Davis City

LINDA BOOTHE I had a ‘Wednesday Surprise’ and I was so touched. Melissa Witt Cory of Altoona stopped by when I was outside planting and I was sweat and dirt head to toe. She was driving around DC reminiscing about all the childhood memories she has of the town. Melissa’s mother, Valerie and I were friends back in the day and I also babysat with Melissa. She loved Chris and Curtis and holds our time together as a special memory. Stop by on your next trip down this way when we both have more time to visit, Melissa! Ramona Clark and Julie Boswell had lunch together on Wednesday in Osceola at a local restaurant. Friends and lunch….what a combination! Lots of Senior Receptions were going on this weekend. Matthew Boothe’s reception was on Saturday at the home of his parents, Curtis and Missy Boothe. There was a large crowd, lots of fellowship and many, many congrats. My only family from Ames/ DSM were Tracey Boothe, Mack Boothe and great granddaughter, Wren. Curtis and his brother Chris look so much alike that little Wren was confused about Curtis…she asked if he was Papa, which is what she calls her grandpa Chris. She tagged him around like a little puppy cause Papa is her ‘favorite person’. Curtis loved it too but it was so sweet of our little darling to see the resemblance and be confused. Sunday was HS Graduation at Central Decatur at 3:00 pm. It always draws a crowd and it was unbelievable all the awards, grants and scholarships this group of 56 received. Congratulations to each and every one of the graduating seniors…Best wishes to ALL! I’ve so enjoyed watching you all grow up and become such nice young adults. When you come back to Leon, please stop and let me know how you have continued your ‘learning experi-

ence of life’. I’d love to hear your stories. On April 30th, DC had their cleanup day. We had several volunteers that helped make the day a total success. It was a rainy and miserable day. They climbed through the mud, got the trailers stuck in the mud and were totally soaked and exhausted. So I thought that I’d give a shout out to Josh Alley, Wyman Reed, Dave and Carol Proctor, June Kuster, Annette Boswell, Dell Lee, Paula Howell and Allen Sego. Because of them, there was 10,120 pounds of junk hauled out of town that day. I was over due for an oil change in my car and had an appointment to get it changed but I headed to DSM last week anyway. During the trip, my “change oil’ light started blinking….and then the air bag light came on. Geez! Both those lights blinked all the way home from Des Moines. So, Tuesday I got the oil changed and the air bag situation taken care of. Now, my dilemma is that I have nothing to read while driving. Any new book suggestions out there? Got news? Just give me a call at 4423595….Later, Linda

MELINDA MACKEY City Wide Cleanup was held last Thursday through Saturday. Kudos to everyone that utilized the favor the city offered to the community. It is also a much appreciated service generously offered to our community. However, I couldn't help but notice; even after City Wide Cleanup closed, lots of things were still showing up in the bin and actually on Broadway Street. And that's not ok. We have to do better, and I'm not sure of the solution. The minutes from the City Council meeting are posted in the paper each month and on the Grand River Facebook page. Craig and Cheryl do a wonderful job getting me the announcements for this article. Coffee at the Community Center has now been going on for a full year! Come have coffee through the week, each morning at the Community Center. A little bit of history(1881-1981) Francis (sic) Metts, the only child of Richard and Margaret (Smith)

Metts, was born in Decatur County, Iowa, Nov. 24, 1859. His father was killed in the Civil War at the Battle of Vicksburg, MS, when Frank was two years old. He and his mother, Margaret, made their home with his uncle Jim Smith until he grew to manhood. On Sept. 14, 1879, Frank married Eliza Jane (Jennie) Baker, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Binning) Baker. Jennie was born Sept. 3, 1961 (1861?), in Dubuque County, Iowa. At age seven she with her family came to Decatur County in a covered wagon pulled by oxen. The father had come to Decatur County one year before purchasing the land on which they settled. Frank and Jennie had eleven children, Della married Jasper Briner, Ethel married Paul Jones, Joe never married, Rachel married Boyce McConnell, Vera married Vern Glazebrook, Sylvia married Harley Reeves, Lola married Paul Swaim. Anna, Willy, Toddy, and Freedy died in infancy. After the death of their daughter, Della Briner, they helped care for her children. Frank's mother, Margaret Ann, also made her home with them until her death at the age of 100 years. Frank and Jennie lived their entire married life in the Grand River area. Frank died June 24, 1937. Jennie lived in their home in Westerville as long as her health permitted. She then moved to the home of her daughter, Rachel McConnell, who had a nursing home in Murray. Jennie died Nov. 21, 1949. Both, Jennie and Frank, are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery southeast of Grand River. Their children living in 1980 were Vera Glazebrook of Grand River and Lola Swaim of Martinsburg, Missouri. Have a great week!

