Yateley Mayday May Fayre is the first opportunity in the Yateley calendar to gather on Yateley Green and see many of all the voluntary groups and activities which you can join in and enjoy during the rest of the year.

Whatever interests you, May Fayre has generally got it covered, from guides and scouts, dancing and keep fit, slimming, conservation, history, sports, learning, gardening, WI and Townswomen’s Guild, etc.

There will be plenty of food and drink, entertainment for the kids, raffles, tombola, etc, plus of course the main Arena events.

They have an event at Yateley Library on 30 May starting at 11am, for children and rock painting, which sounds like a lot of fun.

As you can see from some of the examples of the group’s art, they do meet up to paint the same subject from time to time, be it public house, by a river or on a canal tow path, which gives artists plenty of opportunities to share experiences and the 10 around Yateley May 2017

BAKE OFF

The Great Yateley Bake Off was held at St Peter’s Church on Saturday 1 April and I represented the Town Mayor in the contest, where four local celebrities were required to bake and decorate 12 cup cakes in front of a vocal audience of at least 50 of Yateley’s residents. They had organised their very own ‘Mary Berry’ in the shape of Glenda, and a couple of suspicious looking gents posing as Mel and Sue.

Andy the Vicar came prepared with his own personalised cooking vestments, a rather tasty pinny emblazoned with the old King’s crown and the endorsement “Keep Calm - The Vicar’s Baking A Cake”. The Curate, Sarah, was self-sifted into the mix as she had organised the event, almost as a swan song as she departs soon for her new parish in Bournemouth.

Sue of Discoveries completed the female line up, wearing a tasteful selection of Discoveries’ second user gear, which she threatened to sell off and, we all presumed (ok, me only then) remove from about her person in the Auction that was to follow the competition. Yours truly, stood in for the Mayor on this occasion.

The event was ably compered by Richard and Roger, or ‘Mel’ and ‘Sue’ as they were constantly referred to, to the entertainment of the audience.

Of course, as the comperes had prepared their script with various “Crisp” jokes, they were rather more than disappointed to find me stirring the cake mix instead. I explained that I was asked by Gerry following a phone call which went something like this: “Hello Buddy, what’yer doing on the first of April?”

Hesitating, due to it being April Fool’s Day, I admitted, “Nothing, Gerry.”

“Can you fill in for me at the Church, all you gotta do is eat up some cakes.

That sounded too simple to be true, so I asked, “How many cakes and how big are they?“

“I can manage that,” I boasted, thinking I’ll skip lunch.

“Oh, one other thing, Buddy, you’re competing against other celebrities.”

“Celebrities?”

“Yeah, like the Vicar and other local celebrities.”

As I am built for comfort rather than speed, this was the race for me, I thought, I could always skip breakfast, be lean and mean.

“OK, Gerry I can manage that.”

It didn’t turn out quite as expected, and money was raised through entrance fees and the cakes were sold off by auction, varying from £5 up to £20. Sue kept her clothes on too, so it was all good clean fun! around Yateley 2017 May 27

Exotic Butterflies at Wisley Earlier this year the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley put on its annual display of butterflies in the Glasshouse.

There were over 50 different varieties of colourful “hothouse� rain forest varieties of 30 around Yateley May 2017

butterflies are huge, hailing from North, Central and South America as well as South East Asia. There were more than 6000 butterflies on display during January and February, giving those of us weary of the long winter and wishing to inject some much-needed vibrant colour back into our lives.

There were 15 new varieties of butterflies introduced this year, including the Blue Wave butterflies from Central America with sapphire blue wings delicately patterned in white. Another newbie was the Giant Swallowtail from North America, which is similar to its cousins in the UK, only with a wingspan of up to 180mm! There was the Tiger Leafwing, which is a master of camouflage, once the orange upper wings are closed and it resembles a dead leaf. around Yateley 2017 May 33

GHOST OF YATELEY PAST? To begin with, I wasn’t afraid as I watched the man on his horse approaching along the track through the copse. It was almost dusk though and I knew my Mum would be worried if I wasn’t home for tea. As the horse and rider drew closer, there was an eerie silence and I began to tremble. The horse, without a sound, reared up and with wild eyes, turned and cantered easily away, the highwayman’s cloak and chaps flapping. I watched as he silently followed the track and disappeared from view. I summoned up every ounce of energy and fled to my home and family but somehow my voice was lost and the words just wouldn’t come….

