Yateley New traditions

What opportunities we’ve had to establish new traditions and revisit the best of old ones at the time of the year when we embrace so many.

Within this issue we take stock of a recent local event, Gig on the Green.

This is becoming a great tradition.

We’ve also held the second annual community picnic, and the Yateley 10k road race series is a firm fixture in our local calendar.

This month we revived the Open Day at Yateley Hall, of which we want to deepen our experience in the future and expand the event.

As part of that Civic Day celebration, The Yateley Society launched creative competitions, staged an interesting series of walks and, with the Yateley Common Rangers and Yelabus, pulled off an evening visit to Castle Bottom.

Now we look further back into local traditions and are planning to revive and modernise the ritual of Beating the Bounds, when parish officers and local folk walk the boundary of the parish and further establish fellowship within our community. GOTG ’17

Once again, the 7th annual Yateley Music Festival, manifested in the Gig on the Green open air concert on Yateley Green, and held on the last weekend in June, was a resounding success.

The Saturday crowd seemed more densely packed than I can remember before and the arrivals for the start of the Sunday session certainly swelled earlier than the previous two years. “around Yateley” produced two special editions over the weekend.

Sitting together for Freddie It is great to see the Hunt family home and full of smiles again after their ordeals in the States over Freddie’s treatments and hospital visits to Frimley as the 3-year-old Freddie is now recovering at home, while the family readjust to normal life again.

To celebrate their homecoming, David and Abby Hunt have donated a park bench to Yateley community, whose fantastic support made the possibility of treatment a reality.

Dave is shown screwing a commemorative plate to the bench, which has been erected on Yateley Green overlooking the playground.

Hart Chairman Gerry Crisp, who helped to publicise Freddie’s plight while Mayor of Yateley, was on hand to take a few happy family snaps.

We wish Freddie and his family well and can be rightly proud of the way Yateley rallied round when help was needed.

Walk the Parish boundary THE ANCIENT CUSTOM OF BEATING THE BOUNDS

Beating the bounds is an ancient custom still observed at Rogationtide. The time of Rogation falls in the fifth week after Easter and consists of Rogation Sunday and the three days immediately following, Monday to Wednesday, the week before Ascension Day. The name springs from the word rogere, “to ask or beseech”, and the object of the processions held during that period, or on Ascension Day itself, is to beseech God’s blessing upon the new spring crops or, in the case of coastal parishes, to protect the fisheries. Many parishes also used this time to mark afresh the parish boundaries, in fact laws were passed to ensure that this secular aspect of Rogation was carried out by others than the clerks in holy orders and the churchwardens.

The rituals are ancient, indeed they pre-date Christianity, although they first appear upon the Christian calendar in the 5th century: in 470 Mamertus, Archbishop of Vienne, ordered litanies to be said in solemn ceremony through the fields on Ascension Day and on the three days following. In 511, the first Council of Orleans extended the pious custom to the whole of Gaul and, by the 8th century, the practice had spread to England, where it was often referred to as Ganging Days or Goingaganging, after the Anglo-Saxon word gangen, “to go”. The laws of Alfred the Great and Æthelstan mention that the practice was a parochial duty. Priests would stop and pray at points in the walk, often singing Psalms 103 and 104, and the priest might say “Cursed is he who transgresseth the bounds or doles of his neighbour.”

Many time-honoured rituals disappeared following the Reformation, but the clerical side of beating the bounds was reinforced by a more secular practice by a Royal Injunction by Elizabeth I in 1559.

In Manchester John Dee recorded in his diary of 1597 that he was with the curate, the clerk and “diverse of the town of diverse ages”, the perambulation of the huge parish taking 6 days in all.

In The Country Parson George Herbert observed in 1652 that there were four reasons to continue the ritual: “(1) a Blessing of God for the fruits of the fields, (2) Justice in the preservation of the bounds, (3) Charitie, in living walking and neighbourly accompanying one another, with reconciling of differences at that time, if they be any, (4) Mercie, in relieving the poor by a liberal distribution of largess which at that time is or ought to be made.”

When maps were rare or did not exist, parishioners on Eversley both sides of the boundaries Yateley needed to know where they were, so parishioners understood where they paid their tithes, and it was essential to know where Blackwater you stood regarding alms & Hawley rtley Wintney and burial rights. Thus the young of the parish were encouraged to take part and, carrying green willow boughs, would beat them upon the marker stones that mark their way around the border. Often the boys would be beaten at each landmark, dragged through hedges, thrown into streams, even forced to climb over roofs where field houses straddle the parish line, to reinforce the lesson so they might remember and pass the locations on in their turn. At the end of the walk they were rewarded with money, or white willow wands, or some other gift associated with the beating.

At one time in Leicester, a new parish officer, walking the bounds for the first time, would be seized, thrust head downwards in a hole in a river bank and smitten with a shovel; once he paid a “fine” of 5/- he was considered “free” of the parish.

Crondall On Ascension Day at the Tower of London, the resident Governor, the Yeoman Wardens, the Chaplain of the Tower and all the Choirboys, all participants dressed in their full dress uniforms, beat the bounds; when they reach the 31st mark, the Chaplain calls out loudly, “Cursed is he who removeth his neighbour’s land mark”.

Then the Chief Warden gives the order, “Whack it boys, whack it!” and the choirboys beat the mark enthusiastically with the willow wands. This ritual has been recorded since 1555 and may indeed be much older than that, the ritual since enshrined as right by a Charter of James II in 1687.

