Happy New Year everyone! Don't you just LOVE the close of each year and the beginning of a brand sparkly new one? Those days between Christmas and December 31st are perfect for us to reflect on the past year. What we did, what we didn’t do that we’d liked to have done, what we did well, what we could have done better…and the list goes on. On the whole I think my 2011 went pretty well. I went on an amazing camping trip in Idaho which took me way outside my comfort zone, my editing, publishing and ghostwriting business accelerated to the point where I now have to turn clients down due to the workload, and I made excellent progress on a massive self help book launching in May 2012 with chapters by 22 luminaries. After the reflection process I then spend all day on December 31st and January 1st looking at what I’d like to achieve in the coming year. I write down all my goals, however big or small, plus what I might need to do in order to reach them. To support my efforts I make a ‘Vision Board’ by chopping images from magazines which illustrate my goals and sticking them on a large piece of card, positioned somewhere I see frequently everyday. This acts as a point of focus and whatever we give our energy to is what shows up in our reality. I have great fun making my annual vision board, especially the part which involves taking down the old one and realising that everything happened as I wanted it to.

The year to come – 2012 – is an especially exciting one. The Mayans recognise it as a new beginning – the end of one cycle and the start of another. That doesn’t mean the end of the world, but it does mean the end of the world as we know it. So let’s embrace the change and embrace each other throughout 2012 and beyond.

Prize poo A Taiwanese city is trying to clean up its streets - by offering lottery tickets to people who clear up dog poo.

Now get focused on your dreams and goals for the coming year and watch the miracles unfold (but only when you've finished reading the little mag that fits in your bag!).

More than 4,000 people have collected 14,500 bags of excrement since the scheme was launched in New Taipei City.

Keidi Keating

For each bag they turned in, they were given a lottery ticket. A woman in her 50s won the top prize - a gold ingot worth 1,600€.

Editor (of the original little mag)!

Wishing Everyone A Magical And Prosperous 2012 New Year 2012

The scheme, which began in August and was due to end in October, has been so successful it has been extended, and has been credited with halving the amount of dog mess in the city. Smaller gold ingots, worth several hundred dollars, were given to four other prizewinners. A total of 85 people won prizes, including household appliances. Video footage filmed via a headcam - entitled Sense of Flying - has been posted on YouTube and notched up more than 300,000 hits. It shows him jumping from the top of a mountain in Stryn, rocketing through a gorge as he descends 1,240 metres towards a fjord. His wingsuit features extra fabric under his arms and between his legs to provide extra lift. But one user commented: "That's not flying that's falling with style!"

The Word Up This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election (if there is a tie, it is a toss UP) and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be

opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with (UP to) a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now... my time is UP! Oh... one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night? U P! NOW I WILL SHUT UP!

De Cotta

Cabbage Patch

Sponsored Charity Walk Sunday 15th January

It’s now a new year and we’re looking forward to feasting on lots of new vegetables which have been growing on our veggie patch since September.

De Cotta Law, the firm of Spanish Abogados and English Solicitors dedicated to the international community in Nerja, is sponsoring a Charity Sponsored Walk this month. The Walk will be on Sunday 15th January, and will be in aid of Cudeca Foundation, the Cancer Hospice on the Costa del Sol, and also the St Michael’s Anglican Church Roof Fund (Iglesia de San Miguel) in Plaza Andalucía here in Nerja. To register your interest and to take part, please contact Naomi at De Cotta Law’s new offices at number 11, Calle Diputación, a few minutes from the Balcon. NEW ADDRESS - De Cotta Law Nerja has new ground floor offices at Calle Diputación 11, 29780 Nerja opposite their old offices. Tel.: +34 952 527 014 Fax: +34 952 523 428

We’ve already had the pleasure of eating our first lot of red tomatoes, and the beetroots are doing well, although they’re not as big as last year when I could barely fit them in the saucepan! The celery, carrots and onions are also doing well but the peas have yet to yield! We’re very glad we put plastic down first this year as that’s really helped to keep the weeds at bay. They still pop up sometimes but there are far fewer and they’re easier to pull up too. More veggie news in Feb… Over and ‘sprout!’ If you would like a new venture in 2012 and want to grow your own veggies then give Jose a call today on 639 120 707. Plots available in Mezquitilla.

