m Fro Ed... the Look out everyone…. it’s here: the festive month, with all its trimmings! So firstly, I would like to wish all our readers, advertisers and contributors a very merry Christmas and a super-prosperous 2018. It’s been a pleasure working with you all this year and I’m very much looking forward to the next 12 months too.

Editor: Kami Knight info@thesentinella.com Sales: 664 210 468 / 664 689 138 sales@thesentinella.com www.thesentinella.com

‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la la la la la’ … or so they say. So many of us get too caught up in writing Christmas lists, buying presents, organising food, dusting off the tinsel and the lights, planning and attending family gatherings and Christmas parties that all too often, we forget about the real meaning of Christmas. We really should take time out to remember those who have no Christmas; those who need help and those who have no friends or family at what should be a wonderful time of the year. Christmas is not about the glitter or in the presents we send and receive — it’s in the love that we have to give to those less fortunate than we are; this is what really matters. If every one of us were to spare a short moment to help a needy person over the Christmas period, the world would indeed be a much brighter place. I for one will be making sure that my children and I help a homeless person sleeping on the streets of Torre del Mar. If you choose to do the same, don’t forget it’s not just food that they need, but blankets and sleeping bags too; it’s nippy enough during the night in our houses, so imagine how cold they must be. There are also the children to remember and the animals. There are many things you could do to help this Christmas time. Here are some ways for you to really make a difference, and how better to end your year than in the knowledge that you have helped someone less well off than yourself.

Strange News and the Hair and Beauty Studio both in Puente don Manuel are collecting toys for the underprivileged children from 1st Dec - 3rd Jan. See adverts on pages 40 and 9. 2. Giving Help: Visit www.emausobradeamor.org Tel: 952 50 62 75 C/Esperando no. 15 Velez Malaga. You can help by making rolls/sandwiches, peeling vegetables and serving the homeless. 3. Donations for Animals: Axarquia Animal Rescue (AAR) is asking people to fill a Christmas bag or box to give to the animals — age-appropriate goodies, yummy treats, leads, harnesses, collars, activity toys, brushes, combs, dried food etc will all be gratefully received and much appreciated. Mark your bag ‘for puppy, kitten, dog or cat’ as appropriate, and take it to one of the drop-off points; see the advert on page 105. Maybe you are reading this and you and your family need some help this Christmas or you know someone who does. If so, remember the parish church of San Juan in Vélez-Málaga organises a Christmas dinner for families in need and every year, it is very successful. The church also gives presents to the children of those families who attend the dinner. However, the organisers never know in advance if they will be able to cope, so this is another place to support at Christmas time. Also, here in Torre del Mar there is a food bank that gives non-perishable food to people in need. It is run by Caritas and all donations can be given at the parish church or via Lux Mundi. You’ll find that once you have shared some love, made donations and made your Christmas a truly ‘giving’ one, you will feel really good about yourself. So then it’s time to let go, get merry and party the season away. All that’s left now is to wait for Santa to arrive … Ho Ho Ho!! Thought of the month... Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting

Face from the past The face of an 18th-century ‘witch’ who died in jail before she could be burned for her ‘crimes’ has been digitally reconstructed. Lilias Adie, from Torryburn, Fife, died in 1704 after apparently confessing to being a witch and having sex with the devil. BBC Radio Scotland’s Time Travels programme unmasked her face by working with a forensic artist at the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee. The team believes it is likely to be the only accurate likeness of a Scottish ‘witch’ in existence as most were burned, destroying any hope of reconstructing their faces from skulls. Presenter Susan Morrison said: ‘It was a truly eerie moment when the face of Lilias suddenly appeared. ‘Here was the face of a woman you could have a chat with, though knowing her story it was a wee bit difficult to look her in the eye.’ Dr Christopher Rynn, who carried out the work using state-of-the-art 3D virtual sculpture, said: ‘There was nothing in Lilias’ story that suggested to me that nowadays she would be considered as anything other than a victim of horrible circumstances, so I saw no reason to pull the face into an unpleasant or mean expression and she ended up having quite a kind face, quite naturally.’ Ms Adie had been sentenced to be burned to death but died before the sentence was carried out — one theory was that she committed suicide. Her remains were buried on a beach between the low and the high tide marks under a large stone. Two’s company Two women have become good friends after realising they had an entire plane to themselves for a flight to Crete. Litsa Nicola, who had paid for extra legroom before the Jet2 flight, thought that she was going to be the only person on the plane. But Donna Haritou checked in at the last minute so she had some company and the pair got on like a house on fire. Litsa, from Walsall, Birmingham, paid £172.10 for the flight to Heraklion to visit her sick brother Yerasimos in Greece. She said: ‘It was wonderful and exciting. We felt like VIPs. It was great. There were more staff on the flight than passengers — the daft thing is I paid for extra legroom. ‘Donna was a lovely lady. We had lots to talk about and lots of laughs. We are going to keep in touch.’