What of the practice of beating the bounds in the Parish of Yateley? The last record of the Beating of the Bounds was on Monday 5 May 1902, when the perambulation of the parish was attempted by 20 souls and completed by 8 all in one day, 14 miles around Yateley 2017 July 11

around the bounds in total. The report noted that the previous time the bounds were beaten was some 12 years earlier, in 1890. This is the newspaper account: “1902 Hants & Berks Gazette Saturday 10 May 1902 H&BG P6 col3 BEATING OF THE BOUNDS 12 years since last bounds were beaten in Yateley. Party of about 20 assembled at Old Mill 10 am [Monday] 5 May. (14 years ago the old mill was still standing [1888?] and the most picturesque part of the village.) About 300 yards along the river from the bridge is an island or “Eyot” – common land of about half an acres, no way to it except on the bed of the river. It is the only island in the River Blackwater and maybe Yateley’s name was derived from it. Up to Dudden Brook and across the Flats called in King Edgar’s day “Huæf’s Shelf” From the source of the stream is a bank leading to Castle Bottom.

Through the woods of Lord Calthorpe and Mr Currie in a straight line to the Old Lodge at Minley. Lunch here. Two boundaries – the old and the new - the new marked some land given by Mr Currie in exchange for enclosing a strip by Hawley Pond.

Just opposite Starveacre the boundary leaves the bank and goes across an arable field belonging to Mr Currie – but 2 pollarded oaks about quarter-mile apart mark the line.

From the further pollard a ditch and bank mark the boundary right into the corner almost to the pond and back again to Starveacre. All the gardens and houses in Starveacre are in Yateley. A small strip of Sir Richard Harris’s park including lodge are in Yateley. From his entrance gate diagonally across main road to the holly bush at the end of the Cottage garden. The ditch runs through the back of The Queen public house into Admiral Gibson’s property. The whole of his house is in Yateley and the greater part of his gardens. Thence the line runs down to the nurses’ home and one of the posts of the garden fence a broad arrow marks the boundary.

Thence a straight line from the river across the railway and from there to the Old Mill.

Eight went start to finish, total distance 14 miles.”

If we can overcome the problems of organising such a walk, something that once would have been of interest to everyone in the community, it could be a repeatable event every ten or fifteen years. The Town Clerk and I have already begun to talk to some of the organisations that would be needed to make this happen, with the aim to both raise money for the Town Mayor’s Annual Charity (in this case Yelabus) and to further reinforce a sense of community in our Town. This would require determining the route, assessing risk and adjusting accordingly, managing traffic, parking, handling sponsor registrations and collection, and counting people out and back again, with emphasis on the safety of all involved, particularly children. Rules will have to be drawn up and agreed, such as is it better to have the rule that “No Boys be beaten”, or “No Boys be beaten mercilessly”, such fine lines to be drawn when melding tradition with modern society!

The mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus) is resident all year round, with about a quarter million breeding pairs throughout the UK except for the Outer Hebrides. They mainly feed on insects, worms, slugs and berries, such as hawthorn, holly and yew. The female usually builds the nest, using grass, roots, moss, leaves and mud, lined with soft grass. They nest mostly in forks of branches in trees but also in shrubs and crevices in walls. The mistle thrush breeds from February to May, usually in 2 clutches, with 3 to 6 eggs, which hatch within 2 weeks and the young birds are ready to fledge between 2 and 3 weeks after hatching.

The number of mistle thrushes has been in decline since the 1970s, so they are on the amber list. It is hoped that the decline has bottomed out and numbers will improve.

hunting over open country searching for voles and other small rodents, but will take other small mammals, frogs, birds and insects. They often nest in trees, barns and derelict buildings or crevices in rocks or cliffs, and they will use nest boxes.

Pairs nest for life. There are only 5000 breeding pairs in the UK, so although they

are resident all year, they are still rare sights. Breeding starts in April and they can have 1 to 2 broods a year, with 4-7 eggs in the nest, laid at two-day intervals.

The eggs take just over a month to hatch, with fledging taking up to another 2 months. Only females incubate the eggs but both sexes share the feeding.

If food is in short supply the parents will feed the biggest birds and feed the youngest to the eldest.

In the last 30 years the barn owl population has declined by up to 70%, largely due to changes in farming practices, such as the loss of hedgerows where their prey live. In addition, more owls are being killed in collisions with road vehicles and increasingly it seems that the birds are failing to breed as they have in previous years.

Community Picnic on Yateley Green

Although there was no set theme for the second annual community picnic on the green, there were plenty of activities to keep families amused as well as enjoying the beautiful open space at the heart of Yateley.

In contrast to last year, when almighty thunderstorms threatened to wash out the event before it even started, the sun shone bright and warm all day.

Entertainment came in the form of music played all afternoon by the very competent Fox Hillbillies playing a range of old and familiar tunes, including blues, bluegrass, The Beatles and soft rock, and

there was BBQ food from the scouts, and fantastic cakes from Our Harry’s Smile charity stall. Of course, being a picnic, many picnickers brought their own food with them.

OYSTERS National Fish &Chips Day On Friday 2 June Town Mayor Tony Spencer launched the National Fish & Chips Day at the impressive Oysters Fish N Chips shop in Kingfisher Parade, Rosemary Lane, Darby Green.

The new product they were launching on the day was a fillet of battered cod in a bap: a “Fishwich” for £3.50.

I can certainly vouch for crispiness of the batter and the flavour of the fresh fried fish.

Oysters Fish N Chips have three outlets, in Lightwater, Marlow and the latest in Darby Green. Owner Gav Singh Ghag was kept busy having scheduled activities at each “chippie” during National Fish & Chips Day. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday 11.30-2pm and 5-10pm.

WALKING FOOTBALL

The latest sports craze of Walking Football was launched in Yateley on 8 June, with the first match organised by Yateley United FC on the tennis courts on the Green. Played by over 55s, the game has the same rules as 5-a-side, but players must keep one foot on the ground at all times. Now the club truly has players signed on from under 7 to over 70! If you are interested in joining in the fun, they’ve booked the site every Thursday 2-3pm.