Anda Networks Anda Networks - Wireless Internet Infrastructure has been operational in the Costa del Sol for more than five years. Anda Networks acquired the Wireless Network in May 2009. Our objective over the last few years has been to achieve a stable infrastructure, whilst offering clients value for money. Anda Networks has a large coverage area within the Costa del Sol. This coverage has been achieved by utilising large mast locations (usually on large mountain areas) throughout the current coverage area, this currently extends from Nerja/Maro (east) to Sotogrande (west). The company is continuing to extend its coverage throughout the Costa del Sol and Andalucia, the expansion plans are very positive over the the next five years for those clients who currently cannot receive the company’s services. This new coverage will be achieved without compromise to existing services or clients. “We have made some very positive changes to our backbone services over the last six weeks, therefore enabling us to offer a greater variety of products and services in the future with regard to the internet and telephony services we provide,” says the company. “Whilst making these changes, we moved our entire network operation centre to a new data centre in Malaga. Unfortunately, this meant that our clients were without services for 21 hours, but services were restored in a very short timescale, considering the amount of work that was involved and achieved.”

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our clients for their continued support over the years, and wish them a very happy and prosperous New Year!”

Boat For Sale Wow!! Now I could live on this.... Want to buy a boat? Think about this "island yacht", and make sure I should be invited to its inaugural sailing... Yes you read it right, a whole amazing island built right on a beautiful yacht. Created by UKbased yacht design company Yacht Island Designs, bringing a whole island onto a yacht. The design as you can see is inspired by tropical islands, with huts, a pool and to top of that, a whole volcano that is sure not to erupt. Since

this is a yacht, it comes packed with special VIP rooms, arcades, gym, lounges, spas and even a helipad. The volcano adds a lot of beauty to the whole look of the yacht, it also happens to have water flowing out of it onto the pool creating this amazing river complementing the whole tropical look. The back of the yacht has a retractable beach deck where structures float on the sea making the sea accessible to swim in and of course grant access to various water activities such as wake boarding and jet-skis. The whole concept is pure genius and the result looks even better.

Cazadores De La Luna Hotel The hotel Cazadores de la Luna, located in the pueblo of Colmenar has new owners who are doing a fabulous job of winning the hearts of customers.

During the meal Xavier was always on hand to help with any requests and he took the time to ensure we had everything we needed and to check we were enjoying our meals.

Fran, Jay, Paul and family took over the rural hotel at the end of September and their hard work has begun to pay off. They kindly invited a couple of members of The Sentinella to sample their culinary skills.

Neither of us had much room for dessert but how could we possibly resist such an enticing selection?! I was drawn to the homemade Death by Chocolate while Kami rather fancied the Pavlova. However when Xavier told her the size of the portion (clue: big) she changed her mind and instead ordered the prune & chocolate cake, freshly made by Fran that very day.

We chose a cold night so imagine our delight when we entered the restaurant of Cazadores to feel the warmth of a burning log fire! Xavier the waiter quickly introduced himself. Kami and I were equally surprised by his excellent English skills and his friendly and fun personality. He presented us with two menus and upon our request brought us two glasses of house red – a rich tasting Rioja Crianza. To accompany the wine he placed a plate of tapas in the middle of the table, including homemade croquetas de shark….buenisimo! After agonising over all the dishes on the menu, Kami and I both chose soups for starters. Kami couldn’t quite believe how delicious her vegetable soup was as she doesn’t usually like it, but that evening she felt unusually daring! My seafood soup was equally yummy and both bowls disappeared in record time. For mains I opted for the cod in beer batter and Kami the chef’s special chicken….special because it contains rather unusual ingredients. For the purpose of this article the ingredients are secret. If you want to know what they are then we’d recommend that you give this dish a try. It’s absolutely divine and your tastebuds will thank you for life!

We gulped as much as our stomachs could possibly hold and after letting it digest for a while Fran showed us around the rest of the hotel. It’s huge, with a brand new swimming pool, sixteen rooms with breathtaking views, a very large and inviting function room (PERFECT for weddings and parties), and not forgetting the incredibly beautiful courtyard! We left Cazadores de la Luna not only with full stomachs but also with full hearts. The team there radiate a special light which just isn’t present in most restaurants. They have a rare gift to touch people not only through the menu and the food, but also through simply being themselves. From Kami and Keidi at The Sentinella we thank you for an outstanding evening. We couldn’t recommend Los Calzadores de la Luna more… go there and feel the natural warmth!