Funny Christmas Sayings Can you believe that Christmas 2017 is here?! It only seems like half a year ago we were celebrating Christmas 2016. “Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people only once a year.” - Victor Borge “My husband’s idea of getting the Christmas spirit is to become Scrooge.” - Melanie White “What I like about Christmas is that you can make people forget the past with the present.” - Don Marquis “The one thing I remember about Christmas was that my father used to take me out in a boat about ten miles offshore on Christmas Day, and I used to have to swim back. Extraordinary. It was a ritual. Mind you, that wasn't the hard part. The difficult bit was getting out of the sack.” - John Cleese “A lovely thing about Christmas is that it's compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all

go through it together.” - Garrison Keillor “I’m extremely sentimental about Christmas, actually. Every Christmas I still take my socks off and stand them in front of the fireplace”. - Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise “A true Christmas miracle is when you manage to untangle all your Christmas lights from last year. Double miracle if they still work.”- Melanie White “Why is Christmas just like a day at the office? You do all the work and the fat guy with the suit gets all the credit.” - Anonymous “There’s nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child.” - Erma Bombeck “The one thing women don’t want to find in their stockings on Christmas morning is their husband.” ~ Joan Rivers

Holiday Rentals In Andalucia

Christmas One Liners

We are pleased to say that one year since this legislation came into effect many of our clients are now receiving registration numbers issued by the Junta de Andalucia for Holiday Rental properties. The registration document provides a VFT number (Viviendas con Fines Turísticos) and lists documents that must be available if there is an inspection.

Why is Christmas just like a day at the office? You do all the work and the fat guy with the suit gets all the credit.

We are providing our clients with information on all aspects of the rental of Holiday properties as well as supplying model contracts and advising on registration with the Guardia Civil which is an obligation. The Junta is now commencing inspections and in accordance with the law they can impose sanctions for failure to comply.

Why does Santa have 3 gardens? He likes to ho-ho-ho.

One issue that is not yet resolved in all areas is that of Occupation licences from the Town Halls. The picture varies, with some Town Halls being proactive in issuing licences and others not responding to requests, even in areas where IBI has been paid for many years and the properties were built many years ago. Sanctions for failing to register can result in fines of up to 18.000€ and the administration can order the closure of the establishment or property for a period of up to 6 months. It is important to get representation if a sanction is imposed as the fine can be considerably reduced. In a recent case, De Cotta Law acted for clients where the fine was reduced to 1.200€ as a result of an appeal. Contact us on info@decottalaw.net or Tel: 952 527 014 See main Advert opposite

As a little girl climbed onto Santa's lap, Santa asked the usual, "And what would you like for Christmas?" The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped, "Didn't you get my E-mail?" What happens if you eat the Christmas decorations? You get tinsel-itus!

How does Santa Claus take photos? With his North Pole-aroid. What did Adam say on the day before Christmas? It's Christmas, Eve. Why are Christmas trees like people who can't knit? They both drop their needles!

Interesting Facts... Macedonia is the only country that got independence from Yugoslavia without shedding a single drop of blood. It remained entirely at peace at the heat of Yugoslav wars in early 1990s and got independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Since becoming independent in 1991, Macedonia has actually had two flags. The flag created after independence featured a symbol found on ancient tombstones that were discovered in ‘Greek Macedonia’ and thus Greece claimed they owned the copyright to the use of the symbol. In order to restart trade with Greece, Macedonia removed the symbol from their flag. In 2006, it became the first country in the world to have full access to a wireless broadband connection, after being a part of a high-tech project. Mother Teresa was born in Macedonia. The country is a major wine growing region and Macedonian wines are highly respected. The national dish is a stew made with beans and peppers and served in an earthenware dish.

New Supermarket Scam! Be careful when Christmas shopping and Please Please Please - make yourself aware of where this is happening AND tell your friends! Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply dropping into Supersol for a bit of shopping has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends. Here's how the scam works: Two seriously good-looking, young men with foreign accents come over to your car and help pack your shopping into the boot. They then both start cleaning your windscreen. Their firm young bodies bulging out of their skimpy vest tops. It's impossible not to look! When you thank them and offer them a tip, they'll say 'No' and instead ask you for a lift to another store,

in my case, Mercadona. You agree and they both get in the backseat. On the way, they start undressing, and both get completely naked. Then, when you pull over to remonstrate, one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts kissing you, touching you intimately, and thrusting himself against you, while the other one steals your purse! I had my purse stolen Oct 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, and 29th. Also Nov 1st, 4th, twice on the 6th, three times last Saturday and very likely again this coming weekend. So Be Warned!!! P.S. Lidl have purses on sale for ÂŁ1.99 each, Aldi are ÂŁ1.75 and look nicer.

