Freedom Isn't Free...Don't Waste It Flags snapping in the wind along the entrance to the Leon Cemetery served as a meaningful backdrop for the Memorial Day Service that was well attended last Monday as the VFW held their annual salute to their fallen comrades. R & S Auto and Small Engine Getting Door Swings R & S Auto and Small Engine, located in Leon at 19563 US69, could be the biggest kept secret for some, yet still seems to have many door swings. For those who may not have heard of this new business, they are located at the north end of the Gilbert True Value building. They are owned and operated by Rayden Boswell and Sam White, hence the R & S. Even though their business hours are 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, they understand the emergency for their services so

do work outside these hours by appointment in addition to providing a 24/7 on call. If you need to reach them, you can call Rayden at 641-414-9341 or Sam at 641-344-4497. R & S Auto and Small Engine officially opened up for business on July 12, 2021. They are a FULL SERVICE automotive, small engine and heavy machinery shop. When asked to share something about their business that most people would not know, the two said in unison, WE SELL TIRES! So folks, now you know, they sell

House

tires. Even though R & S is new to the community, the two owners are no strangers to the area, as both were born and raised locally. Sam is a Class of 2016 Central Decatur graduate and Rayden a Class of 2017. Even as younger entrepreneurs, the duo of Rayden and Sam provide higher education and several years of experience. A little more information about the owners is Sam's significant other is Vanessa Reed, also a Class of 2017 CD graduate and they

have a 6 month old daughter Vada. Rayden is engaged to Madison Johnson, a Class of 2017 CD graduate and they have a daughter due in September. Rayden still enjoys playing his guitar when he gets the chance and both Rayden and Sam enjoy hunting and fishing when not working or spending time with their families. As with the rest of the world right now, parts can be challenging to locate but they have different places for options, so this has not kept them from being able to provide their full service operations. They appreciate the many businesses locally such as Gilbert's True Value, Leon Napa, Carquest in Lamoni and O'Reilly Auto Parts in Osceola, as they make it a priority to always look local first. As an early celebration for their one year anniversary, they just sponsored this past weekend a live music event featuring country singer Jake McVey along with local artists Abbie Hullinger, Briggs Girls, Graham Girls and Durt. Word on the street is to keep your eyes and ears out for R & S to be sponsoring a Leon Chamber Coffee in the near future as well as an annual event celebration such as these live music events.

think about what this three-day Memorial Holiday is all about,” stated Remsburg. Freedom requires sacrifice and he asked the question, why do you think they (Veterans) all fought in those wars? “They gave up their tomorrows so I (we) could have our today with you,” stated Remsburg. “And so that you can enjoy the freedoms of camping, boating, and relaxing.” The Little River Chorus, under the direction of Bob Redman, sang the National Anthem. Members of Boy Scout Troop 102 laid a wreath on the memorial and Steven Neilssen played Taps. Color bearers and guards of Cowl Scott American Legion Post #80 who participated were: Steve Bettin, Bob Frey, Joe Short, Pat Gober, Jordan Durell, Fred Cox, Steve Willis, Manny Atwood, Dennis Martin, Bob Redman, and Mike Durell who served as Master of Ceremony.

Fulkerson for Board of Supervisor My name is Steve Fulkerson. I am running for Decatur County Board of Supervisors. My main objective as a supervisor is to bring in manufacturing companies and jobs to Decatur County. If we can bring jobs, we can support new housing projects and build the tax base instead of raising taxes. We have 4 exits off a major interstate highway that we need to take advantage of for easy access to our local businesses. As for me personally, I was raised on a farm in the Woodland area of Decatur County. I graduated from Mormon Trail Community School. I worked locally for a few years until deciding to start a business and head out on the road taking out abandoned railroads. I have owned 4 different businesses in Decatur County. I also worked for Decatur County Secondary Roads Department on the bridge crew, culvert crew Foreman and maintainer operator. I know the expenses involved in taking care of our roads and have been down every road in the county. If I have a complaint regarding the roads, I will know exactly where it is and what it is. As for bringing industry to the area, I have done it from New York to here, so I know how. On June 7th, I would appreciate your vote in the primaries. Let’s give the children of Decatur County great opportunities and a reason to stay. Paid for by Steve Fulkerson, 30086 State Hwy 2, Leon, Iowa 50144

