HERE at Torque Towers, we’ve been busy adding resource to both Torque Magazine and www.torque-expo.com over the past few months. We’re now fortunate enough to benefit from not only seasoned industry experts, but also and up-and-coming fresh talent, which is a combination we’re proud to draw upon. The latest recruit is Peter Brett, who many of you will recognise from his 25 years in the tools and related industries and of course his independent product reviews. His arrival at Torque means we’ll now start running reviews of hand and power tools, fasteners and many related products – in fact he was so keen to get out of the blocks, he’s already put together two reviews of HiKOKI products in this very issue (page 44 & 45). If you want to get your product reviewed, contact me at the email address below. Not only that, but this year we’ll continue to run regular and semi-regular contributions from international experts who eat, sleep and breathe their specialisms, from Dr Mirko Neumann of S&P Software Consulting + Solutions and Werner Braun of Austrian technical laboratory AVVIO, to BHETA’s Home Improvement Director Paul Grinsell and Safestart’s Larry Wilson and more besides. In this issue we’ve also got insights from SWG Production into why the construction sector would benefit from using timber more often and Atlas Copco Tools shares insights into the many markets it works with. And we’ll continue to cram opinions and insights into these pages to help keep you abreast of the latest products, trends and thinking in the industry. Finally, if you’re heading to the monster show that is Fastener Fair Stuttgart, we've got a big guide (starting after page 18) to help you get the most of it. Enjoy!

NEWS ANALYSIS

“ONE PLUS ONE CAN EQUAL THREE” Collaboration is key to growth – that’s the message from FBHTM and BHETA following their new alliance, which is to benefit members from both associations…

ust prior to Christmas, The Federation of British Hand Tool Manufacturers (FBHTM) announced it was joining The British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA), effective from 1 January. Torque was interested to explore the mutual benefits for both organisations and talked to FBHTM President, Jonathan Collier of Monument Tools and BHETA’s Executive Chairman, Andrew Weiss. Weiss’ comment that “one plus one can equal three” seems to sum up the sense of mutual possibility that the FBHTM / BHETA alliance aims to provide for members. As Collier explains: “I think there is an appetite for growth from current and former FBHTM members who see this move as an opportunity to re-engage. With Monument Tools having been part of BHETA for ten years, I can certainly confirm that it has helped grow our business, by finding new and untapped opportunities. Growing Federation membership has not been easy as a relatively small group of companies, but through some successful collaborative projects with BHETA, we should see new members wanting to join as they see FBHTM and BHETA together delivering best practice.” FBHTM will remain as a separate entity under the leadership of Jonathan Collier’s Presidency and Collier will sit on the BHETA board of directors. BHETA will effectively act as a secretariat for the Federation and all existing members will become members of BHETA and enjoy all the benefits of the Association. One of the areas of mutual interest for the two organisations acting together is export. Collier continues: “Of particular interest to us is the increased activity that BHETA has undertaken to promote export and we look forward to our members benefiting from this initiative. Brexit is what it is and will be what it will be, but as manufacturers in the UK, while the macro-economic situation of course has an impact, what we do at the coalface is far more important – and BHETA has great networking opportunities to offer. “There are ‘Meet the Buyer’ days, key retail speaker forums and a very proactive export committee. I’m a great believer that suppliers and manufacturers should collaborate more effectively for exporting – we all have bits of knowledge, but don’t necessarily work together as closely as we all could. There are huge export opportunities for FBHTM and BHETA alike – the world is changing pretty quickly, and the opportunities are far greater than in ‘bygone’ days.” Andrew Weiss elaborates: “It makes no commercial sense for members for TA’s to remain small and isolated if there are obvious synergies for two to get together and combine impact and efficiencies and this does not need to result in any

FBHTM members can now benefit from BHETA’s networking opportunities and ‘Meet the Buyer’ days.

loss of identity or sector focus. Export is a big case in point. In March, we have our first Export Conference with Gardenex and PetQuip, part of our ongoing drive to help our members access export markets.” Export is not the only opportunity, however. Weiss explained: “BHETA has just taken full ownership of Brooke House Exhibitions, which runs the Exclusively Housewares and Electrical shows, and we will be working to integrate them into the Association’s range of member opportunities. BHETA is also running National Home Improvement Month in April, now in its second year, to increase DIY and home improvement engagement in the younger and online markets. Another key project is the expansion of our newly launched market data project, which amongst other benefits provides live EPOS information to members, cross-referenced to BHETA’s online Retailer Zone, a comprehensive product and supplier search function for retailers.

“BHETA can also facilitate export grants for major overseas exhibitions, has excellent relations with all the leading retailers, as well as lobbying power when needed and, in this turbulent trading environment, an independent, arbitrating view when members need a little extra help. It makes so much sense that associations with mutual interests combine resources for the greater benefit of members. “In short, together we can create a programme of events, activities and benefits, which the two organisations can share, at a membership cost of between £58 and £125 per month (depending on business size), which in my view is pretty good value!” Further information about BHETA’s events programme, export opportunities and member services can be found on the BHETA website or by contacting the BHETA Member Services Team on 0121 237 1130. www.bheta.co.uk

THE INSERT COMPANY

PLANS EXPANSION In the UK’s fastener heartlands of the West Midlands, Torque Magazine speaks with The Insert Company (UK) Limited’s Sales Director Kevin Broome on the firm’s plans for expansion, bringing in new ranges and how the company’s experience and knowledge is working hand-in-hand with a growing e-commerce sales channel… ith fresh ranges from premium German screw brands, a growing online business and expansion in the offing, The Insert Company (UK) Ltd has been making increasingly large waves in the fastener business. Perhaps best known for threaded inserts for wood, plastic and metal, The Insert Company (TIC) holds stocks in zinc alloy, brass and steel in fasteners and connectors as well as threaded inserts. The firm serves a broad range of industries, including construction, furniture, injection moulding, bed manufacturing and more.

W

Online: Keeping it simple The Insert Company’s online philosophy has been to keep things simple. The company’s transactional website is straightforward, unfussy and highly visual. It’s a policy that has been paying dividends, says Sales Director Kevin Broome. “We had our best month online ever last November and 20% of the business is now made online,” he tells Torque Magazine. “We use lots of images on the site because people recognise product pictures. They may call a product by a few different names, depending on who you speak to.” Online sales channels like eBay are important to the firm too, but despite the growth of business through the internet, Broome places plenty of importance on human interaction, where the Insert Company’s knowledge and experience can shine through: “We get plenty of orders placed over the phone. It gives you a sense of the market that you won’t get online.

12

torque-expo.com

“People buy from people, they don’t buy from a company.” Straightforward honesty with customers is essential in building up trust and strong business relationships, emphasises the straight-talking Broome: “I’d rather tell people bad news instead of being chased.” The human touch is also essential when it comes to spotting trends and reacting when certain products are selling like proverbial hotcakes, he says: “We want to be on top of things like that. We’d rather make the judgements ourselves and if the business needs new stocks quickly then we’ll react accordingly.” While you may assume fasteners have little relation to fashion, The Insert Company has to keep a close eye on trends, particularly in the furniture business: “We’re doing more business with black and antique bronze colours/inserts.” Well stocked for challenges The Insert Company formed in 2003 and Broome has worked there for over a decade. With a headcount of four at the Wednesbury HQ (and an off-site accounts department in Evesham), the firm is lean but with an increasingly well stocked warehouse. Turnover is now north of £1million a year. “We supply to a lot of Europe and we ship all around the world… to the USA, Vietnam, you name it. We are doing a lot with Poland and Turkey at the moment.” The firm also offers custom made parts for applications upon request, including turned metal parts, metal presswork and plating. Imperial thread sizes are also available from the firm.

The Insert Company is actively looking to bring in new ranges and one of the most recent additions has been Spax: “We’re one of the few supplying Spax in the distribution channel. They’ve got some nice POS and it ties in with the steel inserts we supply. It is a high-end German brand which is great for us, we’d rather sell more quality – many of our big suppliers are based in Europe.” The DIY sector is stronger than the headlines suggest, Broome believes: “Most of the sectors we supply are buoyant,” he continues. “We’re up 10% over the year.” But things are tighter, he concedes, with rising raw material costs making their contribution to a tightening margin – “zinc alloy is up 5-10% min”. “We absorb some of the rising costs, but we don’t sell on price – we are about quality and service.” With over approximately 3,000 ft² of warehousing space, The Insert Company has built up considerable stocks gradually. “We’ve had a good couple of years and we now have enough product so that we can live on our stocks for 12 months if we had to, as a contingency. We’ve grown it slowly. We’re sensible – we’d rather have money in the business than be maxed out.” That stock contingency may come in handy, depending on Brexit which – at the time of Torque’s visit to The Insert Company – is still an unknown quantity with regards to what the terms of business will be with Europe, after 29 March 2019. “We all thought we’d have a deal by now,” rues Broome. “The vote [in 2016] hit prices straightaway in terms of currency.” Depending on the form Brexit takes, the potential upfront VAT burden on

High-end German brand Spax is a new addition to The Insert Company's range distributors could prove disruptive in the market, he adds: “We are cash rich and we can pay that VAT up front if we need to, but it might hit competitors hard. We expect Q1 to be strong, but Q2 may be poor, we’ll have to wait and see.” Aims In terms of operations, The Insert Company’s commitment to holding significant stocks – and grow with new ranges – will see it look to move to bigger premises in the next 12 months.

“We’re always looking for new suppliers that we can be wholesale for, like Spax, and there’s always new product to promote. “We’ve got a warehouse just over the road and we’re starting to run out of space. So, we’re looking to buy a bigger unit. We need to expand to fit in more products. We’ve built up our core stocks, but we’ve not physically got the room to add much more. We had looked at the move earlier, but we put it off to Q3.” “Spax has been underserved in the

distribution world, so we see an opportunity there. We’re looking to bring in new distributor customers and we’re always trying to bring in new product. “We are independent, we are free agents and we’ve got knowledgeable staff on the end of the phone. oolbank is one of Europe’s leading specialist distributors operating within the hand and power tool industry. Established in 1972 as the Toolbank of today, the business’ roots actually go back considerably further to the 19th century, when it was first inaugurated in 1829. In the present day, Toolbank supplies over 30,000 products to some 14,000 outlets throughout the UK and Europe. With 14 offices located around the UK, the group totals nearly a thousand employees of which half have been with the company for more than 10 years. With a fleet of over 100 delivery vans Toolbank prides itself on service, with customers generally able to receive orders by 2pm the next day. The company runs 10 regional trade shows which operate up and down the UK throughout the year, split between summer and autumn. The distributor currently brings 252 brands to market to meet the needs of 20 different categories of customer. At the business’ first ever ‘open day’ launch, we travelled to Toolbank’s Wednesbury distribution centre, boasting an impressive 200,000 square foot of warehouse space, to find out all about the new inclusions…

Starting out in the construction building industry back in 1989, Faithfull currently has around 3,500 products aimed at professionals and DIY enthusiasts in its portfolio. New to Faithfull’s product line-up this year is its Prestige Trowel range for brick-working and plastering, which has been six years in the making. In total, there are 25 trowels in the range, 16 for brick-working and nine for plastering. Each item in the Prestige range is single-forged from one piece of metal for added strength. The brickwork trowels are equipped with hard-wearing end caps for tapping down on bricks, with a polished smooth-lacquer face so mortar slides off easily. The trowels have hardened edges on both sides and a high handle lift for comfort and protection of the user’s knuckles.

