A shed was damaged on the Dittmer and Onstat properties at the east end of Garden Grove. After several days of the Des Moines National Weather service predicting there might be a chance of severe weather with the possibility of tornados in the area over the weekend, Decatur County and surrounding counties were put under a watch Saturday afternoon. Around 4:30 p.m. the skies began to darken in the west and around 5:00 p.m. Leon was put under a severe thunderstorm warning that did not produce much weather of any kind. While the sun was coming back out over

Leon, just three miles to the east in Center Township, Sections 23, 24, 13 and 14, a tornado was wrecking havoc at the farms of Kendra Vaughn, Brian Stutzman, Mike Yutzy and Charles Linhart, before going cross county to Garden Grove. It was not known if it stayed on the ground until it hit the southeast corner of Garden Grove where it destroyed part of a shed and moved equipment at the Dustin and Ashley Dittmer/Craig and Brenda Onstat homes before it crossed the four corners and

Katrina Henderson, the daughter of John and Michelle Henderson, of rural Van Wert, has written a children's book and is now a published author, "Housing of 300," based on a true story. A little information about "Housing of 300," is that it is based on the true story of Missy, the stray dog, who would do anything to protect her pack. Missy believes that if they work together, they can accomplish almost anything. Things take a drastic change when a hurricane hits and Missy and her pack are rescued by a wonderful man. They soon discover that this caring man has also rescued over 300 other dogs and several cats. What will happen to the pack? Will they stay with the nice man when the hurricane is over, or will they be adopted and be separated? Read on to find out if Missy and the other strays are adopted into loving homes where people will care for them. If you'd like a copy you can purchase her book from Amazon or Pen It! Publications. If you are local, you can purchase a signed copy directly from Katrina. She currently does not have any copies on hand, but plans to purchase some soon. Like and follow her author page.

Rodger’s Recollections by Rodger Gatton I’m writing the first part of this story while everything is still fresh in my mind. It’s the Thursday night before Valentine’s Day. This afternoon and evening, I made my first visit to the newly opened Stag Inn, Bar & Grill, in Garden Grove, Iowa. I went prepared to be impressed, and I was not disappointed. The owners, Richard and Jennifer Vecchio, were kind enough to let me look around and ask questions. While Richard was quite busy in the kitchen most of the time, Jennifer was able, before their opening at 4 p m, to give me a tour of the guest rooms upstairs. I sipped a couple of

brews at the bar while I soaked up some of the atmosphere and recorded some of my observations; then Larry and Presley Wood, from Osceola, came down, and I joined them for dinner. In the early 1970s, I was on the town council in Garden Grove and we met in a room in the west half of the building, where now there are dining tables. At that time, the town library was in the east half of the downstairs, before they built a new one. During the time I was on the council, I guess I was just never curious enough to explore the rest of the building, so I was glad to finally have that op-

portunity. For many years the building sat, empty and forlorn, or at best underutilized. It started its life as the Lady Amber Inn, named after C. S. Stearns’ favorite race horse. Clary S. Stearns was a banker and lived in the Victorian house east of the school, commonly referred to by locals as “the mansion”. I’s been told that the perimeter of the school’s practice football field was once the practice track for Squire Stearns’ horses. The first thing that caught my eye, as I entered the bar through the east door of the building, was the ceiling. When I met there with the mayor and other council members, I don’t recall ever noticing the ceiling, perhaps because it was dark and dingy, likely with its old paint peeling. It is of sculptured metal, with edges that curve down the walls and encompass each room. The designs, especially the edgings, are so beautiful. Richard is the one who gets credit for the restoration of the ceilings. I can’t even imagine how many hours of preparation was involved, and then repainting it all. The color is a gold/ bronze and is so striking. I don’t think a better finish could have been selected. The ceiling lights, I’m sure, are not original, but they are a most excellent choice for blending in with that original ceiling, looking like they belong there. After marveling over the ceiling, one of the next things I noticed was the bar, and the reception desk in the inn. Both were constructed from pieces and parts of doors from old buildings, several with the hinge and latch hardware still attached. The top of the bar, I was told, was made from slabs of a local tree, highly smoothed and varnished, with the imperfections in the grain and original contours of the trunk intact. If you have been reading my columns over the years, you may recall I did a series on the history of the banker’s mansion, which I had once owned, and I described the Vecchio’s restoration of the home. Glancing into the kitchen of The Stag Inn, I spotted a soapstone laundry sink on the east wall. When I mentioned to Jennifer there used to be such a sink in the basement of their home, which I had used for developing film and prints in my photographic darkroom, she told me this was the same one, moved to the new kitchen. That doesn’t mean the kitchen is old-fashioned. I didn’t tour that part, as there was a lot going on back there, but it stretches across the entire back of the building and appears to be quite adequate in size, modern and professional. In the wall between the dining area and bar, and the kitchen, is a window such as you see in train depots, where hotel guests, or others as well I assume, could purchase tickets for the passenger trains, which ran through Garden Grove, about a block south of the hotel. Jennifer showed me a small folder, a directory from the Garden Grove of days past. In it were ads for several businesses, a church directory, and distances from Garden Grove to nearly 20 other towns. Two things in particular caught my eye; one an ad from Dr. L. R. Boyce, most certainly a relative of

