NEW SECTION

On behalf of the Torque team, I’d like to make an apology to your arm muscles, as this is the heaviest and largest edition of Torque Magazine yet. Unlike our literally weightless digital editions, this September’s print magazine is a whopper on the scales thanks to it featuring a record 100 pages. Our first edition, way back in mid-2015, was a trim 142 grams. Now we’re on a trouser button-popping 400 grams. And those aren’t the only expanding figures this edition of Torque Magazine heralds. This latest mag, covering the distribution industry for fasteners, tools and related industries, is being the read by the most eyeballs of any Torque Magazine so far. Not only will it be appearing at our own Torque-Expo Coventry (which takes place 3-4 October, thanks for asking), but it will also have an extensive extended presence in the USA, including at Las Vegas’ International Fastener Expo (see page 92). That’s all in addition to our regular thousands of readers in the UK, Europe and around the world. If you are heading to our show at its new venue of Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, you’ll be greeted by our most diverse line-up of exhibitors yet, from household names and industry giants to up-and-coming brands. Truly delivering on the premise of fasteners, tools and related industries, our exhibitor line-up includes the cream of those sectors, allowing visitors access to them all in one time-saving hit, all under one roof. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ve got a new Building & Construction section starting on page 78. But that’s (more than) enough from me. Enjoy the mag, do some great business at the show and thanks for reading.

PLANES...

he aerospace sector is in line for a shake up as it readies for a revolution in electric and hybrid power. £343 million has been pledged by the UK government and industry to research and develop the burgeoning sector to “transform the future of civil aerospace” – with implications for suppliers to the aerospace sector. The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and UK

Research & Innovations (UKRI) are supporting the investment, which will be channelled towards 18 new research and technology projects, including the development of cleaner and greener hybrid aircraft. To support SMEs, £68 million of the funding will be made available to increase R&D opportunities, with £20 million to drive improvements in long-term productivity across the sector.

T

...trains...

...and automobiles

ales has placed an £800 million order for 148 trains, according to the BBC. 77 of the trains will be made by Spanish firm CAF – a preferred bidder to supply trains for Wales and the Borders rail franchise. 71 will be supplied by Swiss-headquartered Stadler. CAF will build its 77 units at its new facility at the Celtic Business Park in Newport, South Wales, which is scheduled for completion in Autumn 2018. The Newport facility is a crucial part of CAF’s plans to grow the UK side of its business. The factory will create 300 new jobs and boost the wider UK rail industry supply chain as the company plans to develop a ‘cluster’ of local and national companies to supply components for the manufacture of its trains. CAF is investing £30m to get the new factory up and running and will receive significant grant support from the Welsh Government’s Inward Investment Programme.

n welcome news for suppliers to the automotive sector, UK new car registrations rose in August, with the electric sector also growing. Year-on-year demand for new cars rose 23.1% in August, according to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). 94,094 new cars were registered in the month as the market responded to regulatory changes. Hybrid, plug-in and pure electric cars grew to a record of one in 12 people choosing one. Demand surged 88.7% and the sector accounted for 8% of the market, its highest ever level, as manufacturers invested to help deliver ultra-low and zero emission models to the market. As noted by EFDA President Dr Volker Lederer and Bulten respectively, electric and hybrid cars require more fasteners than standard combustion enginepowered vehicles.

Joinery products and tools win in long summer he prolonged streak of hot weather this summer grew sales for the tools and joinery products sectors. According to the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI), overall Q2 sales jumped a significant 16.9% over Q1 sales. Furthermore, Q2 2018 outperformed Q2 last year, up 7.2%.

T

KEY FINDINGS FROM BMBI INCLUDED:

n Timber & joinery products rose significantly, to 126.2 in June 2018 (116.7 in June 2017).

n Tools rose to 113.33 in June 2018 (109.9 in June 2017).

n Workwear & Safetywear fell to 95.7 in June 2018 (99.4 in June 2017).

n Ironmongery fell marginally to 123.9 in June 2018 (124.5 in June 2017).

Nationals such as Selco and Woodies, owned by Grafton, also profited during the long spell of warm weather. Grafton revenue increased 8.6% to £1.45 billion in the first half of 2018, with the impact of the very cold March and April overturned and more by the hot and dry May and June.

Grafton’s business in Ireland and the Netherlands also continued to perform well in the period. The BMBI stats are taken from around 80% of generalist builders merchants in Great Britain. They are compiled by GfK, BMF and MRA.

COVER PROFILE NORD-LOCK GROUP

Nord-Lock Group: Over 35-years of Bolting Expertise Nord-Lock Group is a pioneer in innovative bolting solutions, with advanced technologies spanning bolt securing, bolt tensioning, expansion bolts and expanding pivot pins. With decades of experience solving engineering challenges all over the world, the company continues to put its customers first, offering products and services to help each of them complete their projects on time.

ounded in 1982, Nord-Lock Group began as a family-owned manufacturer based in the heart of Sweden. Known then as Nord-Lock, the company pioneered wedge-locking technology and used it to create a new class of reliable washers. The success of Nord-Lock wedge-locking washers supported the steady growth of the company, and in 1994, it was acquired by Investment AB Latour, an investment company listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. With the support of a strong and reliable owner, Nord-Lock was free to expand on its vision to provide the best bolting solutions to its customers. In 2011, Nord-Lock acquired Superbolt, the inventor of multi-jackbolt tensioning technology, founded in Pittsburgh, USA in 1984. This was quickly followed by the acquisition of Boltight, in 2015, the UKbased creator of hydraulic bolt tensioning technology. In 2016, Nord-Lock came full circle to acquire another Swedish company, Expander Group, a leader in pivot pin technology. These four divisions together make up the Nord-Lock Group, home of the most trusted bolt securing technologies in the world.

F

Full lifetime warranty across all technologies Nord-Lock Group prides itself in providing customers with technologies that have an unmatched reputation for reliability, performance and security. All their products are field-tested for thousands of hours, and put through the most demanding trials their application is likely to experience. According to the company, they expect each and every solution that they produce to perform above and beyond anything in its class.

08

torque-expo.com

In order to highlight the trust in their products, Nord-Lock Group launched a lifetime warranty across all its technologies in 2017. The Nord-Lock Group Lifetime Warranty ensures each solution will perform as expected from the moment it is installed until the end of its intended lifecycle. Unmatched engineering expertise and customer support Providing its global customer base with high-quality products is not the company’s only aim. In fact, Nord-Lock Group has been investing just as heavily in customer technical support services as it has in the development of innovative products. The company works closely with its customers to understand their needs, identify and solve their technical problems and support their projects, from the initial planning to installation and ongoing maintenance. This includes providing advanced testing

and verification capabilities in their inhouse laboratories, a service that is not only available to customers but to anyone facing a bolting challenge. Engineering experts are also available for on-site and remote training sessions that span installation support to assistance with service and retrofitting. With distribution centres in Europe, North America and Asia, the Group also ensures that products can be delivered to customers all around the world. Over the past 35 years, Nord-Lock Group has undergone a radical transformation, from a family-owned manufacturing company, with a focus on European markets, to an engineering powerhouse, offering multiple technologies and services to a global community of customers and industry experts. What has remained the same is its dedication to providing quality bolting solutions, along with the best support services – ensuring that each and every customer is able to complete their projects on time.

Nord-Lock Group Technologies

Nord-Lock wedge-locking technology Nord-Lock wedge-locking technology secures bolted joints with tension instead of friction. This prevents bolts from loosening, even when subjected to extreme vibration and dynamic loads. Nord-Lock products increase operational reliability and lower maintenance costs, while significantly reducing the risks of unplanned production stops and accidents. The system is composed of a pair of wedge-locking washers with cams on one side and serrations on the other. When the bolt and/or nut is tightened, the serrations embed themselves into the mating surfaces. Since the cam angle, is larger than the thread pitch, a wedge effect is created by the cams, preventing the bolt from rotating loose. To find out more about Nord-Lock products, please visit nord-lock.com/nord-lock

Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensioning technology Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensioning technology tightens large bolts safely and accurately using simple hand tools. The tensioners take the high preload requirements in large diameter bolting and break it down into manageable torques using the jackbolts threaded through the nut body. Superbolt products are easy to work with and provide an overwhelming mechanical advantage compared to traditional methods. By tightening the jackbolts, a strong force is generated and directed against a hardened washer. The loads are transferred through the nut body, which is positioned on the main thread by hand. A hardened washer is used to transfer the force while protecting the flange face. The axial force of many jackbolts and the opposite reaction force of the main bolt head create a strong clamping force on the flange. To find out more about Superbolt products, please visit nord-lock.com/superbolt

Boltight hydraulic bolt tensioning technology Boltight solutions make it possible to tighten and loosen large bolts simultaneously while maintaining accurate load. Bolt tensioners stretch the bolt before the nut is wound down under zero friction, ensuring extreme accuracy, speed, uniformity and safety of any bolt tightening situation. When a tensioner is attached to the bolt or stud, high pressure hydraulics are used to axially stretch the bolt. Bolt stretch/elongation creates the clamping force. As the bolt is stretched, the nut lifts clear of the flange. An access window in the tensioner allows the nut to be turned down with very little friction. When the hydraulic pressure is released, the nut traps the stretch in the bolt retaining the ‘load’. To find out more about Boltight products, please visit nord-lock.com/boltight

Expander System pivot pin technology Lug wear is a common problem with all machinery. Repairs involve a costly, time-consuming process with significant downtime and must be repeated several times over a machine’s life. With the Expander System, the repair can be carried out directly in the worn mountings without welding and line boring – a permanent solution to lug wear. The Expander System is installed directly into the existing mounting. Upon tightening the fasteners, the washer presses the slotted expansion sleeve up the tapered ends of the pin. The sleeves expand, conform with the wear pattern and lock the system in the lug ears. Once retorqued, the system locks from both sides. To find out more about Expander System pivot pins, please visit nord-lock.com/expander-system

If you would like more information about any of the Nord-Lock Group technologies mentioned above, please visit the Nord-Lock Group website at nord-lock.com. Alternatively, you can contact your local representative.

FASTENER MANUFACTURING SHIP & SHORE ENVIRONMENTAL

ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY FASTENERS Pollution abatement firm Ship & Shore Environmental is now looking to work more closely with fastener manufacturers to help them cut costs and pollution. Torque speaks with CEO Anoosheh Oskouian…

“The train has left the station.” Earth Day, plastic waste ‘islands’ floating in the ocean, carrier bag charges, the car emissions test scandal…high profile environmental stories now regularly make the headlines. With a few notable exceptions, governments, industry and individual consumers the world over have realised that changes must be made to protect the environment. Fastener manufacturers – and distributors – have not been exempt. Laws designed to protect the environment have directly impacted on fastener production, not least in China, where industrial polluters now face an Environmental Protection Tax. While factories and supply chains adapt, the volume of fastener product making its way to the rest of the world has reduced, causing some short term pain for suppliers. Tapping into this burgeoning ‘green’ trend is Ship & Shore Environmental. The US pollution abatement firm was founded in Long Beach, California, specialising in air pollution capture and control systems for industry. The diversifying business has now set its sights on fastener manufacturers, following a serendipitous rise in enquiries from fastener-related businesses, for which Ship & Shore has helped improve plant efficiency. “We’ve recently been getting more requests from the fastener market,” Ship & Shore Environmental CEO Anoosheh Oskouian tells Torque Magazine. “We figured the expansion was interesting and we’ve been investing in new equipment so it made sense for us to hit the fastener world.” Ship & Shore Environmental works closely with fastener companies to best design and integrate pollution abatement systems into their current plants. Illinois-based J&M Plating – which provides heat treating, coating, playing plating and sorting solutions to the fastener industry – is one of Ship & Shore’s fastener industry customers. The duo started working together six years ago, when Ship & Shore engineers installed a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) to enhance J&M’s plant efficiency. Then, after J&M’s air compressor room kept overheating, Ship & Shore engineered an airflow system for the room to ventilate the air and keep

10

torque-expo.com

air compressors cool in the summer. Furthermore, in 2016, Ship & Shore installed a heat recovery system so J&M could take waste heat and bring it back into the plant, resulting in significant cost savings. Cutting expenditure and doing the right thing for the environment? That sounds like a win-win. Environmental movement Business is growing for Ship & Shore Environmental, despite President Trump’s lack of enthusiasm for cutting emissions. “We’ve been doing well, despite the challenge with the current administration,” Oskouian tells Torque. “But the train has left the station. The current US administration does whatever it wants to do, but we hope that the movement can resume in future.” Ship & Shore’s reach extends globally, with sales offices not just in its home state of California but also in Toronto (“we do a lot of business with Canada”), China and with reach into other territories. “There’s a really big opportunity in Dubai and we are working with a business there.” Globally, the Ship & Shore boss has seen the manufacturing sector acknowledge the need to protect the environment: “We see more and more focus on the environment. There’s a global consensus and there has to be – you can’t stop pollution crossing borders. “It’s growing in manufacturing. New factories all take the environment into account. More factories are having to spend a lot on pollution control and we can help. “One of the philosophies we have is to try to serve all industry and all types of equipment, so we are not limited to one technology. We work with just about all types of industry, including petrochemical, expanded polystyrene, fibre glass manufacturing and many more. “People are more aware of our impact on the environment, particularly the next generation, like my young son. There’s a focus on conscious living and not being wasteful. It’s about being responsible and doing the right thing.” The train has indeed left the station. Find out more at www.shipandshore.com.

FASTENER SPECIAL_EIFI_TOR027_Sept18.qxp 14/09/2018 10:11 Page 1

FASTENER MANUFACTURING EIFI

EIFI 2018: GROWTH FOR AUTOMOTIVE AND CONSTRUCTION The European Industrial Fasteners Institute Secretariat brings us up to date with the market and its latest Conference. IFI’s 2018 conference was held in May in the scenic sea city of Split, Croatia. The programme began with a welcome cocktail and dinner at the Hotel Le Meridien Lav, where industry executives from major European fastener manufacturers, Members of EIFI and special guests – from the Fastener associations of China, Taiwan and USA – networked in a friendly atmosphere. The full-day conference programme started with the Automotive Group Chairman Paolo Pozzi who presented a European and worldwide overview of the automotive sector. Global vehicles sales were very positive in April 2018, year to date: Up 9.6% in Europe, 4.8% in China, 19.7% in Brazil, 20.5% in Russia, 19% in Argentina and stable in the USA with a small downturn in Japan (-1,3%). In 2018 a general worldwide sales growth of 2.1% in the automotive market is estimated. Regarding electrification, in 2017 the average European emissions were 117,3 g/km down from 132 g/km in 2012, but many countries showed a negative trend, such as the Netherlands, Greece, Luxembourg and some others. The production of BEV (battery electric vehicles) is expected to increase by 8% in the next seven years worldwide. Mr Pozzi also analysed new mobility services, which he said would have an important impact on the industry not just in terms of vehicle column sales, but – more importantly, he said – on how customers interact with vehicles, their expectations for vehicles and their use of these vehicles. Further presentations included “Innovative Croatian solutions for the global automotive industry”, delivered by Zoran Legac, coowner of Croatian Company Feroimpex automobilska tehnika d.o.o, which produces bearings and parts for the automotive industry, such as wind power and railway industry.