The Clip Tech Hubs can easily attach to any belt, ClipTech bag or tote, ClipTech Wall Organizer, or screwed to a wall or joist. ToughBuilt is looking to make a big impact in the UK, with 22 shows planned throughout 2019 and a new catalogue launch for dealers to find out all they need to know about the brand. Nikolai Suvorov, VP of Sales – Europe, said: “Passion for the customers, passion for innovation and passion to be the best and make the work of construction workers easier is what we share with Toolbank.” www.toughbuilt.com

Since then, it has expanded its range to incorporate over 400 hand tools across 17 of the top 20 hand tool categories. Through its partnership with Toolbank, which was announced at the start of this year, Milwaukee’s long-term plan is to have an extended full range of high-end hand tool products aimed at professionals. One of Milwaukee’s flagship products is the Packout modular storage system which allows professionals to transport their tools between jobs easily and all in one place. The Packout range is based around the Rolling Trolley Toolbox which is equipped with oversized wheels for increased manoeuvrability, with other items in the Packout range able to be stacked on top. Both hard and soft items in the Packout range can be stacked up and clicked securely together however the user desires, and with reinforced bars on each corner, tools are secure and protected. Simon Marshall, Head of Milwaukee’s Hand Tool Strategy, said: “Hand tools are now an important area of focus for Milwaukee, we are the fastest growing hand tool manufacturer in the industry. There has been a big investment on the hand tool side of the business, and we want it to be able to stand in its own right alongside the power tool side.” www.milwaukeepowertools.co.uk

INNOVATION

GO GIDGIT GO Gidgit is a simple, efficient solution designed for the thousands of kitchen fitters and DIYers around the world. Jim Thomson tells Torque Magazine how he came up with the design and what’s next for this brand new innovation ike many classic innovation stories, Gidgit was created to serve a need – and to fill a gap in the market. Jim Thomson was renovating his own kitchen, which had been custom designed. When it came to replacing the cabinet doors, the screw holes for the hinges were damaged. Thomson was faced with the prospect of spending huge sums of money to replace the custom doors. Instead, he designed a solution that meant he could re-hang the existing kitchen cabinet doors, without shelling out thousands, despite those damaged screw holes. “It is a really simple idea. I designed it and we had 3D printed parts made first. Then I asked a company how much it would be to manufacture it. I came at the problem from an engineering point of view, so it has been designed to be quick and efficient to implement.” From there, Thomson decided to see if anyone else had been faced with a similar dilemma and began selling the product online to gauge if there was a wider market for it. Designed in spring 2016, the first Gidgit products came on sale in September of the same year. Now available through growing online portals like Amazon and ManoMano, Gidgit is moving from a one-off, time and money saving design to a fledgling business, despite early knock backs from traditional, big name, DIY retailers. Gidgit is UK-made, UK registered and uses local suppliers to its Oxfordshire base. Founder Thomson is conscious of the firm’s eco-footprint. “We had very simple packaging for online sales, but I didn’t really like it – it wasn’t recyclable… Gidgit is a plastic part and we’re supposed to be having a war on plastic. So, we’ve revamped the packaging and that’s now 100% recyclable as well as being ready for bulk sales into the retail market.”

L

Hinging on success “The largest market for us is, currently, Germany,” Thomson tells Torque. “It used to be the UK, then the USA and Canada and then France. We are a very small company, we’re organically grown

and there’s been no other financial investment apart from my own. Sales are a matter of awareness, we really don’t spend much on marketing and all our sales are online today. “It’s been a slow burn overseas, but we’ve now signed a US distributor, who started as a customer. He couldn’t find a solution to the same problem until he found us.” Thomson continues: “We’re currently raising awareness on LinkedIn and we’ve had some good press coverage too. “People find us by searching online for the solution and plenty of our customers discover us this way. The design works for most common cabinets and we’ve now designed another bracket to go on the door side (see above) and a design that will be compatible with IKEA cabinets. There’ll be further products coming soon, too. “We sold seven kits to one person, which was very satisfying and as it seems there are lots of refurbs on kitchens, bathrooms, offices etc going on we are pleased to help with a cheap, effective fix for rehanging existing, cabinet doors, which saves people suffering great expense and frustration. “People invest so much in cabinetry but you don’t have to replace the whole lot just because of a few, damaged screw holes.” www.gidgit.eu

“A UNIQUE SOLUTION” Jim Thomson tells Torque: “As of Q1 2019, Gidgit will become the only company to solve the problem of damaged screw holes in kitchen, bedroom and bathroom cabinets for both the cabinet side and the door side. “Gidgit is the only company that has brackets which accommodate mismatched holes and the only product that includes Euro Cabinet Screws for a proper mechanical fit. It is also the only option which provides a choice of colour to match up with most cabinet interiors.”

SHOW PREVIEW FASTENER FAIR STUTTGART 2019

THE BIG STUTTGART PREVIEW This March, Messe Stuttgart will play host to the eighth Fastener Fair Stuttgart. If you’re planning a trip, here’s a guide to some of the must-see stands and products at this year’s show…

Hexstone Hall 3, Stand 1936 No matter what form Brexit takes (and at time of press we still don’t know) the UK fastener industry will be represented at Fastener Fair Stuttgart, not least by Hexstone, the sector’s largest player in Britain. It’s trading divisions Owlett-Jaton, STF and Icon, each with their own product focus, will be there to meet customers and explain the ranges and services available.

With a comprehensive (and growing) range of products on offer, Hexstone is firmly open for business post-UK’s withdrawal from the EU, across the UK, Ireland, Europe and the rest of the globe. That exhaustive range of products includes fasteners, fixings in carbon, stainless and high-grade steels, with new products being continually added to the mix. Notable recent launches include the Vortex TX, an offshoot off the pozi drive Vortex screw. Like the original screw, the Vortex TX is a high-

quality multipurpose screw recognised for its premium quality and tailored product features. The new TX recess variation helps reduce cam-out, offers more grip and an even better drive (see our wood screws feature elsewhere in this issue). The extensive JCP range of construction fixings will be on display. JCP offers a wide range of products to suit a variety of applications including metal and chemical anchors. Quality is key, with products supported by full technical details, European Type Approvals (ETA’s) and CE marking. JCP also provides an Anchor Calculation Program which allows users to determine which anchors they need across a wide range of applications. Unifix will also be a focus, with over 1,250 products to choose from in formats specially designed to suit trade counters with a full merchandising programme to support the brand. Formats include the trade bag, the eye-catching branded packaging is robust, re-sealable, drop-proof, water resistant, easy to identify and an ideal size to carry. The retail bag is similar, only in small pack quantities suited to retail. Finally, the comprehensive Unifix branded ironmongery range includes door, gate and lock furniture and accessories. Other brands from the Hexstone stable being showcased in Stuttgart include Thunderbolt, the self-tapping anchor with the power to be used on a whole range of construction materials, including concrete, stone, brick and block. The versatile anchor is also available in galvanised format, giving it the added power to last longer in environments with a corrosive atmosphere, such as coastal, marine and industrial locations. Hexstone will showcase services including its comprehensive ‘specials’ service that includes special product from drawings and a wide range of finishes and patching for customers. Hexstone’s impressive stock line-up with over 30,000 products, including those brands and many proprietary brands, are backed by large stocks and efficient operations. Hexstone’s experienced and knowledgeable staff will be on hand at the show where the firm will also be on the look-out for European partners for its brands. www.hexstone.co.uk

Hall 1, booth 152

Lederer is asking: “What connects us? It doesn’t have to be something new - be it intricate, large or complicated - for us to get enthusiastic about it. Passion often arises in small spaces and in secrecy; inspired by a simple idea that seems insignificant at first glance. Just these small and familiar things can be the reason for us to be moved and experience great moments. “It's irrelevant whether it's about fastening technology, screws and nuts or emotions, trust and passion: People attach importance to connections. After five decades, in which Lederer has been combining all this, it's time for you and us to say... what your and our hearts beat for… “Visit us at the 8th Fastener Fair Stuttgart, the world's leading trade fair for the fastening and fastening industry. “From March 19 to 21 2019, it will again be the central point of contact for all industry professionals in Halls 1, 3 and 5 of the Stuttgart Exhibition Centre.” www.lederer-online.com

There has been significant growth at Teudeloff over the last 25 years. The firm started in 1994, in Stuttgart, with two people. Now there are 15 highly motivated employees at Teudeloff and 35 tool specialists in Birmingham in production at TiL (Tooling International Limited). Teudeloff is very happy with the rate of growth so far, with many new customers spread out over all continents in more than 30 countries, mostly in Europe, the USA and the Far East. Teudeloff ranks among the best suppliers of recess pins and punches for the fastener industry. Together with production at TiL, the company focuses on quality in geometry tool life and delivery performance. With a very customer-orientated service, Teudeloff works out the fitting tool concept for each customer individually adapted to requirements concerning tooling, service storage and logistics. Key competences lie in recess tooling like punches and pins for fasteners in cold forming: All geometries, Torx, Torx plus, Six lobe, Pozi, Phillips, Hexagonal, 12-Multipoint, Bihexagonal, special as standard or to drawing. Teudeloff will present the complete range of tooling for screw manufacturing / cold forming at Stuttgart. www.teudeloff.de

Ambrovit

Hall 3, Stand 2056

Hall 1, Stand 812

With WASI’s clever IT and logistics services, the firm has transformed in recent years from a pure distributor of stainless steel connections to a solutions provider. In addition to procurement security, WASI also offers procurement simplification. These include ordering systems such as WASI Sc@n, EDI, the WASI ordering system, the WASI Webshop and the WASI App. Furthermore, WASI’s product range is constantly being expanded and optimised to meet all market requirements and customer wishes. Therefore products made of Duplex (1.4462) have been added to the standard range. Duplex belongs to the group of rust- and acid-resistant steels and therefore has a high strength comparable to high-strength structural steels at the same time it is price-stable. You can learn more about the material and its significant potential at the show. www.wasi.de

