The Bible from Alef to Tav In the early s when my eldest son aniel was able to sit with me in synagogue, I used to lean over to him and whisper in his ear a sort of simultaneous translation of the Torah portion into words he could understand. This was all right for a while until the day he complained, â€œ ommy, why can t I have my own book now â€? I began thinking about what such a book would look like. Of course it would have plenty of illustrations, and the stories would be told in plain, simple English. There was nothing like this in our local ewish bookstore or in the town library. Thus, the idea for a new children s Bible was hatched. hildren often learn right alongside their parents, and the reverse is true, too, especially today when many children are becoming literate in Bible and ewish practice before their parents. So the book evolved into a way for children and adults to learn Bible stories and the letters of the Hebrew Alef Bet together. aniel and aura, my two older children are past needing such a book now. However, their little brother Gil, who is three years old, will be ust the right age to bring The Bible from Alef to Tav with him so he can read along when the grownups are reading the Torah portion. ay this Bible bring the teachings of the Hebrew Bible and the wisdom of the Hebrew Alef Bet to all those who want to learn. enina . hen the world began, God breathed over the waters. God has many names. One name begins with a breath. One name of God begins with the letter .
Elohim starts with . made the heavens and the earth. made Adam (Adam). was the first human being. Adam was born from the adamah (earth). Elohim took a fistful of earth and shaped it into Adam. Bet is the second letter of the alef bet, and it sounds like the letter “B.” It is also a word that means “house” or bayit. an you see a house in the letter is the kind of house where the front door is always open so that all the words and stories of the Torah can come out and step right onto these pages where you can read them.

It means “beginning.” The very first story in the Torah is the story of the beginning of the world. hen you were born, that was your beginning. hen the world was born, that was another kind of beginning. ome inside the door of , find a co y chair or lap to sit on, and listen to what happened

On the first day, Elohim created light from the darkness so we could see. On the second day, Elohim made heaven up above so the sun, moon, and stars would have a place to live.
On the third day, Elohim made all the things that grow from little seeds and give us their fruits and vegetables to eat the grasses that give us wheat, barley, and rye to make the flour that we use in breads and cakes the plants that give us peas, beans, peppers, grapes, and strawberries to use in salad and fruit cups the trees that give us figs, almonds, and apples to eat and en oy. an you name some more fruits and vegetables that you like to eat On the fourth day, Elohim made the sun, moon, and stars to light up the sky by day and night.
On the fifth day, Elohim made the fish to swim in the waters and the birds to fly in the air. On the si th day, Elohim made the animals that creep and crawl on the earth.
Elohim also made Adam and Eve, the first people to live on the earth along with all other living things. Together the first people, the first plants and trees, the first fish and birds and animals learned how to feed and take care of one another so they could all keep growing on the earth forever.
On the seventh day, the world was all done. Elohim stopped making things. Elohim took the time to give a brakhah (blessing) for the seventh day. A is a way of giving thanks for something wonderful. In Hebrew, each starts with
“Barukh Attah Adonai” (Blessed are you, God...). This day that Elohim blessed is called Shabbat, the day of rest.

Shabbat feels like a brakhah, like a uiet and peaceful
Shabbat is like a that you can go and live in at the end of every week. eople started copying Elohim, resting on the seventh day, too. hen you enter the bayit of Shabbat, you stop doing the things and making the things you do all the other days of the week. ou ust feel the beauty of this world that Elohim has made. ou take a walk in the woods, or read a book, or eat a delicious, yummy meal with your family and friends. These are the brakhot of the day of rest.
