Yateley Proud ofYateley Attending Hart Chairman Cllr Gerry Crisp’s Civic Day celebration of the best of Hart District last month, reminds us of what a fantastic area we live in and around Yateley. The two areas visited, Gibraltar Barracks and Blackbushe Airport, can be checked out on page 22. But Cllr Crisp could equally have chosen Yateley Common, or the new facilities at Hampshire Lakes, or Yateley Hall, or Church End Green, etc, etc. We really do live in a great area. On 15 November Hampshire County Council will be considering Blackbushe Airport’s application to deregister the Airport from its current status as Common land. The airport has operated perfectly well for 75 years without taking this drastic step, which would instantly remove the protection of common land laws and turn the airport into a brownfield site ripe for housing.

BRAVING THE SHAVE

On 11 October, the day after he had run a half marathon to raise money for Macmillans Cancer, 21-year-old George Steed braved the shave and had the 13-inch locks he had been cultivating for about three years shorn off for charity. What better venue to do this than at his workplace in Willow Gardens, part of the Hampshire Lakes retirement village run by Anchor Trust? Of course, this attracted a sizeable audience of residents, who cheered on their encouragement and the trusty scissors and shears of the resident hairdressers. A

Daisy Chain CafĂŠ Officially Launched

The Yateley Daisy Chain CafĂŠ, just launched by the Mayor this month, actually started out in the spring of 2017, with volunteers on hand to help dementia sufferers meet up and socialise while enjoying a lunch and an afternoon tea once a week. Held in the Monteagle Hall, next to the Waitrose, where people can take part in games and converse with friends. Familiar objects, games and conversations give a jolt to dementia sufferers so that they trigger old memories and you can see the joy in the faces as things click and come back. Twiddle boards, which knobs and chains and locks on, are another aid, similar to the activity centres that children learn to play on. around Yateley 2017 November 11

WEIR Launch 2nd generation pump

Unless you had been there before, you wouldn’t know that tucked away in the industrial estate in Vigo Lane (the old County Tractors site) is the factory of Weir Minerals Europe Limited, Wilkinson House, Galway Road, Blackbushe Business Park, Yateley GU46 6GE. Weir Minerals are part of an international corporation with manufacturing and assembly facilities in 70 countries. The reason for me being there, in my role as Mayor, was to help them launch a new pump, the second generation of a WGR pump designed to pump sand and gravel. The latest version of this pump, available in a range of sizes, incorporates fully replaceable rubber liners, which bears the brunt of the abrasion from the sand and gravel, as well as greatly reduce the noise factor, and is now fitted with a drain plug, so that where there is danger of frost, the unit can be drained of liquid when the pumping is switched off at night or between shifts. The pump was designed using Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation and this has enabled reduction of turbulance and therefore provides a significantly improved performance over the first generation of this pump. The computer modelling has enabled the tasks of maintenance to be simplified to minimise downtime. One of the several innovations include the introduction of an expanser gland seal as well as having the option of using a low flow packed gland and the unique D gland seal. 12 around Yateley November 2017

The Warman range of pumps, used in a wide range of applications, has a worldwide reputation for reliability and a number of customers were invited to the launch in Yateley. Speaking to some customers during my visit, I was assured that the pumps they already had were great reliable workhorses that rarely needed anything more than basic maintenance and rarely in need of replacement. All thought that the drain plug, especially where used in European winters, was a useful reintroduction which was omitted from the design of the first generation pump. The pumps were lined with a patented form of cured rubber, called Linatex, developed in the 1920s, which comes in the form of rolls of sheets, manufactured in a state-of-the-art factory in Malaysia. The rolls are then stamped into shape, formed into cylinders and glued, or wound in layers to form extremely stable pipes. There was a surprising amount of hand work as well as the mechanical presses, all providing jobs for local people. All in all an enjoyable demonstration of a factory on our doorstep making a world reknown product in its field.