E

General Assembly EIFI President Anders Karlsson opened the first part of the General Assembly, followed by the Secretariat’s summary of the EIFI balance-sheet 2017 and budget 2018. Stefan Beyer, General Manager of the EIFI Executive Committee, updated the room on the activities carried out during the year and the future projects such as the the Ppm document update “Mechanical Fasteners Quality of technical characteristics”, a new survey on electricity and gas tariffs at European level and the amendment of the EN nomenclature code system CN 7318. The EIFI’s Board Score 2017 followed, covering the production, import and export figures collected from EIFI Members and a general economic outlook in Europe.

In 2017, the European economy grew at its fastest rate in 10 years, as the recovery spread to all Member States. It was supported by high levels of confidence, global expansion, low financing costs, improving private balance sheets and brightening labour market conditions. The European economy should continue growing for some time, with unemployment falling further and inflation increasing only very gradually. GDP growth in the Euro area was at 2.4% in 2017, forecast to be 2.3% in 2018 and easing to 2% in 2019. Ramon Ceravalls, Chairman of the General Fasteners Group of EIFI, focused his report on the trends of the building sector in Europe and worldwide. The world constructions outlook to 2022 is expected to be good, with a yearly increase of 3.9%. The estimated growth for 2030 is more than 50% in China, USA and India. The European construction output in 2017 was €1.5 Billion, up 3.5% on 2016. Josip Tica, Full Professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business, gave a very interesting in-depth look on the worldwide economic performance between 2000 and 2020. His comments covered the global growth forecast 3.9% (0.2% above October forecast for 18-19); USA, Japan, EMU and China grow above expectations as well as the emerging markets Brazil, Mexico, CEE. The General Assembly closed with speeches from the EIFI’s special guests, giving a general overview of their fastener associations and industries in their respective countires. The EIFI thanked Florian Seidl, Member of the Executive Board at EFDA, Ivan Lin, Chairman of International Committee at TFTA, Taiwan Fasteners Trading Association, Kangsheng Xue, Chairman of CFIA, China Fasteners Industry Association and Emanuel DeSantis, Vice-Chairman of IFI, Industrial Fasteners Institute. At the gala dinner, President Karlsson mentioned Robert Lench, EIFI honorary President, who was sadly unable to join this year’s EIFI event. He then awarded Christian F Kochersheidt with the Robert Dicke Award and took the occasion to wish happy birthday to Sergio Pirovano, who kindly offered his prosecco to all Attendees. The Convention wrapped up with an excursion to Šibenik, the oldest native Croatian town on the shore. The EIFI thanked DIV for the organisation of the event. The next annual EIFI convention will be organised by Member Artema in France, dates TBC. www.eifi.org

FASTENER SPECIAL_EUROTEC_TOR027_Sept18.qxp 14/09/2018 10:31 Page 1

FaSTEnER manuFaCTuRing EuROTEC

EuROTEC nEaRS €50m milESTOnE Eurotec’s humble beginnings – when it sold two pallets out of a garage in Hagen – are looking increasingly distant as the company’s uninterrupted expansion continues. Torque saw the latest development first hand last month… his year, Eurotec plans to pass the €50 million turnover milestone. To facilitate that, as any visitor to its Hagen headquarters will confirm in the last few years, the manufacturer has been regularly expanding with new halls to create an extended production and warehouse space. Torque’s latest visit to Eurotec includes a tour around recently completed production halls and – as if that wasn’t enough – when we left work was beginning on an additional 3,200 metre² warehouse, which is scheduled for completion by year end. Not bad for a company celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. “We’re seeing between ten and 15% growth every year,” Jörn Rüschenschmidt, Key Account Manager & Business Developer, tells Torque. “It’s pretty unique, but we are realistic. There will be a time when this growth eases up.” Employing approximately 150 people, the business still classes itself as a relatively small firm, flexible enough to provide more modest orders. Investment has seen the team grow, including an expanded marketing department, more technical staff (which submits ETA applications on an almost daily basis) and Project Managers. Exports make up around 60% of the business. The firm has plans to set up more subsidiaries around the world, it revealed, whether storage or solely sales offices. Appearances at internationally-focused shows at home (“BAU is still a lead show”) and overseas will continue – Eurotec will return to the International Fastener Expo this October and November. Trump’s tariffs – including the 25% duty on aluminium introduced this year – have slowed Eurotec’s plans but that other big difficulty facing the fastener market this year – extended lead times thanks to China’s production at capacity – have had a limited impact on Eurotec, thanks to its German production and limited amount of stocks it takes from Asia: “Even small amounts have a big delay. It does affect us, but it is not a major problem. We manufacture lots of product here so we are still stable and reliable.” Buying significant raw material stock has also helped the firm manage price rises this year. Relationships have helped too, Rüschenschmidt explains: “We rely on our partners and we have stuck by them. We want to work cooperatively and have long term relationships. That philosophy comes from the top of the company. “We never want to be the cheapest. We want to sell quality.” While Eurotec is growing its range, it prides itself on offering a sleek product line-up. Eurotec’s latest catalogue is sizeable at 270 pages, but not as unwieldy as some of those offered by competitors. Twenty new pages are dedicated to freshly launched construction timber parts, with other key range expansions including plastic pedestals, a larger construction tie range and heavy tie bars.

T

PROJECTS Eurotec does not supply the end user, but it has become more closely involved with projects and applications. “We’ve moved from being a small timber player to now working on complete projects around the world. “Our customer calls us for technical help and we are a supplier for the project. We can even add products that are not in the catalogue. We ask, ‘what part of the project can we also take on?’ We can deliver virtually everything except for the materials, like timber and concrete. So we’ve become a system supplier, not just a screw supplier.” Due to the local manufacturing of all plastic parts Eurotec now has the option to produce customer specific items, which are not only suitable for the construction industry. This is a significant milestone for Eurotec´s future growth as this new area of operations will continue to be increased. Specifically for this business area, six technicians with deep expert knowledge in product design and production processes are now available to support customers and colleagues. But rest assured, Eurotec’s core remains fasteners for timber, concrete, decking and rebar. Apart from further expansion of its Hagen facility, Eurotec is currently working on the local production of further fasteners in different dimensions and a suitably large celebration of a successful two decades in the fastener business next year. www.eurotec.team

FASTENER MANUFACTURING MECAVIT

MECAVIT’S MANUFACTURING GROWTH Industry 4.0, the automotive market and growth in 2018… Torque catches up with the latest from the Italian fastener manufacturer. ecavit Srl produces fasteners in Italy’s North, near Bologna, in the industrial area of Castel Guelfo, including standard unified and special screws for virtually every industrial sector, made of high resistance carbon steel and stainless steel. The Italian manufacturer has seen orders increase this year, thanks in part to those extended Far East lead times, while strong long-term relationships with suppliers have helped the firm manage the well-publicised raw material price rises faced by the entire fastener industry. Over half of Mecavit’s production is destined for overseas markets, including the rest of the EU, Russia and ExtraEuropean Countries. Key markets served include mechanical, aerospace, home appliances and automotive. The latter is hugely important to Mecavit, representing almost one third of its business. Mecavit’s automotive business is handled via distribution, rather than directly with OEMs. But manufacturers and distributors alike are welcome to visit Mecavit and partner together on finalising designs, materials and tolerances.

M

PRODUCTION FACILITIES Mecavit produces a wide assortment of standard parts, and 4,000 pallets of unified screws (DIN, UNI and ISO) in stock, ready for delivery. Mecavit’s production halls were expanded in 2009 and now occupy 3,500m², alongside 3,000m² of warehouse for raw materials, finished areas and a covered area for shipments. The halls feature everything from 17 cold forging machines and automated production lines to its in-house heat treatment line where it can monitor the process closely. In addition to heat treatments, Mecavit can provide other technical or protective treatments, such as Zinc Nickel black, Threadlocker and mechanical galvanising. Mecavit’s own systems monitor production for traceability, checking each individual screw throughout different phases of deformation and at the end of the production cycle. Advanced sorting machines automatically check screws according to set parameters and tolerances, backed by a Quality Lab. The Lab can run many types of tests, including mechanical strength, geometry verification and certification of surface coatings for corrosion resistance.

In the following years, step by step, the company developed its own production of blind rivets, which was expanded later to other families of products for metal fastening; last but not least, it developed a comprehensive programme of tools, creating a special department for the design and construction of tools for blind rivets and rivet nuts. Starting 2006, Rivit concentrated on its own infrastructure: the new headquarters came first, with an advanced logistics centre, equipped with an automated warehouse. The new challenge was to start a procedure of shipping all goods from a single location to customers anywhere in the world. Then the company portal was started: catalogues, product specifications, offers and orders available 24 hours a day. In recent years, Rivit has focused on developing exports. The network of distributors has expanded to include 60 countries, alongside the decision to open two independent companies, Rivit India and Rivit Maroc, which are located in emerging markets where new business opportunities are concentrated. The strength of Rivit nowadays is based on an exhaustive programme of products, where the customer can find a wide range of solutions to join and deform the sheet metal. FASTENER MANUFACTURING SIPA

SIPA: 360 DEGREE SERVICE Manufacturing in metal and plastic, SIPA has been serving the market for nearly three decades. ocated in North East Italy, near Vicenza, SIPA S.r.l. was established almost 30 years ago, starting out in the production of hardware including plates and angles. In the following years, SIPA’s catalogue steadily grew with the addition of iron articles, including plaques / platelets, hangers, shelves, quadrates, plates for gazebos and more. 10 years after its foundation, the firm diversified into pressing plastics, introducing complementary plastic articles to its increasingly broad line-up, including adhesive hooks, key rings, duck hooks and under chair caps. In 2001, SIPA developed its own mechanical workshop to deal with the maintenance, design and implementation of moulds. Five years later, production of washers of various measures and regulations began and – also in 2006 – SIPA ramped up its overseas ambitions by starting to exhibit at trade fairs in Europe. Today, SIPA’s HQ covers around 16,000m², in a vast plot of land 55,000m², roughly split into four separate areas:

L

n IRON CUTTING DEPARTMENT The machine park is composed of 30 automatic presses for the cutting of sheet tapes of 50 to 250 tonnes. n PLASTIC PRESSING DEPARTMENT This machine park is composed of 10 automatic presses for the pressing of plastic material in granules of 50 to 430 tonnes. There is also a bicoloured 250-tonne press that allows the use of two diverging materials or two diverging colours simultaneously.

SIPA’s 16,000m2 HQ is set in a vast 55,000m2 plot

FASTENER MANUFACTURING TEUDELOFF

TOOLING WITH TEUDELOFF AND TIL Two years on from Teudeloff’s merger with Birmingham’s Tooling International Limited, Torque speaks with Teudeloff Sales Manager Thomas Rapp for a trading update. How’s business? So far we are very happy with significant growth and many new customers spread out over all continents, but mostly in Europe, the USA and Far East, including Taiwan, China and Japan. Teudeloff is a relatively young company but your customers are some of the biggest names in the business – how has Teudeloff achieved so much success in so short a time? Indeed, we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary next year. Nevertheless, we rank among the best suppliers in recess pins and punches for the fastener industry. How does being part of the Würth Group benefit Teudeloff and your customers? Luckily we have been part of the Würth group since 2005, so we can combine the advantages of a small 50-person family business and a big global player with over 70,000 employees. On the one hand we are small enough to take care of our customer’s wishes and requirements self-sufficiently, individually, flexible and quickly. On the other hand, we have the support of a financially strong group, giving us the freedom and security for dynamics and development, as well as the trust of our customers in a secure and reliable tool supply for the future. We are especially proud of our Torx stock, which is the biggest in Europe, possibly even in the world. Almost all sizes and penetration depths in various materials and coatings are available and in stock. Among them is our top quality CodeT®. We will do all that we can and work for the satisfaction of our customers every day with passion and lifeblood. We will fight tough but fair for every customer, every order and every delivery date. We will continue to transfer good results and conclusions to other customers, new projects and new products as well. And at the end we will see if we succeed in delighting our customers all over the world in the same very successful way as we did in Germany and Europe. Ask for CodeT® and order your individual test package for good tool life today. www.teudeloff.de

FASTENER MANUFACTURING NORD-LOCK GROUP

BOLTIGHT HOLDS FAST TO MANUFACTURING EXPERTISE Nord-Lock Group tells Torque how Boltight is welcoming the challenges of a global market… he future for UK manufacturing is in the spotlight and business leaders are gearing up to respond to the challenges of global competition. As part of Nord-Lock Group, Boltight bolt tensioning solutions are used across the world and its focus on research and development (R&D) and export opportunities is helping secure its position as one of the global leaders in its field. The group’s reputation has been built on safety, quality and innovation. Its equipment is designed for demanding applications in the oil and gas, power generation, wind energy, industrial engineering, construction and mining industries. It is used on infrastructure projects across the world and ongoing investment in advanced technology ensures it keeps evolving with the demands of its customers. That emphasis on innovation is critical to the future of all UK manufacturers wanting to differentiate themselves within an increasingly competitive global market. Earning and defending a track record for solution-driven R&D is what has helped establish Boltight as a supplier of choice, the firm says.

