Storm Rips Through County On the evening of June 7, for the second time in three months, Decatur County was hit by severe hail, rain and tornadiclike winds. The path of wind and destruction was mainly in the north ern part of the county near and along Highway J-20. It was reported that a majority of the area received upwards of two inches of rain during the quick moving storm. One area farmer north of J-20 even reported hearing a freight train noise, indicative of a tornado, as he was taking shelter in his home. Lots of crops were damaged in a short period of time as the hail and wind pummeled them into the ground. In Leon, there were numerable reports of trees and branches down at the cemetery, in yards and across roadways. A large tree in the Todd Applegate yard on NW Church Street was heavily damaged as large limbs were strewn about. At the high school, a portion of the visiting team’s softball dugout was blown off.

Memories of Bob Hampton Bob was a great employee and above all a friend. He worked hard, drove hard; always pitched in to do whatever needed to be done. If another driver got two loads to Kansas City, Bob got three. If another driver got three loads to Des Moines, Bob tried for four. One day the highway patrol called. A driver had filed a complaint. A Smith Feeder Supply truck had been tale gating him too close. Questioning Bob he said the darned driver wouldn’t let him pass – going down the middle of the road, weaving back and forth looking down every corn row and patch of beans to check the weed problem. Bob was generous beyond measure. He mowed people’s yards in Decatur, made candy on Valentine’s Day, and made stuffed peppers and other treats to show off his cooking skills. Not long ago he said there isn’t a day goes by that I don’t wish to be over there helping you. My reply was there isn’t a day goes by that I don’t wish you were over here helping us. Bob we’ve been blessed to have you as our friend. Smith Family

ROBERT WAYNE HAMPTON Robert Wayne Hampton was born to Frank Boward and Maxcine Jane (Smith) Hampton on January 27,1942, at their rural Decatur County, Iowa home and passed from this life on June 3, 2022, at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Bob, as he was known, was 80 years old. Bob graduated from Morman Trail High School and shortly after married Diane Smith. To this union a daughter, Pauline Marie, was born. The cou-

ple later divorced. Bob was a business owner of meat cutting operations in both Nebraska and Wisconsin before being inducted into the United States Army and serving in Vietnam. Bob was honorably discharged with the rank of drill sergeant and received a Purple Heart. Bob returned to Iowa and married Nevelee (Norman) Pace. Together they raised her children, Duane and Shannon. They also raised their grandaughter, Angela, from a very young age. Bob hauled grain for Bob and Ruby Smith for several years, owned and operated his own semi, owned and operated a mobile wash truck, and was the manager of the Hilltop Station in Decatur, Iowa. He returned to drive a truck again for Bob and Ruby Smith until his retirement. He cared deeply for the Smith family. Bob served as Mayor of Decatur City and attempted to “Keep Decatur Beautiful”. He bought several loads of gravel for the streets and mowed yards for many. Bob was respected by all who knew him for his strong work ethic, always had a joke to tell, and was known as “MR.SOYBEAN” on the C.B. radio. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Nevelee in 2005; grandson, Eric Craig; and brothers, Frank Jr., Dennis, and Ralph Hampton. He is survived by daughter, Pauline Hampton of Brooklyn, Iowa; stepdaughter, Shannon Craig and husband, Ronnie of Davis City, Iowa; step-son, Duane Pace of Leon, Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; siblings, Guy Hampton of Leon, Iowa, Mary and Wayne Williams of Corydon, Iowa, Dorthy Rising of Safety Harbor, Florida, Stephen and Diane Hampton of Culbertson, Montana, Joyce Shackelford of Des Moines, Iowa, and John and Sandra Hampton of Camdenton, Missouri; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

MELINDA MACKEY The Quilts Of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a literal dream. Founder Cathrine Roberts' son was deployed in Iraq. And according to Catherine, the dream was as vivid as real life. She saw a young man sitting on the side of his bed in the middle of the night hunched over. The permeating feeling was one of utter despair. She could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then as if viewing a movie; she saw him in the next scene wrapped in a quilt. His whole demeanor changed from one of despair to one of hope and well being. And the idea to make quilts for Service Members and Veterans was born. The QOVF is a movement of over 10,000 volunteer members across 600 groups in all 50 states, represented by almost 700 volunteer leaders whose objective is to bring healing to Service Members and Veterans. Over 300,000 QOV awards have been reported throughout the US and overseas, and Wednesday at 7:00pm one of the quilts was presented to our very own Bob Hunt, long time Grand River Resident and Vietnam Veteran. In December of 1965 Bob was drafted into the United States Army. Induction took place at Fort Des Moines, then to Basic Training in Texas. Bob's Advanced Training was at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Then in September of 1966 Bob was deployed to Vietnam via Anchorage, Alaska and Japan. Landing at Cameron Bay, Bob was assigned the 119th Transportation Unit. The 119th Transportation Unit was a forward support outfit doing road building. In September of 1967 Bob left Vietnam from Saigon, and discharged at Fort Lewis, Washington with the ending rank: Specialist 4th Class E4. Anne Welker, of Murray; representing the QOVF and presenting the quilt also added, "Vietnam Veterans are brothers who fought without America's Support, and returned

