Jubilee Year
by Fr. Felix Onuora St. Brendan’s Catholic Church Recently, Pope Francis declared a special Jubilee Year that just began on December 8, 2015 and he called it The Holy Year of Mercy. Indeed, it began with the opening of the Holy Door of the Basilica of Saint Peter at the Vatican City. This Jubilee Year of Mercy will end on the Feast of Christ the King on November 20, 2016. Compassion and pardon are the central message invoked by the Pope in his declaration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. He said, “Let us not forget that God pardons and God pardons always. Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.” So the entire Catholic Church is now buzzing with a lot of excitement over the celebration of this current jubilee. Some may still wonder what is a jubilee? It is usually a call for some kind of celebration or festivity full of rejoicing or jubilation. Because it is declared by the Pope, it also entails the grant of a plenary indulgence which follows upon a repentance and the performance of specified religious acts. The Corporal Works of Mercy includes the following: Feed the hungry, Give drink to the thirsty, Clothe the naked, Shelter the homeless, Visit the sick, Visit the imprisoned, Bury the dead. The Spiritual Works of Mer-
trict assignments are out and we will play at Lenox the first night versus Mormon Trail and at Nodaway Valley the second night. Third round will be at Mt Ayr. cy includes the following: Admonish the sinner, Instruct the ignorant, Counsel the doubtful, Comfort the sorrowful, Bear wrongs patiently, Forgive all injuries, Pray for the living and the dead. Everyone should pursue these works of mercy as individuals, families, Knights of Columbus, various committees, Bible study groups, Religious Education classes, youths, young adult groups and other parish organizations. A pilgrimage trip is also an essential part of the jubilee year celebration. At Des Moines, the Cathedral of Saint Ambrose, the Saint John’s Basilica and other regional churches have been chosen as the current locations of our pilgrimage sites. For all of us who may start our journey from the counties of Decatur, Lucas, Wayne and the surrounding areas, the nearest pilgrimage site for us is the Holy Spirit Church at Creston. For the pilgrimage to be a success, one has to fulfil the following: Walk through a Holy Door with a willingness to a change of heart and growth in faith, make a profession of faith and pray for the intentions of Pope Francis with the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist in a reasonable time frame, and seek freedom from attachments to sin.