Ambrovit, consistent with its commercial development programme, is always on the market with brand new products, available for its customers. Ambrovit has recently significantly expanded its carpentry screws range. The commercial success of carpentry screws brought creativity in Ambrovit’s show stand project over 2018-2019. The stand design is apparently simple, but it actually has a considerable impact in communicating the sector the company wants to operate in, using for example, laminated timber, mostly employed in wooden constructions and truss. Ambrovit wanted to make an impact, with its usual elegance, in one of the fields where it is among the leaders of the sector, thanks to continued research. The aims of the management was well interpreted by the designer in the shape, materials and spaces addressed to the typical hospitality of Ambrovit. This message was also taken in by the public, having been very successful among visitors at shows so far, and even won an award, for Best Stand 2018 at last year’s Construction Week exhibition in Birmingham. www.ambrovit.it

pgb-Europe Hall 1, Stand 836. pgb-Europe tells us it lives and breathes fasteners and fixings and will prominently present at Fastener Fair Stuttgart, from stand 836 (hall 1). The family-owned Belgian company is a leading manufacturer and supplier in structural steel fasteners, wood screws and anchors. The core business is the distribution of fastener materials. The product range consists of more than 50,000 products: from bolts and nuts to professional wood screws, cutting edge anchors to tools and drill accessories. Besides this, pgb daily works on customised solutions and special engineered products on customer’s request. pgb’s own factory plants in Poland (anchors) and Vietnam (wood screws) produce products of the highest quality according to European Regulations. So, what’s new? pgb has an enlarged product range of SB bolts (EN 15048), HV (EN 14399-4) and HR assemblies (EN 14399-3). Audited and certified by TÜV Germany, it offers the highest quality bolt assemblies directly from stock. Hapax wood screws are a range of innovative professional universal wood screws and timber construction screws (patented design). Thanks to its special drill point and optimised geometry, the screw is inserted in the wood with less effort. This results in split-free mounting, even close to the edge. Moreover, it reduces stress on the wrist and improves the user ergonomics during installation. The special BlueTop coating enlarges the corrosion resistance by 10-fold, compared

with conventional zinc plating. For insulation fixings: SMART offers economical, energy-efficient and safe fixings for ETICS for all building materials. The innovative S-IPT 8 is a screwed-in fixing, which is strongly recommended for thick insulations. pgb-Europe’s new robot-controlled pallet warehouse has given pgb-Europe 28,000 new pallet places available of which 13,000 in the automated pallet warehouse and 60,000 storage bins of which 40,000 in the mini load and 20,000 on shelving. Finally, a new e-shop makes simple work of finding pgb products and documentation on both PC, tablet and/or smartphone. www.pgb-europe.com

Rivit Hall 3, Stand 1702 Rivit Srl is a leading Italian company for the production and distribution of fastening systems and tools, for sheet metal working and assembly. Established in 1973, Rivit developed a wide range of products for fasteners for the industry world (including blind rivets, rivet nuts, self-clinching, welding studs, blind bolts, latches, cage nuts, clamps, steel screws, stainless steel screws and plastic screws) and related tools for their installation (tools for blind rivets and for rivet nuts, presses, welding machines and tools for blind bolts). Rivit is well-rooted in the domestic and international markets, where it operates in over 55 countries. Evolution and technological innovation play a key role at Rivit, but the direct relationship with customers is crucial, with the company fully focusing on satisfying customer needs. The comprehensive range of fasteners from Rivit includes: Blind rivets, which allow for blind fastening, working from one side only. Produced in several lengths and diameters, standard or structural type; they are available with dome, large, countersunk head and they can be made in aluminum, steel, stainless steel, cooper, for every kind of application. Rivet nuts can selfproduce threading on pre-drilled sheet metals that cannot be

reached from the back. Their use does not damage or deform materials subject to surface treatment. They are available in stainless steel, steel, aluminum; they can have dome head, countersunk head or reduced head from M3 to M16 with cylindrical or hexagonal, open or blind shank. Self-clinching are quick and safe fastening systems, respond to assembly problems on laminates, boxed and thin sheets. Each range of fastener includes relevant tools for their application, such as tools for rivets and presses. www.rivit.it.

SWG Production Hall 1, Stand 746 SWG Schraubenwerk Gaisbach GmbH – Business Unit Production – has focused on terrace screws for various applications. While continually launching further innovations into the fastener market, SWG improved the current (and already very successful) terrace screw. For applications with very hard wooden boards, the terrace screw – with its reinforced shank and an enhanced drill tip – has been the number one choice for numerous customers for years. The drill tip ensures a precise positioning of the screw, no splitting and short edge distances. Due to the grooved shank, the terrace screw has additional strength for the hardwood sector. The grooved shank collects existing wood fibres and preventing movements of the boards and any disturbing “cracking sounds”. And there’s an aesthetically pleasing finish thanks to a small countersunk head with milling pockets. One further development of the stainless steel terrace screw is the new “Vintage look”. In a special heating process the screw gets a dark brown colour. The unique process changes the surface of the screw and the result is a durable colour which cannot be damaged by the application and

30

transport. The “Vintage look” terrace screw matches perfect with dark wooden boards, for example terraces made of tropical wood. Besides the terrace decking, there are also other types of stainless steel screws with the vintage look available, which can be used for fixing facades and many other applications. www.swg-produktion.de

VIPA Hall 1, Stand 1404 VIPA is currently constructing its third highbay automated warehouse, increasing its storage capacity to 150,000 spaces in total; it can supply over 65,000 different products including different sizes, coatings and materials. VIPA moved to its current head office in Italy in 2001 and began with one high-bay warehouse, which is 135m long and 35m high but included only five aisles. By 2007, the company added a second high-bay warehouse adding an extra seven automated aisles, all 12 aisles across both warehouses working in synchronisation to deliver the final orders. In 2018, VIPA has added a third warehouse with the same dimensions which increases its storage capacity by 25%. It is synchronised with the other two warehouses, but it differs in the fact it is fully automated. The introduction of the new warehouse means that Vipa has a totally automated 24hrs system; the machines will be operational around the clock. The new high-bay automated warehouse is due to be

completed and fully operational by June 2019. In addition to its head office in Italy, Vipa has five branches in Spain, France, Germany, China and the task office in Czech Republic. The company is also quality certified and is a producer for structural bolts according to EN 15048:2007 standards. The SB screw is supplied with CE Marking. Another important range in construction is the HV kits according to EN 14399. www.vipafasteners.com

CONDAT Hall 3, Stand 2450 At Stuttgart, CONDAT will exhibit a range of lubricants dedicated to cold heading processes. Dedicated solutions include soaps for skin-pass or wire drawing operations before cold heading, multi-purpose forming oils, heavy duty forming lubricants, extreme pressure neat cutting oils for thread rolling and tapping and also quenching oils and polymers. CONDAT offers technical solutions that reduce their impact on the workplace and environment. The evolution of cold stamping machines and the growing expertise of subcontractors make it possible today to produce more and more complex and large pieces. Section reductions greater than 70% become common, generating enormous pressure on tools (punches and dies). EXTRUGLISS GREEN's vegetablebased cold-heading oils meet these technical requirements while increasing the OEE (efficiency of your machine) and reducing tooling budgets. Highly efficient and more respectful of the operator's working environment, EXTRUGLISS GREEN is a 2-in-1 oil that provides superior lubrication to the machine mechanisms and the tools side. www.condat-lubricants.com

TORQUE FOCUS RIVETS, RIVET TOOLS & RIVET TECH

THE RIVET ROUND-UP Blind rivets, rivet nut tools and process control software headline our rivet selection...

SCELL-IT: A NEW RANGE OF PRO BATTERY RIVET AND RIVET NUT TOOLS Because blind rivets and rivet nuts require the use of appropriate installation tools, SCELL-IT, a leader of blind rivets on the French retail market, has launched its own range of battery tools named ELEMENT. Its first « element », the Element-5 riveter, launched in 2017. The new ELEMENT range meets the needs of the metallurgical industry, who seek to gain freedom of movement. With no hose or compressor, the ELEMENT battery tools directly answer that need. Compact and with an ideal weightto-power ratio, they ensure optimal operability, regardless of the angle of application, to overcome the most inaccessible operations without fatiguing operators. Handily, a unique “footprint” has been added to its back, allowing the tool to be put on scaffolding or work plan upside down. Easy to use and maintain compared to a pneumatic machine, they are ideal for professionals looking for simplicity. With the unique and interchangeable 18V/ 2.0Ah lithium-ion battery, there’s no longer incompatible batteries or chargers that do not fit from one tool to another. The long battery life allows for extended operating hours without changing and fastcharging means operators will always have a battery ready to use. The complete ELEMENT range is supplied with two batteries as standard (except the E-5 and E-8, for which the quantity is left to the buyer). SCELL-IT believes the ergonomics of a product is as important as its efficiency. It designs innovations exclusively in France, working with experienced and skilled local partners and has exclusive patented designs for its ergonomic tools. A low and well distributed weight combined with handling comfort and ease of use ensure hours of work without fatigue. Smartly designed, the new ELEMENT tools include numerous features: charging lights indicators, three integrated LEDs that ensure the visibility of the darkest working areas for more precision and a clip that allows the user to attach the tool to their belt or hang it at a fixed station to find it quickly. Finally, a transparent integrated rod collector helps operators see when it has to be emptied. It all comes in a durable and practical rigid box, with a dedicated slot for a SCELL-IT consumables box. The ELEMENT range is guaranteed for one year and the SCELL-IT After-Sales Service takes care of its customers with professional commitments: sending a receipt of the tool, support under warranty or quoting within 24 hours, and returning the repaired tool within 48 hours after acceptance of the quote. Reactivity and reliability of interventions ensure the

return of a tool in perfect working order, very quickly, the firm says. DEJOND: ZERO RISK LEAK-FREE ASSEMBLY

Designed with a closed end and a large flanged head with a cylindrical groove and O-ring seal mounted underneath, Dejond’s cold-formed HX Tubtara® blind rivet nuts, in steel and stainless steel, offer a worry-free, watertight fastening solution in many critical applications. During rivet nut installation the O-ring seal slides into the groove and is compressed between the flanged head and the plate or profile the rivet nut is installed in. After setting, the special head design ensures metal-to-metal contact on either side of the O-ring, that firmly remains in the conically shaped recess, resulting in an optimal seal compression. This guarantees a well-functioning seal, ideally positioned away from possible burrs or sharp hole edges and protected against UV light. The under-head seal provides excellent protection against ingress of fluids, moisture, oil or dirt, even under high pressures up to at least 10 bar. The HX design is IP 68 guaranteed under Dejond test conditions.

