CD Drama to Present Radium Girls this Weekend The Central Decatur High School Drama Department, under the direction of Cierra Fountain, is proud to present the play, Radium Girls, at the SCIT theatre, April 8, 9, and 10. There will be 3 performances: Apr. 8 at 7:00 p.m.; Apr. 9 at 7:00 p.m.; and Apr. 10 at 2:00 p.m. In 1926, radium was a miracle cure— until the girls who painted watch dials began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for

Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month

Each year, April is recognized as Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. Annually, 60,000 Americans are newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than one million Americans and 10 million people worldwide are currently living with the neurodegenerative disease. Parkinson’s disease is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s, and is the 14th-leading cause of death in the United States. Parkinson’s disease is commonly known for its movement or motor-related symptoms which can include tremors; difficulty with balance, swallowing, chewing and speaking; and cognitive impairment. However, people living with Parkinson’s are often more impacted by non-motor symptoms like apathy, depression, sleep behavior disorders, loss of sense of smell, and cognitive impairment. The prevalence of Parkinson’s disease is expected to increase substantially in the next 20 years due to the aging population. Currently, there is no cure for Parkinson’s, but there are medications and treatments to live well with the condition. In the DCH Outpatient Clinic, we offer diagnosis, treat(continued on page 7)

Iowa Introduces New Quality Rating and Improvement System for Child Care Providers A new quality rating system for Iowa's child care providers, Iowa Quality for Kids (IQ4K), rolled out statewide on April 1, 2022. IQ4K is available for all DHS licensed Child Care Centers and preschools, registered Child Development Homes, and programs operating under the authority of an accredited school district or nonpublic school. IQ4K is a voluntary program that offers a way for child care providers to assess their current level of quality across all areas of their programming and devise a structured plan for improvement. The new system provides guidelines and benchmarks to help providers build off successes, identifying five levels of quality that can be achieved. After reaching a new quality level, providers will be eligible to receive bonuses and may receive higher Child Care Assistance reimbursements that can be used for any area of their business. "Iowa's child care providers want the best for the children, families and communities they serve and share our commitment to quality. IQ4K recognizes and rewards the progress they make, while offering guidance and incentives to continue these improvements," said Julie Allison, State Child Care Administrator. "It's a win for Iowa's child care providers, who will have increased support to achieve their quality goals. And it's a win for Iowa families, who will have the assurance that their child is receiving the best care

Grand River

MELINDA MACKEY We had a wonderful weekend with Wyatt with our 'all the holidays' dinner. We'll miss him a lot when he ships out! It has always interested me how families came to live in Grand River, where they are from and how they made their lives in Grand River, and in some cases; connected to great events. This is one of them. From 1887: "FRANCIS ROSS, farmer, lived on section 32, Long Creek Township, where he owned 110 acres of land. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1811, son of Thomas and Catharine (Lephart) Ross, the former of Scotch and the latter of French ancestry. He was a great-grandson of the celebrated George Ross, who signed the Declaration of Independence, and was one of the framers of the Constitution of the United States; also one of the framers of the Constitution of Pennsylvania. Mr. Ross was reared in his native state, came to Iowa in the fall of 1846, and to Decatur County in 1853. He was married in Pennsylvania in 1830, to Margaret Weaver, born in Adams County, Maryland, in 1810, and died in 1879, leaving six children – George M., Catharine, wife of Daniel Bryant; Margaret, wife of Uriah Gordon; Thomas, married Jennett Blunt; Jacob, married Julia Coffee; Elizabeth, wife of Darwin B. The caller I.D. at the office registered an out of the area number early Monday morning. Tonya answered the call and as I walked over to her desk I saw that she was writing down the name of the caller. It was Mike Binning. He was calling from South Korea. Mike, who is Vern Binning's son, was a best friend to Dad. I never had the privilege to meet him, let alone visit with him growing up. He was calling to have us include a birthday greeting for his Dad Vern. After Tonya took all the information down I asked for the phone before she ended the call. Of course he knew me by name, as I did him, but that was it. We visited for a few minutes and he took me down memory lane, so to speak, as I had only heard stories about he and Dad playing golf and baseball together. He caught while Dad pitched. I consider myself fortunate to have finally made the verbal connection with the man who called my Dad his best friend. Now that I have a contact for Mike I will make it a point to follow up and see if I can get a little more details on the stories I was told. Thanks for calling Mike. oOo I spent the day in Dubuque Sunday watching the Storm play softball. I'm a tad bit on the tired side. But what else is new. Until the next time... So Long

