Although Infinity Health’s Leon location is on target to reopen in March, the team continues to strive to provide high-quality services to the community through innovative

methods. “We are pleased to announce we will open a small medical clinic in the north parking lot of our Leon office on Wednesday, January 19th,” Samantha Cannon, Infinity Health Chief Executive Officer, stated. “The small medical clinic is a temporary solution while we continue to manage the building repairs and restore the building.” Infinity Health’s outpatient pharmacy will continue to of-

Decatur County Healthcare Courtesy Van Celebrates Two Year Anniversary On January 15, 2022, Decatur County Hospital, Decatur County Public Health, and Infinity Health celebrated the two year anniversary of the Decatur County Health Care Courtesy Van Service, which provides free rides to health care services throughout Decatur County. In late 2019, partners from the three health care entities in Decatur County gathered together to try and solve a major issue in our rural community. Through the Community Health Needs Assessment, the

partners learned that transportation to and from health care services was a barrier for residents in our communities. Based on the data, the three entities worked together to find a way to solve that issue. After discussing possible solutions, the Decatur County Health Care Courtesy Van was born. An initial investment of $99,500 was shared by the three entities to purchase a vehicle, hire a driver, and cover operating costs for the first year. In the second year of opera-

tion, the three partners have shared in ~$55,000 in costs to cover the driver’s salary, gas, maintenance, and other operating costs. The impact of this $154,500 investment has been very significant. Since its start in January of 2020, the Courtesy Van has provided over 4,500 rides to over 275 passengers from 9 communities in Decatur County. Traveling over 65,000 miles, the van has made access to health care in Decatur County (continued on page 8)

Snow Piles Were Bigger this Time Around

A large, stately Victorian home, that once overlooked the Weldon River bottom along the Lineville Road south and east of Leon, was completely destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon. At approximately 3:30 p.m. the Leon and Lamoni Fire Departments were dispatched to the Gary and Karin Brown residence, at 28249 Lineville Road, for a house that was fully engulfed with fire. When the Leon department arrived on scene it was soon learned that the fire was in the upper story of the home. “The upper story of the west side of the home was engulfed in flames,” stated Leon Chief Doug Moffett. Due to the large structure, and the need for more man power, a mutual aid call was answered by the Allerton, Lineville, and Mercer Missouri fire departments. For the next nearly three hours, the five departments battled the tough blaze. According to Chief Moffett, over 20,000 gallons of water was used. Due to the location, the nearest place for the tanker trucks to fill up with water was in Lineville. Several trips were made by the departments to refill their water tankers. No injuries were

reported and the home was a total loss. No estimate was given and the cause of the fire was undetermined.

TWICE TOLD TALES 20 YEARS AGO (January 16, 2002) It was no longer legal for anyone to arbitrarily dump garbage in the City of Leon garbage packer or containers in the community without authorization by the City of Leon unless you own that particular dumpster or garbage container. For many years, people had been placing garbage in and around the packer located on the City of Leon maintenance lot. The dumping had been mainly occurring on the weekends. Citations would now be issued to any violators of this ordinance. The City officials stated that you must be a resident and pay fees to put garbage out for collection. A horse drawn buggy driven by Noah Gingrich, 22, of Davis City was struck from behind by a pick-up truck driven by Oliver Manchester, 70, of Davis City. Gingrich and three passengers in the buggy: Jospehy Gingrich, 17, Enis Gingrich, 15, and Eli Yoder, 22, all of Davis City were injured and taken the Decatur County Hospital. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin had his aide Bob Soukup at the Leon City Hall, as part of his statewide effort to discuss the need for a new farm bill to bolster the rural economy for farm families and rural communities. Farmers who bought and applied restricted use pesticides must be certified. A private pesticide applicators training session was to be held at the 4-H Building at the fairgrounds in Leon. Grace and Clarence "Sam" Eckerman, who were former residents of Leon, were in town visiting. "Sam" was a jeweler in Leon and an expert watch maker. He also had a special hobby of building boats