Each race in the series is limited to

1000 entrants and all races are fully booked up well before the first race is staged.

A total of 864 runners completed the first race and 185 completed the Fun Run around the around Yateley 2017 July 33

school field. The Fun Run is approximately 1.5km and sets off about 10 minutes after the main race has been started.

Entries for the Fun Run are still open and you can even sign up on the night for an extra 50p. Some of the fun runners are as young as 4! The dates of the next two races are 12 July and 2 August.

De Winton Corry to the manor born?

Martin De Winton Corry and his family are recorded as purchasing Yateley Hall from the Collett family on 13 March 1866, consisting of the house and 170 acres of land, although they don’t appear to have moved in straight away. In 1871 Martin commissioned a young but now-renowned architect Richard Norman Shaw to bring the house up to a high specification to befit a gentleman’s family.

So, who was this Martin De Winton Corry and where did he come from?

I looked on The Yateley Society website first. The family were basically lords and ladies of the Yateley manor from the 1880s until his daughter Margaret died in 1943 and the Hall changed hands.

The Society had various snippets of information, that I noted: (1) he was from Straw Hall, Co Carlow, Ireland; (2) he was born in London about 1822; (3) he was found dead in London 4 February 1885 age about 64; (4) he had no occupation at time of death; (5) he only leased Yateley Hall, it was purchased after his death by his widow or daughter (I have not seen this evidence yet); (6) one of his acquaintances, John Anstruther-Thompson, in his Eighty Years’ Reminiscences, refers to “Martin De Winton-Corry” as “Spicy Bill”, thought to be a reference to a popular song about a fop who wipes his nose on his sleeve.

The census revealed his birthplace as St Pancras, which led me to find an index of what appeared to be an older brother called “Wilkins Master[?] Gell Corry” in 1815.

The middle name was confirmed as “Martin” by looking at the actual birth register rather than a transcript. Further searches led me to find two sisters, both baptised at the same time but Catherine Eliza Corry was born in 1816 and Emma Louisa Corry born in 1817. I had seen Catherine Corry mentioned before, in the 1891 census in Yateley, which confirmed that she was Martin Corry’s sister: 1891 Yateley Hants, Yateley Green household 68 Margaret D W Corry head wid 62 living on own means Scotland Margaret D W Corry daur s 30 do do Sussex Bognor E B Irene Fortescue cousin s 27 do do Scotland Kingscausie Selina Good servt s 25 dom Gloucester Colsthorpe Dora Good servt s 23 do do do A Beresford Thomas visitor s 72 living on own means Salop Broton Hall Catherine Corry sister in law s 70 do London

But still no sign of a birth of the younger brother Martin born around 1821 or 1822, nor any hint to the “De Winton” name. Still, I had his parents’ names, Robert and Louisa Corry. I found their marriage licence issued by St Giles in Camberwell on 25 November 1813, the magnificent image of which is spread across the start of this article. The wording reads: “Appeared personally The Reverend Robert Corry clerk and made Oath, that he is of the Parish of Saint Giles Camberwell in the County of Surrey a Bachelor aged twenty one years upwards and intended to marry with Louisa Harmar of the Parish of Saint Luke Chelsea in the County of Middlesex, spinster also aged twenty one years upwards and that he knowest of no lawful Impediment, by reason of any Pre42 around Yateley July 2017

So, Martin’s father was a clergyman. That led me to St Luke in Chelsea and their marriage on 1 December 1813. The index has Corry listed as “Gorney” but was due to the handwriting of the time and no impediment to locating the entry I wanted.

“Robert Corry Bachelor of St Giles Camberwell Louisa Harmar Spinster of this parish Married by Licence with consent of [blank] first Day of December 1813 Both signed the register Witnesses: Emma Gell, Mary [unreadable, possibly Harmar], Martha Stock, Mary Gell, Louisa J Thompson” One interesting fact to emerge was that a clear friend of either partner was the Gell family, with Emma and Mary as witnesses. Gell was one of Wilkins Corry’s middle names. Louisa J Thompson has as good a signature as Louisa Harmer, and she was tracked down in 1841 in St Mary’s, Newington, Lambeth as living as an Independent, then 1861, age 70, still single and living as a lodger in a lodging house in Paddington, her occupation described as “Lady”. She was possibly born in Soho, Middlesex. around Yateley 2017 July 43

St Pancras Parish land tax records 1815

Camberwell and Chelsea were not St Pancras, so I searched the land tax records to find where the married couple lived: this revealed No 23 Russell Place, where in 1815 Revd R Corry was paying £90 per annum rent and liable for 11s 3d land tax.

His landlords were the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. This is the earliest reference to Revd R Corry living in No 23, but his name doesn’t appear on the actual lease until 1818, so he may have been a sub tenant paying rent for the first few years there. In 1817 a commentator, Robert Lamb, took lodgings in Russell Street and said that it was “the individual spot” he liked best “in all this great city”. Of course, the street did not emerge completely unscathed from World War II. In the Survey of London vol 21 the Parish of St Pancras, Part 3, published in 1949, to record the ravages of the Blitz, “Russell Place” is now named Fitzroy Street and is the continuation of Charlotte Street from Howland Street to Maple Street (which was once London Street). The house numbering was changed as well as the street name. The Nos 25 and 23 Russell Place today, renamed Fitzroy Street

numbers of Russell Street ran consecutively from south to north from Charlotte Street to Maple Street, 1 to 12, then from 13 to 24 down the western side, north to south. No 23 is now No 3, and the occupier from 1818 to 1833 is listed as The Rev. Robert Corrie.

