Summer is now well on the way and Spain is looking set to be busier than usual with tourists in 2016. A whole host of publicity in the UK and beyond has pointed out that this summer Spain will be one of the most popular destinations to holiday due to tourists not wanting to risk holidaying in other countries due to recent trouble, in countries such as France, Greece, Turkey, and so on… Therefore, if you own a business here, now is the best time to advertise, to take advantage of all that potential business in the way of increased tourism. If you’re interested in advertising with The Sentinella email my sister, Kami at and she will take care of you and your advertising needs. Also, on The Sentinella front, we’re still looking for another sales person to sell advertising space in the magazine. The ideal candidate will be able to speak both English and Spanish – email And lastly, there are still opportunities to start your very own Sentinella magazine across different regions of Spain, and beyond. As my life is currently taken up with all things baby, he’s all I can think to write about at the moment! This month we have been dealing with teething, which means Ty is waking up two to three times in the night, for comforting and nursing. Now I can say that I’m experiencing the sleep deprivation that some mum’s speak of.

Strange News But then when we awaken, as the morning sun shines in the window, and we have cuddles and play time, being a parent without much sleep is all worth it… And that’s all I can think of to write this month... life as a new mum and all that.

Happy St. George’s Day

Unicorn Alert Drivers in California could be forgiven for thinking they were hallucinating after an escaped 'unicorn' dodged through busy traffic while being chased by police. A force helicopter was used to try and track down the spooked animal which evaded her pursuers for more than three hours, running through orchards and across busy roads. The "unicorn" was actually Juliet, a pony belonging to Madera Ranchos woman Sandra Boos, who dresses her up for children's parties. She had escaped during a photo shoot with the horn and pink halter still attached to her head, UPI reported.

Perfect Art A woman has blown £130k on plastic surgery to look like her holiday caricature drawing – and has not finished yet. Krystina Butel, 31, says she will stop at nothing to reach ‘perfection’. Her obsession began on holiday in Ibiza 15 years ago when she spotted a local artist drawing funny caricatures. Intrigued, she paid him to draw hers, too. But little did she know that this spur-of-the-moment drawing, which only took 10 minutes, would change her life forever. "The woman in the picture was so glamorous," says Krystina, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire. "She was everything I wanted to be. "I figured it would be a nice souvenir of my holiday,” she added. “I didn’t expect it to be so lifechanging."

De Cotta Law Legalisation of properties in Andalucía In Andalucía there are a number of properties, mainly private homes, on land not zoned for construction. Typically these properties have been built without a licence or without complying with the parameters of a building licence from a local authority, which has possibly ignored the infringement of planning laws. These houses have been in limbo between legality and illegality as most were built some years ago, so the deadline has passed for the local government to take action against the illegal construction and uphold urbanisation laws. Some of these homes currently do not have utilities connected, such as electricity and water; although Andalucía’s regional government has approved the Law (Decree 2/2012) which means that owners can now apply for utilities and register their homes. To achieve this, the property owners must secure a licence for their property, known as an Asimilado a fuera de ordenación – this licence is issued by the local town hall for each relevant property in its municipality that is currently outside the planning laws. Also with this licence, owners can proceed to contract utilities from the relevant companies supplying electricity and water etc. However, to obtain the licence, every homeowner will have to follow a procedure that currently is not entirely clear and will depend on the different criteria for each local authority. This procedure will oblige the owner to pay a series of fees to the authorities; the amount depends on the specifications of each building.

This is why it is imperative to seek legal advice to negotiate the somewhat complex procedure and where possible to obtain a licence. Where the property has been licenced, it is then necessary to register at the Land Registry with the new dimensions and construction. The good news is that the Land Registrars are now dealing with the legalisation of many defective applications to ensure that the size of the plot is adequate. As the aim is to protect the environment and prevent overbuilding, this is good news for the future of the area. Call Francisco Martín on Tel: +34 952 527 014 or email See main advert below

Odd Twins Woman gives birth to twins with different fathers after having sex with two men A woman has given birth to twins with different fathers after having sex with two men in the same ovulation period, it is reported. The mother and her husband recently took their two-year-old children for DNA tests because of 'striking' differences in their appearances. The Vietnamese couple were shocked to hear that only one of their twins was biologically related to the father, according to local reports. However, both were the offspring of the mother - with tests ruling out the possibility of a hospital mix-up shortly after their births. Le Dinh Luong, president of the Genetic Association of Vietnam, told AFP that the findings were extremely rare. "Our Centre for Genetic Analysis and Technol-

ogy lab has tested and found a pair of bi-paternal twins," he said. "This is rare not only for Vietnam, but for the world." Bi-paternal twins can occur if two eggs from the same woman are fertilised by the sperm of two men during the same ovulation period. The time window that eggs can be fertilised is small, with sperm cells capable of living inside a woman's body for only four to five days. The lifespan of a woman's egg, meanwhile, is just 12 to 48 hours. Tuoi Tre newspaper reports that the husband was encouraged to take his children for DNA tests by his relatives, who noted that one of the twins did not look at all like him. The two siblings also had 'strikingly different' appearances, according to Dan Tri news site. The pair were both born on the same day around two years ago. But despite being the same sex, one of them has thick, wavy hair while the other has thin and straight locks. The unidentified family are now said to be looking for the best way to deal with the shocking test results.

