Wellness Week Postponed at DCH

Wellness Week at the Decatur County Hospital, which has typically been held during the week of Valentine’s Day, has been temporarily postponed. At this time, many health care facilities are responding to a shortage of supplies needed to draw blood samples and run lab tests on those samples.

According to DCH officials, they are postponing the Wellness Week to a later date so that they can maintain an appropriate level of supplies needed for the daily appointments and emergency services. Continue to watch this newspaper for an announcement in the future when Wellness Week will be held.

RAMADEAN ELLEN SHIELDS Ramadean Ellen (McGraw) Shields, age 92, of Grand River, Iowa, was born December 14, 1929, in Grand River. She was one of four daughters born to Harry Raymond and Alice Ellen (Owens) McGraw. Ramadean passed from this life on February 4, 2022. Ramadean was born and raised in Westerville, Iowa and spent her entire life there. She attended Westerville country school, which still stands on the family farm today, and graduated from Grand River High School in 1946. She married Carl Joseph “Joe” Shields on January 27, 1951, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Grand River, Iowa. They made their forever home in rural Grand River (Westerville) on her family’s century farm. To this union, four children were born: Michael Joseph, Thomas Edward, Jerold Ray and Mary Ann. Ramadean was a farmer and homemaker. Tending to the cattle was her absolute passion. She would be outside for hours, walking several miles a day, to complete the chores and ensure they were all accounted for. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were also her pride and joy. Chocolate donuts, Tang orange juice, kite toast and cookies were just a few of her favorite things to serve them when they came to visit, and it was very rare that anyone left without getting some sort of snack. She was also a fantastic cook/baker and a few of her recipes are showcased in cookbooks. She also helped with many church and community meals. Ramadean was a faithful lifelong member

of Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Grand River and was one of the first members to be baptized in the church. She served as treasurer of the church for many years and could always be found in her spot at mass, the back pew. Ramadean will always be remembered for her big heart, her caretaking ability, and her amazing stubbornness as she never wanted to bother anyone and always wanted to do things on her own. Preceding Ramadean in death were her parents, Raymond and Alice McGraw; sisters, Kate Burchett, Marilyn Boyd, and Franny Stephenson; and parents-in-law, Nelson and Pearl Shields. Surviving her is her husband of over 71 years, Joe Shields; children, Mike (Sherry) Shields of Grand River, Tom (Karen) Shields of Grinnell, IA, Jerry Shields of Grand River, Mary Gent (Mike Von Ahsen) of Waterloo, IA; her 17 grandchildren, Sondra, Joshua, Caleb, Jamiel, Miranda, Ezra, Jacob, Devin, Rachael, Leah, Shawna, Tori, Kristin, Nichole, Ashley, Paul, Aaron and all of their spouses; her 22 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way); sistersin-law, Cleone (Tom) Woughter and Virginia (Steve) Howard; many nieces, nephews, cousins and long time family friends, John and Carol Klein.

officially turn 70 on February 9th. Happy Birthday Fred! Services will be held on Thursday for one of our sweetest ladies, Ramadean Shields. Ramadean would often tell me how she and my Grandma Dorothy were best friends. I have a wonderful picture of all the girls together, I believe; on the Westerville bridge drinking sodas. Merna Van Larr, Dorothy Woody, Ramadean and my Grandma Dorothy. All wonderful women, and Ramadean was definitely a lady. She will be missed by so many.

LIZ CARPENTER We had another lovely February weekend despite Punxsutawney Phil’s prognostication of six more weeks of winter. The snow is melting and I’ve been noticing geese flying around. Springtime is coming! Donna Ogier got an early start on some spring cleaning and cleaned out some kitchen cupboards. She was a little astonished to

