Yateley Editorial

This magazine is in need of more contributions after a promising start a year ago. We will produce future issues when we have accumulated enough material. Hopefully a magazine wil apprear from time to time.

There were no contributions at all from readers in December for either January or February issue, and have one article currently in preparation. Except for ‘special editions’ the number of readers has fallen steadily from over 600 (in February and April) to 130 last issue.

I decided to produced this issue with what we have available. As the issues are no longer reliably current, we have dropped the “What’s on” section.

We live in hope of a quarterly page from The Yateley Society, and occasional substantial articles from popular contributor and journalist Jenny Cole, including a piece for the March/April issue covering the new Café 47 on Church End Green. So fingers crossed.

Yateley We’ve had a lot of mixed weather in the past couple of months including a little snow, a lot of rain and extended days of frost.

At Wyndham’s Pool, the new dam is completed and is a vast improvent on the old one.

The pond was frozen but I did see this magpie (Corvidae pica) searching

for insects among the fallen leaves in the grass.

Of course, the winter bird we are all so familar with is the robin or robin redbreast (Erithacus

rubecula). The bird is a member of the chat family and is always a joy to see. There are said to be 6.7 million breeding pairs in the UK, defying the declining trend of small birds.

The eastern grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are a native of North America, and are a serious invasive species which has effectively killed off the native red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). Said to have been introduced in 1876, the grey squirrels have no natural preditors to keep them in check, and brought with it parapoxvirus that the red squirrels had no resistence to and, in direct competition for limited food resources, the bigger, heavier greys outcompete the red squirrels, who run out of food and therefore body fat sooner and find it harder to survive the winters. The greys were introduced to Continental Europe in 1948 via Italy and aggressively claiming new territory, especially as they rapidly recover from futile euthanesia culls.

I spotted this female blackbird (Turdus merula) on a sawn off tree stump by the Blackwater. The resident polulation all over Britain number over 5 million pairs, swelled by another 10 to 15 millions overwintering pairs.

In Sandhurst before Christmas we had the rare glimpse of a domesticated hawk.

Tapestry depicts King Harold with a hawk. He was a keen falconer and apparently owned the largest collection of books on the subject in Europe.

Perhaps it is telling, the difference between the cultures of Saxon England and the Normans, but it is said that the first Norman king to learn the English language and to read books, was King John, who was around Yateley 2017 January 9

born exactly 100 years after the Norman Conquest.

Incidentally, strictly speaking, a falconer flies a falcon, while a hawker or austringer (an old German word) hunts with a hawk or eagle. In the early history of falconry, a falcon meant a female falcon, a hawk or hawke referred to a female hawk and the male birds of either species was referred to a tiercel or tercel, as the males tend to be smaller by about a third than the female.

The Harris’s Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) is a native of America, spreading from Southern Texas and Arizona to South America and being introduced in the 1970s. It is one of the most common hawks now used for hawking in Europe. In the wild they naturally hunt in packs and have a hierarchy similar to a pack of wolves, so adapt readily to hawking.

Escaped Harris’s Hawks are recently reported to be breeding in the wild in Britain.

At Swan Lake last week the surface was frozen solid and many birds had left for running rivers or deeper water unlikely to freeze over, but the sun had melted the ice where it was able to work its magic for a while.

I did see this mute swan (Cygnus olor) coming into land on the ice and slide along the ice into the melted water at the end.

Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is a member of the rails family and means “little hen”.

They can be found amost everywhere near water, in the countryside or towns, but are rather shy compared to ducks and swans. The UK population is about a quarter million pairs, boosted by another 60,000 from winter visitors.

DarbyGreen & Frogmore Social Hall

The Darby Green & Frogmore Social Hall, located in Frogmore Road, is a community hall funded by the Millenium Project and the National Lottery.

The new hall replaced an old wooden hut that served the surrounding villages for over 60 years. A group of volunterrs and trustees help run and maintain the activities and services offered at the hall.

They are a registered charity (No. 301799) and proud to be self supporting, are not run by Hart or Yateley councils, and they want to remain that way.

They are always looking for new members to join their committee. Meetings are held bi-monthly. If you are interested in being a member and helping to run and maintain the hall for future generations, don’t hesitate to contact them through their wesite www.dgfsocialhall.co.uk They have a wide range of activities booked in. On Mondays they have Revival Keep Fit, Art Club, Line Dancing, Brownies and Rainbows.

