Dementia On 21 September it will be World Alzheimer’s Day, and National Dementia Carer’s Day also falls in September. So, I thought it was a good opportunity for me to write an article about Dementia, what it is like from the perspective of the family and how you can take care of yourself if you are looking after a loved one with the disease.

What is dementia?

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, the word dementia describes a set of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem solving or language. Changes are often very small to begin with, but are still severe enough to affect a person’s daily life. Dementia can also affect someone’s mood or behaviour.

What causes dementia?

Dementia is caused when diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes, damage the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, but not all cases of dementia are caused by Alzheimer’s. Types of dementia include: • Alzheimer’s disease – Brain cells are surrounded by an abnormal protein and their internal structure is damaged. Eventually some cells also die. The first problems to be noticed tend to be issues with day-to-day memory.

• Vascular dementia – The oxygen supply to the brain is reduced because of narrowing or blocked blood vessels and some cells become damaged or die. This can occur suddenly following one large stroke, or over a longer period of time through a series of smaller strokes. Symptoms often overlap with those of Alzheimer’s.

• Mixed dementia – When someone has more than one type of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s and vascular, and a mixture of symptoms.

• Dementia with Lewy bodies – This involves tiny abnormal structures (Lewy bodies) developing inside brain cells, which disrupt the brain’s chemistry and lead to death of brain cells. Symptoms can include difficulties judging distances, hallucinations and varying levels of alertness. It is closely related to Parkinson’s disease and often has some of the same symptoms.

• Frontotemporal dementia – The front and sides of the brain are damaged over time when clumps of abnormal proteins form inside nerve cells, causing them to die. Changes in personality and behaviour may be the first signs of a problem.

What are the symptoms of dementia?

The symptoms someone with dementia experiences will depend on the parts of the brain that are damaged and the disease that is causing it. Everyone is different and will have slightly different experiences, but some of the symptoms will include cognitive changes to aspects like: • Day-to-day memory, with difficulty remembering recent events • Concentrating, planning or organising, with difficulties making decisions, solving problems or carrying out a sequence of tasks such as cooking a meal • Language, with difficulties following a conversation or finding the right words • Visuospatial skills, with problems judging distances (for example, on stairs) and seeing objects in 3D • Orientation, with losing track of the day or date, or becoming confused about where they are.

Alongside cognitive symptoms, a person will often have changes in their mood, such as becoming frustrated or irritable, withdrawn, anxious, easily upset or abnormally sad.

In some forms of dementia, a person may experience visual hallucinations (seeing things that aren’t there) or delusions (believing things that aren’t true).

As dementia progresses, sufferers may develop more unusual behaviours such as repetitive questioning, pacing, restlessness or agitation. In the later stages of dementia it is common to have more physical symptoms such as muscle weakness, weight loss, changes in sleep patterns and appetite, and incontinence. around Yateley 2016 September 5

Who gets dementia?

The Alzheimer’s Society report that there were predicted to be around 850,000 people in the UK with dementia in 2015. It mainly affects people over the age of 65, with the likelihood of developing dementia increasing with age. Both men and women are affected. However, it can also affect younger people. There are more than 40,000 people in the UK with early onset dementia.

In a very small number of people, certain types of dementia can be inherited.

This usually develops before the age of 65. A larger number of people will inherit a combination of genes that increases (or decreases) their risk of developing dementia in a less direct way.

What happens if I think I might have dementia?

If you are concerned that your memory is getting worse, or notice any other symptoms, your first port of call should be your GP. It is really important to get a proper assessment from a trained medical professional, as a lot of these symptoms

may also be caused by a treatable condition such as depression or an infection.

If your GP suspects you have dementia, you will usually be referred to a specialist doctor like a psychiatrist (a mental health specialist), a geriatrician (who specialises in the physical health of older people) or a neurologist (who focuses on diseases of the nervous system). There is no single test for dementia, so a diagnosis will be based on a number of things: • • • •

A doctor will take your history to find out how your problems developed and how they are affecting your daily life Cognitive tests will be carried out to test your memory, thinking etc Some physical tests, such as blood tests, will be carried out to exclude other possible problems A scan of your brain may be done to help make a diagnosis.

How is dementia treated?

Generally dementia cannot be cured, but research continues into developing drugs, vaccines and other medical treatments. There are a range of therapies and activities, such as counseling, cognitive behaviour therapy, cognitive rehabilitation and reminiscence and life story work that can help someone to live well with dementia, and your GP should be able to advise you on these.

There are drugs that may help improve symptoms or, in some cases, may stop them progressing for a while. Medications such as Donepezil, Galantamine and Memantine are often prescribed to people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. For people with vascular dementia, drugs will be focused on treating underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or heart problems. There are also a wide range of medications to help specific symptoms such as depression, anxiety and sleeping problems. around Yateley 2016 September 7

My experiences of dementia

When we first suspected that my Gran had dementia, I naively thought she would just be a bit forgetful. I had never really encountered dementia personally before that point and in retrospect, had very little understanding of it. For the first couple of years, my Gran stayed in her own home about 15 minutes away from us. We often received phone calls at all hours from her, where she would come across as quite confused and not able to find her words. As time progressed, the phone calls increased and my Mum was spending more and more time driving over to my Gran’s. Although she had carers visiting three times a day, she needed more help. Meals would be left in front of her, but she would either fall asleep or just not understand that she needed to eat.

We also began to receive phone calls from the emergency services and the manager of her flats, informing us that my Gran had fallen, or had been found wandering the streets in the middle of the night, completely confused and scared.