find items dating as far back as 2012. She has decided that stocking up is not always a savings when you stock up then find items 10 years out of date! Cassie Daleske, Andrew Lane, and their boys have been battling sickness while trying to feed cattle and keep everything going. Cassie is particularly happy we’ve had some sunshine and nicer weather. It helps make a person feel better and keeps everything running smoothly. Holly Parkhurst and her son, Benson, enjoyed their first snow day together last week. Amazing how the snowfall can vary so much just a few miles apart. Holly teaches in Bethany. Ivan Lane is still waiting for the weather to warm up a bit more so he can get out and about more. Jim and Jeanine Bradley stopped by to visit with Liz Carpenter on Saturday afternoon. Cotton, Coy, Cole, and Chad Osborn ate lunch Saturday with Sandy and Gary Osborn. All three boys stayed all night with Gary and Sandy. Chef Coy made a banana pie for their dessert. Starting early on a career? Everybody’s got to eat. Matt and Carin Dixon stopped by to say hi to Liz Carpenter on Sunday afternoon. Sandy Osborn stopped by Liz Carpenter’s Sunday evening to pick up some eggs and visit for a few minutes. Liz Carpenter brought the Optimist Club’s can trailer home to get it ready for another trip to Indianola. Dennis and Julie McElroy came down late Sunday afternoon to help pack it up and get it ready to go Monday morning. The more exciting news this week for Liz is that she is ordering chicks! These will grow up to be laying hens. They are scheduled to arrive at the end of April. Baby chicks are always fun! Have a good week, be kind to each other, and good luck to the Olympic athletes.

right? I’m thinking I’ll pretty much just hibernate until I see or hear a more accurate weather forecast. If you missed the boys basketball game with Mt Ayr on last Monday night, you missed a really good game. Both teams came in with a win on their mind and that led to a game worth watching. Exciting, for sure. Central Decatur left with the win and the crowd went wild! On Friday night, I streamed the HS game.It was a good game, as well, and I watched it in my jammies where I was warm and comfy. Shelly Poush Flora, David Griffieon, Dana Hullinger, Vince Snethen, Jennifer Clark, Bobbi Helton, Paige Toney, Bailey Hess, Trevor Waddell, Bob Bixby, Marvelle Plym, Nicky Pinegar Head, Bob Andrew and Peggy Hamilton are our birthday boys and girls this coming week. Send them best wishes. Who is Pete and why do we keep doing things for his sake? 442-3595 is the number to call to rent the DC Community Center….and thank you for being a friend.

37th Annual Legislative Symposium and FFA Day at the Capitol

Dear Editor

We are writing on behalf of Friends of Little River Scenic Pathway (FLRSP) to inform the community of our Purpose and Mission: to "plan, implement, improve and maintain our present and future trails in our community." Our Goal is "to promote healthy lifestyles (physically, emotionally and mentally) by walking, jogging, biking and cross country skiing in a safe and inviting environment on our trails." Trail activity increased during the recent pandemic, fulfilling that need while "social distancing". Trail development encourages and supports tourism and economic growth. As a committee of Leon Chamber of Commerce, our organization recognizes trails to be one feature that tends to enhance the marketability of a locality (town, city, resort destination). Property values increase because of closer proximity to trails. Walking/jogging and bike trails rank second from the top of the "important to very important" amenity list – behind highway access*. (Prepared by Gay Lea Wilson for Central Iowa –Trails Capital of the World). The original 1.5 mile trail extends from the Leon Fairgrounds to the south and then west towards Little River Lake. In 2021, (continued on page 12)

A lot of smoke. The fire was located and extinguished. We had all area departments on their way or standby because with these old buildings you never know what you will get into. Finally returned to the office around 4 p.m. and now I'm frantically finishing the paper to meet press deadlines. Such is life. All for now. Until the next time... So Long!

The students visited with legislators, exhibited skills learned in the agriculture classroom and learned the importance of citizenship. This was all part of the 37th Annual Iowa FFA Legislative Symposium and FFA Day at the Capitol. During the morning, FFA members gathered at the Downtown Embassy Suites and heard from Mike Naig, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, about the importance of agricul-

ture in Iowa and abroad. Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President, Brent Johnson, then delivered a message about the importance young agriculturalists can play in the agriculture industry. Elizabeth Burns Thompson from Navigator CO2 then spoke about the importance of advocating for the agricultural industry. The morning program culminated with FFA members hearing a brief message from Governor Kim Reynolds, who then presented and signed the FFA Week Proclamation. The proclamation officially declares February 19- 26, the week of President George Washington's Birthday, FFA Week in Iowa.