FaceBook “The information people give out on Facebook, when linked up with other information freely available on the internet, is an absolute goldmine for criminals," the Daily Mail quoted Michael Fraser, a reformed burglar who presents the BBC's 'Beat The Burglar' programme, as saying. "One year, you might have a party and give out your address. A while later, you might tell everyone that it is your 30th birthday. So, if you've accepted me as a friend of a friend, I know your name, your address and your birth date. "From that, I can go to and on there I can find out what you do for a living, how much your home is worth - and whether you're likely to be worth burgling. "I might have already made up my mind because you've posted party pictures on Facebook and I can see what kind of valuables you have in the house - and which rooms they're in. Then you go and tell your Facebook friends how much you're looking forward to going on holiday next Tuesday.

"I can go on to Google Street View and see actual photographs of your home. I can see if you have a burglar alarm, or whether there are any bushes in the garden to hide in. And I can see all the alleyways I can escape down. And, of course, I know you won't be at home. "Once you accept a stranger into your Facebook account, they can begin what we call social engineering - delicately asking questions to build up information about you,' said Jason Hart, senior vice president of CRYPTOCard Network Security. "And that can cause havoc. Let's say they got your email address, then they could go to your email account pretending to be you and saying you have forgotten your password. "Once they have that secret information, the email account will let them in. And once they are in there, they can find lots of sensitive information, such as your Amazon and eBay account history. "They can then go to those sites pretending to be you and saying you have lost your passwords, and guess what happens then? "Those sites send the passwords to your email account - the one that they have already conned their way into. "Crooks who do this usually use the credit card details you have stored there to buy online gift vouchers that can be traded on the internet. It is a form of instant currency. "Even worse, if you have a PayPal account and have credit in it, your so-called friend could clean it out. "Effectively, they have become an electronic version of you, they can change all your passwords and begin stealing from you. Hope you will be careful in the future.

g n i z a Am cts InseFlies

A female fly produces 500 to 2,000 eggs in their life. Flies like heat, light and low wind.

One of the most generally despised creatures on this planet is the common fly, yet in common with most other forms of insect life, it has a fascinating array of hidden talents. The average airspeed of the common housefly is 4.5 miles per hour. Deer flies will bite a hole in your skin with their strong mandibles, put a little saliva-like material in the wound to keep the blood from clotting and lap up the blood with a sponge-like proboscis. Flies are attracted by odours, and usually enter a building through open doors and windows near garbage and food.

The house fly "hums" in the key of F. can Flies "taste" with their feet A midge fly has a wing beat of 1046 times a second. A dragonfly has a lifespan of seven weeks. The fastest known insect is a dragon fly that has been clocked at 58 kilometres an hour.

Amazing Insects (Continued) A housefly can only ingest liquid material. They regurgitate their food to liquefy the food that they are going to eat. A house fly's feet are 10 million times more sensitive than a human tongue.

Del Boy’s Dodgers

Well folks new year new dodgers! For those of you who don’t know about this section, it is about listing businesses that we at The Sentinella no longer have any association with. Make of it what you will!

Dragonflies can fly up to 35 miles per hour. One of the most dangerous insects in the world is the common housefly. They carry and transmit more diseases than any other animal in the world. The lifespan of a firefly is about seven days. During these days, they are busy trying to find a mate. The dragonfly has not changed over the last 300 million years.

Our first one of the year and hopefully the last is Denis Wall from Security Specialist Spain who are based in Frigiliana.

The Word Queen Your Book’s Genre Your job as a writer is much more than just writing. Anybody can sit down and write a story, that’s simply a matter of sitting down and typing three or four pages a day until it’s done. But not every book is saleable, not every saleable book will find an audience, and not every book that finds an audience will be able to bring the readers back for more. When preparing your book for submission to an agent or publisher, it’s essential that you define your book’s genre correctly. The reason for this is that the genre of your book will determine the agents and publishers you will eventually approach. Get it wrong and your book will be rejected time and time again. Publishers are set up to sell one type of genre. Even large publishers are split into genre de-

