GRM Networks Awards $10,000 to the Central Trail FFA Chapter ®

GRM Networks’ Board of Directors awarded $10,000 to the Central Trail FFA Chapter to promote education about cooperatives. The award was funded by unclaimed capital credits of former GRM Networks cooperative members from Iowa. According to Iowa law, GRM Networks may donate the unclaimed capital credits back to the communities in which those

Senior wrestler Tegan Carson (220 pounder) joined an elite club at Central Decatur after he earned his 150th career win last week in a match against Aidan Laird of Martensdale-St. Mary’s. After pinning his opponent in 1:07 he became just the fourth wrestler in CD history to reach this milestone. He joins Wyatt Dale (2018), Kade Kelso (2017), and Adam Lyons (2005). He is congratulated by his dad and Coach Brian Carson.

residents lived. The unclaimed capital credits may be used for teaching or promoting cooperatives through education. “Cooperatives have existed for more than 200 years,” said Mitchell Bailey, CEO of GRM Networks. “Their longevity demonstrates their importance and the vital role they play in society. It is important to invest in our future. Through this monetary award, our Decatur County alone, $36 thousand was remitted, meaning you, a neighbor or a favorite local business could be in the database." Under unclaimed property law, when companies and other entities are unable to locate the rightful owner of money and valuables in their possession, they are required to report it to the State by November 1 each year. Assets reported to the State include uncashed payroll checks, abandoned savings accounts, lost stocks and more. "Each year after reporting season, the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is filled with new assets waiting to be claimed," commented Fitzgerald. "In an effort to alert those in Decatur County of their funds, my office has created a list of people and businesses with the top amounts of unclaimed property." 1. ROY M RENOE $47,650.99 2. Last week, Federal Drug Administration (FDA) revoked an emergency use authorization which had been given for monoclonal antibody treatments from Regeneron (casirivimab plus imdevimab) and Eli Lilly (bamlanivimab plus etesevimab), commonly known as BAM. These treatments had been used in patients with Covid-19 who met certain criteria as determined by their primary care provider. The formulas were developed to help fight an infection by making it more difficult for the virus to reproduce within the body. However, both Regeneron and Eli Lilly have stated that the treatments that they developed for earlier strains of Covid-19 are not effective in treating the Omicron variant without additional changes and testing. Because Omicron is now the dominant variant in the nation, the use of these two therapeutic treatments is being halted. Due to this change directed by the FDA, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has halted distribution of these medications to all health care facilities, including Decatur County Hospital. There is one remaining monoclonal antibody treatment (Sotrovimab) that is authorized to treat the Omicron variant. Just like past treatments, patients must meet certain criteria before (continued on page 10)

Machinery Shed Destroyed by Fire

Last Friday morning around 8:00 a.m., the Leon Volunteer Fire Department was called east of Leon to the David Benson farm, located at 20811 293rd Ave. in Section 29 of High Point Township. The Bensons heard popping sounds outside and looked out their kitchen window to find one of their sheds in flames. The shed was in close proximity to the home and other buildings. Garden Grove FD was called for mutual aide in fighting the fire. Farm machinery in the shed was heavily damaged and the building was completely destroyed. The departments were on the scene for about two hours.

from his conversation. He said he was just reminiscing and thought of Maurice and me. I reminded him of how he used to terrorize me. He is 5 years older and as a child, his tree house was right above my play house. He sent me to the house in tears many days with his pranks that scared me. Lol Dave and Carol Proctor took a 2 day road trip this week to celebrate their anniversary. Oh, you kids! 51 years and you’re still celebrating. Friday night was Senior Night at CDCS during the basketball game. I have a grandchild that is a senior (how in the world did that happen so soon?) Matthew Boothe is a senior and our family is so proud of him. Tyke and Trey Hullinger, Cauy Masters and Devin Adams are also seniors and these guys have been friends since kindergarten. Such a good group of guys. Continue this friendship with you as you go your separate ways next fall. What you have is priceless. We finally had our Christmas on the 29th in Ames at Chris and Tracey Boothe’s home. NO snow storm, NO slippery roads, NO wind chills. It was a beautiful winter day and it was the BEST day! Curtis and Missy took me and we attended the ISU Basketball game. Bless Curtis’ heart, he sat with me on the upper level and we had one-on-one time that was priceless to me. I watch the games on TV but being there is totally different. They stadium is full of fans. It is loud. It is exciting. It is way more than you see on TV. It was an experience I’d never had and I loved it. (You know, the ole country lady that finally goes to town…that’s the way I felt). Then the players ran out on the court to warm up. Our favorite player, #15 Carter Boothe, ran through all the warm ups with his team and I was overcome with emotions. Carter was on the ISU court! His play time has been limited severely due to being a walkon but he is part of the team. His shooting skills seemed, to me, to be as good as the starters and he was there and he is a supportive team player. What an experience for him to be a part of all of this. ISU students pack both ends of the stadium and during the game, they would chant, “Put Boothe in, Put Boothe in”. Goosebumps for sure. My grandson is on the ISU basketball team and I’m one proud Grandma! Then we went to Chris and Tracey’s for our Christmas, at last! All my family was there except grandson, Mack. Mack was in Arizona seeing a college friend and we missed him. My heart was about to explode! Too much

