Nick Payne Sponsor www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dawnpayne44 In 2017, Dawn was diagnosed with breast cancer and successfully underwent chemotherapy. Sadly, following a reoccurrence, she passed away on 28th August 2019. We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up or fight like hell. Unfortunately, at the young age of 44, Dawn lost her battle but by only working together can we win the war. £1000 will kit out a PhD student with everything they need to beat cancer sooner, helping to train the researchers of tomorrow.

https://kitaid.net A few words about KitAid KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd). After two weeks in Tanzania, a flame was lit in Derrick’s heart, and he was on a mission to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed children playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags. Twenty-one years on, KitAid has lots of volunteers and to date we’ve sent out 900,000+ kits to children and adults in 55 different countries across the world.

How to donate

If you’d like to support the KitAid cause, the easiest way to donate your unwanted football kit, in order for us to find it a new home. Alternatively, if you don’t have any unwanted kit, but would still like to support us, we’re very grateful for any donations which will help to fund our annual costs as well as support other partnership charities where possible. We thank you for all your support.

In working in some of the most under-privileged countries around the world, The Football Association is no stranger to seeing the impact the donation of something as simple as a shirt or a pair of shorts can make. KitAid has brought an enormous amount of pleasure and enjoyment to young and old alike through the gift of football kit and has shared the spirit of British clubs and the England team with communities in all corners of the globe. We are proud to be associated with KitAid and wish them all the best in their endeavours for the years to come. Jane Bateman, Head of International Relations, The Football Association

London Lions History

In the summer of 1995, the players and officials of Maccabi Association London (MAL) decided that they had reached the limits of Sunday football and that a new challenge was required. The Hertfordshire Senior County League was a popular choice, and the club made its debut in the 95/96 season under a new name of MALEX. Four years later the club had made many friends but had narrowly missed out on promotion from Division 1 in each season. During the summer of 1999, the club revised its management structure, and decided to change its name to LONDON MACCABI LIONS, whilst retaining its all-Jewish status. Under the management team of Bobby Fisher and Adam Solomons the 1st team lost only three league games that season as they won the Division 1 and reached the semi-finals of the Aubrey Cup. The club grew into one of the strongest teams in the Premier League but had to wait to land its first major honour in 2007 when Lions beat Metropolitan Police to lift the Herts Centenary Trophy. This was supplemented by the Reserves who were also promoted as champions, in 2002, and made it to three Herts Reserve Cup finals, winning one in 09/10. After a decade in the Herts Premier, in 2009/10 now under the stewardship of Tony Gold and Steve Grenfell, Lions won the Herts Senior County League for the first time in the club’s history, winning promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League in the process. The following season – the club’s first in the South Midlands Division One – they added a second Herts Centenary Trophy beating Letchworth Garden City Eagles 3-2 in the final. Lions were able to go on better in 2012/13, winning the South Midlands Division One title and promotion to the heights of the South Midlands Premier Division. The club also made their debut in the FA Cup, winning 4-0 against Clapton. Now just one league away from semi-professional football, it was a tall order for a team missing a number of players who had departed following promotion, and so 2013/14 saw Lions suffer their first ever relegation at the end of a difficult season. Having steadied the ship, the club decided to return to the Herts Senior County League for 2015/16 in order to rebuild. Seeking to promote a new generation under manager Andy Landesberg, there was immediate reward by winning the Anagram Records Trophy at the end of their first season, with most of the starting XI having come through the club’s massive youth set up. We then achieved an unprecedented treble in winning the league, Centenary Trophy and, for the first time, the Aubrey Cup.