New Year, New

Beginnings

British folk customs have many traditions about New Year and this article will attempt to cover a few of them. One of the major traditions, reported from all over the country, are the first visitors we have for the new year.

First Foot

The first visitor to enter a house on New Year’s Day is often known as “First Foot”, although there are many local variations. In the Isle of Man, the first foot is known as the Quaaltagh and it is important that he be a male of dark complexion, anyone else brings bad luck. In Yorkshire the first foot is called the Lucky Bird. He is supposed to influence the fortunes of the house for the next twelve months.

In Scotland, the first-footing that occurs just after midnight is maintained vigorously; he is to bring gifts of food, fuel or money, and may carry a branch of evergreen. No one must leave the house before he arrives and he must enter the front door and be welcomed with food and drink as an honoured guest. In more remote parts of Scotland the first-footer is not to speak or be spoken to until he has put a piece of peat or coal on the fire, or at least stirred the fire, before loudly proclaiming his presence and being loudly welcomed in return.

New Year Resolutions

In Mesopotamina, Babylonians would promise their gods at the start of each year to repay their debts and return items they had borrowed during the old year.

The Romans started each year by making promises to the god Janus.

In the Mediaeval times, the knights of old used to renew their vows to chivalry by taking the “peacock vow” immediately after the Christmas season each year.

Judaism has a similar tradition, during their New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through to Yom Kippur, to right wrongdoings during the year, both seek and offer forgiveness.

It has been documented that by the end of the Great Depression 25% of American adults made New Year’s resolutions, by the start of the 21st century, 40% did.

What resolutions are popular?

Popular resolutions are: Improve physical well-being: to eat healthy food, lose weight, exercise more, drink less alcohol, quit smoking, stop biting nails, and eliminate bad habits Improve mental well-being: think positively, laugh more often, enjoy life more Improve finances: get out of debt, spend less, save more, make investments Improve career: work harder at current job, get a better job, start own business Improve education Improve self: become more organized, reduce stress, be less grumpy, manage time, be more independent Take a trip somewhere, try a new adventure Volunteer to help others, be more neighbourly, practice life skills, give to charity, volunteer to work part-time in a charity organization Get along better with people, improve social skills, enhance social intelligence Make new friends Spend quality time with family Settle down, get engaged or get married, have children Pray more, be closer to God, be more spiritual Be more involved in sports or different physical activities Spend less time on social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.)

Why do resolutions fail?

Most fail New Years’ Resolutions by setting themselves unrealistic goals (35%), while 33% didn’t keep track of their progress and a further 23% forgot about it. About 10% claimed they made too many resolutions.

A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol, involving 3,000 people, showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study’s participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends. Pipson’s Lane Pipson’s Lane is now a footpath diagonally running north-northeast to south-southwest, connecting the B2772 Reading Road with Handford Lane at the junction with Mill Lane at the north end and Dungells Lane at the south.

The route of the path is clearly of some antiquity. The course of the lane can easily be traced on the 1844 Tithe Map, once again running from the junction with Mill Lane, past the church (marked in red) and pastures (marked in green) belonging to Yateley Manor, and then along the edges of arable fields (marked in yellow) until reaching 16 around Yateley January 2017

I don’t know the origin of the name of Pipson’s Lane, but a Yateley parish placename of Le Pipson was mentioned in the Crondall Customary of 1567.

By the time the first Parish Birth, Marriage and Death Registers for St Peter’s Church, Yateley (formerly merely a sub-chapel of Crondall) are recorded, in 1636, some 70 years later, there is no mention of any family of

Pipsons. Perhaps Le Pipson was the name of a house or farmstead at one or other end of the lane.

Except for the last century or so, Yateley’s local economy was always an agricultural one, based on woodlands, furze gathering for fuel, arable crops, such as barley, and animal husbandry. The importance of keeping animals segregated from arable crops and the need to drive animals from the water meadows near the Blackwater to take advantage of the grazing on the common, meant there had to be clearly defined pathways for the regular herding of stock from the heights of the common at the south end of Dungells Lane down to the meadows of Yateley Manor, the ponds on Yateley Green or water meadows on the north side of Mill Lane. It is possible that Pipson’s Lane may at sometime in the distant past have marked the boundary between the fields of Yateley Manor (or Yateley Place as it was once known) and Yateley Hall (the Calcotts of old), as both main buildings appear to contain elements that date from medieval times.

