Tring Athletic History

THE EARLY YEARS Tring Athletic Youth FC was formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed towards the purchase of 3.4 acres at Miswell Lane. The cost of providing changing rooms, fencing, equipment and ownership of the ground was approximately 2,000, a lot of money in those days. Committee members, players and friends carried out most of the work, including the building of the changing rooms and during the early days the team had to play on another pitch in Tring. Originally the Club was formed to provide football for youngsters aged u nder 21 and despite playing against adult teams we won many trophies in the West Herts Saturday League during the early 1960's including the Division 1 title 3 times in 5 years.

THE 70's/80's We then went through a lean spell and in 1971 decided to scrap the upper age limit and drop youth from our name. Many former players returned, and we had another successful period during the early 1970's. Over the years many fine players appeared in our shirts, and many went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the Miswell Lane ground was sold to the Council, and we had a bad time and but for the efforts of a few loyal members would have certainly folded. The Reserves were disbanded, and the First Team dropped down to Division 3. We decided to turn to youth again and gradually forced our way back up through the league and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Division and running a Reserve side again.

SOUTH MIDLANDS - THE 90's In 1988 we joined the South Midlands and as a result gained senior status with the Herts FA. In 1989 we entered into a 3-year ground sharing arrangement with Isthmian League side Tring Town moving back to Miswell Lane in 1992 where the Reserves had continued to play. We established ourselves in the South Midlands by gaining promotion to the newly formed Senior Division in 1993. In 1994/95 the First Team reached the final of the Senior Division Cup whilst the Reserves were finalists in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running. In 1996/97 we led the Senior Division throughout the season and looked favourites to win the title. However, some unlucky defeats in the last few games saw us drop down to 3rd place. In addition to our impressive league form we also had some terrific cup runs during that season, reaching the semi-final of the Herts Charity Shield and winning the prestigious St. Marys Cup, the first time we had ever achieved such heights. In 1997/98 we just missed out on the Senior Division title by the narrowest of margins to New Bradwell St Peter - a goal difference of just 2! We finished the season in fine style, suffering just 1 defeat in our last 21 league games which included a terrific run of 14 straight wins for which we won a special award from the League. The Reserves went one better by winning their league by a clear 10 points and in doing so achieved 100% success in their league games at home. In 1998/99 we picked up our first major South Midlands trophy when we won the Senior Division Cup. We also won the St Marys Cup for the 2nd time in 3 years. In the league a terrific run of just 1 defeat in our last 28 games saw us finish in 3rd place, 4 points behind champions Holmer Green. During this magnificent run we went 15 hours without conceding a goal. The Reserves also did well finishing 5th in their first season in the top division. The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. During the summer we spent over £50k on building new changing rooms and extending the social and bar area. That meant a total of over 90k had been spent on improving the

facilities at Miswell Lane since 1993. To mark the opening of the new changing rooms we played a Watford XI in front of a huge crowd of about 1,000 people. The game was Refereed by Graham Poll and Graham Barber. We also expanded on the playing side with a third team being set up to particularly attract young players, a veterans side for ex-players and a Ladies side. The season turned out to be the most successful in the Club's history. In addition to winning the Senior Division title by 11 points we also reached 5 finals. We won the Herts Charity Shield (beating Potters Bar Town 2-1), Herts Senior Centenary Trophy (Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in its inaugural year (Bedmond Sports & Social on penalties after a 1-1 draw). We were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Letchworth in the Senior Division Cup and although we also reached the St Marys Cup final it was never played because of the backlog of fixtures. Our achievements were recognised by the South Midlands who awarded us the Houghton Regis Cup for achievements in outside competitions and Mick Eldridge, Ray Brimson and Richard Vincent were voted Managers of the Season. In 60 games in all competitions, we lost on only 6 occasions, a remarkable achievement. Our other teams also enjoyed success with the Reserves reaching the Final of the Herts Intermediate Cup and the A Team in their first season finishing runners up in the West Herts Division 3.