Men Vs Women The differences... Men are just happier people. What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another petrol station toilet because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. The occasional well-rendered belch is practically expected. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day holiday requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is €4.95 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original colour. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes one colour for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a moustache. You can do Christmas shopping for twenty five relatives on 24th December in twenty five minutes. NICKNAMES If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate and Sarah. If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Godzilla and Four-eyes. EATING OUT When the bill arrives, Fat Boy, Godzilla and Four-eyes will each throw in €20, even though it's only for €32.50. None of them will (Continued overleaf)

Men Vs Women (Continued) have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators.

money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man.

BATHROOMS A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel from M&S. The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.

MARRIAGE A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does.

ARGUMENTS A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument. FUTURE A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. SUCCESS A successful man is one who makes more

DRESSING UP A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the bins, answer the phone, read a book, and get the post. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. NATURAL Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Any married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing.

Linea Directa Spanish points-based licence system The Spanish points system gives 8 points to drivers who have held a licence for less than 3 years and 12 points for drivers who have held it for over 3 years. If no traffic offences are committed after 3 years drivers receive an additional 3 points. A point is awarded every subsequent 3-year period up to a maximum of 15 points. Drivers can recuperate points by completing a re-education course of 12 hours or a 24 hour course if drivers have lost all their points. Once the course is passed successfully drivers are awarded 8 points on their licence. What is covered? Under Línea Directa’s Traffic Fine Handling service, the policy holder or owner of the insured vehicle as well as any other drivers legally entitled to drive the vehicle can benefit up to a maximum of €500 of the cost of traffic re-education and awareness course, as well as the fees payable in connection with the driving licence recovery test. How are points deducted? Drivers will lose 6 points if under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other illegal substances. Reckless driving, refusing to take a breathalysing test or drugs test, driving over 50% of the speed limit. And drivers will lose 4 points for putting other drivers at risk, throwing objects on the road that could cause accidents or fire, exceeding limits by over 40kph, endangering cyclists, illegally parking, exceeding maximum passenger capacity by 50%. Driving without a seatbelt, using a mobile phone and not keeping a safe driving distance will result in a 3 point fine. How reimbursement works Línea Directa will decide whether payment shall be made to the beneficiary directly or by means of reimbursement upon delivery or the relevant proof of payment. Exclusions and limitations Cover shall be provided only once during each policy period. Only penalty points lost in connection with the insured vehicle and for a reason not excluded in the policy shall be taken into account.

Claimants must notify Línea Directa within 3 months of the notification date of points loss or licence disqualification. Cover shall not be provided in the event of disqualification if the beneficiary is given a guilty verdict. Any loss of points arising from legal infringements or criminal acts are excluded.

Aerial Photography By Drone Aerial photography used to be a rather inaccessible concept for most, but with the fast-moving developments in drone technology, aerial photographs — or HD (High Definition) video — is now possible. Indeed, it is even recommended in certain circumstances. Drone photography/videography has a vast array of uses, the most popular being for real estate, holiday rentals, land disputes, search and rescue, roof/structural inspection and even the production of unique Christmas photos or videos for family back home… Until a few years ago, aerial photography used to be incredibly expensive, but the advances in drone technology have made it more affordable than ever. You can now have video footage or high quality images taken from angles not possible with conventional cameras, showcasing your property in its surroundings. A good aerial photograph can enhance your property. Most aerial photography is now taken by drone, here is some useful information you may wish to read before you enlist your local “Biggles” to come and overfly your property. The Pilot in Command (PIC) • A drone pilot must have the following credentials before being able to earn a cent from flying his/her drone. Ask to see them if you have any concerns – they will prove that the pilot is at the very least competent to fly the drone. • A class 2 or light aircraft pilot’s medical license • Accreditation from an ATO (Approved Training Organisation – Grupooneair.es in Malaga is where I gained my qualifications) which provide a certificate for advanced aviation theory and a practical aircraft handling examination. This is approved by the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority - AESA • Public liability insurance — very important! Above all, a drone pilot is trained to fly safely. They will not fly the drone if there is any risk of danger to people, animals or property and will make a visual inspection of the area before any flight is made in order to assess potential risks. The drone There are quite a few professional-level drones available off the shelf — DJI Phantom models being the most popular. These are expensive and sophisticated pieces of hardware and in the wrong hands are a danger to the public. The drone will have a range of up to 7km on average, but the pilot will keep it within 500 metres as a rule. Modern drones have an incredible array of safety features which, together with employing a trained pilot, will drastically reduce the chances of anything

