Bailie Schuldt Competes at Vegas Even though it only takes one time to qualify in breakaway for "The Rope for the Crown" held in Las Vegas, Bailie Schuldt won three major championships before deciding to accept to compete. At "The Rope for the Crown," held on December 4, Bailie finished with a 7th place overall out of 75 of the best of the best ladies. Bailie received her first qualification by winning the IRA (Interstate Rodeo Association) but she turned it down. Then she earned a second qualification by winning the IRCA (

Iowa Rodeo Cowboy Association) yet again turning it down. After winning her third qualification through the URA (United Rodeo Association), Bailie decided this was a sign and told her family "I was meant to be out there so I accepted my spot." The adventure began with Bailie taking her two horses to Las Vegas, Minnie and Cat. A true champion knows to go with your gut. Her game plan was to ride Minnie as this was who she had practiced and prepared for Vegas with but at the last second after grand

entry, her gut was telling her to get on Cat. Bailie ran back to the trailer, saddled Cat and rode her. "I think my gut was right cause we did well," stated Schuldt. In the first round, Bailie was able to score a 2.89. The second round time was a 4.1, on a fast calf. The third round Bailie delivered a 2.96 and with the short go, a 2.56. "I roped against the best of the best going down the road," added Schuldt. "I was proud to be able to hang with them. Vegas, what an experience it was to be in Las Vegas and be competing.

ARLO VICTOR HULLINGER Arlo Victor Hullinger, age 100, of Leon, Iowa, the third son of Earl Victor and Cecil Clare (Hamilton) Hullinger, was born August 29, 1921, at his parents’ home in rural Decatur County, Iowa near Boothtown. He died peacefully on December 29, 2021, at Southern Hills Specialty Care Center in Osceola, Iowa. Arlo grew up in Decatur County on his parents’ farm. He attended Hardscrabble Country School and then Leon High School, graduating in 1939. He attended Iowa State University for two years. With World War II approaching, he left college to help his father on the farm. On December 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Sage. They made their home on a farm in Decatur County and were blessed with five children, Larry Ray, Linda Sue, Donald Dean, Lila Kay, and Cindy Jo. Arlo was a farmer; he started with teams of horses and ended using tractors. Arlo loved God, his family, Iowa State Cyclones, Chicago Cubs, rodeos, and politics. He was a Democrat through and through. In 1965 Arlo ran for a seat in the Iowa House of Representatives and won, he served until 1981. While in office Arlo and Betty moved into Leon. From 1987 until 1991 he served in the Iowa State Agriculture Department as Chief of Dairy Trade Practices under Dale Cochran. After a battle with cancer, Betty passed away in 1988. Arlo retired in 1991. He taught himself how to play the guitar and enjoyed playing at music jams where he met his second love, Madra Bettis. They enjoyed

