Central Decatur Board Calls on Iowa Legislature to Fund Public Schools Over Private Vouchers by Superintendent Chris Coffelt The state legislature is considering a bill that would create a system of funding for private “voucher” schools in Iowa. If approved, the bill would set up Education Savings Accounts that would allow public money to be used to pay for students’ private school tuition. The elected Board of Education of the Central Decatur Community School District calls on our state elected officials to reject this poorly thought-out idea that would only harm our schools, students, educators and families. While the measure is being considered in the name of “school choice,” giving public funds to private schools is not an appropriate use of taxpayers’ money. Private schools do not maintain the same accountability measures as public schools, as they can pick and choose which students they serve. If they believe a student does not fit their educational services model, they can simply reject their application.

Public schools, on the other hand, are obligated to serve all students and families— regardless of income, background, or additional services they may require. And, we are proud to do it. In our view, the socalled “school choice” does not so much provide choice for families, especially families in rural communities like ours. Rather, it diverts funds away from public education and further diminishes the investment of our state leaders in the fundamental core of what makes Iowa great - public schools. Some elected officials believe public education in Iowa has failed to effectively educate students. In reality, our public schools have been squeezed by a lack of appropriate funding over the past decade, at a time when inflation and rising expenses exceed revenues. Schools have to do much more with fewer resources due to restrictive fiscal decisions made at the state level. It’s not too late to fix this problem, but we must move quickly. We

already have a model in our state that discourages people who would be great teachers from entering education, rather than allowing them to embark on a rewarding career serving our schools and students. As a locally elected school board, we fully support school choice for students and families. This has existed for years via Iowa’s successful and highly popular open enrollment program. Through the program, families can choose to enroll their children in public schools outside their attendance area. School districts “compete” for students through open enrollment, which we believe makes all our schools better. Despite all the challenges presented to them, Iowa’s public schools continue to do an incredible job meeting the needs of all learners. We call on the state legislature to provide fair funding to our state’s public schools and not make the situation worse by choosing to fund private voucher schools.

Local Author Writes 'Letters From the War'

Melissa Ressler has written a book titled "Letters From the War," compiled from letters of her grandfather Charles Imhoff while he served in World War II Melissa is a Central Decatur graduate with the Class of 1993. She is the daughter of Phil and Linda Miller and they resided north of Decatur City. Melissa now resides in Solon. "After working on this for years, my book is finally available," stated Ressler. "It is about my grandfather serving in World War II When he passed there was a box of letters that were discovered and I went through hundreds of his letters and wrote his story. It was a priceless adventure going through all of those letters." As written on the back cover of the "Letters From the War," After Charles Imhoff's death in 2006, his daughters were going through all of his belongings. They came across a cedar chest that had a cardboard box full of letters that

were written during his service to the United States of America in World War II. This book is about Charles's journey written through the letters that were discovered. Originally, Charles was a part of the 102nd Infantry while in boot camp; however, before going overseas, he was switched into the 18th Infantry Company C and was a part of one of the first waves to storm Omaha Beach, Easy Red sector during the infamous D-Day invasion. This book tells the tale of his war experience from the day he was drafted to the day he was shot and wounded. By reading this book, the author believes you will be reliving his experiences through the several hundred letters that were written during that time. Letters were

not only from Charles himself, but many families, friends, and the love of his life, Erma Horney. The Leon JournalReporter has donated a book to the Leon Public Library if you are interested in reading this book. This paperback book can also be purchased on Amazon or downloaded on Kindle eBook.

The Dock Awaits

It’s time, but where are all the boats and fishermen? Decatur County Conservation recently installed a new dock at the south boat ramp at Little River Lake. Normally, by this time of year, the dock is a very busy place, but not this year. Hopefully, Mother Nature will change her attitude and grace the area with sunshine and warm, gentle breezes.

