The 2021 Citizen of the Year was presented to Sally Dykes, during the North Lumber and Home Center Open House. Pictured are JoBeth Smith, Leon Chamber President, Sally Dykes, and Terry Boyd.

The 2021 Citizen of the Year was presented to Sally Dykes, during the North Lumber and Home Center Open House held this past Saturday, June 4. Terry Boyd, a prior Citizen of the Year, presented this award to Sally, in Doctor Larry Richard's ab-

sence, who was the 2020 Citizen of the Year. Terry read the following which Doctor Richard had written, saying it was easy to write when it's the truth and from the heart. I think it safe to say that the 2021 Citizen of the Year did not have a high pro-

file, spectacular year in 2021. This would be in keeping with the very persona that makes her a prototype citizen of the year. If you review the list of prior honorees, you will find very few, if any, explosive, Leon shaping, major event makers, who made

the list based on a single year's attributes. They, and she, are more honored in a year in which they are chosen in recognition of long-term, steady, consistent, and often unheralded and behind the scenes efforts. These are the citizens who keep the city viable and vibrant, and they do it without the intention of being honored, or even acknowledged. Such is the case with this year's citizen of the year. When was the last time a charity event went without a North Lumber door prize, raffle, or contribution? Has it ever occurred that an event lacked a sponsorship from North Lumber, be it rodeo, Leon Noel, or any one of many others? How often have we seen Sally's smiling face in a service line, be it at church, school or other community event? Count the times she has been present for sporting events, concerts, fine arts and other school

events. None of this has been done in the name of increasing her sales, or making a presence known, rather because of her pride and connection with her community. As she receives this award, I'm guessing she will say something to the effect of "shucks it wasn't anything anyone else wouldn't do." She will then go on to continue the very services that have made her the humble, but very deserving recipient of the award, except that now she will know that we, her fellow citizens, are aware and appreciate her very much for them.

a showroom that includes more displays of kitchen, bath and cabinets to help customers visually make choices on products. Aside from selling lumber and home center products, North Lumber offers other services that include a telehandler where they are able to unload material at the job site and lift

products to the roof or wherever needed. They also have flatbed trucks and trailers that are used to transport large quantities of material right to the job site. North Lumber and Home Center is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to noon.

North Lumber and Home Center in Leon held a Customer Appreciation Open House this past Saturday, June 4, serving over 300 hamburgers to their dedicated customers, family and friends. North Lumber has

been operating out of this new location at 108 NE 3rd Street, since November 8. They purchased the building at the beginning of 2021 and were working on renovations throughout last year. From the begin-

ning, Sally said they wanted to increase their contractor base and offer an expanded inventory. As part of these renovations to the building as captured above, in addition to the lumber and building supplies, they now have

Class of 1967 Holds 55th High School Reunion

Grand River

MELINDA MACKEY The weather held out for the weekend so all the activities went well. The KSIB tractor ride went off without a hitch. We had 160 riders signed up and 142 came for the day. The street dance at Patty's also went well with a hayride around town and some really great music. Progress continues on the new shelter house as the path for the sidewalk from the road to the shelter house is ready for the next step. Don't forget coffee every morning through the week, it's been there for just over a year now and still a popular thing to do! Karma and I found a neat snake over the Memorial Day weekend. I had never seen one before, but they have been spotted in our area. From what I have read and pictures I found; it was an Eastern Milk snake. They can get to be fairly big, but they are harmless and really very pretty (if you're a snake fan). They're nonvenomous and usually pretty shy and don't come out to where they can be seen, eating mice, voles and even other little snakes. They don't like to bite, they will almost chew instead, but they do give off a musk by rattling the end of their tail. The one I found was just a little baby, but I had someone share a video of an adult. It was fun to see something other than bull snakes and garter snakes. Have a great week!