Those brothers will always be the best America had". Bob continued in his civilian life as a cattle buyer and currently lives in Grand River. LIZ CARPENTER Well, I hope everyone was able to handle the two day heat wave this week. With all the moisture we have had, a couple of days of hot, hot weather should really get things growing. I had an update from Ina Lou Myrick, Teeny Gibson’s sister. A memorial service for Teeny will be held during the Tennery Family Reunion on Friday, July 8th at 3:00 PM in the pavilion in the El Reno, Oklahoma, cemetery. There will also be a memorial service in Lamoni at the Community of Christ Church probably on July 30th. Additional details will be shared as they are finalized. Clay Parkhust and Breanna Main had a full week of work. Breanna

did manage to do a little shopping in the city on Sunday. Then back to work on Monday! Kim Erwin is enjoying having her grandson Cameron here for a summer visit. They stopped by Liz Carpenter’s Sunday evening to drop off some cans for the Optimist Club and say hi to Liz. Cassie Daleske’s yellow and red lilies are blooming and so pretty. Her tomato plants have little teeny tiny tomatoes on them, and the boys have been living their best life camping with Chrissy Wiig! They have also been enjoying their new kiddie pool with a slide, too. That had to feel extra good during the twoday heat wave. Tuesday evening Sophie Ryan and her 5 year old granddaughter Abbi Taylor stopped by Liz Carpenter’s. Abbi spent the night and the next day with Liz. They had fun making mini pizzas for supper and pancakes for breakfast. They also enjoyed checking on the baby kitties in the barn and the baby chicks in the shed. Drew Parkhurst got a new brown and white paint filly. She is just a young one so he and the family will have fun working with her and training her for riding. Liz Carpenter and friend Linda Perkins made a quick trip to Des Moines on Friday. Took care of some business, enjoyed lunch, and did a little shopping. Grandma Traci came over to visit Kyra and Benson Parkhurst on Sunday morning. Holly, Dylan, Benson, and Kyra Parkhurst celebrated Holly's birthday Sunday evening at their house with Holly’s mom, Grandma Delila, and Cousin Daxon. They had supper and cake and ice cream. Holly’s age? It is a prime number less than thirty and greater than twentyfive. (It is the tenth prime number.) Happy Birthday, Holly! Saturday afternoon

Optimist Club member Liz Carpenter attended the goat show at the Lamoni Fairgrounds. Wednesday Kay Herring, Philinda Snethen, and Jim and Jeanine Bradley went to Blank Park Zoo. They saw all kinds of animals, then ate supper that night in celebration of Jim Bradley’s birthday. No report on Jim’s age. Happy Birthday, Jim! Sunday morning Optimist Club members Kay Herring and Philinda Snethen helped out at the concession stand for the Lamoni Youth Livestock Show at the Lamoni Fairgrounds. Sunday afternoon Optimist Club member Liz Carpenter helped out at the Lamoni Youth Livestock Show. Optimist Club member and fair board volunteer Alma Mickelson was also there. She was helping keep track of the different classes and making sure things were moving smoothly along. One day last week, Philinda Snethen went to Des Moines and met up with her granddaughter Victoria Jackson and her hubby DJ. They enjoyed visiting over lunch. Donna Ogier had a quiet week around her farm. Ivan Lane also enjoyed a quiet week around his farm.. Sunday evening Kim Erwin stopped by Liz Carpenter’s to donate some cans to the Optimist Club collection and say hi. Also Sunday evening, Andrew Lane and Cassie Daleske stopped by Liz Carpenter’s to drop off a trailer and visit. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and we apparently are not cheering loud enough because the Kansas City Royals are having a little trouble getting things going in the right direction this season. Fortunately the season is still pretty young and they do have some time to turn things around. So, keep cheering! Go Royals!