fined departments and imprints. They have different readers, but also different marketing approaches and design aspects. It’s your duty as a writer to correctly define your book’s genre and then choose the right agents and publishers who can sell books of your chosen genre. My advice for a first time writer is to turn to Amazon to help define your book’s genre. Collect a list of five to ten titles you feel are similar to your own, then look on Amazon to see how each is categorised. This should give you a good idea about your own book’s genre. Fancy A Date? Dating customs around the world These are some of the ways people date in other countries of the world. Afghanistan - Dating is rare in Afghanistan because most marriages are arranged by parents, and schools are separate for boys and girls. The opportunities to meet are rare. Girls have a 7pm curfew, while boys have an 11pm curfew. Australia - Most teens go out in large groups and don't pair off until they are 18 or 19 years old in Australia. Girls often ask out boys and pay for the date, too. Couples often go to dinner parties, barbecues, or the beach. Central and South America - Dating is not allowed until the age of 15 here. When of age, most boys and girls date in large groups, going out together to weekend dance parties. When not dancing, teens gather at local clubs to eat and talk. Europe - Dating is usually a group event in Europe. In Finland, as many as 30 teens may

attend a movie together. Slumber parties are common in Italy and Switzerland, where teens gather for parties at a home and sleep there when the party is over. In Spain teens join a pandilla, a club or a group of friends with the same interests, like cycling or hiking. Dating is done one-to-one and both girls and boys ask each other out and split the cost of the evening's entertainment. Russia - Dates take place at dances or at clubs where teens eat or chat with friends. In small towns, teens meet in the streets downtown or gather around a fountain. Iran - It is against the law to date in Iran. Teens are separated until they are of marrying age, then their families introduce them to each other and sometimes a courtship follows. Japan and Korea - In Japan and Korea, most high school students don't date or go to parties, but spend their time studying instead. Dating begins in college, when only boys do the asking and pay for the dates.

Ingredients 1kg squid, cleaned tentacles cut off, chopped and reserved 2 tbsp olive oil 100ml brandy 2 clove garlic, chopped 5 tinned anchovies, chopped 3 tbsp capers, chopped 2 chillies, chopped 1 tbsp flour 300ml white wine 2 tbsp parsley, chopped, to garnish steamed couscous

4. Stuff the squid with the stuffing mixture, allowing a little room for the stuffing to expand during cooking. Seal the ends with cocktail sticks.

For the stuffing: 3 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped reserved squid tentacles, (see above) 3 plum tomatoes 85g breadcrumbs 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 eggs 2 tbsp parsley, chopped salt, and freshly ground pepper

5. Heat the olive oil in a large, lidded, deepsided, heavy-based frying pan and fry the stuffed squid for 2 minutes. 6. Pour over the brandy and carefully set alight. Buy A Home Spain - Rent A Home Spain They are on the move... Buy/Rent A Home Spain are expanding Haven’t they heard that there is a world-wide recession? So many businesses have just slowed down or even stopped because of all the negativity around them. But the ones that flourish are those who roll up their sleeves and take action; even more action than in times of abundance. The owners, Angela & Austin Taylor have recently returned from A Place in the Sun Live exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham and are already reaping the benefits of that adventure with completed property sales and rentals and with more in the pipeline. They have introduced, very successfully, their ‘Free Legal Clinic’ and have more ideas up their sleeves for 2012. And now they feel the need to re-locate to larger and better premises. The good news is that the new offices are only 200 metres from their old office and are located on the main road opposite the Torre del Mar bus sta-

tion. The move is planned to be completed by Monday 16th January. Austin says: ‘It’s all about customer service - giving people what they want - and we believe in our new offices we are in great shape to get 2012 off to good start to give that service to all of our property owners, renters and buyers.’

Canillas de Albaida

Canillas de Albaida (pronounced Alb eye da) It is part of the Sun and Wine route and is situated 52 kilometres from Malaga and 24 kilometres from Vélez-Málaga. The name Albaida means white and was named by the arabs who founded the village in the 13th century, because according to legend the town was surrounded by white flowers! Situated on the Sierra Almijara mountain range on the borders of the provinces of Malaga and Granada the village is surrounded by high mountains where goats and eagles are frequently seen as well as wild boar! Here the fresh mountain air is filled with the scent of pine and oak and nearby is the Acantilados de Maro Nature Reserve with its gorse, rosemary and the increasingly rare sea lavender. Like most of the villages in the Axarquía the streets are narrow and steep and cars not only look out of place but have problems fitting

through. Different coloured paint on the house walls about hip height a legacy of bumps and grinds! Do visit the public laundry, built in 1956, an oasis of cool against the scorching summer heat, filled with plants and the sound of running water. Important monuments worth a visit are Nuestra Señora de la Expectacion ( our lady of expectation church) which is in the village square and the Santa Ana Hermitage built at the highest point of the village with the most spectacular views. Opposite the town and just past the municipal swimming pool is the San Antón Hermitage which was built in the 17th century. It stands alone and quietly humble with its simple bell tower but has an allure that makes you stop and visit a while. If hunger takes hold while you are there do sample the local dish of Migas, made with both corn and wheat and also try the fried pumpkin. To tempt your tastebuds further the local Moscatel wine is excellent. To get to Canillas de Albaida you can either go on from Cómpeta, up from Archez or down from Salares.