At that point we knew something needed to change. My Gran was definite about the fact she did not want to go into a care home, so we decided to move her in with us. My Mum became her main carer. Although it was lovely to have her so close and a part of our family, it wasn’t easy. Over the next few years her condition gradually deteriorated. Often it was difficult for us to see how unwell she had become because we spent so much time with her that it became the norm. But to see her disappearing before our eyes was heartbreaking. She went from being a happy, bubbly, cuddly Granny to a frail, scared shell of her former self. She would become aggressive and say awful things about my Mum, which was obviously incredibly upsetting and completely out of character. She went from having a healthy appetite to barely eating or drinking anything, and was painfully thin during her final months. Her mobility decreased and eventually she needed to be hoisted and moved by carers.

Her dementia had a massive impact on the whole family, but especially affected my Mum (my Gran’s daughter). Our whole lives revolved around taking care of my Gran. She couldn’t be left alone, so someone always had to be around. And because 8 around Yateley September 2016

her sleep was so disturbed, my parents would often be up at all hours trying to keep her safe and settled. Everyone was exhausted, both physically and emotionally from watching someone we loved dearly change so much. We did everything we could to keep her comfortable and out of pain, but it was obvious she was still suffering no matter how much the doctors and everyone else tried. My Gran very sadly passed away in November last year. This also had a huge impact on our family. Our lives no longer revolved around taking care of her any more and it is taking a long time to come to terms with that. As difficult as the last few years have been, we feel comforted knowing we gave my Gran everything we could to help her feel safe and loved, and try to remember the good times we had with her.

Tips for taking care of yourself as a carer/ where you can get support

It can be difficult to know where to look for support for yourself when you spend all your waking hours looking after someone else, but you can do much more for your loved one if you aren’t running on empty.

Your first port of call should be your GP and your loved ones doctors. They need to have you registered as a carer so they know how to support you. You will be eligible for things like a flu jab, to try and maintain your health, but also for emotional support and understanding that you may need urgent home appointments and phone calls.

They will also be able to point you in the right direction for any further support, such as Social Services, benefits such as Carer’s Allowance, charities and so on. It may feel scary getting all these agencies involved and you may feel embarrassed asking for help, but that’s what they’re there for. It’s much easier to support someone who is unwell if you are supported too.

Unfortunately, I can’t possibly list all the charities out there that can offer support to carers for different illnesses, but a quick Google should bring up lots of results. If you are caring for someone with dementia, the Alzheimer’s Society (https://www. alzheimers.org.uk) is a fantastic resource for information and support. You may be entitled to respite care, both from Social Services but also from other related charities. The Princess Royal Trust for Carers (http://www.carercentre.com) offered my Mum so much help in the form of support for her, respite care and financial advice. The Hampshire Dementia Advisor Service, which is provided by the Alzheimer’s Society and Andover Mind, is also a brilliant resource for local dementia carers. I would also reiterate talking to your GP/your loved ones medical team, as they will have knowledge of more local sources of support that you can be referred to. Please don’t struggle alone – there is help out there.

Hilfield Pond restoration officially open Hilfield Pond had silted up since last cleared out in the 1990s. It was adopted as “an historic pond” within the Cricket Hill Conservation Area in 1999 and termed as “Scaters Pond” in Hart’s Cricket Hill Conservation Area Appraisal in 2011. In September 2014 £45 000 was allocated from §106 funds, to reinstate the pond as part of the flood defences, when winter rain swells the Pottle Stream, draining the common through a series of pools down the east curtain of Cricket Hill Lane. The civil engineering work was carried out by WM Longreach and Johns Associates, planting by Hart Conservation.

LOCAL BUSINESS FEATURE

Yateley Networking is an initiative for Blackwater and Yateley businesses to meet up for mutual benefit. It was set up in 2014 by a new business, Tara and Karen of Abstract Print and Design.

They have two types of meetings, monthly morning and quarterly evening, held at La Galleria and hosted by Yateley Industries.

The monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month from 7 until 9am, so that it doesn’t impinge on the working day. There is usually a guest speaker and each member gets a 60-second chance to introduce their business or expertise.

There’s no need to book, just turn up and pay £5 at the door. Refreshments are provided.

YELAbus Yateley Elderley and Less Abled Bus

Yelabus is Yateley’s very own community transport organisation. Groups can subscribe to the service for just £10 per year. Any group basd in the Yateley area, can subscribe and hire the service, whether you are able-bodied or disabled.

The minibuses have 15 seats, but some seats can be removed to fit up to 4 fixed wheelchairs. The drivers are a mixture of volunteer and paid drivers, all MiDAS and DBS accredited. Hirers can use their own drivers, but they must also be similarly qualified.

Hirers must provide a named person who is in charge of the journey.

Charges are £15 per take-out plus running costs of £1.10 per mile. The buses are based at Hedgecroft, Bracken Lane, so all mileage is calculated from there. If a Yelabus driver is used, an additional charge of £1.10 per mile is made between 50 and 100 miles, to cover this cost. The hirers are also liable for any parking fees incurred.

The Yelabus Association is a charity (No 1153996), which is funded by volunteer fundraising, local authorities, annual subscriptions and charges to user groups.

Pokémon Lure Party

The second successful Lure Party for our younger residents during the school holidays, following the previous in July. The weather brought out a large number of families enjoying the lime tree shade. Snacks and drinks were offered for the under 12s plus a drawing competition for depicting the young artists’ favourite Pokémon character. attracting a dozen entries, now on display in the Council offices.

The outstanding ones came from two talented girls, Scarlet and Neve, while 4-year-old Eddie designed his very own character.

Yateley Town Council’s Clerk, Jane Biscombe, is determined to follow this up at half-term, as the Pokémon craze shows no sign of shutting down.

Cricket Hill sarsen ...

The Witch’s Stone

This sarsen, by the Old Cricketers, was once hidden between bushes.

Folklore states that this stone guards Yateley from invaders and to remove it will bring a gigantic fire from the heath to the village and all would become as ash. Another local story says a roma, desperate for food and drink one day, was kindly helped by a Thatcher. In return the roma placed the stone there with a blood oath to protect the village from evil, swearing that dark forces will never enter the village while the stone sits in its place.

