May is Mental Health Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Decatur County Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions program is spreading awareness of the challenges of receiving mental health access in rural areas. To bring awareness to mental illness in Decatur County, we’re partnering with other community agencies to host a Glow Walk on May 17th at 7:30 pm. We hope you’ll join us! The walk will start at the fairground entrance to the Little River Trail in Leon. While mental illnesses have a similar prevalence in both rural and urban environments, the circumstances and access to treatment look different. The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) tells us that rural residents face more obstacles in obtaining behavioral health services. As a result, distinct mental health differences are seen rurally compared to urban residents. Studies have also shown that the risk of suicide is higher in rural areas, making it that much more vital that individuals seek out and have access to help. The Rural Health Information Hub states, "The suicide rate is near twice as great in the most rural areas of the U.S. compared to the most urban areas." Figuring out a solution starts with identifying the problem. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) highlights the following barriers to receiving mental health care in rural areas: 1) Lack of Privacy. Individuals living in rural locations commonly identify a lack of privacy as a barrier to receiving treatment. 2) Lack of culturally appropriate treatment. Culturally appropriate treatment accommodates clients' beliefs and practices, preferred languages, individual and family histories, differences in symptoms, and pre-

ferred approaches to treatment. 3) Lack of Services. Even when individuals living in rural locations want treatment, they may have few services and providers in their areas, and they may have less access than urban residents to evidence-based practices (EBPs). 4) Lack of Practitioners. Rural areas have few behavioral health practitioners, particularly ones who are qualified to provide specialty treatment or EBPs. More than 75 percent of all U.S. counties are mental health shortage areas, and half of all U.S. counties have no mental health professionals at all. 5) Evidence-Based Practices. Some research shows that behavioral health facilities in rural areas are more likely than their urban counterparts to be independently operated and less likely to collaborate with a university to train providers on EBPs. At the same time, most studies that support EBPs are not conducted in rural areas or on rural populations. Recently, amazing solutions such as telehealth have helped increase access to mental health care for rural Americans, making treatment more obtainable. Along with these incredible technological advances, one thing we can all do to help improve access to mental health is simply talking about it. Talking about mental health can open up the door for people to feel more comfortable and less afraid to seek help. The American Psychiatric Association says, "Research shows that knowing or having contact with someone with mental illness is one of the best ways to reduce stigma. Individuals speaking out and sharing their stories can have a positive impact. When we know someone with mental illness, it becomes less scary and more real and relatable." To learn more about how you can become an advocate this Mental Health Awareness Month and join the National campaign," visit www.nami. org. Senior Life Solutions is Decatur County Hospital’s program, designed to meet the unique needs of individuals typically 65 and older experiencing depression and/or anxiety related to life changes that are often associated with aging. Last Friday, Mark Schilberg, (pictured left) president of the Schildberg Construction Company of Greenfield, presented Leon Fire Chief, Doug Moffett, (right) with a check for $7,000 to be used as needed by the Leon Volunteer Fire Department. The money presented was from the Schildberg Foundation.

The purpose of the foundation is to give financial assistance to non-profit charitable, educational or other causes that better the human condition and encourage community betterment. It was the hope of founders E.F. and Syliva Schildberg that in helping others, the ultimate reward would be for the same dedication to be passed

on to future generations. Chief Moffett indicated that the money would go towards the purchase of new helmets for the department. In addition, the Friends of the Little River Scenic Pathways was also a recipient of $5,000 from the Schildberg Foundation.