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor:

As a young girl, I would frequently recite the following: “I was born in the United States, In Iowa, and in Decatur County. How fortunate I am!” I took both pride and joy to be so blessed. In grade school I had excellent teachers, including Mr. Lee H. Campbell, who took a two-year hiatus from the state education department to teach in Davis City. He was my teacher. In the 60s my husband and I began serving as foster parents to a number of youth. Later in the 80s my family hosted a refugee from Vietnam and taught English as a second language to Hmong immigrants through a program established by Governor Robert Ray. My pride in Iowa strengthened. Now this pride wavers. As I listen to Iowa Republican legislators, I wonder what happened to “Iowa nice”? What happened to the desire to be number one in education? What happened to being welcoming and open-minded? What happened to Iowa as fields of opportunity? The 2020 census reveals that Decatur County is losing population and family income. This

is true in other rural counties. The focus appears to have shifted from bread-and-butter issues to what is happening at the border? Not how we can help those seeking asylum, but demonizing those who have come impoverished and marginalized. We resent any request to wear masks to save lives or to moderate the proliferation of guns in public settings, but feel it is our business to determine who gets to love who and how young women may determine the use of their bodies and their futures. It is easier now to look at the positive efforts of the Biden administration to build infrastructure, to send money to families, to send masks and test kits to individual addresses as reasons to feel good about living in the United States. Do I think Biden will make mistakes? Yes, but I do not think he will do so out of anger or spite. In Iowa teachers are being threatened with lawsuits and jail, wealthy corporations are getting tax breaks, and families in need of financial support are being limited in what they can have as their current resources. This is not a welcoming state for Iowa youth or for others who might consider Iowa as a place to live. Kay L. Herring 26980 Co. Hwy. J66 Davis City, Iowa 50065

Grand River

MELINDA MACKEY One thing that has fascinated me, is abandoned cemeteries. Grand River is no stranger to them. When you read the history of the settlers that have moved through, it really takes you back to a time when families had few choices. Here are just a couple Hazen (a.k.a. Old Funk) Cemetery Grand River Township, Decatur Co., IA with no tombstones. This old cemetery (also called Old Funk) is listed in the W.P.A. cemetery records. On a wagon trail south of Funk's Mill (built in 1853) a pioneer family was traveling through, and buried a child, the first burial. In the early 1850's land was secured for a new cemetery one mile east of this one. 11 or 12 graves (and 7 or 8 stones), names and dates unknown, were moved to the newer Oak Hill Cemetery. One man remembers that when he was a boy, someone showed him where the cemetery had been. No tombstones, but that the ground looked like grave spaces. Not much is known about the name Hazen but a 10 year old boy, Charles L., son of J.F. and M.J. Hazen, was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in 1876. Millsap Cemetery Grand River Township, Decatur Co., IA Nearest town: Grand River: There are no tombstones left in this cemetery. James and Eliza Hanna Millsap came to Decatur County in 1851 and owned this land. Some of the family burials on this land were moved to other cemeteries, although some graves were left undisturbed. One stone was found near a creek about 1948 by Lorine Warrick, present owner of the land, but it cannot be found now. Someone also remembered broken stones about 1900.One of the burials was a 10-year-old Negro boy of a neighboring family, Duane Thompson. On a 1904 map, the main east/west road (now gone) ran close by this cemetery. WPA Records state: 1. "No Vets" 2. John W. Millsap AE 49y d. 1884 "Millsap Cemetery, Decatur Township. Decatur County in 1880 and sooon after the portion of the line west of Humeston was turned over to the Humeston and Shenadoah, which extended the road west about 100 miles. In the summer of 1880, about July, the railroad company purchased of J.P. Kline, seventy acres of farmland adjacent to and south of the railroad for a town site. It was laid out on level ground in the northwestern part of Franklin Township. On August 3, it was laid out in streets and lots which were rapidly purchased. The main street was 140 feet wide. The proprietors of the town were formed into a company composed of L.P. Sigler, J.L. Young of Leon, and Drake and Hill of Centerville. Sigler is now the sole proprietor of the company’s remaining interests. E.L. Chase setting as his agent. The growth of the village was mostly in 1880 and 1881. Dr. Enos Mitchell built the first house in the town. Doctor T.M. Wall also constructed a house about the same time. Merritt French and family were the first to begin housekeeping. A railroad depot was soon put up and became headquarters for many of the townspeople. The railroad finished building their depot. Until churches were built, the people held Sunday school and all religious services in the waiting room at the depot. In 1980, Weldon celebrated 100 years. The depot displayed old antiques, buttons for men and women. The depot now has a new metal roof put on by John Wagner. The community center helped pay on it, as did the Weldon Christian Church. The city helped with material. The depot will have to have new windows. At a later date, we will accept bids.