music jams, traveling in their RV, and wintering in Arizona. Arlo was an active member in the legislature. He could recall having to write his own bills in the beginning. He was instrumental in making Little River Lake and Watershed a reality so his constituents could have safe drinkable water and relieve the flooding downstream. He was known as a peacemaker. He said he got along with everyone including Chuck Grassley. Arlo was able to stay in his own home until the last six months. His daughter, Lila and son-in-law, Mike moved in with him the last six years to care for him. Lila can fondly remember the adventures they went on. He always introduced her as his daughter, his driver, and his nurse. Arlo was an active member of the church. He accepted Jesus at an early age and was baptized in Little River just west of New Salem Church. He was a member of Bethel Baptist, Bethel First Baptist, and last at Calvary Baptist Church. Undoubtedly, many people remember his singing and teachings. Arlo’s big goal the last few years was to make it to 100, which he accomplished this year in August. Preceding him in death were his parents; parents-in-law; wives, Betty and Madra; and son, Larry. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Jackson of Kellerton, announced the engagement of their daughter, June Ann, to Robert Boles, son of Ermal Boles of Grand River. Both were students at Iowa State. Leonard Martin of Leon attended the third annual Iowa FFA Holiday Conference in Ames. Emphasis at the conference was on agriculture in the private enterprise economy. 75 YEARS AGO (January 2, 1947) Kathryn Metz spoke Here – Kathryn Metz, editor of the Lamoni Chronicle, was guest speaker at the dinner meeting of the Leon Business and Professional Women's club. Betty Taylor, pianist, of Leon, furnished the music. Idavee Crouse, publicity chairman, was in charge of the program. Julia Maynard, secretary of the organization, was the dinner hostess and in charge of the decorations. "Ink on My Fingers" was the subject of the talk chosen by the Lamoni editor. Sub-Zero Weather Heralds New Year – Sub-zero temperatures marked the closing days of 1946 throughout Iowa with a low of -4 degrees registered in Leon. Proceeding the drop in temperatures was a sleet storm in Decatur County, making driving on all highways dangerous. Children brought out their new Christmas presents of new skates and sleds to enjoy ice skating and sledding, Winter laid deep on the white covered hills and hollows for Old Father Time when he rang the bell at midnight for the start of the new year. Franklin DomesticKates Largest of 13 4-H Girls' Clubs in the County - Twenty-seven girls were members of the new club which was one of the many indications that 4-H club work in Decatur County had grown amazingly fast. Our first big snow has happened and thankfully it wasn't all that horrible. The cold on the other hand was enough. The wind made being outside pretty much miserable. My dog loves the cold so much more than the heat and even she was ready to come back inside after 15 minutes. All of my plans for New Year’s Eve changed pretty quickly. I did have lunch with Maisy in Osceola on Friday, I was supposed to pick up Oliver and keep him for the night, but the flu hit Savannah's house and they all fell like dominoes. I stayed in the house as much as I possibly could. I finished two books and started another and a baby blanket. I made sure the couch didn't go anywhere that's for sure. Here is a little history told in 1910; J.N. MACHLAN Tells How it was Done in the Pioneer Days of Decatur County, from a farm near the present site of the county bridge, on Little River, west from the Fairview School House. (A picture with the article was taken just east of Westerville)The snowfall during some of the winters was very heavy. I believe it was in the winter of l866, we arose one morning and discovered that the snow had drifted to the eaves of the little cabin, our fences were all snowed under and our stock scattered hither and thither and our enclosures for stock were all under snow. After the snow fell, the weather turned colder and the snow froze hard. We could drive in any direction across the prairie over high fences. We had just put out a washing before the snow and it was six weeks before we were enabled to find it all. Heavy snows were common but this one was the heaviest I ever saw. Our cabin was covered with clapboards, as was the custom in those days, and the snow would blow between them and sift down through the loft into our faces as we lay in bed during a snow storm. The last thing the good mother would do before retiring was to see if the five children were in bed covered up head and all so the snow would not lodge in our faces.

LIZ CARPENTER Happy New Year to Everyone and Hello 2022! We are all hoping you will be better than the last two years. Alma and Ronnie Mickelson had a great holiday break with gatherings with all their children and grandchildren and births of new calves and kids in their herds. They are looking forward to the new adventures of 2022. New farm babies are a great way to start the new year! Donna Ogier is happy to have a full propane tank so they are ready for cold weather. She made a supply run Thursday to Bethany to get ready for whatever weather happened. Donna is not a cold or snowy weather fan but she is an optimist and knows one good thing about cold and snowy weather is baking. She bakes a lot more to keep her freezer full of casseroles and treats. Happy New Year from Donna! Ivan Lane and his dog Trouble had a quiet week around the farm. Optimist Club members Liz Carpenter and Julie McElroy, with help from Jim Coulthard, took a trailer load of cans and bottles to the redemption center in Indianola on Wednesday. Holly, Dylan, and Benson Parkhurst went to papa Larry’s Sunday to celebrate the Ragan family Christmas. Not much going on at Cassie Daleske’s and Andrew Lane’s last week. They are thankful we didn't get snow up to our necks. Probably lots of folks around the area are thankful for

the same thing. Drew Parkhurst had a quiet week around his place. Liz Carpenter enjoyed spending Thursday in Des Moines with her friend Linda Perkins. They took care of a couple of appointments for Liz and then enjoyed a birthday dinner for Liz at Texas Roadhouse. Liz’s age is two times the eleventh prime number. Happy Birthday! Kim and Maurice Erwin’s grandson Cameron spent some of his Christmas break last week visiting with them. The snowy and cold weather kept the folks in the neighborhood close to home for New Year’s Eve. Probably a good thing as the snow and cold made travel a little on the dangerous side. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and Happy Happy New Year! Let’s make it a good one!