MELINDA MACKEY Much appreciation to Craig Stogdill for working most of the day to clear the roads in town-we definitely had enough to push! I hope everyone found their cars. I had Oliver most of the weekend, so staying in was pretty great! I found the following article about the telephone lines switching over from the switchboard to dial phones. The article doesn't have a date, but I think it would be somewhere around 79 or 80. GRAND RIVER TO HANG UP ITS PHONES WITHOUT DIALS by "The Iowa Boy" Chuck Offenburger Before long, it's going to be much tougher spreading the word about garage sales, church suppers and early dismissals of school around the southern Iowa community of Grand River. News of births and deaths won't flash across the town as quickly as it does now. The local radio station is dying? Well, in a way, yes. The Grand River Telephone Co. – the last in the state (and one of only two in the nation) still using phones without dials – is going out of business. That means home-town operators will no longer be sitting before the switchboard in the small farm house that has served as the company's office. There'll be no one there to take and give messages, to ring around town when someone's away from home and has an important call, to listen to a late-night, longwinded and pointless story when someone's had a drink too many and is lonely. The conversion to the dial system is expected to take place in the next year or so. Grand River phone subscribers, who are paying about $6 a month for basic service now, authorized the switch in an election last February. The new service will be slicker, quicker, a little more expensive and a lot less personal. But isn't that the story on most all progress? "Over the phone, we've become like one big family here," operator Virginia Thomas, 52, was saying recently as she was connecting and disconnecting callers. "There's a closeness that's developed that we're all bound to miss when we go dial." "Just a second," she said, adjusting her head set and swiveling in her chair back toward the suddenly alive switchboard. "Grand River. Who? Well, she's not at home right now, but she should be back before long. . . she just ran to town. . . yes, I’ll tell her."As the end draws near, Thomas and the five other operators who take turns at the board find themselves frequently answering questions for strangers who drop in. They come for one last peek at yesteryear. Have a great week!

LINDA BOOTHE The “Davis City Sista’s’ met on Wednesday for their weekly coffee. It was blistery cold but we all were able to attend. Our discussion turned to Spring, at one point, and planting our flowers and how to care for them. Maybe we jumped the gun just a little because by Friday we were anticipating 6-9 inches of snow and blizzard conditions. Sure enough…Friday brought the snow and cold and cancellations for all of Iowa. My family had planned… for the second time, our Christmas gathering. Once again, it was cancelled due to road conditions for those of us that needed to travel. Our original plan was to attend the ISU basketball game in Ames and then all of us would meet at Chris and Tracey Boothe’s for all of us to be together. We decided to reschedule in the next couple of weeks so prepare yourself for another blizzard around the 29th….just sayin’. So I cozied under my blanket and reclined and watched the ISU game on TV. While sitting and thinking about all this snow, I wrote this little poem to the tune of ‘The Wheels on the Bus go round and round’. (…and to add some humor to these dreadful winter days). The temps in Iowa go up and down, up and down, up and down. The snow in Iowa comes down, down, down, all through the day. The winds in Iowa go blowing around, blowing around, blowing around. The kids in Iowa slide down, down, down, all through the town. We dream about spring with flowers and heat, flowers and heat, flowers and heat. We dream about spring with flowers and heat and the temps in Iowa that are hard to beat. (Apologize for my attempt to poetry… hope it made you smile anyway…lol) Machelle Clark, Ryan Tharp, Kelli Hinds, Judy Kuster, Mark Graham, Lisa Hullinger, Bryce Cozad, Alyssa Reed, Tracey Boothe, Joyce Binning, Joe Lewis, Karen Zion

LIZ CARPENTER With the win over Pittsburgh Sunday evening, the Kansas City Chiefs are one step closer to the Super Bowl! Go Chiefs! We are already halfway through January and speeding towards February, and you know what February second is - Groundhog Day! We have only had a couple of measurable snows so far this winter and a few days of bitter cold weather. Let’s hope Punxsutawney Phil does not see his shadow, and we can move on to spring and warmer weather. Axel Lane has enjoyed playing in the snow at babysitter Chrissy Wiig’s. Snow is definitely good for having fun. Axel’s folks, Cassie Daleske and Andrew Lane haven’t enjoyed the snow quite as much as Axel. They have both been a little under the weather this ARLY they are week. WeEhope feeling better soon. Donna Ogier’s furnace quit last Sunday night. Fortunately the repairman came an hour after she called on Monday. She says it was a bit chilly even with 3 electric heaters and all their blankets. A new part was installed on Tuesday and all is