Random Jokes :) Charlie was installing a new door and found that one of the hinges was missing. He asked his wife Mary if she would go to B&Q and pick up a hinge. Mary agreed to go. While she was waiting for the nice young man to finish serving a customer, her eye caught a beautiful bathroom vanity tap set... When the man was finished, Mary asked him, "How much is that vanity set? The young assistant manager replied, "That's a gold plated set and the price is £500.00. Mary exclaimed, "My goodness, that is very expensive. It's certainly out of my price bracket." She then proceeded to describe the hinge that Charlie had sent her to buy. The manager said that he had them in stock and went into the storeroom to get one. From the storeroom the manager yelled. "Lady, do you wanna screw for the hinge?" Mary paused for a moment and then shouted back, "No, but I will for the vanity set." ------------------------------------------------------------A man wanted to get married. He was having trouble choosing among three likely candidates. He gives each woman a present of $5,000 and watches to see what they do with

the money. The first does a total makeover. She goes to a fancy beauty salon, gets her hair done, new makeup; buys several new outfits and dresses up very nicely for the man. She tells him that she has done this to be more attractive for him because she loves him so much. The man was impressed. The second goes shopping to buy the man gifts. She gets him a new set of golf clubs, some new gizmos for his computer, and some expensive clothes. As she presents these gifts, she tells him that she has spent all the money on him because she loves him so much.. Again, the man is impressed. The third invests the money in the stock market She earns several times the $5,000. She gives him back his $5,000 and reinvests the remainder in a joint account. She tells him that she wants to save for their future because she loves him so much. Obviously, the man was impressed. The man thought for a long time about what each woman had done with the money he'd given her. Then he married the one with the biggest tits.

In Time, directed by Andrew Niccol, doesn't do anything for the mind, body, or spirit. Instead, Justin Timberlake is displayed as a semi-action hero, Amanda Seyfried has a bad pageboy haircut, and Cillian Murphy is the Agent Smith substitute. Along the way, there are some interesting concepts, sadly undermined by limp direction and weak storytelling. In the not too distant future, scientists have figured out a way to make people live forever. They are genetically engineered to live to 25, and then after that, they have one year left, the minutes ticking down on a digital readout located on their arm. People can earn more time

through work or investment, and as a result, it has become the main currency. In this situation sits Will Salas (Timberlake), who lives in a time ghetto, far away from the rich and influential. When he helps a misguided man with over a century available, he ends up with his years. This takes him to New Greenwich, into the life of spoiled heiress Sylvia Weis (Seyfried). Her father (Vincent Kartheiser) is involved in controlling the time markets. When a veteran Minuteman named Leon (Murphy) comes to collect Will's unauthorized decades, he kidnaps Sylvia. He soon discovers the way in which this new society works -- in essence, allowing a few to achieve a kind of immortality while killing as many of his type in the process. With Sylvia by his side, he decides to right all the wrongs. In Time is an interesting idea poorly executed. And if you don’t believe me go and see it for yourself. Star Rating: **/*****

Cafe Bar La Tasca Cafe Bar La Tasca, a fresh approach to cafe bar dining with a slightly different concept to your every day "menu del dia".

superb value in an informal and relaxed street terrace cafe - could this be the nucleus of Torre Del Mar's first gastro pub? Next time you fancy some breakfast, a mid morning snack, some lunch or maybe just a glass of rioja and a tapa on your way out of town La Tasca is definitely worth a visit.

The focus here is simple.. variation, quality and price. At La Tasca you can expect a nice plate of food, freshly prepared to order, well presented and above all excellent value for your hard earned cash. The menu is peppered with a nice variety of plates, such as the fantastic homemade feta cheese, olive and caper meatballs with grilled tomato salad and chips AND if that´s not enough to get your juices flowing you might want to try the pan fried fillet of chicken layered with herbs, parmesan cheese and serrano ham with a balsamisc drizzle... These vibrant little dishes are less than 6₏ and would not be out of place on any established restaurant menu for double the price but La Tasca are striving to put quality together with

New Year’s Resolutions Here are 10 tips to help get you started when making your’s…

your New Year's resolution and motivate each other.