Reducing the Generation Gap

At Willow Gardens, in the retirement village Hampshire Lakes run by the Anchor Trust, they believe that getting old and young people together is beneficial for both. As a grandparent I know very well thsat the presence of young children with their lively enquiring minds, can be a joy, and older people have the time and patience to listen to their enquiries, and come up with some answers. The Chain Gang glittering visit to Hart

All the Districts of Hampshire are required to stage a Civic Day each year, hosted by the Chairman or Mayor of each to put on a demonstration of some of assets that they are most proud of and want to show off to the other districts. Hart Chairman Cllr Gerry Crisp will be well known to many “around Yateley readers, having served as Mayor of Yateley for the past four years. He introduced Hart District as dating from 1974 when the urban and rural districts of Fleet and Hartley Wintney amalgamated. Hart has a population of 93,000 in 37,000 households. Cllr Crisp pointed out that Hart is officially recognised as the least deprived local authority area in the whole country and that for five years Hart retained the title of the best place to live in Halifax Quality of Life Survey and only in the last month another Halifax survey placed Hart as the second most desirable place in England to raise children and fifth overall in the UK. In a Royal Mail survey this year, Yateley was placed second in the most desirable Town in the UK. 22 around Yateley November 2017

Virginia Water in Autumn It is always a pleasure to visit Virginia Water, and the Savile Gardens next door, at any time of the year, but particularly beautiful during the autumn, when the eye is treated to a feast of colours from the range of reds and golds on offer. Although the third week of October was perhaps a wee bit early in the season for some of the trees to start turning yet, the high winds of the previous week had already stripped many of the early turners off the trees. However, there was still much to treat the eye and to repay the effort of bringing and focussing the camera. We opted to do the riverside walk and take in the totem pole on the way around. The walk around the main body of water is about four and half miles around and even at a gentle stroll it can easily be completed in 90 minutes, keeping the parking

costs down to a couple of hours, even allowing a stop for a cup of tea (or hot chocolate) halfway around. The opening scene, looking up the Water from the entrance, the winds were still strong and the scudding clouds threatened showers. We did have a shower, short and sharp, about three-quarters of the way around, but when the sun came out again and the wind dropped, we were persuaded to cool off with a soft ice cream in an oyster. Naturally, another shower flew across while we enjoyed our icy treat, but it only goes to prove the continual incongruities of the British relationship with our weather. So the colours are not quite at their brilliant best yet, but Virginia Water is well worth a visit in the next few weeks or so and I recommend you give it a whirl. 42 around Yateley November 2017

The role of Montehe & Friedelehe marriages

Wedding customs have evolved over the centuries and, I dare say, the present day obsession to go all out with extreme dressy occasions, preceded by stag and hen “nights” that last for longer and held in more distant corners of the globe than the actual honeymoon! No, weddings in rural villages like Yateley would have been much simpler affairs in years gone by. In medieval times, the ceremony was a simple “I do” by the partners of the marriage, and was rarely performed in church. If Christians wanted a marriage with the blessing of the church, the nearest they were usually allowed to hold the declaration of their pledges was outside the church door, which is why so many elaborate church porches were built in the 11th and 12th centuries. The transitive verb “wed” meant to pledge, so a wedding was when the pledge was announced to the village so that all would know that the couple were married by mutual consent. If a couple announced their intention to marry, by becoming engaged, should the couple have sex before marriage, then that act of consumation would be considered sufficient for them to be termed man and wife. Statutes from 1217 warn that no man should “place a ring of reeds or another material, vile or precious, on a young woman’s hand in jest, so that he might more easily fornicate with them, lest, while he thinks himself joking, he pledge himself to the burdens of matrimony.” Many cases before courts hinged on the dispute or confusion between couples whether they were actually married or not. A number of marriages were annulled because of consanguinity, close relationship or incest. In Medieval times the rules were that up to 6th cousins couldn’t marry, but in 1215 this was reduced to 3rd cousins. Even Godparents were not allowed to marry as the Church considered them to be spiritually related. The Middle English word bridale is derived from Old English brÿdealu, from brÿd or brud meaning to cook or brew, the definition then of a housewife, and ealu meaning ale. Old English brÿdguma meaning wife’s man, evolved into bridegroom. Marriage was such a simple affair in the Middle to Late Middle Ages because there was no established litany, nor was there any scrip or 44 around Yateley November 2017