mine, the other a railroad timetable, showing two northbound and two southbound passenger trains MonSat, and one of each on Sundays. Besides the bar and grill, the building is a fully-functional inn, with several queensized rooms, one smaller room, and a suite suitable for a family of five. Room rates seem very reasonable. Even though the bar and grill is open but 3 nights a week, with reservations, rooms can be rented for any night of the week, or the whole second floor with all the rooms can be rented together, for large family get-togethers. It appears the building has been outfitted with a new furnace and air conditioning system, and water heater. Other features, maybe more noticeable, are the rebuilt front porch (I’m hoping to see some rocking chairs there this summer), all the original floors refinished in both the downstairs and upstairs, and the two original front doors restored with small colored-glass panes surrounding the central clear glass. The east side of the downstairs retains the two original back-to-back fireplaces, which are quite similar to the ones in the Stearns’ house. Oh how I wish I could sit in front of one of them, as I did in the house many decades ago, on a winter evening, with a wood fire blazing! On this particular Thursday afternoon, I sat at the bar, collecting my thoughts, taking some notes, and soaking up the ambiance of the place. After driving by for so many years and thinking of it as just an old, cold, deteriorating building, probably destined to meet a big wrecking machine someday, it pleased my heart to see it so beautifully restored, as a new business coming to life, a warm spot on a February afternoon, with employees and customers moving

about within. Thinking of all I’ve seen today, I believe Squire Stearns would be proud that his hotel is once again a thriving business, reborn as The Stag Inn.

My heart goes out to the community of Winterset and other areas where several tornados that popped up Saturday afternoon and evening did major destruction and took the lives of several. Here in Decatur County, a tornado touched down in Center Township just before 5:00 p.m. and continued on a 19 mile path through Garden Grove. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported, only damages to outbuildings, roofs, and a few head of livestock were reported. Tonya and I were in Des Moines with Macson and Pace Chaillie when all this was going on. We avoided any major storms where we were at, but areas east of Des Moines took damage. I look at the out-

and the lads quickly ran to the Penniwell home and gave the alarm. The fire department was summoned and a few minutes had the blaze extinguished. The fire was supposed to have been started by a bunch of blazing soot that fell on the roof while the chimney was burning out. Found dead in bed – Andrew Lindsey, who had lived alone for some years in the old Q.M. Lindsey property, was found dead in bed by J.A. Caster and Sol Penniwell. He had been in very feeble health for some time but had been going uptown and usually called at the Caster grocery. LIZ CARPENTER Well, well, well, seventy degrees and sunshine for a few days then severe thunderstorms and tornadoes and then a snowstorm. Living in southern Iowa and northern Missouri is quite an adventure and you don’t even have to leave your house to experience it. Just watch the weather out the window. The tornadoes during last Saturday’s severe thunderstorms took the lives of seven people including two young children and their father. Please keep all of those affected by the storms in your thoughts and prayers. Drew Parkhurst and his family attended the Deer Classic in Des Moines, Iowa. That is a fun family activity! Breanna Main went shopping with her friends over the weekend. She and Clay Parkhurst went out for supper with friends as well. Clay worked through the week as usual. Things are getting more exciting for them as Bre is getting closer to graduating! Axel Lane was excited to show off triplets that one of Chrissy Wiig’s goats birthed over the weekend! He was pretty proud! Axel is living the life and learning to be a farm boy! Lane Ury visited Ivan Lane one day last week. Coy and Cole Osborn stayed with Grandpa Gary and Grandma Sandy Osborn Sunday morning. They enjoyed a tea party in the morning then they ate lunch with Gary and Sandy before they went home