As application requirements become increasingly complicated, other watertight rivet nut solutions had to be conceived. This led Dejond to develop the (H)DPX series, involving a non-reactive peripheral seal applied to the underhead bearing surface of a flat head Tubtara (pictured). The material is gap filling, forming a robust seal between mating surfaces and has a sealing capacity exceeding 150 bar. A correctly installed Tubtara (H)DPX ensures an IP 67 waterproof assembly. This seal can be applied under the flat head of stocked standard parts, in all materials and shank shapes, offering OEM customers very short delivery times. Dejond manufactures cold formed Tubtara blind rivet nuts in its EN 9100 certified factory: “We address increasingly demanding fastening applications and strive to offer engineered fastening solutions. We make the difference by sharing experience and development expertise in trustworthy partnerships.” www.tubtara.com

ATLAS COPCO

The Atlas Copco Academy Atlas Copco’s UK headquarters houses its Training Academy and if you pay a visit, you’re likely to learn a lot not just about the firm’s tools, services and philosophy, but also about the future of connected assembly across a wide range of industries, thanks to the expert in-house knowledge of its staff, as Torque Magazine found out…

tlas Copco’s UK headquarters at Hemel Hempstead is based just over 1,000 miles from Atlas Copco’s international base in Stockholm (as the crow flies). Once you’re through the door, you’ll find this part of Hertfordshire incorporates a slice of Scandinavian style and corporate philosophy, with a plaza styled entrance hall, open office spaces, zoned working areas, hot desks and thinking space rooms, based on a principle of activity-based working. Deeper into the HQ and you come across Atlas Copco’s Training Academy, an area for learning, meeting and for today, hosting Torque Magazine. It’s here that Atlas Copco runs non-branded education sessions that are open to all. “We’re trying to champion education,” explains Atlas Copco Tools’ UK General Manager David Embley. “We run training sessions on demand and we had 120 people attend our most recent programme, on Tightening Technique which ran over two days.” Education is important, explains Embley: “It’s a very complex business. It is a demanding market and across the board we’re seeing a drive towards smart factories. There are disrupters in the market too.” So what’s pushing this drive for smart factories? Increasing demand for greater traceability? Not necessarily, says Paul Clark, Business Line Manager of the General Industry tool division: “Traceability has been a focus for 20 years now, that’s already happened, in a sense. Now there’s a drive for quality and to safeguard the process. For some, traceability is just ‘box-ticking’. Companies have collected data during production, but they also need to do something with it – that’s the interesting part of the equation. We have the platform to do that. “The demand for error proofing is high. When it comes to brand reputation, all the big manufacturers want to get it right first time. They are wary of any negative publicity and, in terms of quality, there’s a push back to subsuppliers, an expectation that it is not just their responsibility to make deliveries on time, but also a responsibility to ensure the quality of the product is right.”

SMART CONNECTED ASSEMBLY Atlas Copco can work with customers right from the beginnings of a project, offering an on-site, fully integrated programme. David Embley adds: “When we start working with customers we assess what stage they are at and what they require. Then we can tailor systems and tools for them.” There are ‘5 steps’ of Atlas Copco’s Smart Connected Assembly, designed to help determine what each assembly environment

SPOTLIGHT_AtlasCopco_TOR_Feb19.qxp 11/02/2019 18:20 Page 2

Atlas Copco’s Low Reaction Tools are a significant innovation, enabling more flexibility for production lines needs, explains Paul Booth, Product Manager – General Industry. Step 1 covers AC torque tools with advanced clutch mechanisms, controlling and monitoring torque level and shutting off to avoid over-torqueing. Step 2 moves into batch counting, helping eliminate human error even further by assisting operators with the correct assembly sequence. Angle joint control is covered in Step 3, ensuring that all joints are consistent for soft and hard joints, avoiding cross threading, excess washers and missing parts. Moving up, Step 4 covers safety critical connections, using traceability and closed loop data to ensure integrity and quality of fastening. Finally, Step 5 is line control quality assurance, with the provision of full data collection and – crucially for many manufacturers – integration into existing PLCs (programmable logic controller) via open protocol software. Embley says: “We’re seeing manufacturers are going straight to the highest level, which historically has not happened. New players are coming in and are asking for the higher quality solutions and tools. We understand there has to be a value to it. We look at the problem and we provide a ROI.” PRODUCTS, INNOVATION & THE FUTURE Production lines, including leading UK car plants, are looking to reduce their footprint and are keenly focused on removing cables from the production line, without losing traceability or speed. So, it comes as no surprise that cordless tools are big on the agenda at Atlas Copco. Key developments include the Low Reaction (LRT) handheld tools. With multiple benefits, LRTs potentially make more efficient use of space (and tools too, which can be programmed for use at multiple points along the line). It even allows for cobots to handle much larger torque values – the LRT range is expected to be able to deliver 150NM through a hand tool by the end of this year. Also new is Atlas Copco’s Power Focus 6000 digital controller, which allows connectivity of up to six tools (one cable based and five wireless or six wireless, over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth). Partitional software allows new updates to be uploaded via flash drive whilst the controller is still in use, so there is no downtime required. While Atlas Copco’s one of the clear leaders in the automotive market, there’s an incredibly broad selection of industries that the firm serves across its many divisions, with everything from white goods manufacturing (“this is a large area and growing for us”) to udder cleaners (you heard it here first). It’s seen a big increase in business in the UK: “Customers are

coming to us, it’s not always a case of us looking for the smart factories we can assist.” And the pace of change in the world of smart connected assembly is great. Health & Safety legislation has struggled to keep up with collaborative robots on the production line, for example, where the technology has changed and improved, but the laws have not (yet). Atlas Copco has bolstered its connections with the cutting edge of manufacturing by recently becoming a member of Coventry’s Manufacturing Technology Centre: “That’s a crucial move for us,” Embley tells Torque Magazine. “There are lots of synergies between us, the MTC and its partner companies.” Summing up, Embley says: “Part of our role is helping companies understand the challenges of fastening in this business. It’s not just about providing products, we are deeply involved in projects and service to create value in all the steps. “There’s a massive education process and there’s been plenty of change for us too. We’re investing in 3D manufacturing, robots and we’re looking at AR – we’re getting asked for it more and more. “We help improve processes, reduce warranty issues, provide ROI and we give customers bespoke solutions. It’s all about helping our manufacturers succeed in meeting their quality and efficiency targets. We want to be a leader in assembly and remain so.” www.atlascopco.com

HiKOKI IMPACT DRIVER & COMBI DRILL In his first Torque-Tested feature Peter Brett talks us through his hands-on experience of two new products currently on the professional tradesman’s radar...

HIKOKI 36V IMPACT DRIVER – COMPACT IMPACT ON JUST about any jobsite the rattle of impact drivers tells the story of their almost universal adoption by the trades. And there is no doubt that they are useful – and that’s why users tolerate the noise. However, the impact driver of yesteryear is a different beast from the ones hitting the market right now.

Shoehorned into a compact and high quality body, the HiKOKI WH36DB features a triple hammer system, an IP56 water and dust proofing rating and several adjustable modes. Thanks to HiKOKI’s R and D team, its new impact drivers even have 21st Century sensitivity built in!

HANDLING AND COMFORT First impressions count a lot in a tool that is handled a lot. The main grip is slim and well-shaped with ample rubber moulding in strategic places for grip and comfort. The weight of the tool is largely focused on the base where the multi-volt battery pack is located. This has a flat bottom for easy placement, and the twin-button battery lock works slickly to avoid the annoying ‘sticky-battery release’ syndrome. A first for HiKOKI is the provision of a four-light charge status system on the front of the battery pack – a bit of a catch-up but welcome nevertheless. On the left side of the base is another very useful feature – a mode selection switch that enables the user to select Power, Self-Drilling Screw mode or Normal or Soft modes. Clearly, a 25mm screw needn’t be driven with the same force as a 100mm one. To save battery power and screwheads it’s great to have the option. It saves on the ‘clackety’ noise of the impact hammers too, for which I am thankful. A small switch on the front of the base is used to select the light modes. With older eyesight, I am a fan of worklights on tools, and the options on this light are very useful.

44

torque-expo.com

COMPACT TOO The WH36DB stands only 245mm high on its battery pack and from the front of the ¼ inch hex chuck to the back of the casing is a mere 130mm – small enough to fit into the smallest of kitchen cabinets. It really is hard to believe that a driver so compact can deliver up to 210Nm of tightening torque. Speeds are controlled via the trigger with options of 0 – 2900/min in Power Mode down to 0 - 900/min in Soft mode. One of the reasons why HiKOKI has managed to make this driver so compact is because the motor is brushless – this equals fewer working parts, longer life and more power. And they are now a necessity on most cordless power tools as a result.

USING IT

The mode selection switch allows users to pick Power & Self-Drilling Screw modes

I have had this driver onsite for about six weeks and it has never fallen short of expectations – it is powerful, easy to handle, easy to adjust and very practical. I have driven everything from 120mm long concrete screws to 20mm long self-tappers and woodscrews while fitting a kitchen. I really came to value the adjustable modes as it is sometimes too easy to overdrive screws with a conventional one-speed impact driver. HiKOKI has definitely done its homework on this one and it would be a right grump who might quibble with it.

GET YOUR PRODUCT REVIEWED BY PETER BRETT Brands, companies and wholesalers that are interested in getting their products reviewed in Torque Magazine should contact the editor at Jonathon@torque-expo.com.

HIKOKI DV 36DAX COMBI DRILL - MULTI-VOLT FLEXIBILITY FROM THE minute you pick this combi drill up you know it means business. It is weighty, in a good way, with excellent ergonomics and a quick blip on the trigger creates a small torque twist in your hands that tells you it is powerful. 138Nm of torque powerful, in fact, and hence the need for the long auxiliary handle that comes with it. Drilling capacities are impressive – up to 102mm diameter holes in softwood and up to 20mm holes in brick. I can vouch for these as I have tried them. A series of 50mm diameter

‘take no prisoners’ holes in 45mm thick oak worktops barely slowed the drill down and gave confidence that professionals will not find this tool lacking on the power front. I still use a drill rather than impact drivers to drive screws wherever possible. (I don’t like the clackety impact noise unless absolutely necessary). Driving 12 gauge 100mm screws is no problem, and my guess is that longer hex head screws would also be no problem because the drive from a hex adaptor would be more positive.

36 VOLTS OF POWER ON TAP The explanation for most of this power comes from the use of brushless motors and HiKOKI’s MultiVolt battery packs. These packs are made for HiKOKI’s new 36v tool range, but are also designed to retro fit the ‘older’ 18v Hitachi/HiKOKI tools, where a clever bit of switching turns them into 18v/5Ah batteries. HiKOKI has made a good job of ensuring that the compatibility is seamless and foolproof – 18v battery packs just won’t fit the 36v tools.

Drilling capacities are impressive, up to 102mm holes in softwood & up to 20mm holes in brick

HANDY TO HAVE

THE FAMILIAR DESIGN HELPS HANDLING The design of this combi follows well-established patterns with the battery pack on the base of the handle to balance gearbox and motor on the top. The switchgear will be familiar for most users with high/low speed setting on top of the casing, a 24-position collar behind the chuck to choose drill/hammer or 22 torque positions and a reverse/forward push through switch above the speed sensitive trigger. The addition of a spindle brake is another good feature. An all-metal keyless chuck gives a firm grip on drill bits from 1.5mm to 13mm diameters. I found that even on high impact rates (0-31,500/min) the chuck held onto the drill bit. However, after using the drill in impact mode for a while, you will always look on the invention of SDS drills in a kindly way. Because the drill follows a fairly standard design, the ergonomics feel familiar right from the off. The generous and well-designed black rubberised overmoulding provides good grip and bump protection.

