OBITUARIES

BEN YARRINGTON Benjamin Kenneth Yarrington was born in an upstairs bedroom in his grandparents’ house on September 8, 1932, to Elsie Burtch Yarrington and Kenneth Yarrington. During his birth, his

grandfather, Benjamin Burtch, was being buried. Both events occurred on the family dairy farm in Bentley, Michigan. He lived the remainder of his childhood in Midland, Michigan where his father worked at DOW Chemical. In his childhood he was surrounded by a loving extended family. Along with his parents and two sisters, he was close to many cousins and aunts and uncles. Ben lost his father when he was only 15 years old when his father was hit by a car while he was stopped to help someone on the side of the road. Upon graduation from Midland High School, he went on to Graceland College to work on a degree in business. He met his fu-

ture wife, Anna Lou Andersen, at Graceland. The married couple stayed in Lamoni, Iowa following their time at Graceland. Ben bought a bakery and worked hard in that business until he had to admit defeat due to an allergy to flour. He moved back to Midland, Michigan at that time where he worked for the Midland Police Force for several years. Ben and Ann were blessed with three children; Benna Lynn was born in Lamoni and Lu Anna and Kenneth Charles, who were both born in Midland, Michigan. He eventually decided that he wanted to pursue a degree in Social Work, which he accomplished at Michigan State University while he worked for the campus police. With his degree in Social work, he worked for several agencies sequentially which included, The Big Brothers Association, Easter Seals Society and United Cerebral Palsy. His directorship of United Cerebral Palsy for the State of Iowa required a move from Michigan to Iowa. After a few years in Iowa, he became the administrator for the Comprehensive Health Planning Office for the State of Iowa. His last and longest job was as the Executive Director of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. He did the course work for a Masters Degree in Public Administration at Drake University during his work at ILEA. Ben felt a passion for every job that he undertook. He researched and studied the different areas so that he could best serve each unique population that was involved. He respected and appreciated the individuals that he worked with, which included many people who were afflicted with Cerebral Palsy. Everyone he worked with seemed to enjoy his sense of humor, his feeling of camaraderie and strong work ethic. Upon retirement, he and Ann moved to Lamoni, Iowa to be close to grandchildren. It was in Lamoni where his much loved partner in life died in 2010, leaving Ben feeling lost and lonely. Fortunately, he was soon blessed with the company of his

times of dire emergencies. Also retiring was her companion, Barry Peterson, who completed the same amount of time with the county. First as Deputy Sheriff and most recently as an auxiliary officer that helped with prisoner transport.

Both Nancy and Barry plan to enjoy retirement at their local acreage and spend time traveling. Pictured l-r – Sheriff Ben Boswell, Chief Deputy Sheriff Chris Lane, Daiker and Peterson.

second wife, Barbara Daily, who brought him much laughter and loving companionship. An ever increasing leg weakness which caused frequent falls resulted in Ben needing care at local nursing homes. While in the nursing homes, he showed an interest in the people around him just as he always had, striking up conversations, asking people about themselves and joking around. He developed affection for his caregivers and his fellow residents. He passed away on his birthday, September 8, 2021, while residing in the Lamoni Specialty Care Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie and Kenneth Yarrington and of course many aunts, uncles and cousins, sister-inlaw, Bonna Brooks, and brothers-in-law, Ron Howdyshell and Don Kauffman. He leaves behind his sisters, Judy Graffeo (Everette) and Carol Howdyshell; his children, Benna Easter (Mark), Lu Anna Olson (Jim) and Kenneth Yarrington (Paula); grandchildren, Benjamin Easter (Mehgan), Dan Easter (Ann), Michael Easter (Sarah),

My goal is to support and lead the school in providing a broadbased education that will support young people into becoming successful citizens in the workplace. I am more concerned that the students can balance a checkbook or process a will then writing a thesis or calculating radical expressions.

I was asked about my opinion on “Mask and vaccination mandates.”

My answer is: “‘Mask or no mask, shots or no shots,’ that decision falls on the parent and their doctor but it cannot put the health of other students at risk.”