She has found 8 kitties so far with another litter still on the way! Matt and Carin Dixon stopped by Liz Carpenter’s for a short visit Saturday afternoon. Ivan Lane had a quiet week around his place. He did get out to check the cows. Isadora Cote, daughter of Alma and Ronnie Mickelson, came home from Texas and the family celebrated Emaleigh Pierschbacher’s sweet 16 birthday! Philinda Snethen and Kay Herring had a garage sale Saturday. Liz Carpenter and Linda Perkins helped Nathan Silver and Ryan Martin chaperone the middle school fun night activities on Saturday evening. Saturday night Kyle Booth, Kay Herring, and Philinda Snethen met up with Melissa, Abby, and Deb and Stuart Silver at Pizza Shack and enjoyed a meal and visiting. Sunday Kay Herring and Philinda Snethen went to their nephew, Logan Coon’s graduation in Leon, Iowa, and the reception in Lineville. Liz Carpenter and Linda Perkins went to Des Moines Sunday to do a little shopping. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and just a reminder that Memorial Day is fast approaching on Monday, May 31. Please take a few minutes to remember and honor those in the United States military that gave all in service to our country.

Fulkerson for Board of Supervisor My name is Steve Fulkerson. I am running for Decatur County Board of Supervisors. My main objective as a supervisor is to bring in manufacturing companies and jobs to Decatur County. If we can bring jobs, we can support new housing projects and build the tax base instead of raising taxes. We have 4 exits off a major interstate highway that we need to take advantage of for easy access to our local businesses. As for me personally, I was raised on a farm in the Woodland area of Decatur County. I graduated from Mormon Trail Community School. I worked locally for a few years until deciding to start a business and head out on the road taking out abandoned railroads. I have owned 4 different businesses in Decatur County. I also worked for Decatur County Secondary Roads Department on the bridge crew, culvert crew Foreman and maintainer operator. I know the expenses involved in taking care of our roads and have been down every road in the county. If I have a complaint regarding the roads, I will know exactly where it is and what it is. As for bringing industry to the area, I have done it from New York to here, so I know how. On June 7th, I would appreciate your vote in the primaries. Let’s give the children of Decatur County great opportunities and a reason to stay. Paid for by Steve Fulkerson, 30086 State Hwy 2, Leon, Iowa 50144 ply like the look of this low maintenance plant. Purchase one and support the library. "The Iowa State Fair is looking for 10 individuals to honor during the first 10 days of the Iowa State Fair. Your help is needed to identify Iowans who have made a significant contribution to their communities, while exemplifying the qualities and characteristics associated with Iowa - integrity, dependability, sense of community and a strong work ethic. The Iowan of the Day winners must have shown their true Iowa spirit through continued volunteerism and community or statewide involvement. All nominees must currently reside in Iowa." Entry forms are available at www.BlueRibbon Foundation.org or at the library. Nomination forms must be postmarked no later than July 1st. The three Little Cards Preschooler classes made their final visit to the library for the school year on Thursday. With a graduation-themed story time, we read books about perseverance, elbow grease, and the power of adding 'yet' to the ends of our sentences. What a difference you can notice between "I can't ride a bike!" and "I can't ride a bike...YET!" I have really enjoyed reading, singing, laughing, dancing, and having fun with these young people. They are a bright and inquisitive bunch. Wishing them all the best as they head off to kindergarten. Please note: Little Tots Storytime continues on Thursday, 5/19, 5/26, and 6/2 at 11am. Summer programming begins on Friday, June 3rd, so Little Tots will be on break until the fall. We will have many, great programming opportunities throughout the summer, though. Check this article in the LJR and our Facebook

page for updates. Cribbage card parties are every Tuesday at 10:30. All experience levels (or none at all.) are welcome.

