression of cultural signs from somewhere.

Vera Lossau´s works are connected to the difference in anthropological concept of culture and history, as well as a variety of interpretation methods and deconstructive perspectives. These

attitudes are not only found in her work, but also in her private life. For example, a huge Islamic

decorative light is installed just above her bathtub and one cannot hardly avoid hitting the lamp

when one tries to get out of the bathtub. The lamp does not fulfill its purpose. It exists independently of any perception of object. In her work <Black and Blues>, which is made out of translucent paper,

have demished its durability and practicality of tiles and instead associated aspects of a fragility and a subjective narration. <Dead Drop> means a dead letter box and some figures, which she used it as a model, have been found in an ancient ruin in Pompeii. She transfers the decorative details from

historical buildings into the sculpture. For example, Medusa’s painful and grotesquely myth images has turned into a golden abstract sculpture. She calls this constructive nihilism.

With the help of microscope and the projector we could see the decay procedure of the various 9

steps from bacteria which is allowing real time processing of all images across all screens. In order to understand the work P.O.L. ART by Sabine Kacunko, we have to understand the specific meaning of the bacteria that is given by her. Bacteria are not recognizable at all times without using a

microscope, but exist beyond life and death, myth, religion, history and environmental information.

At the same time magnified images of bacteria express the sensual animated conversation over a

long time of period. On one hand the bacteria associated with chromosome destruction and on the other hand it attaches to another life-cycle. These transient effects prevail is termed the transient surface into a sense of Déjà Vu.

To understand the importance of the work <Epiphora> by Yunchul Kim, a good deal of research work has to bedone.

Epiphora (abnormal overflow or flooding) is overflow of tears onto the face. A clinical sign or

condition that constitutes insufficient tear film drainage from the eyes in that tears will drain down the face rather than through the nasolacrimal system. (Wikipedia)

After reading the following explanation of Epiphora from the Wikipedia and researchs, I caught a glimpse of that. During building up his work, unlike the usual exhibition installation, he has

created a kind of science laboratory with his assistants and his highly sophisticated gear units. He has placed a magnetic fluid in the space, glass, copper number, unknown liquid, tube, computer,

various objects in his own order. After he finished the installation, his pre <Epiphora> looks similar to an architectural plan and a beautiful drawing. Next to the drawings alike laboratory space,

non descriptable objects are installed on the walls and the ceiling. In the middle of the ceiling is hung a irregular, but a dynamic moving objects which looks similar to a heart. This is connected

to glass tubes on the wall. The thick black liquid in glasses is moving in an irregular motion, shape and time. Transparent glass material, multiple layers of copper, randomly moving magnetic fluid and see through computer look as if they will resemble a faceless human. In the classical sense,

the creation of human being belongs to God, but it has happnend by Yunchul Kim for art sake. If a

man is genetically engineered in a science laboratory or the Frankenstein from Hollywood, the work <Epiphora> throws questions to doubts on preconceived limits.

The first impression of works <War of sisters> and <Village of dogs> by Seongwon Won was “funny”, but my impression regarding her work turns gradually into questions. Trees in different tasks work as a sign system. Shacks, fairy tale castle, whale, dog, girls, dolls are hidden somewhere or just

being presented in pictures as fragmentes. The complexity of the each fragments and the use of

symbolic language of her work series “Tomorrow” lead to endless questions. The combination of her

experience in the past, elements of fantasy and wishes are carried out the fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

This reminds me of the movie “The Wizard of Oz”. The Dorothy´s dog Toto pulled the curtain open

and they reveled that the man behind the curtain might be the wizard. The Wizard tries to convince the group of Dorothy in his own way, but what is the true identity of the wizard of oz? At this point, one should pay attention to phenomenon of the Wizard of Oz itself rather than what is necessarily

true. If so, a virtual reality could be to generate and manifest unique kinds of own truth. An utopia

of the abandoned dogs in the “Village of dogs” and the militant settings in the “War of sisters” are all seeking to truth as subjectivity.