LINDA BOOTHE Memorial Weekend….our unofficial start to Summer. My question is…Where did our Spring go? I think I missed it! Carol and Dave Proctor had some surprise visitors on Thursday. Their niece, Emily (Jennings) Naylor, of Bent, OR, stopped by on her two week adventure from Oregon to Vermont and back to Oregon . Emily graduated with her Law Degree in Vermont, accompanied by her mother, Rita (Toney) Jennings of Tulsa, OK. Emily’s trip down through Vermont to Washington, DC, was a 40 hour train trip back to Iowa. Just minutes after Emily’s arrival at the Proctor’s, their son, Dustin Proctor of Fremont, NE, surprised his parents with his presence. Emily and Dustin talked it up for some time and enjoyed their catching up time. Emily went on to Lamoni to spend a couple of days with her childhood friend, Shannon (Lawson) Vanderflute….we’ll just call it a slumber party but I sorta wish I’d been invited cause I bet they shared some quality fun time that we all might have enjoyed. Emily’s husband is Brian Naylor, formerly of Leon, and her father is Junior Jennings of Leon. My cousins, Feryl (Sly) and Ron Bouchard and Sheryl (Sly) Schmitt of Altoona and Larry and Toni Sly of DSM, came to Lamoni on Thursday to decorate the Sly family graves for Memorial Weekend. I met them at Rose Hill in Lamoni and we later went for lunch at a local

restaurant. We enjoyed our brief time together, just like we always do, before they made their way back home. Thursday was the day for get-togethers. Sisters, Brenda Osborn-Boles, Carla Evans of Lamoni, Marcia Houk of Princeton, MO, and Ramona Clark of Davis City, made the rounds decorating family monuments and then lunched together. These Gals are ‘Card Playing Fouls’ so they spent the rest of the day in a family competition of card playing. On Saturday, Carla Evans of Lamoni hosted the McDaniel family reunion in her home. The relatives and descendants of Freda Osborn were Rod and Brenda Boles, Carla Evans, McKayla and Jazzie Evans, Chenille, Tyler, Carson and Jace Morris and Levi Clark all of Lamoni, Ramona Clark and Amy Osborn of Davis City, Nadia and Leville of DSM, Carolyn Wilson, Charles McDaniel of Ankeny, Gerald and Barb McDaniel of Jewel, IS, Michael McDaniel of Norwalk and Katherine Havard of Osceola. The family enjoyed a banquet of home cooked food and a day of fellowship and games. I hope you all enjoyed your holiday weekend and always feel free to share your news with me….Later, Linda

Later still, little brother Cole arrived and they all enjoyed supper together. Wednesday, Liz Carpenter had fun on the students’ last day of school activities. A few more teacher work days and she is done for this school year. Liz Carpenter traveled to Osceola after school Thursday to visit the dentist. Not the best way to end the day. Paula Hutton stopped by Liz Carpenter’s for a quick visit on Thursday evening and picked up some eggs for Grandpa John who was down for a visit. He was hankering for some farm fresh eggs and Paula knew just who to call. The eggs were laid Thursday and gathered Thursday evening. Don’t get much fresher than that! MELINDA MACKEY The big news is that J20 is now open. The bridge work is complete! I know it was a long process, but we are finally done! I hope everyone had a nice weekend. The cemetery looked

nice this year and flags around town are a welcome sight. Kudos to everyone that worked to get them put up! I was reminded of Sand Creek over the weekend. And when you go out there it's definitely not an area that has a lot of homes. In these years, it's quiet and not many houses close to the creek being mostly farm ground or timber. But it wasn't always like that. Many families lived there; settling there when they came to Decatur County as well as Indian tribes. Here's one family that chose Sand Creek as their home. Henry F. was born four months after his father passed away and his mother lived only two years more. This left him and his older brother, William, orphans. The parental grandparents of Henry F. were Robert (18091865) and Martha Hatfield Warrick (18121903), who were among the first pioneers to settle around the Little Tennessee area in the northeast part of Richland Township, Decatur County, near Doyle Township in Clarke County. They arrived early spring, (continued on page 8)