THE NEW MILLENNIUM After finishing the old millennium in style, we continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title, and a newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts Charity Shield for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final, and the B Team won the sporting award.

SEASON 2002/03 - More success followed as we capture the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12 major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

SEASON 2003/04 - Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, Under 18's and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

SEASON 2004/05 - New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase for the first time.

SEASON 2005/6 - The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league.

SEASON 2007/8 - Winners of Herts Charity Shield - We defeated Weylwn Garden City in the final of this County Cup to win the trophy for the 3rd time in our history. Match played at The County Gr ound, Letchworth. This was the first trophy for the new management team of Manager, Phil Casserley, Assistant, Terry Nightingale, and Coach Julian Robinson.

SEASON 2008/9 - Treble Winners - SSMFL Challenge Trophy Winners - Athletic defeated Chalfont St Peter by 3-2 at Harefield United's ground to lift this trophy in their first appearance in the final of this competition. SSMFL Premier Division Cup Winners - Athletic defeated St Margaretsbury by 2-0 at Colney Heath's ground to lift this trophy in their first appearance in the final. St Marys Cup Winners - Athletic defeated Leverstock Green by 2-1 at Hemel Hempstead's ground to lift this trophy for the 4th time.

SEASON 2009/10 - After last season's tremendous cup haul, this year the First Team finished without a trophy however they finished third in the league, the highest position in the Club's history. The Club also received the higher ground grading required should we be in a promotion position, so the foundations have been laid for the future. The managers and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in season 2010/11. The B Team did however win some silverware for the Club when they won the Sir Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town's ground.

SEASON 2010/11 - The First team finished in the highest position, runners up to Chalfont St Peter in the SSMFL Premier Division, in their history so far. They also won the St. Mary's Cup for the fifth time, defeating Leverstock Green 2-1 after extra time. The season finished with a 2-0 defeat to Royston Town in the South Midland Floodlight Cup Final.

SEASON 2011/12 - Julian Robinson and Tony Armitage took charge in the summer of 2011 knowing that many of last year’s successful First Team had departed. A great re-building job was undertaken with a very credible 6th position achieved in the league and defeats by the odd goal in 3 cup semi-finals. A good influx of younger players with a year’s experience behind them will hopefully provide the base for a good start to next season. The Reserves also had a good season blooding a large number of players and again have a young group of players to move forward with. The Ladies had their best ever season winning their league and reaching the County Cup Final for the first time where they were not disgraced when defeated by Arsenal Ladies. Our Youth team also won their league and will play in a floodlit midweek league next season.

SEASON 2012/13 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League we finished just below halfway, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi-final of the Premier Division Cup and were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. Midway through the season Tony Armitage left and Ian Richardson stepped up from the Reserves to assist Julian Robinson. Long serving, Stuart Stedman, was appointed coach to assist Colin Phillips with the Reserves who again had an excellent year bringing many players through to the First team. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first t ime in the Club's history. The "B" team and Youth teams were well run whilst unfortunately the Ladies team withdrew from their league through lack of players.

SEASON 2013/14 - The Reserves were promoted to the SFL Premier Division having finished second on goal difference to Royston Town. The Club was also awarded the Dave Pugh Trophy for hospitality shown to officials. SEASON 2014/15 - The First Team finished 10th in SSMFL fielding a young side, the Reserves found the SFL Premier Division tough but had some great trips to senior clubs and start season 2015-16 in the North Division. The U18's had a tough year but a number of players progressed through to the Reserves and First Team. The U15's also found life tough having gained promotion the previous year. The First team completed their season losing by a single late goal to Hemel Hempstead and gave a credible performance in the Final of the St Mary's Cup in front of a big crowd.