T

KEEPING UP WITH A CHALLENGING MARKET As infrastructure projects become more ambitious and complex, so too are the engineering challenges they present. Super structures need to withstand the significant pressures and much of that focuses on the myriad of bolted joints which hold them together. Bolt fatigue, relaxation and corrosion are huge concerns and accurate and reliable bolt tensioning is safety critical. Hydraulic bolt tensioning is far safer and more reliable than conventional tightening methods. Rather than using torque, it applies a consistent force, meaning the applied load can be controlled far more accurately. It is uniform, stress-free and the load transfer factor is calculable. Boltight tools benefit from state-of-the-art design concepts and incorporate the latest technology composite material seals. The manufacturer has immersed itself in solving the challenges its customers face and the reliability of its offer has seen the business flourish. Where a problem cannot be solved by using standard tools, it designs and manufactures bespoke tools to meet specific customer needs. It uses a 3D CAD system to model the challenge and design an appropriate solution. High pressure cyclical fatigue testing is then used to see whether it is up to the job. CREATING INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE Tailoring a manufacturing business to evolve in line with the needs of its customer base helps ensure longevity. Yet businesses are under constant pressure to up the ante and provide an ever more comprehensive offer.

26

torque-expo.com

Boltight tools are designed for demanding applications

When competing on a global stage it can also be useful to combine forces. Being part of a strong network of international companies within the Nord-Lock Group, offers customers an enhanced range of unique technologies, including Boltight hydraulic bolt tensioners, Nord-Lock wedge locking washers, Expander System pivot pins and Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensioners. With access to international sales and marketing resources, it is easier for manufacturers to reach out to new markets and applications. Boltight already exports more than 90% of its products, meaning that it is well placed to grapple with the challenges facing UK manufacturers. It currently benefits from the weak pound and its economic fortunes are not reliant on the strength of a single geographical market. Brexit may pose threats to the British manufacturing sector, yet for those businesses which have already started to make inroads into the export market or have formed global alliances, it will also present major opportunities. www.nord-lock.com/boltight

The basket lines are suitable for a wide range of parts, including small pointed screws, springs or other tiny, difficult to handle parts. The Reinhardt systems reduce the coating material and energy consumption with the best possible coating quality and throughput. This results in low operating costs and high quality coatings. The cleaning cycles of the baskets and especially the drums are very long, as they will not run into warm ambient. The transfer of the material takes place in the cold area to the conveyor belt or to the material pallets of the tempering furnace. Reinhardt systems says it has the highest safety standards and a minimised EX area. From the material transfer to the coating, the pre-drying zone, curing and the cooling zone, everything is built by Reinhardt. The optimised continuous ovens with pallets reduce the space requirements and shorten a system by up to 40% as well as preventing material mixing on conveyors. The heat treatment and tempering ovens of Reinhardt are based on more than 75 years of experience. Thousands of ovens are installed worldwide in all industries and in a huge range of different productions with a temperature range up to 650°C. With hydrogen embrittlement a concern in the galvanic processes, Reinhardt offers the tempering ovens to diffuse out hydrogen through heat treatment. The company concludes: “You can benefit from Reinhardt’s skills to install the best solution and layout for your heat treatment job. You get the best available quality, perfect temperature uniformity, efficiency and smallest foot-print on the market. It does not matter if you need a standard batch oven or a fully automated line – Reinhardt will be here for you.” www.reinhardt.gmbh

UK FOCUS HALL-FAST

FAST TRACK Established 12 years ago, Hall-Fast Industrial Supplies has come a long way in a short while, handling over 45 million stocked items and seeing business grow. Malcolm Hall, Founder and Owner of the community-minded company, speaks with Torque… and my wife have a strong desire to ‘put something back’ and that is why you will see our name connected with a wide variety of initiatives and sponsorship in which we invest time, resources and finance. Over the last 12 years we have raised, donated or sponsored community-based initiatives in and around Mansfield and further afield in excess of £500,000, and we are very proud of what we give back to others. How big a proportion of your business is exports? What’s your view on the potential impact Brexit could have on overseas trading? Export sales accounts for circa 30% of our overall sales. I was and still am in favour of leaving the EU, we have seen an increase in enquiries and also sales from all over the world since the British people voted to leave and I personally believe that despite all of the scaremongering nothing much will change come March 2019. There are a world of opportunities for British businesses overseas.

I

t sounds like Hall-Fast has had a strong period of sales recently. How big has the growth been and what do you put that strong performance down to? Sales grew by 14% on the previous year. The success is down to our huge investment in a new website and software system which is now starting to pay dividends. You’ve got a new website – can you fill us in on the background to that as you had some issues with the last one? On 2 December 2016 our previous website basically broke following some development work which was undertaken. Our old website was a custom made system that had the one back end, with international ‘satellite’ websites all linking into it. Changes were made to the back end and these changes along with other things fundamentally broke the website. Our new website is Magneto

28

torque-expo.com

based and is fully integrated into our Datafile software system. How long have you had a trade shop? And is business through the shop growing? We opened our Mansfield-based trade shop in 2017 following the closure of local multinational and independent DIY stores. I saw an opportunity to service the local tradesman, general public and businesses by stocking a standard range of PPE, workwear, fasteners, tools and general DIY and trade essentials, we have seen an increase in both football and sales instore. Hall-Fast seems to have a strong community focus, sponsoring local team Mansfield Town FC, backing the Mansfield Courage awards, etc. Why is it important to the firm to be so involved in the community? Hall-Fast is a family business and myself

How do you view the market generally at the moment? Strong? Is it tough for your customers at the moment? The majority of suppliers, customers or business owners that I speak to are also seeing opportunities for growth in the markets that they operate in, but there is some uncertainty out there which has been caused by Brexit. However to me uncertainty gives businesses an opportunity to diversify and think differently about things and the businesses that are doing this are doing well. Our sales of specialist fasteners both within the UK and overseas markets is growing, however sales of tools for us continue to be stable but with low margins being realised. What’s your ambition for Hall-Fast in the short term? My aim is to continue to grow Hall-Fast over the next few years and either get the business to a position where we can sell it or bring in a manager to run it for us.

UK FOCUS HEICO FASTENERS

MAXIMUM BOLT SECURITY HEICO Fasteners UK National Sales Manager Paul Windsor tells Torque how fasteners are no longer an afterthought in the UK market and how there’s potential for improved lubrication education… EICO Fasteners UK, based in Hockley in Essex, is the UK arm of the international HEICO Group, manufacturer of the HEICO-LOCK® and HEICOTEC® bolt security products and HEICO-FORM cold forged parts. The HEICO Group is expert in the science of bolt technology, offering innovative solutions to the age-old problem of loose bolts along with cutting edge laboratory services that offer customers in-depth technical support and analysis. According to Paul Windsor, National Sales Manager at HEICO Fasteners, much has changed over the years in the UK market in terms of the acceptance of how crucial selecting the correct fastener is. “In the UK there is a lot more understanding of the importance of fasteners in an application than say 20 years ago,” says Paul, who has over 30 years of fastening experience. “Once upon a time, an engineer would have taken 10 minutes to decide which fasteners to use on a project but now engineers have a lot more technical knowledge when it comes to fasteners and understanding the importance of selecting the correct fastener for the job, particularly in terms of tolerances.” Bolted connections working themselves loose can be a safety critical issue so selecting the correct fastener is crucial and, as Paul explains, the HEICO-LOCK® Wedge Lock Washers and HEICO-TEC® Tension Nut provide innovative solutions. “Our HEICO-LOCK® range of wedge locking washer products use preload rather than friction to secure bolts. The washers have wedge shaped cams on the inside and radial teeth on the outside. As any movement is only possible between the inner wedge shaped cams, and the angle of these cams is greater than the pitch of the bolt thread, any movement increases the thickness of the washers which then increases the clamping force in the joint.” The company’s innovative HEICO-TEC® Tension Nut is ideal for larger bolted joints, the Heico UK National Sales Manager says: “What makes HEICO-TEC® ideal for larger bolts, ranging from M30 –

H

M120, is that the pretension force of the main thread is distributed to smaller pressure bolts. The design of these smaller pressure bolts means there is no requirement for specialist electric, hydraulic or pneumatic tools. All that is needed is a conventional torque wrench.”

// Now engineers have a lot more technical knowledge when it comes to understanding fasteners. // But even with all this innovation, Paul still feels there are crucial areas that still require more education in the UK market: “Many people still don’t fully understand the importance of lubrication when it comes to fasteners. Using a lubricant reduces the coefficient of friction making it easier to accurately achieve the desired pre-load, as well as extending the life of the bolt. “By continuing to work closely with our UK customers, particularly during the design phase, we can further increase the understanding of the importance of selecting the correct fastener and ensure our customers achieve maximum bolt security.”

UK FOCUS KEBRELL NUTS & BOLTS

STRENGTH IN STOCK Kebrell’s significant UK stock holding is further backed up by a manufacturing plant close by in Spain, from which it can produce bespoke parts from prototype to production. Following growth in a range of sectors, Torque speaks with Commercial Manager Ray Goddard… ow’s business? Throughout the Kebrell group, we’ve seen a steady growth in sales for the first half of the year, particularly in the utilities, automotive and electrical industries. Like everyone else in the industry, we have been feeling the pressure on rising costs from the Far East and Europe, which has made it very difficult to stabilise prices. In light of these increases, we have been working with our customers and manufacturing partners to ensure that we can continue to offer an excellent level of service whilst maintaining competitive prices.

H

How big is your UK warehouse space? How many locations do you cover and are you looking to expand? Our CDC in Wednesbury, West Midlands is 200,000ft², with a current stock holding of approximately 20,000 tons of fasteners and fixings. We have a further five branches in the UK and of course there’s our manufacturing plant in Spain. What sectors are you particularly strong in right now? We’ve always been strong in the automotive industry. We have some of the largest stocks of ISO 4162 flange screws in the UK and with the ability to manufacture bespoke parts from

30

torque-expo.com

prototype to production stages, so we’ve become something of a “go to” supplier for end users, Tier 1 and aftermarket customers. Similarly, within the utilities and electrical sectors, we have maintained contracts and customers by providing an excellent service and meeting the rise in demand for standard and specialised parts. How popular is your manufacturing business? Growing? Are you seeing more requests for special products? The manufacturing side of the group is seeing strong growth. We’re working with our customers pretty much every day, looking at drawings and how we can service those customer’s needs. Whether it be from a full prototype to production part, or even something as simple as designing a specialised coating with our plating partners. We love a challenge at Kebrell! We’ve even gold-plated parts for a bespoke order last year. Can you tell us about your in-house repackaging service? Our in-house repackaging department has been one of our USPs for many years. We can offer a range of packaging services from a simple polyethylene bag with customer labelling requirements to a fully bespoke, branded design. By having the packaging facility

on-site, it allows us to provide customers with a quick turn-around and keeps costs lower than if we were to send to an external facility. What are the key benefits of working with Kebrell? One of the key benefits of working with Kebrell is our stock holdings. We have some of the largest stocks of fasteners in the UK and we’re always ensuring that our customers have a minimum of 12 months stock available from our CDC. We have some incredibly knowledgeable staff throughout the Kebrell group, who are always ready to help with customer requirements. We’ve adopted an attitude of “if we haven’t got it, we’ll source it” – which we believe gives our customers a complete fastener solution, without the need of having to shop around. Any final thoughts for our readers? We’ve got some exciting plans for 2019 including the launch of several new product lines towards the first quarter. We are looking forward to what next year will bring and are keen to strengthen our position within the industry, as well as developing relationships with our existing and new customers. www.kebrell.co.uk

UK FOCUS BOLLHOFF DIRECT

DEALING DIRECT

Bollhoff Direct got its start after swapping a ‘busy fool’ philosophy for a niche profitable business that was something of an industry first. General Manager Tony Dutfield provides Torque with a candid insight into the business’ beginnings, lead times and why Bolhoff Direct definitely isn’t planning to double its warehouse space in the UK…

Growth on track: Bollhoff Direct is growing, thanks in part to a thriving rail industry ollhoff’s UK branch is based on a trading estate in the West Midlands and to the uninitiated there is little clue that it is part of a huge multinational business that turned over €620 million in 2017. “I’ve been in the fastener business for around 30 years and I used to buy from Bollhoff before I joined,” Bollhoff Direct General Manager Tony Dutfield tells Torque. “I had no idea about the size of the company. I think that’s the case for a lot of people who see this small building in Willenhall and get a few nuts and bolts from there. The reality is so different.” The 140 year old family business is made up of 45 companies across 40 locations in 24 countries. That includes 12 production facilities and 50 sales offices,

B

32

torque-expo.com

staffed by 3,000 employees. So it is fair to say that Bollhoff is, to put it mildly, a fairly substantial group. The Willenhall office houses two divisions of the business, including Bollhoff Direct. A relative spring chicken at 16 years old, Bollhoff Direct is almost unique not just within the Bollhoff business but also in the wider industry. “Bollhoff Direct is essentially a sales office of Germany,” explains Dutfield. “We don’t keep any stock whatsoever in the UK, it’s all in Germany, in Bielefeld. We have a live link so when we get an enquiry we can see real time actual stock. We enter all our orders into the computer and in Germany they pick, pack, put it on UPS and send it direct to our customer. That’s where the name comes from!”

TARGETING THE NICHE Before Bollhoff Direct was established 21 years ago, all products were sold under one umbrella at Bollhoff UK, until a new MD at the head of the European group evaluated the business. “At the time, the standard products division wasn’t doing particularly well. UK turnover was high, but with not much margin – we were busy fools, basically. “Based on that, the plan was to scrap the standard products business in the UK, ship it all back to Germany and they would just deal with the UK as an export market. My boss at the time, Alan Gibbons, argued successfully that although we were not profitable, there was a core business that was profitable, which he suggested we try to build on.

UK FOCUS BOLLHOFF DIRECT The PARRYPLUG is an award-winning solution for unauthorised loosening of thread connections

“The challenge was; could we run it → remotely from Germany?