The houses were built in 1790, according to the leases of the Duchess of Bedford, the Survey asserted. By 1949 Nos 1 and 3 (formerly 24 and 23) had been rebuilt. All the original houses in the street were 4 storeys high.

The Reverend Robert Corry regularly appears in the land tax records from 1815 to 1833. In 1825 the proprietor is changed from the Bedfords to “for Percy Chapel”.

Robert needed a Bachelor of Arts degree to enjoy the fruits of being a clerk in holy orders, so a search of Oxford Alumni revealed the following entry: “Robert Corry, s Robert of Elsmere, Salop, gent, Brassnose Coll, matric 15 March 1788 age 17, BA 1791, MA 1794” 46 around Yateley July 2017

So now I know approximately when and where Robert Corry was born and have one parent’s name. The first area to check was Clergy of the Church of England, which covers Church of England personnel since the 16th century. The database told me that Robert was born on 27 March 1770. This made him 43 at his marriage to Louisa Harmar, who was 20, which was why they needed a licence. He was first ordained, after his BA graduation in 1791, as Deacon by Bishop Richard Hurd in Worcester Cathedral on 30 November 1791, and later ordained priest there on 25 July 1794 shortly after receiving his MA from Brasenose College. On the same day, he was appointed Curate to the parish of St Giles at Bredon with Bredon’s Norton, a tiny village in the Cotswolds in South Worcestershire, made famous by AE Houseman’s poem about Bredon Hill.

The village was also the home, in her later life, of Victoria Claire Woodhull who, in 1872, was the first woman to run for President of the United States of America.

On 24 April 1813 he was appointed Preacher at Bedford Chapel, Charlotte Street, St Pancras, an appointment that may have improved his income and prompted his search for a bride. According to his obituary, he was Morning Preacher at St George’s, Bloomsbury for 20 years. On 23 August 1821 he was also appointed Rector of Tarrant Hinton in Dorset, although it appears he did not move permanently to the parish until about 1833, when he would have been about 63 and the smoky damp London air may have become injurious to his health.

Checking for his baptism, which would have come shortly after his birthday on 27 March 1770, it was found on 29 May 1770 in Ellesmere, as Robert Currey, son of Robert and Magdalen Currey. This tied in with his Oxford entry, regarding his home being “Elsmere”, a Robert Esquire being his father and his age, being matriculated 12 days before his 18th birthday. There were no other children listed for this couple in that parish, so he may have been an only child. but there were several candidates around 1736 to 1740 in Scotland and Newcastle.

A Robert Currey Esq is listed as one of the Stewards of The Royal Humane Society in The Times on 5 April 1827, but whether this is our Reverend, his father, or unrelated, is unknown. The Treasurer of The Royal Humane Society, from whom tickets for a dinner could be purchased, hails from Russell Square in the Fitzrovia estate that Reverend Robert Corry lived at that time.

In 1833 Robert appears to have permanently moved from St Pancras to the tiny village of Tarrant Hinton in North Dorset. Apparently, although the good Reverend had been appointed (and no doubt regularly received his Rector’s stipend) for 12 years, he only moved there after his arrangement with the Bedford Chapel and St George’s Bloomsbury ended. He was now 63. It could be that his lease had run out in Russell Street, or he desired the fresh air of Dorset for his health.

He only lived in his new parish for less than five years. He was buried in Tarrant Hinton on 6 February 1838 age 67. He left a Last Will and Testament, which he drew up on 22 July 1837: “The last Will & Testament of me Robt Corry Rector of Tarrant Hinton Dorsetshire Imprimis I hereby loose all former Wills made by me. 2ndly I give & bequeath to my Son Martin Corry all my household furniture books plate & know in short every thing

known & usually comprehended under the name furniture:— my reason for so doing is that it may be kept together & likewise because make demand some little advantage over former. The Rest of my property ffunded & Leasehold I leave to be equally divided between my three children. I would advise them to make a minute division of the principal but to divide the interest & profits among them till their brother’s death when they will receive a future addition. I hope they can live together as long as is expedient & under the same roof with their Mother if possible. I also hereby appoint my Son Martin Corry to be the sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament As witness my hand this twenty second day of July in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and thirty seven — Robert Corry — Tarrant Hinton 22nd July 1837.”

It looks like the Will was signed by Robert Corry, but not witnessed. So his only named son Martin Corry had to have the Will Proved, after tracking down a couple of people who his father once dealt with and were familiar with his father’s handwriting.

So, what do the above two documents tell us? For a start Robert tells us that he has three children, although he only names one, Martin. We know from the Oxford Alumni that Wilkins Martin Gell Corry was the only son to follow in his father’s footsteps at 52 around Yateley July 2017

So, at some point, between 1833 and 1837, our Martin dropped the “Wilkins” from his name, a change that his father seemed happy about and, by the time of his marriage in1846 he had replaced the “Gell” with “De Winton” to his surname.

Now, we ask, who were the De Wintons? Good question. The Yateley Society seem to imply that Martin came from a family of some substance based in “Straw Hall, County Carlow”. Well, there is evidence of that, by Martin’s own hand: he declares on his marriage announcement that that is where his Irish residence is upon his marriage at Donnybrook near Dublin. So what do we know of his movements since starting his studies at Oxford on 3 June 1833?

He was listed at Brasen-nose College among the Commoners in 1835 and was still being listed by 1845, 12 years a “student” without passing a single qualification!

On 9 May 1840, however, the Gentleman’s Magazine published this notice from the Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors: “Orders have been made, vesting in the Provisional Assignee the Estates and Effects of the following persons on their own Petitions: “Wilkins Martin Gell Corry, late of Fifehead, Dorsetshire, Esquire – in the Gaol of Leicester.”