for the rest of the day. Seems like Donna Ogier always has something to fix! This time the washer needed a repairman for an easy fix. Donna reports all is good now and back in shape and she will be canning a few pints of chicken and soup beans this week. Ron and Carol Shields visited Liz Carpenter Thursday evening. Sandy Osborn visited Liz Carpenter on Friday evening. Liz Carpenter traveled to Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, Saturday for an all-day EMT presentation. It was kind of scary sitting in the presentation with phones going off about tornado warnings. Driving home was also a little scary. Sunday afternoon Optimist Club members Julie McElroy, Lisa Stobbe, Sophie Ryan, and Liz Carpenter along with help from Amanda and Evalyn Gilland, and Becky Shantz sorted cans and bottles to get a load ready to take to the redemption center. (Nolan Gilland provided moral support from the inside of the family vehicle. It was a little chilly out there.) Alma Mickelson and some Lamoni High School students were busy over the weekend helping organize, getting The Alley ready, and chaperoning the Father/Daughter dance at The Alley Saturday evening. Alma reports that about 40 families attended. Now that was a successful event! (Unfortunately, all that extra work did put Alma behind on her goat and house chores, so she didn’t get to help with the Optimist can sorting Sunday. And those that live on farms know that animals must be taken care of and chores must be done. That’s okay, Alma, you’ll have more chances to sort!) Have a good week, be kind to each other, and let’s hope the weather changes back to seventy degrees and sunshine by the time we plant potatoes. (That

MELINDA MACKEY The Grand River Community will host a LifeServe Blood Drive at the Community Center on Saturday, March 12th from 8:30am to 11:30am. To schedule an appointment just send a text LifeServe at 999-777 or visit lifeservebloodcenter.org. Appointments are required! Construction was set to begin this week on the Grand River bridge and Long Creek bridge. The Grand River bridge will be the first to close, once that is completed; Long Creek Bridge will be closed. So for now, the first suggested detour is: North out of GR on R15 to 140th St, then go E to 145th Ave and back S to J20 to get around the Grand River Bridge. Construction is expected to last for 5 weeks. And a little history: Beginning sometime during 1853, charitable institutions in New York City began sending orphans on trains to the west to find new families, hoping the children would fare better out west than on the streets of New York. Orphan trains began arriving in Iowa during 1854 ending about 1930. During this time over 5000 children were placed in Iowa homes. In 1904 from The Leon Journal: A company of fourteen orphan children were brought to Leon last Friday under the auspices of the New York Children's Aid Society for the purpose of placing them in suitable homes. All of the children were well clothed and bore evidence of good treatment. They were in charge of B.W. Tice, the New York City agent, H.D. Clarke, the Iowa agent, and Anna Laura Hill, the matron of the institution. Messrs. Tice and Clarke are men of good judgment, business tact and ability, and are evidently the right men in the right place. The children are placed on trial for six months. They are to be well clothed and treated, given moral and educational advantages and must remain in the family until they are eighteen years of age. The society has a right to remove a child for reasonable cause and will again take charge of those found unsatisfactory. A large crowd gathered at the opera house on Friday at 2 o'clock p.m. As several children were placed in homes in Leon, Osceola and Decatur; Geo. Petrie, 13 years of age, was removed from a home in Missouri and was placed with W.J. Blades, of Long Creek

