Flag Retirement Box Installed in Courthouse In partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC), Decatur County has installed a flag retirement box, at no cost to the county. It is located on the first-floor foyer of the Decatur County Courthouse, 207 North Main Street, Leon. The United States Flag Code prescribes flag etiquette – everything from flying it near other flags to instructions on how to raise and lower it. "The flag, when it is in such

condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning," says the Code. Flags should be folded respectfully before being placed in the box. Decatur County Veterans Affairs and American Legion Post 80 will then be responsible for the proper disposal of the worn flags. If you have any questions, please contact the Decatur County Veterans Affairs at 641-446-7494.

By Rodger Gatton There's a new business in Garden Grove, The Stag Inn, Bar & Grill. The Stag, once known as the Lady Amber Inn and a longtime landmark in the town, is open and ready to serve. The building was purchased in 2011 by Richard and Jennifer Vecchio. After setting for about three years while the Vecchios decided what they wanted to do with it, or if they wanted to do it, a six-year renovation was begun. The Vecchios are not exactly newbies, either to Garden Grove, or in bringing new life to old buildings. Many people are aware they occupy the banker's "mansion" in the east part of town which, coincidentally, was the home of C. S. and Kate Stearns, the original builders and owners of the inn which was built in 1906. Jennifer, Richard and their two children, Brooke and Brandon, who are now both in college, moved to Garden Grove from Miami, Florida in 2010, following an extensive restoration of their home as purchased six years earlier in 2004. Jennifer is a former Iowa girl, who grew up in a little town near DeWitt. She chose

law as a profession, which led her to Miami, and she joined a firm where, with the advent of working from home via computer, she still works today. Richard was a New York boy, from Long Island, who chose a career as a chef, then eventually also moved to Miami, which is where he and Jennifer met. While living in south Florida, Richard worked as a chef at beachside restaurants in hotels in Palm Beach and Boca Raton, including The Breakers and The Boca Raton Resort. The Vecchios' renovation of the Garden Grove inn started with the tuck-pointing of the brickwork, and eventually included renovations and repairs of just about everything, while retaining as many historical features as possible. The Stag had a very successful grand

opening in December of 2021, and special celebrations were held for New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day. At present, The Stag Bar & Grill is open from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays, and 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The menu features traditional American food such as cheeseburgers, chicken and bacon sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches, mac n' cheese, chicken wings, and "The Bentley Burger" (burgers and waffles, the Midwest's "answer" to the South's chicken and waffles), as well as cheese curds, nachos, onion rings and fries. The Stag also offers a fully stocked bar including specialty beers and cocktails such as "Southern Iowa Lemonade" and the "Decatur County Sunset." Rooms at The Stag

Liberty Hall to Open April 1st – No Joke! Provided by Steve Smith - Liberty Hall Historic Site When Liberty Hall closed its door for its annual winter hiatus in December 2019, no one would have foreseen that those doors wouldn’t be opened to the public for 28 months. “Mark your calendars for the April 1st weekend – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,” Steve Smith, Site Director, said, “and write ‘Liberty Hall Open House!’ We’re finally reopening and looking forward to welcoming everyone.” Liberty Hall volunteers will be available to explain and give historical facts. Along with the open house, Liberty Hall announced a fundraiser to help the historic landmark get ready for the public. Funds will be used for the opening and future

restoration and repair of the historic site. The fund drive includes an offering of a black and white silkscreen print of Liberty Hall to anyone donating $100 or more. “We have 10 silkscreens available,” Smith said, “so prints are only offered to the first 10 who contact Liberty Hall.” To contribute, contact Smith at (360) 362-0585 or by email steveatlibertyhall@gmail.com. The prints were produced last semester in Graceland University professor Karen Gergely’s Printed Image class. Gergely challenged her students to develop a printmaking project that would get their work out of the safety of the studio and into the community. Some students chose to create a silkscreen that would help market a local project, service,