There are three Fifeheads in Dorset all of them in the north of the county, like Tarrant Hinton. The London Gazette follows the story some four months later.

Statute as Follows: “At the Court-House Leicester on 8 August 1840 10 a.m.: “Wilkins Martin Gell Corry formerly of Fifehead, Dorsetshire, occasionally residing at different Hotels at the west end of this town, London, and late lodging at No 12, Hannover street, Hannover square, Middlesex, Esquire.”

There is no indication of what his sentence was, although he was in Leicester Gaol from 9 May until 8 August, awaiting trial with no sign that his debts were going to be settled.

What of his widow and sisters, who their father hoped in his Will that Martin would keep together under the same roof? Louisa Corry was buried in Tarrant Hinton on 23 February 1841 age 58. Winton Corry of Straw Hall, Co Carlow was issued. The original copy is stored in Dublin National Library of Ireland, Genealogical Office as Ms.107, p241. Straw Hall was one of several properties owned from at least the 1820s by Col. Henry Bruen (1789-1852), MP for County Carlow for the Tories and later the Conservatives for 36 years from 1812, including the period 1840-1852. Bruen temporarily lived at Straw Hall in 1845 while his main home, Oak Park, was being rebuilt and his daughter Harriet made Straw Hall her main residence after her marriage. So it is possible that Bruen rented the place out to Wilkins

Corry for a short period, 1842 to 1846, although no online documentary evidence of any arrangement has been indexed.

Corry v Parlby On 9 March 1846 Martin Corry was still officially calling himself Wilkins Martin Gell Corry, and was resident at Straw Hall, as the case of Corry v Parlby: Plaintive Wilkins Martin Gell Corry; Defendants John Alexander Parlby, Frances Kennett and Anne Copeland, Ref C14/495/C39 (documents held at Kew National Archives) assures us.

On that day Wilkins Corry wrote to The Right Honourable John Singleton Baron Lyndhurst of Lyndhurst in the County of Southampton Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, pleading a Bill for a complaint against the three Plaintiffs.

John Alexander Parlby (1769-1849), was a Justice of the Peace who lived at Stone Hall, Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon. His father Thomas Parlby (1725-1802) was a master mason who earned his fortune during the expansion of Plymouth Dockyard in partnership with his brother-in-law James Templar. The other two defendants were not so easily traceable, but Frances Kennett was the son of Anne Parlby Kennett and her husband Robert Kennett, and Anne Copeland was the daughter of John Copeland, the only surviving immediate relative of one of the executors of Thomas Parlby’s Will.

It appears Robert Corry purchased from Henry Kennett, one of the five children of Anne Parlby, the income from a lease in a house in Prospect Row Rotherhithe that was tied up in Thomas Parlby’s Will of 1799, supposed to share its dividends among his daughter Ann Kennett and her children until the residue passed to the last survivor. The executors of that Will, George Templar and John Alexander Parlby had invested the monies from the property in the purchase of some £3818.11s.11d in 3% consolidated annuities and £1050 in new 4% Bank Annuities in their own names deposited with the Bank of England. The Bill asserted that an Indenture dated 14 April 1825, made between Henry Kennett, then of Rose Cottage Brompton Middlesex, and Robert Corry of Russell Place Fitzroy Square, witnessed by George Twyneham and

Augustus Hayward attornies of the King’s Bench, by which Henry Kennett contracted and agreed the sale to Robert Corry of the annuity or yearly sum of £35 during the lives of Wilkins Martin Gell Corry, Catherine Eliza Corry and Emma Louisa Corry, the son and daughters of the said Robert Corry and the life of the longest liver or survivor of them for the sum of £500. Furthermore, Wilkins Corry claimed that the annuity, due to be paid in equal quarters at the Dining Room of the Inner Temple between 10am and 12 noon on the 14th of January, April, July and October each year hadn’t been paid for the past 8 years, since Henry Kennett’s death on or about 7 October 1837, his Will dated 2 March 1827. Kennett’s Will was administered by his wife Ann Agnes Pitcairn Kennett and John Copeland. As part of the Bill, Corry requested that the Books of the Plaintiffs be examined to confirm that payments had been made and then ceased. For his father’s £500 paid in 1825, the Corry family had only received 11 years of the annuity amounting to £385, the arrears adding up to £280; we know that Catherine Eliza Corry lived until after 1891, so in her lifetime she could have expected to have received the largest portion of a total interest of £2310.

Only the Bill survives, so we do not know if the case went to trial, was thrown out for lack of evidence or was settled out of court.

Corry joins the Irish Nobility The Heraldic Calendar (a list of the Nobility and Gentry), published by William Skey in Dublin on 2 January 1846, page 19, shows a single line entry: “Corry, De Winton, Straw Hall, Carlow.”

January 1846 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook, Dublin South and was performed by one of her relatives Revd JFG Fortescue. She was 21, while the groom states to have been 25, although we now know he was actually 31. The Fortescues from Belvedere, Dublin, were a wealthy family with connections to cousins such as the Earls Fortescues and the Viscount Ebrington of Gloucester.

I don’t know what the Fortescue family thought of Martin De Winton Corry, but remember my opening paragraph recounting John Anstruther-Thompson referring to “Martin de Winton-Corry” as “Spicey Bill”? The Yateley Society believed it to be a simple reference to a popular song about someone who gave great attention to his “toggery but wiped his nose on his sleeve”. In light of what we have found out about him, I think that Anstruther-Thompson was even more subtle than that, working in the near-pun “curry” on his name (perhaps knowing his grandfather’s “Currey” antecedents), and “Bill” alluding to Martin’s discarded first name, which is a usual contraction for people called “William” or “Wilkins”.