Daily tragedies and comedies of marginalized groups, which overlooked often by lack of recognition of their cultural and socio-political systems, seem to play a central role in the work of Danica Dakić and she transfers these into the media of film, video, sound installation and photography. The

<First Shot>, her latest work, was shot on the first day of light test on Isola Bella in Bosnian Pazarić.

The spontaneous performance of a woman and a man with Down syndrome has occurred during the light test. In front of the Isola Bella wallpaper try those two in masks sought to develop a

non-verbal communicative gesture. (Zuber & Cie 1843). They were portraying the story with facial expressions, hands movement, strange sounds, a feeling of resistance (e.g., repression) and denial

of affection. It could be argued about the language, civilization, culture and race toward ideology

in various circumstances, but the understanding of fundamental ideas can enter the transcendent consciousness. Sometimes coincidence seems more dramatic than a story book.

What can you do when you have to be a man?

These are the part of the <Auto Center Drive> by Bjørn Melhus, is a German media artist of

Norwegian ancestry. He used the repetition of dialogue by popular television series. So, what he

will indicate us with it? What are the differences and perception of repetition and more questions

come to mind about repetition. The part of dialogues from television series belongs to past in the

sense of time and this past is merged with present in the form of repeatation in his work. Not only

the the generative aspects of repetition is distinguished for his work, but also to theories about the

consequences of American pop and culture used. However, character names are consequently from

English speaking countries, such as Jimmy, Jenny, Big Jim, Dorothy and U-man. His work focuses on the most significant aspects of U.S. cultural imperialism in the current era and the past, including

the culture of consumerism. His provoking but humerous reflection on those phenomena has been profoundly transformed in his film.

Sound and space enter into a mystic alliance in Bai Kyoung Lee´s <Repeated Freedom> interactive

installation, which consists of wooden hexagon, three monitors, sixteen speakers into the six sides and 230 cm high, creating an inviting tower, via a random generator, confronts those who enter

with three installed cameras under the ceiling. The wooden hexahedron is as a building rather a bit too small and as a furniture is a way too big, In the video a woman and a man are trying to create a dynamic movement what they consider an expression of freedom in a box of 150 cm by 150 cm. As

time passed, the various attempts to find the most free movement within the space turns out to be grotesque. The elegant glossy black sculpture might be a metaphor for a big and shiny city life. In

the <Repeated Freedom>, Bei Kyoung Lee blends the silent, but hard-hitting social criticism of the of a modern society together, which are ruled by uniformity and endless repetition of the daily rituals

Approximately 1,500cm by 530cm of the huge wall is filled with the large-scale photo works <Don’t

be left behind> by Klaus Mettig. His photographic language is used to reveal the wide range of socio and political contexts, including the fields of urban development and as well as vandalism. For the series of <Don’t be left behind> he has traveled through numerous countries and cities since 1973

such as Dubai, Delhi, Shanghai and New York, where so-called a process of modernization took place.

They have destroyed nature and most of the “old” or “traditional” architecture and instead produce

a big field of trash with largest shopping malls, tallest towers. These are haunted by a photographic images by Klaus Mettig who has eyes of a poet.

Apart from the problems of a genuine freedom and an uncontrolled urbanisation process in modern cities by the <Repeated Freedom>” and the <Don’t be left behind> gives Hee-Seon Kim’s “Taste of

memory” a kind of warm feeling. The hight of the ceiling is relatively low and one wall is painted in

yellow. In the middle of different shapes of dining tables were installed the monitors which show the animation like cooking video. One of the difficulties of the video art presentation is that their

appearance is a bit simple and dry. Hee-Seon Kim blows away these concerns with this installation.

Combining the furniture, video and sounds might sounds not difficult, but in fact this is not an easy Déjà Vu. The symbolic meaning of a dining table and as well as the act of cooking are too close to

real life and it makes difficult to access to a new approach. Nevertheless, she is succeeded to transfer things in daily lives and the fundamental cultural differences into the language of video art.