CD Girls' Track Takes the Gold By Coach Jacob Stamper After having their meet postponed by a day due to the cold weather, the girls came out and performed well on the night of April 1 despite the craziness of it all. With one coach home sick, and the other out of state, a big thank you needs to go out to a bunch of people. Bonnie Clark for riding up and back with the girls on the bus, Athletic Director Zach Clark on being flexible and helpful in ensuring the girls could go, Reece Tedford for giving up his night and being at the meet taking times, keeping an eye on things, and to the girls themselves for staying focused, stepping up into new leadership roles, and getting batons, tarps, meals, and times taken care of. Lexi Jensen, Mara Dykes, and Emma Richards competed in the shot put, Lexi took 2nd with a throw of 29ft-00.50in, Mara placed 6th with a throw of 25-04.00 and Emma set a PR with a heave of 20-06.50 for 12th. Lexi and Mara were joined by Preslee Jones in the discus where Lexi captured 1st with a 96-04 throw, Mara took 9th with 61-10 and Preslee was 11th with a throw of 57-09. Chloe Hamaker, Abigail Leahy, and Hadley Bell represented the Cardinals in the long jump. Chloe jumped to a 4th place

finish of (14-04.75), Abigail 5th (13-04.50), and Hadley 7th (1302.00). The high jump saw River Hamaker, Makenna Perkins and Izzy Triggs jumping. River went jump for jump with last years 1A state champ and when the dust had cleared, the jumps were counted, and a tie breaker had failed to separate them, they ended up tied for 1st at 5'2", a season PR for River. Izzy cleared 4'6", a season PR, and took 3rd place. Jenna Young, Hallee Hamilton, Lauren Martin, and Addy Schreck ran to a 3rd place finish in the Sprint Medley with a time of 2:03.95. Harrisen Bevan 1st (12:39.81) and Jamie Oesch 3rd (15:14.43) competed in the 3000m, running good times this early in the season. The 4x800 quartet of C. Hamaker, Leahy, Aniston Jones, and Bell took 1st (11:24.24). Each ran a faster time than the last meet which is encouraging! The shuttle hurdle was next and saw Perkins, Mikayla Morgan, Amy Potter, and R. Hamaker running. They took 3rd with a time of 1:19.77. Hamilton 4th (14.05), Mya Applegate 5th (14.73) and Nora Demassue 11th (15.55) all ran well in the 100m dash. A distance medley team of Potter, Triggs, (continued on page 7)

2022 Central Decatur Golf Team By Coach Calieb Kistler As the grass begins to green, the Central Decatur golf team begins to swing. It is incredible to think that we are now into the spring sport's season. It seems like just yesterday we were preparing for the basketball postseason. Now that spring has arrived we have started golf practice. This year, the start of the season has been very different from previous years. For starters, it has been an unusually cold start to golf. We no longer have our indoor golf facility to practice inside. And finally, 4 out of my 11 golfers will also be competing in track this year. We still have a lot of student athletes

who are very new to the sport. The boys team has 4 returning players and added one new golfer to the mix. Returning players are Matthew Boothe, Trey Hullinger, Grant Boyd, and Kole Jackson. The new incoming player is Jeb Eslick. Matt and Trey have worked really hard over the summer to improve their game and it shows already. They also will be competing in track so have a limited amount of meets they will be able to play in. But, we really look to them for our leadership and to be two of our top scorers. Grant and Kole are also returning players who golfed in a lot of varsity meets last year. Both have made some

improvements on their games from last season and will help to put in a good team score when Matt and Trey can be there. Jeb is very new to golf and is willing to put in a lot of hard work to make himself a better golfer. The girls also have 4 returning players and 2 newcomers to the sport. Cadence Clark, Maggie Layton, Courtney Olsen, and Ari Nopoulos are returning to the course. With Lauren Martin and the sole freshman Peyton Jacobs trying her hand at golf. We have some senior leadership in Cadence and Maggie. With conference medalist Courtney trying to improve upon her scores from last year.