The De Winton name There is an ancient family based in Brecon, Wales called De Winton. They believe they can trace their ancestry back to a Nicholas Winton, a Norman born before 1100.

This original’s grandson was called Wilkyne de Winton, born about 1130 in Llandw, Glamorganshire. Over the years the forename became corrupted to “Wilkins” and became a surname. Walter Wilkins MP (the Liberal member for Radnorshire from around Yateley 2017 July 59

1835 until his death in 1840) changed his and the family name to De Winton by Royal Licence on 6 July 1839. They were a wealthy Whig family, who made a fortune in banking in England and trading in India in the 1700s. There is no known connection between the De Winton and Corry families.

Maybe Martin Corry simply corrupted the name of his inheritance in Tarrant Hinton to make his name sound grander than it was?

The Corry inheritance Which brings us to wonder what happened to Robert Corry’s household goods, bonds and leaseholds, passed into the care of his only son Martin, in order to keep a roof over his widow and daughters? We have seen earlier that an annuity that Robert purchased to benefit his children was not paid after 1837.

Robert appears to have purchased and rented out some glebeland in Tarrant Hinton, from 1823, shortly after his appointment as Rector. Considering he paid 13 shillings tax on his nice house in Fitzrovia, the 13 guineas’ tax paid annually (21 times as much) on this grazing land must have meant it had a substantial value.

Was Martin a gambler? Did he make bad investment choices? Why was this single man of leisure incarcerated in debtors’ prison only two years after inheriting wealth that his father was able to use to support his family of five in relative comfort for 24 years, yet appears to have disappeared in less than two years? Did Martin marry into the Fortescue family to gain some form of dowry?

There is no census record come to light in 1851 for the family. They appear to be of no fixed abode, imposing it seems on different friends or his wife’s family for the first twenty years of their marriage. in 1859 Margaret Corry gave birth to her daughter in 60 around Yateley July 2017

Margaret Corry is shown as an infant at the foot of the list. As there are no other children in the household, we can assume that Mary College was part of the travelling Corry contingent.

Their host, Rear-Admiral Henry Jenkinson (1790-1865) was the eldest son of LtGeneral John Jenkinson who began his naval career as a midshipman in 1806 in HMS Royal William at Spithead, transferring soon after to the 36-gun Décade cruising Bermuda, The Channel and Irish stations, moving onto the 74-gun Venerable taking part in the unsuccessful Walcheren Expedition 1809 in the Netherlands before receiving his commission as Lieutenant in 1810. Thereafter he spent 30 months in the frigates Clyde and Inconstant, then back to battleship Impétueux. He was promoted to Commander in 1812, age 22, in the sloop Jasper. After two years of command vessel, he advanced to Post-rank in 1814, a Captain at only 24. He was retired on half-pay in 1846 as Captain, promoted in retirement to rear-admiral in 1862. He had married Elizabeth Lucy Theresa Acland (1794-1857), daughter of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland in Devon 1823.

There must be some family connection as Margaret Lucy Fortescue’s older brother Thomas Dyke Acland Fortescue (1821-1865) formerly Captain of HMS Phoebe died in Malta, his sole executrix being Erskine Fortescue of Woodview, Donnybrook, County of Dublin, Margaret and Thomas’ mother. as baronets of Columb John near Broad Clyst, Devon, prominent landowners in Somerset, Devon and Somerset from 1752 to 1919 (9th to 12th baronet, currently the 17th baronet is Sir Dominic Dyke Acland).

Yateley Hall The Collett family owned Yateley Hall before the De Winton Corrys, a house that had often been let out to military families. Henry Parker Collett, born in London in 1805, took on his father’s business as an attorney with Wimburn & Collett at 62 Chancery Lane, in 1841. The success of his business allowed him to take early retirement during the 1840s, having amassed a substantial fortune. Around the early part of 1846 the family moved to Yateley Hall in Hampshire where the final four children were born.

Tragically the couple suffered with two stillborn daughters on 13 October 1848 and 6 May 1851. Henry also had a house at 4 Brunswick Terrace in Brighton, where he died on 27 March 1855. That was followed by the death of his wife on 14 September 1856 at Yateley Hall. Henry’s Will, which was made on 27 July 1854, was proved on 10th May 1855 less than two months after his death, whereas his widow’s Will was proved nearly five months after her death on 9 February 1857.

In an extract from the diary of E. E. Lloyd dated 16 November 1856 there is a suggestion that some unpleasant news was received from the home of a relative of Mrs Henry Parker Collett which “appears to be a very nasty business”. That now seems likely to have been a dispute concerning the Will of Henry Parker Collett in view of the fact that an article in The Times on 24 January 1857 related to a Prerogative Court hearing about the death and the Will of H P Collett. Later that same year there were still outstanding issues with the estates of Henry Parker Collett and his second wife Mary Ann Collett, as displayed in the following notice published in July that year: “Pursuant to a Decree of the High Court of Chancery, made in a cause wherein Cecil Mary Collett [the eldest surviving child of H P Collett] and others are plaintiffs [her siblings], and Mary Ann Collett [their mother], since deceased, and others, are defendants, and in a cause wherein Cecil Mary Collett and others are plaintiffs, and Robert Cornelius Dixon and others, are defendants, the creditors of Henry Parker Collett, late of Yateley Hall, in the County of Hampshire, esquire, who died in or about the month of March 1855 are, by their solicitors, on or before the 7th day of November, 1857, to come in and prove their debts, at the chambers of the Master of the Rolls, in the Rolls Yard, Chancery Lane, Middlesex, or in default thereof they will be peremptorily excluded from the benefit of the said Decree. Wednesday, the 11th day of November, 1857, at twelve o’clock at noon, at the said chambers, is appointed for hearing and adjudicating upon the claims — Dated this day 24th July 1857.”