Sarsen stones are silicified sandstone, the post-glacial remains of a cap of silcrete (sand and silica cement) formed between 24 and 3 million years ago, broken up by a series of ice ages, carried by glaciers and deposited across central southern England. The word “sarsen” comes from Wiltshire dialect for “Saracen Stone”, meaning anything non-Christian. Henges were built from these stones. It is not a good building stone, but was revered by early settlers because they are unassociated with bedrock and look placed for some spiritual purpose. They can often be seen in ancient churchyards, as newly-converted Saxons and Danes “hedged their bets” and many legends are linked with them. St Peter’s Church has a pair of sarsen stones built into the foundations of the porch, just visible above ground. The porch was built in the 1450s, the sarsens possibly included them in the fabric to keep evil forces from crossing the threshold.

Yateley ’s bell tragedy There is a story of a young boy who went to find his father who was ringing the church bells in the church tower. He opened the door and went inside and, as he did so, the door slammed on him and locked him inside. He tried to ring the bells but couldn’t ring them, so 26 around Yateley September 2016

he struggled to climb up to reach the bells but tragedy struck and he ended up hanging himself. Then a few hours later the father and bell ringers arrived from the pub next door to find him hanging up in the rafters. It has been said that a ghost of a little boy has been seen entering and exiting the tower after bell practice.

There is no hint of date to this story, so it could have happened at any time from when the bell tower was constructed about 1450.

The burial registers start in 1636, but there is no mention of a small boy hanged between then and the 1970s, and I am sure it would have been mentioned. The oldest of the bells is either the”Fifth”, inscribed in Latin with a dedication to St Catherine of Alexandria but no date, or the “Sixth” dated 1577. The Churchwardens’ Accounts start in 1658, when Richard Pitt rented the Dog & Partridge for £1 10 shillings a year, so the only pub in the villlage dates from at least then. Neither Rev Stookes (1905) or William Burrows Tice (c1933) mentioned the incident.

Mad King George and the Miller’s clothes

Many years ago King George III was hunting in Windsor Forest near Sandhurst when a massive storm was sent by Herne the Hunter, upset that the king hadn’t performed the offering ceremony before hunting of an oak branch to his tree. The king, racing to find shelter, crossed the rising ford to the village of Yateley and found by the river the miller’s cottage. His aids knocked and went in and asked to shelter from the storm. As they stood there the king asked for a change of clothing. The miller, not recognising the king, laughed and refused, An hour later, as the king and his aides were gathered by the roaring open fire, the miller’s wife arrived with food and shopping and instantly recognised the king. She grabbed the miller’s largestsized clothes and offered them to the king, who gratefully changed next door. After the storm, the king left in the miller’s clothing and, a few days later, the king had the clothes sent back with 5 gold guineas.

Herne the Hunter, who haunts Windsor Forest, appears in William Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor”. The first printed play was spelled “Horne”, so may refer to Richard Horne, hanged from Herne’s Oak tree by Henry VIII for poaching. Edward VII replanted the oak, felled in 1796. George III was our longest reigning king, so this incident could have been anytime between 1760 and 1820. Apparently images and references to royal hunting parties were common throughout his reign. The pen and ink drawing with watercolour, by the Regency cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827), of King George III returning to Windsor through Eton c1800 as part of a hunting party, so the story could be true! around Yateley 2016 September 27

Where it all started…

Tara decided to start up her own graphic design and print management business in May 2014, after leaving her job as a Graphic Designer for nearly three years following college. She had grown in confidence during this employment but the main reason for making this decision was due to a sleep disorder, Idiopathic Hypersomnia.

This is a medical disorder that affected Tara when driving. Her commute to her job was about an Tara – Owner/Graphic Designer hour each way and she identified that when she got about 20 minutes into her journey that she would then struggle to stay awake and found herself falling asleep at the wheel. At this point she had her driving licence suspended and was sent to a sleep clinic which gave this diagnosis after numerous tests. Her consultant recommended that, to give her a better quality of life, she found employment closer to home; as this journey was hindering her and was something that could be relatively easily eliminated. As well as this, she was prescribed regular medication to help her deal with life’s daily activities as well as anyone else would. To date there is no cure for this disorder but with the medication she has and her licence back she is carrying on life as normal. So from this she took the decision to leave her job and met with the Job Centre, which 28 around Yateley September 2016

was able to get her onto the NEA scheme which gives people the support, mentoring, training and information to help them set up a business, along with a small amount of funding to enable them to live whilst setting up.

With this scheme and the help and support of Karen, her mum, they carried out all the ground work, networking, meeting suppliers and preparing the business plan from the January ready to launch in May. Karen continued to hold down her job of 21 years, at Yateley Karen – Assistant Manager Industries, alongside this to support Tara with the administration side of the business. Come the autumn of 2014 the business had started to take off and a decision needed to be made, Tara required someone full time on the administration side of the business.

Karen made the decision to leave her job and come into the business with Tara.

Karen’s job at Yateley Industries was to manage the programme which provided vulnerable and disabled adults with the training and work ethic to give them the opportunity to progress into mainstream employment. Due to her connections there was a young lady on the programme who she felt Abstract could offer a work experience placement to help her gain her confidence in a subject she had previously studied in. Dani attended Abstract for about a year, assisting Dani – Social Media & Marketing Assistant

Becky – Graphic Designer

Abstract with several websites, social media and marketing campaigns. Unfortunately, when this period came to an end there was no part- or fulltime vacancy for Dani, as this was only a small part of the business but, due to Abstract’s connections through networking, they were able to introduce her to Planet Wide City. This is a company that creates mobile apps and websites. Dani attended work experience with them for the 13 weeks around Yateley 2016 September 29

from January this year and was successful in securing a part-time job offer at the completion of this frial. Dani has now progressed from Yateley Industries and works three days per week at Planet Wide City and one day per week with Abstract.