MARGARET GIBSON Halloween is coming up this weekend! Do you have your treats ready? Your costume? Let’s hope the weather is more accommodating so the trick-or-treaters can get out and fill their bags and buckets with tasty treats! Donna Ogier enjoyed a quiet week around her place. She did have a very hungry female cat show up. Donna was kind enough to feed it some groceries and helped her fill out. It was a kitty she had not seen before but she said it was quite affectionate and loved the attention and responded with lots of purring before she was off again on another adventure. Silly kitty did not know how good she had it at Donna’s house! Maybe she’ll be back. Shout out hello to Linda and Larry Wilcoxson in Arizona! Had a message from them last week that they subscribe to the

Lamoni Chronicle and enjoy reading the Andover News! Liz Carpenter made a trip to Bethany on Friday to get some repairs completed on her Durango. She is happy to have it back in good working order. Alma Mickelson got to watch her daughter Isa do some cheering at a Graceland game last week. Go Isa! Clay Parkhurst and Breanna Main had another birthday party for Kaislyn. Her age is the second prime number. Happy Birthday, Kaislyn! Well, life is not all play and birthday parties. Clay had to work all week and Breanna had clinicals and class all week. Ivan Lane stayed close to home last week and watched it rain quite a bit over the weekend. Holly and Benson Parkhurst went to cousin Kaislynn’s 2nd birthday party Saturday. Kim and Maurice Erwin had a busy week combining beans and baking 300 tumblers and, of course, the never-ending chores that come with life on a farm. Hope they manage to get a few hours rest every now and then. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and the Chiefs winning ways did not last long. Not sure what is wrong but they sure need to get it figured out. We are almost to mid-season! Go Chiefs!

Junior Vincent Carcamo finished 3rd (17:33) in what was a special race as he continues to just get better. This is his second appearance at state. It's been exciting to watch him progress in his confidence at the end of the season. If Vincent continues to race like this it's a game changer for CD as his ceiling is very high. Junior Gunner Smith raced aggressively over the hills to get 7th and individually qualify as well. Gunner has continued his medal streak-medaling

Vincent Carcamo and Gunner Smith become only the 5th and 6th boys to ever qualify individually for CD. Cardinal Cross Country (continued from page 8) him better. This is his second appearance. Sophomore Joe Sheetz has become extremely reliable for us finishing in 15th (19:00) and closed the door on the competition as our final scoring runner. Joe continues to grow as a fierce competitor and will be appearing at state for a second year in a row. Senior Isaiah Brunk finished 24th (19:40) in a great race as our 6th man and really has stepped up when we needed him this year. His confidence is also very high entering a state meet for his first appearance. Junior Junior Oesch rounded out the varsity efforts in 25th (19:52). He wasn't feeling the best but will look to rebound at the state meet in his second appearance and has been a key contributor for us the last couple years. Boys' Top 5 Team Scores with the top 2 qualifying for State: 1st Central Decatur - 37; 2nd St. Alberts - 47; 3rd Tri Center - 85; 4th Riverside - 114; and 5th Heartland Christian 140. The girls qualified for state as a team for the first time by finishing 2nd. The race itself was exciting and dramatic with the outcome very much in doubt. The girls were locked in a very difficult battle for the final team spot with Tri Center. At the halfway point of the race we were down around 17 points. At that point, Tri Center had the leader of the race and 3 more girls with our #2 and it didn't look good. Our girls are fighters though and kept fighting for spots. They did

for her. I was impressed that her mind was so determined going into this race and that she fought the entire way. Freshman Makenna Perkins is a good hill runner and consistent performer for us and finished 25th (25:10). She is also having a

great freshman season and in the final mile she caught and beat Tri Center's 5th runner to cap off the dramatic point swing. Jamie Oesch (30th26:25) closed out the varsity efforts battling for spots on that difficult course which de-

