"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." - Rob Stiltanen 1 TopCity Rise

Drip, Drip, Drip. Is your bucket full?
TopCity Rise 5
By: Tricia Sublet
“That was so traumatic!” I work with many teens in my counseling office, and this is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot. I also have noticed a normalization of using terms such as “bipolar,” “panic attacks,” and “depressed.” With the common use of terms, I sometimes think the actual meaning gets lost. Do we actually know what Trauma Traditionally,is? we think trauma is something like a car accident, kidnapping, or war. Yes, all of those could indeed be very traumatic experiences. However, as I look back over the past two years, I think we all have endured a long-term, non-single-event trauma by living through a Thepandemic.pandemic affected every person in some small or big ways. I describe it as a leaking faucet. When I put a bucket under that drip, eventually, that bucket gets filled, one drop at a time. The pandemic changed everything. Work from home. DRIP. Zoom school for my kids. DRIP. A friend or I caught COVID. DRIP. Someone was hospitalized or died. DRIP. Missed holidays or celebrations. DRIP. Online everything. DRIP. Lack of time with friends. DRIP. Political elections and unrest. DRIP. Disagreements about mask mandates. DRIP. Controversy over vaccinations. DRIP. Social and racial divides and conflict. DRIP. DRIP. DRIP. . . The thing about a drip is that I may not even notice that the levels in my buck are rising. I may not notice until I’m about to spill over. I’ve learned through many times of trial and error how important it is for me to be able to check in with myself. It’s crucial for me to notice the levels in my bucket. If they do spill over, what will that look like for me? What are my clues?

6
I’ve learned that these are some of mine:
o I want to withdraw, not be involved in anything, and just watch Netflix.
o I have less patience. The same joke that was funny yesterday annoys me today.
When I start to see and feel these things, I know my bucket is getting full. Maybe full from stress, maybe exhaustion, maybe bigger life things on my mind. Perhaps it’s just full from running hard in all the areas that life asks of me. But when I see these things in myself, I know that I won’t be running much longer if I cannot stop to drain some of the water from my bucket.
o My lack of enjoyment in my time with my kids.
o When something gets added to my calendar, I want to cry.
o My internal “eye-roll” when someone shares something with me that I deem “not a big deal.”
o My responses to others are short and unkind.
If your bucket is getting full, there is no shame in that. In fact, most likely many people around you would understand that feeling as well. First, it is important to know that emotions do not last forever, and even bad days will pass. It’s important to know there are ways you can care for yourself: music, nature, vacation, journaling, exercise, or bubble baths. Ask yourself what you might need. And, it’s essential that you know that you do not have to do it alone. Find your support. Connect with a friend. Talk with a spouse. Join a community group. Find a counselor. Ask yourself, who do you trust and has your back? And, reach out to them AND (lean in for this one) LET THEM HELP. LET THEM BE A PART OF YOUR WORLD. You are worth that!
o I’m easily irritable (see above not-funny joke).
It’s important to notice my clues. Do you notice yours? We can learn to listen to those clues by paying attention to ourselves. What emotions am I experiencing the most recently? What tension or stress does my body feel? What are my interactions with others like? How do I manage changes in plans, added things to my calendars, or new tasks from my boss?

It didn’t come as a surprise when we heard that lifelong Topekan, Timothy Vincent was opening Community Woodworking Co; Why? Because his family is full of amazing entrepreneurs like, his brother Matt, of Golden Rule, his brother David, of Circle Coffee, and his sister Hannah of Hair by Hannah. When Timothy decided he wanted to start Community Woodworking Co it wasn’t really an "Aha" moment but it was thoughts and ideas that had been forming over time. “I have been so blessed to have an abundance of both siblings and friends who have started businesses, which encouraged me to take my next step.” As Tim contemplated building a business, he began to research the market in our community and discovered there was a lack of businesses focused on woodworking and custom furniture so he took a leap of faith. Since the start of his business in February, it has grown so much that with our community’s support, he has since been able to work full time in his business without the need for another income source.

Building Community Community Woodworking Co.

Although his business is young, Tim has had experience working in construction, management, remodeling, andelectrical fields over the past twelve years, which has given him a large wheelhouse of skills as he works with clients to create a seamless experience from start to finish. “I have always loved working with my hands and woodworking was just another way I expressed this skill in a creative way.” He specializes in custom furniture ranging from but not limited to: Dining tables, coffee tables, shelving, signs, benches, and more. If you have visited Circle Coffee…… you have seen his Timhandiwork.andhis wife Andrea love our community and all the amazing people in it. They have a huge heart for children in foster care and not only care for a sweet little three-year-old but currently donate 3% of all yearly income to support foster care work in our community. But the dream of supporting the community doesn’t stop there. They have a heart to continue to invest back into our community to support those who have not had the same opportunities they were given in life.
Tim’s long-term goal is to have a makerspace on the south-east side of Topeka that would be accessible to all. A space where community members can come in and have access to high quality tools to learn new skills that they can apply professionally or just aid in their everyday lives.