At the one-year point of the business Abstract had the opportunity of offering a graphic design university student, Becky, some work experience. Becky worked throughout the summer with Abstract. She had to complete her third year at university, during which Abstract offered her a part-time position. Becky has since completed university with a BA Honours Graphic Communication Degree and will be taking a full time position as of September this year.

Yateley United 3-5 AFC Cubo

First League match of the season 13 August 2016 Yateley attacked from the kick off, heading towards the lakes, winning a free kick on the left. Jack Howard took the kick but the stiff crosswind took the effort beyond the far post. Cubo’s No 10 won a corner on the left, which was cleared at the near post for a second corner, this time headed just wide.

Ben’s first shot from the left was saved by the Cubo keeper, but on 4 minutes Sam Munden passed to Howard who chipped to Nathan Connelly on the right, firing his shot right-footed across the keeper and in off the far post, 1-0.

Cubo came back with their 10 charging at the home defence but Evo made a great tackle. On 8 minutes their 11 was clear on goal, but scuffed his shot into Shaun Thomas’s hands.

The 13th minute was unlucky for Cubo, a loose backpass was pounced on by Connolly and he slotted away his second for a 2-0 lead.

Cubo lofted a corner kick from the left and Thomas saved well under his feet. Then Cubo shot wide.

On 28 minutes, it looked like Ben was away on goal and the advancing keeper appeared to handle outside the area, but not spotted by the Ref. Connolly took the game to Cubo again and fired a shot over the bar.

Cubo shot wide of the mark on 38 minutes, and five minutes later, Howard shot from the left, saved by the keeper. Just before the end of the half, Cubo’s 8 shot straight at Thomas. Half-time 2-0 to Yateley United.

Cubo showed they meant business straight from the restart. Travis held them up with a decent tackle but their 9 hit the crossbar, then they shot wide before a left foot shot was stopped by Thomas in goal.

On 50 minutes a foul on Ben gave Howard a chance to extend Yateley’s lead, firing a free kick over the bar.

Cubo pulled a goal back on 52 minutes with the No 11 firing in from the left, 2-1.

A shot by Munden was saved, but on the hour mark a Cubo shot from the left equalised 2-2. Five minutes later and Cubo were ahead 2-3. It could have been 2-4 down if Thomas hadn’t saved well from 9, who screwed his follow-up wide. On 74 minutes, a Cubo cross from the right beat Thomas and hit the angle of far post and crossbar. Cubo pressure pinned Yateley into their own half during this period of visitor dominence, No 11’s shot saved, 10 shot wide before, on 78 minutes, 11 shot into the bottom left hand corner for 2-4. Three minutes later and the Cubo 3 shot from distance and scored in off the lefthand post, to make the game safe 2-5 on 71 minutes. A further attack won a corner from the left, Thomas fisting the ball clear.

Ben was clear and pulled down in the box for a penalty. Connolly sent the keeper the wrong way as he stroked the ball into the right side of the net for 3-5 on 87 minutes.

A free kick on the edge was wasted. Into injury time Evo had a final shot saved.

Oysters Fish’n’Chip Takeaway Frogmore and Darby Green’s latest takeaway was officially opened by the Yateley Deputy Town Mayor on 30 August 2016. The Fish and Chip shop in Rosemary Lane, “Oysters”, run by Gav and Sonya Singh. This is their second takeaway, the original Oysters established over 20 years ago in Lightwater and has become a local institution.

The Lightwater shop scooped the Best Chips in Surrey award last year.

Among the guests invited to the grand opening were John Winterton, the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Philip Wallington, in his second year as Sandhurst Town Council Mayor, Ray Edwards MBE of Limbcare (currently the Sandhurst Mayor’s Charity), BLK Design & Build and JWP Plumbing (who made the necessary alterations and installations to the shop). Naturally, the Singh’s young girls held up the ribbon for the opening.

Oysters make their own batter, which seals the fish so thoroughly that it steams in its own moisture rather than actually fried by the palm oil used in the deep fryers.

The cooked fish is allowed time to drain before eating, so the fish is at its best and as healthy eating as fish and chips can be. Certainly the sample I tried at the opening had the thinnest coating of crispy batter, the fish inside hot, succulent and very tasty.

Gav Singh has taken a scientific approach to his business, experimenting with many varieties to bring the best of British potatoes for frying to his takeaway.

The shop is fitted with the latest frying cookers and extraction equipment, the palm oil used is heated to a higher temperature than normal vegetable oils so they are able to handle a quick turnaround of orders, and therefore able to meet bulk orders from social functions, quiz nights, race nights, etc.

At the St Barnabas Summer Fayre last month, they supplied 60 meals, all in insulated paper bags, which help keep the food warmer than the more commonly used cardboard boxes, as well as being easier to dispose of responsibly.

During the event a collection was made on behalf of Limbcare (Charity No 1136172), who provide help and support to amputees and the limb-impaired. Sandhurst Town Council are hosting a talk by quad amputee Ray Edwards, entitled “An Evening with Limbcare”, a serious subject but delivered with humour, as he explains what the charity sets out to achieve, on 24 September at 7pm, tickets £10 each which will go towards the Mayor’s Charity. around Yateley 2016 September 39

I was hoping to take some wildlife photos, but it was great to see the grey heron Ardea cinerea.

He was hidden behind reeds but eventually I got a couple of shots. Even as late as 1898 these birds were hunted for meat. It was recorded in 1465, that 400 herons were roasted for the Archbishop of York’s appointment feast.

As you can imagine there were plenty of insects to see, including the Emerald damselfly Lestes sponsa and the Banded Demoiselle (male) Calopteryx splendens.

Another bird bonus was seeing the moorhen chick Gallinula chloropus in the dappled shade.

