I class myself as a bit of a ‘Moving House Specialist’. After living in Spain for 11 years, I have moved house a joyous eight times and yes, I’m on the move again!

As I am writing this I am packing boxes — which comes very naturally to me — and at the same time I’m reminiscing about each of the eight places I have stayed in. Some were good houses, some were bad and some just turned out to be downright ugly! Some had good landlords, some had OK landlords and one had a non-existent landlord — which turned out to be worst by far — so I’ve experienced them all! These are the joys of renting I suppose.

But I love the whole moving process. I love the feeling of a new house, new neighbours, new area, new drive home from the everyday things like the school run which can all become a bit monotonous day in and day out.

I find it to be a bit like Christmas too — finding things in the back of cupboards that you forgot you even had. I even found 35€ in the pocket of a jacket that I was about to throw out!

And when you have a task of moving within two weeks, the excitement is even more magical. It’s time to leave the old memories behind and make some better ones. To be honest, this is probably the move I have been most excited about, as the house was like living in a solarium most of the year — too hot to work, too hot to eat, too hot to sleep and even too hot just to generally live!

The other plus side I have noticed about moving is that you always seem to find something bigger and better; the kids will be happy too as they now get a bedroom each.

Swimming free A goldfish that survived a house fire having been revived by a firefighter has died at the age of 18.

Rusty’s 92-year-old owner Ena Woolford won him at the Ruthin Farmers Auction in Denbighshire, North Wales, in November 1999.

In 2015, Ena’s microwave caught fire while she was in hospital, causing severe smoke damage to her home. Rusty was found floating on his side, but a firefighter brought him back to life, Ena said.

‘The other morning I got up and and he’d died. It’s very sad but he had a good life, and I felt a bit silly admitting to be missing a goldfish, but he’s left a big space in the tank!’

Ena is keeping Rusty in her freezer so that her great grandson can say a proper goodbye.

A SWEET-TOOTHED bride has walked up the aisle in Sydney, Australia, holding a bouquet made out of doughnuts.

Paige Kirk loves doughnuts so much she wanted them to be part of her wedding and she had the bouquet decorated with ivory icing to match her dress.

Her bridesmaids also carried similarly unusual bouquets.

De Cotta Law Selling property Clients who own property in Spain are often concerned about both the taxes they will pay on sale and the transfer of their funds after sale. For British clients there can be the additional worry about converting the funds into Sterling from Euros. If you are considering selling it is a good idea to get legal advice early on so that you can make a decision about sale price, taxes and costs, and converting your currency.

In a number of transactions between British people we have been able to undertake the transaction in sterling, provided the Notary is satisfied they have evidence of the payment for the sale. Generally the costs to the seller are the local improvement or plus valia tax, payable to the Town Hall, and any Capital Gains Tax (CGT) at 19%.

If there is a mortgage on the property which will be paid off on sale, your lawyer will ensure that the bank is available on the day of signing the deed to cancel the mortgage.

All other debts such as Community of Owners bills, utilities etc can be settled on the day or retentions made to cover these costs.

For non-residents there is also a 3% retention on the sale price which is on account of CGT. The purchaser has a legal and fiscal obligation to lodge this money with the tax authority. If you have not made a capital gain and are up to date with your non-resident taxes you can apply for the return of this 3%.

Your lawyer can arrange this but in some cases you may have to wait some months before the return of the funds.

If you are not able to be in Spain on the day of sale you can grant a Spanish form Power of attorney to lawyers to act for you and to sign the Notarial deed. There is still some uncertainty about the obligation to pay plus valia to the Town Hall when you make a loss on the sale. Each case has to be treated on its merits, as although some Town Halls are still requiring payment, some appear to accept that if the value of the land has not increased during your ownership and you have made a loss you do not have to pay.

-It is essential for a doctor to certify the death and for him to give the family a “medical death certificate” -Where is the deceased taken? Once the person has passed away and the death certificate has been signed, the deceased is removed to a funeral parlour.

-Can we see the deceased? Relatives will be able to see the deceased person as many times as they wish while the deceased is in the facilities of Grupo ASV Servicios Funerarios.

Funeral services for Expatriates -How long does the funeral service last? The duration of the funeral service in Spain can be adapted to the customs of the deceased person’s family. If the family needs time to regroup and prepare a meaningful funeral ceremony, Grupo ASV Servicios Funerarios will keep the deceased for as long as it might be necessary.