Another Reminder Of History We was brung up proper!! "And we never had a whole Mars bar until 1993"!!! For everyone born in the 1930’s,40's, and 50's. First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank Sherry while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos... They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, bread and dripping, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer. Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Nandos. Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on a Sunday, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet because we didn't need to keep up with the Jones's! Not everyone made it to the rugby, football, cricket, netball team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on merit. Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and throw the blackboard rubber at us if they thought we weren't concentrating .... We can string sentences together and spell and have proper conversations because of a good, solid three R's education. Our parents would tell us to ask a stranger to help us cross the road. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers and Bubble Gum. We ate white bread and real butter, milk from the cow, and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because....... We were always playing outside!! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were ok. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY, no video/dvd films, or colour T.V, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms... We had friends and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents. Only girls had pierced ears!

Women & Work My wife does not work My wife doesn't work!!! Conversation between a husband (H) and a psychologist (P): P: What do you do for a living Mr. Rogers? h: I work as an accountant in a bank. P: Your wife? h: She doesn't work. She's a housewife. P: Who makes breakfast for your family? h: My wife, because she doesn't work. P: What time does your wife wake? h: She wakes up early because she has to be organised. She organises the lunch for the children, ensures that they are well-dressed, made sure they have had breakfast, brushed their teeth and remembered all their school books. She wakes with the baby and changes nappies and clothes. Breastfeeds and makes snacks as well. P: How do your children get to school? h: My wife takes them to school, because she doesn't work. h: Usually takes a while to figure something out that she can do while she is out, so she doesn't have to pack and unpack the car seat too many times, like drop off bills or to stop at the supermarket. Sometimes she forgets something and has to make the trip all over again, baby in tow. Once back home, she has to feed the baby lunch and breastfeed again, get the baby's nappy changed and ready for a nap, sort the kitchen and then will take care of laundry and cleaning of the house. You know, because she doesn't work. P: In the evening, after returning home from the office, what are you doing? h: Rest, of course. Well, I'm tired after working all day in the bank. P: What does your wife do at night? h: She makes dinner, serves my children and washes the dishes, tidys once more the house, makes sure the dog is put away as well as any left over dinner. After helping children with homework she gets them prepared to sleep in pijamas and the baby is in a fresh nappy, gives warm milk, verifies they brush their teeth. Once in bed she wakes frequently to continue to breast feed and possibly change a nappy if needed while we rest. Because she doesn't have to get up for work. This is the daily routine of many women all over the world, it starts in the morning and continues until the wee hours of the night... This is called "doesn't work"?! Being a housewife has no diplomas, but has a key role in family life! Enjoy and appreciate your wife, mother, grandma, aunt, sister, daughter... Because their sacrifice is priceless. Somebody asked her... You are a woman who works or is it just "housewife"?? She replied: I work as a wife of the home, 24 hours a day.. I am a mother, I am a woman, I am a daughter, I'm the alarm clock, I'm the cook, I'm the maid, I am the master, I'm the bartender, I'm the babysitter, I'm a nurse, I am a manual worker, I'm a security officer, I'm the advisor, I am the comforter, I don't have a vacation, I don't have a licence for disease. I don't have a day off I work day and night, I'm on duty all the time, I do not receive salary and... Even so, I often hear the phrase: "But what do you do all day?" Dedicated to all the women who give their lives for the welfare of their families.

Asbestos - Have You Been In Contact?

MAkiNg CLAiMS iN ThE Uk – ENSURiNg YOU gET whAT YOU DESERVE We have all seen adverts from solicitors saying that they will deal with claims on a no win no fee basis but what does this really mean? In recent years solicitors have been permitted to agree with their client to take a share of any money awarded in a successful personal injury claim. Consequently even though an advert may say “genuine no win no fee” clients may find that they have agreed to pay their solicitor up to 25% of any damages obtained. I do not do this because I believe that my clients should receive whatever compensation I can obtain for them in full. So if you are making a claim in the UK you should be clear what you are signing up for. The solicitor should explain fully the circumstances in which a client signs away part of the damages. If you are concerned about this, even if you have already settled a claim, please get in touch. I deal with any kind of personal injury claim but I specialise in claims for asbestos. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with an asbestos related condition or has breathing problems and has come into contact with asbestos in the UK you may be able to claim damages or benefits in the UK. Even if you are not sure of the name of the company you were working for and even if it is not trading it may still be possible to bring a claim.