The waterfall from a stream flowing over the east bank was a pleasant surprise, but the “wibbly-wobbly� bridge crossing from the west

bank onto the east side, was a little disconcerning. Take care crossing the A30, it is a busy road, I then carried on until reaching the point in Shepherds Meadow covered in the March walk, then back the way we came.

Yateley Networking raises ÂŁ1000 for Yateley Industries

Before Tara Lowe and Karen Palmer launched their Print and Design business, “Abstract Print and Design� in May 2014, they attended many Networking groups in the region.

However, they found that there were no groups in the immediate Blackwater or Yateley area. They approached businesses in Yateley that they knew about, to both introduce Abstract and float the idea of organising a Networking Group locally. The majority approached felt that if a group was set up they would attend. Responses were encouraging and positive that a group would be beneficial to local business.

They researched the days and times when other groups took place, taking a poll of local businesses to ascertain preferences. The majority preferred to attend an early morning event, without disrupting their working day, so Yateley Networking was set up on the first Wednesday of each month from 7am to 9am.

For 21 years Karen had worked for Yateley Industries, Mill Lane, Yateley GU46 7TF, a charity that provides employment and training for people with disabilities. Yateley Industries is a supported factory which offers packaging and assembly work, catering, gardening and maintenance and sales and administration training. Yateley Industries can offer those people wishing to gain meaningful employment the opportunity to receive the support they require before entering mainstream employment, to build on their work ethic, skills, or confidence to do so.

This is a Government Funded programme to assist people with disabilities to gain a work ethic and skills with the aim to progress into mainstream employment.

This programme ties in nicely with local business, so Tara and Karen decided to hold Yateley Networking there, adding support to this charity by donating the money raised from the networking events after any costs were covered.

Yateley Networking has been running now for nearly two years, following an October 2014 launch, promoting businesses in the local area and enabling them to network, build relationships and refer each other’s services locally, as well as promoting Yateley Industries, informing the local community of what they do and how the community and local businesses may be able to support this charity.

Yateley Networking have raised ÂŁ1000 to date, which the Yateley Town Mayor, Gerry Crisp, in company with some of the local business owners at the August event, presented the cheque to Yateley Industries, to assist them with the residential building extension that is currently taking place. This necessary work is to update the current housing that has been in place for 75 plus years and add a second storey to the existing bungalows, giving the opportunities for other vulnerable and disabled adults within the local area to obtain supported accommodation. around Yateley 2016 September 51

Yateley Past People 200& 300 YEARS AGO

This new history of Yateley series of articles is a look back into the past of ordinary people who were born (or more exactly baptised in this month in centuries past and their historical context. I hope you find it interesting. The Parish Records of St Peter’s are a superb online source published by The Yateley Society which we can use. The baptism record ends about 1904, so 100 years ago is not available, and they only go back to 1636, so 1616 is out of the question. But we do have September 1716 and 1816 to look at. Now, who do we have?

1716 September Mary Collier was baptised on 7 September 1716, the only baptism that month in Yateley. Her father was Joseph Collier (c1690–14 July 1731). He was possibly the son of James Colliar, a Yateley resident in the late 1600s, with a son, Joseph Colliar, baptised 2 February 1677/8. A second Joseph Collyer, son of James Collyer, was baptised on 18 February 1699/1700, but this Joseph would have only been 12 at the time of Mary’s father’s wedding. Joseph Collier married Elizabeth Pithers at Yateley on Thursday 6 October 1712.

There are several candidates for Mary’s mother Elizabeth Pithers. There was an Elizabeth Pither baptised at Swallowfield on 22 December 1695, daughter of Thomas Pither and Sarah, and in Arborfield on 6 December 1696 “Elizabeth Pither was christened, daughter of Thomas Pither”. Either candidate would be young, only 17 or 16, to be married, although at this time it was legal to be married at 12.

The Colliers had only two children, as well as Mary in 1716, there was an elder sister, Elizabeth Collier, who was baptised 20 February 1713/14.

Elizabeth Collier married Thomas Bunch on Wednesday 27 April 1735, when she was 22. They married by licence, obtained from the Dean of Salisbury in April 1735. They had two girls, but both died in infancy: Mary Bunch was baptised 7 January 1735/6 and buried 20 March 1735/6, and Anne Bunch christened 6 October 1737 and buried 7 April 1738, when about six months old. Tragically, their mother Elizabeth Bunch nee Collier was buried on 23 June 1738, age just 25. Again, Thomas obtained a licence from the Dean of Salisbury on 7 June 1739 and remarried on 11 June 1739 in Yateley to Sarah Dernford, with their first child Thomas Bunch junior baptised on 11 December 1740. Thomas Bunch senior was buried in Yateley on 1 May 1769, probably aged in his late 50s.

Mary Collier (born 1716) was only 15 when her father Joseph died, buried in Yateley on 14 July 1731, age 54. Mary married a Stephen Williamshurst in Yateley on 3 June 1737, when Mary Collier was 20. However, the couple appear to have left 60 around Yateley September 2016

the village to move to Stephen’s parish, as no record of themselves or any children are shown in our parish registers. The only mention I have been able to find of Stephen Williamshurst is a tax list of 1761 (some 24 years later), when he is recorded paying 8 shillings tax on a property in Black Dogg Alley in the Middlesex parish of St Botolph Without Aldgate.

