And just like that, in a blink of an eye, Christmas is over for another year. We must all be mindful to not let the feelings we have at Christmas end in one day, but carry those with us throughout the year. I know it is tough, at times, especially what the world is dealing with right now, but never lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. As we look to 2022 with much anticipation, we can hope and pray that better times are on the horizon. Keep your heads up and faith in your hearts! oOo I will say I over did it when it came to the eating category this Christmas. I swayed back and forth between Tonya's delicious divinity, soups, pie and other holiday delectables. Brother Cody and I ate our share of tasty morsels on Sunday morning that started out with a brunch. We both decided we are fasting this week. Needless to say, I was dragging Monday morning. Ha! oOo Grandson Alex has this Christmas thing figured out. He definitely brought energy to the unwrapping of gifts this year. But despite what was in the box, he would just as soon figure out all of the things he can do with a simple box. Ha! oOo The mild weather we had for Christmas and leading up to, was remarkable, wasn't it? I caught one statistic that said that Lamoni tied the high temperature for Christmas Eve day at 61 degrees. It was back in 1955 the last time it registered that warm on that date. While we didn't

get any white stuff for Christmas, we could see some wintery mix Tuesday. While going to work Monday morning I noticed that the State D.O.T. was out spraying the roadways with brine in anticipation of some slick conditions. Until the next time... So Long!

Advance Directives

If you’re someone who makes resolutions for the new year, we encourage you to make a resolution to set up advance directives for yourself and your family. Even though it's a difficult topic to think about, it is helpful to make plans before big decisions need to be made. Advance directive is a general term that refers to your verbal and written instructions about your medical care in the future, should you be unable to speak for yourself. Each state has its own law governing the use of advance directives. There are two types of advance directives: living will and durable power of attorney for health care. A living will puts your wishes about medical care at the end of life, into a written statement. Each state dictates when a living will goes into effect and can limit the treatments to which the living will applies. A person’s right to accept or reject treatment is protected by both federal and state laws. A durable power of attorney for health care is a document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make medical decisions for you. In many states, the person you appoint through a durable power of attorney for health care is authorized to speak for you

anytime you are unable to make you own medical decisions, not only at the end of life. Though this is a difficult topic to discuss, it is often helpful for you to make plans long before decisions need to be made. Making these arrangements and decisions before you are very ill can insure that your wishes are clear and followed. It also helps family members when they know your wishes in advance. Adult patients, over 18 years of age, who are admitted for an overnight stay at Decatur County Hospital can anticipate being asked if they have an advance directive. If you have an advance directive, you should bring a copy of it with you when you come to the hospital. As long as you are able to communicate your own decisions, your advance directives will not be used and you can accept or reject any medical treatment. All of this information, including links to forms to create your advance directive, is available on our website at www. decaturcounty hospital.org/advance-directives. To learn more about Decatur County Hospital and our available services, please visit www.decaturcountyhospital.org, or follow us on Facebook @DecaturCounty HospitalIowa.

Not many homes had laserdisc players. Most people viewed their movies from VHS tapes. But technology moves on and someone discovered how to compress a whole movie onto one side of a 4 ½ inch disc, much thinner, much lighter, much less bulky than the laserdisc. I had written a paper about the emergence of laserdiscs for one of my college graduate courses, was totally intrigued by the laserdisc, and spent about half my monthly school teacher’s salary to buy a player. We couldn’t afford many discs, as they were a good bit higher priced than VHS movies, but it wasn’t many years until they started appearing at flea markets and garage sales, and so the collection grew. TWICE TOLD TALES 20 YEARS AGO (December 26, 2001) The Memorial Tree was captured adorned with its honor lights on the Decatur County Courthouse lawn. The lights were memorials placed by citizens of the area. Anyone was able to have a light added in memory of a family member or special person in their life. The Central Decatur fourth and fifth grade classes from the Decatur Elementary attendance center gave the Decatur County Courthouse workers and passersby a taste of the holiday spirit. Music Instructor Beth Hall led them in Christmas carols of all kinds. They performed outside on the courthouse lawn for most of the event. Following a welcome and thank you speech by Decatur County Board of Supervisor Chairman, Gary Stripe, the entire group entered the building to sing to those who could not hear them outside. Cardinals .500 at the Break

Kylee Rockhold lead the scoring with 13 of the 27 points against Chariton and 11 against Lenox. By Reece Hill The Central Decatur girls' basketball team hosted their final match up of 2021 against the Lenox Tigers last Tuesday, December 21. Strong defense and a solid offensive effort throughout the game earned Central Decatur the 50-32 victory improving their record to 4-4 on the season. The Cardinals will return to the floor on January 4, 2022, where they will host the Wayne Falcons. Lenox won the tip, but it took a few minutes before either team was able to get on the board. Hallee Hamilton scored the first five points of the

game, making a three pointer and a layup. The Cardinals' defense kept Lenox from attempting very many clean shots and helped to build a 14-7 lead to end the first quarter. CD was the first on the board again in the second, with Harrisen Bevan grabbing an offensive rebound and putting a layup through the basket. Lenox would answer the score before the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 25-9. Lenox ended the run with a two point shot, Hamilton added a free throw, then the Tigers scored the final four points of the half to go into the locker room with the score at 26-15.