TWICE TOLD TALES 20 YEARS AGO (May 8, 2002) The United States Postal Service, in response to pipe bombs placed in roadside rural-type mailboxes in parts of Iowa, western Illinois, and Nebraska over the first weekend in May 2002, had safety guidelines that letter carriers were to follow. The rural box had to be open in order for the mail carrier to make their deliveries. Carriers then left the box open after delivering the mail as well. Mr. Holley, flying a Piper Cruiser, four-place airplane, accompanied by his wife, daughter and sister, had spent the day visiting relatives and friends in Kansas City. On returning to Boone, Mr. Holley stated that he had been flying into a strong head wind and had miscalculated how much gasoline it would take to reach his home port. County Extension Director Arvid Miller and Mrs. Miller were coming from the north past the airport and noticed the plane landing. It was almost dark

so Mr. Miller decided to investigate. The Millers brought the passengers in town to spend the night and Night Marshall Vanderpoole took Mr. Holley and passengers to the airport at four o'clock the next morning and they proceeded on to Boone. The plane had been filled with fuel the night before. LINDA BOOTHE Mother’s Day 2022 is in the books and, for me and all with growing families, it was the BEST! I made the trip to WDSM to the home of Mack and Katie Boothe, my grandson and wife’s home, for a wonderful day. Four generations of kids, grands and great grands. Grilling plus a banquet of food and desserts to our heart’s desire. Present were Chris and Tracey Boothe of Ames, Brian, Sydney and Wren Little of Johnston, Mack, Katie, Olivia and Kaden Boothe of WDSM, Joyce Binning of Van Wert, Wade and Diane Klingbeil and Tyler, Brooke and Nolan Klingbeil, all of DSM. So thankful for all these peeps in my life! My visitors this past week were a special surprise. Linda Burrell and John Thompson stopped by for a visit as they were touring Davis City in search of a future home for Linda. I’ve talked to Linda on the phone several times about possibilities of fixer uppers but she was checking it out for herself. A good report from John about his treatments that seem to be slowing down the dreaded cancer. He is feeling better, has a good appetite and has gained back a few pounds. That’s the BEST news! Prayer Warriors continue to keep John on your daily prayer list. Mary DeLong, Amy Kuster, Mike Webster, Donna Johnston and Jarin Hinds will be celebrating their birthdays this coming week. Give them a Shout Out! Happy Anniversary to Rex and Ashley Toney on the 11th and Jerry and Diane Hullinger on the 14th. Best wishes to both couples. When a kid says, “Daddy, I want Mommy”, that is the kid’s version of “I’d like to speak to your supervisor.” PLEASE call me to share your news at 641442-3595…Later, Linda

If you have news please call the JournalReporter at 446-4151

Wow! Ninety degree weather this week ought to help dry things out a bit after all the rain. Hope it stays dry through the weekend so we can all get some garden in and the farmers can get their crops planted. Clay Parkhurst and Breanna Main had an exciting and happy weekend with Breanna’s graduation from Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Sciences! Congratulations, Breanna! Clay and Breanna also went to Kansas City to help Clay’s cousin celebrate his birthday. Sounds like a fun weekend! Tuesday Philinda Snethen went to Corydon to visit her sister Fay Andrew and her friend Bob Mortimore. Drew and Keegan Parkhurst stopped by to visit Liz Carpenter late Friday afternoon.. Holly, Dylan, and Benson Parkhurst spent time visiting Holly’s grandma Sunday afternoon. Then they went to visit Grandma Traci, and then headed over to see Papa Larry. They had a great weekend visiting with family. Cassie Daleske found 1 morel mushroom this week. Looking on the bright side - 1 is better than none. Ronnie and Alma Mickelson had a fun road trip to Illinois to pick up their 2 new boer does. They welcomed Trinity and Love to their goat herd. Holly Parkhurst reports that their attempt to incubate some chicken eggs was unsuccessful, and they’ll have to try again sometime. Ivan Lane had a quiet week at home. Isadora Cote, daughter of Alma and Ronnie Mickelson, traveled to Crosby, Texas, to visit friends. Saturday Philinda Snethen had Don and Pat Boswell over for supper Liz Carpenter joined Philinda Snethen for Andover ZOOM church on Sunday. After church Liz, Philinda, and Philinda’s grandson Kyle Booth enjoyed a taco feast for a Mother’s Day lunch. Donna Ogier made a supply run to Bethany last week while her other half mowed the yard in between rains.