Our walk this month starts out at the Reading Road, where there is plenty of parking in Mill Lane or around Church End Green. Perhaps take advantage of the new Café 47 that has recently opened.

The first landmark we come to is Pipsons Close, a modern development to the east of the path. The stretch between the Close and Brown’s Lych Gate, our next important landmark, is surrounded by a verdant canopy, with the path surface quite around Yateley 2017 January 19

poor and muddy from the thick mulch of fallen leaves and encroachment of the headgerows on either side.

During the summer, this stretch of the path is generally thick with stinging nettles.

memorial for her family and the gateway has a number of family member memorials affixed to it.

The walk is barely blessed with much in the way of views, usually only hedges and high fences obscuring domestic gardens.

As we pass so close to the churchyard, it is well worthwhile entering through the lych gate and exploring the area.

Churchyards are quiet places for contemplation and Yateley is blessed with a rare example of a wooden grave memorial, The Simmonds’ Grave Memorial, dating from around Yateley 2017 January 25

around 1843, which has been restored several times over the years (1906, 1954 and 1996) and, unfortunately, it appears

to be in need of more desperate repair work now, which is the temporary nature of wooden memorials.

Hawley Manor, which was a part of the Parish of Yateley prior to 1844.

Up to Victorian times, simple memorials made of wood were commonplace in churchyards, so any survivors are well worth maintaining.

to maintain the memorial for their future.

Leaving the churchyard once more by the Brown’s Lych Gate, turn right and continue southward.

This walk was made during November and the ground was then still covered in a carpet of leaves, the trees clinging onto their autumn clothing prior to the first frosts.

In places, the hedgerows on either side are quite thick, with a variety of different plants vying for both position and light.

At the end of the churchyard a footpath from Cricket Hill Lane connects from the east, via Old Welmore and Beaver Lane, presumably the Brown family took on their way to Church services.

After crossing Cranford Park Drive, Pipson’s Lane now becomes Parkfields for about a hundred yards or so until it narrows down into becoming a simple footpath again.

At the end of the Parkfields public road, there are three forks. The left continues as Parkfields, leading rown to the remaining

Then we come to the first of a number of east-westorientated roads which cross Pipson’s Lane, Lawford Crescent.

The continuation of the lane we are following is just over the road, the gardens on each side moving from Lawford Crescent to St Peter’s Gardens on the laft and Rosary Gardens on the right, emerging into Cranford Park Drive.

This is a much busier road that the others, being one of the three main access roads leading into the Manor Park Drive estate.

emerge into the next criss-cross road, Farm View.

Once again, Pipson’s Lane merges with another metalled road: Farm Close, with a short stretch of footpath leading into Hall Farm Crescent.

This is where the path deviates from what has essentially been a straight line up to this point.

The next stretch of footpath between the houses of Hall Farm Crescent are a few metres to the right and proceeds due south for a time, then takes a 90o turn to the right, before another turn towards 32 around Yateley January 2017

the south-west, skirting the end of the cul-de-sac that is Lucas Close.

All this stretch has been recently resurfaced

by Hampshire County Council.

Then there is another slight bend to the left leading down directly to emerge at the end of Pipson’s Lane onto Handford Lane, with Dungells Lane continuing on from there, all the way up to the common.

Christmas Cakes at Westfields Infants

On 9 December, the parents and children of Yateley’s Westfields Infants School decended on the WISPA Christmas Fair.

Prior to the start of the entertainment and activities, the cakes from the Cake Competition were on display in the entrance hall of the school. Clearly many children and, it looked like a lot of help from their skilful parents, made cakes for the competition and donated their tasty products to the cake stall for sale afterwards.

with is set in winter, or at least a frozen fantasy winter wonderland.

There were some fantastically colourful and mouthwatering entries, ranging from fun Christmas trees, gingerbread robins with cherries and gingerbread men with buttons, a crowd of snowmen, Christmas decorations and a lovely assortment of attractive-looking cup cakes, which are ever popular.

Unfortunately they had pretty well all gone by the time I finished. Still, I’ll make sure I’m in time for a slice of the action next time!