It is often that the personal character of an artist and works resemble together, but Moonho Lee

does not belong to this category. Unlike his easy going appearance, his models works are finished

with the technical perfection and the recreated detail with great sophistication. One could get the

impression that he might be a freak after get confronted with the work. In the <Xpace Modell> you

cannot find any trail of being used by people and only a strange light dominates the atmosphere of 13

the modell. Initially, it looks like that two public toilets are connected through a mirror that installed on the wall. In fact, the mirror is an empty space. So that no one would recognize when one does

not simply walk on the opposite side. Visitors are staring at the small door or just walk around the model to figure out the truth when they have realized that the mirror is an empty space. Jacques Lacan delivered at the 16th International Congress of Psychoanalysis, Zurich, July 17, 1949. “....

therefore, to regard the function of the mirror-stage as a particular case of the function of the imago, which is to establish a relation between the organism and its reality--or, as they say, between the

Innenwelt and the Umwelt.” So the <Xpace Modell> is not just a model of an object with a mirror,

but it gives you the opportunity that it able to build a relationship between the inner world and the environment.

“Organ mix” is not only regarded as an exhibition of Korean, German, foreign artists, but it should be understood as an attempt to graft the social, political and cultural issues between central

Europe and Korea. As much the nationality of the participants, backgrounds, thoughts, method of

interpretations are varies, access to true open dialogue between the work and the visitors should be takeen place.

서문

왜 독일인가? Warum Deutschland?

Organ Mix 전시 중 가장 자주 받는 질문 중에 하나는 왜 굳이 한독일교류전인가 하는 것이었다. 11명의 참여 작가 중 6명은 현재 독일에서 활동하는 외국인, 독일인이며, 한국 작가는 독일유학파이긴 하지만 이것이 질문에 대한 적절한 대답은 아닐 것이다. 독일은 단체전에 외국인 참가는 당연하며 독일인만 전시할 경우 특별한 의도가 있는지 질문받게 된다. 여기서 유럽공동체가 가지고 있는 지역적 특성, 종교, 정치적인 유대감, 유사한 사회적인 여건을 잘 관찰 할 수 있다. 문화, 통상, 지리적 여건 등 어떠한 의미에서건 통과적인 위치에 있는 독일로서는 위와 같은 성격의 질문은 이슈화되기 어렵다. 지역적 당위성 여부보다는 주제에 초점을 맞추는 것이 전시의 전반적 이해에 도움이 되지 않을까 싶다. 그렇다면 전시제목인 오르간 믹스 (Organ Mix)는 어떤 의미로 받아들여야 할까. 오르간 믹스는 어떤 팝 그룹의 음반 앨범 이름도 아니고 전문적 의학용어는 더더욱 아니다. 어찌 되었든 독어로 “장기”를 “Organ”이라 하고 주로 장기이식과 관련해 사용되는 경우가 보편적이지만, 정치 혹은 공동체의 한 부서 혹은 산하 기관이라는 의미로도 쓰인다. 직역하자면 오르간 믹스는 장기 혹은 공동체가 섞여 있다는 뜻이된다. 공동체라는 것은 또 15

다시 여러 방법으로 해석할 수 있는데 이것은 시기와 사회, 정치적인 요소에 따라 스위스처럼 병렬적인 구조를 가질 수도 있고, 미국처럼 융화와 병렬이 가능할 수도 있고 벨기에의 플라망족과 왈론족의 대립으로 말미암은 사회적 혼돈을 가져올 수도 있다. 어찌 되었든 새로운 공동체가 형성되기까지는 이동, 이식, 인식, 조화, 거부 등 복잡다단한 과정은 거치게 되며 이는 장기 이식과 별다르지 않다.