Moulton Elementary in DSM after 33 years. Tracey taught Head Start her first 9 years of teaching and then kindergarten for the remaining 24 years. She said that it just felt like summer vacation so far but I know she will stay very busy with the 3 grandchildren. She’s also is a good cook and baker and shares her wares with the neighbors. Tracey runs on her own daily and runs in marathons so I’m anxious to hear what consumes the remainder of her time. Tracey is married to my son, Chris Boothe, and is the daughter of Joyce Binning and the late Frank Binning. Best wishes Tracey and enjoy your new journey! Liz Beaty of Lamoni and I spent Wednesday morning together going to appointments. And… Wednesday, June 8th was Liz’s 90th birthday! On the way to Leon, I asked her how it felt to be 90 because I probably would never know. Her answer was, “Well, actually, it just feels like yesterday” and she giggled her cute giggle. Liz’s great granddaughter, Randi Beaty, stopped by in the afternoon to visit with birthday wishes on her way from Colorado back to her home in Truro. Randi got the real present cause Grandma Liz sent her home with her famous pumpkin bars and I know they are good cause Liz shares…. Happy Birthday, Liz! Lewis and Evelyn Hamilton of Davis City hosted a party on Sunday, June 12th. Sunday was Lewis Hamilton’s 97th birthday and, BOY!, did he ever have a great birthday surprise! Forty relatives and friends came with food and good wishes to help him celebrate. Evelyn had the

deck decorated with balloons and a Happy Birthday banner. Those attending were Lewis’ son, Richard and Ramona Hamilton and their son, Tim and Delcena Hamilton and family all of Bethany, MO, Evelyn’s son, Russ and Lisa Waltz and their son of DSM. Misty Polka and friend Dustin of Texas, Jessie and Heather Waltz of Florida. Peggy Hamilton, Tanya and Jeff Norris and family all of Ridgeway, MO, David, Brandon, Logan and Dustin Hamilton and Emma Craig and friend and Michael and Kelly O’Neil all of Bethany, MO. Louise O’Neil of Cainsville, MO. Becky Waltz and family and Dennis and Cindy Kiefer all of DSM, Angie McDowell of Peru, IA, and Chiane McKinney of St Charles, IA, and Aaron, Renae, Shira and friend of Davis City. Cake and homemade ice cream were enjoyed by the family. Lewis received a bird feeder and a bird house to watch from the window. Happy, Happy Birthday, Lewis! After some 30 + years, I was asked to sit on the election board June 7th. Of course, there was a training required and I, for sure, needed it. With the precincts being changed, we had a larger number of voters than usual. The 14 1/2 hour day went by pretty quickly and our counts all came out on point at the end of the day. Shirley Hill, Theresa Parker and I were on the board and we enjoyed some fun time in between voters. It was a good day, lots of voters came out to express their choice for our state and I will, for sure, do it again. Friday the 10th, (continued on page 9)

This week as we recognize Men’s Health Awareness Week, we’re shedding light on clinic services that can help you on your health journey. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in the United States. When paired with obesity and high cholesterol, men can develop heart disease. Our cardiologist, Joel From, MD, cares for those living with heart disease, and other conditions that carry the risk for developing heart disease. Men are also at risk for various types of cancer. Cancer is a tough journey, but we are here to help you every step of the way. Our oncologist, Zeeshan Jawa, MD, and Kalee Gerdes, PA, are both on site at DCH 3 times each month to help you battle your cancer. In addition to their guidance, our cancer treatment team includes specialized infusion nurses, a pharmacist, expert lab staff, and others to support you as you go through treatment. Diabetes is another condition that is common in men, and a disease that takes con-

sistent monitoring and care. Haytham Kawji, MD, is a board-certified endocrinologist who can help you manage your diabetes. In addition to Dr. Kawji’s guidance, our partner Linda Klejch, Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetic Educator, can help you learn how to make healthy choices throughout your day to ensure you are properly managing your diabetes. Dr. Kawji and Linda can also help you get access to specialized monitors and other tools to track your blood sugar and its effect on your daily life. Caring for your urological system is important to your overall health. Each month, Dr. Gallagher visits the DCH Outpatient Clinic from the Urology Center of Iowa to provide compassionate, high-quality urological care including diagnosis, treatment, and outpatient surgical procedures. Dr. Gallagher focuses on conditions related to the urinary tract (including kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and adrenal glands); and the male reproductive system (including penis, prostate and testicles). Although the FFA Officer Team did not know Loren personally, they quickly learned that Loren loved agriculture, where he completed all types of farm work, and that he also loved watching his girls play sports, family vacations, and trips to the Iowa State Fair. Armed with this knowledge, the Central Trail FFA Officer team discussed many ways to pay tribute to Mr. Parkhurst, and ultimately decided to share the story of agriculture through books in memory of his name. With the help of Machelle Clark and Sara Linhart, the FFA Officer Team was able to purchase several agriculturethemed books for the Central Decatur North Elementary and South Elementary.