If you know that dark copse opposite St Swithun’s Church, then you may be able to imagine my disbelief!!! I’ve recounted that early evening in 1965, many times over the years and can still vividly recall the sight, scent but soundless scene.

Now I’ll fast forward to 2016 when my husband was researching some historical facts about Yateley and exclaimed excitedly that he had found ‘my highwayman’!!!

He found that legend has it that a Parson Darby, who preached at Yateley Church, would ride slowly up to Monteagle House behaving like the perfect Rector, dressed in his preacher’s attire.

He would then take a fast horse from the farm at night, change into his highwayman’s clothes and mask and do his robbing along the A30 route. He would return the horse and change back into his ecclesiastical clothes, and return from Monteagle farmhouse to Darby Green as though butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth…!

That would most certainly take him through the area of the copse opposite St. Swithun’s Church where I had ‘seen’ him!!!

One side of the story is that he was very generous to the poor but maybe with his ill-gotten loot!!! He was eventually found out and hanged but his ghost lives on…

So there we have it, whether or not you or I believe in ghosts, I can honestly say I’ve seen one with my own eyes here in Yateley!

Yateley May Fayre Bank Holiday Monday 1 May 2017

Another great day of fun and festivities for the whole family!

Yateley Green will be home to the May Fayre on May Day Monday 1 May 2017 and everyone is invited to come and join the fun.

The May Fayre Car Boot Sale will provide the normal bustling start to activities at 8am. Come early to find a bargain and experience the lively feeling of early morning on the Green.

The main Fayre will start at 10.30am, with the Town Mayor of Yateley providing a warm welcome to what will turn out to be an exciting day of activities.

The May Fayre will have the usual wide range of stalls surrounding a central arena.

Stalls include: • Crafts, plants, baked treats and many other items for sale • Tombolas and games, including the ever-popular Crockery Smash • Fairground rides for kids • Local charities showcasing their work around Yateley 2017 May 39

• Various food and drink stands so you can fill and refresh yourself during the day New for this year will be a Vehicle Show where local enthusiasts will show off their classic and other beautiful cars. The entry form is available to download from our website on www.yateleylions.co.uk.

The arena events will be the normal centre of attraction during the day with performances from: The Rockwood Dog Display Team will provide great family entertainment. The display will take the audience through every aspect of dog training, from obedience performed to music, dogs jumping through fire hoops, agility, fly ball and active Man Work where a dog will be seen to apprehend an armed criminal. The show will end with an exciting agility relay race, with two teams racing against the clock and the audience cheering on their chosen team.

Cadets from the Portsmouth naval bases of HMS Sultan, HMS Collingwood and HMS Excellent (Royal Marines) will provide an exhilarating display of skill and speed as they race around the arena stripping and re-assembling nineteenth century field guns, as used in the Battle of Ladysmith. The guns weigh over a third of a ton and each wheel weighs about 70 pounds, the same weight as a small cadet! The display includes a demonstration run and a fast timed competition run, simulating an attack on an enemy position. It will be a competitive, tough, thrilling display involving discipline and teamwork.

The boys and girls of the Sandhurst & District Corps of Drums have been performing since 2005, in their distinctive and colourful uniform, based on the Royal Marines Band including a White Pith Helmet.

During their marching display, the band will be performing all the old favourites such as The Great Escape, Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, Yankee Doodle, Dambusters and many more tunes.

In between these main acts, local troupes of dancers will entertain you with their beauty, skill and grace.

The arena events finish with the ever popular Open Fun Dog Show where a large 40 around Yateley May 2017

collection of pampered pooches compete to win classes such as dog with the waggiest tail, the best behaved, most like their owner, most laid back, the most appealing face and the loudest bark.