Inn are available for any night. Also, for family events or reunions, the entire second floor can be rented as a single unit, or the whole building. The old hotel originally had about 10 guest rooms on the second floor, with shared bathrooms. The inn today boasts three queen-sized rooms, one smaller, single room, and a suite, suitable for a small family, and all of the rooms have private baths. Jennifer and Richard report that business has been brisk and that the response to their new endeavor has been better than expected. They are grateful for all the support they have been receiving from the "locals" and also from people of all ages coming from other towns around and outside the area as well. They are especially pleased that The Stag has become not just a place to stop in for dinner. It's turned out to be the kind of place where people from all around, while having drinks and/or dinner, will find relatives or friends who've also stopped in, and maybe do a little catching-up. They have found a (continued on page 10) or organization. Nontradition student Gary Rees chose Liberty Hall. He used a picture of the site and with graphic art filters created what he called “an almost abstract black and white rendering” of Liberty Hall which he then made into a silkscreen. He completed the process by imprinting 10 Liberty Hall reproductions. Each art piece is numbered and signed. “I liked the idea for a Liberty Hall fundraiser that Gary proposed,” Smith said, “especially after I saw the finished product. I think it’s the kind of artwork a Liberty Hall supporter would be proud to display.” Gary always says it takes a village whenever he works on an art assignment as his way of crediting classmates for their help with his projects,” Gergely said. “I think he deserves a lot of credit for this project and hope that his ‘Lamoni village’ responds by donating to Liberty Hall.”

Happy Birthday, Dave! Thursday I had just spent my life savings to fill my car up with gas when I got a phone call from my friend, Allyson Reynolds. I told her where I was and she said, “Well, just stop by for coffee on your way home’…so I did. I picked up a lunch from a fast food joint so we had a picnic lunch together and OH such a good time. I could smell her corned beef and cabbage in the slow cooker and saw a cobbler she had just taken out of the oven. I thought about inviting myself but headed home anyway. Lol Sunday, March 20th was the first day of Spring. Hooray!! My plants are peeking thru with their new growth and I have the fever to get out there and dig in

the dirt. Rains on the way so the grass will get green again and more plants to break their way into my favorite season. It seemed like a long winter to me. Happy Birthday this coming week to Frank Andrew, Gary Toney, James Hamilton, Bill Manchester, John Thompson, Angie DeLong Friedman, Kathy Kelley, Eva Opfer and Lavelle OsbornRowe. Thought for the week: It’s better to have a friend with two chins than to have one with two faces. Contact me at 4423595 to rent the DC Community Center. Later…Linda

Well, we made it back from somewhat sunny Florida. However, the 20 hour drive should have been left to the imagination. Ha! All in all it really wasn't that bad. I know I threw a lot of people a curve ball before I left by printing two papers in one week. I do apologize, but that was the only way I could be in both places at once. I hope I didn't, but if I happened to forget something that should have been in the paper please let me know.

I attempted to go through my emails and stacks of notes with a fine-toothed comb but sometimes things just slip through. Thank you all for understanding. Deadlines and trying to be with your family sometimes don't jive but I did and will continue to do the best I can. It was fun to watch the Simpson Storm Softball play 14 games over a 10-day stretch. Tonya and I definitely appreciate the time with the family. PRICELESS!!! oOo Well, back to the grind, as they say. I'll give you details of our cross country trip coming and going from Florida in the next couple of weeks. Until the next time... So Long!

Council. Volunteers will be needed to help out. Even with all the old trees out there are still several branches down in the park. From the LifeServe Blood Center, the donation held in Grand River will save 44 lives. A huge thank you to everyone that donated. Have a great week!