LINDA BOOTHE Linda Boothe, Lou Fry and Pam Kent met for lunch on Tuesday to surprise our Birthday Girl, Verla Cole. Verla wasn’t surprised after all the delays and changes but it was nice to celebrate her. Happy Belated Birthday, my Friend! Wednesday morning coffee with the DC Sista’s was a lesson in hand crocheting. Annetta Boswell brought her scrapes of yarn to demonstrate how to make a blanket. I’m curious about the process and learned that there is an art to the tension when working on a project. Our group had perfect attendance with Carol Proctor, Evelyn Hamilton, Paula Howell, Jackie Willis, Annette Boswell and Linda Boothe. The Caroline Hamilton family gathered at the DC Community Center on Saturday for a Grand Celebration! Family and Friends were there to celebrate Caroline for her 96th birthday. Happy Birthday, Caroline!! I got a text message from my son, Curtis, on Saturday morning with a picture of him and Missy. His message was ‘Missy and I took a road trip’. They were in Waco, TX, for the ISU basketball game which was the last game of the regular season. Sadly, the Cyclones didn’t pull out a win against Baylor but they made it a nail bitter by coming from behind in the 4th quarter. Jealousy creeped in when Curtis said they spent most of Saturday at the Magnolia Silos..made me wish I’d hidden in their luggage because I would love to go there myself. lol Our Saturday night storms brought damage, destruction and deaths to several Iowa counties. Fortunately, Decatur County suffered minimal damage. And the war in Ukraine is devastating and heartbreaking. We all need (and I’m sure you probably already are) to pray continually for the victims in Ukraine. Prayers, also, for our fellow Iowans as they clean up and rebuild. Do you need a reason to celebrate and party? Well, here are some suggestions. These folks are having birthdays this coming week and next…Larry Witt, Carol Benedict, Adriene Kelley, Becky Broich, Gage Kelley, Lindsey Green, Mark Tharp, Dave Proctor, Rae Goodell, Larry Hutchison, Cade Vicker, Patricia Kuster, Larry Moffett, and Frank Andrew. My friends, Bill and Allyson Reynolds celebrated their anniversary on March 8th. Happiest Anniversary to you…and they said it wouldn’t last. lol

CD Rodeo Team Reads to Elementary By Reece Hill Every year on March 2nd schools across the country celebrate National 'Read Across America' Day. This day is also commonly referred to as “Dr. Seuss Day” as it also falls on the same day as the famed author's birthday. To celebrate the day, the Central Decatur Rodeo Team, accompanied by one rodeo clown, took a trip down to the South Elementary and read to the young students. Thank you to the Central Decatur Rodeo Team for taking the time out of their day to read to the students!

Lack of Respect at CD By Maddy Leahy “Kids will be kids...” I’m sure you have all heard that phrase associated with some excuse as to why a child or teenager acted the way they did. The truth is, our school is facing a lot of problems right now. Mental health, lunch food shortages, and the lack of respect shown towards classmates and staff. As a senior who has attended this school since preschool, I can safely say that I have never witnessed the disrespect more than I have these past few years. Maybe this is just my parents finally rubbing off on me, but I was raised to treat teachers with respect - I mean my Mom did tell me that she would “back the school” if I ever did something extremely disrespectful, which is why I only got in serious trouble in preschool. I feel like now if you get sent to have a chat with Principal Johnson, you get praised by your fellow classmates. Teachers are not perfect either, I mean they are humans. I am a firm believer in standing up

3 Advance to State Speech

for what you believe in and standing up for yourself, but if you're arguing with a teacher just because you don’t want to do your work, there really isn’t an excuse on your behalf. However, they are here for you if you need someone to talk to about a problem or situation you cannot talk to your classmates about. Everybody has bad days, but that doesn’t give any one an excuse to treat them with less respect. Be the bigger person and walk away if someone challenges you to do something disrespectful. If you have a problem with another student, go to the administration about it or handle it off school grounds. Coming from a small school, it's a given that word travels fast. On my count, there have been nine physical fights on school grounds just this year. I realize there is a story behind each one, and I’m not trying to belittle anyone's problems. However, just because you are mad at someone doesn’t give you the right to make your anger the entire school's problem either. Talk to the school counselor, a teacher, or a friend about what is going on rather than resorting to what should be your last option.

Three Qualified for State Archery By Reece Hill Every year one of the most overlooked sports at Central Decatur is the archery team. Over the years, Central Decatur has enjoyed regularly sending archers to compete at the state competition. This year was no different for the Cardinals, with three people qualifying for the state meet. The students that competed in the state competition are Lorenzo Austin and Leighanna Bundt in the bullseye shoot, where they shot at the standard round target. Courtney Olsen also qualified for the 3-D shoot, which involves shooting at six animal shaped targets. Central Decatur did not have enough archers to field a full team this year so everyone competed individually. They had been practicing and competing in meets managed by the Iowa DNR for four months leading up to the meet. Students also have the opportunity to learn about archery and the National Archery in the Schools Program in class and shoot at the same targets the archers use.