SEASON 2015/16 - The First Team won the St Mary's Cup for the 5th time defeating Sun Sports 2 -0 and finished mid-table in the SSMFL Premier Division. The Reserves did the "double by winning the Suburban Football League North Division and also the Challenge Plate Competition defeating Cray Athletic 2-0. The U16's just missed out on winning the league in the final season as a group of players.

SEASON 2016/17 - First team won the St Mary's Cup, were finalists in the Herts Charity Shield, 5th position SSMFL Premier Division and reached the 4th round of the F A Vase. Reserves were finalists in the Suburban Football League Challenge Trophy. "A" Team were Runners Up in the West Herts Premier Division whilst the "B" Team were the Champions of the West Herts Division 2 and also Winners of the Sir Stanley Rous Cup. The U18 had a respectable mid-table finish.

SEASON 2017/18 - The First Team reached the last 16 of the F A Vase for the first time losing unluckily to Melksham Town in front of a crowd of 1,236. The "A" Team set a Club record winning the West Herts Premier League and Cup double and only losing one game that being the final of the Herts Junior Cup.

SEASON 2018/19 - The First Team were Runners Up in SSMFL Premier Division. The Reserves were Suburban Football League Central Division Champions, and the "A" Team were Herts Junior Cup Winners and West Herts Senior Cup Finalists.

SEASON 2019/20 - This will go down in history, both in the nation's and the club's, as a season that was not completed due to a worldwide virus COVID-19. When the season was drawn to an early close the First Team were in second place in the Premier Division and it was also memorable, in so far as, a complete team, management and players, departed and a new Committee was formed following an Extraordinary Meeting in February 2020.

St Marys Cup Winners

MATCH REPORT

Leverstock Green put the cap on a fine season for the club by lifting the St Mary’s Cup for the second time on Monday afternoon. A first half free kick from Chris Blunden was enough to win the match and the first silverware of the Fergus Moore era. It was a close match, as would be expected given where the two clubs finished in the SSML Premier Division and how tight the league meetings had been this season.

Tring had more of the ball for the opening five minutes of the game, but it was Leverstock who had the first near miss in the 8th minute, as Richard Ennin hit a shot from the left edge of the penalty area which was touched onto the post by Tring keeper Eric Negraru. Three minutes later Ennin made a strong run into the box and put the ball into the six -yard area, but it was cleared. In the 13th minute Rio Beach went on a mazy run before laying off to Blunden, whose shot went just wide.

The chances kept on coming for Leverstock, with Ennin having a shot from the edge of the box blocked on the line in the 15th minute, and Blunden having a free run at goal two minutes later but not quite getting a clean strike on his shot, allowing Negraru to save. In the 19th minute Dan Pett took the ball off a defender and set up Blunden for another shot which went just over the

angle. On 27 minutes it was George Mitchell-Gears’ turn to have a shot, which Negraru turned round the post. Alvin Kyeremeh got on the end of the resulting corner but couldn’t keep his shot under the bar. There was another near-miss in the 34th minute as Ibrahim Nageeb shot over after a run from Kyeremeh.

Leverstock were well on top by now but hadn’t yet found the goal which their bright attacking play had deserved. In the 37th minute they had a chance when a foul on Nagheeb gave them a free kick 20 yards out in prime shooting position. Inevitably it was Blunden who stepped up to take it, and equally inevitably his superb strike curled over the wall and into the net for his 20th goal of the season. Negraru got a hand to it but only succeeded in helping it into the net as Leverstock finally took a long overdue lead.

Tring could have had an equaliser two minutes later from a corner, but a headed clearance on the goal line from Beach kept the ball out and sent Leverstock into the break with a 1-0 lead after an excellent half.

The second half was a different affair as Tring finally started pushing forward and creating some danger. On 54 minutes a long ball forward went over the head of Dan Weeks, leaving Godlove Oppong through on goal, but Austin Byfield pulled off a superb save from point-blank range and Oppong put the rebound over the bar. In the 65th minute Guiseppe Delgaudio got on the end of a cross with an acrobatic overhead kick that went just wide. By this stage Tring were on top as Leverstock were pushed back, but their shooting was off target as efforts flew high and wide.