“We had to lose a lot of business, because not everything can be done that way, but we were only losing non-profitable business. Selling pallet loads of nuts for next to nothing wasn’t worth it. “We found that it worked and that niche market was viable. “The Bollhoff stock range is huge and we do a lot of parts which aren’t generally available in the UK. We are an easy option for the customer. If you want something that’s easily available off the shelf in Europe, but not necessarily in the UK, previously you’d have to contact a European supplier, pay in Euros and make up the minimum shipment. With us, customers can speak in English to local people, pay in Sterling and you don’t have to make a minimum shipment up – if you want one box of M6 nuts then you can. “At the moment there is only us and Bollhoff in France that sells a direct service out of Germany without holding stock.” It was an unusual step to make in the fastener industry business to make in 2002. “There are a few German companies who have set up new branches in the UK with varying success but no one as far as I am aware has offered that sort of direct service like that.” KNOWLEDGE, SERVICE, FLEXIBILITY While a small team in the UK, Bollhoff Direct has sales people with decades of experience. “They really know what they are talking about. Some companies just seem to know part numbers and they won’t have the knowledge to suggest an alternative if they’ve run out of a certain stock. We always say, if you don’t have stock, offer a substitute. If the customer can’t accept it then at least you have tried

34

torque-expo.com

and in a lot of cases a customer will say ‘yes, I can use that’.” The firm also prides itself on flexibility, offering scheduled deliveries, direct and more besides. Bollhoff Direct’s business is predominantly with distributors (“probably around 90%”) and trading is strong, with June 2018 proving to be a best ever month in turnover and margin. Some of that growth has been down to a thriving rail industry.

// The more scare products are our niche. We have them on the shelf. // “A lot of our distributors are in the rail business and we hold a lot of stock in Germany specifically for the rail industry, like Geomet coated parts. A distributor can come to us and ask for 1,000 coated bolts and we can get them from stock in two to three days, probably at a fraction of the price you’d get in the UK. We also have large stocks of special types of washers for the rail industry. We are the easy go-to option for a lot of people just needing small quantities or if they need them fast. “We tend not to get too involved with common items, like nuts and bolts. The more scarce products are our niche. We do a huge range of fine pitch products which again are not that easy to get hold of in the UK. We have them on the shelf.” Are the increasing lead times in the fastener sector affecting Bollhoff Direct? “It does impact us. Particularly this year, lead times have extended incredibly,” says

Dutfield. “However Bollhoff is a big player and we still keep a lot of manufacturing business in Europe. The European suppliers recognise that, so while our stock isn’t always the cheapest, we do tend to be higher up their priority list to get product when stock is scarce.” Unwelcome on the horizon is the uncertainty surrounding the UK’s exit from the EU: “As we ship direct from Germany, it could have a significant effect on us.” Beyond Brexit, Bollhoff Direct wants to continue to grow with the rest of the Bollhoff family. New products – like the PARRYPLUG, an award winning universal solution for unauthorised loosening of thread connections – are part of the growth strategy. “Most of our customers are distributors and they are only really interested in a new product when their customers are asking for it. So one of the things we need to try and be a bit more successful at is to make the OEM customer more aware of Bollhoff products, so they ask distributors for them. It takes a while.” Getting the Bollhoff Direct message out there is a target for the firm. “We tend to assume everyone knows who we are and what we do and that’s a bad thing,” Dutfield explains. “After 20 years of dealing with customers we still regularly get comments from them, saying they never knew we did brass or nylon, for example. That’s our fault. We have been dealing with them for years so we should make sure they know everything we do. But you just assume. “We have a huge stock range and depth to be going at. We should be making sure everyone out there knows exactly what we do!” 01902 603934 www.bollhoff.com/uk

UK FOCUS AEROSOL SOLUTIONS

QUALITY – JUST A SPRAY AWAY Celebrating twenty years in the business, Aerosol Solutions tells Torque about sticking with its niche, how the industry has changed over two decades and getting the most out of trade shows… Some of the Team at Aerosol Solutions

lenty has changed at Aerosol Solutions since it was established two decades ago, including growing its headcount, developing its range and moving location as the business has expanded. But one crucial thing has remained unmovable since it started out in 1998. “Aerosols have always been the core to our range,” Aerosol Solutions Managing Director Stuart Graham tells Torque Magazine. “Over the years we have added some complementary products like wipes and pads, but aerosols have always been central for us.” That focused strategy has paid off for the Midlands firm, not least in 2018: “Business has been brilliant this year. June and July in particular were incredibly busy and we’re now looking at the possibility of taking more space on the trading estate.”

TRUST IN THE MARKET The ISO9001:2015-accredited firm now handles over 80 products (it started out with around 40) and recently completed a redesign of its range, which has placed more emphasis on the Aerosol Solutions branding. The 20-year old firm is now a distribution mainstay, supplying major buying groups – as well as hundreds of independent distributors. The firm supplies customers from a wide range of industries, from engineers merchants, fixing and fastener merchants, plant hire and sales, builders’ merchants and even the food industry. Aerosol Solutions is also seeking to grow its network too, seeking new distributors, dependent on their location and the market sector they operate in. The customer relationship and looking after distribution partners has been

crucial to Aerosol Solutions’ success over the years, from offering a reliable flexible customer service, low minimum orders and providing product training to its partners. “It has all been about building relationships and developing trust. All our customers are important to us, whether they are smaller and just getting started or one of our biggest distributors.” THE CHANGING INDUSTRY Aerosol Solutions has not only passed its own business milestones in its first 20 years, including moving in 2007 to its current location in Breaston, near Derby, but it has also seen some important changes in the wider aerosol industry. “There have been a number of new environmental regulations introduced and there have also been changing

requirements when it comes to labelling products. We’ve seen CFCs banned from the industry too, of course.” Other changes will no doubt be familiar to other long-running firms in the world of wholesale and distribution. When the family-run business started out most orders still came in by fax – those have now largely been replaced by email orders. Other industry changes have seen some roles merged in the wider market, with many trade counter assistants also working as buyers for their business. Perhaps inevitably, there have also been increasing pricing pressures over the years to the point that pricing has sometimes been known to lead sales enquiries. Keeping up with the times has also meant supporting staff through training, with Aerosol Solutions a very keen

advocate of training. Employees are supported through Prostart Training Limited: “We believe in commitment and recognition. It’s ideal when it suits both the staff member and the business.” Thanks to its commitment to training, Aerosol Solutions won a training accolade from Prostart in July this year, receiving the ‘commitment and special recognition award’. “We are very pleased to have won this award, but it was completely unexpected! We’re a team and we all work well together. We take pride in our work and our business.” COMING SOON So what’s next for the proactive company? Aerosol Solutions is currently on the lookout for new products, Stuart Graham tells Torque, with a keen ear for what the market demands and closely

listening to its distributor customers. We’re told that Aerosol Solutions is currently weighing up its options in a number of new areas, so watch this space. In the near future, the firm will be exhibiting at Torque-Expo Coventry at the Ricoh Arena and Troy Means Business in Silverstone. At both locations it will be employing its simple recipe for show success: “We’re looking forward to meeting new and existing customers at Torque-Expo Coventry 2018. We are keen to make the most of our time at any trade show and are always highly proactive in following up leads, so come and see us – we hope to see you there!” Catch up with Aerosol Solutions at Torque-Expo Coventry 2018, 3-4 October, Ricoh Arena. www.aerosolsolutions.co.uk

At the same time, the clamp strength constantly acting on the component is 20% higher. DeltaBolt is therefore safer than many other lockbolt systems, according to Titgemeyer. Where safety fasteners are called for, e.g. in vehicle manufacturing, vibrationproof fasteners for agricultural vehicles, or for added safety in commercial vehicle manufacturing the DeltaBolt offers an ideal fastener solution.

T

GOOD GENES Behind the production of the DeltaBolt system lies the technology that goes in to the tried-and-trusted TIFAS LockBolt, which is also manufactured by Titgemeyer UK. The system is made to the

// Where safety fasteners are called for, DeltaBolt is an ideal solution. // international standards governing industrial fastener systems as well as to the automotive industry’s ISO/TS 16949 quality standard. DeltaBolt’s trademark “Δ” on the fasteners not only affirms that this is the original but also vouches for

the guaranteed quality that comes with these lockbolts and locking rings. DeltaBolt can also be produced to customer specifications depending on the volume ordered. DeltaBolt is a cost-beneficial alternative with numerous advantages to welded or bolted connections where high strengths are needed for certain applications. Unlike joining methods that have a thermal impact on the connectors and also frequently lead to the fastener warping, high-strength lockbolt systems are capable of joining components together with little heat, without delay and without damaging the component’s surface. The lockbolts offer a significant advantage over conventional welding techniques: they are also able to permanently join different materials, such as high-strength steel, stainless steel and aluminium.

CSS SUPPORT SYSTEMS VISIT US

Supporting cable management sales

E17

Specialising in cable management products and the required associated fixings, CSS Support Systems has seen its business grow and develop into manufacture. Torque speaks with Managing Director Chris Corbett. SS Support Systems was founded by the Corbett family in 2005, specialising in cable management products and associated fixings. Initially, the firm worked out of small 5,000ft² unit. Managing Director Chris Corbett picks up the story: “CSS was set up by myself, my brother Daniel, my wife Michelle and my dad, who has now retired. We started on Trinity Road in a much smaller unit and we have since moved to Hawthorn Business Park. The business has grown consistently year-on-year and we are now employing over 30 people.” Cable management products are the major product line, with the fastener side an off-shoot of the main business. Fasteners contribute £3 million turnover, contributing to a total £17-18 million turnover for CSS. “We do a lot of business with the fastener sector, like the fixing wholesalers and the fastener wholesalers. We predominantly sell the strut, but obviously for every bit of strut you sell you need fasteners to put them up.” CSS factory in West Bromwich is backed by smaller depots in Warrington and Glasgow, which serve the local markets, with the Warrington site also including offices for sales and accounts. While it has no immediate plans to do so, CSS has not ruled out opening further depots in the future.

C

A SHREWD MOVE TO MANUFACTURE A key milestone in the development of CSS came in 2010, when it added to its import and distribution business with manufacturing – an area it has continued to invest in. “We have spent a lot of money on the manufacturing side so we have more capacity, adding an extra line this year,” Corbett tells Torque Magazine. “Now we are picking up bigger contracts and

42

torque-expo.com

bigger orders – and we find that more people want to buy British.” CSS does some export, with customers in Malta and closer to home in Ireland, where business is strong for the manufacturer – so busy that it hasn’t ruled out setting up a depot there. In hindsight, the shrewd move to become a manufacturer has paid off: “We’re now at a stage when 60% of our business comes from manufacturing. Business is really good. We are really busy. It’s looking like it is going to be another record year, if the final four months can carry on as the first eight have done. “I’m really glad we moved into manufacturing when we did. Without it, it could have been a struggle. It’s one sector where you can really do well at the moment.” The West Brom manufacturing site includes around 35,000ft² of space but another move may yet be on the cards. “We are getting to the stage where we need to start looking at something bigger, particularly now we have the three lines of production.” As a manufacturer, raw material price rises – and the exchange rate – have had an impact on the firm, but thanks to fasteners being an add-on product for CSS (and having a back up supply in India) the extended lead times for Far East fasteners have not had a significant impact on the business. The electrical market is one of the strongest for CSS, which also serves the mechanical sector, fixings, ducting and air conditioning. “We only sell through wholesalers, we don’t sell to the end user – it’s completely through the distribution market,” Corbett adds. Looking ahead, the firm is firmly focused on cable management and the associated products needed to fit them. “We are not looking to expand into any more areas. We are focused on being leaner and producing more products so we can increase our turnover within our existing range.” Tel: 01925 850333 sales@csslimited.com www.csslimited.com

CASE STUDY VICTORY & MERLIN BUSINESS SOFTWARE

VICTORY WINS WITH MERLIN

Victory Fasteners is a respected fastener manufacturer based in the West Midlands, UK. 95% of its product ranges is purchased from both European materials and quality assured European manufacturers. The company is helmed by experienced Directors who have managed several successful firms, with a combined 75 years of industry experience. With the business rapidly growing, Victory Fasteners soon found itself in need of a versatile effecting ERP system. Torque quizzed the business on the process of how it chose Merlin Business Software as its software partner, details on the installation and what it has meant for the business… How did you come to choose Merlin Business Software for Victory Fasteners? We came across Merlin while exhibiting at the Torque-Expo 2016 show. During this time, we were already exploring other ERP systems that could assist with the business’ continued growth. Merlin was very confident in being able to customise their system to suit Victory Fasteners principle values of having ‘fully traceable’ stock. We arranged a demonstration and haven’t looked back since. Was it a daunting move to migrate the business to Merlin? Integration of any new system can seem daunting to any business – the thought of days without trading if something goes wrong always plays on your mind. However, with careful consideration and backup plans in place, we were able to put ourselves in the hands of Merlin’s support system and onsite teams, confident that we were in a position where, in any instance, we had things covered.

54

torque-expo.com

When was the Merlin system implemented at Victory? We officially went live with Merlin at the end of April after extensive planning and training seminars and the build-up was steady. The installation of a training system onsite gave our employees the ability to learn during their day to day activities. Merlin opened the way for our sales, processing and manufacturing divisions to have full visibility on available stock, current jobs and all stock movements at any given moment. What difference has it made to the business? Our previous system was very limiting in terms of product visibility. Victory Fasteners had grown since its implementation and the system was no longer able to process at the speed or capacity required of an expanding business, often affecting the productivity of the user. Merlin has changed our outlook and processes, enabling us to process paperwork faster and more efficiently, with 100% fully lot traceable product, giving us the most effective view on batch and origins. Merlin has opened our product visibility and enabled us to produce job cards at the touch of a button, increasing our manufacturing process dramatically as previously this was a manual operation. We are able to trace stock / processes throughout various stages of manufacture, all without moving away from the screen. Most importantly, the Merlin system has given Victory Fasteners a secure platform to help achieve and assist in the continued growth of our future goals. Following on from that, have there been any specific benefits of using Merlin? The system has improved employee efficiency in every department. The ease of the system and the integration into Victory Fasteners has created benefits for all areas.

CASESTUDY_Victory_and_Merlin_TOR027_Sept18.qxp 14/09/2018 12:24 Page 2

Would you recommend Merlin to similar businesses? Definitely. As previously mentioned, the integration of the system was easy, we were fully supported throughout its implementation and it has greatly increased our Company’s efficiency. THE VIEW FROM MERLIN Ashley Jones, Merlin’s Sales & Marketing Director, said: “Vic Waddison and his team at Victory Fasteners have been a model customer to work with, which reflects the smoothness with which they achieved a successful go-live, and we look forward to a long-lasting business relationship with them. It’s great to hear that Victory are already benefiting from the improved efficiency that Merlin has delivered and I am confident that this will only grow as they use more and more features of the software. “We are very much looking forward to exhibiting at Torque-Expo 2018 (stand B22) and exploring how Merlin can deliver similar benefits with other attending businesses.”