Carole & Mike’s Wedding in Worcester Parents whose children attended St Peter’s Junior CE Controlled School may remember teacher Carole Edmondson who taught there for a dozen years and also the first couple of years after the revamped Cranford Park Primary School opened.

She has been working in Worcester for the last couple of years and on 20 December 2016 married Mike Leydon, also a teacher. They are presently looking for a house in Scotland and we wish them well in their future together.

Former teaching staff from St Peter’s joined in the celebration of their marriage.

New look Yateley Utd start unlucky

Last Saturday the new look Yateley team hosted high flying Horsley but fell just short in a tight game. We can feel a tad aggrieved we got nothing from the fixture. The story of the season really but at least we’re now giving teams a real game.

We started really brightly and took a deserved lead when Will Neville hit a great strike into the bottom corner after only 3 minutes. We kept pressing with the lively Craig Smith and Chris Allen running at the visitors and only the final ball was lacking.

However, as with the season so far, in a matter of minutes the game had turned and we

were behind. A good first goal from the visitors forced the equaliser but some hesitant defending caused our own problems for the second.

We ended the half on the back foot as we struggled to get to grips with the visitors’ 3 man midfield and at times lost our shape. HT 1-2 The 2nd half we reorganised to a 3-5-2 but all the planning went out the window when we went down to 10 men after 48 minutes when Chris was sent off for dissent.

We had to go back to a back 4 and needed to stay in the game.

Brad was unlucky when his free kick hit the bar and at the other end Gilesy pulled off one double save and another close-range save to keep us in it. The visitors also hit the post.

Horsley then went down to 10 players when they also had a player sent off, but they got the crucial break soon after when we lost possession of the ball and the Horsley striker went clean through to slot home, 1-3.

We kept going though and

Leggy had a header against the bar and Craig shot straight at the keeper but you sensed it wasn’t going to be our day.

We were given a life line when Sam Munden headed home a Brad Smith corner which caused a frantic last 5 minutes.

We pressed and had a chance right at the death when Will

headed over at the back stick.

All in all we battled really hard but we conceded soft goals at the wrong time. Lots of positives though but really disappointing defeat at the same time

Yateley Past People 200& 300 YEARS AGO

This history of Yateley series of articles is a look back into the past of ordinary people who were born (or more exactly baptised in this month in centuries past and their historical context.

I hope you find it interesting. The Parish Records of St Peter’s are a superb online source published by The Yateley Society which we can use. The baptism record ends about 1904, so 100 years ago is not available, and they only go back to 1636, so 1616 is out of the question.

But we do have December 1716 and 1816 and January 1716/17 and 1817 to look at.

1716 December

On Christmas Day 1716, St Peter’s Church witnessed the baptism of Anne daughter of Thomas and Mary Collier, the only one recorded that month.

Anne Collier Anne Collier was baptised on Friday 25 December 1716, daughter of Thomas and Mary Collier. Anne’s parents were married on 9 November 1707 in Yateley as Thomas Collier, son of James Collier and Mary Inden, and Mary Mason, daughter of John Mason. She was the youngest of five children: (1) Susannah Collier baptised 14 November 1708 Yateley, buried 3 September 1731, age 22 (2) Elizabeth Collier baptised 18 January 1709 Yateley, possibly married Thomas Bunch 27 April 1735, Yateley, or also possibly remained single and was buried 29 March 1746 in Yateley as Elizabeth Collier (3) Thomas Collier baptised 25 February 1711 Yateley, possibly married Anne Brown on 3 May 1738 Yateley (4) Mary Collier baptised 2 July 1714 Yateley, possibly married Robert Marlow on 1 March 1730/1 in Yateley (5) Anne Collier baptised 25 December 1716 Yateley Anne’s parents Thomas Collier and Mary Mason were both Yateley born and bred. Thomas Collier was baptised on 12 April 1684, and could trace his family back to his grandfather James who was born before 1620, and his father also James baptised 30 March 1645 in Yateley. James Collier Junior married Mary Inden in Yateley on 27 March 1665. Thomas’ siblings were: (1) James Collier born around 1679 outside Yateley, buried 26 May 1707, Yateley.

(2) Daniel Collier baptised 23 June 1681 Yateley.