Weldon

KATHY MASON HISTORY OF WELDON My first recollection of Weldon was when we moved to Weldon from Illinois in the fall of 1895. I was past 6 years old. My father, M.V. Shutts, my mother, sister Eys, brother Hommer, and myself, made up our family and it seemed that Weldon had been our home base since that time. The first school I went to in Weldon was a two-room schoolhouse on the lot where Merlyn and Pauline Oiler used to live. Before long, a larger school house was built at the present location of Weldon school. The school house later burned in 1917. When the railroad came to Weldon in 1880, the merchants from Smyrna and Green Bay moved their businesses to Weldon as did many others. Some of the early merchants were the Ruffoorns, McCarney, F.M. Jamison, Ed Lockwood and Barnef Goff. John Barned moved his blacksmith shop to Weldon from Smyrna. Lou Farr had a cheese factory for several years. G.P. Jamison built a hospital and practiced medicine and surgery on the corner from the Christian Church. LOCAL The Weldon Country Club is open from 7:30 - 10:00 a.m. A couple serves each Saturday all different foods. Weldon Christian had 28 Easter morning service. The Mothers received tulips. Jim Lane was the minister. Brent and Kathy Mason took Nell Wright from Humeston to Bethany for dinner. Nell will be 95 in July. Nell Wright's mother Winfred was 98 when she died. Everyone is welcome to call Kathy at 641-4455213 or 641-414-2954 with any news or mail to 107 2nd Ave West, Weldon, Iowa, 50264.

Girls Track

By Coach Jacob Stamper The Central Decatur Cardinals made the long drive to Eddyville to compete in a Class 2A District track meet on Thursday, May 12th. In a very tough district that saw Mid-Prairie take 1st with 183 points, Davis County 2nd with 112, Eddyville-Blakesburg 3rd with 86, the CD girls took 4th with 66 points and recorded the highest finish at a 2A district meet in school history. The remainder of the team standings were as follows. Albia 5th (61), Cardinal 6th (54), Mediapolis 7th (46), Louisa-Muscatine 8th (44), Centerville 9th (33), Chariton 10th (21), Van Buren 11th (20) and Central Lee 12th (15). Mara Dykes lead with a toss of 28-00 and Emma Richards a 1904.50 in the shot put. In the high jump, Makenna Perkins

placed 8th with a jump of 4-04. River Hamaker came in to the high jump with high expectations and a repeat trip to state in mind. She finished 3rd with a jump of 4-10 and the statewide tiebreaker rules meant that state was sadly not going to happen this year for her. Lexi Jensen threw 97-07, which was a season PR in the discus, finishing in 5th place. Preslee Jones threw 53-06. Chloe Hamaker jumped a 15-00.50 finishing 6th and Hallee Hamilton 7th on the night tying her season best with a 14-05. Mya Applegate, Hallee, Lauren Martin, and Chloe took 5th in the sprint medley with a best time for this group of 2:02.36. Hadley Bell, Harrisen Bevan, Abigail Leahy, and Aniston Jones ran a season PR of 10:59.11 in the 4x800 taking 5th place. In the shuttle hur-

Vincent Carcamo in the 800m run, also competed in the 4x800.

dle, Makenna, Hadley, Addy Schreck, and River took 2nd place in 1:12.81, earning an automatice qualifying trip to State track! Annika Evertsen ran the 100m dash in 15.07 and Gatlynn Miller with a 15.15. The distance medley team of Amy Potter, Nora Demassue, Logan Proctor, and Harrisen earned 8th place in a time of 5:04.33. In the 400m run, Jenna Young ran a 1:22.35 and Preslee a 1:31.54. The 4x200 saw Hallee, Lauren, Mya, and Chloe run a 1:53.63 which was a huge season PR and took 4th place, missing state by 1.83 seconds. Hamaker and Makenna ran in the 100 meter hurdles taking 3rd in 17.22, and 4th in 17.39, respectively which was her season PR. The Oesch girls ran in the 800m for the team with Jamie Oesch running a season best of 2:58.15 and Haley Oesch with her own season PR of 3:21.06. In the 200m dash, Nora ran her own PR of 31.56 and teammate Mikayla Morgan ran a PR in 32.53. In the 400 meter hurdles, Bell was 4th in 1:14.11 while teammate Makenna Perkins ran a time of 1:18.70 which was her PR for the season. The 1500m saw Bevan taking 5th place in 5:47.68 and Aniston running a PR of 5:56.21. The 4x100 relay saw Hallee, Lauren, Mya, and River running a PR of 52.87. This time was one of the fastest times ran in CD history in the 4x100 and was 1.03 seconds off of the school record set in 1981. This was good enough for 4th place on the night but sadly this group missed qualifying for state by .26 of a second. In the 4x400 Abigail Leahy, Addy, Chloe, and Hadley finished 6th in a time of 4:36.04. CD Meet Where did the 90 degree weather come from!? In the space of 5 days the season went from feeling like winter conditions to 4th of July weather. This didn't stop the girls from running to a second place finish at the Central Decatur Coed Meet on Monday, May 9th. Sadly, the meet was cancelled in the midst of the 1500m, due to lightning, so the 4x100 and 4x400 relays did not get to run on the night. Final team standings were Wayne 1st (116 points), CD 2nd (77), Clarke 3rd (60), Mount