장기 이식 (Organ Transplant) 어떤 조직 또는 장기의 파손된 기능을 대체할 목적으로 원래 존재하는 장소에서 다른 장소로 조직 또는 장기를 옮기는 것이다. (위키백과) 장기 이식자와 이식된 장기와의 새로운 관계가 성립되는 과정에서 단기 혹은 장기적으로 거부반응을 일으킬 수도 있고 별 무리 없이 적응하여 상호 유동적인 관계가 형성될 수도 있다. 흥미로운 점은 이식된 장기가 부분적 활동 재기에 그치지 않고 장기이식 후에 성격 변화가 올 수 있다고 한다.

이민(Migration), 유럽 그리고 예술인 세계 2차대전 이후 중앙 유럽은 공업, 산업의 급진적인 발전으로 말미암아 오랫동안 외국인 노동력에 의존해 왔다. 근래 들어 유입자 수사 점차 감소하고 있으나 아직도 대도시를 중심으로 꾸준히 이민자 행렬은 이어지고 있다. 문화 예술 분야에 있어서도 크게 다르지 않다. 외국인 예술가들이 지속적으로 런던, 파리 그리고 최근 들어서는 베를린 같은 대도시로 이주하고 있다. 다른 이민자들과 다른 점이라면 이들은 경제적인 동기보다는 예술적 이상장소 (유토피아)를 찾아 이동한다는 점일 것이다. 철학자 및 미디어 이론가인 보리스 그로이스 (Boris Groys)는 2009년 가을호 레트르 Lettre 와의 한 인터뷰에서 유토피아를 “유토피아 장소가 아니다, 그건 유토피아는 이상적이라는 거지” (Utopie ist kein Ort, sie ist Utopie, sie ist utopisch)라고 정의했다. 이런 의미에서 볼 때 예술가들은 유토피아를 찾는다기보다는 자아적 유토피아를 가능하게 하는 공간을 구한다는 것이 적절한 해석이 아닐까 싶다. 이런 맥락에서 볼 때 장기이식과 이민은 이상 추구라는 많은 공통점을 가지고 있다고 볼 수 있다.

Organ Mix Transformation

전시장 1층 정면유리 벽에 설치된 리타 맥브라이드 (Rita McBride)의 작품 <General Marks>는 자칫 작품인지 모르고 넘어갈 수가 있다. 마치 공용버스나 관광버스에 부착된 광고 혹은 로고를 거의 인식하지 못하는 것처럼 말이다. 타지 혹은 외국 여행 중 우리는 로고의 상징적 의미에 포장된 버스에 실려 또 다른 문화 공동체를 접하게 된다. 가령 한국 단체 관광객이 유럽여행시 독일 관광회사 XY의 광고문구가 달린 버스로 하루는 뮌헨의 옥토버페스트에 참가 했다가 다음 날은 밀라노의 대성당으로 옮겨 가는 것처럼 말이다. 반대로 현지인에게는 관광객과 버스는 일종의 타 문화 공동체로 인식된다. 베라 로사우 (Vera Lossau)는 작업을 통해 보편적으로 이해되는 역사관과 문화 이해에 질문을 던지는 동시에 다양한 분석적, 해체적 관점을 제시한다. 그녀의 이러한 태도는 작업뿐만 아니라 사생활에서 서도 찾아볼 수가 있다. 가령 이슬람계에서 사용되는 거대한 장식용 전등이 욕실 욕조 위에 일어서면 머리로 칠 수밖에 없는 위치에 달려있다. 불을 밝히는 전등의 원래 목적은 사라지고 오브제로서의 불편함과 애매모호함으로만 존재할 뿐이다. 반투명 기름종이로 만들어진 작업 <Black and Blues>에서는 타일 내구성과 실용성은 사라지고 대신 섬세함과 나레티브한 면이 확대된다. 죽은 편지 상자를 의미하는 <Dead Drop>은 폼페이Pompeii에서 발견된 고고학적,

역사적 건축물의 장식적인 세부 사항을 원소적인 조각으로 전환해 보여준다. 가령 메두사의 고통스럽고, 그로테스크한 신화적 의미를 배출하고 가벼운 재료와 황금색의 추상적 조형물로 전환시킨 것처럼 말이다. 그녀는 이것을 <건설적 허무주의 constructive nihilism>라 부른다.