going wrong. The main asset of the drone — apart from its ability to fly — is its camera. These range from 12 megapixels to 20 megapixels and can produce stunning pictures — especially after editing. It can also produce stunning 4k, ultra HD video, although most is “downscaled” to be used on You Tube or websites in smaller file sizes… Basic Laws – Common Sense The laws in Spain are numerous regarding drones — many a matter of basic commonsense. No flying within 8km of an airport. No flying at night. No overflying groups of people, populated beaches or urban areas (towns/cities). No flying above 120 metres (400ft) altitude. Fly within visual line of sight — 500m normally, although qualified drone pilots can fly outside of this with special permissions There are hundreds of laws not covered by this article, but if you are thinking of having aerial photography work carried out, a qualified drone pilot will know what is allowed and what is not. Rudolph Facts That old red nosed chap.... While there are many reindeer in the North Pole, there is only 1 red-nosed reindeer, Rudolph There are 9 reindeers that pull along Santa’s sleigh, Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid, and Donner and Blitzen then Rudolph was introduced Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a legendary reindeer, created by Robert Lewis May May wanted his reindeer to have an alliterative name. Other choices he contemplated were Rollo and Reginald before deciding on Rudolph Rudolph first appeared in a 1939 booklet written by Robert L. May and published by Montgomery Ward, the department store

Rudolph almost didn’t have a red nose! Because red noses were generally associated with drinking and drunkards Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was first printed commercially in 1947 The Rudolph song was recorded a decade after the character was invented Rudolph’s fathers name is Donner

NOW IS THE TIME TO PLANT VETIVER! WHY NOW? Vetiver is indigenous to India and was introduced here by the Spanish Government in 1994. Unlike most plants it loves the heat of summer. If planted now it will grow to 1-2 metres before the Autumn rains. Vetiver will provide erosion control and act as a wind block for the upcoming winter season. There are many more uses for Vetiver. used as a safe alternative to anti-cholesterol drugs (like statins) that might have side effects.

According to one study, rose hip extract had reduced the growth and migration of breast cancer cells by as much as 45 percent. The fruit extract also prevented cancerous growth in the brain, a place to which breast cancer cells tend to spread.

more than 60 times the amount found in an orange. One of the major benefits of vitamin C is the production of collagen, a protein that forms the connective tissue in the body and thus inhibits the effects of ageing on the skin. The vitamin also treats inflammation and improves immunity, prevents scurvy — a disease that can cause muscle weakness, joint pains, rashes, and tooth loss — and helps maintain the health of blood vessels. Vitamin C also helps your body absorb iron better, thus preventing anaemia and keeping your blood healthy. And yes, vitamin C also treats and prevents cold and flu symptoms. Studies on sufferers from both rheumatoid and osteoarthritic conditions have found that patients who received rosehip showed greater improvements, with ain in the hips, joints, and knees reduced by about a third. Rosehips also contain the fatty acid GOPO, which is the plant version of fish oil. This could be one of the contributing factors for the fruit’s anti-arthritic properties.

According to a Spanish study, rosehips could be active components in functional diets that can help prevent colorectal cancer. The fruit also has an anti-inflammatory action, which contributes to its cancer-preventive properties as well as lessening cartilage erosion. Rosehips contain certain bioactive compounds like phenols, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), beta-carotene, tannins, and pectins – all of which help curb oxidative stress, which can otherwise lead to cancer. One major flavonoid in rosehip, called tiliroside, possesses commendable anti-inflammatory action. Rosehips also contain other active compounds called carotenoids, which are known to decelerate the expansion of certain forms of tumour. Rosehip extract was also found to prevent epithelitis, which can be caused by radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer. Rosehips also contain lycopene (the compound that gives them their red colour) which stimulates the communication between cells, helping to halt the growth of cancerous tumours, and quercetin, which has been found to prevent melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. Regular intake of rose-hip extract has been linked to lowered cholesterol levels. Patients who consumed a drink made of rosehip powder daily for six weeks saw a drop in their total blood cholesterol levels by as much as 5 percent, which could reduce their risk of heart disease by 17 percent. The antioxidants in the fruit improve skin texture and tone, and help treat pigmentation. The essential fatty acids in rosehip oil also prevent scarring and encourage skin regeneration. Director: Paul King Producer: David Heyman Cast: Hugh Grant, Julie Walters, Ben Whishaw Brendan Gleeson, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Joanna Lumley Initial Release: 7th November in Brazil This year’s Christmas treat has arrived early, everyone’s favourite little bear, Paddington is back. It’s a tremendously sweet-natured, charming and above all funny film aimed at both children and adults. Paddington is now happily settled in with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community, where he spreads joy and

marmalade wherever he goes. One day while searching for the perfect gift for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s hundreth birthday, he spots a pop-up book in an antique shop and goes about making odd jobs to pay for it. But when the book is stolen by a thief, Paddington and the Browns embark on unmasking the thief before Aunt Lucy’s big day. Paddington is based on the best-selling and internationally adored series of children's stories by British author Michael Bond, which have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, been translated into over 40 languages and captured the imagination of children and adults around the globe. Sadly Michael Bond, author of the original books, sadly died in June this year at the age of 91, creative and productive to the end. Star Rating *****/*****