With working at height regulations insisting that tethering tools is a must, the addition of a wrist strap and a reversible belt hook are both places where a tether could be clipped on. And they can be used for their intended purposes too. A bright LED light on the base is aimed at the end of the chuck and a battery charge indicator on the battery pack will tell you how much charge you have left at the push of a button. There is an awful lot to like about this thoroughly professional quality combi drill. It feels and looks like it will have a long working life and has exceeded my expectations in the few months I have been using it.

A PERRY LIMITED

A PERRY EXPANDS MANUFACTURING West Midlands firm A Perry acquired D.F. Smith & Co last year. The move represents a shift towards own manufactured products over overseas imports…

ontinuing its positive approach to future growth and expansion, A Perry Limited has recently purchased the machinery, stock and assets of D.F. Smith & Co, the Black Country-based manufacturer of U Bolts, Eyebolts and other engineered fasteners. The acquisition is a natural addition and expansion to the state-of-the-art production facility based at A Perry’s Doulton Road site. “D.F Smith was based only five miles from us in the West Midlands. Due to the fast-moving nature and culture of the family owned business, it was a rapid integration,” revealed Company Director Ian Dunnaker: “We moved and installed all machinery and stock and started to manufacture in just over week,” he tells Torque Magazine. “The staff and the former owner have also joined the Perry team and are helping us integrate it into the business. We’re working on efficiency and output is up 20%. “The last 30 years have seen a great deal of uncertainty in UK manufacturing. The last three decades have seen market forces drive large tranches of UK manufacturing to the Far East. We did face challenges when some companies started to source products overseas, focusing on cost at the detriment of product quality, but we have always prided ourselves on our manufacturing quality and high service levels,” continued Dunnaker. 12 years ago, the failure of a rival gave A Perry the opportunity to purchase the company, meaning it could now manufacture Threaded Bar rather than factor. Soon, the firm was manufacturing product it had previously imported, at a lower

C

cost and at a higher quality. Today, manufacturing makes up over 20% of A Perry’s overall business, with an increasing shift towards own manufactured products over overseas imports. Expanding the product line-up has been part of the longestablished firm’s strategy, seizing relevant opportunities, like the DF Smith acquisition. Founded in 1925 by Arthur Perry (the same family is still at the helm, several generations later), initial ranges comprised of hinges, fixings and gutter brackets. Over the decades, Perry has endured and expanded through the peaks and troughs of the general economy where other companies in the sector have closed. Though the challenges of Brexit continue to create uncertainty across the manufacturing and multiple other market sectors, Dunnaker and the board of Perry’s are positive and remain confident about the future. “Our continued focus on quality and service has seen the Perry Brand grow exponentially in the last decade, with the brand recognised for quality, service and innovation. “As we come to the end of the second decade of the 21st century and enter the third, our manufacturing facility, our equipment, the knowledge and experience of our team, the quality control criteria and our drive to improve efficiency is enabling Threaded Bar and Engineered Fasteners to be manufactured here in the UK to a quality and price which enable us to compete at a national and international level.” www.perrytrade.co.uk

SKILLS ZONE Young apprentices from the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) are returning to the Skills Zone following its debut in 2017. In the Skills Zone, the apprentices will show off their expertise in the areas of brickwork, electrical and plumbing. According to the HAI, the development of these skills is critical to the continued growth of the construction industry in order to cope with demand now and in the future: “As a country we often neglect vocational education as a valid and solid alternative to the more traditional forms of learning but we need to combine as an industry to support apprenticeships and shout about the benefits to encourage more young people to choose this option. “It’s a vital cog in the construction wheel which is currently under-represented.” ITALIAN PAVILION This year, the show is welcoming a contingent of over 20 Italian exhibitors to its exclusive Italian Pavilion. HAI is building strong relations with colleagues in Italy that see Ireland as a growing export market, and who have invested in exhibiting at the show. Some of the Italian brands on display

include: Allfix, P.G Srl, Seba and Metaly, amongst others. The exhibitors cover a broad range of sectors, from fasteners and fixings to adhesives and sealants, and personal protective equipment to accessories and tools. In his President’s Address, Sean Moran looks ahead to what this year’s show has to offer: “New products and innovative ideas are essential to the health of any sector and ours is no different. Indeed, recent years have witnessed hardware and builders’ merchants broadening their offerings by complementing traditional hardware and building materials with improved and additional products. “This year’s show comes at an opportune time and will showcase all that is vibrant and dynamic in our sector. Along with as many colleagues from your business as is feasible, check out what’s new, assess opportunities or take advantage of exclusive offers.” Visitors can join the HAI and become a member of the association during the show by visiting the HAI Member Zone located in the centre of the venue. www.thehardwareshow.ie

CASE STUDY MARTYN PRICE FASTENERS & OGL

MARTYN PRICE HAS STREAMLINED THEIR BUSINESS SINCE GOING DIGITAL Since they started working with OGL 19 years ago, fastener business Martyn Price has made gains through digitising processes. OGL explains more… he decision to digitalise the business began in 2000 when Martyn Price decided to invest in prof.ITplus to help streamline the business and move away from manual processes. Martyn Price told us that: “the front end and sales modules of prof.ITplus really stood out for us. The system would allow us to be more proactive which was something we were aiming for. We had demonstrations from another provider, but in the end OGL was the right match for our business.” It’s important to understand your company’s goals and aims before investing in an ERP system. You need to know that the software can drive your business forward and contribute to its success. For Martyn Price, they knew that they had to become more efficient to continue to grow: "We wanted to streamline our processes and we achieved this through prof.ITplus.” Keeping documents digitally is much more efficient; it takes away the time-consuming and often, error prone manual methods of working that can hold your business back.

T

For example, if you keep hard copies of all your customer documents and rely on staff to keep each record up-to-date, there is an increased chance that information will go missing. Digitising customer documents and storing them in a CRM system improves visibility and accuracy. Customer accounts will remain organised and up-to-date, which will improve efficiency as well as your customer service. Martyn Price proves that a CRM can help businesses sell more effectively, they explain that: "The ability to see all our customer driven information quickly has helped make the business more efficient. You can access pricing information instantly whilst talking to customers over the phone which helps us sell our products.” If your goal is to streamline your business and go digital, research what ERP solutions will work for your company and your industry to drive your business forward. SAFESTART INTERNATIONAL

PARADIGM SHIFTS Sources of unexpected events Larry Wilson, Founder and author of SafeStart International, continues his series on industrial safety, this time tackling where hazards come from... ollowing the first paradigm shift in this series, “Is it hazard or hazardous energy?”, now we will talk about the sources of unexpected events. Last issue, we discussed whether it was hazards or is it hazardous energy? The conclusion (although straightforward) is that it’s really hazardous or potentially hazardous energy… which can move. People can also move, which means that eyes and mind on task are very important, which means that human error is important – primary in fact – whenever people are moving or things around them are moving. So, if we acknowledge that human error is important, the next question is “who”. Whose error caused the incident? Is it always the other person or is it mostly us? In addition, what about when there’s no human error, just mechanical or an electrical failure? Well, one thing we do know is that no one is ever trying to get hurt or cause a lot of accidental damage. Nobody ever plans to do this, which means that something unexpected must have happened. Once something unexpected happens, it is like the first “domino” falling. Then, depending on how

F

many other dominos are lined up, that unexpected event will start a chain reaction. Once the chain reaction starts, and the dominoes start falling – exactly where you end on the (old) risk pyramid is usually determined by the amount of hazardous energy and luck. Ironically, most safety professionals focus on the other dominoes, like whether protective gear or devices were used.

THREE MAIN SOURCES We know that nobody ever plans to have a serious injury, which means, again, that something unexpected must have happened. However, not everybody has figured out that essentially there are only three sources of unexpected events: You do something unexpectedly, the other person does something unexpectedly or the equipment does something unexpectedly. (See figure 1) Which of these three sources do you think is the highest or most important? If we asked these same questions to all the people you work with at your company, what would they say? Well, before getting into the percentages for each category, let’s take a moment to think about what’s actually happened to us in terms of injuries and near misses. So, how many serious injuries have you had, like 85-95% broken bones, third degree Self: one’s own actions burns, serious concussions, etc? contribute to a vast majority of How many minor injuries like all incidents/injuries. sprains and strains, stitches, mild concussions, etc, have you sustained? Then, how many cuts, bruises, bumps and 5-10% scrapes have you had? How do Other people: the behaviour of you compare with most people others causes relatively few (see figure 2). incidents/injuries Obviously, when you bang your shin on the coffee table it’s unlikely that the table did anything unexpectedly. But, what about all the other stuff? 1-5% Well, now that you’ve thought a Events: injuries are rare when bit about your injuries to date, something unexpected happens how many of them were caused without human involvement by the equipment doing some(coupling fails, hoses burst, etc.). thing unexpectedly? Note: if you have 100 people in the room you normally only get one or two hands up for this question.

When you ask about the other guy doing something unexpectedly be sure to exclude contact sports where the other guy is trying to hurt you. Again, with 100 people you usually get 10 -15 hands up but rarely does anyone have more than one example. And finally, what’s left are all the injuries in the selfarea. For most people over 95% of the injuries they have sustained were in the “self-area”. Although most people “freely” admit that it’s more like 97-99%. Over 3 million people have been through this exercise at thousands and thousands of workplaces. And in terms of paradigm shifts, it’s probably one of the most powerful ones. What most workers/people think (or thought before going through this exercise) is that the equipment doing something unexpectedly or the other guy doing something unexpectedly will be much higher than the self-area. Even the people who have already come to the realisation that the self-area is probably the highest are really surprised at just how high it is: most people (over 80%) have never been seriously hurt because the equipment or somebody else did something unexpectedly. In other words, 100% of their serious injuries were in the self-area. This exercise, where you get everyone to build their own personal risk pyramid and then think about each of the three sources, as you can imagine, is a real ‘eyeopener’ for people who would prefer or want to blame the company for all the injuries (all injuries are managements fault because they’re too cheap to fix the equipment or unsafe conditions). So, we have met the enemy, and the enemy is us. But, this is actually very empowering: if it always was the equipment or the other guy doing something unexpectedly then we would be powerless or close to powerless in terms of being able to do something about it. However, if it is us then we can. NEXT ISSUE... we will explore paradigm shifts with risk assessment, as it relates to the three sources of unexpected events.

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION MARKET BACKGROUND PART 1

The wood screws CE Marking mystery Wood timber construction has developed into a major player in the market and the demand for the requisite wood construction screws has become very high. But the marking of these screws has been subject to a unique and opaque situation. AVVIO’s Werner Braun throws light on how this came about. verything began between 1990-2000 when wood screws became bigger and bigger in diameter and length. Finally, in the years around 2000, the wood construction screw successfully conquered the timber construction field. The wood construction screw gradually replaced established simple joining techniques such as the nail or the likes of DIN 571. The use of wood screws, which could be set easily and without predrilling, saved time and money. The triumphal march of the wood screw had begun. With this new connection technology in use, new application options were suddenly possible. Timber construction developed into what it is today: a future-oriented design with sustainability and great potential.