There are time limits for bringing claims so if you have been injured in the UK and are not sure what to do I urge you to get in touch as soon as possible. As indicated in my advert no deductions are made for costs from any award of damages. I am happy to talk to anyone free of charge about their individual situation to see if a claim is possible. i can be contacted on 00 44 1244 340560 at or alternatively you can visit my website at

The island is also known for its beauty, political stability and plentiful resources in the form of bauxite and sugar. However, these features contrast with widespread poverty and crime. Jamaica is the birthplace of Rastafarianism, a religious movement which has been adopted by groups around the world who venerate the former Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie. Jamaica has more churches per square mile than any other country in the world. Apart from the United States, Jamaica has won the most world and Olympic medals. Jamaica has more multiple live births than anywhere else in the world. The Jamaican flag is the only flag in the world that does not share any of the colours of the American flag.

OXO Cubes You've been sprinkling OXO cubes wrong your whole life - and here's why A British family roast stalwart, the OXO cube's iconic appearance is known in kitchens up and down the country. But it turns out that those little foil cuboids have been hiding a handy secret. Wrapped up tightly in red and silver, the cube is commonly unwrapped before use. Then, home chefs will be familiar with the crumbling of the cube into a pan, bowl or jug to stir into boiling water. Being left with beefy-smelling fingers has long been an occupational hazard of the Sunday roast, but it turns out the manufacturer never intended it that way, as one popular life hack is showing. On Facebook, Kasie Riley pointed out that if you look carefully at the wrapped cube, you'll see that it has folded flaps on the sides.

And, astonishingly, they are for opening out but not tearing into. Once they're released, crush the cube in the foil. The cube will transform into a flat packet with its contents in their cooking-ready crumbled form. And there's no staining or unpleasant meaty digits for you. The incredibly simple measure has gone viral online, with many claiming they had no idea this was what the pack was intended for. Ken Mayor wrote: "I didn't know that either and yes I have probably used hundreds of them over the years." Angela Gibson added: "Well cant believe it. I'm gobsmacked just tried it and it really works. I will never get OXO all over my fingers again."

Please mention The Sentinella when responding to adverts Maro arches on four floors and is definitely worth pulling off the road to photograph.

Maro is a small village at the far eastern end of the Axarquia almost joining on to the much larger town of Nerja. In fact the Caves of Nerja are just outside Maro! When driving through the village and down towards the shore the most significant building is The Mill at Maro which is now sadly in a ruinous state but the powerful buttress or “friendly foot” still underpins the building at the side of the ravine as it looms majestically out towards the sea almost daring pirates to land on the beach below. It is quite remarkable in its structure built from travertine stone that has stood the test of time. Originally built in 1585 the factory was still working until a fire put an end to its useful life in the 1860´s. Felipe de Armengol constructed the first sugar device in the area after deciding to cultivate sugar cane farming and a road was opened between Maro and Granada across the Sierra de Almijara Mountains. The San Joaquin Sugar Mill which was built in 1884 is located between Nerja and Maro on the old coast road and although now derelict is still an awesome sight. As is the nearby magnificent Aqueduct of El Aguila which has 37 round

Once in the small village of Maro you will find the Eclectic style Church of Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas which is believed to have been built on a previous structure and finished by the end of the 17th century. Its single nave with a wooden beamed ceiling was restored in 1887. The tower has a pyramidal steeple with a small belfry in front. On the day of my visit the wooden doors were invitingly open and I managed to photograph the image of the Virgin of Las Maravillas the patron saint of Maro. Once outside this lovely Church of our Lady of Wonders there is a bar where you can rest and recuperate before visiting the most famous site of the area, the subterranean Caves of Nerja which were discovered by three boys on 12 January 1959. There is a statue of them rock climbing at the entrance to the Caves which has become a huge tourist attraction with more than 15 million visitors who have not only come to admire the caves but also to watch ballet and opera during the International Festival of Music and Dance. The president of the Fundación Cueva de Nerja, Hilario López, received the Tenth Mediterranean Culture Award in commemoration of its 50th anniversary. This year the 57th International Festival of Music and Dance take place between 24th June and 16th July and will feature concerts by The Ballet Nacional de España, Ainhoa Arteta, Jorge Pardo and Los Vivancos.

Linea Directa hOw TO NEgOTiATE ROUNDABOUTS if you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROAChiNg ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAViNg ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples.

1st EXiT RighT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTiNUiNg STRAighT ON (e.g. 2nd EXiT STRAighT AhEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNiNg LEFT OR ChANgiNg DiRECTiON (e.g. 3rd OR FiNAL EXiT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. we hope the information provided in this article is of interest. if you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 165 More information on Línea Directa online at

There are often discrepancies between the real metres of a property or plot and those which are registered in the Land Registry or Cadastre Office. This can be due to extensions being added to a property, or in the case of land, to the segregation of a plot from a larger plot, without reporting these changes to the correct authorities, (i.e. the Land Registry and the Cadastre office). These discrepancies can cause problems when applying for a mortgage as Banks will not finance a property that is not correctly registered. In order to rectify the situation a new deed must be made declaring the new construction or segregation and specifying the actual size. This would require a Certificate detailing the actual meters to be issued by a qualified Architect which should then be duly registered in the Land Registry. In reality the measurements in the Land Registry and the Cadastre Office rarely match, because the measurements in the Registry are from measurements taken by an Architect and the surface areas in the Cadastre Office are taken from aerial photographs. If you have any problems regarding the discrepancies between real measurements and those documented in either the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office you would need expert legal advice on the best way to rectify the situation. In most cases it can only be done by submitting documentation relating to the property, such as the