The only mention we have of Mrs Mary Williamshurst after her marriage, is the will of her uncle John Pither, who died in Yateley in 1744: “In the Name of God Amen I John Pither of Yateley in the County of Southton Yeoman, being weak in Body but of sound and perfect Mind and Memory blessed

by God do this nineteenth Day of March in the year of our Lord 1743[1744 in the modern calendar] make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form followeth Vist principally and first of all I commend my Soul into the hands of God that gave it and my Body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian Like and Decent manner at the discretion of my Executrix herinafter named and as for Such Worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to Bless me with all I Give and bequeath unto my Brother Richard Pither and my Brother James Pither and my Sister Jane Handkerson, my Sister Elizabeth Collyer the full and Just Sum of Twenty pounds a piece to be paid within one year after my Decease by my Executrix hereinafter named [Item] I Give and bequeath to my kinswoman Mary Williamshurst and my kinswomen Jane Morter and my kinswoman Handkerson ~ each and everyone of them the full and Just of Ten pounds to be paid within one year after the Decease of Ann my Wife [item] I Give and bequeath unto my Brother Richard’s four daughters the full and just sum of Five pounds a piece to be paid them within one year after the Decease of Ann Pither my Wife [item] I Give and bequeath unto Ann Pither my Wife, the wife of my kinsman John Pither and her four Children to Sum of Forty Shillings a piece to be likewise paid them within one year after the Decease of Ann Pither my Wife [item] I Give and bequeath unto my loving Wife Ann Pither the full and just sum of One hundred pounds to be at her own disposall and all the Rest of my Goods and Chattels whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my loving Wife Ann Pither for and during the Term of her naturall life provided she makes no wast or Embosalmment of the same and from and after the decease of my said Wife I Give the above said left and residue unto my Brother James Pither and my kinsman Joseph Pither son of my Brother Richard Pither to be equally divided between them provided they pay out of the same the Legacies as above mentioned within one year after the Decease of my Wife And I do hereby make nominate Constitute and appoint my loving Wife Ann Pither my only and Sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament revoking and disannulling all other Wills or bequeaths heretobefore made by me and do Ratify and confirm this and only this to be my last around Yateley 2016 September 61

Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the day and year above written The marke of John Pither signed sealed and published pronounced and declared by the said John Pither to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of us James Clarke ~ John Clarke ~ Thomas hammond ~ “Probatum This Will was proved at London on the eleventh Day of May in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred and Forty Four before the Worshipful William Straham Doctor of Laws and surrogate of the Right Worshipfull John Betsworth also Master Keeper of Company of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Ann Pither widow the relative and Sole Executrix named in the said Will to whom Administration was Granted of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased she having been first sworn by commission duly to administer the same. John Pither, Yeoman of Yateley, Hants. [buried 13 April 1744]” When Ann Pither died a couple of years later (buried 31 August 1746 in Yateley), her Will, written five weeks after her husband was buried, reiterated John’s bequests by reference to his will, making other bequests to her side of the family, notably her nephew Thomas Hammond, one of the witnesses to John Pither’s Will.

1816 September There were three baptisms in St Peter’s during September 1816, Sarah Reynolds, William Sams, and George Gregory.

Sarah Reynolds was baptised at St Peter’s on 15 September 1816, the daughter of Benjamin Reynolds and his wife Sarah. Benjamin’s occupation is given as Post Boy, living in Hawley. The village of Hawley didn’t become a separate parish distinct from Yateley until 1844.

Sarah was the Reynolds’ third-born of six children. Mary Ann Reynolds was born 1808, Thomas Reynolds followed in 1815, then Sarah 1816, before William Reynolds 1818, Jane Reynolds 1821 and Henry Reynolds 1823, all in Yateley.

Sarah’s parents were married in Yateley on Thursday 25 August 1808, when Benjamin Reynolds wed Sarah Mears. The wedding was possibly of the “shotgun wedding” type, as Sarah gave birth to their first child just three months later. Prior to becoming a Post Boy, Benjamin was described as a servant. Sarah Mears is possibly the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Mears baptised 28 May 1787 in Kingsclere.

This birth date would tie in with her burial entry on 20 May 1836, as her age is given as 49, when she died of “suden death”.

Sarah’s father Benjamin Reynolds may have returned to being a servant after his wife died and he may have been part of a huge household of servants in Piccadilly in the 1841 census, listed as age 50, an “MS” (male servant) and born outside the county of Middlesex.

The Reynolds’ family disappear from Hawley and Yateley before the 1841 census.

Mary Ann is not noted after her 1808 baptism, Thomas disappears after his 1815 christening. William Reynolds may have been a coachman at the Adelaide Hotel in New Windsor in 1841. Jane Reynolds disappears after 1821 and Henry Reynolds appears briefly as a shop assistant in Shirley, Hampshire in 1841, but disappears after that. Sarah Reynolds doesn’t make a reappearance following her 1816 baptism.

Sarah’s father Benjamin was the son of John Reynolds (1745-1812) and Sarah Ham, who married 21 July 1771 in Yateley. Sarah’s grandfather John Reynolds had moved to Frimley but was buried in Yateley on 7 October 1812, age 67. Benjamin was one of nine siblings, including another Benjamin (1783-1784). John Reynolds was born around 1745, and possibly the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Reynolds, who first appear in Yateley at the christening of their daughter Rebekah on 5 November 1747. Therefore there were four generations of Reynolds living in Yateley between 1747 and 1821.

William Sams was baptised at St Peter’s on 15 September 1816, the son of William Sams and Anne Goddard.

William was the Sams’ third child, following John Sams (1811-1854), James Sams (1813), and younger siblings, George Sams (1819-1877), Samuel Sams (1822-1891), Joseph Sams (1826-1869), Mary Ann Sams (1828-1835), Thomas Sams (1831-1876) and Mary Anne Sams (1839).

William Sams married Jane Russell in Easthampstead District in the December Quarter 1838 (ref vol 6 page 297). It is unclear how they met, possibly Jane was

working as a female servant, as William was noted to be working as a servant in his early years.

Jane Russell’s baptism was recorded in the Non Conformist Registers: “No 11.

Jane, Daughter of Reuben and Mary Russell of the Parish of Arreton [West Cowes, Isle of Wight], was born June 5, 1815 and baptised July 9th 1815.”