That’s quite a feat! Donna tried to pull some weeds, but she is afraid they are already getting ahead of her. With all this rain, it’s not surprising! With the hot weather coming this week, if they aren’t ahead of her, they will be for sure! Liz Carpenter managed to mow most of her yard in between rains. She only got stuck in the mud twice and had to use her tractor and chain to pull the mower out of the mud. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and remember the sunscreen when you are outside planting and doing yard work this week. Sunburns are no fun at all!!!

MRS. WOODARD was taken sick with convulsions, and MR. WOODARD says that after it passed off she expressed a wish to continue on to her mother's although he wanted her to stop on the way. They continued on their journey and MRS. WOODARD was very sick when she reached the house, and Dr. Robinson, of Grand River, was telephoned for soon after they arrived. The woman died just as Dr. Robinson reached the house some thirty or forty minutes after the WOODARDS arrived at the farm. Dr. Robinson stated immediately upon seeing the woman that she had died from strychnine poison. This report soon spread over the neighborhood and there was considerable talk about the case, which ended in sending word to Coroner Layton asking him to hold an inquest. Have a great week!

MELINDA MACKEY The Ladies Salad Supper went well. Attendance was down a bit, but everyone had a great time and the tables were decorated with centerpieces made by LeAnn Boles. The Ladies Salad Supper is held annually in the spring! Here's just a little bit from a case of the possible murder of a woman on her way to visit her parents in Grand River: Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, December 24, 1903 'Mrs. Charles Woodard's Sudden Death is Being Investigated -- Was She Poisoned?' The sudden death of MRS. CHARLES WOODARD on Tuesday of last week, a short mention of which was made in last week's paper, has caused a vast amount of talk, many wild rumors and an investigation by Coroner Layton, the result of which has not yet been made public. The Reporter does not desire to express an opinion in this case until the result of the coroner's investigation is made public, and we will simply give the facts in the case as we learn them. MRS. WOODARD was the wife of CHARLES WOODARD, a farmer living three miles northwest of Decatur, and on Tuesday of last week she expressed a desire to go and visit with her parents, MR. and MRS. WM. KIRKPATRICK, who live near Grand River. MR. WOODARD hitched up his team to the spring wagon and started with her for the KIRKPATRICK farm. Before reaching there,

In the Library Loop MARY STONER

Tomorrow night (Thursday) is our community meeting from 5-7PM at the Brick House. (Refreshments provided) We would like your input on how the library could better serve the community through the addition of specific services or resources. It is our hope that the book, '13 Ways to Kill Your Community,' (which will be a point of discussion at the meeting) as well as community input, will

generate helpful conversations about how the library can better serve Leon. Your input is valued, please plan to join us. You can contact John at 641446-6332 for more information about getting your own copy. You do not need to have read the book to participate in the meeting. We have received a large donation of DVDs. Many are action/historical fiction films. Those we could not use in our collection have been added to our library sale. They can be yours for $0.25 each. Stop in before they're gone! Join our Aloe Vera fundraiser! For a $5.00 suggested donation, you can take home an aloe vera plant in an adorable tin planter. This amazing plant is helpful in the home for use with burns, scrapes, sunburns, rashes and more. Perhaps you simply like the look of this low maintenance plant. Purchase one and support the library! Former AmeriCorps member, Katrina Henderson has published her own book, 'Housing of 300.' She will be hosting a book talk to discuss her writing and publishing process on Thursday, May 19th at 4PM at the library. Be sure to join us to learn more about her experience becoming an author and hear some excerpts from her book. Mark your calendars for our Summer Reading Program's kick-off night on Friday, June 3rd from 6-8PM in the library parking lot. Stop by to get your reading log and a calendar of the summer's program offerings. All ages can participate! Read great books, have lots of fun, and earn amazing prizes! Little Tots Story-

time is on Thursdays at 11AM. Join us with your babies and tots for songs, books, fingerplays, and fun! Cribbage card parties are every Tuesday at 10:30. All experience levels (or none at all!) are welcome.