Deed of Sale, the Deed of New Construction, plans, drawings, photographs, certificates etc. to the Cadastre Office so that their technical staff can proceed to update the specifications and modify the documented areas. There are also many cases where the property or plot is not registered under the name of the actual owner in the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office. In these cases it is not simply a matter of rectifying the measurements, but a matter of registering the property or plot for the first time. If this necessary, in addition to submitting documentation to prove the physical reality of the plot or property you would also need to provide at least the last 4 years of IBI (rates) receipts. To avoid all of these problems, we always recommend that before buying a plot or a property you should check the Land Registry and Cadastre office to ensure that the details are correctly documented. This process would require the assistance of a qualified expert who can make all of the necessary enquiries to confirm that everything is in order. Our company Marbellasolicitors Group has over 15 years experience, helping hundreds of clients to purchase properties and plots both on the coast and inland, so please don’t hesitate to contact us for our advice on this or any other legal issue. After School Activities VS None I am often asked what my daughters do. What after-school activities do they attend? Normally these questions are asked by someone who is pondering if they really could live somewhere so beautiful but remote, or someone who is on holiday and is having a glass of wine in the Plaza as they watch the village live and breathe. My children play. They sometimes attend any classes put on by the Town Hall, and they’ve tried karate and flamenco. They do swimming lessons at the village pool in summer. One gets the odd lesson to play the clarinet in the village band. But what they “do” is play. Arrangements are normally made at the school door by the kids themselves and by 3pm, the children have had lunch and are out with a ball or are in the park. They go in groups as there are not many kids up here. Older ones watch out for the younger ones and brothers look out for sisters and vice versa. The mid afternoon snack “merienda” is eaten at the closest house usually sandwiches or a biscuit, milk, juice, whatever the mum has around. They play with water balloons and play chase. Closer to Easter week they make the “tronos”, the statues used in the processions, and take them around the streets. They skate and they run. In the summer they meet the rest of the village kids at the pool and they spend long afternoons in and out of the water, eating snacks and playing cards in the shade. The group age ranges from three to thirteen years old. They form a little community within a community. I have friends who live elsewhere and they take their children to classes. There is a great range of after-school activities and I sometimes wonder if my children are missing out on something. I don't think they are. I watched “the group” a lot over last summer at the pool. They learn a lot of social skills and even the responsibilities of being together. And what they were doing was healthy: all outside, involving exercise and in the good fresh air. And not one of them lacked confidence. So they may not be learning a particular “thing” but they are gaining life skills. Yesterday I went for a walk with my youngest daughter as we often do at weekends. Sometimes it’s just us, and other times some of her friends come along. We go up into the hills and take snacks, the dog and just explore. She was

talking about how this was “the best”, she is seven. I told her about a post I had seen on Facebook. It said that the best six doctors were: sunshine, water, rest, air, exercise and diet. We spoke about how even just that morning she had covered everything. Breakfast had been good, organic bread from the farmers market (diet), and here on the walk she was in the sunshine having exercise in good, fresh and pure air. We were reaching the old mill where she could drink water from the fountain and rest on the flat stones. So that was her physical needs covered, according to Facebook. And she was happy. We had collected mint, she went for a paddle and played with her dog. Later she joined friends in the park. She had learnt things on the walk and now was socialising. I feel that is a good life and although she may not attend summer camps and specialist classes, she is flourishing. I do not knock those parents who do take their kids to many afterschool activities. I actually salute them because it is a lot of work to dedicate your afternoons and evenings to getting the kids ready and escorting them to classes. And to be honest, I believe that if it works, don't knock it, so if it works for them then that is great. Children here in Spain can have such a great life with the good weather encouraging outside activities and socialising. I do smile when I am asked what we “do”. We live, breathe and play in such a beautiful part of the world that just enjoying it and soaking up the gorgeous beaches, mountains and lakes is enough for me. I wouldn't swap it for anything else. World Record Attempt More than 26,000 Playmobil figures set up in war reenactment as part of world record attempt

If you thought this looked like a display with a cast of thousands, you'd be right - 26,000 to be precise. The amazing feat is the work of Jean-Michel Leuillier, a man who has put plastic figures in many interesting positions over the years. This Playmobil diorama is of the Battle of Zama, fought in 202 BC - and the model is about to beat the world record of the biggest diorama.

Set up in the sports hall of Heyrieux, southeastern France, it has been a labour of love for the 48-year-old, who is thought to be the world's largest collector of Playmobil. The Battle of Zama set 40,000 Carthaginians against 35,100 Romans, and brought the end of the 17-year Second Punic War with the Carthaginians' defeat. Jean-Michel said, "The Battle of Zama allows you to combine a number of different collections of Playmobil and this brings a diversity on the board. For the spectators come to enjoy the spectacle he had to have a multitude of different series. The enthusiast was first drawn to the figures when he was given five cowboys to comfort him following an appendix operation when he was just six. The agricultural engineer now has more than 330 cubic metres of small plastic figures. Whether it was a successful word record attempt or not - viewed by 10,000 visitors will be confirmed by Guinness World Records soon.