The Leon Journal-Reporter, Wednesday, June 1, 2022

Rodger’s Recollections by Rodger Gatton On one of the rainy days last week, while scrolling through facebook posts, I came upon 50+ most excellent photos, showing groups of agricultural and industrial technology students, helping the local American Legion post. They were putting up the flags and placing the little crosses along the edges of the roads, in the Leon Cemetery. I know it was a big job for them, because I helped remove the crosses and pack them away last year. That was a big job, and lining up the crosses and hammering them into the ground had to be way more work than plucking them out. As of this writing, I have not driven out to see the results of their work, but I know it’s going to be beautiful, as it is every year. They must have picked just the right day for the job, because a couple other rainy days were certainly not fit to be outside working. By the time this story is printed, the Memorial Day service will be done. I sincerely hope the weather cooperates and the service can be held at the cemetery. While it was a nice service last year, in the school gym, it’s just not the same as being in the fresh air outdoors, right there on the grounds where numerous military veterans, their families and others are buried, hearing the 21-gun salute, and taps being played at the end. * * * * * * * * Two weeks ago, on one of the numerous gray and cool mornings we’d gotten so used to this spring, I met with my cousin, Keith Hammer, from Bettendorf, at WoJo’s Restaurant in Humeston. Our goal for the day was to visit as many graves as we could find, of our departed Boyce and Gatton family members. As soon as he finished his coffee, we set out for the Humeston Cemetery. I recalled the graves of our greatgreat-grandparents, on Grandma’s side, were very close to the extreme southwest corner of the Humeston Cemetery, and they were found just where I remembered them; Thomas and Elizabeth Boyce. After taking a photo or two of the very old headstones, we drove around and looked at the newer part of the cemetery and found the graves of Ralph and Dorothy Boyce. Ralph, son of Orville and Maude Boyce, was a first cousin to Keith’s mother and my dad. From Humeston, we traveled west to find Popcorn Road, then some miles north and west of Garden Grove, to the Matier Cemetery. Not far inside the gate are the graves of our great-grandparents, our Grandma’s mother and father, Thomas and Linda Boyce. There is a very unique marker there for Julia and Samuel Matier. It is in the shape of a tiny log cabin. The name of their son, J. B. Matier, who lived only to the age of 24, is also engraved on the marker. I had seen this special marker several times before, but only on this morning noticed what was carved on the end of one of the logs: Leon M. CO. I’m assuming

