EDWARD ROE POUSH Edward Roe Poush, age 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 30th, 2021. A lifelong non-smoker, he waged a rapid battle with lung cancer before he passed on peacefully in his home in Grinnell, surrounded by family. Ed was born on July 8th, 1948 to Charles Roe and Charity Genevieve (Lillie) Poush in Leon, Iowa. He attended a rural one-room schoolhouse for many years, and helped out his family by cooking for the farmhands. He graduated from Leon High School in 1966. Later on he earned an AA at Centerville Junior College in Iowa, a BA in Psychology at Grace College in Indiana, and a specialist certificate in Long-Term Care Administration from DMACC in Des Moines. Ed lived in Muscatine, Iowa from 1971 until 1988. He worked at the General Hospital there as the Personnel Director, and had a side business selling his indisputably delicious dinner and cinnamon rolls. He worked as the Administrator at Mayflower Community in Grinnell for 30 years, retiring in 2018. Ed was united in marriage to Sharon Ruth Skellenger in Dover, NJ on July 8th, 1978. Their union was blessed by four children, all of whom have been honored to produce grandchildren for Ed to adore. Ed had a passion for enjoying the beauty of creation. From his love of gardening (a variety of plants) to enjoying the majesty of a scenic view in any area

to which he traveled. This passion extended to human contributions of creation in the form of books (Ed was a voracious reader of mysteries, history, biographies, and many more), music (besides greatly enjoying classical music, Ed himself was a talented piano player and singer), and cooking (Ed loved trying new foods of every kind, and excelled in particular at baking treats that delight the tongue). Together with Sharon, Ed fostered over 70 children during his life, and adopted two. He made it readily apparent that his home was always open, sometimes last minute, to the good-natured dismay of Sharon! It could be trusted that Ed would always connect with a person in the room, whether someone who had known him for years and already knew of his excellent character, or someone who was now a new friend. In the same vein, Ed loved to be involved with Grinnell College International Students. Those who speak about Ed invariably use the words “generous” and “kind.” All of these elements build around the central pillar of Ed’s life: faith in Jesus Christ. He devoted a great deal of time and resources to the local and worldwide church, and was a member of Grinnell Christian Church where he served as Elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. Ed earnestly worked towards having his life and character reflect that which Jesus wants out of a disciple. Enjoying the world that God has built, tending to the people that God loves, daily Bible study, and humbling himself to the service of others: Ed’s life is an example that all of us who knew and loved him will strive to emulate. He is preceded in death by his parents, and waits for the rest of us at the gates of Heaven. Those of us wishing farewell to him include his younger siblings and their families: Rob and Joy, Kathy and Dave, and Shelly. Ed’s children and their families are: Matt and Wendy (Sonnenberg), with children Zelda and Linus; Mike and Misty (Harmon), with children Ash, Wolf, Merry, and Margie; Jenny, with children Katie and Ben; and Seth and Jess (Routier), with children Owen and a baby girl due in February 2022. If you would like to send a card to the family, please send them via Grinnell Christian Church at 1331 Hobart Street, Grinnell, IA 50112. You may also share condolences online at http://www.everloved.com/life - of/edward-poush. This site also has information regarding live streaming the service.

Commercial Roof Coatings, LLC Supports SCIT Theatre Recently, an exciting upgrade was made to the Leon SCIT Theatre. Ivan and Darla Stoltzfus, owners of Commercial Roof Coatings, LLC, donated materials and labor to install a white cool roof onto the theatre. This installation will help extend the life of the building, and hopefully decrease the cost of utilities in the future. SCIT Theatre is a non-profit organiza-

tion, run completely by volunteers. Ivan and Darla realize the importance of keeping the theatre maintained so that it can remain open for the community. Specifically, the theatre hosts many community activities for Central Decatur School, area churches, and special events. MELINDA MACKEY The sign is up in town and it looks really nice! You can see pictures of it on the Grand River Facebook page for those of you not able to visit. A few last touches are on the way including some stonework and lights. Thank you to the city council for making this happen! A new sign was long overdue and this one is perfect. It is located across the street from the Silver Spur to the west and just south of the City Maintenance Shed. We may be having some mild weather right now, but that winter weather will be here soon. If you have not signed up for the weather alerts, you can do that by going online: https://entry. inspironlogistics.com/ decatur_ia/wens.cfm and signing up to receive weather alerts texted to your phone. You can choose to have the alerts sent via text, email or both. Choose schools, communities and which alerts you would like to receive. From the Leon Journal in October of 1913: A New Store in Westerville: J. D. Foster has opened up a new store at Westerville, and will carry a complete line of general merchandise, which will be a great accommodation to the people of the northwest part of the county. Mr. Foster is a pleasant gentleman and will no doubt do a good business, as he has a splendid territory from which to draw trade. Have a great week!