E

A first standardisation – the German approval with the famous “Ü”-Symbol It quickly became clear that these new applications in structural timber construction also required the possibility of static verification for their performance in installation. The national German approval for screws known as “Deutsche Zulassung” in load-bearing timber construction was born. The first German approvals were issued in the ‘90s and the great demand started in 2000. In the middle of 2013 approximately 60 German approvals for screws were in circulation in Europe. Of those, approximately 70% were held by German companies, 16% from Austrian companies, 7% from Taiwanese, 5% from Swiss and 2% from Italian companies. Most of them were held as approval for screws as wood fasteners and for insulation and roofing systems. The German approval regulates the usability and applicability of these screws. The basis was the building regulations of the

federal states in Germany. A “Ü”-Symbol was printed on the packaging as a mark of its conformity. All quality tests within the scope of the German approvals related to the screw - a genuine pure product test combined with controlled production processes. A Europe-wide standard – but the first CE marking cannot be implemented by manufacturers In 2002, the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) began drafting a European standard to regulate these fasteners for load-bearing timber construction throughout Europe. EN 14592 was intended to regulate these construction products. In 2008, this standard came into force as EN 14592:2008 and regulated the CE marking of screws in structural timber construction from August 2010. However, due to considerable deficiencies in this standard, CE marking for all existing products was simply not possible at this time. An example of this was the specification in EN 14592 according to 6.3.2, which prescribes other steel material qualities for production than were usual in practice. The requirements for CE marking laid down in EN 14592 could not be implemented in practice. The world of ETAs is born Well-known manufacturers came together and explained in a joint letter to their customers that for various reasons no CE marking of the screws is feasible, despite it being required by European law. A solution was feverishly sought. One solution was to obtain their own approval in the form of a European Technical Approval (ETA). However, this required a guideline which was published in the form of CUAP 06.03/08 in December 2010.

The main difference between an ETA (approval) issued under the Construction Products Directive (CPD) and an ETA (assessment) issued under the Regulation (CPR) is the following: • In the CPD context, the ETA (approval) was a technical assessment of the fitness for use of a construction product for an intended use. All relevant characteristics and aspects for the use of the product were assessed, amongst others packaging, storage, transport, installation, and maintenance. • In the CPR context, the ETA (assessment) is based on an agreement between the manufacturer and the Technical Assessment Body (TAB) concerning those characteristics for which the manufacturer wishes to declare the performance and which might be relevant for the intended use. It is the documented assessment of the performance of a construction product as it has just been manufactured, in relation to its essential characteristics.

58

torque-expo.com

BAC_Avvio_TOR_Feb19.qxp 11/02/2019 18:50 Page 2

From this point on it was possible to apply for an ETA at the EOTA offices in Europe. Already in 2011, the first ETAs for screws in Germany were issued. Soon thereafter many more followed. On the basis of these ETAs a CE marking was now possible under the valid Construction Products Directive (CPD) 89/106/EEC. Innovations on several fronts and a confusion of markings Only when the version EN 14592:2008+A1:2012 came into force on 1 March 2013 CE marking was possible according to a harmonised standard. However, a further change took place with the replacement of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) 89/106/EEC by the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) 305/2011/EU on 1 July 2013. With this replacement, further extensive changes in connection with basic regulations came into force. For example, the former European Technical Approval became a European Technical Assessment. The previous guideline CUAP was to be replaced by an EAD - but this EAD was missing at the time of the changeover. From this point on it was no longer possible to apply for an ETA or to change existing ETAs, because a basic EAD was missing. The EAD was only published in 2017 and from this point on it was again possible to change ETAs or apply for new ones. From the beginning, the “Ü”-mark consisted of the German approval. This had to be used additionally for market access in Germany. According to the European Court of Justice (EuGH), this restriction for Germany was not admissible and after the judgement of 16 October 2014 this mark had to disappear. And so, it came that today more than 60 valid ETAs are in circulation in Europe and countless CE markings according to EN 14592:2008 for screws used in load-bearing timber constructions. EN 14592:2012 – CE Marking of Construction Products – Truth and myth Perhaps because of this eventful history, a common misunderstanding persists, namely that there would be a general CE labelling obligation for every fastener that is to be sold in Europe. What is true, is that an obligation to CE marking can be derived from various European directives, which by now cover a wide range of products (e.g. Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2006/95/EC, Medical Devices Directive (MDD) 93/42/EEC, Machinery Directive (MD) 2006/42/EC or Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC) 2004/108/EC), to name a few). For Construction Products it was the above mentioned Construction Product Directive (CPD) 89/106/EEC, which is now replaced by the Construction Product Regulation (CPR) 305/2011/EU. The CPR generally stipulates that construction products which are covered by a harmonized standard must be CE marked. As there are over 600 of harmonised standards issued by now, it can by quite tricky to clarify that question though. But even if the right standard is found, to decide whether it applies to a specific product and its specific application often requires deep knowledge of the relevant provisions. Figure 1 illustrates such a process to check, if a fastener must be CE marked or not. Once established that a CE marking based on a harmonised standard is necessary, it becomes a legal prerequisite for placing

Is a harmonised standard or a European Technical Assessment in existence to confirm the special characteristics of the construction product

the product on the market in the European Economic Area. The CE mark is therefore sometimes referred to as a “product passport” necessary for a product to enter the European Economic Area. Another important clarification concerns the fact that the CE mark is not a quality seal. With the CE mark the manufacturer only guarantees the conformity of a product with the declared performances and the compliance with all regulations for the CE marking. In the case of CE marking, however, the manufacturer has important obligations: • Preparation of a declaration of performance (DoP) for each product that is made available on the market (in printed or electronic form). • Provision of the declaration of performance (DoP) in the language of each country in which the product is provided. • Attachment of the CE marking to the construction product (or packaging) • Responsibility for the conformity of the construction product with the declared performance • Set up and conduction of a factory production control (FPC) Read more about the past and future of CE Marking of wood screws in April’s Torque Magazine. About the author, Werner Braun: Werner is a true fastener aficionado and he runs AVVIO, an Austrian based technical laboratory specialised on services around fasteners. AVVIO provides a wide range of testing and consulting services in regards of ETA and CE marking and developed its own quality seal AV24. BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION OPINION > SWG PRODUCTION

WHY SHOULD WE BUILD WITH

WOOD? On the face of it, using wood in construction sounds like a backward, ecologically unsound step. But the reality is significantly different, with benefits in CO2 emissions, sustainability, time, money, fire protection and more, argues SWG Production…

Wood can lend itself to original and innovative concepts from architects

uilding with wood is becoming more and more popular. On the other hand, there are statements like “Save the Rainforest!” or “Stop the Logging of Forests!” How does this fit together? And why should we build with wood anyway? The construction industry is continually facing new directives and regulations including new challenges. From this point of view, advanced technologies and modern building regulations increase the possibilities in timber construction. The flexibility and versatility of wood design allows a structural and aesthetic variety of building types and a great selection of applications. As a result, wood is increasingly used in new construction projects. More and more architects, engineers and private developers are realising the added value of wood structures as a cost-efficient alternative to steel and concrete. In summary, wooden constructions are not only innovative and adaptable, but also efficient.

B

FAST ASSEMBLY High speed and precision in building assembly are some of the significant advantages of wood construction. Thanks to socalled “dry construction” on-site, the buildings can be used right after the construction. Increasingly, hybrid architecture is being used in the timber construction field. This means that different materials will be connected together to form a load-bearing component in advance. For example, wood and concrete are often “married” in the ceiling area. This improves the load capacity, the span, the sound insulation and the fire protection of the building. To prevent or prolong the assembly process by introducing concrete and supporting the wooden beam ceiling during the concreting process, SWG Production has developed an innovative system for this purpose. The precast-connector is used for the production of wood-concrete composite ceilings and allows a dry connection of wood and concrete. Thus, the “concrete structure” can be easily integrated into the assembly process of the wooden building. Due to the dry construction, the buildings can be loaded immediately and can be moved into or rented out faster than constructions on the worksite. The whole process of prefabrication and fast assembly makes sure that the logistics on site are kept to a minimum. This leads automatically to a CO2 saving.

CARBON SEQUESTRATION Over the whole lifetime of the building the wood saves carbon. Wood is considered the only material that stores more CO2 than it repels. Based on an annual growth per hectare, the carbon content of beech is the highest number at 12,478kg CO2. The second most is the spruce with 11,441kg CO2. The two advantages of the carbon bond and the shortened assembly time make a good combination. The dry systems also make the removal of the building easy at the end of its functional life, because the wood components can be reused.

// Wood is increasingly used in new construction projects. More architects, engineers and private developers realise the value of wood structures. // CO2 EMISSIONS AND FOSSIL FUELS Wood is not only a renewable resource that grows naturally, it also helps humanity to improve its environmental footprint. As early as 1976, the National Research Council carried out research that found that building with wood uses less CO2 and fossil fuels than conventional building with materials such as steel, concrete or aluminum. The use of wood from sustainable forestry even reduces CO2 emissions by 31%. It is shown from the study “Carbon, Fossil Fuel, and Biodiversity Mitigation with Wood and Forests”. The use of wood as a building material also reduces the global consumption of fossil fuels. By using wood from sustainable forestry, up to 19% of lignite, hard coal, peat, natural gas and oil can be saved. This can also be concluded from the study “Carbon, Fossil Fuel, and Biodiversity Mitigation with Wood and Forests”. However, most carbon dioxide and fossil fuels can be saved if fossil fuels are not used to manufacture, transport and construction of a building.

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION OPINION > SWG PRODUCTION

FIRE PROTECTION This new construction trend for wood has created scepticism among governments, at first. In construction, all safety aspects and guidelines must be observed and fire protection plays a big role, too. Because of this, special fire protection tests were carried out before the construction of wooden buildings. The results of the test were amazing and confirmed the stability of wooden structures, furthermore, the wood even performed better than other materials in the test. In the trial, the CLT panels were exposed to a fire of 1,600 degrees Celsius for one hour. Solid wood carbonises more than it burns and is therefore very fireproof. TOTAL WEIGHT AND COSTS Buildings made of renewable raw materials have a much lower total weight than conventionally constructed buildings. When using components from renewable resources, the total weight can be reduced by up to 25%. Building with wood is also worthwhile from a cost point of view. Wooden buildings are no more expensive than comparable buildings in solid construction. The CO2 balance is much better for the timber construction method and some of the wooden buildings even reached a negative carbon footprint during production. DESIGN AND MODERNITY The design of a building with wood is important, too. Wooden buildings can be modern and aesthetically pleasing while the novelty value of the concept means there are a variety of original and innovative ideas (and implementation) possibilities. By using wood, architects can lead the way as pioneers. Every new experience represents an advance in the timber construction sector, thus contributing to the appreciation of wooden buildings. FOREST CLEARING The principle of “sustainable use” was conceived more than 300 years ago. At that time a lot of wood was needed for mining in Germany. Hans Carl von Carlowitz recognised the problem and asked to ensure the long-term use of the forests. In the long run a careful handling of resources as well as a continuous planting of new trees should guarantee sustainable wood mining.