Society believe they have proof of purchase after his death in 1885. This report gives his full name, with his forenames switched around and the addition of “de Winton”, we can now prove that Robert Corry and Louisa Harmar’s first-born child on 26 October 1814 was indeed the Martin Corry that we were looking for. Did he merely lease the Hall on an advantageous deal to make it habitable? Did Margaret his widow inherit enough on his death to buy the Hall and, after 39 years of nomadic life, finally settle down into a permanent home of their own?

The Fortescue family Who were Margaret Lucy Fortescue’s family? Her father Matthew Fortescue (17861852) was the son of Captain Hon. Matthew Fortescue and Henrietta Archer. He married Erskine Christie (1790-1868) daughter of James Christie (c1760-1803) of Durie and Mary Turner Barclay-Maitland on 12 October 1811, after marrying in Scoonie, Fife in September 1811. The Guggisbergs Ethel and Sylvia Guggisberg were the daughters of Brigadier General Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg (1869-1930) and Ethel Emily Hamilton Way (1876-1922), a British diplomat who was granted a no damages Decree Nisi divorce on 9 August 1904, Final Decree 27 February 1905 (Petition filed 4 January 1904 for their mother’s affair with clothing salesman/wool merchant Benjamin Alvarez (1873-1935)).

“Ethel” was born in 1898 as Nancy Florence Ethel Violet Guggisberg (1898-1989), and her sister Sylvia Rowena “Ena” Gordon Guggisberg (1899-1979) in 1899. Neither girl married and they lived together most of their lives as wealthy independent women, although Ethel once worked as matron of a nursing home, Ena appears to have never had an occupation. They had an elder sister, Juanita Dorothy Helen Georgie Guggisberg, born Woolwich on 30 May 1897, but she died at the same place five months later on 4 November.

Guggisberg remarried actress and soprano singer (Lilian) Decima Walker-Leigh, (nee Moore) (1871-1964) in 1905. She had also “been wronged” in matrimony and

had petitioned for divorce from former cast member Cecil Ainslie Walker-Leigh on 11 July 1901 after five years of marriage, decree final granted on 2 June 1902. I believe she had one son, William Esmond Omerod Walker-Leigh, who emigrated to Brazil in 1958 after retiring from the Royal Navy. Four of her sisters were also performers and she made her debut with the D’Oyley Carte Opera Company aged 17. She was the last surviving cast member of an original D’Oyley Carte performance, as well as in a Gilbert & Sullivan role. She accompanied Guggisberg on many of his trips abroad, co-authoring one book with him, but often returned to England to perform until her last London stage performance in 1914. However, while her husband re-enlisted for the war, she entertained the troops in France throughout the war by starting up entertainment clubs for troops on leave from the Front and encouraging performers to come and play to them. She had been a founding member of the Actresses’ Franchise League in 1908 and was active in the Suffragette Movement. In 1918 Lady MooreGuggisberg was made CBE for her war-time services. She also received the Médalle de la Reconnaissance française, a “medal of French gratitude” awarded to civilians in 1917. After her husband died in 1931, she returned to acting, appearing in the film “Nine Till Six” in 1931. At the start of WW2 she was in Paris, so started up the British Leave Club in 1939, fleeing only a few hours before the Fall of Paris on 11 June 1940, leaving a sign on the door saying, “Temporarily Closed”.

The divorced Mrs Ethel Guggisberg nee Way appears to have run off to India with defrocked Church of England Minister Ernest George John Moore (1870-1937).

He was the Vicar of Holy Trinity, Amblecote, Stourbridge, Staffordshire from 1900 until 1904, later teacher at a boys’ school in India. They had five children, the first, Sheila Moore (1905-1985) in Ambala, India, followed by Judith Moore (1907-1990) in Sanaur Kasauli, India, Bettie Moore (1910-1973) England, Eileen Moore (1912-1982) Lewisham, and Allardice Moore (c1914-??) England. Ernie Moore, having returned to England, worked for the Department of Labour, ending up as manager of Bermondsey Employment Exchange. He married twice more.

I don’t know much about their mother’s affair, but Alvarez was born and lived in Mile End, in the East End of London, and married Mile-End born Rebecca Toledano alias Beatrice “Beattie” Daniels (c1874-1925) in 1896 and had seven children. “Beattie” was the daughter of a professional musician and banjo maker, “Joe Daniels”, born as Joseph Joshua Toledano in Hull, Yorkshire in 1844. Their marriage survived, so it is possible that Alvarez was used as a stooge to effect the divorce in a failed attempt to protect the reputation of Reverend Ernest Moore?

In the strange way that coincidence makes people’s lives so fascinating, Joseph’s father “Israel Toledano”, Joshua de Moses Daniels (1788-1874), was also an entertainer.

He was engaged to entertain Lord Egerton at his house. Egerton’s daughter Sarah Solomon Egerton (1806-1859) fell in love with the dashing musician and they eloped, despite his being nearly 20 years older than her; she converted to Judaism and they married in Bevis Marks Synagogue in London in November 1836; they had 8 children between 1831-1845. Sarah was born in Ellesmere, Shropshire, where Robert Corry lived and was raised, and the daughter of Philip Egerton, described in his will probate 1816 as yeoman of Nantwich, Cheshire. The Egertons were related to the Fortescues, the family of Margaret De Winton Corry’s mother.

Sarah Ann Gardener (1877-after 1943) Sarah Gardener was Margaret De Winton Corry’s lady’s maid from before 1900 and after her death was the co-executor of her will in 1943. She was a Cotswold Yeoman’s daughter from Bisley in Gloucestershire, with four sisters in a 13-room farmhouse in Middle Lippiatt, so her father had to have help from his brothers to run the farm.