COMMENT_FEIN_TOR_Sept18.qxp 14/09/2018 12:27 Page 1

TORQUE COMMENT

FEIN UK SPECIALIST AND INVENTOR OF FASTENING EQUIPMENT Ahead of their appearance at Torque-Expo Coventry 2018, where they will be on-hand to advise on application pain points at work or on-site, the FEIN team shares their take on modern day wrench drivers and automotive tools…

EIN could be said to be the father of electric power tools, having created the first portable hand drill in 1895. A lot has changed since that first model, with FEIN’s fastening machines developing into two reputable categories; the cordless range of screw and wrench drivers, and the cordless AccuTec. Starting with the cordless wrench drivers, how has the drill evolved in over 120 years? Many generations on, the user can now expect a brushless motor as standard, which considerably improves the service life of the machine. Further, a user can expect numerous torque adjustable settings to match screw size, a machine supported by 12 volt, 18 volt or high power batteries and above all the user should expect a superb torque and overall power output, up to 290Nm. For any end user in the market for a cordless wrench driver, regardless of what colour preference they have, they should take a closer look at the technical aspects of the machine, including the overall input and output in terms of power. Whilst many tools may be advertised with a strong marketing headline promoting all kinds of epic power credentials, many machines lose much of this energy during operation, due to the copper content within the motor. FEIN solved this issue some years ago, using significantly extra copper in the motor to retain most of the energy being generated by the motor, and passing this through the tool correctly. In fact not only does the input and output match up

F

56

torque-expo.com

nicely, but the drivers typically offer up to 10% extra torque when reverse running. AccuTec is far more specialised, specifically engineered for large scale assembly lines, like those found in the automotive industry. The baton offset screwdrivers provide up to 60Nm of torque to deal with screw connections in hard-to-reach places, whilst the ASM screw gun range runs up to 12Nm of torque without loss of speed until that torque setting is met. FEIN quality is renowned in the industry, with parts of its drill/AccuTec range tested and trialled to deliver up to one million screw connections. Why? Our German engineers demand the best quality and unless the prototypes meet stringent testing standards in the lab, and in the field with the community on-site, they won’t ever make the production line. FEIN is making its Torque-Expo debut this October at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, so why not find out if the brand is all it says it is in terms of quality? We will be available to demonstrate and support you with your various fastening question, on stand D13. For further advice or information, the team can be contacted on 01327 308730 or via dan.wood@fein-uk.co.uk Alternatively check out FEIN’s fastening website area for information on the wrenches, AccuTec and other fastening solutions it offers: fein.com/en_uk/fastening/

What links Usain Bolt to safety in the workplace? Beeswift explains all‌ usculoskeletal (MSK) injuries are the largest cause of sickness absence accounting for 40% of all 9.5 million working days lost. One in eight of the working population reported having an MSK injury – the majority of the injuries are back and lower limb. 64% of the population suffer from foot pain. However, many MSK problems are manageable and can be prevented with the correct insoles. Enertor has teamed up with Beeswift to offer a revolutionary insole, which is proven to reduce pain and prevent injuries in the workplace, saving money and improving employee engagement and productivity. These insoles are worn by global sports superstar, Usain Bolt, who endorsed the manufacturer, after suffering for many years from MSK injuries. Enertor Comfort and Protect insoles incorporate the revolutionary D3O shock absorbing material. By absorbing the shock and reducing ground effect forces, Comfort and Protect insoles reduce pain and prevent MSK injuries. Enertor insoles have been independently tested by SATRA,

M

Creative Medical Research and the British Army. SATRA tests proved that Enertor insoles powered by D3O provided 44% more shock absorption than standard insoles. In tests with sufferers of Plantar Fasciitis (foot and heel pain) conducted by Creative Medical Research, 91% reported an improvement in their overall pain while 75% of new suffers agreed Enertor insoles helped to heal their Plantar Fasciitis. Extensive trials with the British Army, published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, showed that the prototype Enertor insoles reduced lower limb injuries by 66%. As a result, Enertor Comfort and Protect insoles were created and are the only full-length shock absorbing insoles mandated by the British Armed Forces. Enertor insoles are a Class One Medical Device and are available in sizes 3-14 as either a full, half and heel cup insole.

ATLAS COPCO

Low reaction from Atlas Copco From low reaction tools that pack a powerful torque punch to VR demos, traceability, operator safety and zero defects, Atlas Copco’s summer roadshow was packed with innovation and glimpses of the future of production… ere’s a handy statistic to provide a sense of Atlas Copco’s scale and success, 3 in 4 cars in the world are assembled with its tools. With its Smart Connected Assembly concept and new tech in the form of Turbo Tight torque management technology and Low Reaction DC tools, Atlas Copco is clearly keen to retain and consolidate dominance in the automotive sector and beyond. New innovations were showcased by the Swedish tool giant this summer at its roadshow which rolled across Europe, including Portugal, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Sweden and more besides. It visited the UK at the prestigious Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, which is where Torque Magazine hopped aboard to hear from Atlas Copco’s experts, including UK General Manager, David Embley (pictured below). Before visitors got hands-on time with new products and saw VR training techniques up close, Embley kicked off with an opening presentation detailing Atlas Copco’s ‘Six Pillars of Value’, covering “the areas in which we can add value to our customers”. The six elements include increased uptime through preventative maintenance, reduction in defects, new product introduction, reduced costs through virtual stations, improved productivity through reduction in training and energy use with multiple wireless tools running on one assembly process controller. Feeding into the six pillars is Atlas Copco’s Smart Connected Assembly concept. Embley explained the idea at the heart of it as “a focus on achieving quality, productivity and traceability in complex assembly processes.” “We look to maximise productivity and increase customer efficiency, whilst reducing human error and ensuring operator safety. Our customers need a tangible return on investment, which is why we introduced our Six Pillars of Value.” Clearly the concept has implications for Atlas Copco’s key markets. “Whilst we have a majority market share within automotive manufacturing, we are also focused on increasing our penetration in wider general industry sectors such as aerospace,” Embley tells Torque.

H

Distribution & customisation The firm has had a presence in the UK since 1919, making it the oldest Atlas Copco customer centre in continuous operation outside Scandinavia. Its HQ is in Hemel Hempstead with a training academy and fully DAAKS accredited calibration laboratory. A growing proportion of Atlas Copco’s UK business is conducted through key distribution partners with some of its general industry business through specialist distributors. And business is good, according to Embley and Atlas Copco’s latest financials. Globally, the firm secured record orders, revenues and operating profit in Q2 2018 with growth in all major geographical regions. When it comes to the assembly line, customisation is king, Embley tells Torque: “Every production line is different. We’re seeing increasing complexity and manufacturers require more than general tooling.” Atlas Copco UK’s Tool Management Centre (TMC) engineers offer on-site support and even work to customers’ shift patterns so they’re on hand whenever they are needed. A wealth of new product and tech includes new Low Reaction tools and TurboTight, a torque management technology that significantly cuts back on the kickback. With the future of the assembly line looking to feature humans and robots working side-byside, the truck also demoed collaborative robot or ‘Co-bot’ working. That kickbackreducing tech will enable robots to handle and deliver considerably more torque than before. There’s more from Atlas Copco in our Torque Tools Focus elsewhere in this magazine. JCS HI-TORQUE

A new fixing for duct work A versatile and easy-to-use fixing solution for a wide range of applications has been unveiled by JCS Hi-Torque. rom its factory in Suffolk, England, JCS has been manufacturing worm drive hose clamps for over 50 years. With a reputation for strength, quality and durability, JCS has used its knowledge and expertise to develop JCS BANDING, a new fixing solution for use on duct work, HVAC installations and many other applications in the building, construction and advertising industry. JCS banding is a cut-to-size system with a unique double headed connector. This double headed connector is a new approach to banding systems and offers the quickest and simplest installation with no requirement for any specialist tools or personnel training, the firm says It is a simple three step process and the only tools required are a driver and cutters: • Engage the banding into one end of the connector • Measure and cut the banding to length • Secure In place by engaging the free end into the other end of the connector.

F

Not only is JCS banding quick and simple to use, but it also offers a safer solution when working at heights, as is more often the case with ducting installations. With no small loose parts, the risk of dropping components and injuring others on site is dramatically reduced along with the other benefit of cost reduction from less lost parts. Ultimately JCS Banding has been designed as a competitive yet quality focused product. The perforated band fully engages with the deep threaded screws in the connectors, which ensures the band can never slip or pull through and can be tightened to a higher torque for a safer and more secure installation. The coiled band comes in a specially designed dispenser pack in 10 and 30m lengths. By making it easier to only dispense the required amount the packaging reduces waste and costs. Connectors and banding are available In Zinc Plated Mild Steel and 304 Stainless Steel which can be used in external and corrosive environments. www.jcshi-torque.co.uk

Mechatronic:

The quest for error-free production As manufacturers target zero defects for their production lines, Atlas Copco explains how the Mechatronic System can help them achieve that goal… elping achieve error-free production lines is a major objective of Atlas Copco and its unique Mechatronic system enables manufacturers get closer to this goal. By combining proven mechanical tooling with the latest in wireless and digital technology, Mechatronic delivers the best of both worlds. As well as providing the same reliability, performance and ease of use of its standard mechanical wrenches, the addition of monitoring hardware and software offers significant value to the whole production process by ensuring greater accuracy, traceability and quality assurance, all in one package. Whilst still used as a standard mechanical wrench, the Mechatronic system (MWR) adds a digital interface to the wrench, effectively building in a quality assurance process to the actual tool. MWR enables the wrench to monitor three critical areas, namely that the correct angle has been achieved, the right torque has been applied and that the operator has released the joint at the optimum time. As easy to use as the click wrench it is based on, the Mechatronic system gives the operator a clear physical (LED green light) indication when the required torque is achieved. Sending the tightening data wirelessly to the complementary Focus controller means that any faults can be identified instantly and therefore rectified before they become a costly production issue and everything is audited and traceable down to a single screw. It can also be used to verify that all required elements of a joint are present and correct, avoiding missing washers and checking screw quality. Mechatronic uses a gyro signal to measure operator movement, thereby increasing the accuracy of angle readings and improving controlled tightening. By narrowing down the angle window, the most common assembly problems such as damaged threads, re-hits, premature shut-offs and torque overshoot can be avoided, thereby improving productivity and quality.

H

Mechatronic combines mechanical tooling with the latest wireless and digital technology

Flexibility is obviously a key consideration for many manufacturers, where there are multiple assembly lines. Mechatronic facilitates a wireless connection of up to 10 wrenches, as well as programmable jobs and two wrenches in simultaneous operation. Commenting on the many advantages of Mechatronic, David Embley, General Manager, Atlas Copco Tools UK, said: “Our ultimate goal is zero defects in the manufacturing process with 100% traceability. With increasing complexity of products and demand for higher quality at the lowest cost, in the quickest time, manufacturers are under pressure to minimise any negative impact on production. “Atlas Copco’s Smart Connected Assembly philosophy is focused on achieving quality, productivity and traceability in all assembly processes and as part of that, our Mechatronic system is designed to maximise productivity and increase customer efficiency, whilst eliminating human error and ensuring operator safety.” W www.atlascopco.com/en-uk T +44 (0)1442 261202 / +44 845 601 0001 E ToolsUK_info@uk.atlascopco.com

STAHLWILLE

RAISING THE TORQUE STANDARD Torque flew to Wuppertal for a guided tour of STAHLWILLE’s factory and training centre, getting to grips with the past, present and future of the handtool and torque specialist… TAHLWILLE has been manufacturing torque tools in Germany for decades and hand tools for even longer. The company was founded by Eduard Wille in 1862, when it produced nails, tongs and other simple metal products at its base in Wuppertal, where it is still located. 156 years after Mr Wille decided he liked the way his name sounded with steel/stahl, Torque joined the company at its Kontor customer and training facility. The Kontor is part of one of the company’s oldest buildings with many nods to the past – you can still see the window where staff used to pick up their weekly wage. Now, the ‘branch office’ has been completely refurbished, featuring product islands, demo products and swanky conference facilities. It’s the ideal place for STAHLWILLE’s UK Technical Sales Manager Chris Rose to talk us through some of the firm’s many innovations in torque tools and beyond. Our guide, a STAHLWILLE staffer of 11 years, fills us in on the manufacturer’s quest to address the common flaws of torque wrenches. For example, after using a torque wrench, it’s ideal to wind it back to its starting position to relieve the spring – springs compressed for longer periods require enough time to, er, spring back into place, which can impact on the accuracy of the next target torque setting. And in a busy workshop, it’s unlikely everyone will take the time to set a wrench back to zero. That’s why STAHLWILLE came up with a hardwearing flexible beam instead of a spring to use in its mechanical torque wrenches. Negating the need for the timeconsuming reset to zero, the mechanism is only under load when it is in use. Furthermore, the flexible beam has allowed STAHLWILLE to develop a quick adjuster so the wrench is faster to set in the first place. It’s the kind of innovation you can find in the MANOSKOP® 730 Quick. How the user uses traditional torque wrenches can affect the consistency of torque achieved in other ways too, not least in how the target torque is set. STAHLWILLE’s integrated magnifying glasses on the scales of the 730 Quick

STAHLWILLE's ISO 6789: 2017ready automatic perfectControl calibration system

torque wrenches improve readability, irrespective of the angle of sight, while fine scale indicators on the MANOSKOP® 730N and 730 Fix ranges help further reduce ambiguity when setting the target torque with improved scale resolution. Electronic torque tools are easy to set precisely, but are off-putting for those users who want to ‘feel the click’ rather than listen to the beep when in action. So STAHLWILLE’s electromechanical options provide the tactile benefit of the click while in use, as seen in the MANOSKOP® 730D and 714 models, for example. The versatile 714 can also measure fastenings by both torque and tightening angle. It’s all part of STAHLWILLE’s drive for more consistent tightening through product innovation. STAHLWILLE is seeing huge growth in electronic products and – in a nice touch for a 156 year old company – its hand tool sales are not too shabby either, with more hand spanners sold last year than ever in its long history. Other developments include STAHLWILLE’s new MANOSKOP® 730R VDE torque wrench, part of its wider VDE range and ideal for the expanding electric and hybrid vehicle sector. These tools can work safely in live environments up to 1,000 volts and – crucially – the VDE

torque wrench can be readjusted without being dismantled, so it doesn’t have to be sent to be retested after calibration to ensure it is still VDE safe. RAISE THE STANDARD Clearly one of the biggest recent developments in the world of torque has been the ISO 6789:2017 standard, something STAHLWILLE was ready for with its motorised calibration rig, the automatic perfectControl calibration system, which was already available off the shelf. When it came to calculating measurement uncertainty, the previous ISO 6789:2003 standard was not specific enough, which led to different interpretations, with variations between different labs and nations. The new standard takes a more explicit approach, stating the detailed measurement procedures and the uncertainties a laboratory must consider as part of a calibration (ISO 6789-2:2017) and helpfully splitting the standard into two halves, allowing the customer to opt for a Declaration of Conformance during use to ISO 6789-1:2017 if they deem it suitable for their requirements, rather than a calibration with measurement uncertainties to ISO 6789-2:2017. STAHLWILLE is providing further assistance to calibration labs by updating its