The club was welcomed back to Spartan South Midlands League where we have won further honours in the shape of the Division One Cup (2018), Herts Centenary Trophy (2019) and Spring Cup (2021) while threatening to get promotion to the Premier Division before Covid struck. The club was reassigned to the Combined Counties League Division One in the summer of 2021 and we are again targeting promotion to the next step, as well as representing our community with pride. Alan Lee Reporting Leverstock Green 3 Aylesbury Vale Dynamos 2 It was three more points for Leverstock Green on Tuesday night, but it was also another unnecessarily tense finish as visitors Aylesbury Vale Dynamos pulled back two late goals to take the game to the wire after Leverstock had apparently been cruising at 3-0 up. After a quiet start to the game the visitors had the first chance in the 13th minute from a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but Alfie Anderson curled his effort just wide. Four minutes later Dynamos had another chance as Leverstock were caught on the break from their own corner. Abu Khan went on a powerful run through the Green defence and set up Sam Olawele, but his shot was cleared off the line. Leverstock’s first effort on goal came in the 25th minute when Luke Beckwith hit an effort from the edge of the box which went just wide. Leverstock were forced into a chance in the 28th minute when Mikey Havill-Tierney went down injured and had to be replaced by Callum Neal. In the 34th minute the visitors were penalised for a foul by Nathan Brownsword near the corner flag. Brownsword’s protests earned him a sinbin which reduced his side to ten men for the next ten minutes. Leverstock made the most of their period of numerical advantage. Dan Pett delivered the free kick into the box, finding Callum Neal to head home his first goal for the club just six minutes after coming off the bench. It got even better for Leverstock in the 41st minute as Neal turned provider, sending over a cross from the right which found Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica with a header which went in off the post to put Leverstock 2-0 up. Leverstock continued their good form into the second half. In the 51st minute Jayden Newman showed some good footwork on the edge of the penalty area before hitting a shot which deflected wide off a defender. The resulting corner was only headed away as far as the edge of the penalty area, where Beckwith met it with a low drive into the bottom corner of the net for a 3-0 Leverstock lead. Leverstock were well on top at this point, and with Stefanoaica causing havoc on the wing further goals looked likely. However, a lapse of concentration at the back allowed the visitors back into the game in the 72nd minute. Jake Baldwin won the ball on the edge of the Leverstock box and hit a shot which Josh Bowler did well to turn away but was helpless as Jonathan Pascal followed up to net the rebound. Still Leverstock were looking the more likely side. In the 82nd minute Stefanoaica tried his luck from a free kick just outside the box but was denied by a save from keeper Charlie Jones. A minute later Stefanoaica hit a screamer from 30 yards which rattled the crossbar. The game was still in the balance, and even more so in the second minute of stoppage time when the Green defence was caught out again as Abu Khan ran through two challenges before hitting an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box to pull the score back to 3-2. Four further minutes of stoppage time were played as Aylesbury pushed everyone forward, and there were a few moments of panic in the Leverstock box, but they just about held out for another crucial win which takes them within sight of the division’s top six. On Saturday they face one of the sides above them with a visit to Biggleswade United. Leverstock Green (2) 3 (Neal 34, Stefanoaica 41, Beckwith 53)

Man of the Match Dan Pett vs Colney Heath

Nat Connolly vs London Lions

Alan Lee Reporting Biggleswade United 1 Leverstock Green 2 Leverstock Green made it three wins within the space of a week as they travelled to fourth-placed Biggleswade United and came back with three points that saw them leapfrog their opponents into fourth place. Fergus Moore was lacking several players due to injury, but it gave a chance to Joe Sadler, and the 16-year-old marked his first senior start with a spectacular goal. The pitch at Second Meadow showed little sign of the amount of rain that had fallen over the past few days, and the early exchanges saw little in the way of chances. A corner from Dan Pett in the 11th minute found Ryan Carruthers with a free header, but it went just over the bar. Josh Bowler’s first serious action came in the 27th minute, tipping away a long-range cross from Gareth Hunt that seemed to miss everybody in the box. In the 33rd minute Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica beat two Biggleswade defenders on a mazy run into the box before setting up Pett, but his shot was blocked as Hunt got back well. In first half stoppage time a pass from Nat Connolly put Jayden Newman through on goal, but home keeper Tom Wyant did well, coming off his line to save Newman’s shot. The game was goalless at the break, but Leverstock made a strong start to the second half. They could have taken the lead in the 49th minute when Stefanoaica got away down the right and sent over a cross which Newman got on the end of but didn’t make enough contact with his header to divert it on target. However, Leverstock’s play got them a deserved goal in the 53rd minute. Rio Beach did very well down the left and delivered a superb cross, and on the end of it to head home from close range was Callum Neal to score his second goal in two games. Neal’s contribution didn’t stop there. Three minutes later Bowler couldn’t hold onto a cross from Jaiden Irish, but Neal put in a great block to keep out Sam Moore’s effort from the loose ball. Two minutes later the home side were threatening again as Jake Stronge got clear and had a shooting chance but was denied by a great block from Danny May. A second goal was needed, and it arrived in the 64th minute. Newman was trying to get the ball under control on the edge of the box, but it dropped for Sadler, who instantly hit a fantastic strike with the outside of his boot that curled over Wyant and into the bottom corner of the net for a 2-0 Leverstock lead. There should have been a third goal in the 74th minute. Pett played a great ball out of defence to put Newman away down the left, and his low cross looked perfect for Stefanoaica to slide in at the far post, but Wyant just managed to get in his way and the ball went wide. Instead Biggleswade pulled a goal back in the 79th minute. A pass from Mehki Angol put Dave Parkinson through on goal, and he slotted past Bowler to set up yet another tense finish for the Leverstock side. Biggleswade threw everything forward over the closing minutes, which included a full six minutes of stoppage time, but the Leverstock side held firm and were able to keep the ball up field to run some valuable time off the clock as they collected another crucial three points. Leverstock Green (0) 2 (Neal 53, Sadler 64) 1. Josh Bowler, 2. Callum Neal, 3. Rio Beach, 4. Dan Weeks, 18. Ryan Carruthers, 6. Danny May, 7. Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica, 8. Dan Pett, 9. Alan Lee Reporting London Lions 3 Leverstock Green 4 Leverstock Green extended their winning run to four games as they came out on top in an entertaining seven-goal thriller at the Maccabi London Sports Ground on Wednesday night. Given that both Leverstock and London Lions have been involved in several high-scoring games this season, plenty of goals were expected here tonight and so it proved. Leverstock looked lively from the start with Jayden Newman having a run at goal in the 3rd minute, but his shot from a narrow angle was saved by home keeper Nathan Bloohn. At the other end in the 6th minute Josh Bowler had to make a good save to keep out a shot from Felix Shalom. In the 11th minute a great crossfield ball from Luke Beckwith put Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica through on goal, but before he could get his shot away a defender got back to put in a strong challenge which brought some shouts for a penalty, but nothing from the referee. Two minutes later a chipped pass down the left from Dan Weeks was missed by a defender, allowing Stefanoaica to run clear of the defence before delivering a square ball into the six-yard box which found Jayden Newman to shoot Leverstock into a 1-0 lead. However, the game was end-to-end, and in the 24th minute London Lions equalised as Max Kyte lashed home a shot from inside the box into the roof of the net. Three minutes later Leverstock were back in front. Bloohn did well to keep out a shot from Newman, and seconds later kept out a close-range effort from Stefanoaica, but Leverstock’s top scorer got the ball back and ran across the edge of the six-yard box before turning and firing home a superb shot from a narrow angle. Stefanoaica could have added a third in the 30th minute but was again denied by a point-blank save from Bloohn. Leverstock were still in front going into first half stoppage time but could not hold onto their lead. In the second minute of stoppage time a pass from Daniel Creese sliced open the Green defence and put Kyte in to shoot home his second equaliser. Further into stoppage time Leverstock lost Stefanoaica to what looked like a hamstring injury, with Ethan Mooney coming on in his place. Leverstock went in front for a third time in the 54th minute. Rio Beach picked up the ball outside the box, and looked ready to shoot with his left foot, but instead cut back onto his right foot and hit a shot which took a deflection and beat Bloohn into the bottom corner of the net for a 3-2 Leverstock lead. London Lions continued to play their passing game but were finding it hard to get past a disciplined Leverstock defence. With ten minutes to play Morgan Grout, who had made his debut for the Development team on Saturday, came off the bench to make his first team debut. Less than two minutes had passed before Grout added his name to the scoresheet. Beckwith’s pass found him on the edge of the box, and Grout hit a superb side footed shot past Bloohn to make it 4-2 to Leverstock. The game looked won, but there was still more drama to come in a lengthy period of stoppage time. Six minutes of added time had been played when a corner dropped for substitute Jack Mordecai at the far post to volley home a goal to pull it back to 4-3. That could have made for yet another tense finish, but fortunately the referee blew for time seconds after the restart to signal another Leverstock win, which takes them level on points with the teams in second and third place, but with a vastly inferior goal difference. Leverstock Green 4 (Newman 13, Stefanoaica 27, Beach 54, Grout 82)