Timber construction has short building times, rapidly creating value With this system of sustainable forestry and correct handling the ecosystem survives, while enough trees can be used for building construction at the same time. The secret of sustainable forest management is that new forest areas are regularly created and old areas are replanted. So it’s not that complicated. One of the pioneers in timber construction are the Scandinavian countries. They have developed a clever forestry system, too. There, everyone is encouraged to plant three to four new trees for every tree they cut down. “Today we have twice as much forest as we had one hundred years ago,” says Arne Olsson. The 1,000 m³ of wood that has been installed in a recent project is replaced in a Swedish forest “in just a minute.” Globally, there is enough extra wood to sustainably harvest and to construct buildings and bridges out of it. Both things are needed to reduce annual CO2 emissions up to 31% and fossil fuel consumption up to 19%. In total, 17 million m³ of wood can be harvested annually and re-cultivated with sustainable forestry without damaging the forest. Currently only 20% of that available wood (17 million m³) is used.

// The secret of sustainable forest management is that new forest areas are created and old areas are replanted. So it’s not that complicated. // CONCLUSIONS Building with wood has many advantages and should be expanded in Germany and other territories, too. With not only short construction times, but also the rapid value creation and the cost-effective construction it is more and more interesting for developers and builders to think about wooden constructions. Also in the public arena it is becoming more famous. It is important to sustainably manage forests today, not just for the next generation. The consequence of the effective use of wood makes an important but not overwhelming contribution to saving CO2. In the long term, the greatest savings potential will be achieved with sustainable forestry. This

62

torque-expo.com

BAC_SWG_TOR_Feb19.qxp 11/02/2019 18:54 Page 4

means that no more wood may be removed from the forests than can regrow. The goal of the strategy is to increase carbon storage in the forest while achieving an annual yield of wood. However, the cycle for the economic use of the wood is only possible if a corresponding demand exists. A desired goal must be to maintain and expand the demand for building materials from renewable raw materials.

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION WOOD & DECKING SCREWS

Screw it Improved efficiency paired with less resistance seems to be the hot trend in the woodscrew industry right now. We explore who’s leading the way in our jam-packed round-up… HEXSTONE Hextone’s Vortex screw is a high quality, multi-purpose screw, recognised in the industry for its premium quality and tailored product features. Vortex screws are fully CE compliant to EN 14592:2008 & A1:2012. The sharp, wide and deep thread on the product features ‘Saw Fix’ serrated thread technology, enabling the product to quickly and easily power through surfaces. The screw can be used on a range of materials including hardwood, decking, MDF, plastic and sheet metal. Vortex screws are available in diameters from 3.5mm to 6mm, and lengths ranging from 12mm to 200mm.

TENZ Austrian woodscrew manufacturer, TENZ, won a Consulting Engineering State Prize for its Low-Energy Woodscrew in 2017 with the judges hailing it ‘ingeniously simple – simply ingenious.’ The woodscrew features TENZ’s innovative Stairs Thread Technology, in which stairs along the screw’s thread significantly reduce screwing resistance, therefore it requires less effort to place the screw. The screw’s oscillating movement during screwing minimises friction and facilitates work through minimal effort and power demand. This technology speeds up a task considerably, preventing the user from becoming tired as quickly and helping to prolong the battery life of cordless tools. The TENZ Low-Energy Woodscrew was first sold at the start of 2018 and is now available in the US, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. This year, a US-based DIY chain took the decision to equip its homebrand decking screw with TENZ technology, making it available in 2,200 DIY stores across North America. www.tenz.at

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION WOOD& DECKING SCREWS KWANTEX Headquartered in Taiwan, deck screw manufacturer Kwantex has been dedicating its efforts to a number of Research and Development projects, including improving its performance in the wood-working industry. Kwantex has developed its latest woodscrew solution; the KTX-Jig Hidden Decking Screw System, suitable for both professional and DIY use on outdoor decking with the aim of giving the appearance of a fastenerfree deck surface through side fastening. The Hidden Screw System has an easyto-operate jig which installs ‘invisible’ carbon or stainless steel M4.8 screws

through clamping, with help of a double-sided screw guiding hole. The KTX-Jig has a fastening angle of 60 degrees, and the gap between decks can be fixed at either 2.5mm, 3.5mm or 5mm. The KTX-Jig has two clip widths, size small (85-110mm) and medium (110-150mm) and can be used with various deck materials, such as ACQ Pine, Composite, PVC and IPE. Besides side fastening, KTX-Hidden Decking Screws can also be driven from the top of the deck board directly without using the KTX-Jig. www.kwantex.com.tw

N E FASTENERS West Midlands-based NE Fasteners’ broad product line-up includes premium screw range Turboqwik, a brand the firm has had in the portfolio for a number of years since it acquired it. Relaunched a couple of years ago, NE Fasteners is pushing the range out to distributors. What makes Turboqwik so special? The screws feature six reaming nibs under the head, for perfect countersinking and no burrs. The unique SAWFIX design includes a coarse serrated thread for extra quick drilling. In addition, the extra sharp drilling point drives and requires no

pre-drilling. Meanwhile the reinforced head boasts increased torque and reduces breakages. Around 15 people work at NE Fasteners’ Cradley Heath HQ, which includes a 7,000 ft² warehouse and packaging division, from which it also operates online shop Screwshop.co.uk, available to end users and distributors alike. The firm can provide a wide range of finishes, including zinc, electro brass, black, chrome, satin chrome, bronze and nickel, with packaging options too. NE Fasteners also offers a wide range of kitting options, value add services and niche products. www.nefasteners.co.uk

HECO The HECO-UNIX top board screw with contraction effect is now available with a small raised countersunk head in two additional stainless steel variants. The HECOUNIX top full-threaded screw is now available from HECO in lengths of 40 and 60 mm, in A2 stainless steel. The Schramberg screw specialist is meeting customers’ growing demand for a board screw which is weatherproof while scoring top marks with a welldesigned finish. Thanks to the small, visually appealing raised countersunk head, the board screw isn’t just in demand for use in floors; it is also suitable for numerous other applications where screw heads are visible.

The stainless steel variants can be used in timbers containing aggressive substances and in areas where moisture and condensation can develop, e.g. Skirting boards and screw connections for windows and wet room doors. The screws stay bright and prevent black edges forming around the screw to prevent appearance being affected by moisture. In addition to the existing 3.5x50 mm dimensions, the new variants measuring 40-60 mm long extend the possible applications for such requirements. HECO is exhibiting in Hall 1, Stand 546, at Stuttgart Fastener Fair in March. www.heco-schrauben.com

SHOW REVIEW BAU 2019

BAU LAYS DIGITAL PLANS The biennial BAU exhibition grew once again this year and launched a new digital-centric spin-off show, to take place in Cologne next year… unich’s BAU show grew again last month, breaking its own records for exhibitor numbers and overseas visitors. Around 2,250 exhibitors were plying their wares in Messe Munchen, while 250,000 visitors came through the show doors, 85,000 of which were from overseas (80,500 in 2017), from 150 countries. Leading the table of visitors from outside Germany were again the neighbouring countries of Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Big rises in the number of

M

visitors from the Russian Federation (over 4,000 visitors this year) and China (over 3,500) put these countries in fourth and fifth place respectively, their highest ranking so far. The big show news was the official launch of ‘digitalBAU’ – a new trade show designed to tap into the trend for digital solutions in the building market. Debuting in Cologne next year (11-13 Feb), digitalBAU is a joint project in cooperation with the German Association of Building Software (Bundesverband Bausoft-

BAU ON TOUR One of BAU’s more unusual show features takes place outside the Messe Munich show halls. The Long Night of Architecture, now in its fifth year, is organised by BAU and takes trade visitors, exhibitors and architecture fans on a tour of impressive buildings and projects in the Bavarian capital. The Tour is no small event. This year, visitors had a choice of seven different bus routes to different buildings on the programme, which this year included 76 (70 in 2017). In total a staggering 35,000 people took part in the Long Night of Architecture. Highlights included the Palais an der Oper, the Architecture Gallery and the Hofstatt. The Church of the Sacred Heart, KARE Kraftwerk and OSRAM’s company HQ also were among the popular tour spots.

ware—BVBS). BVBS MD Michael Fritz is confident the new event will be a success: “We see high demand among all suppliers of digital applications to establish a further trade fair alongside the already very successful BAU. Planners, building firms and the skilled trades must inform themselves about the upcoming challenges and with digitalBAU we are offering an excellent opportunity for them to do so.” BAU will return, 11-16 January 2021 at Messe München. bau-muenchen.com

The new Siemens Headquarters, in which the Long Night of Architecture was officially opened, was also part of the programme, for the first time since it was completed in 2016. “This HQ is a real reflection of Munich architecture—a mix of tradition and future,” said Thomas Braun, General Manager Siemens Real Estate. The historic building was renovated and seamlessly integrated into the modern new building. It is an inspiring new place of work right in the heart of the city—and at the same time a quiet place for visitors to meet, because the Siemens Passageway is open to all.” In almost all the buildings there were guided tours or a small programme of events with highlights for the visitors. Queues formed at many of the buildings, but despite the frosty temperatures, people waited patiently for their turn to get a look inside, often in buildings that are not usually open for the public.

TORQUE COMMENT S&P SOFTWARE CONSULTING

Introduction of EN 1992-4 Australian regs may have unwittingly played a role in the divising of EN 1992-4, but nevertheless new calculation guidelines will affect the design of fastenings in concrete in Europe shortly...

n spring 2019, EN 1992-4 is finally about to be introduced as a calculation guideline. This new code will replace a whole string of dimensioning regulations which have been used for many years in the calculation of fastenings: • ETAG 001 Metal Anchors For Use In Concrete • TR 029 Design Of Bonded Anchors • TR 020 Evaluation Of Anchorages In Concrete Concerning Resistance To Fire • TR 045 Design Of Metal Anchors For Use In Concrete Under Seismic Actions This code has been announced numerous times but modifications, which were constantly being made to it, delayed the introduction considerably. Interestingly, a country which could not be geographically located further away

I

from the European Union played a pioneering role in developing this new code - Australia. The Australian code SA TS 101 was introduced in 2015 and corresponds largely with EN 1992-4, which makes it safe to assume that it was used as its template. While manufacturers of fasteners are faced with the task of converting their European Technical Assessments for use with the new code, planners and engineers have to apply it error-free. In addition to small changes and more detailed adaptations to the current state of the art, concrete proofs are now based on cylinder compressive strengths rather than cube compressive strengths. Moreover, an additional modification factor has to be taken into account when designing the fastening against concrete cone failure and the proofs of steel resistance against shear loads have been extended.