The 766 DAPTIQ is designed for integration into projects and any IT system standard and the complexities it brings, so it’s already-on-the-market perfectControl calibration system is ready to go for ISO 6789:2017. The unit itself keeps calibration simple – only the torque transducers need calibrating – which can be performed by approved labs. The manufacturer has its own in-house DAkkS calibration lab (where it uses state of the art electronic transfer references) but it is not looking to drive calibration services back to itself. In fact, the lab is currently so busy that it is operating shifts and there’s potential for it to treble in size. PROJECT INTEGRATION In March, Cologne show visitors will have seen or tried out mixed reality-enabled fastener tightening on the STAHLWILLE stand. Visitors to Kontor also have chance to try out the AR headset and get to grips with the Industry 4.0 potential of the MANOSKOP® 766 DAPTIQ. The 766 is closely based on

STAHLWILLE’s 714, but is designed for integration into projects and any IT system that a customer wishes, like a HT System for example. 766 sequences can be programmed so that they only perform a specific order of fastening to reduce errors. And the 766 documents, without additional user interaction, the real final torque, not only the target torque, unlike certain other systems, providing the kind of enhanced traceability that the automotive and aviation industries are increasingly keen on. The network works indoors at the moment, but the minds at STAHLWILLE are now looking to take the technology outdoors so – for instance – it can be used on top of a wind turbine. IN PRODUCTION Alongside all the cutting edge torque technology and lab work, STAHLWILLE’s production halls embrace both the old and the new, fittingly for a firm boasting a century and a half in production. Older traditional machines work alongside fresh out-of-the-box automated systems, the latter a significant space saver. STAHLWILLE products are made in Germany. Forging has moved out of Wuppertal to a STAHLWILLE Group company (SWM, SteinbachHallenberg) in the East of Germany. Production processes, like forging, hardening/tempering, plating, have been kept in-house to retain as much control as possible. Not only has STAHLWILLE retained production right where it

began, but it is also still a familyowned business that prides itself on its long-term approach that invests in its people and has a low turnover of staff. It boasts a successful apprentice scheme, and places are hotly contested by school leavers from the surrounding area. It is something the UK operation has emulated, recruiting apprentices into the company and supporting them with their studies. Cutting edge torque tech Following our in-depth Stahlwille profile, here are some more torque tool providers serving the market.

ADVANCED CARBIDE TOOLING: SLOKY SLOKY is pitched as the world’s smallest torque wrench adaptor. Brought to you by Advanced Carbide Tooling LTD, this innovative design gives a range of Pre-set torque adaptors from 0.1nm to 18nm designed exclusively for the hand tool market. What makes the SLOKY brand really stand out most is its interchangeability. As well as the range of internationally patented adaptors, SLOKY also offers a range of handles to suit the various torque adaptors available, and by adopting the standard ¼’ hex socket in the front end of the adaptor, they can take almost any driver bit you need. Of course, SLOKY also offers its own range of Torx, Torx Plus and Allen key bits, cleverly colour coded with the recommended corresponding torque adaptor, and with each Sloky adaptor hand assembled and Torque tested to DIN EN ISO 6789 both accuracy and quality are assured. In use, when the required torque is reached, there is an audible ‘Click’ and

whilst the handle can still be turned, drive through the SLOKY Adaptor ceases, preventing any accidental over tightening beyond the set torque. The same tool can be used for undoing screws as the Adaptors have a slightly higher reverse torque threshold. ATLAS COPCO Helping safeguard user safety and reducing fatigue are top priorities for Atlas Copco, with the new Low Reaction tools (LRT) improving operator ergonomics and factory optimisation. These battery and DC tools incorporate TurboTight®, a torque management technology that cuts back significantly on the kickback with the tool absorbing the reaction force rather than the operator, boosting productivity and shortening tool cycle times. Other tool innovations include Tensor Pulse fastening strategy, another milestone in the company’s continuous development cycle. The Transducerised Battery Pulse (TBP) based tool includes a hydraulic pulse unit rather than gears and an oil-filled chamber, currently enabling higher torque of up to 55Nm (higher torque levels up to 150Nm are to be launched in the near future) with vibration levels below the minimum standard. Delivering five million pulses before maintenance is required, operating performance is up to five times longer between service intervals, enabling manufacturing businesses to increase production capability, whilst reducing costs. Meanwhile, TrueAngle® tech uses a gyro signal to read operator movement in order to increase the accuracy of angle readings and improving controlled tightening. By narrowing down the angle window, the most common assembly problems such as damaged threads, re-hits, premature shut-offs and incorrect or missing components can be avoided. AIMCO Why is using a transducerized tooling system important? It’s all about the accuracy difference between Transducerized and Current Controlled tooling, writes AIMCO... Current Controlled (Open Loop) tools are a dedicated system consisting of a tool, cable and controller. They are precalibrated in a lab using an external transducer on a rundown fixture. The tool is operated on the external transducer at set torque points and the amount of current supplied by the system is matched up to the torque reading of the external transducer. The lab will input these torque readings which the system translates into the amount of current it needs to supply to achieve the amount of torque required. Unfortunately current controlled tooling is an open loop design. Once the tool is removed from the external transducer there isn’t any true torque feed back into the system. The system simply supplies the per-set current and the operator has to accept the torque was properly applied. However a number of things affect the torque output but not the torque readings of the system. Temperature, gear wear, voltage and motor performance all affect the torque output but the system is unable to adapt and compensate for these changes, it’s simply all guesswork. It’s also a dedicated system so something as simple as changing out the cable voids the calibration. Transducer Controlled (Closed Loop) tools like the AcraDyne HT system from AIMCO have the transducer built into the tool itself at the output shaft. The transducer is constantly measuring the torque in real time and feeding that back into the system. Variations of temperature, gear ware, voltage and motor performance

do not affect the accuracy of the transducerized system because they all happen before the transducer. The system will simply keep applying power until the transducer reads the requested torque before shutting off. The AcraDyne HT system also records date, time and rundown information of up to 32 different preset torque jobs stored in the controller. All the recorded torque data is easily exported to Excel. It has a modular design, unlike current controlled systems that are a dedicated system. The calibration of a transducerized tool is in the tool itself not the system. Tools, cables and controllers are all interchangeable. When the annual calibration is due you only need to send the tool, not the whole system. If your customer is relying on accurately applied torque, take the guesswork out of the equation and use a closed loop transducerized system for unparalleled accuracy, AIMCO concludes. www.aimco-global.com

COAST

SHINING A LIGHT ON COAST Whilst torches & head-torches sell all year round, there is no doubt that the Q3/Q4 Autumn/Winter period is a peak-selling opportunity for all COAST stockists. Torque highlights a key seller for multiple sectors… ince its introduction to the UK market in July 2012, USA torch brand COAST claims that there are now well over a million COAST torches and head-torches in daily use in the UK & Ireland. How has the brand come so far in so short a time? “The answer to that question depends on which market sector you are interested in,” explains Managing Director Tim Sparrow. “However there are a few reasons common to all areas.” COAST is one of the few true dedicated specialists in the sector, with one of the widest ranges anywhere in the World.

S

SUPERIOR BEAM QUALITY COAST products are specifically designed to produce ‘superior beam quality’ to most other brands, backed by over 300 worldwide patents. Without question, the quality of the beam is the single-most important feature of any torch or headtorch and users of COAST will see a demonstrable difference to others, says Sparrow. This is the main factor that drives purchases of additional COAST products and recommendation to other workmates, friends and family which powers the momentum and growth of the brand. As a specialist in this sector, COAST thinks closely about who is using its products and how COAST can make their jobs & lives easier and more effective? The specialist doesn’t only think about optimum light output, but also beam quality, beam distance, one-handed focus adjustment, beam-locking, coloured LED and ultra-violet options, flexible re-charging systems which allow torches to remain in constant use whilst re-charging low batteries and extended run-times which allow for use across a complete day or night shift.

68

torque-expo.com

BEST FOR PURPOSE / BEST FOR BUDGET As one of the world’s largest-selling torch brands, COAST has a competitive edge to be able to supply “best for purpose products at best for budget terms”. With product options in the range that provide a best fit for end-user requirements and being one of the largest torch brands in the world, COAST has the ability to make the best use of their budgets. We asked Sparrow for a typical example of a best seller in the industrial sector. Instead of a fancy and expensive product, he picked out a simple Inspection Torch named G19, which actually sells at £9.95 to the end-user, before even a penny discount is deducted by the COAST dealer. “The G19 is a proven massive-seller across the industrial sector and also all other main trade sectors such as building, plumbing, electrical and automotive. “It’s important dealers know that this is a product we know they will sell and we know their customers will love. “There are a lot of ‘why not reasons’: It is a perfect size and weight to fit inside any overalls, shirt or blouse pocket, with a clip to keep it neatly stored there. It takes a single AAA battery to run so it is extremely economical in use, it is covered by a comprehensive 5 Year Warranty and the LED chip inside it is guaranteed for 100,000 hours of service life. It costs a maximum of £9.95 which is within the reach of anyone and also within the scope of multiple purchases for larger users! “The other part of the G19’s appeal & success is not actually discovered until after the customer has purchased the product and taken it out of the pack, that being the superb, patented COAST Inspection Beam pattern, which almost always exceeds the users’ expectations”.

“The beam is specifically designed for close-up inspection work, with a perfect circular beam with complete uniformity across the beam, meaning there are no bright spots which may reflect/dazzle the user in tight spaces and no shadows/dark spots which may confuse or limit the clarity of what is being inspected.” “COAST inspection beams also have exact edges which give perfect contrast to the work target illuminated by the circular beam whilst then cutting-off any view outside of this so that the focus is entirely on the object being inspected.” “We sell many tens of thousands of these inspection torches per year, in many cases every one we sell ends us selling two or three more to workmates, friends or family by personal recommendation.” All COAST products are supplied with a comprehensive 5 Year Warranty, with a rapid 48 turn-around of repaired or replaced warranty products. NEW TECH, NEW PRODUCTS, NEW POS To capitalise on peak selling season for torches, COAST has put together a selection of promotional offers and initiatives designed to aid and generate additional sales and profit for all COAST dealers throughout this key period. This is the time of year that COAST plans to introduce most of its new products and 2018 is no exception with the launch of three new torches, three new headtorches and two new clip-on lights. All new and existing COAST dealers are further supported with the option of 5% added early bird discount terms applicable to a wide range of new and existing products for initial stock orders placed before 31 October 2018, adding profit directly into the pockets of COAST dealers new and old.

Another element of the promotional package is a range of ten assorted counter display units covering a wide range of the most popular-selling COAST products. All of these pack selections also qualify for 5% early bird terms, subject to initial order for delivery before 31 October.

COAST

SUPER DEAL – VALUE ADDED COMBO PACKS Every year, COAST puts together one special super deal pack, which includes a free bonus COAST product to be passed directly onto the end-user, in order to stimulate added sales and customer satisfaction, all at no added cost to the COAST dealer. This year’s offer is based around the popular POLYSTEEL 400 Torch, featuring an improved light output of 440 lumens, high-med-low modes for optimum battery life, adjustablefocusing from long-range spot (210 metres) to ultra-wide flood beam and also including the heavy-duty dropproof, crush-proof, water-proof design which makes this product ideal for tough industrial use. The dealer and end-user customer pay only for the POLYSTEEL 400, whilst receiving their choice from two high-quality COAST products, either the COAST G19 Pocket Inspection Torch or FL14 Head-Torch completely free. The whole deal also comes in an attractive CDU Display, to further aid awareness and sales in-store. TOWER OF POWER This unique display concept has been designed specifically for head-torches. Introduced two years ago, the ‘Tower of Power’ has already proven to increase the interest, awareness and sell-out of head-torches via all COAST dealers who have already taken advantage of this opportunity. The display concept works with every and any of the 18 headtorches in the COAST range. The selection is purely up to the individual dealer/stockist to choose. Every head-torch has a sensible qualifying order level, mainly four to six pieces per model, which are then supplied with ‘a TOWER OF POWER level’, fitted complete with a free demo head-torch of that model. Details of the specific model are also included on the front of each layer, with the relevant performance specs for each. Each ‘layer’ neatly stacks together to build

The quality of the beam is the single most important quality of any torch or head torch ‘a vertical tower’, which gives the headtorches great exposure in store if placed on a counter or near a till, also enabling the customer to easily try out and compare all of the different models. It is also a very good use of space as it takes up very little surface area. The Dealer also has the chance to add further models/layers later on either when wishing to extend their range or simply when existing stocks of other models run down. POS DISPLAY STANDS A range of floor standing (pictured) and counter display stands are also available FOC subject to qualifying orders. In addition the COAST Rechargeable Video Blade which gives an on-demand demonstration video of various Coast products in action, when pressed by customers in-store. Running for up to 500 times in-between charges, this flexible demonstration/sales aid can either be mounted onto any display wall or in conjunction with Floor Display Stands. To gain the best overall use and benefit from this extensive package of support options many COAST dealers like to mix and match with different aspects from the various selections along with other topups of existing products if not already included in the promo packages. Any combination of all these different parts counts together towards FOC display stands and materials, therefore often obtaining additional benefit of free POS without any additional expenditure or effort. www.coastportland.com

FOCUS IRONMONGERY

THREE LIONS SUCCESS DELAYS SALES Torque catches up with IronmongeryDirect Managing Director Wayne Lysaght-Mason on the state of the market, pricing pressures, late ordering and how the World Cup affected its summer sales…

HOW’S BUSINESS IN 2018? IronmongeryDirect continues to see double digit growth in 2018. We continue to see our market share growing from key generalist players, due to our extensive range offering and wider choice of designs and finishes across all categories. Although we saw a slight slowdown during the World Cup due to England’s success, IronmongeryDirect achieved record sales the week after England were knocked out of the competition. WHAT’S NEW AT IRONMONGERYDIRECT? CONTINUED EXPANSION OF PRODUCT RANGES? We are continuing to grow our product range, taking on circa 1,500 new stock items in the last year, bringing the total to over 16,500. This further cements our position as the leading supplier of ironmongery and related products to the trade in the UK. We still boast the UK’s biggest range of products expanding our range in door furniture, hinges, cabinet hardware, door closers and much more. There is a wide variety of popular finishes available such as brass, chrome, pewter and stainless steel ensuring the customer has everything they need to complete any job. YOU NOW REPORTEDLY OFFER THE LATEST SUNDAY ORDERING TIME IN THE INDUSTRY. WHAT WAS THE THINKING BEHIND THAT? In the digital age where the standard 9-5 working hours are becoming less applicable, IronmongeryDirect is leading the way and evolving its business strategy, placing the customer firmly at the centre. More of our customers are ordering on a Sunday and it is our responsibility to provide them with the service they need. By extending our order cut-off time to 8pm on a Sunday, we are giving them the opportunity to get everything prepped and ordered on a Sunday night so their Monday mornings can be stress free, enabling tradespeople to get on with the job in hand.