“Archetypal Aussie” Paul Hogan, born in October 1939, is best known for his comedy hero character Mick (Crocodile) Dundee, but before he landed the part that would change his life in 1986, he was already an established performer. Originally a rigger working on Sydney Harbour bridge, Hogan was persuaded by his workmates in 1971 to try and appear on the talent show New Faces, Australia’s equivalent of Opportunity Knocks. Hogan inveigled his way onto the programme by claiming to be a "tap-dancing knife-thrower". He appeared on stage in his work boots, holding kitchen knives; he performed a rudimentary shuffle, threw the knives onto the floor and proceeded to make a series of jokes at the judges' expense. Strong positive response from the viewing public saw Hogan invited back for repeated performances on New Faces, and led to weekly appearances on a current affairs programme, where he made humorous comment on some issue of the day. He was given his own sketch programme, the Paul Hogan Show, in 1973 and this ran until 1984, scripted by Hogan himself. It brought him the 1973 TV Week Logie Award for 'Best New Talent'. Hogan also appeared on British TV many times in advertisements for Foster's Lager, in which he played an earthy Australian abroad in London. The character's most notable line (spoken incredulously at a ballet performance) "Struth, there's a bloke down there with no strides on!" followed Hogan for years. However his breakthrough came with the release of the first Crocodile Dundee film — which he co-wrote — and got him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor as well Academy Award and BAFTA nominations. Hogan refused the starring role in the hit film Ghost, choosing instead to make Almost an Angel (1990). In 1994 Hogan co-produced,

wrote and starred in the Western comedy film Lightning Jack, and in 1996, starred in a remake of the 1963 film Flipper about a family-friendly dolphin. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he was featured in advertisements for the Subaru Outback and in 2001, returned to the role that made him famous with the film Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. 2005 saw the release of Paul Hogan - Stand Up Hoges, a DVD compilation of Hogan's favourite live performances throughout his career. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 he embarked on live stand-up performances throughout Australia. Last year, he received the Longford Lyell Award for an outstanding contribution to the Australian screen — he joked he'd only ever been a "one-hit wonder". He is now semi-retired.

The couple met in the I'm A Celebrity jungle in 2004 and married the following year in a lavish ceremony, but just four years later it was all over. In a new interview, former glamour model Katie, 39, has been reflecting on the relationship breakdown, saying while she didn't want the divorce, she does appreciate their time together wasn't exactly normal. "I genuinely loved Pete, genuinely... and I never ever wanted to split with him," she told John Bishop for an episode of his In Conversation With... series. "But when I look back it wasn't normal. Everything we did was documented, you know?" Their relationship blossomed in front of millions of I'm A Celebrity viewers, and their lives together were then filmed for a string of successful fly-on-the-wall documentaries. Even their wedding and arrival of their children were on camera. When asked by John if she and Pete would have stayed together if they hadn't been filming reality shows, Katie said: "Yeah, we'd have probably stayed together."

Surgery survivor walks for charity Inspirational Home and Away star Johnny Ruffo has joined a fundraising walk to raise money for brain cancer research — just months after his own lifesaving surgery to remove a brain tumour. The brave star, who shot to fame on Australian X Factor in 2011, joined lots of fit fundraisers to take part in the walk. He led the crowds round the course for the fundraising event. And when the walk was over, Johnny got up on stage to sing for the first time since his diagnosis earlier this year. The walk raised more than $1million dollars for research into the disease. Johnny has kept his fans up to date with his treatment since his shock diagnosis, sharing photos of his scars after the surgery, and of himself grinning after the successful op. He has now returned to filming as Chris Harrington on the Aussie soap.

Star denies rape claim Ed Westwick has denied even knowing ctress Kristina Cohen after she publicly accused him of raping her.The 27-year-old Ladies Like Us actress took to Facebook, alleging that Westwick forcibly held her down and raped her at his home three years ago. Westwick has hit back, strenuously denying the rape allegations. “I do not know this woman. I have never forced myself in any manner, on any woman,” tweeted the British actor. “I certainly have never committed rape.” Cohen claimed she went to the 30-year-old actor's home for dinner with her producer boyfriend at the time when Westwick allegedly suggested a threesome before she took a nap in his guest bedroom. “I was woken up abruptly by Ed on top of me,” said Cohen. “I told him to stop, but he was strong. I was paralyzed; terrified. I couldn't speak, I could no longer move. He held me down and raped me.” The actress said she had tried to convince her boyfriend to leave prior to the alleged assault but he had asked her to stay a while longer.