-What kind of ceremonies can be organised?

Grupo ASV Servicios Funerarios can organise a personalised ceremony with a celebrant, who will reach an agreement with the family on how to carry out an emotional farewell ceremony suited to their requirements. Also, for religious ceremonies we maintain regular contact with the representatives of different religions who will carry out a funeral in accordance with each family’s religious beliefs.

-Who Is obliged to pay for the service? If the deceased has a Funeral Plan or it is covered by an Insurance company, Grupo ASV Servicios Funerarios is responsible for contacting the corresponding company and resolving all matters referring to the cover for the service. If the deceased party has not subscribed to these services, then his or her family will take over responsibility for the service.

-Can the deceased party be repatriated? Yes, once the family decides to carry out the funeral service in the country of origin, Grupo ASV Servicios Funerarios will be responsible for taking all the necessary steps to repatriate the deceased to the destination specified.

Authorities in Spain and official authorities in the deceased person's country of origin have to be notified with information on the date and cause of death, and they must be informed when the process has ended. They will issue all the certificates and documents which have to be legally given to the family, including the international death certificate. With these documents, the family will then be able to begin the relevant inheritance and pensions processes. The time it takes to issue the death certificate varies depending on the area where the death has taken place.

Linea Directa Spanish points-based licence system The Spanish points system gives 8 points to drivers who have held a licence for less than 3 years and 12 points for drivers who have held it for over 3 years. If no traffic offences are committed after 3 years drivers receive an additional 3 points. A point is awarded every subsequent 3-year period up to a maximum of 15 points. Drivers can recuperate points by completing a re-education course of 12 hours or a 24 hour course if drivers have lost all their points.

Once the course is passed successfully drivers are awarded 8 points on their licence.

What is covered?

Under Línea Directa’s Traffic Fine Handling service, the policy holder or owner of the insured vehicle as well as any other drivers legally entitled to drive the vehicle can benefit up to a maximum of €500 of the cost of traffic re-education and awareness course, as well as the fees payable in connection with the driving licence recovery test.

How are points deducted?

Drivers will lose 6 points if under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other illegal substances. Reckless driving, refusing to take a breathalysing test or drugs test, driving over 50% of the speed limit.

And drivers will lose 4 points for putting other drivers at risk, throwing objects on the road that could cause accidents or fire, exceeding limits by over 40kph, endangering cyclists, illegally parking, exceeding maximum passenger capacity by 50%.

Driving without a seatbelt, using a mobile phone and not keeping a safe driving distance will result in a 3 point fine.

How reimbursement works Línea Directa will decide whether payment shall be made to the beneficiary directly or by means of reimbursement upon delivery or the relevant proof of payment.

Exclusions and limitations Cover shall be provided only once during each policy period.

Only penalty points lost in connection with the insured vehicle and for a reason not excluded in the policy shall be taken into account.

Claimants must notify Línea Directa within 3

months of the notification date of points loss or licence disqualification.

Cover shall not be provided in the event of disqualification if the beneficiary is given a guilty verdict.

Any loss of points arising from legal infringements or criminal acts are excluded.

Drivers must pass the driving licence recovery course on first attempt to qualify for cover.

Axarquia Solicitors Law Office HOW IS A FOREIGN PENSION TREATED FOR TAX PURPOSES IN SPAIN? All foreigners residing in Spain who are currently receiving a pension for services rendered, (whether a public or private pension), from their countries of origin, should declare this income in their tax declaration form in the monetary compensation section under income from work, only of course when they are obliged to file an income tax return form.

It is important to note that all tax residents in Spain must declare their total personal global income for taxation, irrespective of the source of that income.

Normally foreign pensions are not included in the drafts sent by the Treasury, but you must bear in mind that foreign pensions are taxed in the monetary compensation section, and are considered as income from work.

Therefore, it is an obligation to include your pension/s in the annual declaration.

However, it is necessary to take into account the corresponding Double Taxation Agreements, which prevail over Spanish Law. Most of the agreements to prevent Double Taxation which Spain signed with other countries establish the following rules with respect to pensions:- Generally, no tax is paid in Spain for PUBLIC PENSIONS received, for example, for having worked as an official abroad.

These should be taxed in the country in which they are paid. They should be exempt from tax in Spain, however, there are exceptions.

Agreements for example with Germany and the United Kingdom establish that these public pensions should be taken into account in the Spanish Income Tax Declaration which means that by this inclusion, the tax rate applied to the total income would be higher.