Andover

LIZ CARPENTER Writing the Andover News column is usually a fun activity because I get to report exciting news like the arrival of baby Kyra Parkhurst last week. Unfortunately, there are also times when I must report sad news. This week was one of those sad times. It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I report the passing of Margaret “Teeny” Gibson. Teeny wrote the Andover News for years starting in the late 1980s or early 1990s. She was quite involved

The Central Decatur Class of 1967 held their 55th reunion on May 28 at the Community Center in Leon. Pictured front from left – Dan Dale, Connie Hembry Edgington, Sue LeVea Ruble, Debbie Daniels Van Nostrand, Linda Crouse DeFeo, Cindy Havens Boyd and Janice Quick Fosdick. Middle row from left – Steve Willis, Jim Allred, Alan Spohnheimer, Deborah Briddell, Pauline Bright Burlinggame, Pam Worden, Donna Rollins Lysinger, Fonda Williams McClure and Norma Crawford Sturm. Back row from left – Jerry Board, Jim Rash, Merrill Hamilton, Tim Buckingham, John Allpress, Bill Hamaker, Charlie Sage, Rick Craig, Rob Kilgore and David Waddell. (photo by TyLea Redman) with all things Andover and quite a few things Lamoni and Eagleville, so writing the news was a perfect fit for her. She also had a great sense of humor and wry commentary that made the news quite fun to read. People and particularly family were very important to Teeny. She faithfully attended family reunions and kept in touch with family and friends far and near. She lived at Andover until just a few years ago when she moved to the Lee’s Summit, Missouri, area where she was closer to her sister Ina Lou Myrick and son Robert “Monty” Gibson. Teeny will be greatly missed by so many because she touched so many lives throughout her 90+ years on this earth. I’m sure there was a glorious and joyful reunion in Heaven with family and friends last Friday night when she arrived. In honor of Teeny’s many years of teaching math and her love of math puzzles, here is a math puzzle for her age. Teeny’s age on her September 29th birthday this year would have been the first prime number to the fifth power times the second prime number. (The answer is 100 minus the first prime squared.) Rest in peace my dear friend Teeny. You have earned your eternal reward. Friday Philinda drove to Lee’s Summit to be with her friend and cousin Teeny Margaret Gibson. While there she visited with Teeny’s sister Ina Lou Myrick, and Teeny’s sons Steve Gibson and Monty Gibson. Kim Erwin traveled to Minnesota last week to pick up her grandson Cam for summer fun. Holly, Dylan, and Benson Parkhurst enjoyed having lots of visitors last week to see baby Kyra. Breanna Main has started full time at the hospital in Albany, Missouri.

Congratulations to Breanna! According to Clay Parkhurst, the old time game of tag has been modified to fit the technology age. You can now play the game of tag by “tagging” each other in other ways besides literally tagging them. So here is a message for Breanna Main from her sister Jazmine “tag, you’re it!” Cassie Daleske and Andrew Lane were busy last week as they got their cows turned out to greener pastures and the bulls kicked out on Friday. They're all happy and that’s a good thing for the cattle and their humans. Ivan Lane had a quiet week around the farm. Cassie Daleske’s and Andrew Lane’s boys, Axel and Kipton, did the Eagleville porch crawl Saturday night with Chad and Chrissy Wiig. Cassie reports they were the Blythedale Hillbillies, and they had a blast. Sounds like fun to me! Sandy Osborn went to grandson Coy Osborn’s ballgame at Eagleville Thursday. Saturday grandson Cotton Osborn’s 4H group the Pawnee Pepper 4H came and saw Cotton’s heifer in the lot as well as going to other members homes to see their project they are doing. The 4H program provides excellent learning opportunities for children. Monday Liz Newberry, Liz Carpenter, Laura Williams, Kay Herring, Amanda McBirnie, Derrick Beaumier, Clarissa McBirnie, enjoyed an impromptu taco lunch with Philinda. In case you were wondering or wanted to know, Philinda really loves tacos! On Tuesday Don and Pat Boswell came to Philinda Snethen’s to celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary, On Saturday evening Philinda went with Kay Herring to Nathan Silver’s and Becky Jones’ wedding reception at the Lamoni Community Center. They had a wonderful time and enjoyed tacos. Liz Carpenter attended the wedding reception of Nathan Silver and Becky Jones on Saturday evening. Donna Ogier and her other half made rounds to the cemeteries on the 30th. When they got home, Tony’s grandson Beau and his family were there to visit. Donna and Tony were so happy because they hadn't seen them since last fall. Donna’s granddaughter Angela

finished her 1st year at UNI with a 3.4 GPA and is taking 2 accounting classes this summer for a head start on 2nd year. Way to go Angela! Gerald Payton from Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and his daughter Jennifer were back visiting over the Memorial Day weekend and stopped by Andover Cemetery and stopped to visit Liz Carpenter on Tuesday. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and remember to hold your family members and friends close while you have them.