박테리아를 현미경과 프로젝터의 도움으로 분해, 부패와 파괴의 다양한 단계를 실시간 동영상 이미지를 보여 주는 사비네 카충코 (Sabine Kacunko)의 P.O.L. ART를 이해하기 위해서는 그녀가 부여한 박테리아에 대한 의미에 대한 이해가 요구된다. 박테리아는 사람의 눈으로는 인식하지 못할 정도로 미세하지만, 그 안에 삶과 죽음을 떠나 신화, 종교, 역사, 환경적 정보가 내포되어 있다. 동시에 확대된 박테리아 영상이 주는 감각적인 표현은 마치 장시간에 걸쳐 움직이는 회화를 보는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 이는 박테리아의 통상적인 파괴적 해석과 죽음과 동시에 삶과 추상적인 영상의 묘한 데자뷰가 아닐까한다. 김윤철 (Yunchul Kim)의 작업명 <Epiphora> (abnormal overflow 이상범람)의 뜻을 알기 위해 우선 인터넷을 뒤져야 했다.

위키백과뿐만 아니라 여러 곳의 설명서를 읽고 난 후에 김윤철 작가의 작품을 다시 대하니 어렴풋이 감이 잡히는 것 같았다. 전시 설치기간 내 작가는 여느 전시설치장과는 달리 어시스턴트들과 과학연구소 같은 장면을 제공했다. 설치가 끝나고 전시장 한 공간에 사용했던 자석 액체, 유리관, 수많은 구리선, 이름 모를 액체, 시험관, 컴퓨터 등 다양한 물체들이 그대로 놓아두었는데 이것은 흡사 설계도와 아름다운 드로잉을 조형화시켜 논 듯했다. 드로잉 같은 실험실 옆 다음 공간에는 정체 모를 물체들이 벽과 천정에 설치되어 있다. 공간 중간 정도에 천정과 연결되어 있는 마치 생명체처럼 불규칙하면서도 역동적으로 움직이는 심장과 같은 물체가 벽에 정렬된 유리관들과 연결되어 있다. 유리관의 검은 액체는 각기 불규칙한 속도로 움직이고 있다. 유리라는 투시적 재료, 여러 겹의 구리선, 불규칙적으로 움직이는 자석 액체, 내장구조가 훤히 들어다 보이는 컴퓨터는 마치 얼굴이 없는 인간을 연상케 한다. 타부로 여겨지는 생명창조적인 행위, 혹 그것이 복재라는 과학적 방법이건, 할리우드 식 프랑큰슈타인 이건 간에 Epiphora는 선입견적인 한계에 도전과 의문을 던져 보는 것이 아닌가 싶다. 원성원 (Seoungwon Won)의 <자매들의 전쟁>과 <강아지의 마을>이란 제목의 두 작품에서 받은 첫인상은 “ 재밌다” 였다. 그런데 이 재밌다는 것이 점차 의문으로 변형되기 시작했다. 두 작업에서 완연히 다른 의미로