Tim ~ “The legacy I hope to leave is that others see I loved people well in a way that they knew they are loved by Christ no matter who or what they have done. Also, that I didn't do anything for my own selfish gain, but all for the good of the community.”
What does this business mean for you and your family?
this article you have fallen in love with the heart and passion behind these works of art and you’ll be inspired to take your next steps of building a brighter future for our community. Maybe it’s not becoming an entrepreneur but supporting our community of entrepreneurs is just as important to help safeguard our local economy and build a strong future for the next generation growing up in Topeka.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
Tim ~ “I could give an easy answer of "It means everything". But at the end of the day no matter how much money I make, this isn't a business for me. I have been given these skills to create lasting pieces of art that I hope spark conversation and collaboration to build a stronger Hopefully, community.”asyouread

Unity for Community M.A.D Marketing TopCity Rise
One evening while enjoying drinks and a meal at The Cyrus in downtown Topeka, Miranda Chavez-Hazim, Alison Beebe and Danielle Norwood had a lightbulb moment. They were discussing the fact that they all have skills and talents and have been working on building their own marketing brands. As the conversation continued, there was synergy in the making. Danielle suggested creating a company and working together, Miranda had the concept of the firm name and it’s our huge honor to introduce to you….M.A.D. Marketing!!!
The main focus of this trio will be working with local businesses and making their company accessible to all demographics of clients. They are offering influencer marketing, as well as services like photography, videography, social media management, event hosting and focus groups.

TopCity Rise Miranda was born in Topeka and has enjoyed raising her two children in Topeka with her husband SJ Hazim. During the lockdown of 2020 Miranda took advantage of the free time and was able to work on building her photography business, Hazim Happenings. She has fallen in love with being an entrepreneur and enjoys spending time pursuing her passion. Over the last couple years her skills and talent for capturing the sights of our local community has grown even stronger. She loves shooting the moments that become memories and all the things in lived in Topeka for about 25 years and has worked as a psychiatric RN starting years ago at The Menninger Foundation and now with the VA. As her love for unique local businesses grew, she began to develop a passion for sharing her experiences in Topeka. You might know her better as TopCity Flavorista! She has been helping small businesses with social media management a couple years now and is thrilled to be starting a second company with amazing people like Miranda and Danielle. Danielle is one of the greatest personalities in radio and we are lucky to have her right here in Topeka. She moved here in 2017 and began working as a newscaster and a talk-show host at WIBW-AM and now hosts the Majic 107.7 Morning Show with Shawn Knight. She specializes in interviews, voice overs, and has been a presenter and emcee for many events like the Kentucky Derby Denim to Diamonds Gala that was just last month! Her carefree and down to earth personality is a perfect fit to create a welcoming environment for community conversations. 31

Miranda ~ “I love that a lot of small businesses support each other. I've witnessed it & it's a beautiful thing. I love that I can go to the farmers market or event & make a new friend or connect someone with another. I'm an activator & once I've learned that about myself it made sense.”
TopCity Rise 32 Of course, it just made sense for the three of these ladies to bring their talents and merge efforts together to form M.A.D. Marketing! They are passionate about connecting with people and look forward to teaming up and assisting in the growth of other local businesses to leave a positive imprint in our community. They have been working with “Creative Pathways and Means”, owned by Connor England and SJ Hazim to build a business plan and received training, support and direction to build a firm foundation to kick start their business. If you are needing marketing, photography or event hosting services give these gals a call! When you see them at a community event make sure you say hello and show them some Email:love!madmarketing785@gmail.com
What do you love about our community?
What does this business mean for you?
Danielle ~ “This business signifies the beginning of a brand-new journey. I have never owned a business, so there's some trepidation and nerves on my end. The comfort is having two of my closest friends with me as we join forces together to make our community an even better place to live. I want to see Topeka and northeast Kansas reach their full potential. To be a part of a place where people want to work, play, and live.”
Alison ~ “Entrepreneurship really came looking for me. I’ve heard the naysayers bash Topeka and I realized that there must be things to do, see, eat, & enjoy so I set out to prove them wrong. Meeting and befriending so many local business owners showed me how much support they truly needed. I started posting about businesses I liked and that later morphed into my own company. It’s like being a high school cheerleader all over again sans pom poms! I believe it’s similar to our business idea. The three of us adore supporting local and often do so together so it came naturally.”
When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