- ALL PRIVATE PENSIONS from private employment, even when paid by the social security department of another country, must be declared in Spain, Most of the Agreements signed stipulate that they should only be taxed in the country of residence.

What is clear is that the Spanish Tax Office is receiving consistently more and more comprehensive information on pensions paid by other countries to residents in Spain, so it does not make sense to omit them in your income tax return, when officially they should be declared. This improvement in procedures for exchanging information with other countries and public administrations, especially with those in Europe, allows the Tax Office to acquire tax information that could not be accessed before, and for this reason, the tax office could claim outstanding debts due to non-taxation when foreign pensions have not been declared, and these debts could be backdated to 2012.

In addition, it would be appropriate for all foreign pensioners who are tax residents in Spain to provide the Tax Authorities of their countries of origin with a Tax Residence Certificate from the Spanish Tax Offices thus avoiding the necessity of paying taxes in that country and only paying your taxes in one place, your country of residence, Spain.

Here is a question for all you people who want to sell a property. Do you think estate agents should spend lots of money on exhibitions and High Street offices or should it be spent on the Internet? You may say ‘Spend everywhere’. That would work, of course, but realistically, the money needs to be spent where it is most effective. In the past, local offices gave vendors confidence to list their properties for sale and, as with exhibitions, generated a certain amount of sales - but this gave very limited exposure, which was fine when there wasn’t a better alternative. However, nowadays all this parochial marketing activity is at the expense of spending more money where potential buyers are concentrating their efforts – on the Internet.

American actor Tom Selleck, who was born on January 29, 1945, first appeared on TV in 1967 on The Dating Game when, incredibly, he lost. Later, he appeared in TV commercials for products which included Pepsi-Cola.

He starred in six failed TV pilots before landing his breakthrough role in Magnum PI, which headed the ratings in the 1980s. He played the charming and quirky Hawaii-based private investigator Thomas Magnum, a role he also took into the series Simon and Simon in 1981 and Murder She Wrote in 1984.

His most famous trademarks were his distinctive moustache, Hawaiian shirts and hairy chest.

Selleck, who stands at over 6’3”, was originally cast as “Indiana Jones”, but was not able to take the role because he was committed to Magnum PI. However his own series did a parody episode — Magnum, PI: Legend of the Lost Art (1988) — complete with an “Indiana” hat, whip and booby traps.

In addition to his series work, Selleck has appeared in more than 50 made-for-TV and general release movies, including Mr. Baseball (1992), Quigley Down Under (1990), Lassiter (1984) and, his most successful movie release, 3 Men and a Baby (1987), which was the highest grossing movie in 1987.

When he "won" a Worst Supporting Actor Razzie® Award for his role in Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992), Selleck became one of the first stars ever to accept the $4.97 dis-honour.

He is still acting and producing both in films and for TV, and is also active in politics where he professes to be “independent”.

He shaved off his trademark moustache for the 1997 film In & Out (1997). Once rarely seen without it, he has since kept it off for most of his stage and screen work.

He and his family maintain their primary residence in Thousand Oaks, California, but also have secondary properties in Freedom, California; Jonesboro, Maine, and in the Shetland Isles.

He has been married twice and has a daughter, Hannah — who is an international showjumper — from his second marriage, to Jillie Mack.

Selleck received an honorary doctorate from Pepperdine University for his “outstanding character and ethic,” and is a board member of the non-profit Michael Josephson Institute of Ethics. He was also an active member of the California National Guard.

Preventing Back Pain: Getting To The Core Developing strong abdominal muscles may actually help prevent back pain by making you less prone to back injuries and teaching you proper spinal alignment If you think about it, your core is in the centre of your body. It needs to be strong to support the weight of your entire body, including your back and neck. Adding core strengthening to your exercise routine can help protect your back and neck. By boosting your core strength, you'll also be less likely to rely on other back pain treatments, such as medications. These are an example of some of the exercises you can do: Plank, how to do it: 1. Begin on the floor on your hands and knees.

2. Now walk out your hands a few inches in front of you and lower onto your elbows. You should feel your core contract to help support you. Be sure to concentrate on drawing in your belly button toward your spine.

3. Hold for as long as you can, working up to 30 seconds to a minute.

Back arch, how to do it: 1. Begin lying face-down on the floor, using a mat or blanket for cushioning.