that stood for Leon Monument Company. Our next cemetery was in Leon. Keith had been to this one before, so we knew some of the graves we would find. Our great-grandfather, Levi Gatton is buried there, not far from our grandparents, Ralph and Mary, and their infant son, James, who would have been my dad’s older brother, had he lived. Very close by is the stone for Isaac and Matilda Gatton, our great-great-grandparents. Our grandfather’s mother and his father divorced when he was quite young, and his mother moved to California, so I assume she’s buried there. Levi married Jennie Ethel Wells, but her stone is found in another location in the cemetery. The two of them provided our grandfather with 13 half-brothers and sisters. Within sight of our great-grandma Ethel’s stone is one for her son, Lloyd Gatton. Elsewhere in the Leon Cemetery is the grave of Nathan Perdew, our Grandma’s maternal grandfather. Once upon a time, my sister, son Michael, and I used a very long bar to pry one side of that stone up, placed some gravel under the low side to straighten it. I’m happy to report, it’s still as straight as the day we worked on it. Beside the Perdew grave are the plots for Orville and Maude Boyce. Orville was our grandmother’s brother, so Nathan Perdew would have been his grandfather too. Not all family members stayed around Leon, but several of our grandfather’s siblings did, and are buried here. We found the graves for Nellie, who married George Johnson, and Wilma, who married Leo Baughman. Beside the Baughman graves is a bronze marker for George Gatton. Beside the Johnson graves is a smaller stone, marking the resting place of an infant son, Eugene. Just off the highway, on a curve south of Leon is one more cemetery I wanted Keith to see. Rumor has it, one of our ancestors is buried there, but we know not who, and it appears there is no stone. The cemetery is very small. It is fenced off from the farm ground around it, and someone has been mowing it. Most of the remaining stones are very very old, some are tilted, some have fallen over, one has been pushed up by the roots of a close tree. It’s been many years since the last burial there. On our way back to Humeston, we stopped at the portion of the Garden Grove Cemetery on the east side of the road. There I knew we would find the graves of the Charles and Pearl Boyce family. Charles was a first cousin to Keith’s mother and my father, the son of Orville and Maude Boyce, and brother to Ralph, whose graves we’d already visited. There is a rather long row of stones for Charles and Pearl’s family members, many of whom, for one reason or another, passed away before they had lived what would be considered a “normal” lifetime. Of their five children, Janet, Tom, Robert, and Gary are gone. All were young-

er than I. There are also two more, from the younger generations, who died much too soon. Nearby, are the graves of Jerry and Kathy (Boyce) Sullivan, who also had lifetimes a bit shorter than we would have liked. Cousin Kathy was the

daughter of Ralph and Dorothy Boyce. This has been a description of a personal journey, but I expect a good number of my older readers will still remember some of our relatives who have been mentioned.

Baby Formula Shortage Continues Being Addressed As reported by Holly Rash, Decatur County Public Health A d m i n i s t r a t o r. NOTE: Children sixto-nine months old can start to substitute with cow's milk or soy milk while parents look for more formula. Children nine months and older can switch over entirely to cow's milk if there's no allergy. REMEMBER, THIS IS ONLY DURING THE FORMULA SHORTAGE. Supply chain constraints have been affecting product availability since January. The formula recall issued in February and closure of the Abbott production facility in Michigan has exacerbated this issue. Given those constraints, Iowans are encouraged to purchase what they need for the short term. This will ensure that all Iowans are able to access what they need, given the limited supply going on nationwide. The FDA is responsible for taking

steps to ensure the safety of infant formula while also ensuring that supply can be met when these steps are taken. According to a press release from May 10 that FDA published, it highlights actions FDA is taking to address formula supply shortages including working with major infant formula manufacturers to increase supply and

MELINDA MACKEY (continued from page 5) 1851, when the father of Henry F. would have been eleven years old. Robert served in the Civil War during the years 1862-1863 but was then discharged because of chronic bronchitis. Henry F. and Samantha settled on a farm in the Sand Creek area northwest of Westerville. Henry succumbed from an old injury on September 28, 1894, leaving his wife widowed at 27 years of age and with four small children, the oldest child was only seven years old. Samantha raised all four to adulthood on the banks of Sand Creek near the North Rock Ford. Their children: Bertha m. Fred Black; Ellen M. David C. Brammer; William Robert m. Bertha May Foland; and Forrest Henry. Bertha married Fred Black (both deceased). They had six children: Harry deceased; Kathryn (Boulware) of Dixon, Missouri; Jim of Caldwell, Idaho; Edith deceased; William F. of Ceres, California; and Mary (Daniels) of Turlock, California. Ellen married David C. Brammer, and they spent several of their young married years in North Dakota. They returned to Sand Creek during the latter part of World War I. They had one child, Helen (Limbach), who lives in Raytown, Missouri. Ellen succumbed of a blood clot in 1945.An account of W. R. and May Warrick will be found elsewhere. Forrest Henry Warrick spent his youth and part of his adult life on Sand Creek. About 1918 he went to North Dakota where he entered the service. Around 1920 he and his mother returned back to her farm on Sand Creek. He left Decatur County about 1938 and finished out his life in and around Stockton, California. In 1969 he was buried in the Warrick cemetery, Section 2, Richland Township, beside his parents. NOTES: Samantha (Needham) Warrick died in 1951. Henry F. and Samantha (Needham) were interred at Warrock Cemetery, rural Decatur County, Iowa. Have a great week!