Figure 1 Discontinuity in the calculation method: positioning of one anchor only a single millimetre closer to the edge leads to the failure of the whole structure.

However, development will not stop just because this calculation method has been launched. Further enhancements will gradually be introduced on the basis of current research, for example regarding proofs against splitting as well as the general use of fasteners in cracked concrete. It has been known for a long time that the current calculation methods contain discontinuities. For instance, small changes to anchor locations in anchor groups can lead to abrupt and dramatic changes of their resistance if the current calculation methods are strictly applied. Sometimes, the positioning of one of the anchor group’s anchors by only a single millimetre closer to the edge may be sufficient to increase the stress in such a way that the whole fastening structure fails numerically (see Fig. 1). Furthermore, there are discrepancies in the results between the application of anchor theory and anchor rail theory to a group of head bolts, for example. This is due to the fact that anchors and anchor rails are usually produced by different groups of manufacturers who independently developed different design methods. Since tests showed that the load-bearing mechanisms are basically the same the different calculation methods should lead to comparable results just the same. Completely incomprehensible for planning engineers is the fact that anchor theory and rebar theory are fundamentally different, even though their disparate calculation methods can be applied to the same steel rods which are fastened under the same geometric parameters to the same concrete using the same mortar. However, by far the biggest unsolved problem of today is the determination of a sufficiently rigid anchor plate. Numerous tests showed that one of the basic assumptions in structural

analysis - Bernoulli’s hypothesis that flat surfaces always remain flat under stress - is not valid when using flat anchor plates with common thicknesses based on a proof against stress in the anchor plate alone. In reality, this leads to a nonlinear distribution of the anchor forces whereas all state-ofthe-art calculation methods are based on the assumption of a linear anchor force distribution. In order to carry out a calculation which is closer to reality but still on the safe side, the determination of anchor plate thicknesses will have to be changed fundamentally. Anchor plates with reinforcement ribs will have to be introduced and dimensioned using FEM. The anchors themselves may no longer be considered as stiff steel rods but as springs with characteristic spring curves. In the end, even the anchor proofs may have to be adapted regarding non-linear anchor force distribution. All these changes, additions and enhancements will be incorporated into software solutions for the design and calculation of fastening systems step-by-step. This gives the user the guarantee of always employing the latest state of the art calculation methods, thus offering the manufacturer of fasteners and fixings an effective and sustainable means of customer loyalty by ensuring that the product range is applied adequately and in a manner that minimises liability.

TORQUE COMMENT WEB SECURITY

Which online threats are putting your business at risk? Part two of OGL Computer’s round-up of some of the email and web security threats that are potentially putting your company at risk…

usiness Email Compromise (BEC) scams are among the most common cyber security threats impacting businesses globally (Torque Magazine, Nov-Dec 2018). Sadly, BEC is just one of many cyber menaces facing the corporate world.

B

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attack Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are becoming a much more prominent cyber threat and have the potential to cripple a business, as the downtime they experience might set them back considerably. According to IT Pro, there were an average of 237 DDoS attacks on UK organisations a month in Q3 of 2017, which is the equivalent to eight attacks a day. DDoS attacks on UK businesses has increased by 35% from Q2 and is up more than 90% compared to Q1 of 2017. What is a Distributed Denial of Service? A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is a form of Denial of Service attack. A DDoS attack is when the perpetrator seeks to take down a target’s network and resources so that its intended users cannot access it. Denial of Service literally means that this attack floods the targeted resource and denies everyone else access to the affected service. In a DDoS attack, this flood of traffic comes from multiple sources, making it near enough impossible to block it, as it has not come from an original source. Blackmail, revenge and activism have been common

72

torque-expo.com

motivations for this sort of cyber attack - one of the most famous DDoS attacks came from activist group, Anonymous. A DDoS attack means that website will lose traffic through disappointed visitors who won’t return to the site. They also damage the business’s reputation, impact on productivity and efficiency within the workplace. Alongside this, there will be a lack of sales during the downtime, and compensation for any damages will need to be considered. The National Lottery - A Damaging DDoS Attack In 2017 the UK National Lottery experienced a DDoS attack during peak time. It took the site and mobile app offline, stopping UK players buying a lottery ticket online, from 7pm to 11pm on 30 September. After the attack had died down, the website experienced minor issues until 3am. It’s thought that a group of cybercriminals named Phantom Squad were linked to this attack – they’d previously sent spam emails to websites demanding $720 worth of Bitcoin, or they would experience a DDoS attack. How to Prevent a DDoS Attack Every business needs to make sure they’re taking a prevention rather than cure approach - if your business relies on internet-facing servers, you need to have proactive web security strategy that will act as a defence barrier that quarantines any threats before they even hit your network. Real-time protection that’s “always-on” is the best approach, and you need to

COMMENT_OGL_TOR_Feb19.qxp 11/02/2019 19:06 Page 2

implement software that mitigates any dangers whilst allowing users to visit and use the site normally as much as possible, even during an attack, protecting your network from any data breaches during a potential attack and having a backup, alternative system to work from during the downtime. When you choose to implement web and email security software that detects, identifies and mitigates DDoS attacks and other cyber threats, you’re adding another layer of security for your business. By implementing a hybrid solution of cloudbased security and on-premise security, it means that you can detect any on-premise threats early on and then escalate it to the cloud when it’s become too big for on-premise to maintain. This is because the majority of DDoS protection solutions use DNS redirection, which means that traffic is rerouted persistently through the security software (preventing the attackers from penetrating your business’s network), and the cloudbased security software can be scaled to match the DDoS campaign. This also means that your normal users are rerouted to an alternative architecture. Malware The National Cyber Security Centre reported an “increase in malware variants [...] causing problems for UK businesses” and that “cyber attacks against UK business increased to unprecedented levels in 2017”. Malware has proliferated, and it’s becoming much more sophisticated as every new strand develops. In 2005 it was reported that there were 123 strands of new malware found every day, 10,000 of which were new strains of Malware. Fast forward a decade later, research has shown that four new strands of malicious malware were discovered every second during Q3 of 2016. What is Malware? Malware (aka malicious software), is a program or file that poses a threat and is harmful to a computer user. There are millions of types, including ransomware, worms, spyware, Trojan horses and botnets. Sophisticated strains of malware can perform an array of functions, from hijacking computer functions to monitor a business’ computer action without permission or encrypting and deleting sensitive data. As these strains develop and grow managers, CEOs and direc-

tors need to ensure that they’re putting reactive security measures in place that stops malware from even penetrating your network. How to Prevent Malware As well as educating your employees about cyber-security awareness, you need to choose the right security software that will protect your business. Ensuring that your business’s network is protected from harmful content that could potentially compromise your organisation’s network is crucial. When you choose a solution that looks for email and activity with web-borne malware in real-time, you’re adding that extra layer of protection. Implementing firewalls alongside this will also mean that you’re preventing any unauthorised activity from entering your network. Prevention Rather Than Cure - Web and Email Security No matter how big or small your business is, you can no longer ignore online security. Having a real-time, reactive security strategy and Disaster Mitigation and Recovery plan in place is integral to the survival of your organisation in the online world. A survey by OGL had shown that one in five (20%) businesses have no Disaster Mitigation or Recovery plan in place, but they were formulating one. Alongside this, over half (51%) of businesses claimed that they could not go for more than one working day, should the cloud systems they rely on experience downtime during a hardware failure, a DoS or DDoS attack or a data breach. Cindy Phillips, Marketing Manager at OGL, says: “OGL's Web Security service protects your business from harmful, offensive or inappropriate content. Our comprehensive real-time traffic inspection looks for web-borne malware that could be a potential threat to your business. “For that extra layer of security, our Email Security service offers protection for inbound and outbound emails. Using CensorNet's cloud-based technology, inbound and outbound emails are scanned for viruses, phishing threats, content violations and spam. By doing this in the cloud we remove the burden on your local server and can offer backup for unlimited email for up to seven years. It is up to you to put that extra protective barrier in place.”

OGL Computer is the technology partner to over 1,200 businesses in the UK. Having spent 40 years in the IT industry, OGL has contributed to the growth and success of thousands of companies by helping them harness the power of technology to drive their business forward. In the early days, OGL supplied Olivetti typewriters and basic accounting systems, these days it offers everything from cutting-edge cloud-based infrastructures to simple IT support packages and advanced cyber protection, as well as its own award-winning business software system – prof.ITplus. www.ogl.co.uk

COMMUNITY

What has the Torque Community been getting up to...?

WORLD’S OLDEST LIFEBOAT BACK ON THE WATER

BAPP BACKS HURRICANEDEVASTATED SCHOOL APP customer John Reid & Sons (REIDSteel) asked the firm to join a consortium of UK businesses to help rebuild the Enis Adams Primary School in the British Virgin Islands. Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated areas of the Caribbean last year, with the primary school among other important community buildings left in ruins. The BAPP Group of companies contributed to steel, fasteners and associated products that were put on the water in four 40 ft cargo containers, last November. Disaster-resistant buildings are among the specialities of REIDSteel, which designed and manufactured the steelwork to withstand any future hurricanes. Virgin Islands businessman Peter Haycraft, a longstanding client of REIDsteel with his former business Road Town Wholesale, pledged $1m of his own money for the school reconstruction to help the local community.

B

espected Redcar boat builder Tony Young is revamping the world’s oldest surviving lifeboat, which has made its first journey in 55 years for the renovation to take

R

place. The Zetland Lifeboat was built in 1802 in South Shields and purchased by the people of Redcar. She went on to see 62 years of service, saving more than 500 lives before she was retired in 1864. The lifeboat was brought out of retirement to effect one last rescue in 1880 when the brig ‘Luna’ breached Redcar pier – all seven members of the vessel’s crew were saved. AV Dawson and Johnsons Haulage carefully transported the lifeboat to the banks of the river Tees for the programme of sympathetic conservation, which will preserve her structural integrity for generations to come. The project had been struggling to find a warehouse with an overhead crane in order to carry out the work, so AV Dawson stepped in. Close to when this magazine lands, the old vessel will be returning to its boathouse at the Zetland Lifeboat Museum and Redcar Heritage Centre, ready for when the venue reopens in Spring 2019.

BUILDERS MERCHANT IS ON BOARD WITH ‘ORIENT EXPRESS’ RECREATION outh of England-based Covers Timber & Builders Merchants has created a train carriage buffet car mimicking the Orient Express, for a local care home. The carriage replica will provide residents with an area to enjoy hot drinks, cakes and snacks in surroundings reminiscent of the bygone era of steam travel. It is being installed by Blue Water Care Home at its property on Kingston Road and the new structure will include its very own ticket office and waiting room area. As well as rare items sourced by Blue Water Care Home, including seats, train doors, and luggage racks dating back to the 1930s, Covers Timber & Builders Merchants will be donating a range of building materials to help the dementia care specialist complete its ambitious project.