해석된 나무, 허술한 집, 동화에 나올 법한 성, 고래, 똥개, 인형 등이 마치 숨은 그림 찾기처럼 작업 구석구석에 숨어 있다. 작업 전체적인 첫인상이라 할 수 있는 나레티브한 요소와 그 뒤에 숨겨진 상징언어가 묘하게 복합되어 작업시리즈 <내일>이라는 명제에 질문을 던지게 된다. 작가가 실제로 겪은 경험담과 희망과 상상이라는 요소가 결합되어 마치 동화와같은 형식을 취한다. 영화 “오즈의 마법사” (The Wizard of Oz)에서 마법사의 정체는 도로시의 강아지 토토가 커튼을 벗겨 내는 데서 시작되는데 여기서 과연 진실이라는 것은 무엇일까. 도로시 일행은 자칭 오즈의 마법사에게 진실 여부를 밝히라고 재촉하는데 그는 특유의 논법으로 일행을 설득시킨다. 사실의 진실 여부를 논하기보다는 현상 자체에도 주목하자는 것이다. 그렇다면 가상적인 현상 또한 자기만의 진실을 보유하는 것은 아닐까. <강아지의 마을> 에서 버려진 개들의 유토피아도, <자매들의 전쟁>의 전투적 설정도 지극히 주관적인 진실을 추구하는 것이 아닐까 싶다. 다니사 다키치 (Danica Dakić)는 비극과 희극이 공존하는 일상, 사회, 정치적으로 소외된 집단을 영화, 사진, 비디오, 음향 설치, 사진을 통해 보여 주고 있다. <First Shot>은 그녀의 최신작이며, 보스니아 Pazari의 한 장애 보호소에서 다른 작품을 촬영하려고 라이트 테스트를 하는 도중 우연히 연출된 상황이라고 한다. 대화 없이 이솔라 벨라 벽지 (Zuber & Cie 1843) 앞에서 가면으로 얼굴이 가려진 다운 증후군 장애인 둘이 무언극을 시도한다. 그들은 이상한 소리와 얼굴 표정과 몸의 자세를 통해 저항(억압) 애정의 거부의 완벽한 상황을 표연한다. 언어, 문명, 문화, 인종을 향한 이념 논쟁은 각기 다르지만, 근본적인 것에 대한 이해는 모든것을 초월해 전해질 수 있음을 관찰 할 수 있다. 가끔은 우연이 필연보다 더 극적인 듯하다.

현대화라는 이름으로 이루어지는 각종 파괴 행위를 이미지로 동결한다. 자연과 전통적인 건축물을 낡았다거나 비현대적이라는 이유로 파괴하며 대신에 대형 쓰레기장과 최대의 쇼핑 몰, 대형건물을 짓는 데만 열을 올리고 있다. 작가는 이를 사진을 통해 그만의 특유한 시인의 눈으로 재조명했다. 대도시 현대화의 문제점을 지적한 <반복되는 자유>나 <Don’t be left behind>와는 달리 음식을 주제로 한 김희선 (Hee-sun Kim)의 <맛의 기억>은 휑한 도시에 마치 단비를 뿌려 주는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 모양새가 하나같이 다른 식탁들이 천정이 낮고, 노란색 벽의 공간에 자리를 잡고 있다. 식탁 중앙에 설치된 모니터에서 애니메이션 형식의 음식 만들기 비디오작업이 돌아간다. 비디오설치작업의 어려움 중 하나는 프레젠테이션인데 김희선 작가는 < 맛의 기억>을 통해 상존하는 비디오 설치가 주는 건조함을 단 한 방에 날려 버린다. 생활용 가구와 영상의 접목은 텔레비전이 필연 같지만, 시각 설치예술 분야적인 입장에서는 그리 쉬운 데쟈뷰 (Déjà Vu)는 아니다. 식탁이