As usual, Eagle Radio will provide background music, announcements and commentaries throughout the day.

Yateley Civic Day 17 JUNE 2017

Nationally, Civic Day falls on 17 June this year, with a theme of Conservation. 2017 marks the 70th anniversay since the first Conservation Areas were set up in the United Kingdom.

The national project is driven by Civic Voice, but locally the two main organisers are The Yateley Society and Yateley Town Council. They are organising a programme of events in the week either side of the main day 17 June.

They are launching a couple of competitions which are open to all ages and all residents of the town of Yateley.

The first competition is a piece of Creative Writing. This gives you an opportunity for you to put down in writing your thoughts about where you live and what you think keeps people here, or how you feel Yateley will be in the uncertain future ahead.

Your piece of creative writing could be in the form of a poem, a short essay of 500 words, or even something as small as a Tweet. It doesn’t even have to be a factual essay, it can be a short story.

The second competition is a Photographic Competition. Again, conservation and where you live is a basic theme, but we are open to receive spontaneous images taken on mobile phones, right up to high quality DSLR shots. Or why not try your hand at a collage or a piece of art in the form of retouched prints. Whatever you think sums up Yateley to you in visual form can enter.

Certificates for the winners will be presented by the Town Mayor of Yateley during the Community & Environment Committee Meeting on 12 June at or shortly after 7.30pm at The Tythings.

We have also organised a series of four guided walks around conservation areas in Yateley: Darby Green, Cricket Hill, Church End and Castle Bottom. Posters will be appearing soon on Town Council notice boards and leaflets available at the Town Council and Yateley Society stands at the May Fayre. Because of the anticipated demand on these walks, you will need to book in advance.

On Civic Day itself, Saturday 17 June, There will opportunities for a guided walk around part of Yateley Hall, the Grade II* listed building in Hall Lane, once the home of the De Winton Corries. The origins of the house go back to medieval times. There will be refreshment tents on the Hall lawn and this should be a unique experience to many, as the last time the doors were open to the public was in the mid-1990s. around Yateley 2017 May 47

The Ladies’ section of Yateley United Football Club may only be two seasons’ young, but they have come a long way in that short time.

They were third in their first season out of nine teams in the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League, playing their games in the South Section of Division 2. They were knocked out of the League Cup that first year but reached the quarterfinals of the Plate.

They got to the semifinals of the League Cup this time, beating a Division 1 side away from home, only losing out to Benson Lionesses who only lost out on the Division 1 title on goal difference.

In 21 games this season, they’ve lost 1 cup and 1 league game, scored 98 goals and conceded 21, including 8 clean sheets, with a run of 12 wins. And not a single yellow or red card to their names.

It all started with Vikkie Moffatt, who approached the club two years ago with a tentative plan to form a Ladies’ Section, and the club welcomed them with open arms.

They were set up with the nearest Ladies’ league, started with nothing more than enthusiasm and were as surprised as the men when they won their debut game 13-0 away from home! And what a start!

We hope now for an excellent season in Division 1, level 7 of the women’s pyramid.

Community Speedwatch Drivers in Yateley may have noticed in recent months the appearance of flashing Speed Limit Reminder signs on various roads in the town. These SLRs are battery operated and are affixed to lampposts. They flash up the speed you should be going if you’re travelling in excess of the road’s safe driving speed. They are able to collect statistical data, such as number of vehicles and the speeds recorded.

There is a scheme in operation, governed by Hampshire County Council, to allow local town and parishes to purchase their own devices, which cost about £2700 each, but the rules for their use are strict. For a start they can only be used in roads and positions which have suitable straight stretches for the rader to operate and a convenient lamppost to fix them to. Also, they are only permitted to be positioned in one place for no more than two or three weeks before they have to be moved onto a different location to the positions approved by HCC Highways.

It is quite common for parishes to share these devices, especially those that may only have one or two roads suitable for use. With this in mind, Yateley Town Council have combined with Blackwater & Hawley, to purchase three units, on an 80:20 ratio, to reflect the number of roads split between the two parishes.