Weldon

KATHY MASON History – Memories of Weldon by Beatrice Braden Thorp Was born in 1907. I grew up there and went to school 19121924. I started school in the old building in September 1912. I was only four, but Grace Lockwood, the primary teacher, told mother it would be all right. Before I started to school, the primary, first grade, second grade, and third grade were in one room. Only four of us started that year – Gladys Liggett, Lois Lowe, Harold Pearcy and me. Mid-year, we were moved up to first grade. After that there was no primary grade. In 1917, this building burned. The business section in 1912 was much larger. Mr. Warren was the banker, with Gerda Kline as his able assistant. Ed Lockwood had a big general store selling yard goods, shoes and notions in one part. The other section had complete line of groceries. He also bought butter and eggs. This building burned in 1915 and his next store was smaller, but he still sold yard goods and sewing accessories, along with groceries. Bill Caron had a restaurant and barber shop combined. Later, was my uncle Harve Kimberlin and Clyde Garton had the restaurants. Dr. Ollie Jamison, home town boy, was an excellent doctor. Later he built a two-story hospital well equipped and outstanding in

PUBLIC NOTICES DELINQUENT TAX LIST

OFFICE OF COUNTY TREASURER, DECATUR COUNTY, LEON, IOWA, JUNE 8, 2022 Notice is hereby given that on Monday, the 20th of June 2022 at the Decatur County Courthouse, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on said day, I will offer for sale all land and town lots on which all taxes were assessed for the year of 2020 and prior years; and special taxes due 2022 and prior years, and which at the time of the sale remain delinquent and unpaid; the sale to be adjourned from time to time not to exceed sixty (60) days from the day of the sale, at the same hours on the day mentioned until such land and all town lots have been sold, of which the following to the best of my knowledge is a true and correct list. The “Total” Column indicates the amount owed for taxes, including interest and costs, for all property listed under the landowner’s name. Property that has been delinquent for two years, and if not sold at the regular tax sale, it shall be sold for the amount of the general taxes, interest, penalty and costs, and if there be no such bid, then the property is to be purchased by the county as a county tax sale. Taxes are listed in the title holder’s name even though some may be sold on contract and will be so listed until deed is recorded in contract purchaser’s name. Contract buyer’s name, if known, is listed and so noted. After the sale, if the parcel is not redeemed within the period provided in Chapter 447, Code of Iowa, the right to redeem expires and a deed may be issued. NOTE TO TAX SALE BIDDERS: Tax Sale Bidders must be registered by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, in order to participate in the Tax Sale.

Janet Pierson Treasurer, Decatur County, IA

The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water posed a health risk. More information about contaminants or potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-4264791). Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. LEON WATER SUPPLY is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. ADDITIONAL HEALTH INFORMATION Infants and young children are typically more vulnerable to lead in drinking water than the general population. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home's plumbing. If you are concerned about elevated lead levels in your home's water, you may wish to have your water tested and flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using tap water. Additional information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-4264791). Hunting Bear in the Yukon Successful for Doc

Dr. Larry Richard and his black bear taken in the Yukon.