SICOG Hires New Executive Director Southern Iowa Council of Governments (SICOG) is pleased to announce the hiring of an Executive Director. After careful consideration and several interviews, SICOG has hired Beth Waddle as the new Executive Director. She will begin her duties on Monday, May 16. Beth has over 20 years’ experience in economic development. The last 19 years she has been the executive director of the Adams Community Economic Development Corporation. In that position she has written and administered grant funds, managed a revolving loan fund, created budgets, written contracts, and has worked closely with re-

gional and state partners, sitting on various regional boards and committees. “We had several great candidates,” said Dan Christensen, Chairperson of the Search Committee. “Beth by far had the most experience similar to SICOG’s program of work and a proven track record in business administration as well as a clear vision for SICOG’s future.” “The Board is confident that SICOG is moving in the right direction,” said Jerry Walker, Chairperson of the SICOG Executive Board of Directors. “The search committee brought the board it’s recommendation after interviewing all candidates. The Board

then had the opportunity to interview their selection. The vote was unanimous to hire Ms. Waddle.” There are still two openings at SICOG: one as a planner and one as a planning tech. One of Ms. Waddle’s first major acts will be to interview and hire for these two positions. Then the SICOG staff will be back to full capacity. If you know of someone who would be an asset in these positions, please have them check out the job descriptions at sicog. com. Walker continued, “know that SICOG is here to serve our region. We continue to work for each of our communities and counties. Please call the office at 641-7828491 and let the staff know what projects your community is working on.

AI Certification School Hosted for Local Agriculture Students

Bringing Back "Who Is This?"

Does everyone remember the "Who Is This?" section of the Leon Journal? It is going to make a come back in some form or another. Anyone may submit an early childhood picture. With the submitted photo indicate who the person is and give at least three clues that could aid in identifying the individual. Readers may call in to the LJR's office with their guesses. By the way, the FIRST person to COME INTO THE OFFICE with the correct guess each week will win a free slice of pizza and a fountain drink, provided by Shelli's Short Stop.

On March 25-26 agriculture instructors from the surrounding schools hosted an AI Certification School that was made possible by Genex. Five schools including Mormon Trail Community School, Clarke Community School, Lamoni Community School and Central Decatur Community School offered students the chance to attend the school, which was held at the Lamoni Livestock Auction in Lamoni, IA. The participants utilized the AI Training Manual provided by Genex to gain knowledge of reproductive anatomy, estrous cycles, heat detection, semen collection and handling, care of the semen tank, and how to inseminate. Each student learned how to apply the skills from the AI Certification Training by working with AI Technicians, Ty Hunt, Jon Rockhold, Daryn Yoder, and Nate Pierschbacher. Each student had the chance to practice insemination on multiple cows and begin building their own AI Plan.

RONALD ALLEN TELLIER Ronald Allen Tellier, age 76, of Davis City, Iowa, the son of Ervil Wayne and Bernice Lucille (Still) Tellier, was born June 6, 1945, in Decatur County, Iowa. He died at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr, Iowa on Saturday, April 2, 2022. He was known as both Ron and Frog. He grew up and started attending school at the Davis City School. He graduated from high school in Leon, Iowa in 1963. He entered the United States Army in 1967, and completed his obligation in 1971. Upon his honorable discharge he came back to Davis City and started farming with his dad until his death in 1989. Ron continued operating the farm on his own with a cow/calf operation where he sold registered stock. Over the years he also sold seed for various seed companies and sold Firestone tires. Ron was married to Donna Sue Combs in 1970, in Kansas City, Kansas. They made their home at Davis City, Iowa along with her sons, Rick and Alfred. In August of 1972,

Ron and Donna were blessed with daughter, Julie. In his free time, Ron enjoyed visiting with people where he made lots of friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with many of those friends over the years. Ron and Donna also enjoyed camping with friends and family. They spent many weekends being camp hosts at Slip Bluff Park. When they were not camping on the weekends they enjoyed attending local dances and music jams. Ron served on the Decatur County Conservation Board for a time. Frog made friends with many of the Amish community and loved attending the Produce Auction where he bought fruits and vegetables to share with family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Donna in 2017; stepson, Alfred Pinegar; and brotherin-law, Gene Combs. Survivors include his daughter, Julie Waddell and fiancé, Todd Boles of Davis City, Iowa; stepson, Rick Pinegar and Carolyn Hulett of Leon, Iowa; grandchildren, Cameron Pinegar of Chariton, Iowa, Nikki and Nathan Head of Redding, Iowa, Bailey Boswell of Leon, and Taylor and Stephanie Waddell of Davis City; four great grandchildren, Elizabeth Boswell, Hunter and Gunnar Head, and Nahla Boswell; brother, Chet and Jeannie Tellier of Canton, Missouri; Donna’s siblings, Ken and Pam Combs of Lamoni, Iowa, Sandy White of Osawatomie, Kansas, and Mike and Marcia Black of Hatfield, Missouri; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