Anne Collier’s great grandfather was James Collier, born around 1620, before St Peter’s baptism register began. James senior was buried in Yateley on 11 August 1664. We believe his second wife’s name was Mary (Mary Colliar widow buried 16 April 1684), and his first wife Katherine (wife of James Collier buried 7 March 1648/9 in Yateley). James’ children: with Katherine: (1) James Collier baptised 30 March 1645, buried 16 May 1702 with Mary: (2) Mary Collier baptised 11 December 1851, with her twin Elizabeth. Buried on 19 December (3) Elizabeth Collier baptised 11 December 1851, with her twin Mary. Buried on 15 December (4) Mary Collier baptised 5 May 1653 (5) Ann Collier baptised 11 January 1654/5. She married Christopher Savage in 1684 (6) John Collier baptised 19 June 1656 Yateley. Buried 6 May 1712 (7) Richard Collier baptised 27 January 1658/9 Anne Collier’s mother, Mary Mason, was baptised 8 February 1676/7, eldest daughter of John Mason of Hawley. Anne’s grandmother may have been called Susannah, as a “Susannah wife of John Mason” was buried in Yateley on 15 August 1695. John Mason was buried on 6 January 1712/13, age 63. John and Susannah Mason had five children that I am aware of: (1) Mary Mason baptised on 8 February 1676/7, married Thomas Collier on 9 November 1707 (2) John Mason was baptised on 24 March 1678/9 (3) Alice Mason was baptised on 11 December 1682, but buried aged 4 on 2 February 1686/7 with her sister Susannah, presumably victims of disease (4) Susannah Mason was baptised on 2 August 1686, but buried aged 6 months on 2 February 1686/7 with her sister Alice, presumably victims of disease (5) Anne Mason was baptised on 26 October 1691 What happened to Anne Collier? She may have married Joseph Taylor in Yateley on 1 October 1740, when she was 24, but the Taylors do not appear to have stayed in Yateley. Or she may have remained unmarried, and buried in St Peter’s on 22 July 1792 as an Ann Collier age 76 (although she would have been only 75). around Yateley 2017 January 53

(7) Charles Goddard, son of Richard and Hannah Goddard, baptised 22 December 1816, labourer family from Hawley (8) Charlotte Elizabeth Grove, daughter of Tobias and Mary Ann Grove, baptised Friday 25 December 1816, family were butchers from Yateley Sarah Austin Sarah Austin, daughter of James and Jane Austin, baptised 1 December 1816, family were labourers from Hawley. Life was hard for farm labourers in the 1820s and ’30s, Sarah lost her little brother James in 1820 when he was only 18 months old, and her mother in 1826 when she was only 9 years old. Sarah married William Sumpster in Yateley on 18 October 1838. William was the son of Benjamin and Jane Sumpster born in Sherfield-on-Loddon around 1810.

It looks like Sarah age 6 might have been William’s daughter from an earlier marriage.

In later census records, Sarah A Sumpster says she was born between 1835-1838.

Working as a live-in servant was difficult for a married couple, and in Frimley Sarah and William were separated, living three doors apart. By now, daughter Sarah A had struck out on her own, working as a housemaid to a headmaster in Chelsea in 1861 and St George’s Hanover Square in 1871.