I was glad to hear that the pool will be able to open this season. Following a special council meeting last week, it was approved to open the pool on June 11 for the season. Currently there is one manager and 10 guards secured for the facility. The guards will have to go through training and get their certification in life saving and first aide skills. oOo We went from wearing jackets and stocking hats last week to sweltering heat and humidity this week. Enjoy the weather roller coaster ride...it's Iowa. Ha! I feel for the young athletes that have to compete in this extreme change in temperatures. Their bodies aren't accustomed to the heat after battling chilly conditions for most of the season. Drink plenty of fluids. oOo Boy, the ole dandelions are sure making their presence known right now. I think I will look up some recipes and start getting even with those weeds. Although dandelion salad doesn't sound all that appealing to me. Ha! Until the next time... So Long!

Cardinals Pick up a Pair of 4th Place Finishes By Coach Jacob Stamper After a delay of a day due to the less than ideal weather, the CD girls finally got to run at the Pride of Iowa Conference Track meet on Tuesday, May 3rd in Lenox. The girls came in with high expectations and a 3rd place finish was a realistic dream if everything went well. The girls ran very well but the results fell some other teams' ways in certain events and the girls took 4th place for a second year in a row with 93.5 points. Wayne took 1st with 162.50 points, Nodaway Valley 2nd (145), Mount Ayr 3rd (112.50), CD 4th, Martensdale St-Mary's 5th (85), Lenox 6th (49), Southwest Valley 7th (28), Southeast Warren 8th (21), East Union 9th (19), and Bedford 10th (16.5). In the high jump,

River Hamaker walked away the Conference Champion with a lifetime best jump of 5-03, beating last year's Class 1A State Champion in the process. Makenna Perkins nabbed 8th place in the high jump. Mara Dykes and Lexi Jensen snagged 10th (27-08.50) and 11th (27-05.00) place finishes, respectively, in the shot put. They both then shifted to the discus event where Lexi threw 93-05.00 for 3rd place and Mara threw 58-01.00 for 14th place. In the long jump, Hallee Hamilton came into the meet as the 11th best jumper and ended up tied for 4th place with a leap of 136.25ft. Chloe Hamaker scratched a few jumps by fractions of an inch and took 10th with a jump of 12-08.50ft. The sprint medley team of Mya Applegate, Hallee, Lauren Martin,

and Chloe took 5th place in 2:02.58. Jamie Oesch ran the 3000m race taking 9th place with a PR of 15:05.60. The 4x800 team of Aniston Jones, Hadley Bell, Abigail Leahy, and Harrisen Bevan were the CD team's 2nd conference champion on the night as they blew the competition out with a season best 10:59.39, beating the 2nd place team by 16 seconds. The shuttle hurdle group of Annika Evertsen, Mikayla Morgan, Addy Schreck, and Makenna captured 3rd place in 1:19.15. In the 100m dash, Lauren took 5th place in 13.95 while teammate River ran 14.42 for 8th place. In the distance medley, Amy Potter, Nora Demassue, Logan Proctor, and Aniston ran to a 9th place finish

in 5:17.31. In the open 400m, Hadley earned 8th (1:09.78) and Abigail 9th (1:12.56). The 4x200 turned out to be a very exciting race that came down to the wire with Hallee, Lauren, Mya, and Chloe taking 2nd place in 1:54.66, just missing 1st place by .39 of a second and holding off 3rd place by .25 of a second. The 100m hurdles saw two Cardinals place back to back as River took 3rd (17.57) and Makenna was 4th (17.72). The 800m race was also an exciting one as Harrisen took 4th (2:40.92) PR, missing 3rd by .03 of a second, while Abigail took 8th (2:48.03) PR. The 200m was another fast race with Lauren running 28.23 PR for 7th place and River getting 9th in 28.68. Hadley took 4th in 1:13.30 in the 400m hurdles and Makenna was 8th in 1:22.32. Farewell Teachers and Staff

Sue Carroll

Subject: Director of Maintenance Years at CD: 18 Plans After Leaving CD: I'm retiring, and plan on enjoying time with my husband Turner, our kids and grandkids. We would like to do some traveling and see new things. I plan on helping my Mom out more and doing some volunteer work for my community. A message to the CD community: I've had a great 18 years with CD and I'm thankful they gave me the opportunity to work there and be able to meet so many wonderful staff and students. Go Cardinals!