Prank Man scares colleagues witless by dressing up as bear and chasing them around building site A builder has pulled a hilarious prank on his unsuspecting colleagues - by dressing up as a bear and chasing them around a construction site. In the video, a man crouches behind a portable cabin dressed in a bear costume as one of his colleagues walks towards him. As the unsuspecting builder turns the corner, he spots the bear and immediately makes a run for it, yelling in terror. In the background, behind the camera, several other construction site workers can be heard laughing as they watch the man in the hi-vis jacket take off at speed towards a truck.

The bear steps out from its hiding place and crawls across the ground, before standing up on its hind legs and roaring loudly. Other terrified colleagues notice the commotion and also catch sight of the bear before quickly making their own escapes. The clip was uploaded to YouTube by Tommy Czubson and has been viewed more than 494,000 times since March 3. It is not clear where the footage was shot. YouTube viewers were understandable impressed by the prank, with one writing: "This is 100 times funnier than any traditional prank on YouTube." Another added: "Some say he's still running."

g n i z fe a i m L A ine fish l Mar Sai Sailfish get their name from their spectacular dorsal fin that stretches nearly the length of their body, but they are one of the scariest species of ocean-dwellers – they are strong enough to impale a human on their long bill The two main subspecies of sailfish, Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, range throughout the warm and temperate parts of the world’s oceans. They are blue to grey in colour with white underbellies. They are members of the billfish family and as such, have an upper jaw that juts out well beyond their lower jaw and forms a distinctive spear. They are found near the ocean surface, usually far from land, feeding on schools of

smaller fish like sardines and anchovies, which they often shepherd with their sails, making them easy prey. They also feast on squid, octopus, mackerels, tunas, jacks, halfbeaks, and needlefish – most of these from near the surface of the water. Sailfish in the Pacific region also feed on dolphin, ribbonfish and triggerfish. The meat of a sailfish is fairly tough and not widely eaten, but it is highly prized as game fish. These powerful, streamlined beasts can grow to more than 10 feet (3 metres) and weigh up to 220 pounds (100 kilograms).

La Vaqueria - Benamargosa In these days of political correctness, different fads and fashions etc. etc. it can be hard to keep up with what is "in" or "out". Recently I have noticed the words ecological and organic being bandied about with gay abandon - a vast step in the right direction in my book, especially considering that almost nobody understood the word vegitariano when I first came to Spain. At La Vaqueria we like to keep abreast of current trends (ish!) but in this case we are right up there without even trying. Our old cowshed has evolved organically, gradually growing from one quite bare room with me and a box of paints, which is how I started 12 years ago, to the lots of paints, paintings, classes, arty gift shop and our tea rooms style of refreshments. We sell all home made food most of which is ecological or organic and all locally produced, much of it actually grown here in our own raised beds. Many of our dishes are vegetarian and there is always some tasty freshly baked cake available. As more and more people started to visit so the garden started to grow...only small but a de-

lightful little oasis, very tranquil being just on the very outskirts of the village of Benamargosa, where village meets campo but before you head off into the campo! As we continue to become more popular we strive to increase the number of artworks on display, both indoors and out to keep your visits interesting and I hope, inspiring.. much of our garden art can be bought or we can teach you how to do it yourselves and I am always available to offer advice on your own projects if I can. Also we open during holidays and fiestas (Christmas being the exception) so if you are looking for something a bit different to do or somewhere new to take your guests take a little trip out to La Vaqueria and sample some of our ecological and organic hospitality! Axarquia Sol Aqua Solar Pool Pumps

It costs on average 1,300â‚Ź per year to run a pool pump 4-6 hours per day, in the summer months, possibly more!

From my building/engineering background of some 30 years, I looked at this problem, as turning your pump off is not a option, or is it? The solution I came up with was to install a German manufactured solar pump, with a high life expectancy, as it is brushless. This far exceeds most normal pump life by some 5 times. It is installed / plumbed alongside your existing pump, keeping this as a back up, seems common sense. A simple 3 panel solar array is installed, at a practical existing roof point. In full sunlight, the basic model pumps a little over 4,000 gallons per hour. For example: a 10m x 4.5m wide is approx. 14,298 imp gallons so in 3.5 hours it has filtered the whole pool for free. The average cost, fully installed, subject to survey is 3,500â‚Ź of which you would only pay to Endesa for the existing pumps electricity use in a 3 year period anyway. To register an interest in this and see a fully functional system, shortly to be fitted locally, near Lake Vinuela, email:

Please mention The Sentinella Earthquake Safety During an Earthquake: Indoor Safety If you are inside, stay inside. DO NOT run outside or to other rooms during shaking. In most situations, you will reduce your chance of injury from falling objects and even building collapse if you immediately: DROP down onto your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down. This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary.