Melvin Warren recently found something interesting in his pasture. It wasn't a downed UFO, but if this "thing" was seen in the air, one might consider the possibility. What Melvin found was a weather balloon. What makes this even more interesting is that this is the second time he has found such a thing in his life. He said he was 12 or 13 years old when he found the first one and there was a note attached to send it to Omaha. This time there were no instructions to do so. The instrument was zip-tied inside a styrofoam container. What are the odds? Neat story to say the least. Thanks Melvin for sharing. oOo Well we were wondering where the typical summer weather was at. Look no further. It is here. We were blessed or cursed Monday morning when we

Rodger’s Recollections by Rodger Gatton Well, I got my wish, that the Memorial Day service could be held at the cemetery, rather than in the gym. The weather was just about perfect, if you disregarded the 50-mph wind. No flags were blown down, of which I’m aware, but one of the speakers for the sound system took a tumble during the service, and had to be righted. Corey described Matt Remsburg’s message in his front-page story; I’d like to add that it was probably one of the best Memorial Day messages I can recall. I especially liked his personal example of his playing “Soldiers” in the backyard with his grandfather when he was a kid, and the advice given to him by his grandfather at that time, being repeated in a message to him at the time of his grandfather’s death. I’m sorry I didn’t get out to the cemetery to help put away the little crosses this year. Last year I looked at each and every one and read the name, as I laid them carefully in the totes for storage. This year, I went out on Monday night and walked beside each of the rows of crosses lining the roadsides, but first I looked at the ones in the cluster, near where the ceremony was held. I discovered they were crosses honoring the very oldest veterans. There I found one with the name of Capt. J. D. Brown, a Civil War veteran, in whose house I used to live. Also found one for John Woodmansee. I didn’t really have a connection with him, unless you count the items I bought from one of the Woodmansee country school auctions, when I was in high school. Each year, I look to see where the crosses for those veterans in my own family have been placed. I find the ones for Roger Gatton, my father, Richard Morine, my uncle, my dad’s uncle, George Gatton, and Paul Whitfield, my brother-in-law’s father. Then there was a cross for Darrell Johnston, who was almost like another uncle to me, since his brother Chester really was my uncle. I have memories of Darrell once selling me an Amana furnace, of a new and unique design. He told me he’d order it, but I had to install it myself, which I did, and that I’d be responsible for repairs, because they did not sell them, nor service them. As I walked along, looking at each name, I had a certain memo-

ry for nearly everyone I recognized. These memories are expressed in the order in which I came upon their crosses. My memory of Doyle Pyle is when he came to my apartment house, and how heavy was the sewer auger when he had to lug it back up the stairway from the basement. I later ended up owning that man-killer when Johnston and Bennett bought a new one, and sold me that heavy rascal. Elmo Barnum fitted me for several pairs of glasses, from sixth grade into my college years. I did not realize he was a veteran until I read his obituary and saw that he had served in the U. S. Navy. Over the years, I worked with several men whose names are on the crosses - M. E. “Bunk” Roland, Lewis Bunch, Guy Hess, and Maurice Redman. A number of post office employees, spanning a period of many years, were veterans – Garth Mitchell, Warren “Pete” Hanthorn, Roy Bailie, John Moore, and Ted Hinds. I also worked for Ted and Florence Hinds in later years, restoring apartments at Parkview. Gerald “Ham” Graves ran the Western Auto Store and later became my neighbor when I bought the old Frost Nursing Home. A neighbor in the other direction was Kenneth “Mike” Bigley. Wayne Fuller sold us our first (Philco) TV, from a showroom in his home, on a curve south of Leon, in about 1953. Joe Dobson, father of one of my classmates and Coast-to-Coast sales clerk, was the softest-spoken man I ever knew. Carroll “Brownie” Brown, Hy-Vee meat man, was Joe’s opposite. You never missed hearing what he had to say. Charlie Pyfer gave me a job when I really needed one in 1975, because I had spent my entire fortune trying to live in Florida. Truman Hamilton sold me the first jukebox I ever owned, and I got it working all by myself. Morris Albaugh, his brother and his father, serviced our cars at the Phillips 66 station. Ron Mills cut my hair, many times. Don Newkirk worked at the bank, but I knew him better as a collector of radios, because we shared that interest. Clyde Taff became my Physics teacher when he replaced C. K. Porter, who passed away in the middle of the year. That was very close to the time when Burbank Halstead also passed, so it was kind