MARGARET GIBSON Well, did you remember to set your clock back an hour Saturday night? Did you enjoy an extra hour of sleep Sunday morning? Did you get a whole lot of extra stuff done with that extra hour? Busy week for Donna Ogier. She spent some time sorting more stuff to donate

to GoodWill, she spent some time getting her pet houses ready for colder weather (Donna takes such good care of her animals), and she visited her sister Jan Fisher on Saturday. Philinda Snethen enjoyed supper Monday night with Don and Pat Boswell. Roger Boswell prepared the meal and they had a wonderful time talking about old memories together. Dylan, Holly, and Benson Parkhurst had some family pictures taken Sunday evening then went to El Nopal for supper with Grandma Nicky and Cousin Daxon. Ivan Lane had a quiet week. Kim and Maurice Erwin also had a quiet week around their farm. Philinda Snethen and Kay Herring went to Corydon to visit their sister Fay Andrew. They had a nice visit and reached out to their sisters Talitha and Mary Ellen via cellphone so Fay could hear their voices, too. Julie Snethen and Manny Reyes and Stuart Silver visited with Philinda Snethen and ate supper with her on Saturday. Liz Carpenter helped out the Lamoni High School Drama Club on Friday night by loaning them a twin size bed for their upcoming play this weekend. She delivered the bed to the Coliseum on Friday evening. Watch for information on showtime Friday and Saturday nights. Sunday Kay Herring, Philinda Snethen, and Stuart, Debbie, and Melissa Silver enjoyed lunch together and had a great visit to boot. Cotton and Coy Osborn stayed the night with Grandma Sandy and Grandpa Gary Osborn Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday Chad and Cole Osborn and Gary’s mother Ruby Osborn joined Gary, Sandy, Cotton, and Coy for lunch. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and thanks to nice weather the last few days, the farmers are getting their harvesting completed. What would we do without the farmers and the truckers to haul the harvest?! Thank you farmers and truckers. (P.S. The Kansas City Chiefs managed to hang on and win against Green Bay Sunday. Go Chiefs!)

Emergency Authorization of Pfizer for ages 5-11

Davis City

LINDA BOOTHE We had to turn our clocks back this weekend so we supposedly gained an hour of sleep. I tried to turn my clocks back to 1985 but it was too much technology for me. I’m just thankful I can still remember back that far. Tuesday was Election Day and, also, our first frost. Just a little preparation for cooler or colder days ahead. I made a phone call on Thursday to Florida to order some of my medications. A young lady whose name is Tara answered and processed my order. When I gave her my address, she said, “Davis City, Iowa?!! I didn’t think I would ever hear from anyone living in Davis City!” She shared with me, that as a child, her Great-Uncle Rip France lived in the big house across the street east of the old DC school house. She had memories of playing in the yard and on the big porch of the house. She and her siblings also played at the school house playgrounds. What a small world! She has lived in Florida her entire life but we were both amazed that we knew some of the same people. As a retiree from Central Decatur staff, I’ve been thinking about having a get-together with those of us who have also retired. Message me, call me or just a shout out from those of you that would be interested in attending such an event. This guy has passed away and is entering heaven. God says to him, “Sorry! Your user name and password don’t match.” Oops! If you need to rent the DC Community Center, just give me a call at 442-3595. Later….Linda

Well, I rolled into Leon about 3:00 a.m. Monday morning after a whirlwind trip to southern Texas where I did a little Wild Pig hunting. As you can imagine I'm dragging and still in a tired fog. Thanks to Tonya and Mom for keeping the home fire burning here at the office. I was fully expecting to walk in the doors and have a decent amount of work to do to finish the paper. But, I didn't. Tonya basically had the entire paper finished with the exception of a couple of pages. I breathed a sure sigh of relief and my stress level dimensioned. I will tell you more about the hunt later... when I catch up on my sleep. oOo The time is at hand for winter sports' practices to begin. The girls began basketball Monday with the boys and wrestling squads starting next week. The junior high teams also began practice Monday, as well. Good luck to all the teams. The junior high practices include Macson. Even after spending the long weekend running around Grimes and Des Moines with Mary and Alex, Mac was right out of bed ready for the 6:15 a.m. practice and even out of the house by 5:45. He was very excited to begin this new adventure. Until the next time... Central Trail FFA Members Attend National Convention