PEACE OF MIND FOR LIFE Like it or not, one certainty in life is...we are all going to die. At this sad time your family would be pleased to know that you have had the foresight to have purchased a pre-paid funeral plan with Iberian Funeral Plans, giving

"PEACE OF MIND" for life’s final event.

Benefits include;

COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under the shelter of a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

1. Funeral costs are fixed for life, no matter how long you live.

hOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around. Drop! Cover! Hold On!

3. Removes pressure from loved ones at a time of emotional stress.

DO NOT stand in a doorway. You are safer under a table. In modern houses, doorways are no stronger than any other part of the house. The doorway does not protect you from the most likely source of injury−falling or flying objects. Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are caused by falling or flying objects (e.g., TVs, lamps, glass, bookcases), or by being knocked to the ground. You can take other actions, even while an earthquake is happening, that will reduce your chances of being hurt. If possible within the few seconds before shaking intensifies, quickly move away from glass and hanging objects, and bookcases, china cabinets, or other large furniture that could fall. Watch for falling objects, such as bricks from fireplaces and chimneys, light fixtures, wall hangings, high shelves, and cabinets with doors that could swing open. If available nearby, grab something to shield your head and face from falling debris and broken glass. If you are in the kitchen, quickly turn off the stove and take cover at the first sign of shaking. If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. You are less likely to be injured staying where you are. Broken glass on the floor has caused injury to those who have rolled to the floor or tried to get to doorways.

2. No health or age restrictions, unlike some insurances.

4. A fully operational and legally registered company. 5. Plan benefits are transferable to UK should you relocate in the future. 6. Prices start at 3,390€. 7. Payment can be made in full or by our interest free repayment scheme. 8. No obligation or pressure home visits by our experienced "mature" representatives.

Bhua Luang Thai Restaurant Review One cold winter’s evening, I was fed up trying to decide what to eat so I called a neighbour and we decided on a nice warming Thai meal at Bhua Luang in Torre del Mar to be precise.

right old giggle. Definitely worth a night out if Thai food is what you are looking for, or you are simply hankering for something different! See main advert below

Chris, Noi and their two children have lived in Spain for thirteen years and have run a Thai restaurant for six years in Archez and seven years ago relocated the restaurant and opened Bhua Luang in Torre del Mar. On arrival at the restaurant we were welcomed by Noi and Chris and shown to our table. We expressed our need to be warmed up on that chilly evening and were open to suggestions about what to eat. Chris suggested a few options but the Tom Kha soup was a definite to warm the cockles! For mains, Chris asked what kind of taste we liked. My taste buds were yearning for spring onion and ginger, so Chris suggested the duck. Wow, what a great recommendation! We had never seen so much duck in a dish before with lovely warming slivers of ginger and spring onion. It was so tasty that we made sure Noi and Chris knew our thoughts. We had a lovely evening, fantastic food and a

Spring Facts Spring into Spring! The vernal equinox is the first day of the year when we have twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of night. If you stand at the equator on the first day of spring, you will see the sun pass directly over head. This only happens twice a year; first day of spring and the first day of autumn. Baby birds learn to sing during spring. Although they are born with the ability to sing, they must learn the specific songs of their species. They often learn their songs within two months of being born. You may have heard that today is the only day you can stand a raw egg on its end. It's not true. Balancing an egg on its end is possible, but it works equally well any day of the year. Arizona and Hawaii do not follow daylight savings. They already have enough sunlight and hot weather, so it doesn't make sense to confuse the sleeping cycle of their residents.

The Great Sphinx in Egypt points directly East towards the sunrise on the vernal equinox. Spring fever is a real syndrome. When the temperature rises during the warm spell after a long winter, there is a dilation of the blood vessels so blood can be carried to the body surface where heat can be lost quickly. People experience an energetic feeling when this happens.

Martin quits TV chef James Martin has told how his BBC show ended up a kitchen nightmare after budget cuts. The Saturday Kitchen star, 43, has quit the series after 10 years as host and will film his last show next month. And, speaking on his personal tour Plates, Mates & Automobiles, he joked that he was off the leash and finally able to reveal how the programme became food hell. Asked why the show stopped inviting members of the public to join himself and celebrities, he said: “That wasn’t my decision. I liked having the studio guests. It was the BBC’s decision.” Throwing his hands in the air, he added: “Budget cuts... and don’t look at me, I didn’t get a pay rise.” James also said the studio sink didn’t work for two years and he had to pretend to wash his hands. Guest chefs will fill in for him until a full time replacement is found. Loved up One Direction star Liam Payne has confirmed his relationship with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini by changing his Instagram profile picture to an intimate selfie of the couple. The black and white snap shows the new couple looking very close and looking into the camera - by the background it looks like the hot pairing may even be in bed. Liam, 22, is topless and cougar Cheryl looks gorgeous with her hair swept back. The 1D star also changed his profile description to simply say "happy." The couple were also spotted – allegedly – shopping together at Tesco in Guildford at midnight, loading their trolley with pet food. The picture appeared on several internet sites, prompting speculation that they were considering their options for a new animal addition to complete their whirlwind romance.