Ari Nopoulos has a lot of promise in her swing and we hope to dial her in to become quite the golfer. Lauren Martin will also be competing in track but will hope to put some good scores of her own down. Peyton looks to improve as a freshman golfer and get a good feel for the sport. It's hard to say how the season will shake out. A lot of schools are in the same boat as we are. We are still feeling the effects of that Covid year. There are also a lot of communities that are seeing a decrease in families going to the course and a decrease in youth golfers. We just hope to improve upon our finish from last season.

CD Girls' Track (continued from page 6) Haley Oesch, and Logan Proctor took 5th with a time of 5:33.32, Logan running a huge PR on the 800m leg. The 400m was next and Bell took 4th (1:07.81), Bevan snagged 5th (1:13.98), and Young placed 9th (1:21.73). All ran well and all three ran a PR on the season. Morgan, Martin, Applegate, and Demassue all ran in the 4x200 getting 4th in 2:01.08. At this point in the meet, CD and Nodaway Valley were neck and neck on points and the meet could go to either one in the remaining 7 events. The 100 meter hurdles blew the door open though for CD to take the meet as R. Hamaker 1st (17.54), a life time best, and Perkins 2nd (18.82) ran amazing and scored some massive points for the team. The 800m was next and A. Jones 3rd (2:50.55), J. Oesch 7th (3:14.04) and H. Oesch

9th (3:25.30) ran hard with Aniston and Jamie running season PRs. Aniston made a strong move with 250 meters to go and almost pulled off taking 1st place against good competition. In the 200m, Martin 2nd (28.64), C. Hamaker 4th (29.57) and Proctor 7th (32.86) all ran season PRs, and continued to open the gap between Nodaway Valley. Schreck and Bell were up next in the 400 meter hurdles and their hard running earned Hadley a 2nd (1:18.15) place finish and Addy a 4th (1:23.34) place finish in her first time competing in this event. Bevan and Leahy took care of business in the 1500m taking 1st (5:49.70) and 5th (6:08.69), respectively, ensuring that CD would take home the win regardless of the results in the final two events. The girls still ran like every step, every handoff, and every second mattered. The

4x100 of Hamilton, Martin, Applegate, and R. Hamaker ran a blistering 54.24 for 3rd place missing 2nd by .6 of a second. The night was capped off by a hard effort from the 4x400 team of C. Hamaker, A. Jones, Perkins, and

Proctor taking 4th place in 4:55.34. The meet finished with CD on 164 points, Nodaway Valley at 139.33, MartensdaleSt Mary's 91.33, Pleasantville 78.33, Lenox 65 and Mormon Trail 30.