1. Be realistic The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to never eat your favourite food again could be a bad choice. Strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now.

6. Reward yourself This doesn't mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your resolution is to diet. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something that you enjoy that does not contradict your resolution. If you've been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, perhaps your reward could be going to a movie with a friend.

2. Plan ahead Don't make your resolution on New Year's Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mindset that particular day. Instead, it should be planned well before 31st December arrives. 3. Outline your plan Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have one more cigarette. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk.

7. Track your progress Keep track of each small success you make toward reaching your larger goal. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and small accomplishments will help keep you motivated. 8. Don't beat yourself up Obsessing over the occasional slip won't help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take each day one at a time.

4. Make a "pro" and "con" list It may help to see a list of items on paper to keep your motivation strong. Develop this list over time, and ask others to contribute to it. Keep your list with you and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve. 5. Talk about it Don't keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best case scenario is to find yourself a buddy who shares

9. Stick to it Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity, such as exercising, to become a habit, and 6 months for it to become part of your personality. Your new healthful habits will become second-nature in no time. 10. Keep trying If your resolution has totally run out of steam by mid-February, don't despair. Start over again! There's no reason you can't make a "New Year's resolution" any time of year. Best of Luck!

Only In America Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist!! (true story) British scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the Windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow.. The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions. Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo: "Defrost chicken.

BEM idiomas Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year, but now is the end of the celebrating and we have to get back to normality – working, school runs, Spanish lessons, etc.. a New Year which means new things. In past years here in Spain, I have said many a time: “I will learn Spanish this year.” Well I did and I kept my lessons going, but maybe I didn’t learn as much as I should have done. You are probably thinking ‘what is so different this year?’ Well the difference is, I really want to learn, I really want to take some time out each week to learn what I have perhaps picked up incorrectly in past years. I want to speak Spanish correctly. Now this is a bonus because I have finally realised I actually want to learn – before, I was just going to my lessons as routine because I felt I had to, to show willing. Not really the best attitude! Is 2012 the year for you to learn Spanish with a professional and qualified teacher? Maybe you have just moved to Spain and are looking to do the sensible thing and start classes straight away. Well look no further, becaue BEM in Velez Malaga can help you. Viviane is

Mind, Body & Spirit My piece last month about the dangers and undesirable effects of vaccination seems to have stirred up quite a hornets’ nest, but I have expressed the same view in response to a Facebook post on MMR vaccination. The original comment dismissed the research supporting people’s concern as “discredited,” calling it “old wives' tales.” However, wives -- both young and old, and indeed women in general, with their more intuitive grasp of their childrens’ health -- have been prominent in challenging the “wisdom” of vaccination. Let’s not forget that not too long ago, the ancestors of these “old wives” were accused of being in league with the devil, tortured and put to death for daring to heal with herbs and assisting mothers in labour! Since writing the piece, I have come across the disturbing results of a survey which shows that children who receive multiple vaccinations are two to five times more likely to suffer diseases and disorders than children who don’t. It also revealed that nearly half of all children in the USA (where there is close to 100 per cent vaccination) suffer from a chronic disease or disorder, and 21 per cent are developmentally impaired. Prescription of Ritalin, a behaviourmodifying sedative, is soaring. However, vaccination is not alone amongst modern medical practices which may pose a hidden danger to health or, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, generate health problems as -- or more serious than -- those they are intended to cure. Treating endocrine disorders such as diabetes or thyroid imbalance by injecting large doses of the relevant hormone may mask the real cause of the problem, whilst

putting the gland itself under increasing stress. This is due to a phenomenon known as cellular resistance. A healthy cell in an organ such as an endocrine gland functions as a unit in a vast community of other cells. Its membrane is loaded with thousands of receptors, ready and waiting to receive vital information from messenger molecules, from which it adjusts its activities and output appropriately. The process is self-regulated via complex feed-back loops, enabling the cell to continually adapt its response to changing demands and conditions. Problems arise when this delicate communication network is “jammed” by foreign chemicals and metals which may be products of a toxic diet or environment, or introduced through medical treatment. Its capacity to process cellular information compromised, the affected gland starts to either over-or under-produce its hormone, at which point a diagnosis of glandular exhaustion or malfunction is made. Hormone treatment is prescribed, causing still further cellular resistance in the beleaguered gland, which may eventually become so stressed that it truly is exhausted. A condition which, in many instances, could have been treated through a programme of detoxification, dietary therapy and environmental management has been turned into a chronic debilitating condition, involving possibly life-long dependency on external support systems. Finally I’d like to wish all our readers a happy -- and healthy -- New Year! Please refer to my website at or see his advert below:

Readers Writes This email concerns a young Spanish man, Javier Valverde who lives in Puente Don Manuel. I recently needed someone to help me tidy my plot of land and Javier was highly recommended by a friend. Javier had spent a week working on my friends garden/plot. With his phone number in hand I called Javier and arranged a day for him to carry out several tasks. He turned up at the agreed time and after a 15 minute brief he set to work, this allowed me to continue painting my house, sorry our house as my wife continually corrects me! As a fairly fit 62 year old I gave what I thought to be a steady days work to Javier. He stopped at 10:30 for the ubiquitous bocadillo and recommenced work some 10 minutes later. By lunchtime Javier was asking me what tasks I had set for the afternoon as he, in his opinion had about one hour's work left. I immediately carried out a military style inspection of his work and it was all completed to a very high standard. During his lunch break I looked for additional tasks and discussed his performance with my wife. As I was keen to complete the painting we decided to employ him for another day's work.

I think that by now you have the background to the story. In essence Javier proved to be a remarkable worker. He is polite, trustworthy, industrious and totally reliable. I would unreservedly recommend him to anyone. What is also remarkable is that he works an 8 hour day (and I mean an 8 hour day) for only 50â‚Ź. Although I have not seen his other skills, he told me that he is a good painter and can do limited construction work. I have had many socalled professionals of varying nationalities come to my house and only one (my Spanish neighbour) has done the work to my satisfaction other than Javier. As a result of his efforts I am hoping that two members of my Spanish class are going to employ him.. However he still needs more work to survive the present economic climate. So if anyone needs work to be done call Javier. He does speak fairly good English. Contact details are; Javier Valverde 616642451 or 617904449 I hope that you are able to publish this letter on behalf of Javier and help someone who is trying to help himself. Mr Ivor Pringle

) : a h a h s e k o J The only way to pull off a Sunday afternoon “quickie with their 8-year old son in the apartment was to send him out on the balcony with a Mars Bar and tell him to report on all the Street activities. Their 8-year old began his commentary as his parents put their plan into operation: 'There's a car being towed from the parking lot,' he shouted. 'An ambulance just drove by!' 'Looks like the Anderson 's have company,' he called out. 'Matt's riding a new bike!' 'Looks like the Sanders are moving!' 'Jason is on his skate board!' After a few moments he announced, 'The Coopers are having a shag!' Startled, his mum and dad shot up in bed! Dad cautiously called out, 'How do you know that?' 'Jimmy Cooper is standing on his balcony with a Mars Bar.' ------------------------------------------------------------John was 9 years old and was staying with his grandmother for a few days. He'd been playing outside with the other kids, when he came into the house and asked her, 'Grandma, what's that called when two people sleep in the same bedroom and one is on top of the other?' She was a little taken aback, but she decided to tell him the truth. 'Well, dear, it's called sexual intercourse.' 'Oh,' Little Tony said, 'OK,' and went back outside to play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came back in and said angrily, 'Grandma, it isn't called sexual intercourse. It's called bunk beds and Jimmy's mum wants to talk to you.' ------------------------------------------------------------A husband and wife were having dinner at a very fine restaurant when this absolutely stunning young woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a big open-mouthed kiss, then says she'll see him later and walks away. The wife glares at her husband and says, "Who was that?" "Oh," replies the husband, "she's my mistress." "Well, that's the last straw," says the wife. "I've