ternoon and Mary and I had just come back on to the track after taking a quick lunch break. As we approached the infield area, we immediately noticed a guy laying on his back with blood trickling out of the corner of his mouth and no one was around him. Mary and I chucked the cameras from around are necks and sprang into action. One, he was choking on his own blood and two, we observed the tell tale signs of someone having a seizure. As we knelt down beside the guy, a track official came over to us saying that he was watching him. Mary said, he is choking and that we need to get him on his side. Mary and I rolled him onto his side and he continued to seize. We stayed with him and I immediately asked the track official if he had noticed the time when he first saw him start to seize. Mary then started her own time, because knowing how long someone seizes is important to (continued on page 10)

"Decision Day" for Seniors

By Kimberly Elsberry, CD 7-12 Professional School Counselor May first is recognized as "Decision Day" for seniors across the country. Central Decatur seniors were working hard to finalize their plans after high school, and the month of May was an exciting time for them as they closed one chapter and started their new beginnings. Central Decatur celebrated seniors and their decisions during lunch on Wednesday, May 11th. A video created by senior Maddy

Leahy was shown on a loop throughout lunch periods for seniors and underclassmen to learn more about where the class of 2022 was headed after graduation. Seniors also had the opportunity to place their name on a map in the lunchroom (see picture above) to showcase their decisions as well as take photos with their fellow classmates. This was a great time for seniors to be recognized for their decisions and for underclassmen to be exposed to the various options after high

school. The class of 2022 had fifty-five seniors earning their high school diploma and one foreign exchange student. Of the fifty-six seniors, 25 are planning to attend a 4-year college after high school, 15 are planning to attend a 2-year college (with some planning to transfer afterwards to earn their bachelor's degree), 4 are furthering their education by earning a certificate or diploma, 1 is seeking an apprenticeship, and 11 are directly entering the workforce.

any more details about the gentleman or how things turned out. Mary and I wondered after the fact, what would have happened to him if she and I hadn't returned to the field when we did. We may have been doing more than what we just did. But in any case, we both were prepared to go to the next step if needed. While several came up to us afterward and thanked us for what we had done, what upset us the most is that no one else seemed to want to jump in and try to help before we did. I am very thankful for the young girl that did help. She told me afterwards that she was a lifeguard and was first aide certified and she was going into the medical profession. oOo If your child has ever been a part of the North Elementary Nine Eagles field trip at CD they know the huge disappointment of it being cancelled. Well, the amazing CD North Elementary staff were sure to do everything possible to make it up to the students. So what do teachers do, they think outside of the box and act quickly. If you haven’t heard, here is how the day went. North Elementary students made the best of the rainy weather last Wednesday with indoor options for Nine Eagles

Day. A retro lunch in "80's South Elementary" style meant that students ate together in the hallways. Students traveled in mixed grade groups to sidewalk chalk, feed the cat, first aid, sno-cones and plusplus blocks, board games, Texas washers, paper airplanes, letter crafts, dodgeball, archery, and beanbag bocce ball. The biggest challenge at the end of

the day is what was the 3rd-6th graders favorite station of the day! Rain or shine it’s believed memories were made by all. Way to go CD staff. oOo Tuesday marked 12 years without my partner in crime, dear old Dad, by my side. Gosh I miss him! Until the next time... So Long!

the doctor. Mary and I both knew this because of Mary's seizure disorder and I have witnessed these episodes first hand. The track official radioed for the EMTs and by then another young photographer came over to see if she could help us out as well. The EMTs arrived and he had stopped seizing and went into the dazed and confused mode that accompanies a seizure. He was a fellow photographer and we gathered up all his gear and followed him to the ambulance. We never did hear