Rodger’s Recollections by Rodger Gatton A couple months ago, when visiting Presley and Larry Wood, I was talked into taking home a very old scrapbook, and some loose newspaper clippings, mostly from the 1930s. The scrapbook was put together by someone who lived in the Woodland area. I wasn’t very anxious, since I have plenty of the same such stuff from my parents and grandparents that I haven’t yet perused, but Presley insisted, and so it ended up with the collection of projects on my kitchen table. After a couple of weeks of looking at it and deciding to clear some of the clutter, one icy morning when I had no intent to leave my warm apartment, I picked up the scrapbook and pile of clippings, and started to look through them. Surprisingly, it didn’t take as long as I expected and, though I didn’t know most of the people mentioned in the obituaries and other stories, I rather enjoyed the task. Certain items stood out as good reasons for taking time to look through all the rest of the stuff. One of the best was a small clipping, what was probably a front page story about the death of C. S. Stearns, retired Garden Grove banker and owner of the Lady Amber Inn, recently restored as The Stag Inn, Bar & Grill. I knew where that clipping needed to go and I see it is now on the wall, in the lobby of The Stag Inn. A few other items I found were memories of the Stewart Funeral Home, one of them a picture and announcement of their opening, when 1500 people attended. That clipping, and a couple other items went to the Bill Stewart family, for their scrapbook. Another newspaper story told about an accident where a probable ancestor of Pam (McCarty) Cobb was killed, so she now has that one. Then there were the clippings about murder, mischief, and mayhem. I saved out a few of them before I returned the scrapbook because I wanted to read them more carefully. Some I thought interesting enough to tell about here. The story is from the mid30s and is a tale of woe about Hannah Gatliff and her son, Dick. Hannah was 87 years of age at the time of these stories, and her son was 62. They were both described as being bent and crippled with rheumatism. According to the articles, “Mrs. Gatliff, who is unable to walk, moves about the house in a chair, with rollers attached. Her son, badly crippled, walks with difficult steps, using a

cane”. The mother and son lived on 130-acre farm, in Morgan Township, in the southeastern part of Decatur County. Mrs. Gatliff had lived there since she was an 18-year old bride, with her husband, a Civil War veteran. Their son, Dick, had lived all his life there. Her husband had died nearly forty years prior to the incidents described in the clippings I read. One of the stories described how their home was ransacked by a couple of gypsy women. The women had barged into their home, when the Gatliffs heard them at the back door and called “come in”, thinking it was a neighbor returning who had earlier brought them breakfast. They usually kept their doors locked, since being tortured three years earlier, by bandits who attempted to rob them. That Sunday morning, the neighbor had left the door open to let in some sunshine and fresh air. As soon as the two women came into the living room through the kitchen, they were recognized as gypsies. The ladies told them they’d come to bless their home. One of them said she was a doctor, and proceeded to give Dick a treatment. Though he told her to keep her hands off, she continued, and in the process was able to relieve him of $3 he’d been carrying in his pocket. After looking through dresser drawers, pillows and bedding, and searching Dick’s trunk, leaving furniture overturned and items scattered all over the floors, the gypsies grabbed their skirts about them and made a hasty departure, as Dick neared the telephone and announced he was calling the sheriff. Neighbors later came in and helped clean up the mess that had been left, and told the Gatliffs they had seen the women leave in a big car, that was parked down the road. The Gatliffs then resumed their former habit of keeping their doors locked. The Gatliff home was referred to as “a little brown house” on the 130-acre farm, but a caption under a picture, where it looked like a portion of the roofing was missing, described it as a weatherbeaten house. Another description was that it was a desolate place, bleak and wind-raked. Four months after the gypsy invasion, the Gatliffs were in the news again. It was decided by the Morgan Township board of trustees, after a request from Roy Perkins, a neighbor acting on behalf of the Gatliffs, that they be removed from their home for their own welfare and safety. Though neighbors had been very good about

preparing and providing food for the mother and son, they were barely able to care for themselves and had neglected to have necessary repairs made to the house, so it had become unsanitary. With winter coming, the board, composed of Al Hubbard, Bud Baker, and Charles Bellows, presented an order to Dio McGinnis, Decatur County Attorney, to have them removed to the hospital. Dick cooperated with the authorities sent to pick them up, but his mother had to be forcefully loaded into Slade’s ambulance for the trip. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, Hannah Gatliff passed away two weeks later, in October 1936, from dysentery and pneumonia. Dick Gatliff was moved a short time later, to the home of David Duffield in Lineville. Mr. Duffield was the administrator of the mother’s estate.

The reason the Gatliffs were assailed by gypsies and other robbers, even though they spent little and lived in virtual poverty, could have had something to do with the fact they actually did have, what was at that time, a small fortune stashed in their home. With some cooperation from the Gatliffs telling them where to look, authorities found $844 in old blanket (larger size) bills in a cardboard box, and enough other money to total $3500. I found the history in these 86-year old clippings to be quite interesting. Probably about a half-century ago, an older gentleman named Carmen Gatliff lived near the South School in Leon. If there are any Gatliff descendents still alive, I’d be happy to provide these yellowed clippings for the family scrapbook.