가지는 상징적인 의미로 그렇거니와 음식을 만드는 것 또한 실생활에 너무 밀착되어 새로운 방법적 접근을 어렵게 한다. 그럼에도, 불고하고 김희선 작가는 음식을 통해 주관적이고도 근본적인 문화차이점을 영상 언어로 구현했다. 표면적인 이미지에 한정되지만, 작가 대부분과 작품은 외형상 비슷한 면이 많다. 이러한 카테고리에 맞지 않는 이 중에 이문호 (Moonho Lee) 를 들 수 있다. 온유해 보이는 그의 외형과는 달리 그의 모델작업 시리즈를 보면 작업의 기술적 완벽함과 치밀하게 재현된 디테일 등 혹시 성격적 장애가 있지 않을까라는 느낌마저 주게 한다. <Xpace Modell>에서는 사람이 사용하고 간 흔적을 찾아볼 수 없고 차고 묘한 분위기의 불빛만이 존재한다. 두 개 같은 구조의 공용화장실이 벽 거울을 중심으로 연결되어 있는 것 처럼 보인다. 거울은 실제로는 빈 벽이라 반대편에 사람이 지나가지 않는 이상 사실 여부를 알 수 없다. 관객은 거울이 아니라 빈 벽임을 알았을 때 모델의 열린 작은 문을 통해 비밀을 알아내려는 듯 뚫어지게 보기도 하고, 작업 주위를 빙빙 돌며 관찰하기도 한다. 1949 년 취리히 제16회 정신 분석학 국제 의회에서 자크 라캉 Jacques Lacan은 “...따라서 거울 단계의 기능은 사람의 이미지를 기능의 특정 사건으로서 유기체와 현실 사이 혹은 내부세계와 주위환경의 관계를 구축하는 것이다.” 이렇게 볼 때 <Xpace Modell>은 거울이 설치된 단순한 모델이 아닌 관객에게 내부세계와 주위환경의 관계를 구축하는 할 수 있게 하는 기회의 장소라는 표현이 적절할 것이다. <오르간 믹스>는 단순히 한, 독, 외국작가의 전시가 아닌 중앙 유럽의 사회, 정치, 문화적 흐름을 한국의 그것과의 접목 시도라는 것이 적절할 것이다. 참여 작가의 출신국가, 성장배경, 사고 범위, 접근방법, 의도가 다양한 만큼 작품과의 대화와 해석도 지극히 주관적이고 열린 그것이었으면 한다. © 정미, 독일, 2009

Yunchul Kim 한국에서 작곡을 공부하고, 독일로 건너가 쾰른 미디어아트 아카데미에서 미디어아트를 전공한 김윤철은 조각적인 요소와 사운드 작업을 고유의 언어로 표현해 내면서 유럽 미디어아트 계에서 주목 받았다. 이번 전시에 소개된 <Epiphora>는 5개의 작업으로 이루어진 물질로 실현된 하나의 상상적 기관으로써, 마치 유기체처럼 자기의 생명력을 가지고 있다. 이상범람 (abnormal overflow)이라는 작품 제목이 의미하는 바처럼 작품은 ‘에피포라’라는 이상징후들을 만들어내고, 발현된 징후는 다시 스스로에 의해 진단된다. 작가는 관람자가 상징적이거나 은유적인 것 혹은 기능에 구속되지 않고 신체적 공명을 경험할 수 있도록 ‘진단’의 차원에서 작품을 감상하기를 바란다. 김윤철은 1970년 서울 출생으로 현재 쾰른에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다. 서울 추계예술대학 작곡과를 졸업하고 쾰른 미디어 아트 대학교를 졸업하였다. 바드엠스 Bad Ems에 있는 슐로스 발모랄 Schloß Balmoral 에서 레지던시를 했으며, 2004년 노르트하인-베스트팔렌의 독일 미디어아트에서 주목 받는 영 아티스트로 선정되었다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕 디지털 살롱, 아트 쾰른, 베를린 트렌스 미디알레, 린츠의 아르스일렉트로니카를 비롯하여 세계적인 미디어아트 페스티벌같은 전시에서 볼 수 있다.

Beikyoung Lee 이배경의 <반복되는 자유(Repeated Freedom)>는 거대한 도시공간에 갇혀 반복적인 삶을 살아가면서 그 안에 서 자유를 누리고 있다고 착각하는 현대인의 삶을 비유적으로 표현하면서 일정 기간을 단위로 반복되는 자유가 과연 진정한 자유일까 하는 질문을 던지고 있다. 지금껏 해오던 일관된 방식의 영상 투사에서 조각을 전공한 작 가의 전력이 자연스럽게 발휘되어 독립된 하나의 조형물로서의 새로운 인터랙티브 비디오 설치를 보여주고자 한 의미 있는 시도이며, 평소 음악을 미술만큼 혹은 그 이상으로 위대한 예술장르로 생각하는 작가에게 청각적인 요 소를 시각적인 요소와 대등한 위치로 여겨 한 작품 안에 녹여놓은 야심 찬 시도이기도 하다.