Unfortunately, by nightfall the Chiefs had fallen victim to their own mistakes and lost the game. So, a season that started out pretty rough, ended the same way. Until next year, thanks to the Kansas City Chiefs for a fun and exciting season. Guess the next big thing is Groundhog Day! By the time you read this, Punxsutawney Phil will have given us his prediction. Hope it’s a good one as he’s making it on 2/2/22. Surely a date that special should bring some special news! Please keep the family of Veva Jane Parkhurst in your prayers. She passed away on January 24th. She was grandma to our Andover neighbors Drew, Clay, and Dylan Parkhurst. Dylan, Holly, and Benson Parkhurst spent lots of time with the Parkhurst family this week celebrating the life of Dylan’s grandma Jane Parkhurst. Donna Ogier made a trip to Lamoni Thursday and stopped in to visit her sister Jan Fisher. While Donna was away, the kitty decided to play and managed to unroll a whole roll of toilet paper through the house. Naughty kitty! Cassie Daleske and Andrew Lane are feeling better and that’s good news. Being down and out with sickness makes it tough to run a farm. Ivan Lane is staying close to home waiting for Punxsutawney Phil to let him know when the weather will be nice enough to get out and about. Big boy news at Gary and Sandy Osborn’s house that I missed last week. It seems that the littlest brother Cole Osborn also spent last Saturday night with Gary and Sandy and big brothers Cotton and Coy. That was Cole's first time staying all night at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s with the big brothers. Sorry Cotton and Coy and Mom, there will be no stopping him now! He’s growing up! Optimist Club members Julie McElroy and Liz Carpenter

made a trip to Corydon after school Thursday to deliver a load of redeemable bottles and cans to the redemption center. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and Forever a Chiefs’ fan, win or lose, yesterday, today, tomorrow, forever, no matter what! (With football season behind us, we now look forward to our other favorite team, the Kansas City Royals! They start spring training on February 16th! Go Royals!)

Are you ready for Old Man Winter's roller coaster ride, again, this week? Temperatures were on the mild side Monday with the mercury climbing near the 50 degree mark. Then, by Wednesday, we will be staring at 16 degrees with snow coming in. Got to love Iowa weather. oOo Reports from a few avid ice fishermen indicate great success at Little River. We are so fortunate to have such a hidden gem as Little River Lake which provides recreation all year long. oOo I missed my opportunity to take down my Christmas lights around the house and office again. It seems whenever we get the warm weather I'm stuck inside. Maybe I will be one of those that just leaves them up all year so I will have a head start on the next holiday season. Ha! oOo Mary has made sure little Alex is comfortable in front of a camera. He now says 'Cheeeeeeeese Burgerrrrr' before you take a picture of him. I need to work with him on getting comfortable with the other side of the camera. Ha! Until the next time... So Long!

The twenty-three teams that competed were split up into four brackets where they played a round robin tournament against the other members of their bracket. Each team competed in five straight matches with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the afternoon round. The teams which advanced to the afternoon round were Bedford, Nodaway Valley, Central Decatur, Wayne, Pleasantville, Southeast Warren, Murray, and Chariton. The final bracket saw Wayne take home the gold with Southeast Warren coming in second place. Central Decatur beat Nodaway Valley to secure a third place finish. The Central

Decatur team that finished third was comprised of Jacob Smith, Spencer Smith, Maggie Layton, Reece Hill, Wade Hill, Quentin Coffelt, and Matthew Coffelt. The Central Decatur team went 5-0 in the morning round and finished the day 7-1 overall. Their lone loss came by a single point to Southeast Warren in the semi-final round. LEON WATER SUPPLY Has Levels of Total Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) Above Drinking Water Standards Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results we received on January 5, 2022 show that our system exceeds the standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for Total Haloacetic Acids (HAA5). The standard for Total Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) is 0.060 mg/L. The average level of total haloacetic acids over the last year was 0.061 mg/L. What should I do? • You DO NOT need to use an alternative (e.g., bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor. What does this mean? This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing haloacetic acids in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer. What happened? What is being done? Leon Water Supply has taken the following actions in attempt to prevent exceeding the MCL for haloacetic acids: The water department has subsequentially flushed all of the fire hydrants in the system to provide fresher water in the water mains. The water department is making valving changes in the distribution system in order to allow fresher water to flow into the water mains in the area of the sampling location. We are communicating with the Iowa DNR to help us pick the best treatment strategy to reduce the HAA5 levels. For more information, please contact Leon City Hall at 641/446-6221 between the following hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. This notice is being sent to you by LEON WATER SUPPLY PWSID#: 2742076 Date distributed: 1/14/2022 1t1 Feb. 2, 2022 to participate in the fiscal year 2023 planning and economic development programs of the Southern Iowa Council of Governments in Iowa Planning Area XIV, consisting of Adair, Adams, Clarke, Decatur, Madison, Ringgold, Taylor, and Union Counties.