It’s Sunday Roast Season

Winter has arrived and it’s that time of the year again when we Brits like a good old Sunday roast. With many places to choose from, this month we decided on ‘Bar Atila’ in Puente don Manuel. I had heard many great reviews about the meals served here, but having such a busy lifestyle, I’d never got the chance to experience them. On arrival I could sense that this was going to be good — a full restaurant always gives that away. After browsing the full menu, our party chose three roasts and a vegetarian nut roast, a child’s roast and a child’s fish and chips, plus starters of cream of mushroom and Stilton soup and breaded baby camembert with chilli dip. There are three options for the Sunday Roast, 1 course - 8.95€, 2 courses - 10.95€,

3 courses 13.95€ (Lamb 1€ extra)  The soup was yummy — served with bread and at just the right temperature; a perfect winter warmer. The camembert, crispy and breaded, came with a chilli dip — also great for a nippy Sunday afternoon. Then wow … the roast was served. It looked amazing and the chefs must have known to include my two favourite veggies — broccoli and carrots — served with succulent lamb, mint sauce, roasties, yorkie, cauliflower cheese, sweet potato and leek mash and gravy… all washed down with a nice glass of Rioja. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with good friends, good food and fantastic service! How the team — owners Kim and Nicki plus their staff — manage to be so efficient is beyond me. The place ran like clockwork and I was so glad that I had booked a table in advance, as Kim told me they serve over 100 covers between the hours of 1pm and 5pm every Sunday — now that’s a lot! Despite the large portions, don’t forget to save some room for pudding. We all chose the homemade ginger sponge with custard. It was so good I just had to ask who made it: Linda Handley, can I just say it was delicious!

Preventing Back Pain: Getting To The Core, Part 2. As a continuation from my previous article regarding the importance of developing abdominal muscles to prevent back injuries below are more exercises to strengthen your core:

and raise left hipbone.

Ab brace, how to do it: 1. Begin by standing tall (eventually you’ll do this exercise throughout the day without thinking about it – even while you’re walking).

3. Gently sway from right to left, as if you have a bowl of soup between your hip bones and you're gently rocking it without spilling. Counting right and left as 1 rep, perform 15 repetitions.

2. Now draw in your belly button to your spine while lightly contracting your abs.

Cat, how to do it: 1. Start on all fours on mat with knees hips-width apart and hands directly beneath shoulders.

3. Hold this contraction for as long as you feel comfortable and practice it several times a day. Make sure to breathe!

2. Exhale and round back toward ceiling like a cat, head drooping down.

Pelvic bowl, how to do it: 1. Lie flat on back with knees bent and feet gripping floor, arms facing down at sides.

3. Pull navel in toward spine. Hold momentarily. Inhale and drop belly down toward floor, lifting head high. Allow ribcage to expand and chest to stretch. Hold.

2. Raise right hipbone as high as you can toward ceiling. Hold momentarily. Slowly shift

4. Perform 15 cycles. See main advert below

People Who Come And Go Tracey and Alan – a magical project! Now when it comes to buying in Spain, many people think they are going to get a real bargain: a 3 bed villa in the country, maybe a little guest ‘casita’, a pool, great views, and near the coast – for 100,000 Euros! Unfortunately such properties are rare to find, if they ever existed, and the reality is that whilst property is far cheaper than in central and Northern Europe, it is still Europe and you get value for money, but not that cheap! But it is still possible to find a bargain and if you have imagination, determination and vision, things are possible! Take Tracey and Alan. Currently living on the other side of the world and aiming to save around 30,000 Euros per annum for each property they buy here, they have just placed a deposit on a small village house requiring some work at the top of the beautiful village of Canillas de Aceituno. The day I showed them the house for the second time, the local builder I had called in, to quote on the work they wanted to do in the house, invited us to try this year’s local wine, made by himself. We sipped the delicious wine at the top of the village, looking

out over the sunset, the twinkling lights of the villages below, with the clearest view of the African mountains across the sea that I have ever seen from the village. It was magical! And magic is what this couple have set out to achieve on a low budget. Over time they hope to have a small portfolio of similar properties: little village houses to let to couples looking to ‘get away’ for a few days and ‘de-stress’, each house exquisitely decorated and furnished, and each with an intimate roof terrace with a Jacuzzi spa to enjoy the magic of the location. One place per year, and they will have themselves, I have no doubt, a sparkling little business and a smart investment for their future. Wishing Tracey and Alan the very best of luck on their new project : punters – please form an orderly queue to book one of their cottages! Christmas From Around The World Global Christmas facts..

Christmas, Arizona and in Florida.

Ukraine: An artificial spider and web in Christmas decorations These are often included in the decorations on Ukrainian Christmas trees. A spider web found on Christmas morning is believed to bring good luck. (Because it kills flies in Champagne!).

Venezuela: In Caracas, the capital, it is customary for the streets to be blocked off on Christmas Eve so that the people can roller-skate to church.