Moonho Lee 이문호가 작은 모델로 만든 스튜디오, 아파트, 공공화장실 등의 빈 공간들은 보는 이로 하여 금 착각을 유발할 만큼 정교하게 지어졌다. 실제 공간과 다른 점이 있다면 개개인의 소지품이 나 어떠한 종류의 흔적도 찾아볼 수는 없다는 것이다. 과거를 읽을 수도, 관련 인물의 흔적도 찾아볼 수 없는 그의 공간은 묘한 흡입력으로 우리의 상상력과 사고를 자극한다.그의 빈 공간 은 단순한 공간의 재현이 아닌 우리에게 추상적 사고를 할 수 있게 하는 기회의 장소라는 표현 이 적절할 것이다.

Hee-Seon Kim 김희선은 홍익대학교 회화과를 졸업하고 뒤셀도르프 아카데미 마스터 과정 및 쾰른 미디어아트 대학원을 마치고 한국과 독일을 오가며 비디오/사운드 영상설치와 인터렉티브 멀티미디어 분야를 접목시키는 작업에 몰두하고 있다. <맛의 기억>은 11명의 다양한 국적의 친구들에게 특별한 메뉴의 요리를 부탁하면서, 각자 나름대로의 상상력을 발휘해서 즉흥적으로 이야기를 만들어가도록 한 다음, 그 요리 과정을 애니메이션 기법으로 촬영하였다. 전시장에는 서로가 만든 음식을 함께 먹으며 대화하는 장면의 영상과, 모니터가 마치 접시처럼 5개의 식탁 가운데에 설치되었다. 이 작품을 통해 김희선은 요리와 음식을 함께 나누는 것이 우리 사회 안에서 중요한 커뮤니케이션의 일부이며, 그것은 또한 우리 문화에 대한 개인적인 표현이라는 점을 암시적으로 말하고 있다. 매 작업마다 일상에서 친근한 소재를 끌어내 다양한 이야기를 풀어내는 김희선 특유의 작업스타일은 많은 주목을 받았으며, 독일 칼스루에 미디어아트상(ZKM), 쾰른 여성작가상(KHM). 만하임에서 주최한 Hector 예술상 등을 수상하였고, 독일, 폴란드 슬로베니아 등에 초청되어 작품을 선보이고 있다. 김희선은 홍익대학교 회화과를 졸업 후 독일 뒤셀도르프 아카데미 마스터 과정과 퀼른 미디어아트 대학원을 마치고 한국과 독일에서 작업 활동을 하고 있으며, 현 영남대학교 미술학부 조교수로 재직 중이다. 대표적으로 2001년 ZKM 국제미디어 아트상 Top 50지명, 2002년 독일의 노르드라인 베스트팔렌주(NRW) 젊은 미디어 작가상 수상, 2003년 Hector 예술상 2위, KHM 여성작가 장학금 등을 수상하였다. 그녀의 작품은 독일 에센 폴크방 미술관, 비스바덴 쿤스트페어라인, 만하임 미술관, 오스트리아 린즈 시립미술관 등 그 외 각종 국제전시와 다수의 국제미디어아트페스티벌에 참여 하였으며, 국내에서 1997년 광주비엔날레 특별전 1999서울시립미술관의 “도시와 영상 전”등을 시작으로 지금까지 활발한 전시활동을 보여주고 있다. 그녀의 작업은 비디오/사운드 영상설치와 인터랙티브 멀티미디어분야를 접목시키는 작업에 몰두하고 있다.
