New Salem Mennonite School Starts to Take Shape

Salem Mennonite School, located in the Franklin Church north and east of Leon, decided that the number of students had out-grown the church's space. So to meet the needs of students and staff, it was decided to build a new school which had been talked about for awhile. The new building is located east of the church just off of the LeonLineville Road. The building will have classrooms, kitchen and a gym.Local members of the community are providing the labor. Plans are to have the facility ready for the new year this fall or shortly thereafter.

Reynolds. “These investments will make a tremendous impact on our ability to prevent violence in schools while also taking steps to ensure schools and communities are in the best position possible to respond to an active event.” The funding also builds upon the foundation of the Governor’s School Safety Bureau to support all schools and law enforcement partners with prevention, training and response strategies. A portion of the funding will be utilized to implement technology and tools including proactive social media scanning software, an anonymous reporting tool, digital critical incident mapping and specialized training. “The Governor's School Safety Bureau will provide Iowa with an intentional focus on providing assistance

and tools to identify, report, and assess school-based threats, while still embracing local control,” said Iowa Department of Public Safety Commissioner Stephan Bayens. “It will facilitate training so that teachers, administrators, and first responders are equipped and empowered to keep our kids safe. The Bureau will work shoulder to shoulder with all involved for the common good of providing a safe place for our children to learn and grow.” “Mass shootings and other violent acts committed against innocent people are difficult to understand,” said Gov. Reynolds “But work must be done to answer the question why they happen and what can be done to prevent this type of behavior.” Prioritizing mental health services across Iowa has been a top priority for Governor Reynolds since taking office and has received strong bipartisan support. When Iowa’s FY23 budget goes into effect on July 1, 2022, total mental health-related funding will increase by nearly $3.5 million (continued on page 12)

Decatur County Hospital Provides Education for Families and Donates AED to Lamoni Public Library

Decatur County Hospital presents a defibrillator (AED) to the Lamoni Public Library. Pictured l-r: Tara Spidle, DCH CFO; Felicia Williams, Director, Lamoni Public Library; Mike Johnston, DCH CEO; Denise Elefson, DCH Board of Trustees Chair and Lamoni EMS Chair. Over the course of the last year, Decatur County Hospital (DCH) has been seeking Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the American College of Cardiology. Once completed this summer, DCH will be the ONLY Critical Access Hospital in Iowa, and only the 4th hospital of any kind in Iowa to receive this designation. Part of this certification process includes educating our community on recognizing the early signs of a heart attack, and providing resources to the community to help those who experience a cardiac event. This year, we’re donating 4 (four) automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to locations throughout Decatur County which are accessible to the community. While there are many AEDs placed throughout Decatur County, more AEDs that are accessible outside of business hours are needed to provide a safety net to the community. To celebrate the donation of our first AED, last week, DCH partnered with the Lamoni Public Library, Lamoni EMS, Lamoni Fire Department, Lamoni Police Department,

Decatur County Sheriff, and Decatur County Conservation Board to host a safety night to educate families about early heart attack warning signs, hands only CPR, and other safety tips. With over 60 (sixty) people in attendance, and 20 (twenty) employees and volunteers from partner organizations, the event was a great success. During the event, DCH staff provided handouts with information on symptoms that might indicate early warning signs of a heart attack. Some common heart attack symptoms that may start before a major attack include: chest discomfort, chest pressure, chest ache, chest burning, and chest fullness. In addition, there are some common symptoms that might not always seem related to the heart. These include: weakness, sweating, nausea, and dizziness. These mild symptoms may indicate the onset of a heart attack. They may come and go for hours or days before the chest pain becomes severe. Early symptoms are called prodromal and can be likened to

the prodromal symptoms of a cold. When treated early, prevention can take place to avert sudden death and cardiac damage. Early recognition and response saves lives. If you recognize any of these symptoms in someone, it is important to encourage them to seek treatment and diagnosis to confirm the cause. Seeking early treatment at the start of these symptoms is the best way to recognize a major cardiac event before it happens. In addition to education on early heart attack symptoms, Lamoni EMS provided education on hands-only CPR, which can help save a life if someone experiences an emergency. The Lamoni Fire Department, DCH Ambulance, Lamoni Police, and Decatur County Sheriff provided education on fire and law enforcement safety while allowing (continued on page 10)

adults, but I’m betting they did too. Saturday morning Optimist Club members Philinda Snethen, Lisa Stobbe, Karen Lozier, Liz Carpenter, Garnet Coulthard, and honorary Optimist member Jim Coulthard sorted cans and bottles. They are getting ready for the next load to Corydon. Haying season is in full swing weather permitting, so that is keeping Andrew Lane very busy cutting, raking, and baling hundreds of bales of hay. Carrie Richardson visited her dad, Ivan Lane, on Saturday afternoon. Cassie Daleske reports her boys Axel and Kipton Lane can’t seem to get enough of the pool at Leon. She says Axel really enjoys the water while Kip prefers to splash his feet. Give Kip a little more time and he’ll be right in there with his brother. Emilie and William Taylor and Tad Fundermann stopped by Liz Carpenter’s for a short visit on Sunday morning. Kim and Maurice Erwin are enjoying having grandson Cameron here for a summer visit. They traveled to Heritage Park in Forest City, Iowa, to see the tractor show. There they met up with Maurice’s parents and his uncle Bob and aunt Karen Jones from Norfolk, Nebraska. A highlight of the show was taking Maurice’s parent’s Hart Parr 1836 tractor to exhibit. Sunday Kay Herring, Lorne and Kathy Esse, as well as Amy McBirnie ate lunch with Philinda Snethen. Breanna Main celebrated a friend's wedding in Nebraska over the weekend. Clay Parkhurst has been busy working! Their dogs, Millie and Maisie, helped their doggy friend, Wren Rinehart, celebrate her 3rd birthday! Busy weekend for all of them! Saturday Dylan, Benson, and Holly Parkhurst went to Kansas City to eat dinner for Dylan and Holly’s anniversary. Little Baby Kyra stayed home and enjoyed cuddles with Grandma Traci. LINDA BOOTHE Happy Father’s Day to all my readers out there! I’m blessed to have raised two #1 fathers and my great grandkids are blessed to have wonderful fathers. I hope all my readers had a nice relaxing day with the ones that love you and you were treated like the kings you are. What’s the news for this week? HOT is one three lettered word we could use to describe this past week, for sure. Get used to it cause it’s here for a while. Sunscreen and shady places with lots of fluids are my advice. FUN is another three lettered word to describe getting together with your lifelong friends. Pam Kent, Sue Braman, Verla Cole and I all lied to Lou Fry for days. Lou’s birthday was Wednesday and she was concerned that we might not all get together for her special day. We had talked and texted each other with our plans to celebrate with her and when she asked if we had talked to anyone….we lied to her so she definitely was surprised with all of us getting together for lunch. The entire restaurant sang and clapped as we sang Happy Birthday to Lou. She was gifted with a cake, flowers and all of us together. Happy Birthday to our Dear Friend, Lou. And, I’d also like to mention that she is older than me….for a couple of months anyway. Lol I want to mention that I am still gathering names to add to my list for our South School Reunion. Hopefully, it will be in July at a location in Leon. Message me if you want to make sure you are on the list