With smart phones and tablet computers rapidly changing purchasing habits, the Sunday evening calm is becoming prime time for many tradespeople to get a head start for the following week. HAVE YOU SEEN ANY SURPRISING BEST SELLERS OR SPECIFIC TRENDS OVER THE PAST YEAR? We have seen a rise in popularity for our own exclusive brand range which continues to grow across all categories, providing customers with a bigger variety of options. These include products such as the Touchpoint Ariel Lever Door Handle on Rose Satin Chrome and the Lexi Lever Door Handle on Rose Polished Chrome. We are continually increasing and improving our range of exclusive products. Across our categories and we have many products which are exclusive to IronmongeryDirect. Customers want products they can trust - that is exactly what our exclusive brand products offer. We sell top quality products at fantastic prices, and as masters of our trade we know what works best for the customer, and we have developed our exclusive ranges with their needs in mind. In terms of emerging trends, nearly 30% of UK homeowners now own at least one smart home product and this is reaffirmed by the fact that we are expecting sales of smart technology to more than double this year at IronmongeryDirect. WE’RE SEEING PRICING PRESSURES ACROSS A BROAD RANGE OF SECTORS, INCLUDING THE FASTENER MARKET – IS THE IRONMONGERY MARKET ALSO SEEING PRICE RISES? There is huge pressure in the market on pricing due to continued pressures on exchange rates and material prices. IronmongeryDirect is seeing circa 10% increases from our supplier base. That said, it has always been IronmongeryDirect’s policy to avoid passing on these increases to our customers, hence we are proud that we will not be increasing our prices in the September 2018 catalogue. WHAT’S COMING UP NEXT FOR IRONMONGERYDIRECT? We are aiming to increase our product offering further, and in turn increase our market share. It’s about making sure we continue to thrive as a business, as well as maintaining a high level of service for our customers and to give them what they want, when they want it. That applies to technological advances, how we operate, making sure the infrastructure is there and continuing to deliver our USPs and service promises to our customers. IronmongeryDirect has over 16,500 products available and in stock. Orders can be placed as late as 8pm for next day delivery from Sunday through to Friday and by 4pm on Saturdays. Free, no quibble returns are available on all products.

THE SUMMER FEELGOOD FACTOR IS IT REALLY SUSTAINABLE? Has the prolonged period of warm weather – coinciding with sales growth – distracted us from the bigger picture? Paul Grinsell, Home Improvement Sector Director at the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA), provides his view... ome of the most recent retail sales figures look almost encouraging with sales up 2.1% in the three months to June, which is the biggest increase for over three years. Moreover, it’s clear from looking at the sectors contributing most to this overall rise that the warm summer had a lot to do with the apparent upturn. In small electricals, for example, pick up in air treatment and air cooling was evident in the figures and summer’s traditionally larger scale projects clearly drove growth in tools, workwear, safety wear and protective clothing. This category includes goggles, gloves and boiler suits and according to BHETA’s GfK Quarterly POS Index Q2 2018: July 2017 – June 2018, there was sizeable growth of 4.6% compared to the base of January to December 2017. One retailer apparently celebrating the warm conditions was Kingfisher, reporting May to July like for like sales growth of 1.6%, as group sales figures rose to £3.26bn. Drill down into the detail however and the weather which has been such a positive overall may not have done our sector quite so many favours – in fact it may be masking the more serious issues at the heart of retail. While food, drink and garden leisure were basking in the heat of boosted purchasing, many non-food retailers saw a 0.5% decline in the quantities of goods purchased. Even the seemingly unstoppable surge in online retail sales was for once rather static.

S

So, while it’s true that tools sales were up, the home improvement category saw mixed fortunes across the product groups with many of the indoor sectors such as wall and floorcoverings showing a downturn. In fact, strip out the contribution made by barbecues and garden furniture, and overall sales at B&Q actually continued to fall over the summer, something also reflected over the water at Castorama in France. Not even the Homebase situation in the UK with its 42 store closures and the potential loss of around 1,500 jobs is predicted to make any great difference in terms of a resulting B&Q upturn. The moral of the story is that yet again we are seeing unusual or one-off phenomena like freaky weather influencing our shortterm view, while underlying issues continue to need addressing. I don’t mean to sound gloomy and everyone who managed to do well because of the summer deserves a pat on the back for managing stock, promotions and sales to best advantage, but in my opinion, we really need to keep our attention fixed on preparing for the long term. Talking of which, where strategic thought turns away from short term uplifts and focusses on the actual changes in consumer behaviour and the consequent structure of our industry, then we see positives that may actually be more real and more reliable. Kingfisher’s star performer in the UK is of course Screwfix. Tradefocused operations like this and like Toolstation have challenged the way in which consumers access both tools and consumables in the home improvement market and they continue to pull in more business – whatever the weather. In the end it’s all about understanding a) trends and b) how the consumer and professional end user are changing the way they make their purchases. These are the two drivers which will fundamentally boost this sector. Sunshine is just lovely while it lasts! BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION CFA

“BEST FIXINGS PRACTICE” The CFA works to achieve and maintain the highest level of quality and safety in the selection and installation of fixings in the UK… nsuring Best Fixings Practice is the primary objective of the Construction Fixings Association (CFA). The non-profit making trade association works towards that goal through providing extensive technical information and advice, delivering Continued Professional Development (CPD) seminars and competency training to all parties involved in the process of selection, design, installation and certification (all in compliance to BS8539:2012). The CFA’s mission to achieve and maintain the highest level of quality and safety in the selection and installation of fixings in the UK is driven by the use of approved and tested products through the European Technical Assessments and Euronorms. It’s also driven by British Standards in the UK, such as the BS Code of Practice BS85389 2012 “Code of practice of the selection and installation of post-installed anchors in concrete and masonry”.

E

Q&A WITH THE CFA How often do you run the courses? We run a tester course each month at full members’ premises and also run in-house courses for companies with sufficient delegates. Other courses such as installation we run on demand. How often do you update the courses? Whenever new regulations come into force? The courses are based on BS8539:2012 and the ETA approvals. When any changes take place, we update our material. The CFA also sit on European committees and on the BSI committee for BS8539.

COLLABORATION The CFA is not only a leading authority on construction fixings and fastenings in the UK but it is also comprised of the major manufacturers of construction fixings in Europe and with a significant UK presence. It works with many organisations across the construction industry, from major contractors and industry bodies like CIRIA, NHBC and CITB to consulting engineering practices, and design organisations Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Institute of Structural Engineers (IStructE). Working with major contractors has involved the CFA carrying out presentations at large conference events including with Balfour Beatty, Costain and the Crossrail project. Other activities have taken place with meetings and presentations with NHBC, involvement in two working groups on anchors with CIRIA and discussion on anchor training courses with CITB.

The House of Lords recently made the case for more government support for more off-site modular construction. Is off-site construction something that will potentially have implications for the fixings and anchors sector? This is still unclear at present, but our members are very much involved in developing such solutions within the industry.

SEMINARS & COMPETENCY TRAINING The CFA’s work included seminars and competency training, working with the likes of engineering bodies like IStructE to deliver a session in their CPD training programme. The CFA delivers CPD seminars in the areas of: n Appreciation of BS8539 with focus on the roles & responsibilities of a) Specifier b) Contractor c) Supervisor n Design and selection of anchors to EN 1992-4 (currently ETAG Annex C) n Understanding of anchor theory and influencing factors n The ETA approval system and anchor theory n Anchor installation principles and modes of failure (for supervisors)

To achieve the goal of creating high standards of safety and quality, the CFA’s certified training is aimed at creating competence in all aspects of the process and covers: n Theoretical and practical training in Installation of all anchor types n Proof Testing of anchors n Testing of anchors to calculate allowable loads n Understanding of anchor types and installation to supervise and certify completed installations The CFA strives, through all of these daily activities, to raise the organisations’ profile as the expert body in the industry and to drive the message of quality and safety in all of its activities. www.the-cfa.co.uk

Do you have any insight into the implications Brexit may have on ETAs, or is it still too early to tell? This is not clear as yet, by we do know that BSI will still be working with CEN after Brexit and the CFA do not see how our industry could abandon Eurocodes and CE marking concepts.

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION AVVIO

ETA EXPERTISE Avvio offers a full service package supporting customers who want to achieve their own ETA. Following a particularly busy booth at Taiwan Fastener Fair, Torque finds out more directly from the Austrian company. VVIO is an Austrian-based technical laboratory that has been in operation for over 20 years. The company specialises in quality insurance for, and European certifications of, wood screws such as wood building screws, chipboard screws, drywall screws or other screws with wood threads for use for timber constructions. AVVIO conducts different kinds of technical tests for its customers regarding specific customer needs. The firm also conducts ITT (Initial Type Testing) based on AVCP Level 4 under the Construction Product Regulation (CPR) EU No. 305/2011. It supports manufacturers or European traders who bring products into the European market under their own name, to set up and conduct an FPC (Factory Production Control) to make sure that they meet all legal and regulatory requirements of the European Union. Among the tests Avvio can offer are geometric measurements, mechanical tests (eg drilling torque or tensile strength) and the determination of corrosion resistance of products (eg by salt spray tests or by measurement of thickness of plating and coating). Avvio said: “Since the time of the ‘Deutsche Zulassung’ we watched an ongoing reduction of obligatory quality

measures in the European regulatory environment. And it is our strong belief that a substitute for that increasing quality gap is necessary, so we developed our own quality standard for wood screws. To make this high quality standard visible for our customers and for their customers, we designed the quality seal ‘AV24’ (www.av24.at). And it seems, that the market increasingly conforms with our point of view, as an increasing number of European companies are using our seal for their products. “And – last but not least – within the field of certification we also perceived an increasing demand for ETA based CE marks. Therefore we offer an ETA service, where we support customers who want to achieve their own ETA, from the decisioning phase, over the issuance of their own ETA by official EOTA bodies until the usage of the ETA with all regulatory issues that might come up with it. Therefore, we are providing a special full service package. “With our booth in the fair in Kaohsiung – I have to admit – we had unexpected astounding feedback on that service offer from the Asian manufacturers. So we really see ETA to be a hot item in the near future.” www.avvio.at

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION

“WE NEED A RADICAL OVERHAUL OF THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR” The UK is one country that struggles to meet infrastructure and housing needs. The solution may be off-site manufacture, according to the House of Lords. But what will be the implications for suppliers to the sector?

onstruction productivity, labour shortages, lack of housing and infrastructure are among the challenges facing the sector, with possible solutions being discussed at the top level of government in the UK. This summer, the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee published a report ‘Off-site manufacture for construction: building for change’. That report focused on offsite manufacture (OSM) to help to increase productivity in the construction sector while reducing labour demands, improving the quality and efficiency of buildings and reducing the environmental impacts associated with traditional construction. Currently, take up of OSM is varied and somewhat limited across the sector which is, some argue, working with out-dated and unsustainable business models that are not conducive to OSM for construction. OSM requires collaboration between clients, designers and contractors from an early stage but much of the evidence the Committee received painted a picture of a construction sector that is fragmented and lacking in trust. These barriers must be addressed by the sector itself. While OSM could lessen the labour shortage, the different skills required for manufacturing are currently lacking in the UK labour market and must be developed, the report found. OSM will require a combination of skills involving site implementation, digital and procurement. The Government must therefore ensure that young people entering the workplace are equipped with the digital skills needed for modern methods of construction, including off-site manufacture, the Committee added. The Government’s Construction Sector Deal and its stated 'presumption in favour' of OSM, have shown a strong commitment to investing in this area and the Committee welcomes many of the initiatives. The Committee recommends that the Government develop and publish a series of Key Performance Indicators against which the success of the ‘presumption in

C

82

torque-expo.com

favour’ can be assessed. Where the presumption in favour is set aside and a project goes ahead that does not use off-site manufacture, the Government should publish a statement explaining why it has not been used and justifying that decision, the report recommended. In many cases, OSM is suitable for the construction of important social infrastructure such as hospitals and houses. The Committee heard evidence that if the Government is to achieve its aim of building 300,000 houses a year by 2020, OSM would be the only way to meet this target, and that traditional construction methods do not have the capacity to build enough homes. The Government must set out what conditions it will attach to the extra financial support for housing to drive the uptake of off-site manufacture and other innovative technologies. Chairman of the Committee, Lord Patel said: “There are clear and tangible benefits from off-site manufacture for construction which make a compelling case for its widespread use. We heard evidence that OSM could increase productivity in the sector by up to 70%. “The construction sector’s business models are no longer appropriate and are not supporting the UK’s urgent need for new homes and infrastructure. The construction sector needs to build more trust and create partnerships so that companies can work together to improve the uptake of off-site manufacture, and the Construction Leadership Council should provide the necessary leadership. “The role of the Government and the wider public sector is pivotal in a move to greater use of off-site manufacture. The report sets out actions that the Committee thinks the Government should take including implementation of the Construction Sector Deal, committed execution of the ‘presumption in favour’ of off-site manufacture and a greater move to procuring for whole-life value rather than lowest cost.”