2. Stretch your arms out in front of you, then lift one arm, along with your head and opposite leg, about two inches off the floor.

3. Be sure to really squeeze your glutes, which can help remove some of the pressure from your low back. Also, pretend there is a marble in your belly button and squeeze that hard, too.

4. Lower and repeat on the opposite side for five reps on each side.

Second Hand Homes Are Selling Again!

How it affects you The local newspapers are brimming with articles about the recovery of the housing market and whilst the majority of these are Spanish owned flats and town houses, this has a direct knock-on effect on country and village houses in the whole area.

According to the reports, property sales in general in Malaga province were up by 19% between January and June this year. This is very good news for the economy and for anyone thinking of selling. And according to the latest OMAU report (Observatorio de Medio Ambiente Urbano) the sale of second hand homes was highest on the Eastern side of Malaga, up by a massive 33%, compared with 13% in the capital and 10.5% on to the West of Malaga. New build is stronger on the Western side, than in Eastern Malaga, although there is plenty of evidence of new buildings appearing, and all those cranes that have been long abandoned and rusting on dusty, deserted building sites are now being

oiled and wheeled out onto new, active building sites in the towns and on urban plots along the coast.

When the Spanish buy and sell their houses, they also trigger movement in the villages and countryside, helping many of the foreign residents to sell their properties. However, we must be cautious, buyers are internet-wise and better informed than the previous generation of buyers, and there is still plenty of ‘old stock’ to clear from the market, so prices of country houses and traditional village houses are not likely to gallop upwards in the foreseeable future. We still need to be offering our houses at a market-acceptable price. But things are definitely on the move and for many who have had their houses for sale for a while now, the possibility of selling is finally more realistic!

Monthly Baking Blog By Susan Jane Sticky Toffee Date Cake With the 5th November almost upon us what better bake for this time of year than this deliciously moist ‘Sticky toffee Date Cake’ - a great accompaniment at any bonfire night party.

As with all my blog bakes the recipes are always tried and tested before being blogged;- on the day this cake had a trial run, a couple of my neighbours popped round for a quick coffee and ended up devouring the lot. So I guess I can take that as a ‘thumbs up’. What is even more difficult to believe about this recipe is that the little toffee tasting bites are actually the soaked and chopped dates, so quite a healthy cake really.

This cake is great cold but can also be heated through and served with ice cream, custard or cream as a sticky toffee pudding.

Ingredients: 200g of dried dates 275ml of boiling water 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 175g soft light brown sugar 150g butter, room temperature 3 eggs, beaten 175g self raising flour

Method: 1. Pour the boiling water over three-quarters of the dates 2. Leave to soak for 30 minutes 3. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees C 4. Cream the butter, sugar and the soaked dates (including the ‘soaking’ water) 5. Add the eggs then stir in the self raising flour and bicarbonate of soda 6.Finally stir in the remaining un-soaked dates 7. Pour into a 20cm/8” square lined cake tin 8. Bake for 40 minutes until firm to the touch 9. Allow to cool, cut into squares and serve

Charity Spa Day Twice a year, local therapists and beauticians give their expertise at a charity spa day to help raise money for Los Angeles de la Noche food kitchen in Malaga The next one is scheduled for 11th November at hotel las Orquideas in los Romanes.

Each treatment lasts 40 minutes and costs 20€. Treatments include aromatherapy, reiki, reflexology and massage.

The total raised by these spa days in the last few years is now over €4,300.

Love A Child Foundation Love A Child Foundation would like to inform all its donors and supporters that John Margetson and Lynne Carr-Jones will be retiring from the foundation at the end of this year.

The foundation has now completed all its overseas projects and will not be taking on any further projects or sponsors. We have a small number of children that are still sponsored and we will continue to support these children.

Michael attempts to sit down but the frame is too small and when he can't squeeze in, he complains "Nobody would fit in that little frame".

O'Leary swore to himself, but paid up.

"I see that you have brought your laptop with you" added the barman. "And since that wasn't pre-booked either, that will be another £3."

O'Leary was so incensed that he walked back to the bar, slammed his drink on the counter, and yelled, "This is ridiculous, I want to speak to the manager".

"I see you want to use the counter," says the barman, "That will be £2 please."

O'Leary's face was red with rage. "Do you

know who I am?"

"Of course I do Mr. O'Leary."

"I've had enough! What sort of a Hotel is this?

I come in for a quiet drink and you treat me like this. I insist on speaking to a manager!"