Eliza Cusins Eliza Cousins, daughter of Edward and Sarah Cousins, was baptised as “Eliza Cusins” on 1 December 1816, family were labourers from Yateley. Eliza’s parents were married in Yateley on 30 May 1805 as Edward Cousins and Sarah Vickery, and had eight children: (1) Sarah Cousins baptised 6 October 1805 Yateley, born on 4 August, about nine weeks after her parents’ wedding (2) William Cousins baptised 19 April 1807 Yateley, born on 10 April. In 1841 he was an ag lab living in Elvetham with a wife Sarah, five years his junior, and a child, also Sarah, age 1. In 1851 William was a garden labourer and they had added a son Charles and William to their brood. in 1861 William was a widower, still a gardener’s labourer, Charles was a carter and William junior an ag lab, while William’s daughter was housekeeper. William’s wife Sarah died between April and June 1858 (3) Jane Cousins baptised 12 March 1809 Yateley. She was an unmarried servant age 43 in the 1851 census, in Lee, Kent, also a witness at the marriage of brother Edward in Southwak in 1846 (4) Charles Cousins baptised 31 March 1811 Yateley. He was an ostler, who moved to Coulsdon, Croydon, Surrey, where he lived in the same cottage from before 1851 to after 1891. (7) Edward Cousins baptised 16 May 1819 Yateley. He worked as a warehouseman in Southwark when he married Mary Mitchell in 1846, their children were John 1847, Elizabeth 1848, Agnes 1850, Edward 1855, John 1858, later he worked as a beer house keeper until by the age of 70 he was a gardener. Died in Croydon 1901 (8) Henry Cousins baptised 17 June 1821 Yateley. Henry worked as an ag lab for William Paice, farmer at Mnley Farn, in 1841, age 15. Hewas a warehouseman working with brother Edward in the late 1840s when he married Ann Elizabeth Collier in Southwark in 1849, children Henry 1850 and Charles 1852. Ann Elizabeth was a Yateley girl, daughter of Charles Colyer, bricklayer and Frances Kent, who had 12 children between 1821 and 1840 in Yateley Ann Bedford Ann Bedford, daughter of John and Elizabeth Bedford, baptised 1 December 1816, a publican and innkeeping family from Yateley, who kept the Cricketers Inn on Cricket Hill. Her father John was the first born of Thomas Bedford and Dinah Bartlett; as an illegitimate boy John was baptised 30 March 1788 son of Dinah Bartlett & Thomas Bedford (they married on 2 August 1788 in Yateley).

John married an Elizabeth outside Yateley around 1810, when he would have been about 22. Their children were: (1) Dinah Bedford baptised 1 March 1812 born 3 February 1812 in Yateley. She married a John Last in Islington and they had a daughter Frances Helena Last.

They moved back to Yateley before 1881, after her mother died, to help her sister Elizabeth run the beerhouse. John Last was buried in Yateley 5 June 1879, age 67.

When her sister died in 1885, Dinah ran The Cricketers for a while. Her daughter Frances married Henry John Sellwood, Church End blacksmith, in 1882, but he died in 1889. Frances Selwood took over the running of The Cricketers when her mother was too old to run it, with her widowed mother in law Susannah Selwood and a couple of blacksmiths as boarders. Dinah Last was buried in St Peter’s on 22 March 1902 age 90. Frances Selwood was buried in Yateley on 8 January 1910 (2) John Bedford baptised 10 December 1814, father a publican (3) Ann Bedford baptised 1 December 1816, father a publican (4) Sarah Bedford baptised 1 November 1818, father a publican, living with parents in 1841 census in Yateley. She married watchmaker Joshua Burton in Clerkenwell on 2 June 1846, later a Superintendent Constable and Police Inspector, when she described her father John as a farmer. Their children were Francis Joshua Burton 1850 (stayed at “The Cricketers Inn” in 1861), Henry Herbert Burton 1851, Joshua James Burton 1854, and Felix Burton 1859. Joshua Burton died in an asylum in Henley on 2 January 1864 leaving effects under £200. In 1881 she lived in around Yateley 2017 January 57

Deptford as an annuitant with son Francis, a goldsmiths’ traveller, and in 1891 she was housekeeper to John Giles (Caroline Bedford’s widower) in Blackwater with her son Joshua James Burton, a provisions dealer. Sarah Burton died at 227 Southgate Road, London but buried in St Peter’s on 23 December 1894 age 76 (5) Elizbeth Bedford baptised 28 January 1821, father a publican. She remained unmarried, and moved away from Yateley to work as a milliner, returning to live with her mother at “The Cricketers” after her father died in 1863. buried 2 December 1885 in Yateley, age 65 (6) Caroline Bedford 15 February 1824, father an innkeeper, in 1841 a servant age 18 with Tippin Rigby’s family at Yateley Lodge, at the foot of Cricket Hill. She married John Giles, a Yateley-born railway porter, in 1844 in Reading. They had five children from 1847-1860 in Reading and Reigate, before returning to Blackwater in 1881 (John Giles was a railway signalman). She died in 1889, Hartley Wintney district age 65 (7) Thomas Bedford 3 December 1826, father an innkeeper. He became a station master, married Elizabeth around 1857 in Suffolk, and had 4 children (8) Charlotte Bedford 21 May 1828, father an innkeeper, buried 25 May 1828, an infant 1841 Yateley, near Castle Bottom, Beer House [possibly “The Anchor”?]