CD Central-Trail FFA members who attended the 2021 National FFA Convention were back l-r: Jaxson Cornett, Skyler Yoder, Jenna Young, Lexi Jensen and Grant Boyd. Front: Ari Nopoulos, Chloe Hamaker, Addie Graham, Bly Hunt and Elly Sheetz. By Jenna Young and Cadence Clark For the Future for All was the theme for the 94th annual National FFA Convention, which was held from October 26th to the 30th in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year 58,542 FFA members, advisors, parents, and educators from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands traveled to Indiana for the convention. These members strived to show their belief in the National FFA Organization throughout the week. Ten members from the Central Trail FFA Chapter attended the National FFA Convention. This group was made up of Addie Graham, Elly Sheetz, Ari Nopoulos, Bly Hunt, Grant Boyd, Skyler Yoder, Jenna Young, Chloe Hamaker, Jaxson Cornett, and Lexi Jensen. Starting Tuesday morning October 26th the ten FFA members and their advisor Ms. Sondag boarded the charter bus with five other schools at Central Decatur. From there we traveled to West Terre Haute, Illinois to tour Coal Creek Land & Cattle. During this tour, FFA members learned about what this business does, which is offering custom embryo transfer services. We learned

that Coal Creek Land & Cattle has about 150 head of cattle. At Coal Creek Land & Cattle you can rent cattle to put embryos in, then when you get the calf, someone else can rent the cow for the next cycle. Overall, this tour was a great experience for the FFA members and helped us explore a career in the agriculture field. The next morning, FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We went on a tour bus that took us around the track. On the bus, we learned that the speedway used to be an old farm; when they first built it in 1909, they made the whole track out of bricks. Now, the surface is made out of asphalt, with the exception of the finish line, but most of the original bricks lay beneath it. The track is 2.5 miles long with a 9% bank in the corners. We learned that the safety barrier and safety features were developed at UNL-NE. When drivers win a race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, they kiss the bricks at the finish line to pay homage. The track can hold 350,000 people between the seating and viewing mounds inside the field. Another thing we learned was that the

fastest lap was recorded in 1997 at 237 mph. It was very interesting to learn about the history of this track. After the exciting tours, the kids headed to the 94th National FFA Convention. Here we got to hear the keynote speaker, Courtenay Dehoff, at the opening session. Some things that she said which stuck out to the FFA members included: “Don’t confuse your intermission for your finale” and “Make your mess your message and never settle.” Her speech was very inspirational as she was very outgoing. She showed FFA members that sticking to your roots and being your true self is the best thing for you, even if it may not seem like it at the time. She also explained that you are the only person that needs to believe in yourself. After the first session, we went to Rascal’s where we were able to have fun with go-carts, mini bowling, and many other games. The next day FFA members got to experience the career show and expo. Here we learned about many colleges and businesses throughout the agriculture field. This gave us an insight as to what we might want to do in the future. We also went to workshops to help

us explore more about agriculture and leadership. After a full day at the career show and FFA shopping mall, we headed to another session that night. On Friday, we woke up bright and early to head to the first session that day. We were able to get good seats right by the floor. After the session was finished, we headed back to the career show and attended another workshop. Last but not least, the FFA members headed to the American Degree Ceremony on Saturday, October 30th. At the ceremony, we were able to watch a member of the Lamoni FFA chapter receive his American Degree. After he was recognized, we headed for home where we arrived at about 7 p.m. Overall, this was an educational trip that changed the lives of ten FFA members in the Central Trail FFA Chapter. The FFA members plan to bring back what we learned to the rest of the chapter, in hopes of growing the chapter even more. This was an outstanding experience and was made possible by the tremendous support of our community, faculty and staff at the school, and our administration.

National Radiologic Technology Week

Providing patients with safe medical imaging examinations and radiation therapy treatments is the prime goal for the nation’s radiologic technologists (R.T.s). To recognize the vital work of its radiologic technicians, Decatur County Hospital is celebrating National Radiologic Technology Week® (NRTW), November 7-13, 2021. NRTW was created by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists in 1979. The event is celebrated each year during the week of November 8, the day that German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered the x-ray in 1895. Medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals work with some of the most innovative equipment in the medical field to help identify pathologies, plan and administer treatment, and restore patient health. Our radiology

department provides ultrasounds (accredited by the American College of Radiology), PET scans, CT scans, MRIs, nuclear medicine, vascular venous ultrasounds, and general X-rays. These services are available by appointment MondaySaturday. DCH ultrasound services have been awarded a three-year term of accreditation as the result of an extensive review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards, following a peer-review evaluation by boardcertified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently

provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement. The hospital is proud to uphold the rigorous standards required to maintain this accreditation. When asked about the radiology services, the ACR isn’t the only organization to recognize the hospital's hard work. Patients also recognize the great service provided by the radiology technicians. Laurie Shea said: “I had a CT scan done by Mike, and Mike was awesome. He knows how to treat and takes good care of his patients. He’s one of kind. Thank you for the great care I received. Everyone out there did fantastic job of taking good care of me.” To learn more about the radiology services and how to schedule an appointment, please visit https://www.decaturcountyhospital.org/services/radiology/, or call 641-446-4871.