Both teams made a strong defensive effort in the third quarter, each limiting the shots the other was able to make. In the third quarter, Central Decatur outscored Lenox 10-9 to take a 36-24 lead into the final 8 minutes. The two teams traded baskets late into the fourth quarter with

the Cardinals maintaining a 43-32 lead. CD scored the final seven points off of shots by Annika Evertsen, Lauren Martin, and Bevan. Central Decatur ended the game with a 50-32 victory. As a team, the Cardinals shot 37.3% from the floor, including 25% from beyond the arc. At the free throw line, CD was 6/10, good for 60%.

Vs. Chariton CD girls traveled to Chariton last Monday, December 20, losing 5727. The Chargers outscored the Cardinals all quarters, 10-5, 22-9, 13-9, and 12-4. " T h i s was a rough night for us offensively," stated Coach Howell. "We were a bit out of synch and out of rhythm. We did not shoot exceptionally well which made it tougher on our transition defense. By the same token, Kylee

Rockhold had good offensive production and led us in scoring with 13 points." "We had enough good shots to take but did not convert. Once we become consistent at finishing our shots near and around the basket, we will have much different outcomes compared to this game." Mara Dykes led Central Decatur in rebounding against Chariton with 7.

The Cardinals again started fast in the second quarter, this time scoring the first eight points of the frame. The Tigers again pushed back some, but were ultimately outscored 19-10 in the quarter. Going into the locker rooms, Central Decatur held a 40-29 lead. Returning from the locker room, the Cardinals continued to pour on the points scoring twenty-one in the quarter. Lenox was unable to keep up with CD, seeing their deficit increase by six, making the score 61-44 by the end of the quarter. Throughout the fourth quarter, the Cardinals were able to sit back and just keep pace with Lenox, being slightly outscored 1416 and coasting to the 75-60 victory. By Reece Hill The Central Decatur boys' basketball team hosted the Lenox Tigers on Tuesday December 22, winning 75-60. Central Decatur is off to their best start in seven years, having now won their seventh straight game to start the season. The last time the Cardinals started 7-0 was in the 2014-15 basketball season, where they started 9-0 and finished atop the Pride of Iowa with a 20-3 record. Central Decatur doesn't play again until January 4, when they will host the Wayne Falcons. CD got started fast, winning the tip and scoring the first five points of the game. However, the Tigers didn't just roll over, instead they went toe-to-toe with the Cardinals throughout the first quarter. The teams traded baskets, with Lenox even holding a brief lead, but at the end of the quarter, Central Decatur led 2119.

Start a Chain Reaction of Kindness By Maddy Leahy Not too long ago, I was in Casey’s grabbing supper before I had to pick up my sister from practice. In my typical rushed fashion, I walked in there, grabbed my Dr. Pepper and a slice of pizza, and got in line. Of course, it was the supper rush, and the line was backed up to the substation. In front of me was an older gentleman who looked like he had worked every day of his life. Boots covered in dried mud, black felt hat on, and Wranglers bluer than ever, the man noticed something off with another customer. The lady in front of him was carrying a gallon of milk, a few bags of chips, and a water bottle among other things. It was clear the lady had been through something rough that day. Tear-stained and mascara running down her face, the lady scrambled for her cash. The man grabbed his wallet and handed the cashier his debit card and simply gave the lady a hug and introduced himself. They didn’t know each other, but that didn’t stop the man from paying for easily $30.00 of hers as well as his own items. Since it is the Christmas season, something I’ve loved to do since I was a kid was look at Christmas lights. My family always made the hour drive to Jolly Holiday Lights in Des Moines.

A few years ago when we went to pay for our $10 fare, the worker told us that the person in front of us had started a pay-it-forward chain. My Dad gladly paid for the car behind us and is something he has started every time we go. (If you’re bored over Christmas Break, I highly recommend supporting Jolly Holiday Lights and the Make-AWish Foundation!!) Being kind is something that so many people overlook. It comes in so many different forms. From as simple as having a smile on your face, to paying for someone else’s groceries, I truly don’t see a reason why we all can’t just be nice to each other. Now, if you know me at all, you know that I am OBSESSED with true crime podcasts, documentaries, and books. As I was going down one of my many rabbit holes, I came across Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of Columbine in April of 1999. I did a little research on her and found that she was a firm believer in her faith, as well as being kind. One of her many quotes from her journal was: “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” So wait the extra two seconds to hold the door. Treat everyone with respect. If there is anything I’ve learned in 2021, it’s that life is short and you only get one go around, so spend it doing what you love, and leave it in a better place than you found it. Happy New Year everyone:)