Cardinals Rally in the Second Half, Top the Raiders at Home By Reece Hill The Central Decatur Cardinal boys' basketball team hosted the Mount Ayr Raiders at home to start their week. This game, the first of four for the Cardinals for the week, featured two teams each with

a single loss going in. Despite a rocky start, the Cardinals (14-1) were able to top the Raiders (13-1) to improve to 15-1 overall on the season and 11-1 POI Conference. The game started in a back and forth fashion with the teams trading

baskets. As the quarter progressed though, the Cardinals struggled to get open and easy shot attempts. By the end of the quarter, Mount Ayr had pulled away a little, leading 9-15. In the second quarter, the Cardinals started to pull themselves back into the game. The defense tightened up and although the offense still struggled to get open shots, the Cardinals kept the game from getting out of hand. CD was able to outscore the Raiders 11-9, going into halftime CD trailed 20-24. Returning to the court, both the Cardinals and the Cardinal fans really came to life. As the fans raised the roof at the high school, the Cardinals seized control of the game. CD scored the first eight points of the quarter to take a 28-24 lead, a lead that they would never give up. At the end of the quarter, Trey Hullinger grabbed an offensive rebound and put a shot up and in the hoop as time expired in the quarter. Heading into the fourth, CD had all the momentum, leading 37-32. Throughout the fourth quarter, the

game stayed tight but CD maintained their lead, outscoring Mount Ayr 14-10 in the quarter and securing a thrilling 51-42 victory. As a team, the Cardinals shot 45.5% from the field including 23.5% from behind the three point line. At the free throw line, CD made 7 of 17 attempts, good for 41.2%. "We didn't start the game very well," stated Coach Curtis Boothe. "I felt like we were struggling to find our identity on offense. Thankfully, we made some changes at halftime, and we were way more aggressive. I thought our defense was the difference. Tyke, Gunnar, and Spencer did a great job on Frost." Individual stats for this week's games will be in next week's issue. The Cardinals hosted Clarke on Tuesday, Feb. 8 and on Thursday, the boys only travel to Woodward Granger. Post season for Class 2A - District 13 begins Monday, Feb. 14 with the boys traveling to Albia to play Davis County at 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to play Pella Christian at Pella Christian on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 8:00 p.m.

Six Cardinals mat took to the Saturday in Leon at the 2A Sectional 3 Tournament in hopes of continuing on their post-season trail, however, only one earned the right to move on to the District contest which will be held this Saturday in Glenwood, Iowa. Besides the Cardinals, five other teams made the trip to Leon. Atlantic won the team title with 263, followed by Creston 238; Clarinda 177; Clarke, Osceola/Murray 113; Shenandoah 80; and CD 66. Senior Tegan Carson (220) was the lone CD wrestler to advance. Carson opened the Sectional contest with a first-round bye and then won a major decision over Miles Mundorf of Atlantic 20-7. In the finals, he met Tyler Binning of Clarke and secured a late period pin at the

4:26 mark. Neither had scored a point. Carson will carry an outstanding 42-1 record going into Sectionals this Saturday. He will open this tournament against Samuel Daly, a junior with a 23-12 record from Southwest Iowa. The five other Cardinals wrestlers that vied for a chance to move on to Districts included Cord Hamilton, Cody Morgan, Devin Adams, Odin Rivera, and Jess Niebauer. Hamilton and Adams finished 3rd, Niebauer 4th and Morgan and Rivera finished in 6th place. Hamilton (120) drew a first-round bye and then lost to Cruz Weaver of Atlantic by fall in 5:11. With only three in this weight class, Hamilton was not able to wrestle back for true second as Weaver ended up in second place. Hamilton finished the season with a 13-5 record.

Senior Spotlights

The 6th Man

Madison LaRee Leahy

By Maddy Leahy During one of the first assemblies of the year, you might recall hearing from Mr. Dan Johnson about being “the 12th man.” The idea of the 12th man has been modified to fit almost every sport, including basketball, making it “the 6th man.” The theory is that if the people not directly involved in the sport stay actively involved in the game with things such as cheering, the team on the field or court will perform better. According to 'The Bench Report', the number one student section in the country in 2020 was from California, a school called Los Alamitos Locos - a school that went undefeated in the 2019-2020 football season. Whether the school is just pure talent or pure luck, you can’t deny that having the extra support from the side helps. For the majority of you who have attended a CD home or away basketball game, you have probably seen the same thing every time. The first two or three rows cheer on the team, and anywhere behind that usually is silent for a majority of the game. When CD played Mt. Ayr not too long ago, the stands were packed. Not only is the school only a 30-minute drive from us, but they have also been one of our biggest rivals since our parents were in high school. This was easily one of the best basketball games I have personally ever attended. The entire first half of the boys' game specifically, the student section was quiet, only cheering for the occasional three-pointer or block. The halftime score was 20-24 in favor of the Raiders. I am in no way trying to discredit the hard work of our basketball team and coaches, but anyone who was there cannot deny the entire environment changed in the second half. After a short pump-up speech, by Junior Vinny Carcamo, the entire student section stood up on the bleachers and began cheering and