Elleanor Clark Elleanor Clark, daughter of Richard Clark and Ann Winter, baptised 8 December 1816, labourer family from Cove, later Hawley. Richard and Ann married in Yateley on 20 October 1812. Richard was born in Cove and baptised in Yateley 20 June 1792 son of Richard Clark and Ann Grinham who were married 14 January 1782.

Their children: (1) Elleanor 8 December 1816 Yateley, Cove (2) William Clark 13 September1818 of Hawley labourer (3) John Clark 8 April 1821 labourer Hawley (4) Thomas Clark 20 April 1823 Hawley, labourer (5) Sarah Clark 2 December 1827 Richard and Anne of Hawley Elleanor’s father Richard Clark of Hawley was buried 2 July 1828 age about 40 by Coroner’s Inquest. This is possibly due to an agricultural accident, as steam driven devices were being introduced at the time. Harriet Paice Harriet Paice, daughter of William and Ann Paice, baptised 15 December 1816, labourer family from Yateley, who later farmed Minley Farm. She was the eighth of eleven children, nine of them girls! Her parents, William Paice and Anne Hood were married on 2 October 1802 in Yateley. Married Elizabeth Paice 17 June 1830.

A grocer, he married Esther from Swallowfield, Wiltshire about 1830, children Samuel (baker, born Eversley 1835), William (baker, baptised Yateley 16 July 1837), Hester 6 September 1840 (2) Sarah Pain Paice baptised 12 August 1804 Yateley daughter of William & Ann Paice, born 18 July 1804, married farmer John Youmans from Hawley on 27 February 1832 Yateley, children Mary 1833, John Youmans 1834 Hawley, John Youmans 1836 Cove, Mary Ann Youmans 1839 Hawley, Maria Youmans 1840 Hawley and William Youmans 1842 Hawley. Sarah Youmans was buried 12 November 1883 in Yateley District Church of St John’s Cove, age 79 (3) Mary Paice baptised 28 December 1806 Yateley, daughter of William & Ann Paice, born 28 December 1806. James married Frances Spreadborough in Yateley on 30 December 1839, and had a child John Ruffell born in 1840. Frances, the duaghter of John Spreadborough and Lucy Livard and baptised in Yateley on 25 June 1820, was buried in Yateley on 10 January 1841, age only 21. James was an up-to-25 ag lab living on his own in the 1841 census. It is possible that James remarried on 26 June 1841 to Martha Murrell. Both James and his son John were buried on the same day, 26 February 1843, ages 26 and 3 respectively. Several local families were affected by smallpox, and the chances are that both fell victim to this then common disease.

James’ father Richard Ruffell (1788-1875) was married three times; firstly to Mary Goodchild (1780-1813) on 14 October 1802, in Yateley. Mary was buried on 24 October 1813 age 33. They had one child: (1) John Ruffell baptised in Yateley on 1 January 1803 son of Richard & Mary, Hawley On 28 November 1815 Richard Ruffell, widower, married Ann Smith at Ash Parish in Surrey. Together they had four children in seven years: (2) James Ruffell baptised at Yateley on 22 December 1816 son of Richard & Ann, of Hawley, father a labourer (3) Thomas baptised 9 February 1820 (twin), buried 2 June 1822 age 2 years 3 months around Yateley 2017 January 61

(4) Richard Ruffell baptised 9 February 1820 (twin), buried 20 February 1820 (5) Robert Ruffell baptised 23 October 1823 Anne Ruffell died in the Workhouse and was buried in Yateley on 26 October 1823 age 36, just days after her fourth child was baptised.

Richard married for the third time on 10 September 1826 in Yateley, to 16-yearold Maria Spreadborough (1810-1879). So, James Ruffell, our 200 year ago Yateley resident, had a short life. but his family is fascinating, as we have seen from his father, Richard. I have been unable to find out anything about his mother, Ann Smith, but what about his two wives? Frances Spreadborough was the eldest daughter of John Spreadborough and Lucy Livard.

They married in Yateley as was once researched and transcribed as “Lucy Livard and John Spread Or Borough” on 18 November 1816. Richard Goddard was possibly Richard Hawkins, illegitimate son of Sarah Hawkins and Richard Goddard on 27 March 1786, born 20 March 1786. Incidentally, Sarah Hawkins had another illegitimate child David Hawkins in 1787 with James Ruffell.