written contract. Couples didn’t need the permission of their families to marry, nor did they have to bother with a priest to conduct the ceremony as there was no ceremony! There was no age restriction either, as the general rule of thumb was if you reached puberty you were ready to marry, for girls it was 12 and boys 14. In fact the age wasn’t restricted in England until the Marriage Act of 1754, while Scotland didn’t change their law until much later which is why marriages by minors under 21 were popularly conducted in Gretna Green, just across the border. In fact, the main problem was the difficulty in remembering if one or both the couple were already married to anyone else, hence the calling of the banns for three weeks before the marriage took place. It was accepted under the feudal system that common folk, slaves or serfs would first seek the approval of their lord. Of course, families were naturally heavily involved in the marriage process and arranged marriages would be common for the benefit of both families. Although written contracts were not necessary, there would be pre-nup agreements which covered widowhood, with provision to protect the life of the widow and any children still at home would be settled. Marriages outside of one’s class would be rare too, and certainly frowned on by both sides of the family. When the Normans invaded Britain in 1066, they largely left the old Saxon laws as they were, many weren’t written down but made perfect sense, such as stealing, murder, etc were already covered. This is where Common Law is still effective today. One of the few changes that William I made was to abolish the death penalty, as he thought it was too drastic a measure, so most offences were settled by fines. Friedelehe was the term used for a form of marriage that existed among the Saxon and Germanic tribes. The word literally means “lover marriage” and was a means of getting around the law of monogamy. A man could take a second wife for any reason, like incompatibility, or wife No 1 couldn’t bear children. This differed from a first marriage (or Muntehe) by a number of conditions: the husband did not become the legal guardian of the woman, both must agree to marry, the woman had the same right as the man to ask for a divorce, usually the couples were from different classes and couldn’t normally marry, the children were under the control of the mother, but children enjoyed full inheritance rights as legal children of the father, the marriage legal as soon as consumated and the bride might have a morgengabe instead of a dowry, a Friedelehe could be converted into a Muntehe if the husband paid his wife a bridewealth. The best-known Friedelehe child is Charlemagne who was the first Holy Roman Emperor. His parents had a common law marriage until Charlemagne was 2 years old. around Yateley 2017 November 45

Yateley Past People 200 & 381

YEARS AGO

This series of articles on the history of Yateley looks back into the past of ordinary people who were born (baptised) in this month in centuries past. I hope you find it interesting. The Parish Records of St Peter’s are a superb online source published by The Yateley Society which we can use. The baptism record ends about 1904, so 100 years ago is not available. There were no baptisms in October 1717, so have gone back to the 4 baptisms in October 1636, and 10 in November 1817.

1717 November

There was only baptism this month 300 years ago: Alice Ives baptised 18 November 1717 daughter of Thomas Ives

Alice Ives

Alice Ives was baptised in Yateley on 18 November 1717 daughter of Thomas Ives. Thomas Ives was baptised on 13 June 1678 the son of John Ives. Thomas Ives married Joan Geal on 1 May 1707. John Copperthwaite’s grandfather, Robert Coperthwaite (1742-??) married Phebee Eiles at Dummer on 18 February 1770. In the Hampshire Poll Book of 1779, Robert Copperthwaite was a resident of Winchester and voted for the Tory Sir Richard Worsley, Bart, in the by-election in the Kingsclere Division as an owner of freeholds in West Sherborn. As an aside, Sir Richard Worsley lost the election as he was rumoured to be a cuckold, which evolved into a scandal that both rocked and amused the country three years later in 1782 after his wife Lady Worsley, born Seymour Dorothy Fleming daughter of Sir John Fleming, ran off with her lover, Hampshire Militia Captain George Bisset in 1781, the father of her second child, who Sir Richard claimed was his own daughter on the baptism certificate, to avoid the scandal. Running off with her lover, however, forced Sir Richard’s hand, so he sued her under the tort of “criminal conversation” (a common law euphermism for adultery) for £20,000 in damages (£2.2m in today’s currency). However, his wife turned the case in her favour by admitting to 27 adulterous affairs, which included a number of testimonies by her lovers and a doctor who testified that she had caught a venereal disease from the Marquess of Graham, and included evidence that Worsley had displayed his wife naked to Bisset in Maidstone bath house, a tacit encouragement of their affair. Worsley won the case, as Seymour had adequately admitted many lovers, but the jury only awarded him one shilling in damages (value £5.50 today).