had enough, I want a divorce!" "I can understand that, "replies her husband, "but remember, if we get a divorce, it will mean no more shopping trips to Paris, no more wintering in Barbados, no more summers in Tuscany, no more Jaguar in the garage and no more yacht club. But the decision is yours." Just then, a mutual friend enters the restaurant with a gorgeous babe on his arm. "Who's that woman with Ralph?" asks the wife. "That's his mistress," says her husband. "Ours is prettier," she replies. ------------------------------------------------------------As a butcher is shooing a dog from his shop, he sees ÂŁ10 and a note in his mouth, reading: "10 lamb chops, please." Amazed, he takes the money, puts a bag of chops in the dog's mouth, and quickly closes the shop. He follows the dog and watches him wait for a green light, look both ways, and trot across the road to a bus stop. The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench. When a bus arrives, he walks around to the front and looks at the number, then boards the bus. The butcher follows, dumbstruck. As the bus travels out into the suburbs, the dog takes in the scenery. After awhile he stands on his back paws to push the "stop" button, then the butcher follows him off. The dog runs up to a house and drops his bag on the step. He goes back down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself -Whap!against the door. He does this again and again. No answer. So he jumps on a wall, walks around the garden, beats his head against a window, jumps off, and waits at the front door. A big guy opens it and yells at the dog. The butcher runs up screams at the guy: "What in the world are you doing? This dog's a genius!" The owner responds, "Genius? I don't think so. It's the second time this week he's forgotten his key!" ------------------------------------------------------------Police cordoned off Liverpool City Centre this morning when a suspicious object was discovered in a car. It later turned out to be a tax disk

Jokes h a h a :) Tired of constantly being broke and stuck in an unhappy marriage, a young husband decided to solve both problems by taking out a large insurance policy on his wife with himself as the beneficiary and then arranging to have her killed. A 'friend of a friend' put him in touch with a nefarious dark-side underworld figure who went by the name of 'Artie.' Artie explained to the husband that his going price for snuffing out a spouse was £10,000. The husband said he was willing to pay that amount but that he wouldn't have any cash on hand until he could collect his wife's insurance money. Artie insisted on being paid at least something up front, so the man opened his wallet, displaying the single pound coin that rested inside. Artie sighed, rolled his eyes and reluctantly agreed to accept the pound as down payment for the dirty deed. A few days later, Artie followed the man's wife to the local Tesco Supermarket. There, he surprised her in the produce department and proceeded to strangle her with his gloved hands. As the poor unsuspecting woman drew her last breath and slumped to the floor, the manager of the produce department stumbled unexpectedly onto the murder scene. Unwilling to leave any living witnesses behind, ol' Artie had no choice but to strangle the produce manager as well. However, unknown to Artie, the entire proceedings were captured by the hidden security cameras and observed by the shop's security guard, who immediately called the police. Artie was caught and arrested before he could even leave the premises. Under intense questioning at the police station, Artie revealed the whole sordid plan, including his unusual financial arrangements with the hapless husband who was also quickly arrested. The next day in the newspaper, the headline declared... 'ARTIE CHOKES 2 for £1.00 @ Tesco ------------------------------------------------------------One day, in line at the company cafeteria, Joe says to Mike, "My elbow hurts like hell. I guess I'd better see a doctor."

"Listen, you don't have to spend that kind of money," Mike replies. "There's a diagnostic computer down at Aldi's. Just give it a urine sample and the computer will tell you what's wrong and what to do about it. It takes ten seconds and costs 10€. A lot cheaper than a doctor." So, Joe deposits a urine sample in a small jar and takes it to Aldi's. He deposits 10€ and the computer lights up and asks for the urine sample. He pours the sample into the slot and waits. Ten seconds later, the computer ejects a printout: "You have tennis elbow. Soak your arm in warm water and avoid heavy activity. It will improve in two weeks. Thank you for shopping at Aldi's." That evening, while thinking how amazing this new technology was, Joe began wondering if the computer could be fooled. He mixed some tap water, a stool sample from his dog, urine samples from his wife and daughter, and a sperm sample from himself for good measure. Joe hurries back to Aldi's, eager to check the results. He deposits 10€, pours in his concoction, and awaits the results. The computer prints the following: 1. Your tap water is too hard. Get a water softener. (Aisle 9) 2. Your dog has ringworm. Bathe him with antifungal shampoo. (Aisle 7) 3. Your daughter has a cocaine habit. Get her into rehab. 4. Your wife is pregnant. Twins. They aren't yours. Get a lawyer. 5. If you don't stop playing with yourself, your elbow will never get better. Thank you for shopping at Aldi. ------------------------------------------------------------I've just had a letter back from Screwfix. they said they regretted to inform me that they're not actually a dating agency ------------------------------------------------------------I was in the pub with my wife last night and I said: "I love you". She said; "Is that you or the beer talking?" I replied: "It’s me talking to the beer".