Charles Goddard was with his parents in 1841. He married Mary Maynard on 30 April 1842 in Yateley, but his new bride was buried less than five months later on 11 September 1842, age 24, described as from Hawley. Mary Maynard was the natural daughter of Martha Maynard, baptised on 1 March 1818 in Yateley.

He married for a second time to Jane Triggs 21 April 1845 Yateley, but then they disappear from the records.

Charlotte Elizabeth Grove Charlotte Elizabeth Grove was baptised on Friday 25 December 1816, daughter of Tobias and Mary Ann Grove. Tobias Grove and Mary Ann Town were married in Yateley on 1 March 1810.

Thomas Chantry On 30 January 1716, St Peter’s Church witnessed the baptisim of Thomas the son of Thomas Chantry in Yateley. it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that England around Yateley 2017 January 65

changed from the old agrarian year, ending on 25 March, so January, February and most of March were called the same year as the preceding year.

On 29 June 1712 Thomas Chantry of Finchampstead and Ann Netherclift of Frimley were married by licence. Maybe this couple married in either Finchampstead or Frimley but lived in Yateley. On 28 September 1720 a Thomas Chantry was buried in Yateley. There is no certainty whether this was the father or the son, but usually registers note if children are buried and I would have thought mention would have been made if a 3-year-old infant was buried. The family seem to have left Yateley around 1720.

1817 January

There were five baptisms in January 1817: Sarah Charlton, Benjamin Bunch, George Brown, William Maynard and John Girdler.

Sarah Charlton On 12 January 1817, St Peter’s Church witnessed the baptism of Sarah the daughter of John and Maria Charlton in Yateley. Father’s occupation was given as servant.

John and Maria Charlton had a daughter Jane baptised 5 April 1815, when he was described as a horse keeper. Another Charlton child, Elizabeth, was baptised 7 March 1819, but the parents are transcribed as “Thomas” and Maria Charlton, occupation “house keeper”, so this could be down to a simple mistake, or mistranscription due to poor handwriting. The only local marriage of a John Charlton was in Frensham, Surrey on 29 December 1812, a marriage to Meria Mitchel.

On 29 August 1847 Sarah Charlton and Jonathan Sawyer, a miller, were married in the parish church of St Mary, Lambeth. Both were of full age, able to sign the register, living together at 10 Saville Place, Lambeth.

They remained in Lambeth, where she had four children. She died in Lambeth between July and September 1872, age 55, ref 1d page 272.

On 8 September 1805 William Bunch and Elizabeth Bunce were married in Yateley. William Bunch was baptised in Yateley on 21 March 1778, son of William & “Elizabeth Bunce”, possibly a cousin called Bunch. On 4 April 1816 Thomas Brown and Sarah Mulford were married in Yateley.

Sarah was baptised 17 December 1797 in Sandhurst, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas Mulford (1756-1809) and Hester Clifton (1772-1848). This was Thomas Brown’s second marriage, the first to Hannah Alexander on 8 April 1799 in Yateley, this was after the couple had an illegitimate child. George’s father Thomas Brown died 1 April 1852 in St John’s, Cove. His mother Sarah Brown nee Mulford died in Farnborough on 5 January 1875.

William Maynard On 26 January 1817, William Maynard was baptised, the son of Richard and Ann Maynard of Hawley, labourer.

William’s father Richard Maynard was the illegitimate son of Ann Maynard born in Frimley 7 April 1788 and baptised in Yateley on 10 May 1788 On 11 April 1812 Richard Maynard (1788-1865) married Anne Parfett (c1796-1869) in Yateley.

John Coles On 26 January 1817, John Coles was baptised as John Cole, the son of Thomas Bailey and Priscilla Girdler Cole of Yateley, labourer.

On 20 December 1812 Thomas Bailey Coles (1788-1828) married Priscilla Girdler Baker in Yateley. Thomas Baily Coles was the illegitimate son of Sarah Cowls alias Coles baptised on 13 January 1788 in Yateley, born three days earlier.

Sarah Cowls was baptised as Sarah Cowls 28 June 1768 daughter of William & Ann Cowls. As well as Thomas Bailey Coles in 1788, she may have had another illegitimate child, William Coles born on 4 February 1792 and baptised a month 70 around Yateley January 2017

later, possibly the father was William Grove. Sarah never married and was buried 31 January 1836 age 68 in Yateley.