A traditional Christmas bread called 'kolach' is placed in the centre of the dining table. This bread is braided into a ring, and three such rings are placed one on top of the other with a candle in the middle of the top one. The three rings symbolize the Christian Holy Trinity. Canada: Father Christmas has his own personal postcode It is the alphanumeric number: H0H 0H0. (Ho-Ho-Ho) In this way people who write to Santa know that their letter will arrive safely. It has been his personal code since 1982. This address receives some 1 million letters from all over the world each year. Apparently, each letter received will be answered in the same language in which it is written, which, on its own must be a mammoth task. New zealand: Santa's address In New Zealand Santa’s address is Santa's Workshop The North Pole 0001. Australia: Santa can be contacted at Santa Claus, North Pole 9999 and last year he received some 90,000 letters. USA: Towns in the United States with Christmassy names are: Santa Claus, Arizona and Indiana; Noel, Missouri and

UK: It is a British Christmas tradition that a wish made while mixing the Christmas pudding will come true only if the ingredients are stirred in a clockwise direction and each family member has a stir of the mix. Furthermore, a traditional Christmas dinner in medieval England was the head of a pig prepared with mustard. Norway: on Christmas Eve all the brooms in the house are hidden because long ago it was believed that witches and mischievous spirits came out on Christmas Eve and would steal their brooms for riding. Syria: Christmas gifts are distributed by one of the Wise Men's camels. Japan: Sending red Christmas cards to anyone in Japan constitutes bad etiquette, since funeral notices there are customarily printed in red. Syria: Christmas gifts are distributed by one of the Wise Men's camels. Korea: Young ladies skating in Mother Claus costumes in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea: Aren't they lucky to have ice or snow. Incidentally, South Korea is the only East Asian country to recognise Christmas with a national holiday.

Fund Raising Appeal Dear readers, at this wonderful time of the year, please read further and dig deep to help a family that are regular visitors to these shores and are in need of your help. The Ed... Our 10 year old son Ben was born by emergency caesarian because his umbilical cord was wrapped tightly round his neck in the womb. This caused a certain degree of brain damage resulting in severe learning and social difficulties. He has the chronological age of 5 years and will not be attending mainstream school after primary level which is so sad. The poor lad has short term memory loss so remembering things he has learnt is fulitile. At 10 years old he still cannot read and write or even remember how to tie his shoe laces. There is however, a treatment available to repair his brain damage similar to the treatment for Cerebral Palsy but it's only available in certain countries like Switzerland and it's also expensive. Please help us to raise the funds to take our son for this treatment so he can have a more normal and fulfilling life. www.gofundme.com/y63bj-stem-cell-therapy-for-ben/donate

He was unfortunately also born with a rare and dangerous genetic condition called Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS) where he stops breathing the minute he falls asleep. This could have also been a cause of some brain damage before he was diagnosed. Please follow the links for more info; http://www.cchsuk.org There is no cure for that problem and he will suffer with it all his life but with Stem Cell Therapy he could definitely have a better life by repairing the damage caused to his brain. Feel blessed if your children are healthy and thank you for taking the time to read this. Love, Justin & Jana x http://www.cchsuk.org http://www.startstemcells.com/autismtreatment-therapy.html

La Vaqueria So, it´s finally upon us... Christmas, and may I take this opportunity to wish all of you a great one from all of us here at La Vaqueria, arty cafe in Benamargosa. We have a month packed with lots of events including the Holistic Market with it´s unique artesan stalls just perfect for gifts and stocking fillers as well as lots of hand made bits and pieces in the shop. Whilst the sun shines the garden is still a lovely place to sit out and our lunch menu offers something a little bit out of the ordinary and on shady days the log burner is roaring and the hot home made soup is flowing! The vegetable garden is looking a bit tidier again with last seasons stragely crops being replaced with shiny new seedlings and even the mosaics are growing!!! I find the weather at this time of year just right for this kind of work outside so the stone path is growing (slowly!) and the mosaic covered wall is progressing again. We have an exciting line up this month for our Sunday Live Music Buffets culminating in The Last Buffet on Sunday 17th Dec which will be an open mic session where we are inviting all

of the musicians who have played here throughout the year to come and join in. We also have our regular flamenco spot and Jazzyjools & Co will be playing so something for everyone to get us into the spirit of the party season. For an extra special gift why not come to the mosaic workshop and make a present or you could buy a voucher for a class in the New Year. And last but in no ways least.. LA VAQUERIA CHRISTMAS DO...a 6 course meal, all home made of course in a very festive setting just perfect for an evening out with friends, workmates etc before the family get together on the big day. Please contact us for your reservation and above all have a lovely festive season. See more details and contact numbers on our main advert below and do remember that we close for all of January. Enjoy x