of a double tragedy in my next-to-last year of high school. Clyde was also my chemistry teacher the following year. Vaughan Smyth took a lot of our school pictures, and I especially remember him when I was on the annual staff my senior year. He always seemed to know just how a picture was going to turn out. Doc Savely was a neighbor and my classmate’s grandfather, and he had a very pretty white dog that looked like he should be pulling a sled. Another neighbor was Dick Poole, who was going to cut off my ears if I didn’t quit teasing his son, Jim, and I believed him. Dale Ingram was water commissioner and spent a lot of time down in muddy holes, repairing water mains. Wayne Owens and Richard Bryant both grew up across the street from my parents. I took piano lessons from Helen Maughan, whose husband Clyde Maughan was an osteopathic physician, but had suffered strokes and was at home during the time I took lessons. On the way to the Maughan house, I’d pass the house of Richard Wooderson, father of a classmate, who always kept his house nicely painted. Other veterans whose names I saw were Avery West, whose Model A I once owned, and Offie Leeper, whose Model A Don Christensen still owns. Also saw names of Raymond “Lefty” Vanderpool, our night Marshal, Thomas Viner, who set my broken leg, and another time saved my life. Finally, Charles

“Lee” Elson, who took care of Hanoco business, Jim Durell, my dad’s second cousin, and Gary Lindsey, my sister’s classmate and all-around good guy. We tend to forget some people who’ve been part of our lives, until we hear or see something that reminds us. That can happen in the Leon Cemetery.

TWICE TOLD TALES (continued from page 4) Conwell, of Grand River, left for Cedar Falls where they attended the summer session at Iowa State Teachers College. The Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Sesulka of Hubbard, Texas and Earnest Barton of Mount Calm, Texas, were overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Rydel and children of Humeston. The Rev. Sesulka and Mr. Barton had attended Presbytery at Grand Rapids, Mich. Mr. Barton was an uncle of Mr. Rydel. Lillian Rydel accompanied them to Texas for a visit of a few weeks. Karen Crees, little five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Crees, had the misfortune to step on a broken fruit jar and cut her foot so badly it took six clamps to close the wound. She lost so much blood, she was very weak. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cornett, Donna and Pat motored to Worth, Mo. to view the scene of the cyclone. 100 YEARS AGO (June 15, 1922) Walked Out of Upstairs Room While Asleep – Junior Graham, a young man

about 21 years of age, living near Davis City, met with a peculiar accident at the home of Roy Hullinger, where he was working. He was sleeping in an upstairs room and while walking in his sleep, walked right out of an open door and fell to the ground, a distance of ten or twelve feet. He suffered a severe fracture of his right arm. Garden Grove Twister – There was a regular little cyclone in Garden Grove, which did a lot of damage, partially demolishing four houses. The storm seemed to go straight from the west and the damage was confined to a small strip south of the railroad tracks. The houses struck were Henry Youngs, Everett Reynolds, J.T. Fisher, and William Russell. Just east of this the homes of Mrs. Maggie Bates and Thomas Webster and a church were damaged by the storm. Marriage Licenses – James Henry Marsengill and Ellen Lenora Owens; Carl A. Cross and Meryle McDowell; Thomas E. Shiel and Marea Grogan; L.E. Vanlandingham and Helen R. Lovett; W.F. Phipps and Edith McLaughlin; W.C.

Decoration exercises in Pleasanton. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Wagner and Mr. and Mrs. Cooper Scott drove to Des Moines to visit relatives. Louie Pickering, who was employed with the wholesale grocery house of Kellogg & Birge, at Keokuk, was down for a few days vis-

(contributed photo) A large two-story abandoned home was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. At approximately 3:45 a.m., the Leon Fire Department was called to 307 South Main Street in Leon for a house fire. When the firemen arrived, it was determined the main level was completely engulfed in fire and the fire was quickly spreading to the upper portion of the structure and out of the roof. The Lamoni and Garden Grove Fire Departments were also called for assistance. The blaze was battled for over three hours. It was reported that the structure was to be razed. There was no electric or gas service to the structure at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire was undetermined. The Leon Fire Department was called back to the scene a few times during the day Sunday to extinguish hot spots.