by Dr. Richard What of Dr. Richard's hunting and fishing stories? I figured he'd be doing a lot of that now that he is retired. He might as well be working if he can't hunt and fish and write about it. A question I often get will now be answered, and satisfied. Covid put a dent in my ability to get to the places I wanted to visit and enjoy. May, however, finally found Connie and me on our way to a hunting adventure. No one had been in Alberta hunting bears for 3 years now, and some big ones should be available. My house has no room for more, but daughter Leigh said a rug for her house would be welcome if I got one. I had often told Connie of the fine hospitality the McKinnons provided when I was in their Yukon camp. The Alberta camp looked like an even more pleasant place for her to enjoy with me while we were hunting. So, covid protocols, arriveCan apps, TSA screening and all, we booked a trip to Edmonton for this May. I had to promise Sharron that I would make applesauce pancakes once, a job I eagerly accepted. Flattery will get you my cooking attention. I diligently practiced with my bow, including a 3 D bear target, as it would not do to do a less than good job shooting a bear at less than 20 yards. My gear list expanded as I noted how cold it had been here, and added several hundred miles north. In fact, the ice would not be off Calling Lake until after our trip was over. Cold weather gear and raingear can be removed, but not retrieved from home when one is in the “bush”. Our first flight was without a hitch, but a late start and “lucky” random covid test in Calgary made us miss a flight. Fortunately the Calgary to Edmonton flight happens often and we got delayed only a few hours, and time had been built into the itinerary to accommodate. Gear and luggage all were with us as well. Chris picked us and three other hunters up the next morning at 9:00 a.m. as per plan. We, save the outfitter's son and two local youth, would be the first hunters in the camp for three years. Optimism tempered by uncertainty due to that, permeated our two hour drive north. Four more hunters would arrive by other means the next day. We got acquainted and instructed over the next few hours. Connie became an instant friend to Debbie the camp cook and Jersey the resident Labrador re-

triever. I was the only hunter who had ever been bear hunting before. Bear camp timing is another experience. Lunch occurs about 3:00 p.m. and hunting commences 4:30 p.m. even on day one. Hunting proceeds until dark and hunters are picked up by respective guides at dark thirty. Maybe later if the other guy your guide is attending has a bear to retrieve. Supper happens when all are reassembled, perhaps 11:00 p.m. to midnight. Breakfast is 9ish. Bears from previous day are photoed and skinned from then. Day one was an epitome of ugly. Snow still was banked everywhere, and interesting ATV rides complete with winching out of trouble were the norm. I was settled on a tree stand overlooking an opening about 5:00 p.m. In front of me was a 50 gallon drum of oats and honey, a pile of oats covered with butterscotch cake icing, and a foul smelling beaver carcass. About 6:00 p.m. it began to drizzle to add to the 3 degrees Centigrade temp. (Fahrenheit = 9/5 Centigrade plus 32) Boy was I glad for Gore Tex and fleece. My hands began to get cold, and I was again glad planning had me bring along some hand warmers. As the tree got wetter, ice water began to drip down the back of my neck. Aha, the neck gaiter in my pack was planned for just such an event. Snow, I had no answer for, and just endured, as for the first time in my hunting career, I counted down minutes not as opportunities for action, but as for time to go home. No cell service, so leaving early was not an option. I determined at 9:45 p.m. that I could no longer see bowsights well enough to shoot, and took the arrow off the string to put back in my quiver. As I turned to do so, there was one large economy size black bear at the beaver. I briefly reconsidered the light situation and opted not to rearm the bow. Besides, my motion had put the bear on alert and he moved off a ways. He completely vacated the area as the guide and quad appeared a few minutes later. The site looked like it would be good to me, but I was glad to get my hands dry and warm in the truck a short ride later. The ride home through slick muddy forest roads was further accented by myriads of huge snowflakes obscuring vision. Wyatt navigated it nicely, and I was glad it was he who was at the wheel. Did I mention Wyatt? Long tall kid who looked

like a kid, but had immense knowledge and understanding and a very friendly nature. My sighting was one of only two that night in the weather, but the other guy had arrowed a nice color phase bear. I was surprised that Connie was still awake for supper when we got back, but she had been getting a lesson in hockey as she watched the Edmonton Oilers with Chris and Deb. Day two in camp saw the routine of bear skinning after breakfast, naps, and early lunch in action. The lodge was fully investigated in the light, and I began reading a book about Jack O'Connor. Day two in the stand brought in two bears. Number one was a no brainer. Short face, long legs, small abdomen, and not very tall. I watched and photoed him for half an hour. Later, a mediocre bear arrived. He made the second ring on the barrel, but not the top, and with a sight on a big bear, I took only photos and observed bear behavior. More snow was on the ground, but the day was much more pleasant, though equally cold. Campmates had killed two bear, both on the order of the two I had let walk, but as new bear hunters, they were justifiably thrilled. Alberta allows two bears, so they could now keep hunting and look for a bigger one. Day 3 was nearly 10 degrees centigrade, and felt balmy. Bear activity was good, and the mediocre bear from day two arrived early. He feasted on some oats, then climbed the tree to get a couple of mouthfulls of beaver, and took one with him to eat in the underbrush. As he boogied out soon after, I was on full alert. Something