not physically or mentally collapse over the final hills as some other teams did and created almost a 30 point swing in the final 3-4 minutes. The girls ran with a lot of heart and all gained spots in the final mile. Junior Harrisen Bevan led a trio of individual qualifiers in 4th place (21:40). With a mile to go, Harrisen was around 6th and runner for runner we were down to Tri Center. Harrisen started an unbelievable sequence of events as she caught Tri Center's #1. Sophomore Hadley Bell would then get their #2 and had her individual qualifying moment by finishing 9th (22:28). Hadley ran very close to that position the whole race. She did a great job of being aware of where she had to be and is strong over the hills. Sophomore Aniston Jones dramatically captured the final state qualifying spot individually in 10th (22:34). She was 15th with a mile to go and there was a gap. Aniston is a strong hill runner and used that to catch Tri Center's 2-4 runners late in the race. Freshman Abigail Leahy (15th-23:37) stepped up big time Amy Potter recorded 2 solo blocks against I-35. for CD as a freshman and closed well with a On Monday, tinued to stretch the gutsy run. Seniors Say Goodbye With Victory Over Tigerhawks By Reece Hill Central Decatur closed out their football season last Friday hosting the ColfaxMingo Tigerhawks. The Cardinals fell behind early but responded well earning a 30-21 victory to end the season. The seniors who suited up for their final time all played big roles in the win. Unfortunately, two seniors were unable to play. Colton Barnes sat out due to an injury and William Gillis sat out in order to not risk injury as he will be running in the state cross country meet soon. The victory put their final record for the season at 5-4. Colfax-Mingo got on the board first with a passing touchdown and added the extra point to go up 7-0. Central Decatur responded quickly with Evahn Wallace returning the ensuing kickoff

just past midfield. The Cardinals started the drive at their opponents 48 yard line, going on a series of runs with a Devin Adams 1 yard carry then back-to-back Matthew Boothe carries for 12 and 4 yards. M. Boothe then threw an incomplete pass to Trey Hullinger before taking off on a 31 yard touchdown run. Kale Rockhold added the extra point tying the score at 7-7. Central Decatur didn't waste much time getting back on the board in the second quarter, holding the Tigerhawks to a three and out and punting the ball down to the Cardinal 24 yard line. The drive started with an incomplete pass followed by an 11 yard M. Boothe carry. M. Boothe then completed consecutive pass-

Greenhand Fireup By: Jenna Young and Cadence Clark On October 20th, 2021, 26 Greenhands, 1st-year members of the FFA, headed to Greenhand Fireup, which was held at the FFA Enrichment Center on the DMACC Campus! The members that attended included: Cadi Smith, Anden Hall, Cameron Lavrenz, Kaleb Jensen, Wyatt Hamaker, Gavin Smith, Larenzo Austin, Judd Eastin, Nolan Pierson, Jeffery Richards, Cord Hamilton, Lane Leeper, Austin Jensen, Wade Hill, Madisyn Palmer, Brenden Covington, Livi Saylor, Carson Scrivner, Quinn Kernen, Makenna Perkins, Abby Leahy, Chloe Clarke, Addy Stone, Bailey Dittmer, and Katelena Mothershed. They attended Greenhand Fireup along with 250 other agriculture students and FFA members from across the South Central District. They were able to participate in leadership workshops presented by Iowa FFA Officers and District Officers from multiple districts, including our very own South Central District Officers Grant Boyd and Chloe Hamaker. Following the conferences, they indicated the things that impacted them the most were learning about the variety of SAE Projects, learning about different forms of communication, communication starters, and how to talk to people you have never met. They also learned that you need to set goals, prioritize those goals, and always be true to yourself. Members were definitely fired up after this conference and plan to use the skills they learned to help the chapter grow. es to Tyke and Trey Hullinger for 6 yards and 33 yards, respectively. Adams then carried for 1 and 6 yards followed by a 10 yard M. Boothe carry. Adams then ran for 3 yards and finished the drive by powering into the endzone on a 2 yard run. Rockhold missed the extra point making the score 13-7. The Cardinals got back on the board immediately in the third quarter after Wallace returned the opening kickoff near midfield. Following a miscue that backed the Cardinals up 2 yards, Tyke Hullinger carried the ball on a jet sweep for 11 yards. M. Boothe then carried for no gain followed by a 2 yard run to pick up the first