Roads nominated in Yateley are Bell Lane, Chandlers Lane, Cricket Hill Lane, Darby Green Road, Frogmore Road, Hall Lane, Handford Lane, Monteagle Lane, Reading Road, Reading Road (near Baileys Close/East Green and near the YTC offices and West Green), Rosemary Lane, Sandhurst Road and Vigo Lane.

Unlike the volunteer-manned Community Speedwatch teams you see about, registration numbers are not recorded and offending motorists do not get a letter from the Police informing them of their speed and warning of their future conduct.

If your road has a problem with speeding why not call your Yateley Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101? If sufficient concerns are raised about speeding in particular areas, your local police will investigate, and a radar unit, police unit equipped with radar or a community speedwatch team may be deployed to the area.

DarbyGreen & Frogmore Social Hall

The Darby Green & Frogmore Social Hall, located in Frogmore Road, is a community hall funded by the Millenium Project and the National Lottery.

The new hall replaced an old wooden hut that served the surrounding villages for over 60 years. A group of volunteers and trustees help run and maintain the activities and services offered at the hall.

They are a registered charity (No. 301799) and proud to be self supporting, are not run by Hart or Yateley councils, and they want to remain that way.

They are always looking for new members to join their committee. Meetings are held bi-monthly. If you are interested in being a member and helping to run and maintain the hall for future generations, don’t hesitate to contact them through their wesite www.dgfsocialhall.co.uk They have a wide range of activities booked in. On Mondays they have Revival Keep Fit, Art Club, Line Dancing, Brownies and Rainbows.

Wednesday there is Zumba Gold, Line Dancing, and Frogmore School of Dance, Thursday there is Dog Club and Frogmore School of Dance, Friday has Little Kickers, Blackwater Friday Club, Line Dancing, and Frogmore School of Dance, Saturday morning Frogmore School of Dance, Saturday afternoon and evening, plus Sunday until 6pm are free for Private Parties.

Yateley Past People 200& 300 YEARS AGO

This history of Yateley series of articles is a look back into the past of ordinary people who were born (or more exactly baptised) in this month in centuries past and their historical context. I hope you find it interesting. The Parish Records of St Peter’s are a superb online source published by The Yateley Society which we can use. The baptism record ends about 1904, so 100 years ago is not available. Once again there were no baptisms in spring 1717.

But we do have May 1636 and May 1817 to see who was adding to Yateley’s population.

1636 May

On Sunday May Day 1636, there were two baptisms, Henry, son of Henry Draper, and Robert son of Thomas Haines.

Henry Draper

Henry Draper Junior was baptised on baptised on Sunday 1 May 1636, son of Henry Draper Senior. Later records show that Richard’s wife’s name was Margaret. A Margaret Ham and Richard Carpenter were married on 11 July 1613 in East Tisted, Alton. A Richardus Carpenter, son of Rodolphi Carpenter was born in Ropley near Alton in 1585. Also living in Yateley at the time were a Leonard Draper who had a couple of children in the 1630s and 1640s. At Yateley’s church, a Margaret Draper married John Ellis on 17 November 1636 and a Richard Draper married Martha Geal in 1651, while a Joan Draper married Samuel Geal in 1656. The children of Henry and Margaret Draper born in Yateley were: (1) Henry Draper baptised 1 May 1636 son of Henry Draper (2) Margaret Draper baptised Boxing Day 1637, Yateley, daughter of Henry Draper (3) James Draper baptised 10 November 1639 son of Henry Draper, buried 23 December 1639 There are no further entries for this family that can be traced locally.

Sarah Goddard (nee Marlow) from Hawley was buried 17 February 1800 age 46. Her husband, John Goddard, may be the John Goddard (1739-1823) baptised 3 August 1739, son of John Goddard (1708-??) and Anne Smither (1715-1804), who was buried in Yateley 18 May 1823, having died in Cove, purported to be 88 years old.