Jane’s father Reuben, was a yeoman farmer of 11 acres on the Isle of Wight, baptised in Chale in 1780 and married Mary Tutton in 1798.

William and Jane may have moved to Farnham, Surrey, shortly after their marriage, where their daughter Mary Ann Sams’ birth was registered in 1839, although in later census entries Mary Ann records she was born in Blackwater. In fact the 1841 census clearly records the family are back in Blackwater: 1841 Blackwater William Sams 25 ms y Jane do 25 y Mary do 1 y “MS” means he was a male servant.

William and Jane’s second child William George Sams was also registered in Farnham in 1846, and again, in later census records he insists that he was born in Blackwater. Perhaps Jane preferred to spend her confinement with a relative in Farnham, or perhaps Blackwater was simply covered by the Farnham Register Office in those early years of the national birth, marriage and death registers?

In 1851, William Sams was working as a licenced victualler in Finsbury, London: 1851 Finsbury Liberty of Glass Yard household 219, at 114 Aldersgate St William Sams head mar 34 licensed victualler Hants Yately Jane do wife do 35 Isle of Wight Mary Ann do daur u 10 Hants Blackwater William Geo do son 4 do do Robert Morrison barman 25 Sheffield Yorks Elizabeth Ann Dent Servant 27 Cornhill C of L William was following in the career footsteps of his father, who, in 1843 bought The Greyhound in Darby Green.

The Greyhound was apparently the third public house in Yateley to acquire a full 64 around Yateley September 2016

licence, Thomas Bartlett at The Anchor beat The Greyhound by a year. However there is proof in the Manorial Court books that The Greyhound was an 1830 beerhouse before it gained its full licence in 1860. The first mention of the name of the pub is in 1843, when William Sams “late of Yateley beer retailer” is admitted to “All that brick and thatched messuage or tenement with the outbuildings garden and appurtenances thereto belonging situate at Darby Green in the sd Parish of Yateley now used as a retail Beer House bearing the sound [sic] of the Greyhound and in the occupation of the said William Sams being the premises constituting lot 3 at the aforesaid auction and the same as are delineated in the sd first recited copy of CR as 1 ancient Messuage with the appurtenances thereunto belonging.”

William Sams purchased the beerhouse for £244 at the auction of the estate of Thomas Dash, then in bankruptcy. Dash was an innkeeper of New Windsor who had also owned Darby Green Farm. As William Sams Senior is referred to as “late of Yateley beer seller”, this implies that he had an earlier licensed premises within the parish.

William’s eldest brother John Sams (1811-1854) was also a publican, in 1841 in Brook Street, Holborn.

Brother George Sams (1819-1877) was a carpenter in 1841, but a Holborn-based publican when he married in 1846, then licensed victualler in Clerkenwell in 1851, and in Southwark in 1871, who died in Darby Green and was buried in Yateley on 3 October 1877, age 58.

The next brother Samuel Sams (1822-1891) was “late hotel keeper” in 1851, a retired publican in Sandhurst 1881, a “Gentleman” when administering William’s estate in 1882, and died 30 December 1891 in Sandhurst and buried in St Peter’s on 4 January 1892.

Another brother, Joseph Sams (1826-1869), was landlord of the Hickman’s Folly in Southwark in 1851, and died in Brixton, his will partly adminstered by his architect nephew William Thomas Sams.

The youngest brother, Thomas Sams, was a wine merchant in 1861 when still living in Darby Green with his widowed mother, a retired licensee age 38 in 1871, before he died on 14 April and buried in Yateley on 20 April 1876, age only 45.

John Sams, who died in 1854, left a long will describing his negotiations to purchase a public house from Simonds Brewers of Reading: “This is the last Will and Testament of John Sams of Yateley in the County of Southampton Gentleman Whereas I have lately contracted and agreed with Charles Simonds Esquire and the trustees of his marriage settlement for the purchase of a freehold messuage farms and lands situate in the parish of Sandhurst in the County of Berks containing by estimation ninety eight acres or thereabouts and I around Yateley 2016 September 65

have also contracted and agreed with the sons Charles Simonds and Sarah his wife for the purchase of certain customary or copyhold lands situate in the Parish of Yateley within the manor of Crondall in the County of Southampton containing by estimation thirty seven acres or thereabouts and whereso the purchasers of the once freehold and copyhold lands that have not yet or been completed nor have the same land yet been conveyed surrendered and assured to me.” He left everything to his eldest son John Henry Sams, who was only 15 at the time.

Still in Finsbury in 1861, William Sams is still running another pub, although he is now a widower, his wife Jane dying in 1855 in Camberwell.

He doesn’t appear to have married, may have worked as an architect in Weymouth in 1869, but spending his last 20 years in various lodging house in Middlesex, leaving £450 in his will to his only kin, elder brother John Henry Sams, a Ramsgate publican.

William Sams died 2 October 1868 in Darby Green, death registered in Farnborough: December Quarter Farnborough (Hants) Surrey (ref vol 2a page 67), age 52. He was buried in St Giles, Camberwell (ref it7, p181), presumably next to his late wife Jane. Probate granted “administered by brother Joseph Sams of 92 Highstreet Southward [Southwold?] in the County of Sussex Wine and Spirit Merchant and son George William Sams of Cannon-street-road, Gentleman, Effects under £5000”. However, his brother and his son didn’t complete the administration and on 3 July 1882, administration of “William Sams late of the ‘Roebuck’ Tavern Cannon-street-road St-George’s-in-the-East, Middlesex, died at Darby Green. His estate left unadministered by brother Joseph Sams and son George William Sams, so Samuel Sams of Sandhurst in Berks Gentleman substituted as Residuary Legatee.