Grand River

MELINDA MACKEY Recently I visited with Max Heckman with the Grand River American Legion and we have an exciting addition to the city of Grand River. The Legion is in the process of obtaining a grant and donations for a Veterans Memorial! The monument selected is a polished black monument on a base measuring 48” wide, 60”tall and 8” thick. The monument will have laser etching of a flag in the background and military branches. The expected cost for the monument is $12,560 plus another $1,500 for the laser etching. The Legion hosted a dinner over the weekend to help raise the funds. If you would like to make a donation for the monument, those should be sent to: Joe Franksain for the Veterans Monument at 1985 225th Ave, Osceola, Iowa 50213 You can also call Max at 641340-3115 if you need more information. The Legion has received donations from Charles Gabus Ford and Karl Chevrolet. The Grand River Legion has helped make our community better with their work on Shewmaker Park, the Community Center Shelter house, the flags around town as well as the Easter Egg Hunt and many other activities and updates. Having a monument in town to honor our Legion and all of our community that has served should be something we all want. You can find Max’s full interview on our Grand River Facebook page. Services were held for Joe Shields on Saturday at Slade O’Donnell’s in Leon. He was a friend to many in town and he will missed greatly by his family. There has been some recent clean up in town of a property on the east edge of town and it looks so nice! They have done an amazing job! Spring cleanup for the parks has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 9th by the City

Andover

LIZ CARPENTER Have you ever thought about the definition of a neighbor? The dictionary says it is “a person living near or next door or to be situated next to or very near a place.” Here at Andover, neighbor means more than that. A neighbor is someone that lives close by or has lived in the neighborhood and now lives somewhere else. A neighbor also helps out others in the neighborhood because it is the neighborly thing to do and neighbors look out for and take care of neighbors in the neighborhood. We have neighbors in Andover. Good ones! Gary Osborn’s uncle Jim Perry passed away Thursday the 17th. His parents were Eugene and Arlie Perry. Jim was born in Andover. He was 80 and his funeral was Saturday the 19th at Burlington, Iowa. He loved coming back to Andover to visit the old home place. Please keep Jim’s family in your prayers. Andrew Lane helped Liz Carpenter with her cattle when the vets came to check them out on Tuesday morning. Clay Parkhurst and Breanna Main had a good weekend. They spent time with friends and family all weekend long and, the big news, Breanna found her wedding dress on Saturday! Congratulations, Breanna! Liz Carpenter and honorary Optimist Club member Jim Coulthard took a load of redeemable bottles and cans to the redemption center in Indianola on Thursday. Drew Parkhurst’s children Keegan and Kaislyn enjoyed a trip to Des Moines to swim

and go to the park. Ivan Lane and his dog, Trouble, stopped by Liz Carpenter’s on Sunday afternoon. They were out for a drive in Ivan’s Ranger enjoying the lovely weather. Getting in a few rays of sun before the rain starts for the week. Rod and Paula Hutton also stopped by Liz Carpenter’s Sunday afternoon. They were checking on a mysterious young black heifer calf that appeared in Liz’s herd last Monday. She thought it might be Rod’s but it wasn’t his. Lonny Lane stopped to check on the heifer as well. Not sure it is his either. The heifer went to the sale barn where they will catch it and check out the vet tag in its ear and maybe figure out who it belongs to. Hopefully the mystery will be solved by next week’s news. Kim and Maurice stayed home this week. With the rain forecast for this week, it's probably a good idea to stay home again this week. Benson Parkhurst enjoyed lunch at Grandpa Larry’s Sunday. Donna Ogier went to Lamoni to see sister Jan Fisher one day last week. She also stopped at the vet’s office for dog tick meds because it’s that time of year again. Better stock up! Cotton, Coy, and Cole Osborn stayed all night Friday night with Grandpa Gary and Grandma Sandy Osborn. Alma and Ronnie Mickelson helped celebrate Kamarie Pierschbacher’s birthday at the golf course on Sunday with lots of family and friends. Kamarie got a new puppy! Yay for puppies! Kamarie’s age? It is the fourth prime number. She will be in single digits for a couple more years before starting on double digit birthdays. Happy Birthday, Kamarie! Jim and Garnet Coulthard visited Liz Carpenter’s farm on Saturday afternoon to see the cows. Lots of cattle work at Liz Carpenter’s last week. Much appreciaton to Andrew Lane and Cassie Daleske for helping Liz out with a heifer that had to work really hard to have her calf. Andrew and Cassie are good neighbors! Liz Carpenter managed to squeeze in an overnight trip to Des Moines Friday night to visit her friend Julie Elliott. Have a good week, be kind to each other, please pray for our country and other countries around the world. There seems to be no end of troubles everywhere these days. And take care of your neighbors. Maybe that is where the solutions start.