bigger might be coming, and was. From a distance he looked like a shooter. Close up, did not seem as big as the first night's bear, but then it was not dark now. He went directly for the beaver, pulled it down in toto and took it off into the brush, where I watched and listened to him eat it while I planned how I might do things differently the next day to get him into a shooting position. He apparently was not full, as he walked back in and surveyed the other goodies at hand. I determined him to be a shooter and when he looked off at a raven squawking, I drew the bow, set the 20 yard pin on his chest and touched the trigger. One does not see arrows in flight at that speed and distance, but I saw the vanes appear and disappear where I wanted and heard the sharp smack. The bear jumped and made three or four long lunges rapidly, slowed for a couple of steps, wobbled, and fell over in less time than it takes to type it. I now had to wait for the guide to come a couple of hours later to help with his retrieval. I have shot two bears in one night, so I got ready in case a bigger one or a color phase bear presented itself. I watched two more bears in the setup, one which was equally big, but not bigger, so both got a pass. Wyatt and I, mostly Wyatt, with some difficulty got him across the bars of the quad, and we made the ride out a few minutes later. Wyatt told me this was a new stand, and since I'd christened it, it would be Larry's stand forever. I was the envy of the camp this night, after we finally got in around midnight. The neophyte hunters, to a man, allowed they now knew what they were looking for in a bear. Next morning's skinning episode was made more interesting by a young Native American guide who allowed that we ought render some bear fat for various uses. Not being shy or lacking challenge, Connie, with Deb's help did just that. Next morning we made good on our promise and had applesauce pancakes, and shared the recipe with Deb so she could use it in the future. In trying not to overharvest a site, the next night found me in a new site. The setup and bait were the same, in a clearing off a

trail coming from an ice covered lake. Soon after arrival, a black dot appeared, and rapidly became the bear I was after. Wide shouldered, small ears, legs that looked so short that his belly nearly touched the ground. He swaggered as he walked to 80 yards, then took 90 degrees and walked off. I allowed that he might just be walking by, but maybe he was resident and would be back later, since that bait had been “hit”. Three hours later, he did. Mr. Bellydragger got to within 40 yards, and just as I was identifying the tree he would need to go by to be in range, he turned 180 and swaggered off. I was to be picked up second that night, and Wyatt would be “a little late”. That turned out to be 11:30, and even though forewarned, dark in a bear forest turned me just a little hesitant. As it was, congratulations were in order as Brandon, Wyatt's other hunter had killed a nice bear which further delayed my trip home. Day 5 brought an Oilers win. I sat the stand in hopes my bear would return, to no avail. The other group in camp expressed that they were interested in getting a bear for a special reason. Their trip had been planned for 2020 and postponed twice. In the interim, one of their members had gotten covid and died, leaving a wife and two children who wanted a bear rug. Everyone in camp who went out day 6 had that bear in mind. In fact, I decided if no one got him, I would donate mine. After all, the Moores could count on me get-

ting them one later. I sat the stand only to dark that night, but no bear was sighted. One would be sufficient. The other group made good on their promise to get the kids a bear. In fact, the buddies killed three that night to bring the hunting part of the trip to a major successful conclusion. As we made plans for departure, trophy care, and the return to non hunting mode, I made a few extra conclusions. I think me leaving was like any other hunter leaving, but they all wanted Connie to stay on. She had been an added plus for the staff and other hunters especially the cook. Chris and Sharron and their children, Wyatt (little Wyatt not to be confused with guide) and Montana had put hockey in her mind to where she could discuss it reasonably. Those of you who know her, know that she never lacks for contribution to effort, even here as a paying guest. Even Jersey wanted to come along with her as we packed into the van to leave. The trip home had no more than the usual airport/customs/ weather concerns. We discussed when and with whom I ought to return as my spouse now knew why I valued my trips more than just what the hunting could account for. It may be months before Porter Artistry has the rug done, but both of us recall with a warm feeling the trip we made to get it. As of this writing, Wyatt says no one has gotten the bellydragger bear, and he may figure in my future plans.