Alan Lee Reporting Colney Heath 0 Leverstock Green 1 It’s now five straight league wins for Leverstock Green as they came back from Colney Heath with all three points and moved to within two points of league leaders St Panteleimon. There was little between the sides in Saturday’s A414 derby, but Leverstock took an early lead and held onto it for the rest of the game. Leverstock were without top scorer Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica due to injury but welcomed back Luke Durnin into the defence after a spell out injured. The home side had the better of the early play and had a shout for a penalty turned down by the referee. However, it was Leverstock that went in front in the 6th minute with a somewhat soft goal. Dan Pett hit a low shot from the edge of the penalty area which scuffed along the ground and should have been kept out, but keeper Connor Sansom saw it nestle in the corner of his net. Durnin’s return from injury proved to be short-lived, as he went down after making a block in the 19th minute and was unable to continue. Pett took his place in the back four with Ademide Baruwa coming on into midfield. Leverstock had a chance for a second goal in the 23rd minute with Luke Beckwith looking well-placed for a shot, but he laid off to Jayden Newman, who mishit his shot wide. There was another good chance in the 34th minute when a kick from Josh Bowler gave Newman a run at goal, but he laid off to Beckwith, whose shot was blocked by Dom Knaggs. Two minutes before the break Bowler was forced into his first serious save, turning a shot from Ibrahim Camara round the post. Four minutes into the second half Baruwa made a run into the penalty area but his shot from a narrow angle was kept out by Sansom, with the rebound just eluding Beckwith. Seconds later Ryan Carruthers hit a shot just wide. The home side, playing down the slope, had more of the possession in the second half but created little with it. Meanwhile Leverstock looked dangerous on the break, with their best chance coming in the 61st minute when a ball from the edge of his own box by Pett put Newman clear of the defence, but his eventual shot went over the bar. Leverstock still held their lead going into the closing minutes and had to withstand the extra presence of Sansom coming up the field twice for corners, and winning the header both times, but the first one went over the bar in the 87th minute and the second one went wide two minutes later. Sansom spent more of the stoppage time period in the Leverstock half than his own half, but the Green defence held out for yet another narrow win. As well as being a fifth straight league win, it was a third straight away win, and Leverstock still face a further three away games before their next home league match on November 25th.