Charlotte Ridgers (1792-1850) may have been buried 25 August 1850 in “Yatley”, age 69, as Charlotte Goddard. Charlotte was baptised on 7 October 1792, born 5 October 1792, daughter of John Ridgers and Mary. I cannot find a marriage of Rohn and Mary, so this may be a transcription error. John Ridgers was born in Frimley, “son of Robt Rudgers & Mary his wife bapt 7 6 1751 [6 July 1751]”. John married Sarah Chapman (or Chapman alias Chappleton) on 29 September 1744 in Yateley.

John Ridgers was either buried in Yateley on 4 November 1832 age 82, or buried 30 November 1816 age 65 from Hawley?

As for Sarah Ridgers, there is no record of a burial between 1790 and 1792, but the gap of two or three years between her children was consistent with the parish clerk writing down the wrong name. Sarah Ridgers nee Chapman was either buried 4 February 1821 age 72 (born c1749), or was she the Sarah Ridgers buried 10 April 1801 age 45 (born 1756)?

Anne Cox remarried to agricultural labourer Alexander Smart (1794-1860) in Yateley on 21 November 1839. Alexander’s first wife Jane Miles (1800-1831), who he married in Chute, Wiltshire on Christmas Day 1819and was buried 5 May 1831 age 31 in Yateley. Alexander Smart was baptised in Chute on 22 June 1794, the son of John and Elizabeth Smart, Alexander Smart was buried 6 May 1860, age 66 and Anne Smart was buried 6 January 1867 age 79, while living in Yateley Workhouse.

Ann Isabella Sleark

Ann Isabella Sleark, daughter of Joseph and Mary Sleark, baptised 25 May 1817, father was a shoe maker from Yateley Joseph Slark (1783-1855) married Mary Bunch (1784-1872) in Yateley on 3 September 1807. A Henry Slark married Elizabeth Bourne in Yateley on 2 February 1767.

Joseph and Mary had the following children: (1) George Slark (1808-1855) (a twin) was baptised 28 August 1808, Yateley son of Joseph and Mary Slark, born 30 June 1808, married Martha Giles 1 December 1839, their first child was Frances Slark alias Giles the daughter of Martha Giles (1817-1853) a single woman. The Walking Group Yateley Zoe Livingstone only started The Walking Group Yateley on 6 February 2017. She had moved to the area in September 2016 and, although her children settled very quickly into their schools, and were making friends easily, she was finding it more difficult to meet people.

She is a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor and loves walking in the many beautiful places we have locally to Yateley residents. So, she thought she would put the idea out to the local community to see what kind of response she got from local people looking to enjoy some fresh air and walking at a comfortable pace.

She opened the group and put a post onto the Yateley Community Facebook page and was overwhelmed by the response she received.

The newly minted group had their first meeting on Saturday 4 March and had 10 people taking part. Now they meet every Saturday at 9am in various locations in Yateley and the surrounding areas, with between 15 to 18 members at each meeting.

The walks always start at 9am on Saturday. There is no charge to take part in these walks.

Zoe organises a 6-weekly lunch for the group, the first of which was on 8 April and this has also proved to be a great success. So far they have had lunch at The Ely on the A30, which is handy for the Common and Gravel Pond, and The Crown & Cushion pub in Minley, after walking around Hawley Lakes.

As a personal trainer, Zoe also runs regular fitness sessions around the area for those looking to improve their fitness and perhaps burn calories to lose weight.

started and finished at the Scout Hut Car Park in Monteagle Lane, as it is important to measure your performance against previous sessions. Zoe also operates a “Couch to 5k” course at 7pm on Mondays; this is a course lasting 6 weeks to build up your stamina, again about 45-60 minutes per session, charge £36 for the course. For the Power Walking and Couch sessions, it is important that a PARQ (Physical Activity Readiness Questionaire) is completed to ensure participants’ safety.

There is no need to fill in the PARQ form for the casual walks on Saturdays for which there is no fee.

Zoe says they are such a lovely group of people with a great variety of ages and abilities who take part in the walks. She was so unsure if anyone would be interested at all and now, less than four months on since launching the idea, they have 172 members belonging to the group and many of them are regular walkers taking part in the Saturday walks.

She is so glad she took the chance to launch this new group.