The eldest daughter married a local farmer, while the other sisters had to move away. One of Sarah’s servants in 1881 was a local girl called Ann Harmer. Just another coincidence?

On Saturday morning 17 June 2017, The Yateley Society herby celebrated Civic Day, in guiding sightseers around Yateley Hall, Yateley’s only Grade II* listed building.

The Yateley Society last showed off the Hall way back in 1991, after Lacken Construction had renovated the building following 40 years of neglect while being used as a private convent school.

In 1991 we had access to the whole building. Now that the building has been converted into offices, only a handful of rooms on the ground and first floors are worthwhile visiting. around Yateley 2017 July 71

Even so, simply being within the grounds was an unforgettble experience.

and helpful assistance of Adrienne Milburn, the office manager at Outbound, the current occupiers, and Yateley Town Council.

Also essential were the two volunteers from the Scouts who served hot and cold drinks and cakes to the visitors, and the Yateley Lions, who marshalled the car park and prevented people being hurt by the two main hazards, the moat and the Ha-Ha.

Yateley Morris Men, who had two other dancing commitments on the day, spent almost two hours in searing heat, providing entertainment for what we hope will, with subtle modifications, become a lasting annual tradition.

Of course, the tours wouldn’t have been possible without Society members Roger Coombes, Abi Roper, Allison Hewitt, Peter Tipton, and Colin Broadley, as well as Yateley WI Chair Frances Rogerson, keeping the succession of tours informed about Yateley Hall.

The Hall has a long history, with origins deep in medieval times. the “canal” being a residue of the original moat which surrounded the single span communal hall. This 74 around Yateley July 2017

was converted into a farmhouse in the 16th century. Vestiges of the original roof timbers of the ancient hall can be found in the attics.

The very first documentary evidence dates from 1567 when the house “Colcatts� and 4 acres was owned by Andrew Smythe.

By 1655 the house had passed to Oliver Gery and, after his death in 1658, Widow Gery lived in it until at least 1679. A prospectus was drawn up between 1671 and 1682 referring to “a new brick house, strongly built which cost above sixteene hundred pounds the building”, surrounded by “a large deep moat with a very strong new draw bridge”.

Henry Foxcroft was a London lawyer, who lived here from 1702-1732 and he rebuilt much of the exterior of the house. He was followed by Rumney Diggle, another London lawyer, who owned the house from 1732 to 1754.

its parkland setting. His son Thomas occupied the house until his death in 1794. Either Thomas Diggle, or John Halhed and his family, added the ballrooms at the south end of the building. John Halhed closed a road to the west of the Ha-Ha in 1797 and changed the name to Yateley House.

The Colletts changed the name again to Yateley Hall and planted the oak trees lining the drive. After a contracted row over Henry Parker Collett’s Will, the house was in dispute until 1866 when Martin De Winton Corry bought the house for £5000 and the farmlands for £4365.

Daredevil Chairman of Hart DC Gerry Crisp filled in another dent in his bucket list, raising over ÂŁ1000 in just three weeks drumming up sponsorship for Aerobility by doing a Wing Walk on Friday 26 May. The former Yateley Town Mayor was deputy chairman of Hart last year and knew he had to give up an unprecedented four-year term as Mayor of Yateley in order to devote the time demanded by his new role.

Aerobility, based at Blackbushe Airport, are devoted to enabling disabled people to learn how to fly in specially adapted planes, beginning on a flight simulator. around Yateley 2017 July 81

This series of articles on the history of Yateley is a look back into the past of ordinary people who were born (or more exactly baptised) in this month in centuries past, their families and historical context. I hope you find it interesting.

The Parish Records of St Peter’s are a superb online source published by The Yateley Society which we can use. The baptism record ends about 1904, so 100 years ago is not yet available. There were baptisms in July 1717 and July 1817 who were adding to Yateley’s story.

There was only one baptism this month 300 years ago, Mary Searl, daughter of John and Dorothea Searl.

Mary Searl (1717-??) was baptised on Sunday 7 July 1717 daughter of John (c1690buried 22 November 1739?) and Dorothea Searl (c1695-buried as Dorothy Searl on 16 January 1757/8?). implied gentleman or near gentleman status. He may have been buried “according to the Statute� on 20 February 1683/4. Thomas and Amy had the following children: (1) Anne Searl baptised 2 May 1665 daughter of Thomas Searl at the Horns (2) Thomas Searl baptised 19 January 1666/67 son of Thomas Searl The earliest Searle to be buried in Yateley was Robert Searle of Cove on 14 May 1638, followed by William Searle on 9 November 1657.

Amelia Coles

Amelia Coles baptised in Yateley on 22 July 1817, she was the eldest daughter of William (1792-1865) and Rose Coles (1796-1866), labourer from Yateley.

Her father William Coles was born 4 February 1792 and baptised on 4 March 1792, the illegitimate child of William Groves and Sarah Coles (1768-1836).

His mother was the daughter of William and Ann Cowlds, baptised as Sarah Cowlds on 28 June 1768. She had her first child in Yateley when she was 19, Thomas Baily Cowls alias Coles baptised on 13 January 1788 illegitimate son of Sarah Cowls alias Coles.

I have not found a marriage for William Coles and Rose so far, we only have her admittance on the census records that she was born in Hansworth, Middlesex.

Richard Williams (c1755-1835) married Catharine Watson (1756-1808) on 23 August 1779 in Yateley. Catharine was probably the Kitty Watson baptised 11 May 1754, daughter of John and Catharine Watson. Catharine Watson had an illegitimate child Jane Watson in 1777.