LINDA BOOTHE This week we all lived the last days of 2021. It’s gone and we start anew with 2022. I reflected a lot this past week on all that has happened in the past year in our world. Covid continues to take its toll. Vaccines are available everywhere to those that wish to get it. Yet, our friends and loved ones are still getting sick and suffer long term health conditions, or worse, we lose them to the disease. The White House is assaulted resulting in 5 deaths and prompted the evacuation of lawmakers. Wildfires ignite throughout the US and destroy homes and take lives. fected our temperatures. We have constant floods, tornados and the shootings continue in our schools, malls, theaters, churches and in the streets. The racism continues and police violence is questioned. Saturday’s snow came fast and heavy and deep. It forced me into hibernation and plenty of time to ponder. I am so grateful for my life in Decatur County, Iowa, USA! If you are a friend, a family member, a past co-worker, a sports fan that sits in the bleachers with me, someone I have coffee with, a person that calls to check on my well being, someone I meet on the street, a neighbor… just know you are the reason I am so grateful. With 2022, let us all spread the love, the compassion, and kind-

Help us celebrate Iowa's 175th anniversary of statehood by joining us today, January 5th at the library from 4-5:30PM when we will be showing 'Iowa Early History: Glaciers to Settlement,' a 75 minute video. This video was sent to us through the Rural Legacy Project whose goal is to instill pride in the Heritage of Iowa. The video covers Iowa's beginnings as unsettled prairie into well planned farmsteads and schools. For more information on this video, visit iowaruralschoolsmuseum.net Looking for a meaningful way to give

back to the community as we approach this new year? Consider "adopting" a children's series off of the Giving Tree, located in our children's department through the first week in January. We have several popular series like 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid,' 'Bad Guys,' and 'Dog Man' that we would love to see "adopted" by a member of the community. This would mean that each time a new book is published in the series, the adopter would pay for the book (we have deeply discounted books through our vendor), on behalf of the library, and they would have first dibs on reading it. In addition, a plaque is placed inside the book, noting the generosity of the adopter. Although it varies from series to series, an adopter could expect to spend between $10$15 dollars, anywhere from 1-3 times per year. More specific projections are listed on the Giving Tree. The Iowa Motion Picture Association is looking for films created by Iowans to be entered in the 31st Annual Awards, "The Iowa Emmys." Everyone with an Iowa connection is eligible to enter a project through the website www.IMPA.tv/awards. html" The entry deadline is March 8, 2022. New to our adult large print collection this week, the fiction books: 'My Kind of People' by Lisa Duffy, 'I Couldn't Love You More' by Esther Freud, and 'Anne of Manhattan' by Brina Starler. New large print westerns include: 'Flintlock' by Jason Manning and 'The Devil You Know,' (Book 2 of the Stoneface Finnegan series) Keep your eyes peeled for Microbit programming activities beginning in January. Middle school aged children and above are welcome to join us as we will develop programming skills through hands on STEM materials. Little Tots Storytime is on Thursdays at 11AM. Join us with your babies and tots for songs, books, fingerplays, and fun! The library board of trustees now has a full slate of member. Cribbage card parties are every Tuesday at 10:30. All experience levels (or none at all!) are welcome.

What a way to usher in the New Year... a snow storm. Ha! It came as predicted, but atmospheric conditions kept the totals on the lower end of the scale. I believe we ended up with around 6 inches of the white stuff. However, this snow wasn't conducive to making snowmen. oOo The snowstorm did allow for Tonya to spend an extra day with her sister, Theresa,

Dr. Close to Provide ENT Services at DCH Outpatient Clinic Starting January 25th, the DCH Outpatient Clinic welcomes Dr. Heidi Close, ENT Provider, to our monthly clinic rotation. Dr. Close will visit on the 4th Tuesday of every month to help patients with issues that affect the ears, nose, and throat. Dr. Close’s appointment scheduling, billing, and follow up will all be managed by our DCH Outpatient Clinic staff. This is a change from how our pervious ENT provider operated. Chad Elliott and Redemptions to Perform at Lamoni Listening Room The Lamoni Listening Room returns with a live show by Iowa singer/songwriter Chad Elliott and the Redemptions on Jan. 15, 2022 at 7 p.m. “I’ve been looking forward to playing this series again. I am especially excited to bring my band to play with me. They add so much to the songs I write and when we play live, we improvise a lot. It will be so much fun,” Elliott said. The show will be held at Living Art Studios, 133 E. Main St., Lamoni, IA. Special guest Rick Burke will open the event with a short set at 7:00 p.m. and then Elliott will take the stage with his band, The Redemptions, at 7:30 p.m. “Rick will set the stage for the evening. His laid-back style and

respect for the craft of songwriting makes him the perfect opener for this type of concert,” Elliott said. The show will be a listening-room style event, like venues such as The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. The public is invited to attend and can expect stories, laughs and live music in a relaxed atmosphere. “I still plan on telling stories about the songs. It is the main reason we began the series, to showcase the art of songwriting in a listening environment. There is the added bonus of having my friends along. They bring so much joy to the music,” Elliott said. No ticket is required for the event. Drinks such as soda, water and coffee will be for sale at the event. Elliott’s music blends folk roots,