) : a h a Jokes h Thanks to AP & MP for the following jokes I’ve been thinking of getting rid of my hoover, it’s only gathering dust ------------------------------------------------------------Seen on the news Aldi is closing 50 stores. Damn that means like 3 cashiers are gonna be outta work! ------------------------------------------------------------I took my car to be washed by one of those young girls in her Bikini for charity. I enjoyed watching her wash the car but was a little bit upset she didn't wax. But the good thing was that her Bikini bottoms hid most of the hair ------------------------------------------------------------My campaign for legalising weed is going well, I have placed posters everywhere, I call it Propaganja ------------------------------------------------------------Chatting up a really hot bird down our local midlands pub, I asked her what really, really turns her on. She responded, "four ply." I thought I was impressing her with my knowledge of timbers but she stormed off in a huff! I just can't understand women, strange aren't they! ------------------------------------------------------------At breakfast this morning, my wife said she's leaving me because of my obsession with Twitter. I almost choked on my #Brown ------------------------------------------------------------Maria had just gotten married, and being a traditional Italian she was still a virgin. On her wedding night, staying at her mother's house, she was very nervous. Her mother reassured her; "Don't worry, Maria, Tony's a good man. Go upstairs and he'll take care of you. Meanwhile, I"ll be making pasta." So, up she went. When she got upstairs, Tony took off his shirt and exposed his hairy chest. Maria ran downstairs to her mother and says, "Mama, Mama, Tony's got a big hairy chest." "Don't worry, Maria," says the mother, "all good men have hairy chests. Go upstairs.

He'll take good care of you." So, up she went again. When she got up in the bedroom, Tony took off his pants exposing his hairy legs. Again, Maria ran downstairs to her mother. "Mama, Mama, Tony took off his pants and he"s got hairy legs!" "Don't worry! All good men have hairy legs. Tony's a good man. Go upstairs and he'll take good care of you." So, up she went again. When she got there, Tony took off his socks and on his left foot he was missing three toes. When Maria saw this, she ran downstairs. "Mama, Mama, Tony's got a foot and a half!" Her Mama said, "Stay here and stir the pasta." ------------------------------------------------------------2 dyslexic skiers stood at top of a mountain. One says"I’m gonna zag zig down now" The other says"It’s not zag zig it’s zig zag" They argue for a while then one says "Let’s ski down and ask that bloke down there. They reach him "Excuse me mate is it zig zag down the mountain or zag zig?" He answers "Don’t ask me I’m a tobogganist" Oh they say "Well give us 10 Bensons and a box of matches then!! ------------------------------------------------------------My Granddad knew from the beginning that the Titanic would sink. He warned everyone but no one would listen. He tried a few more times until he finally got kicked out of the cinema! ------------------------------------------------------------All my vegan mates say I make the best vegetarian burgers. I f***** hate my job at the Benefit’s office ------------------------------------------------------------I was in Toys R Us today when I noticed a really long queue. I asked a member of staff, "What's happening there mate?" He said, "That's the Barbie queue." Then like an idiot, I stood in it for fourty five minutes trying to get a burger ------------------------------------------------------------The bouncers at my local nightclub call me Macaulay Culkin, because I always go home alone ------------------------------------------------------------When I was growing up plastic surgery was a bit of a taboo subject, these days if you mention botox no one raises an eyebrow ------------------------------------------------------------Just bought a 'low energy light bulb' at B&Q. Assistant asked "Will you be putting this up yourself?" I said “No - It’s going in the lounge you pervert” ------------------------------------------------------------“Oi! Warden!” I called from my prison cell, “It’s feezing in here” “Alright” came the reply “I’ll put another bar on!” ------------------------------------------------------------I walked into PC World and went straight to a computer. I checked my emails, did some online shopping, and finally logged into Facebook. After half an hour, a salesman approached me. "Can I help you, sir?" he asked. "No thanks," I replied, "I'm just browsing." ------------------------------------------------------------My wife called me as I was sat in the pub last night.

"I've cooked dinner," she screamed, "And if you're not home within 20 minutes I'm going to feed it to the dog." "Woooah! That's bang out of order!" I said, "It's not his fault." ------------------------------------------------------------Paddy: “Hey Murphy, I heard you was arrested for annoying your neighbours by playing endless Englebert Humperdink songs, what happened?” Murphy: “Police released me....let me go” ------------------------------------------------------------Police say that a man who held staff hostage at a bowling alley, could strike again!! ------------------------------------------------------------A young lad knocked on my door last Halloween and said, "Trick or Treat?" I said, "What have you come as?" He said, "A werewolf." I said, "but you haven't got a costume on, you're just in normal clothes." He said, "Well it's not a full moon yet is it, dickhead." ------------------------------------------------------------“I hear your wife is leaving you because of your obsession with Kylie Minogue” “I should be so lucky” ------------------------------------------------------------Why don't they accept Oyster cards in Shell garages? ------------------------------------------------------------They say that 40 is the new 30, try telling that to a f****** speed camera