Ayr 4th (52), Lenox 5th (51), Creston 6th (39), Centerville 7th (30), SEW, Chariton, and East Union all tied for 8th (20). Hamaker took first with a jump of 5-03, Izzy Triggs 7th (4-06), and Makenna (4-04). Mara tossed the shot put, (26-07.50), Emma (21-01.50) and Preslee (20-07). The discus saw Lexi Jensen 3rd (97-05) and Preslee (47-01) and Emma (42-02). Chloe and Hallee both competed in the Long Jump taking 4th (14-01) and 7th (1308.25), respectively. The sprint medley got the team going with a strong 2nd place finish in 2:03.51 by Mya, Hallee, Lauren, and Chloe. The 4x800 saw Harrisen, Abigail, Jamie, and Aniston claim 1st place in 11:25.52. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Makenna, Hadley, Addy, and River ran a 6 second PR and took 2nd place in 1:11.81. An army of CD girls ran in the 100m dash on the night in a field of 53 runners. Lauren lead the way with a 13.89 (4th) and was followed by Mya 15.07, Amy 15.19, Nora 15.23, Gatlynn 15.29, Annika 15.33, Izzy 15.43, Jenna 15.58, Logan Proctor 15.70, Mikayla 16.12, Preslee 17.51, Mara 17.86, Haley 18.19, and Emma 18.29. The distance medley saw Amy, Nora, Logan, and Harrisen run 5:11.59 for 4th place. Jenna 1:22.38 and Haley 1:26.82, both ran in the 400m dash. The 4x200 team of Hallee, Lauren, Mya, and Chloe took 3rd in 1:54.70. The girls showed off their depth in the 100 meter hurdles placing 4 in the top 10 and 6 in the top 19 on the night. Makenna ran a 17.44 PR (4th), Hadley went 17.72 PR (6th), and River 18.01 (8th). Addy Schreck ran a 18.18 PR, Mikayla 19.90 PR and Amy a 21.20 PR. Rodger’s Recollections by Rodger Gatton There’s an old saying, “A fool and his money are soon parted”. I think there might have been a few times in my life when I was that fool. At any given moment, it seems that each of us is either a buyer or a seller. On any given day, we may play both roles, but some of us seem to amass larger fortunes than others. There’s also another saying dealing with money, “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer”. I believe I read about this little thought game somewhere, years ago, or else it came to me in a dream. Suppose we gathered together all the money in the world, then apportioned it equally to every adult on earth, so everyone was equal monetarily. How long do you suppose it would be, before the distribution of fortunes would be back to just about where it was before the equalization occurred? I don’t think it would be long; perhaps a few years, a decade at most. Some people seem to naturally have a way of getting money from others. Others seem to naturally be able to get rid of their money in a hurry. I’m not talking about thieves and robbers here, just honest dealings between sellers and buyers, where some goods or services are traded for currency. Are there any tricks that can cause a halfway intelligent person to give up a little bit more of his/her money?

Of course! Very likely always have been, ever since the first caveman traded his fur coat for a new club and some shiny rocks. One of the tricks is putting an item “On Sale”. Doesn’t it give you a good feeling to buy something that was recently selling for much more? No one likes paying MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) or the sticker price, if an item can be had for a discount. Whole stores are dedicated to selling so-called discounted merchandise. One such store where I occasionally shop, frequently sends me coupons good for up to 30% off. When I get there, I may find the pants I wanted are already discounted and, when I check out, if I’ve spent a certain amount, I might also get a coupon good for ten dollars off on a future purchase. Often there are things with such big discounts, it makes me think perhaps they were priced a little (or a lot) higher than they should have been. An example would be a pickup marked down by about $8000 at the end of the year. I have doubts the dealer is selling the truck at a loss even then, but how would you like being one who bought an identical truck earlier in the year, without the big discount? A very old tactic, which I’m surprised is still being used, is ending the price of an item with nines. Is there still anyone who thinks