Anne WinslowCook Subject: Elementary Art (K-6). Also taught TAG, was a Mentor teacher and the Drama director. Years at CD: 12 Plans After Leaving CD: Moving to Des Moines. Planning to explore my own art, maybe work with other artists promoting their art, maybe write a children's book, maybe continue teaching in some capacity, and definitely seeing where life takes me! A message to the CD community: I have truly enjoyed teaching at CD. I have watched students mature from as young as kindergarten to high school students and beyond, and am so proud of the young men and women they are growing into. My principal, Amy Whittington, and superintendent Chris Coffelt have both been very supportive of my efforts in developing and growing the elementary visual arts program at CD, and I am eternally grateful for their trust in me. I hope I have challenged students to think and to enjoy learning new things. Finally, my hope for the students that I have taught is not only that they developed their artistic skills (which they have exponentially!), but also that they have gained an appreciation of the art they will see in their lives, and a confidence to create it, enjoy it, critique it, challenge it, take awe in it, and maybe even own it!

Adios Amigos........ By Reece Hill Well I suppose it is about that time, isn’t it. These last two years, working as an editor on the Cardinal Crier, have been a real treat. I have been able to do and learn a number of things I never expected to because of my time with the Crier. Above all, everything I have done with the Crier, and The Leon Journal Reporter, have helped to give me a clear vision of what I want to do in the future. Even though the two-man operation we have had going has been tough to maintain at times, I have been extremely lucky to have had such a hardworking partner in Maddy Leahy. Maddy is the kind of person who does everything, despite this, though she always found time to do her work on the Crier, never leaving me hung out to dry on my own. With that said, I also owe just as much thanks to Corey and Tonya Lindsey. Before I entered high school I had little to no interaction in my life with either of them and didn’t really know where I wanted to go as far as a career. My freshman year I decided to job shadow Corey where I was able to learn a lot about what it takes to run a newspaper, my interest was piqued. A cou-

Final Time For Everything

By Maddy Leahy I guess there really is a final time for everything. To some people in the community, the class of 2022 might be just another graduating class. To some, it might be their first child’s graduation, while it might be some parent’s last. Some people might not even make it to any graduation parties, while others are scrambling to make them all. To myself and the rest of this class, it’s the end of an era but also the exciting beginning of a new one. Central Decatur will always be a home to me. I’ve had my best and my worst moments at this school and I have learned that’s what life is all about. Laughing with my friends in the parking lot, stressing over an upcoming test. Celebrating with our team after a win against the rival school or crying in the hallway with Maggie. Being a high school student has its ups and downs, but so does everything else in life. I know that when we walk out the doors for the final time, the graduating Class of 2022 is leaving a huge impact on CD. We can look back and be proud of our many accomplishments throughout sports and academics as a class. I did the math and across all of CD athletics, 26 athletes and managers are graduating this year. We’ve broken seven school records, had two state officers, one FFA district officer, and are easily one of the most involved and competitive classes to graduate. Our class entered the world the same year as the flu shot, Facebook, and the strongest hurricane in 40 years. We’ve lived Subject: 5th Grade Math and Social Studies, 6th Grade through a pandemic interrupting the middle of our high school career and months worth Social Studies of quarantine. I’m definitely not biased, but Years at CD: 9 I think it’s safe to say that we are probably Plans After Leaving CD: Work at Delta Metals. Continue all-around the best class. coaching Cross Country and Girls Track. Jokes aside, I’m going to miss this school. I’ll miss my daily talks with Rippey, Mrs. A’s famous coffee cake, asking Zach for more camera stuff, messing up the recipes in Mrs. Bell’s class, and bugging Mr. Ray every time I passed his room. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot I won’t miss about this school The Crier is looking for underclassmen

