Play and Exploration

Early childhood education at Torit embraces the inherent curiosity and natural way children explore the world, which is hands-on, up close, and personal. Woven into the overall curriculum is the Montessori method, which encourages testing, experimenting, and using all five senses to learn and grow.

We welcome children 1 month to 5 years old to our infant, toddler and preprimary rooms on a rolling basis as space allows.

Singing along with classmates and teachers, formally and informally, is a regular part of each day at Torit, as are weekly lessons with the music teacher. As children grow to preschool, choral patterns and the playing of instruments in patterns offer increasing opportunity to hone musical thinking.

Torit’s curriculum includes lessons in Arabic, Spanish and Mandarin, and we weave cultural materials and learning into all we do. Holiday celebrations, including Chinese New Year, Diwali, Eid, Hanukkah and Christmas, offer wonderful opportunities to learn about the food, clothing, history, and geography of people around the world.

Music, Art, Language and Culture

The introduction of foundational skills in painting, drawing, and sculpture begins as soon as children can grip a crayon or paint brush, with basic materials and concepts provided for exploration.

Children learn to hone those skills in preprimary and elementary years.

Montessori materials often allow for multiple levels of challenge and naturally encourage the child to learn and grow at his or her own pace.

Each material brings the child, one step at a time, through a curriculum of increasing complexity.

The fine motor focus, attention to detail, and the sorting and categorizing that characterizes the toddler curriculum leads smoothly to the understanding of gradation and the number system, and allows learning from fine, beautifully refined materials in the preschool years.

The Montessori materials and lessons, designed in the environment respectfully and thoughtfully by the teacher, help children develop work habits, organizational skills, and general thinking strategy, but they never teach children the answers. Teachers model respect for the materials when they demonstrate the work and as they move about the classroom and that respect, itself, teaches the children.

Montessori Work

Throughout the Montessori classroom, you will see children working with materials that are appealingly designed to encourage the child’s natural desire to learn about and test the properties of real-world materials.

Each classroom is set up with this idea in mind, allowing toddlers to explore on their own and choose activities and play during work time. Following the Montessori method, new materials are introduced in a way that allows the student to practice and learn at their own pace.

No single school campus could ever house the lessons in history or scientific advances for which opportunities abound in Boston. We utilize our strategic location in designing curriculum at Torit, and recognize and build in consistent opportunities to bring to life the richest lessons of American history and understandings of civic life. Students experience the myriad examples of cutting edge science surrounding us in Boston and its environs, as well as abundant opportunities to enjoy art, music, history and just plain fun.
