Support your community VOLUNTEER What better way to support your community than through volunteerism! The Town of Superior offers a variety of volunteer opportunities: parks and trails cleanup projects, formal programs like Snow Busters and the Ride Autrey Project, Town events support, and Advisory Group projects and programs. The opportunities are bountiful, fun and fulfilling. For more information, please visit superiorrec.com.

ADVISORY GROUPS VOLUNTEERS WITH A VOICE! Town Advisory Groups are simply groups of residents who come together to research and discuss pertinent items to provide information and recommendations to the Board of Trustees. These groups are instrumental in shaping the community of Superior. Community members interested in serving on an Advisory Group are appointed by the Town Board. Find out more and submit an application on the Town’s Advisory Group webpage. superiorcolorado.gov/boards-committees/ boards-and-committees-new-option-2

CULTURAL ARTS

SUPERIOR EN PLEIN AIR ART EXHIBIT

The Town of Superior Cultural Arts and Public Spaces (CAPS) Advisory Committee brings a wide range of creativity to the community in the form of small events, workshops and the selection of artworks for the public art collection. Check out the Cultural Arts webpage for more information at superiorcolorado.gov. Artwork: Jeanne Hougen, "Pond Reflections", Oil on canvas, 2021

Check out the beautiful art exhibit at the Superior Community Center! Plein air painting, the act of painting outdoors, was a CAPS event in the fall of 2021 and the finished paintings are now on display. The works of twelve professional artists and several youth string-art paintings were all inspired by the picturesque surroundings at Purple Park. The exhibit will be up through August 2022. FREE Art Therapy Program The CAPS Committee has partnered with the Superior Chamber of Commerce to offer a FREE art therapy program to current or displaced Superior and Louisville residents who were impacted by the Marshall Fire. Sessions will take place at the Superior Chamber of Commerce Business Assistance Center at 300 Center Drive, Superior, CO 80027. Each session will be 90-minutes. Please visit superiorchamber.com/ art-therapy-program-marshall-fire/ for more information and to sign up! This program was made possible due to a generous corporate sponsorship from Friday Health Plans, a health insurance company based in Denver. Summer 2022 Recreation Guide

Rising from the Ashes: After the Fire

How Local Businesses in Superior are Recovering from the Marshall Fire

Three months after the Marshall Fire, Superior’s local businesses are doing their best to stage a comeback. Some have been hit harder than others, but all have experienced the outpouring care and support of the surrounding community. Mike Perry, Chief Financial Officer of the Sport Stable facility, was out of town when the fire hit his business. Luckily, two members of the staff were able to enter the building within just days of the fire ending and preserve all the ice rinks. Even then, the Sport Stable – a multi-sport facility that receives over a million visitors per year – had to reopen in phases due to its size and scale. As of today, nearly all amenities at the Sport Stable are back in business. The sports facility realizes that this has not been the case for all businesses in Superior, and is eager to pay it 4

forward to support others. "We would love to know how we can help those who have been impacted,” says Perry. “Through our various organizations, we'd love to find some way to help in whatever capacity we can.” Wayne Shellnutt, owner of beloved barbeque joint Wayne’s Smoke Shack, was another business to be hit by the fire. Not only was his restaurant equipment severely damaged, he and his wife’s home burnt to the ground. The fire, unfortunately, was just the beginning of his challenges. "People have no idea how long it takes to rebuild,” says Shellnutt, in reference to his ongoing battle with insurance claims. "Our whole goal is to get back open as soon as we can, but we can't do that without our partner -- the insurance company -- coming through.” Shellnutt points to the difficult fact that displacement of many Superior residents by the fire has made it hard for those same residents to return to support Superior’s

"We absolutely love being part of the Superior community. The entire community has been through so much over the past 2 years and our family, friends and neighbors have bonded together and raised each other up with kindness and compassion. The leadership from the Town of Superior has been critical in our recovery and continued success"

Michael James Keating, Synapse Physical Therapy

businesses. "Just to be able to bounce back from this, we all have to come back together -- we need help at a federal level, a county level, at a city level,” Shellnutt says. But even for the BBQ restaurant owner who is still missing 80% of the capital he needs to rebuild, hope is on the horizon. "We are gonna rise from the ashes -- we want our same crew to come back, stronger than ever. At this point, I'm operating on pure faith that the insurance company pays me back…because legally, they have to.” He adds, “we're really excited about the future -- we're not going to sit around and wallow -- we're taking this as an opportunity to come out stronger than ever."

“We are so grateful for the outpouring of support!” says Mendoza. “We continue to ask for the community to show support to our local businesses as they fight to recover from this disaster. Your buying power is the key to their resiliency and recovery."