Admiral Mike Franken visits Decatur County

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mike Franken met with a group of Decatur County residents at the Leon Community Center for over an hour last Tuesday, March 8, in his campaign to defeat Senator Charles Grassley.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor,

The LJR ran an article from the State Historical Society of Iowa in the March 2nd edition. I enjoyed the article up to the paragraph that contained the statement “As Thomas Jefferson noted, an ‘informed citizenry’ is essential to a functioning democracy.” If people quickly read over it, it would be easy to think that Thomas Jefferson made the whole statement about democracy. The quote in context is “A well informed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny.” Thinking that that statement came from a founder of our country, one would be led to believe that our nation is a democracy. However, this isn’t true. The USA is a democratic republic. (https://constitutionus.com/democracy/ what-type-of-government-does-the-ushave/) Technically with the quote placement they weren’t wrong (he did say the words “informed citizenry”), but very misleading; which is disappointing for an article from the people who should get it right. Dear Editor:

The State of The Union address by Joe Biden was the worst I have ever seen. He would get issues and countries mixed up, for example when he said the Iranian people instead of the Ukrainians. Nancy Pelosi was clapping with her hands and wringing her wrists (as did Chuck Schumer when he stood up by himself and started clapping). As Raymond Arroyo said of Nancy "Her actions looked like a fly approaching a sugar bowl." The whole

thing was just weird and bizarre. If Nancy needed a reason to tear up a speech it would've been this one. It was a lot of lies and nonsense. The invasion of Ukraine lies squarely at Biden's feet. It was a total disaster the way he allowed it to end in Afghanistan and it emboldened Putin. Now we see Americans fleeing 2 countries in the short time of Bidens regime. There were no wars in the 4 years Trump was President because he portrayed strength and had the policy of America first. Biden has bought into the green pipe dreams of environmental wackos like Bernie Sanders and John Kerry and clamped down on American energy. His anti-American oil insanity is funding Putin and his war. Now every day Americans are taking the brunt of high gas and food prices. Gas now at $4 and diesel fuel at $5. Who knows where it will go? Remember what Biden did in his 1st day in office? He shut down pipelines and drillings

in this country when we were energy independent under Trump? Bidens solution, just buy an electric car. You couldn't get a book big enough to write all the damage that Biden and his handlers have done to America in a very short time. Here are some examples / Murder rates soared 30% last year, no control over our borders, critical race theory being forced on our children, insanely high inflation where we are forced to fuel our cars or our stomachs, identity politics. Our enemies see a downsized, woke military, and that the greatest threat to the world is climate change. Above all they see a declining superpower beset with internal strife and going about the business of questioning its own cultural values. So for those of you who voted for Joe Biden, thanks, you can suffer with those of us that didn't. May God bless America, Ivan Stoltzfus, 20451 262nd Ave. Leon, IA. 50144

Expanded Urology Services Coming Soon to DCH At Decatur County Hospital, we are constantly looking for ways to evolve so that we can meet the health care needs of our region. Based on the high demand from our patients, one of the services we know could benefit from more available appointments is urology. Dr. Brian Gallagher, MD, is highly-regarded by his patients, and we’re excited to share that starting in April, Dr. Gallagher will be

able to serve even more patients at Decatur County Hospital. Beginning in April, Dr. Gallagher will visit the DCH Outpatient Clinic 2 days each month, approximately every other week. This additional day of service will allow us to significantly increase our capacity to serve those who need this service, and will provide the opportunity to schedule an appointment quickly after a referral. The urology clinic focuses on conditions related to the urinary tract (including kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and adrenal glands); and the male reproductive system (including penis, prostate and testicles). Dr. Gallagher helps patients by diagnosing and treating bladder disorders, bladder cancer, benign prostatic

Dr. Gallagher also provides outpatient surgical procedures to treat these conditions as needed, along with traditional outpatient procedures such as vasectomies. Dr. Gallagher can also help with women’s health concerns. Don’t travel far from home for your specialty care. The DCH Outpatient Clinic hosts 15 specialty providers each month, and we have plenty of appointments to meet your needs.