Liam reportedly snapped up a £5million mansion in Woking at the beginning of 2015, so it's not unlikely that he could have visited the supermarket in nearby Guildford.

Brain surgery TV’s former ‘Apprentice’ star and ‘This Morning’ regular Katie Hopkins has been showing off her ‘monster scar’ after a 12-hour brain operation. Doctors wanted to remove a lesion that has caused her to have fits since she was 19. Katie said: “My husband says it doesn’t look too bad.” “I have gained a chance of a longer life.”

Award-winning presenter Dermot O’Leary is odds-on to return to The X Factor later this year after reportedly being told he could name his own price. TV bosses – including Simon Cowell whose Syco company owns the rights – are desperate to halt the slide in viewing figures, which reached an all-time low last season when gaffe-prone duo Caroline Flack and Olly Murs took over as presenters. An insider said: “Dermot will come back to The X Factor. Talks are underway on his deal but everything is positive. “Everyone, including Dermot and Simon, has the will to make it work.” One source told how Dermot is now in a much more powerful position than before he left. And the insider added he could front the show for the rest of its life-span. The insider said: “Producers have realised you can’t take any risks with the presenter of the show. “You need someone really good who can cope with live TV. It is a massive skill and there are not many people who have it.”

Wines From - Germany : My Choice WORTHY WINES: GERMANY Germany cultivates numerous grape varietals for wine productions. On this occasion I have focused on Riesling, as wines produced using this variety of grape are experiencing worldwide popularity, once again. The high-quality of Riesling wines stands as testament to the knowledge and expertise, which are part of the process, for these splendid productions. The VDP (Association of German Pradikat Wine Estates) ensures cultivation of the best terroirs and grape varietals, with strict guidelines, for the productions to feature the VDP logo.

this indication, on these wine productions, ensures a very fine standard of quality. Crescentia Premium Wines are produced using grape varieties from the best vineyards. Excellent bouquets and superb palate sensations, from wines produced by a company dedicated to perfection and high

Renowned for its classic aroma, the character and elegance of Riesling wines pair perfectly with fish, poultry and numerous dishes. Many award-winning German wine producers export worldwide. Full details of these producers can be found on the individual websites. As always, Enjoy! Weingut Baron Knyphausen has a range of excellent Riesling wines. Their land and winery was acquired during 1818, by ancestors of the family. The estate, which accommodates today’s winery, was founded by Cistecian monks in 1141. Weingut Baron Knyphausen has produced the first Rheingauer Gemischter Satz in decades. This is an excellent, impressive production, for bouquet and palate sensations. Their range includes splendid Kabinett Baron K, plus Golden Riesling and superb Auslese and Spätlese wines. These, I found, most able to satisfy all palates. A company dedicated to producing high-quality wines, with wonderful structure and balance. Weingut Bürgerspital, one of the oldest and largest German wine estates, has a grand range of Riesling wines. I found the Silvaner trocken suited my palate, with the enticing bouquet leading to a superb mouthfeel and excellent palate sensation. Spätlese and several other splendid wines are amongst their range, which has something for all preferences. Highquality productions from a committed company Weingut Kloster Eberbach has an excellent range of Riesling wines. The Eberbach Monastery was founded in 1136. The Eberbach monks established a cabinet wine cellar – Cabinetkellar – for their finest wines. Today,

& t i u Fr Facts routs p Veg Bean S There is a lot more to the humble bean sprout than just something to accompany a Chinese meal! In fact, bean sprouts have been used for centuries for their nutritional and medical benefits They can be eaten raw or lightly cooked, or they can be juiced. The flavour varies from sweet delicate to sharp intense, depending on the type of sprout.

ticularly helpful in preventing and treating hair and nail problems. Mung bean sprouts are an excellent source of lecithin which, besides lowering blood cholesterol levels, helps reduce liver fat, thereby preventing fatty liver, a common liver condition that can result in liver dysfunction. Mung bean sprouts are rich in phytoestrogens, which have a weak oestrogen-like activity. That’s why they can help relieve many symptoms associated with menopause (such as hot flushes and heart palpitations), which are the result of decreased oestrogen levels. Phyto oestrogens found in mung bean sprouts are also effective in counteracting menopause-related osteoporosis.