an item advertised at $49.99 is a price in the 40s; who doesn’t recognize it’s really a cost of $50? Is there anyone who thinks a home priced at $249,900 isn’t awfully close to a quarter-million dollars? One custom that seems almost absurd in regard to gas prices these days, is continuing to end all the prices per gallon in 9/10 cent. I’m pretty sure there is a negligible difference between $3.899 and $3.90. Why not end this archaic practice now, and just use whole cents? Actually, did it make much more sense when gas was 30 cents per gallon, advertised as $0.299? It still was only a tenth of a cent less. Imagine chopping up a penny into ten parts, and one of those pieces is what you saved by buying the gas at $0.299 instead of $0.30. Here’s a commonly used tactic for drawing in potential customers: “Buy one, get one free”, sometimes abbreviated BOGO. Do you suppose that’s really true? I’m going to include another one here, too: “Free Shipping”. Whoever said, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch”, I’m sure meant it to cover other things beside lunches. How many, when you see these terms, think you are really getting something for free? Raise your hands. OK, put them down. I didn’t really think anyone would raise them. A man whose voice and face I am so tired of hearing and seeing, who gets the mute or a channel change whenever I’m close to the remote, started out selling pillows with the BOGO method. This was several years ago, and I was actually needing some pillows about that time. The price, if I remember correctly, was about $99 for one pillow. Of course, if you get one free, that’s like cutting the price in half. Still more than what I wanted to pay. I ended up getting two rather nice pillows at a Bed Bath & Beyond store, for about half the cost of the two-forone deal being offered. Even though I’ve tried to not listen, I believe I subconsciously absorbed that the pillow guy is now selling his pillows for about $30. Oh, I mean $29.99 each, closer to what they should have been in the first place. As for the free shipping offer, there’s no way I’m going to believe that one either. How difficult is it to simply raise the price of an item to cover whatever it costs to ship? If a merchant were being truthful, it would be said that shipping was included in their prices. Finally, here’s a tactic that’s being used these days to sell you more than you intended to buy. Companies are advertising an introductory price on everything from face creams to pain pills and health supplements. They offer an introductory deal for “preferred” customers. Know what that means? It means when you get the big deal, you are also signing up for future automatic shipments, billed to your credit card. Of course, you can cancel at any time, but they are counting on you forgetting to cancel, so they can send and bill for that second shipment, at regular price. I checked one web site carefully, before ordering some skin-care products, and thought I’d determined there was not an automatic shipment clause. Well,

there was, though it must have been in the fine print. I refused the package, asked my credit card company to remove the charge,

which they did. I wanted to order some advertised pain reliever, but it was the same kind of deal. No wonder they say 75% of those who

try it, go on to reorder. Half of those are likely the ones who forgot to cancel.

Stroke Awareness Month May is Stroke Awareness Month. During this time, we want to provide information to our community members to help you take preventative steps to avoid a stroke. Strokes don’t discriminate. They can happen to anyone, at any age— and about one in four people worldwide will have one in their lifetime. If a stroke occurs, we’re here to help. Recovering from a stroke involves monitoring for future symptoms, addressing risk factors, and physical and occupational therapy to relearn lost skills. If you have suffered a stroke and need help managing your new lifestyle, call the DCH Outpatient Clinic to see how our Neurologist, Dr. Maher Loutfi, and our rehabilitation team might be able to help: 641-4462285. The good news? Stroke is preventable, treatable and beatable. You have the power. The first step is asking your doctor about which risk factors you should address. High blood pressure is the #1 preventable risk factor for

stroke. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80. If you have high blood pressure, work with your physician to reduce it. Not only will this lower your risk of stroke, it will also help your brain to function better for longer. A diet high in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol can raise blood cholesterol levels. Diets high in sodium (salt) can increase blood pressure. Highcalorie diets can lead to obesity. Adding color by eating lots of fruits and vegetables has been shown to lower blood pressure over time, which can help reduce your stroke risk. Having diabetes more than doubles one’s risk of stroke. Every two minutes, an adult with diabetes in the U.S. is hospitalized for stroke. Work with your doctor to manage the condition to reduce your risk of stroke. High cholesterol increases the risk of blocked arteries. If an artery leading to the brain becomes blocked or throws a clot, a stroke can occur. It’s important to get high cholesterol under control.