Any additional comments or suggestions:

ple years later they gave me the opportunity to write an article covering our most recent football game, which I accepted gladly. After the first article, I was asked if I would like to continue writing football, and thus my involvement with the newspaper really began. This eventually spread to me covering basketball, and even writing a few smaller articles about cross country, baseball, wrestling, and track. About a month after I started covering sports for the Journal Reporter, Maddy and I were given the opportunity to become co-editors for the Cardinal Crier. Though it hasn’t always been easy, I have really enjoyed my time working on the Crier. I enjoyed writing articles, getting to put the paper together ourselves, and getting to do something that I initially never would have gotten the opportunity to do if Corey and Tonya didn’t volunteer to be our advisors and if Maddy hadn’t chose to join me. Six years ago, I never would have believed that I would be going to college in pursuit of a Mass Media degree and that I would have gotten so much support from and owe so much to Corey, Tonya, and Maddy, but I am truly happy that things shook out this way and I will really miss the Crier.

- math tests, early morning meetings, and of course, doing homework at 3 am despite my sister trying to sleep (sorry Abby). I’ve been involved in everything that I could fit into my schedule, and while there were times I was triple booked, I am forever grateful for the opportunities that were provided to me, especially writing for the Crier. I honestly never saw myself enjoying writing, but I guess I’ve seen wierder things. Just being able to share my opinion on topics has helped me become more confident in not only my writing but also in who I am as a person. I’m not quite sure what the best words are, or even if I can fit everything I want to say into the word limit but I’ll try my best. Just like Mr. Howell, I love using quotes as much as I can, and I want to leave you all with this one. A quote from a 1993 movie, Tombstone. “Look at all the stars. You look up and you think, ‘God made all this, and he remembered to make a little speck like me.’ It’s kind of flattering, really.” Although you might not be religious, you can’t deny the importance this quote has. To me, the quote shows that you are one of an estimated 117 billion people to ever walk this earth, but you still have a huge role to play as your life unfolds. You are meant to be here. Not to bring y’all back to 2016, but #yolo. Do what you can to be the best you can. I challenge you all to try your hardest in everything you do and leave your mark on the school, the community, and the world. Be kind to everyone, and give 110% in all the things you take part in. Join the club you’ve always wanted to, and go out for that sport even if your best friend isn’t doing it. Do what makes YOU happy, not what makes society happy. If you made it this far, thank you. Truly from the bottom of my heart, I’m so glad I could leave an impact on the school, even if it was just a small one. No goodbye article, video, or picture can explain how grateful I am for these people in this school. But don’t worry, I’ll still be around for all your picture needs ;) For the final time, this is Maddy Leahy, co-editor, signing off.

Letter Carriers' Food Drive Saturday

Come bn wth us The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its annual national food drive on Saturday, May 14. NALC's food drive, which was first held in 1983, helps feed millions of Americans. The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the country's largest one-day food drive, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need. Customers simply leave their donation of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail on Saturday, May 14. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes, and distribute them to local food banks, pantries, shelters and churches. The Letter Carriers' food drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin

Islands and Guam. Hunger affects 1 in 8 Americans, including millions of children, senior citizens and veterans. In the 30 years since it began, the food drive has collected about 1.82 billion pounds of food for struggling residents. The need is as great as ever, given the pandemic-caused economic dislocations of the past two years. The traditional food drive is returning this year after a two-year hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020 and 2021, it was replaced by NALC's donor drive, in which those wishing to help made online donations to local food pantries. "Letter carriers are a part of every neighborhood in the nation," NALC President Fredric Rolando said, "and we see the growing need for food assistance in our communities. Hunger Food Drive. Together, we can help stamp out hunger in America." The timing is important, with food banks, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter holidays and with summer approaching, when most school meal programs are suspended. On May 14, as they deliver mail, the nation's 200,000 letter carriers will collect the donations that residents have left near their mailboxes. People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on Saturday. The food donations stay in each community, going to help local residents. People who have questions about the drive in their area should ask their letter carrier, contact their local post office, or go to https://www.nalc.org/ community- service/ food-drive, facebook. com/StampOutHunger or twitter.com/ StampOutHunger.