Sprouts from all beans and/or seeds are so high in highly digestible nutrients, vitamins and minerals that they can be considered true multi-ingredient natural supplements. Mung bean sprouts are the most commonly consumed sprouts all over the world and the most studied by researchers, but a variety of many other beans and seeds can also be sprouted, including alfalfa seeds, sunflower seeds, kidney beans, white beans, peas, lentils and adzuki beans. Mung bean sprouts (as well as other types of bean sprouts) are rich in iron, which play a key role in the synthesis of haemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells. They are also particularly high in vitamin C, which enhances the absorption of iron from the intestine, thereby helping prevent or treat anaemia caused by iron deficiency. When associated with a low intake of saturated fats (found in meat, poultry and dairy products), the regular consumption of mung bean sprouts can help reduce the blood levels of LDL-cholesterol due to its content in fibre and lecithin. This effect is beneficial to the heart and vessels, since it helps prevent the development of atherosclerosis, the most common cause of cardiovascular disease. Due to their high content in fibre, mung bean sprouts can help improve intestinal motility and relieve the signs of constipation. Hair and nail fragility is often the result of certain nutritional deficiencies – especially proteins, vitamins and zinc. Mung bean sprouts contain high amounts of all these nutrients in a readily available form, and hence they are par-

Thoughts Of Oana The nine days I spent with my mum just ended and today I took her to the airport where our "Goodbyes" were a bit painful. Our first night was emotional as she never expected me to wait for her at the airport with Afterflowers. wards, we talked for about three hours before we fell asleep. We had a great time together and she was happy that she got to know all my friends Every here. morning started the same: we had coffee on the terrace, and then off to the beach for a walk. After that, I would go to work at Legends, and she came with me for tea and a cake. To be honest, while my mum was here,

I've put some weight on as she prepared all the food that I like and can't cook! So, as a reward, I took her to the nail shop so she could have her manicure done – which by the way, she loved! The weather was a bit weird while she was here, but we didn't bother too much about it as the main thing was that we were together. In her second day here, I took her to Malaga and showed her the town. She loved the port and the old bit from the centre. I tried to make her go on the big wheel, but she quit before setting foot on it. The rest of the time we just enjoyed each other's company. She has promised she will come back to Spain soon, so I've already had a look for flights. I hope you had a great Easter time with your families, and that the Easter bunny brought you lots of chocolate eggs. Xxxx Trambitasu Oana Maria

People Who Come And Go People Who Come And Go: Maureen and Bill, Canillas de Aceituno After 13 years of rural life, Maureen and Bill are ready to move and their house is now available for a new couple to take on the reins. Maureen tells us about their experience. “We have lived in our house in Canillas de Aceituno since 2003 after giving up work– we were looking for total peace, a little place away from it all and we certainly found it here! When we bought it, it had never been occupied so it was a blank page for us to work with. There was no garden, simply a bare plot with a house sitting on it surrounded by a sea of weeds, so there was lots of work to do to establish a home and garden. We installed a beautiful kitchen and improved a very basic bathroom, and a short time later, a pool in the garden, which has been a wonderful asset in the hot summer months. Our country location means the only people we see daily is the mule man on his way to his land and later in the day the goat herder with his goats and the wonderful sound of their bells as they graze - real, rural Spain!!

Our local village has always made us so welcome and we have made many Spanish friends who have been so supportive, and in the early days very patient with our feeble attempts at Spanish! Now we feel is the right time for a new adventure and a different way of life, so a move to the coast beckons. I would recommend life here in Andalusia for anyone looking for a better quality of life at a slower pace. But a note of caution... be careful when the local farmers offer you their ‘vino del terreno’ made from their own grapes, its stronger than you think!!!!” By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advertisement below)

Imagine Saving Every Penny You Have Ever Had! When Ira Keys was young, his father gave the 17 year old some advice. Whatever you do son, save your money. Ira took that piece of advice very seriously. He didn’t have much money back in the 1950s, so he saved all of his pennies, that’s 65 years to be exact — he just kept saving Year after year, he would keep his pennies in Folger’s coffee cans. Until finally, in 2015 he decided to cash them in. The pennies weighed a whopping 500 lbs. as he carted them into the bank. The tellers were blown away. “We take pennies for granted,” personal banker Kari Lewis told KCBD. “You see them on the ground and you’re kind of like, ‘Oh, I’m not picking that up,’ but for him to collect it for years and years was pretty amazing.” In total, Keys managed to save 81,600 pennies or $816. Not bad. I think we could all use an extra $816. He plans to build a room divider

and decorate it with the shiny pennies to commemorate the good advice his father gave. However, he plans to start up a new piggy bank. “It’s just a habit I’ve got into, and habits are hard to break sometimes,” he joked. “But I don’t think I’ll have this many when I cash them in again.” My Late New Year’s Resolution Starts Today!! :)

After being abducted seven years ago, a young woman is held captive in a sparsely furnished and cramped suburban garden shed along with her now-kindergarten-aged son. Repeatedly raped and without access to the outside world save for a rickety TV with spotty reception, she plots their escape from the monster who has imprisoned them. Based on Irish-Canadian author Emma Donoghue's award-winning 2010 novel that was inspired by similar real-life crimes, is not just a simple tale of terror. Instead, “Room" is a celebration of the impenetrable bond that en-

dures even under the most unbearable of circumstances between a parent and a child. One of the best things about “Room is how such an intimate film manages to raise some big questions. What defines us as a person? What do we really need to live? Why are kids so astonishingly resilient when under duress? What happens when all your troubles disappear yet contentment persists in being an illusion? And what does a parent do when their child begins to outgrow their need for them?