The purpose of this chapter is to beautify and preserve the appearance of the City by requiring property owners and occupants to maintain grass lawns at a uniform height within the boundaries of their property and on abutting street right of way in order to prevent unsightly, offensive or nuisance conditions. 52.02 DEFINITIONS. For use in this chapter, the following terms are defined: 1. “Curb,” “curb line” or “curbing” means the outer boundaries of a street at the edge of that portion of the street usually traveled by vehicular traffic. 2. “Cut” or “mow” means to mechanically maintain the growth of grass, weeds or brush at a uniform height. 3. “Owner” means a person owning private property in the City and any person occupying private property in the City. 4. “Parking” means that part of a street in the City not covered by a sidewalk and lying between the lot line or property line and the curb line; or on unpaved streets, that part of the street lying between the lot line or property line and that portion of the street usually traveled by vehicular traffic. 52.03 CUTTING SPECIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS OF PRACTICE. 1. Every owner shall cut, mow and maintain all grass, weeds and brush upon the owner’s property (whether vacated or non-vacated) and adjacent to the curb line or outer boundary of any street, which includes the parking area abutting the owner’s property, any time the vegetation reaches a height of more than six inches by the 15th day of the month in May, June, July, August, September and October of each year. 2. Every owner shall cut, mow and maintain grass, weeds and brush adjacent to the curb line, including the parking area abutting the owner’s property, in such a manner so as to be in conformity with and at an even height with all other grass, weeds or brush growing on the remainder of the owner’s property. 52.04 NOXIOUS WEEDS. 1. Every owner shall cut and control noxious weeds upon the owner’s property (whether vacated or non-vacated) and adjacent to the curb line or outer boundary of any street, which includes the parking area abutting the owner’s property, by cutting noxious weeds to ground level or use of herbicides to eliminate or eradicate such weeds. 2. The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and Iowa Select Farms donated $100,000 in toys to Iowa day cares through Henry's Heroes Little Farmer Toy Box program. These colorful toy boxes were filled with farming-inspired books, toys and learning materials uniquely curated for 1-to-4-yearold children. In total, 100 Little Farmer Toy Boxes were delivered to day care providers nominated by Iowa Select Farms employees and contractors for their care, dedication and support to those who work in agriculture. Teena Hash of Leon was one of the well deserved daycare providers who received one of these fully loaded toy box, nomated by Kailey Ryan, an employee of Iowa Select Farms. Story about the deliveries: "We set out on a mission to give back to day cares in our Homegrown Iowa communities to say thank you, but this mission has become so much more," said Ali Kraber, a representative of the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation. "We are sharing stories of just

how impactful day cares are to the generations in rural Iowa. Kids who will grow up to also live here, take over family farms and help rural Iowa thrive. What a fun way to bring things full circle by not only donating agriculture -inspired toys but sharing the heartfelt stories of the importance of our day care providers." Teena has done in home day cares in Leon for nearly three decades, she decided to dedicate a home in town just for day care to help working parents. "Teena always steps up and helps the community when they are in need," said Kailey. "She has dedicated a home in town just for day care, she makes sure kids have everything they need to fill their days with fun and creativity while parents work. She has such a passion to ensure our community thrives when day care options are limited. We just owe her a huge thank you for everything." Henry's Heroes was inspired by Henry Johnson, Jeff and Deb Hansen's grandchild and the son of Natalie and Jake Johnson. Each year, on Henry's birthday, Natalie selects a new toy and component of the program. For 2022, in honor of Jeff's late father, Laurence Hansen, and in celebration of Henry's third birthday, Natalie chose to give back to a critical part of rural Iowa and family farms: day cares and day care providers. In honor of Laurence's legacy, each Little Farmer Toy Box will include a set of John Deere collector toy tractors that features the beloved 1976 John Deer 4430, a staple in Laurence's farming operation.