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION HYDRAJAWS

ANCHORS AND TECHNOLOGY Ian Craig, Technical Engineer of Hydrajaws, provides his views on the anchor market from their development, to the importance of technology to stay ahead…

t Hydrajaws, we have been producing hydraulic testing machines used to test anchors for the past 30 years. The anchors they tested back then are still around today in one form or another. The idea to use a thread and some form of expanding shield or clip still survives but improvements to design are evolving. The advent of the self drilling screw into concrete has been taken up by most manufacturers and importers, and appears to be growing. New advances in chemical formulation for chemical anchors is not abating and summer and winter resins are available to suit any clients’ specification. In recent years, undercut anchors have really come of age. The ability to install these anchors at shallow embedment has seen them used not only in substrates such as concrete but also in substrates such as glass. This shown by the use of undercut anchors in glass balustrade applications. It will be very interesting to see what further evolution takes place in this field of anchors. The humble plastic or nylon plug is still going strong and keeps getting improvements from various manufacturers and looking at the heavy end of the anchors sector – Rebar is also another area that is being more and more scrutinised (not least because of the emergence of cracked and uncracked concrete). The anchor market, like most markets, goes through cycles of growth and decline. At present the market is showing continued signs of expansion despite an uncertain future. This is attracting the attention of a number of new overseas manufacturers into the UK market, with reports of distribution centres being opened to take advantage of a cautiously optimistic domestic construction market. European Technical Approvals have brought to the forefront

A

the need for recognised testing regimes and procedures. In many instances the end users now look to this as a guide for choosing their fixings. Hydrajaws growth Hydrajaws and its range has had to grow to accommodate these changes in requirements. In the early days, the Model 2000 and its capability of 25/30kN coped with most jobs but for heavier loads the Model 2008 was developed for testing up to 145kN. The Model 2050 came later - a ‘mid to heavy’ range tester able to test up to 50kN whilst still remaining small and portable. Other specialist models such as the 0095 Long Stroke tester was made for testing wood screws and self drilling screws, whilst the Model 0097 test speciality is wire rope. For testing safety lifelines and cables Hydrajaws also developed the Universal Safety Lifeline Cable Tester. To accompany their testers, Hydrajaws had to develop a number of bridges and adaptors to cope with the ever growing number of unusual or difficult testing locations. With new health and safety laws increasing and tightening up, the need for accuracy and proof of test results has become apparent. Hydrajaws have once again responded by developing their Digital Bluetooth system for test gauges. This innovative system provides indisputable results and details of anchor pull tests in a comprehensive PDF format that can be instantly emailed off to customers from a mobile or tablet. The world of anchors is changing and growing constantly. We must keep up with this change and improve our way of ensuring they are safe and secure. Technology is helping us do this and, like at Hydrajaws, we must all look to our IT technicians as much as our engineers to ensure we stay ahead.

INDEX INDEX Fixing Systems manufactures and controls the production process for a wide range of its products to guarantee the maximum quality of the products and an optimum service. INDEX has presented two new catalogues this year, featuring a wide range of fixing and related products. As well as new chemical anchors such as a new pure epoxy range and a new look for the range, the catalogues feature INDEX’s metal anchors. The MT-Anchor family is characterised by an expansive clip. While applying torque to the anchor, the clip expands due to the cone-shaped of the bolt, making high pressure on the inner side of the hole, which originates the necessary friction between the clip and the base material. This family of anchors has the most rigorous certifications and approvals of the market such as EOTA, fire and seismic resistance. TH concrete screw anchors, with Silver Ruspert coating, do not introduce stress into the base material, due to low distances necessary between the anchors and the edge. It can be used in cracked and non-cracked concrete, can be used from medium to high loads and its installation - and uninstallation - is quick and easy. These anchors also have EOTA certificate and fire resistance. Furthermore, the HE-HO and its version with flared lip

86

HE-CL are ETA approved in Option 7 for structural and non-structural uses in concrete. The drop in anchors work by expansion of the anchor body, and are installed by hitting the expansion cone with a hammer and the specific installation tool EXP. INDEX’s extensive range also includes nylon anchors (such as the TN4S) and the T-NUX, another of INDEX’s best plastic anchors, focused on fixing medium loads. The product line-up is further backed by a range of polyurethane foams, versatile products that are used to fill and seal gaps, mount doors or windows and also, as thermal and acoustic insulation. Finally, INDEX’s products and accessories for drywall have been extended. www.indexfix.com

TORQUE COMMENT

Design and fastening of substructures for photovoltaic systems Dr.-Ing. Mirko Neumann of S&P Software Consulting + Solutions GmbH discusses the challenges that photovoltaic systems pose for planning engineers.

ccording to general construction requirements, structural facilities are to be designed and erected in such ways that public order and safety are not endangered. This applies particularly to structures which are assembled subsequently and fastened to already existing buildings. However, experience shows that the necessary proofs of stability and serviceability are often neglected, especially if photovoltaic systems and their substructures are involved. Over the last decade, a multitude of different substructures for photovoltaic systems have been introduced to the market. First of all, there are systems which are positioned parallel to the sloped rooďŹ ng (see Figure 1). They can be fastened directly to the rafters or purlins by roof hooks with wood

tions on the roof and depend on rafter, purlins, laths, or raised bead distances, respectively. The other main group of photovoltaic systems are elevated structures on flat roofs (see Figure 2). They can be positioned more freely, either fastened by ballasting, with concrete screws or hanger bolts respectively, or a combination of both.

Figure 2 The design of the substructures and the proofs which have to be carried out prior to assembling have to be done on the basis of different codes and regulations, depending on the location of the construction the photovoltaic system shall be attached to: see table 1. Even though this suggests that there are sufficient code regulations this is not the case. Most of these codes have been developed for entirely different structures and there are few explicit design regulations for substructures of photovoltaic systems. Therefore, the general codes have to be construed and regulated application cases have to be adapted to nonregulated ones (non-rectangular roof areas, influence of projecting roof superstructures on wind and snow loads, etc). Thus, expert reports and approvals gain importance. Based on code regulations, they provide additional information regarding design and proof calculations. Especially for elevated photovoltaic systems on flat rooves wind channel tests are mandatory. They provide realistic data regarding the resistance

of individual photovoltaic system against wind loads and are the basis of a reliable design. When designing substructures of photovoltaic systems the planner has to fall back on different methods depending on the individual component: see table 2. However, one of the biggest challenges is the allowance for seismic loads. Roof hooks usually do not have considerable resistance against horizontal loads (sloped roof systems) and additional ballasting does not provide additional sturdiness against seismic stress (flat roof systems). Hanger bolts may be the last resort but they cannot be used for all types of photovoltaic systems and, furthermore, have to be used in large amounts to provide sufficient resistance against seismic impacts. In addition, the state of the art regarding required proofs is evolving very fast. Not only do codes and approvals change, but new methods of designing substructures of photovoltaic systems are published in technical periodicals and adapted building regulations. This confronts the planning engineer with the problem of always having to know the latest state of the art and applying it liability-relevantly in the daily planning process - a challenge which cannot be mastered without the help of calculation and design software. These software solutions not only support the planner by applying the latest state of the art but offer the manufacturer of substructures of photovoltaic systems an effective and sustainable means of customer loyalty by ensuring that the available products are applied adequately and liability-minimised. For more details, contact Dr.-Ing. Mirko Neumann S&P Software Consulting + Solutions GmbH by email: m.neumann@sup-scs.de or via www.sup-scs.de

SHOW PREVIEW TMB 2018

TROY STORY At its new time in October, the TMB show is a key date in the engineering distributor calendar. Ahead of the show, Torque takes stock on a busy 12 months for the buying group…

t’s been an eventful year for the Troy buying group, by any measure. The UK-based buying group of independent distributors has won awards, picked up new suppliers, recruited new key staff and - perhaps most significantly of all acquired a fellow buying group just a few months ago. Established in 1986, Troy currently has a varied network of 300 distributors with 400 locations across the UK and Ireland. 400 suppliers are now available to distributors throughout the group, facilitated by the Troy HQ in Barnstaple, Devon as well as the newly acquired THS HQ based in Rotherham. Supported nationally by business development and technical sales teams, the group continues to go from strength to strength. Aiming to support and grow market share for independent distributors, that roll call of suppliers has continued to grow in 2018, with new brands including Bostik, Castle Clothing, East Midland Saw & Tool (EMST), Weldability SIF and Tractel. Troy is also currently working hard to bring you direct deals with global PPE brands’ for 2019 so watch this space.

I

90

torque-expo.com

But don’t just take our word that Troy is expanding. The business was named among the fastest growing South West businesses in the FG75 at the end of last year. Covering companies in Devon and Cornwall, this annual snapshot of the regional economy is put together by local paper Western Morning News. On the list, Troy UK Limited came in at number 60. NEW FACES AT TROY On the recruitment front, Troy UK has increased its Business Development Team with the introduction of Philomena McDermott (Phil) earlier this year, joining with a wealth of experience within industrial supplies having spent the last 20 years managing Scotland & Ireland for Monks and Crane as well as knowledge in key account management, securing major long term contracts within the industrial market. Troy has also recruited a new Purchasing Director, Ashley Collins, who has joined to improve supplier terms and product offering. Further key hires include PPE Category Specialist Wendy Perkins.

TROY ACQUIRES THS After months of negotiation, Troy UK officially acquired Rotherham based buying group THS in April. The significant deal created an independent buying group of substantial scale, assisting both organisations in creating further competitive advantage for their members in the combined challenge of competing with national rivals. Troy was keen to preserve the wellknown THS brand and maintain stability for its current membership base, so the staff team and its operations at the Head Office in Rotherham remain in place for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, rather than THS being simply consumed by Troy, changes to current practices at THS were promised to be subject to careful consideration by the Troy board of Directors. That said, THS Tools has become very much part of the family, now operating as a division of Troy UK Limited, the firm said. At the time, Troy UK CEO Paul Kilbride said: “Our philosophy has always been to invest strategically and responsibly. This exciting new chapter further reinforces our goal to attract the highest quality products and customer service at the best price for our valued membership, thus increasing our buying power to its optimum level. We are delighted to welcome THS to the Troy Group and look forward to prosper and grow for years to come.” SHOW BUSINESS TMB event is back at Silverstone, running over 18 October 2018. Many suppliers will be there, offering deals for the invite-only event. Pitched as the ideal platform for suppliers to meet decision makers in the membership, the event will no doubt be another typically busy show. Stay tuned to the official website for more info on the brands and show offers at www.tmb-show.co.uk

What has the Torque Community been getting up to...?

Industry Q &A Ryan Crawley Marketing Manager Hafren Fasteners How long have you been in the industry? I started with Hafren Security Fasteners a little over two years ago back in June 2016. How did you get started? Jumped straight in the deep end starting as Marketing Manager at Hafren Fasteners but have been supported all the way by the amazing Hafren team and have had the opportunity to learn from the experts. For example, knowing the difference between tamper-resistant & tamper-proof fasteners, many people mistakenly believe they are the same thing, but that is not the case… It’s all about degrees of security; “Resistant” means it’s hard or difficult to remove a fastening device, without the correct tool. “Proof” means it’s next to impossible, without resorting to drilling or cutting the fastener out (which will likely make a lot of noise and attract attention). It’s important to know what fastener type you require for your application. What roles have you had throughout your career? I’ve had a number of roles but have been a marketeer for over a decade. Who has had the biggest influence on your career? Des Morrison was an MD of one of the companies I used to work for and he gave me my first real marketing opportunity. He had a phrase for when a project wasn’t going as fast as I’d like: "You cannot plough a field by turning it over in your mind.” So often, we spend so much time thinking about what we are going to do, sometimes you just have to roll your sleeves up and get on with it! What’s the best thing about working in the industry? Working with an expert team of passionate people; at Hafren Fasteners our vision goes beyond distributing security fasteners, our goal is to stamp out the effects of theft globally. When you examine the reasons we use security fasteners, you’ll find a broad range of industries that benefit from the increased protection that security fasteners provide. Some are highly sensitive industries where people’s lives are at stake. Others are less sensitive but can suffer needless loss from unwanted tampering/access. What have been the biggest changes you’ve seen? The growth and popularity of security fasteners. Even in the short time I have been in the industry I have seen the security fasteners market change from a niche/speciality item to essential everyday element used by manufactures and specifiers globally. Our biggest challenge was that security fasteners were largely unknown to end users, but that is changing with awareness and demand increasing exponentially. There is always demand for security fastener solutions. What are you working on now? Further enhancing and developing our distributor ‘sales toolbox’, enabling Hafren Fastener’s stockists to maximise and develop business opportunities. How can the industry get in touch? A good starting point is via our website www.hafrenfasteners.com, or our social media channels.

Rapierstar’s Karen Avery tackles tough triple challenge he personal experience of living with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) has driven Rapierstar’s Karen Avery to complete a trio of tough physical challenges over a four-month period to raise funds for a leading charity dedicated to helping those with the chronic long-term condition, Action for ME. Earlier in the year, Avery – who heads up the accounts team at Rapierstar – successfully completed the Manchester 10K Great North Run, the Wilmslow Half Marathon and completed the trio events with the demanding 24.5 mile walk to scale the three Yorkshire Peaks. Wholeheartedly supported by everyone at Rapierstar, friends, family and her network of customers and suppliers, Avery undertook these three physically demanding challenges to help raise money to support the work of Action for ME, and also to raise awareness of this often misunderstood condition. ME is a long-term (chronic), fluctuating, neurological condition that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. It affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK, and around 17 million people worldwide, with symptoms typically being debilitating pain and fatigue, plus a range of other symptoms associated5 with postexertional malaise and the body’s inability to recover after expending even small amounts of energy. ERA goes gold ome security expert ERA has achieved the prestigious Investors in People Gold accreditation. ERA first achieved the Investors in People standard in 2014. It measures how well an organisation meets three key criteria, namely leading, supporting and improving, through a performance model of progression. ERA’s Gold accreditation indicates even higher performance in people management, which is bench-marked against global industry practice. Nicky Purba, Human Resources director at ERA explained: “We have worked hard to ensure that ERA’s core values are embedded throughout the entire business and inform every decision we make. “We see a direct correlation to business performance and