Pictured l-r: Madison Leahy, Cadence Clark, and Addiston Graham, participated in District Speech Contest on Saturday, February 26 at Shenandoah High School. They did a great job with all three receiving I ratings in Solo Musical Theater. They all advance to State Speech Contest which will be held March 12 in Adel.

Track Practice Begins at CD

“Our goal is definitely to return to state, our team has already talked about beating the school record again, and we believe that we can medal this year. I am also kinda concerned about the weather, I don’t run well in the cold and it has rained at state every year,” said Isaiah Brunk, a member of last year's 4x800 team. “All I want to do is go fast,” stated a confident Gunnar Smith, also a member of the 4x800 team. “First I need a haircut, and second everyone is really excited to go out there and run with the wind,” shared Tyke Hullinger, a member of the shuttle hurdle team. “I hope to compete my best and make it back to state this year, and maybe win POI in high jump,” said River Hamaker, who qualified for state in said event. There’s a lot to be excited about around the track team right now and all the runners are working hard to make sure it’s a great season.

By Reece Hill The winter sports' season is over, boy's basketball won their conference, girls finished third in the conference, and Tegan Carson placed fifth at the state wrestling tournament. With those sports coming to a close, the spring season has begun. Golf will start soon, preseason baseball workouts are underway, and track practices have begun. There's a lot to look forward to for the track team this year. They are returning a large majority of last year's runners including multiple state qualifiers. Last year Central Decatur sent teams to state for the boy’s 4x800 meter relay, boy’s shuttle hurdle, girl’s long jump, and girl’s high jump. The girl's track team is also adding three freshmen who were a part of a middle school state championship shuttle hurdle team.

rounding fields to the east of his home. Back in Center Township, numerous friends, neighbors and family had gathered to repair the Vaughn's roof, which lost shingles and to make a plan to clean up the downed sheds and debris that was left everywhere. Across the section to the north, Mike Yutzy and Brian Stutzman were beginning to assess their losses as metal from sheds and broken trees were spread everywhere. At the Charles Linhart farm, located just across the road from Stutzmans and Yutzys, damage was done to a shed, they lost some cattle, fences were down and machinery was tangled up. Earlier in the day, the Linharts were holding a purebred sale in their barn and were thankful that the buyers had left before the storm occurred. At around 4:30 p.m., a local resident saw two weather spotters parked along Hwy 2 and the Lineville Road.

Trees were twisted, but a small water tower was left untouched near the the Mike and Juanita Yutzy farm northeast of town. The hatch of their car was open and full of equipment that they are known to use when chasing storms. They were parked less than a mile south of where the tornado was believed to have started. Electricity was finally turned back on in Center Township at around 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening after being out for over 30 hours. There was no report on how many poles were broken. Again 30 scored arrows for a possible score of 300. Central Decatur Archers have practiced twice a week for the past 4 months, mostly in the north building at the fairgrounds. We appreciate the fair board for allowing us to do this. The archers have also shot in over a dozen tournaments over the past two months working towards getting scores good enough to qualify them in the State Tournament that was held March 5th and 6th at the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. We had over 20 archers in the program this year and did not

have enough in any of the three divisions to field a team so archers competed for individual spots in the tournament. Curious Austin and Leighanna Bundt were successful in qualifying for the bullseye shoot. Courtney Olsen qualified in the 3-D shoot. It was an interesting Saturday, commented Coach Gene Olsen. A couple of our shooters had completed half their competition when all of a sudden everyone's cellphones all went off with the weather warning alarming everyone about the tornado warning we were under, so we took a break and sent 2,000 of us under shelter. The results from state were Courtney scored a 233. She is ranked 138th out of 144 in high school girls; 36 out of 39 for 11th grade girls; and overall girls' rank, 238 out of 284. At state, Lorenzo scored a 269. He is ranked 158 out of 391 in high school boys; 33 out of 97 for 10th grade boys; and overall boys' rank, 232 out of 1006. Leighanna scored a 262 at state. She is ranked 87 out of 328 in middle school girls; 43 out of 144 for 8th grade girls; and overall girls' rank, 303 out of 780. We appreciate the coaches and parents that have helped to make this possible.