down on a fourth and short. Tyke Hullinger ran again for 8 yards followed by a 24 yard M. Boothe to Rockhold pass. An unsportsmanlike conduct on the defense moved the ball up to the Tigerhawk 4 yard line where M. Boothe then powered in for a 4 yard touchdown. Rockhold added the extra point to make the score 20-7. Later in the quarter, a turnover on downs set the Central Decatur offense up at their own 42 yard line. Adams began the drive with a trio of carries yielding 4, 3, and 9 yards. M. Boothe then ran for 4 yards before back-to-back Wallace carries resulted in an 8 yard gain and a 30 yard touchdown. Rockholds' extra point made the score 27-7. As the game progressed late in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter, ColfaxMingo started to pull their way back into the game cutting the score to 27-21. Following a Tigerhawk touchdown, Wallace returned the kickoff for a touchdown but a block in the back penalty brought it off the board and set the Cardinal offense up at their own 10 yard line. Central Decatur powered their way down the field grinding time off the clock with Adams running for 4 yards on the opening play. M. Boothe followed it with a 13 yard

gain, then Wallace ran for 5 yards. M. Boothe then ran for 1 and 7 yards before a false start backed the offense up 5 yards. M. Boothe followed the penalty by completing a pass to Tyke Hullinger for 9 yards. Wallace then carried for 4 yards and Tyke Hullinger for 10, but a holding call brought the ball back to the Cardinal 35 and making it third and 15. M. Boothe dropped back and launched a pass downfield connecting with Trey Hullinger for a 36 yard pickup. A false start again backed the Cardinals up 5 yards. On first down, Adams picked up 4 yards followed by a 3 yard Wallace run and a penalty on the defense moving the ball up to the Tigerhawk 14 yard line and giv-

ing the offense a first down. Wallace was then dropped for a 2 yard loss, then a 5 yard penalty on the offense brought back a 16 yard touchdown pass to Trey Hullinger. A 6 yard loss on a completion to Sam Boothe was then brought off the board by a 15 yard defensive penalty making it third and 10 from the Tigerhawks 14 yard line. Adams was dropped for a 1 yard loss on third down but Rockhold then put a 32 yard field goal through the uprights making the score 30-21 and sealing the victory for the Cardinals. Offensively, the Cardinals put up 137 yards through the air and 275 yards on the (continued on page 14)

Gov. Reynolds Announces Significant Investments to Combat Workforce Shortages, Refocus Unemployment System (continued from page 1) Act (ARPA), to assist small and mediumsized manufacturing businesses to improve workforce innovation through retention, recruitment of new employees, and leveraging technology solutions to address vacancies and increase workforce capacity. Advanced manufacturing is Iowa's largest industry, accounting for nearly 18% of the state's Gross Domestic Product. "Like most other states, Iowa's ongoing workforce shortage is a critical situation that needs addressed today," said Gov. Reynolds. "With our current economic vitality, we are ideally situated to push our economy to new heights. We are committed to providing the necessary support to our advanced manufacturing industry, and other impacted industries, to overcome this primary obstacle and turn this short-term trajectory into long-term, broadbased prosperity." The first grant opportunity will supplement the existing Manufacturing 4.0 program for small manufacturers, employing up to 75 employees, with $5 million. The second grant opportunity will invest $25 million to

make similar grant opportunities available to mid-size firms employing 76 – 250 employees. Applications and further information on the grant opportunities can be found here. S e p a r a t e l y, Iowa Workforce Development will soon be launching a new Reemployment Case Management system to make sure Iowans can get back to work as quickly as possible. Currently, unemployment recipients do not have to engage with IWD's re-employment process until week five. Now, IWD will provide one-onone career coaching at week one and will audit the recipient's worksearch requirements on a weekly basis for those receiving unemployment benefits. With some narrow exceptions, weekly worksearch requirements will also double from two to four and the number of activities that qualify as a work search will be reduced from 27 to 12. "With a significant workforce shortage, I want to be sure that no Iowan who is receiving unemployment benefits unnecessarily remains on the sidelines. This new program and other changes will further that goal," Gov. Reynolds said.