now well. Good thing too, as it is going to get really cold this week! Philinda Snethen had a nice visit with Dr. Julie Snethen on Thursday and another visit with Kay Herring on Friday as well as Amy McBirnie. She also had a text visit with Liz Carpenter. Cotton and Coy Osborn stayed all night Saturday night with Grandpa and Grandma Gary and Sandy Osborn. On Sunday morning, they stayed with Gary while Sandy went to play with Cole while the boys’ dad, Chad Osborn, took care of the morning chores. Thank goodness for grandparents! Isadora Cote, daughter of Alma and Ronnie Mickelson, celebrated her birthday Sunday and she made the Graceland University honor’s list. Her birthday is the 8th prime number. Happy Birthday, Isadora! Ivan Lane had another quiet week at home. Give Ivan a call if you have a minute, then he’ll have some new to share! Liz Carpenter made a trip to Mt. Ayr on Thursday afterschool to pick up her Ranger from the shop. Bill Weable went along to keep Liz company. She is very happy to have her Ranger back home. (Actually, very happy is a huge understatement.) Have a good week, be kind to each other, and just a reminder that Valentine’s Day is only about three and half weeks away. Time to start thinking about what you are going to get your sweetheart - maybe chocolate or flowers or some Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia or apparel? Go Chiefs! (More correspondents on page 6)

County. In the rematch with the Eagles, CD again earned a victory, this time by a score of 82-44 and improving to 6-6 on the year. From the tip, the Cardinals were firing on all cylinders. In the first quarter, Central Decatur wasted no time building a lead. By the end of the quarter, the Cardinals lead 17-8. In the second quarter, the Eagles offense began pushing back, scoring sixteen points in the quarter. Fortunately for CD their offense kept up the pace slightly adding to their lead and scoring nineteen points to take a 36-24 lead into the locker room. Returning from the break, the Cards kept up the defensive intensity, holding the Eagles to six points in the Layni Masters drives around her defender for 2. She scored 14 points and quarter. By Reece Hill The Central Decatur Boys' Basketball Team visited the East Union Eagles on Tuesday the 11th, playing a rematch against their conference rival as their only game of the week. Their first match up of the season was Central Decatur's first game of the year, where they easily won 83-49. In the previous week, CD was defeated for the first time of the season, by Martensdale, and were able to bounce back the next day, winning against Davis County. In the rematch against the Eagles, CD earned a 72-38 victory, continuing to bounce back from their first loss and improving to 10-1 on the year. The Eagles were the first team to get on the board, knocking down a three point shot to kick off the game. However, Matthew Boothe would answer the shot with a three of his own that began a 12-0 run for the Cardinals. Trey Hullinger ended the

quarter with an andone layup, converting on the free throw and giving CD a 22-12 lead to end the first. In the second quarter, the Cardinals continued to clamp down on defense and extending their lead, outscoring the opposition 20-8 in the quarter. At halftime, CD led 42-20. Returning from the locker room, the Eagles went basket for basket with the Cardinals, but were unable to dig themselves out of the hole they were in. Heading into the final quarter, the Cards led 55-31. In the fourth quarter, CD again limited the opposing offense while continuing to build their lead, outscoring the Eagles 17-7 and earning a comfortable 72-38 win. As a team, the Cardinals shot 45.5% from the floor, including 39.1% from beyond the arc. At the free throw line, CD made 3 of 7 shots, good for

I'm a little on the sore side after this last snow storm we had. Not because of the shoveling and snowblowing I did but it was the fact I decided to take a quick trip down the basement stairs. Quick? It didn't seem that quick when it was happening. I had just finished up clearing off the walks at the office and at the old site of the J-R when I decided to walk the snowblower home to finish a few areas Mac hadn't got to with the shovel. I busted through the few remaining drifts in the driveway and

made a couple passes up and down the sidewalks. I parked the snowblower, grabbed the shovel, and proceeded to the basement stairwell. This open stairwell is a great collector of snow. Grandma used to have Dad and I cover it with a few sheets of plywood to help keep the snow from piling up, but I use that entrance more than grandma did in later years so I abandoned that job a long time ago. With my trusty shovel in hand I took one step down the stairs and then the next thing I knew I had one foot in the air above my head, the shovel doing the same, and I was reaching back with one arm hoping to break my fall and to keep my back from or head from crashing into the concrete. All the time I was saying to myself, this is going to hurt. It was just by chance that the one foot I still had on the stairs acted like a ski and I rode the steps down like a true Alpine skier. While I was slaloming down (or careening down more likely) I could see the closed basement door coming into focus. Yep I piled up against the door with a loud thud. I sat there trying to get my bearings and trying to assess myself to see if I was O.K. I guess I was. My arm and wrist was a little sore. How I avoided any serious injury I'll never know. Maybe I still do have those catlike reflexes. Ha! But here's the thing. As I was sitting at my desk Monday afternoon, I started feeling like I was run over by a mack truck. Ahhh, the residual pains have set in. Dad always told me that the older you get the more things hurt. He was right. Until the next time... So Long P.S. I did finish clearing out the stairwell.