Residents (and visitors) of Superior can learn more about Superior’s unique businesses and how they can help support them by visiting www.superior-business.org/news

For residents of Superior and greater Coloradoans alike, there are several ways to help. Social media is one great avenue for showing support: residents can visit the Superior businesses’ Facebook pages and leave encouraging comments. Ultimately, though, Economic Development Manager, Jill Mendoza says that the best way to help is through your patronage. Summer 2022 Recreation Guide

See the workshops below offered by Licensed Professional Counselor, Dawn King, MA, LPC, LAC, RYT.

MINDFUL SELF-COMPASSION

MSC teaches core principles that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness, care and understanding. If you are a beginner and would like to try out the sport but don’t have a paddle, come and check one out from the Superior Community Center. (Quantities are limited to first-come, first-served). Courts are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, and operate on an Open Play system. Please visit superiorrec.com for drop-in “Open Play" hours.

OPEN PLAY “Paddle Holder” SYSTEM When all courts are full and other players are waiting: All games will be played to 11, win by 1. Waiting players place a paddle for each player on the paddle rack. When a game finishes, players announce “Open Court”. The court is then vacated for the waiting players with paddles on the rack. When players move to the court to begin play, they have a 5-minute warmup period and then begin play to 11, and win by 1. Waiting players advance their paddles forward on the paddle holder and will play on the next available court. The process repeats as long as others are waiting to play.

group swim lesson

overview

The purpose of the Town of Superior Group Swim Lesson Program is to develop swimming competency, confidence and endurance in a safe and fun environment.

How Do I Enroll My Child?

The summer Group Swim Lesson Class Schedule can be found online at superiorrec.com. If necessary, please reference the “Which group swim lesson class is right for your child?” chart to assist in choosing the most appropriate class during registration. Please note that participants will be screened on the first day of class and possibly moved to a more appropriate level, if required. The online registration option at superiorrec.com provides the easiest way to register and the most accurate information on when classes are full, added or canceled. Registration is on a first-come, first-filled basis. Don’t wait! Classes fill quickly, and attending regularly without interruption is crucial for success.

How Can I Help My Child Succeed in Swim Lessons?

The first day of class, students’ skill levels will be tested to make sure they are in the appropriate classes. If it is determined after the session begins that your child needs to be placed into a different skill level for the session, please discuss with the on-site Swim Lesson Coordinator. If there is room in another class, we will make the transfer and the class roster will be updated. If we are unable to place your child into a different class for the session, you will need to go online and register for a future session or request a class refund or household credit. Each child progresses differently. Many swimmers need to enroll in the same level class for a minimum of two to three sessions. If your child is enrolled in a current ongoing session, and you want to register for a future session, it is highly recommended that you speak to your child’s instructor before registering. Your child’s instructor will know best what level to recommend. Doing this will also help prevent confusion or uncertainty down the road if it’s determined your child is not in the appropriate class. 28

superiorrec.com

Don’t wait if you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s lessons. The solutions are easiest when issues are addressed immediately. Talk with your child’s instructor or the Swim Lesson Coordinator: Cameron Rasmussen cameron.rasmussen@bvsd.org

Registration Helpful Hints

Be sure to verify at registration that your phone number and email address are accurate. Correct contact information is critical for proper notification due to cancellations, changes or waitlist enrollment opportunities. Registration closes at 5 PM the Wednesday before the session start date and 5 PM the Wednesday before Saturday session start date. If the desired class is full, add your child’s name to the waitlist. There may be cancellations before the start of the session due to low enrollment or a new class may be created and offered for existing waitlists. Class sizes are a minimum of three children and a maximum of five. Classes with only two children registered may be subject to cancellation and, with parent/guardian permission, child will be transferred to a different class time in the same session. Parent/guardian can also request a class refund or household credit.

What If…

My child is sick? Please be considerate of other participants. Do not bring your child to lessons if they do not feel well. There are no credits or make-up lessons for missed classes. Inclement weather? For any changes in schedules due to weather, call 303-381-2024. The phone greeting will be updated if changes occur. Makeup lessons will be held on Fridays, if weather permits.

Other Options?

Private swim lessons are available for all ages. To learn more, visit superiorrec.com.

IMPORTANT NOTES

• Parent/Tot requires adult participation in the pool. • Repetition of skills and levels is an important part of the learning process. • Parents are encouraged to estimate their child’s ability level as accurately as possible to ensure a positive experience for all swimmers. • If, on the first day of class, it is determined that your child is best suited for a different class level, we will do our best to accommodate your child and make the transfer. Levels 5/6 and 7/8 are combined levels. Please refer to the class description to assess if your child is ready for either of these levels. NOTE: Some children may want to participate in BOTH 5/6 or 7/8 and Flyers pre-team. Coach evaluation recommended. Level 7/8 is for swimmers who intend to join a swim team, as breaststroke/butterfly are emphasized in this level. Level 9/10 is for swimmers who want to continue to refine each of the four strokes and improve their endurance. Swimmers will also work on racing start progression flip turn progression, and continued drill work for all four strokes.