In the 70th minute Tring felt they might have had a penalty when Mitchell-Gears brought down Leo Farruch with a tackle that earned the Green player a yellow card, but the tackle was adjudged to have been outside the box. Farruch was the main threat over the closing minutes, shooting into the side netting on 85 minutes and putting a dangerous ball across the face of goal two minutes later, but Leverstock held out through six minutes of stoppage time to claim the trophy. Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica has been missing through injury for the last few games but came off the bench in the 87th minute and played a vital role in holding the ball up field.

Rio Beach earned the Man of the Match award for a fantastic display at the back, and skipper Dan Weeks lifted the St Mary’s Cup, which Leverstock had previously won in 2018. A trophy was well-deserved for all the effort that the management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Darren Bonfield have put in this season.

It won’t be long before these two sides will meet again, as they have been drawn together in the first round of the Herts Charity Shield, to be played on July 22nd.

Pre-Season Action Round Up 15th July

Leverstock Green played their first home pre-season friendly and came out on top by a 52 scoreline against Pitstone and Ivinghoe on Saturday.

Rio Beach brought a save out of the visiting keeper in the second minute, and Leverstock had the ball in the net in the 6th minute, but Ryan Hennessy’s shot was ruled out for offside. Leverstock were having much more of the play, and finally took the lead in the 24th minute. A corner was not cleared, and as Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica’s shot was blocked across goal, Dan Weeks pounced to shoot home from six yards. A second goal arrived within a minute as Stefanoaica shot home from the edge of the box.

George Mitchell-Gears hit a shot just over the bar in the 33rd minute but added his name to the scoresheet in the 41st minute. Danny May’s low free kick was deflected across goal off a defender and Mitchell-Gears had the space to control the ball and slot it home. In first half stoppage time Stefanoaica shot home from close range for his second and Leverstock’s fourth goal of the game.

Fergus Moore made a number of changes at half time, and Pitstone pulled a goal back in the 54th minute with an excellent dipping shot from the edge of the box. Three minutes later Leverstock re-established their four-goal cushion as Ryan Carruthers scored an impressive solo goal, trapping the ball outside the box before driving into the box and smashing home a shot.

Leverstock continued to push forward but couldn’t add any more to their tally, and a close-range header three minutes from time pulled another goal back for the visitors as the game ended 5-2.

The previous Tuesday night Leverstock had travelled to Tithe Farm for the second time in three days, this time to face Rayners Lane. Luke Beckwith was the goalscorer in a 4-1 defeat, and there was a big blow as Ethan Mooney was injured in a collision with the metal pitch surround and required surgery for a 4-inch gash on his knee.

The Development Team, managed by Steve Hale, played their first pre-season friendly on Saturday, which resulted in a 2-2 draw against Essex Olympian League side Manford Way.

Pre-Season Action Round Up 8th July

Leverstock Green came away from their opening friendly against Broadfields United with a 3-2 win.

A squad consisting of a few familiar faces and a selection of young trialists was comfortably holding a 2-0 lead until the home side fought back to level but snatched a late winner.

Chris Blunden put Leverstock into the lead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute after George Mitchell-Gears had been brought down. Blunden made it 2-0 in the 54th minute, taking the ball round the keeper to score from a narrow angle.

With six minutes remaining Broadfields pulled a goal back, and within a minute the scores were level with a stunning long-range strike. However, in the 87th minute one of the trialists, Ryan Hennessy showed great persistence to force the ball home from close range for a 3-2 win. Hennessy was one of several trialists who impressed enough to sign forms after the game.

Some of last season’s regulars were unavailable, but Austin Byfield, Rio Beach, Dan Weeks, Brad Robinson, George Mitchell-Gears, Luke Beckwith, Ryan Carruthers and Chris Blunden all featured.