CD Drama Department to Present 'Radium Girls' By Reece Hill In case you haven’t heard the word, the Central Decatur Drama Department has officially announced it’s next production! This spring they will be performing the drama known as Radium Girls. Based on a true story, this play is set back in the late 1920’s. Some of the hot topics of the day were the “miracle cure” Radium, famous scientist Madame Curie, and luminous watches. Suddenly and mysteriously the girls painting these watches begin to fall ill. This story follows one of the painters, Grace Fryer, as she fights for her day in court. Auditions were held on Monday the seventh and Tuesday the eighth. There will be one final try-out day held on Friday the eleventh. Stay tuned for the announcement of the cast list!

Digital Media Joins Crier By Maddy Leahy As many of you know, there was a new class offered the second semester taught by Mr. Johnson and yours truly. With only 11 students and one class period, we have a very limited amount of time and have been struggling with what we want to accomplish in the class. Our plan was to bring back “The Nest” - a News Broadcast brought every week but with scheduling conflicts, that project has been pushed back until track season. Now, the members of the class are working towards a temporary new goal - helping put together the Crier. Every week, the class will write articles, and vote the best ones to be featured in the next edition of the Crier. The articles can be written about anything the students want, and can either be an editorial, a news article, or a student poll. Members of the class include Jeb Eslick, Adeline Stone, Gage Kelley, Nash Dykes, Gavin Smith, Aundeen Butz, Trinity Davis, Devon Newton, Ethan Schmidt, and Lane Leeper. Even if you are not a part of the digital media class, you can still write articles for the Crier! Stay tuned in the next Crier edition to view our first guest columnist, and be watching for the first edition of The Nest!

chanting alongside the cheerleaders. Not too long into the second half, the boys took the lead and ended with a score of 51-42 in our favor. The girls' and boys' basketball players at our school are some of the most hardworking athletes I have ever met, and I hope the tradition continues for years to come. However, I also hope the trend of the student section continues. So, as the basketball season winds to a close, our sights are set on track season. Ten returning high school athletes qualified for State Track last year, and three of the incoming freshmen actually won the middle school state shuttle hurdle race with the help of an incoming 8th grader. People from other schools often times discredit our “small country school” but in reality, our school has a lot of talent when it comes to sports. Show up, be loud, and have some spirit when it comes to our school!

Crier Announcements - Seniors, if you haven't already, fill out your Senior Spotlight!! - FFA Week is February 20th-25th - Prom has been set for April 30th - The Crier is looking for underclassmen interested in reporting the news about our fellow classmates!! Talk with Reece or Maddy! - There is still time to try-out for the spring play! The final audition date is Friday, February 11th!

CD Students Work as Paraeducators By Reece Hill Recently you might have heard that Central Decatur Schools have hired a few new paraeducators, but they aren’t just any random people. The three new paraeducators are actually members of Central Decatur’s senior class. Quentin Coffelt, Cadence Clark, and Maggie Layton were all contacted by the administration and given the opportunity to apply for the job. Working with the children not only gives the students work experience, but they also are getting paid. The students are employed in a substitute capacity, so they don’t work every day. They also only go when they don’t have any classes. “It has helped me realize that I want to be an elementary teacher,” stated Maggie Layton. If you are a student interested in becoming a substitute paraeducator, talk to Principal Dan Johnson or HR Becca Harvey to learn more.

access to the west side of the lake and the site of the future Savanna Hills Learning Center. Our proposal is to extend the original trail south, along the abandoned railroad bed to the Depot. Phase I of plan development is in progress, with an estimated $20,000 needed for survey and legal fees to secure permanent right of way. We have to be "shovel ready" before larger construction grants will be considered for funding. Nothing can happen until Phase I is realized. We also invite active participation in the project by sharing ideas and energy, time, and talent. We meet the 1st Thursday and 3rd Monday of each month at the Leon Community Center. Please join us in this opportunity to affect the future betterment and health of our community. If you would be interested in donating to this project, you can send donations to FLRSP, PO Box 351, Leon, Iowa 50144. Marcia Stephens and Kathy Smith FLRSP Members PO Box 351 Leon, IA 50144