William and Jane’s children had different fates. William George Sams (1846-1881) 66 around Yateley September 2016

ran “The Roebuck” after 1868, as George William Sams, but retired to Darby Green by 1881, with wife and child, and died age 36, buried in St Peter’s on 26 October 1881 as George Sams. His sister Mary Ann Sams had an illegitimate child Jessy Jane Sams in Blackwater in 1860, then went to stay at a small farm in Lakenheath Suffolk in the 1861 census, as visitors with the Allsop family. The following year Mary Ann Sams married Francis Horrex, the recently-widowered son-in-law of the Allsops.

They had seven children between 1863 and 1880. Francis died in Lakenheath in 1905, while Mary Ann Horrex nee Sams died there in 1921, age 82.

George Gregory was baptised at St Peter’s Church on 29 September 1816, son of William Gregory and Mary Ridgers, who were married in Yateley on 19 October 1802.

George was the Gregory’s sixth of eight children born between 1803 and 1822.

His father William was a labourer, stated in the 1851 census to have been born in Farnborough around 1774. I have not found his birth entry, so have no further information on him.

George’s mother was Mary Ridgers. She could have been born in Yateley around 1784, possibly baptised 12 April 1784, when 16 out of 18 names have been lost to ravages of time on the parish records. If so, she would have been the daughter of George & Elizabeth Ridgers, who had a further daughter Jane in 1786. This same George Ridgers may well have had an illegitimate son George Grist with Mary Grist of Hawley in 1799.

Alternatively, George Gregory’s mother could be the Mary Ridgers, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Ridgers born 21 October 1785 and baptised 19 November 1785 in Farnborough St Peter. In the 1851 census she states that, like her husband, she was also born in Farnborough. Her older sister Harriot was born in Yateley in 1781 and also married in Yateley (to John Goddard) in 1802.

On balance, I favour the Farnborough family. Her father Thomas Ridgers was a wheelwright, baptised in Farnborough St Peter on 22 June 1760, son of Robert and Mary Ridgers. This Thomas Ridgers took on a wheelwright apprentice, George Draper, on Monday 14 July 1788 in Farnborough. The only Thomas Ridgers and Hannah marriage I can find is that of Thomas Ridger and Hannah Hartell, both of St Marylebone, Middlesex, whose banns were called 23 April, 30 April and 3 May 1780, although the actual marriage certificate the following week has not yet made it online. If Thomas served his apprenticeship as a wheelwright in Middlesex, then he may well have become a journeyman around that time and, with a wage coming in, able to afford to take a wife.

The Ridgers had four children that I know of: 1. Harriot Ridgers (1781-1844), baptised in Yateley on 22 June 1781, and was married as Harriott Ridgers to John Goddard in Yateley on 30 January 1802, their children born in Yateley were John Goddard (1805-1890), Catherine Goddard (1808-53), Hannah Goddard (1810-??), Eleanor Goddard (1813-??), and Jane Goddard 1817-??). Harriett Goddard died 1844.

2. Hannah Ridgers (1783-11 November 1801 (of Hawley)). Buried 11 November 1801, age 18.

3. Mary Ridgers (1785-??), possibly George Gregory’s mother.

4. James Ridgers (1793-1794), baptized in Yateley on 21 April 1793, having been born 11 days earlier in Cove. He was only 18 months old when buried at St Peter’s on 17 October 1794.

After William Gregory and Mary Ridgers married in 1802, the children soon followed, all born in Hawley: 1. William Gregory born 25 December 1803, baptised 22 January 1804, but buried in Yateley 24 July 1810, age 10.

2. Thomas Gregory born 20 August 1806, baptised 28 September 1806. He married Sarah Edmead in Yateley on 29 September 1827. Thomas and Sarah had one child, Mary Gregory, in 1828. In 1841 they were still living next to a brother (Henry) and his parents in Hawley. Thomas was buried in Hawley on 10 September 1845, age 39.

3. James Gregory was born on 6 September 1809, baptised on 1 October 1809.

James Gregory married Sarah Giles in 1829 in Hawley. The James Gregory buried in 1866 is entered as 51 in the Burial Register instead of 56, as there are two other James Gregorys living in the Yateley area at the time. around Yateley 2016 September 69

4. Elizabeth Gregory was baptised on 6 October 1811. An Eliza Gregory married Joseph Cowly in 1831 when Elizabeth would have been 20.

5. Henry Gregory was baptised on 15 May 1814. He married Mary Silvester on 13 September 1834, their first child Henry arriving around 1836. He was a labourer in 1841 and a gamekeeper in 1851, with further children Mary Ann 10, Eliza 3 and Sarah 3 months.

7. Mary Ann Gregory was baptised on 29 March 1819. She married tailor Charles Moren (1811-1846) from Wadhurst, Sussex, on 8 April 1833 in St Peter’s when she was only 14 years old. They had seven children in 12 years: Charles Moren (18341917), William Moren (1837-??), George Moren (1839-??), Henry Harry Moren (1841-1890), Eliza Moren (April 1843-October 1843), Elizabeth Moren (18441845) and Thomas Moren (1846-1852). When widowed in 1846, she moved in with her parents. By 1861, she was living in Hawley Street as a laundress and her widowered father, a son and his family were living with her. She died in Hawley in 1899, age 79.

8. Jane Gregory was baptised on 14 April 1822, but buried on 14 July 1822, age 3 months.

George Gregory married Sarah Giles at St Peter’s on Saturday 29 September 1838. A search for Sarah Giles proved fruitless, as this appears to be a common name (even George’s older brother James married a Sarah Giles nine years earlier, and even her birth has proved elusive). It is possible that Sarah Giles is the daughter of William (1777-c1854) and Frances Searl (1781-c1845) who married on 28 June 1800 in Sandhurst; they were farmers on Yateley Green in 1841 and in 1851 widower William Giles was a lodger with Thomas Bunch (who occupied Tithe field 51a on Yateley Green (where Macrae Road is now).