DWIGHT EARL EDGERTON Dwight Earl Edgerton, son of Arthur Joseph and Esther Mae (Cook) Edgerton, was born on July 5, 1935, in Lucas County, Iowa. Dwight passed peacefully at the Decatur County Hospital on April 22, 2022, at the age of 86 years. In 1954, he graduated from Chariton High School in Chariton, Iowa. Dwight was the baby of the family. Having five siblings did not mean he was a stranger to a good day’s work. As a young man, Dwight worked a successful bread route in the Chariton area. Always bragging that he could out sell any of the other vendors, it didn’t matter the product Dwight could sell it. It was after high school in November of 1957, Dwight enlisted into the United States Army. While on a thirty-day leave from Germany, on Christmas Eve 1958, Dwight married Donna Lee Olson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg, Illinois. Dwight mustered out of the United States Army in 1963, as an E4 Specialist and transferred to the Iowa Army National Guard. Dwight was ordered to active duty in Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm. He continued his service until 1992, when he mustered out as an E7 Sgt. First Class. Dwight enjoyed being in God’s creation. He was notorious for finding excuses to go fishing or squirrel hunting with his favorite hunting buddy, Roland. Ed and Roland fondly referred to him as “Uncle Fudd” referencing his earflap hat he always wore hunting. Many hours were spent in the hunting blind or on the fishing boat. This love of nature trickled down generations to his great, great nephews, Ryland and Dean. Dwight was a wellrespected member of the community. For over 50 years Dwight called Lamoni, Iowa his home. He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge, a lifetime member of the VFW 6283 in Lamoni, and a member

of the Decatur Restoration Branch Church in Decatur, Iowa. For 30 plus years, he and his brother, Lloyd, operated Edgerton’s Grocery Store in Lamoni, Iowa. Many patrons came through the business. Dwight was in charge of produce and would regularly find tarantulas or snakes in the large bundles of bananas. He kept them in a fish tank in the back storage room because he thought Rolly would like to see them. Dwight always tried to see the good in everyone. He had a kind and gentle soul with a calm demeanor. But, at times, the “Irish” came out. His 5’5” stature was only a disguise. “There’s a time to be a gentleman and then there’s a time to be Irish”, he would say. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna in 1994; son, Donald Edgerton; wife, Shirley in 2019; all his siblings; and nephew, Ed Edgerton. Dwight leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Carol Logsdon Edgerton of Lamoni, Iowa; niece, Wilma Edgerton; great nephew, Roland (Samantha) Edgerton; great, great nephews, Ryland and Dean Edgerton, all of Osceola, Iowa; adopted daughter, Elizabeth (Bob) Bell of Lamoni; and many friends. CHARLES “PETE” GRAVES Charles “Pete” Graves, 87, of Gold Canyon, AZ, was born March 24, 1935 in Leon, IA, the sixth child of Earl and Nellie Ellars Graves. Pete would later become a big brother to four more siblings. He died on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. While Pete was growing up, the Graves home was always open to neighborhood kids to gather and choose sides for ball games of every sport. In the winter, just north of the home, the hill on Mill Street was closed for sledding for the whole community. All this activity was probably why Pete was said to have never known a stranger. Pete attended Leon schools and worked for various local businesses before going to Des Moines where he thoroughly enjoyed his job as a carpenter in the Des Moines Public School System. Pete married Dorothy McDonald of Chariton and they shared 59

years together. Preceding him in death were seven of his siblings: Betty Frost, Lou Gillham, Katherine Cox, Earl Jr., Jack, Bill and Dennis. Pete is survived by his wife Dorothy of the home; sister Vera Mills of Cape Coral, FL, and locally, sister Sharon and Dennis South; nephews Mike Frost and Kevin Frost all of Leon and their families. Numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends. When days are sad and lonely and everything is going wrong; remember God is with you, “cheer up and carry on.” (More Obituaries on page 3)

LINDA BOOTHE There’s wasn’t much going on in Davis City this past week so I’ll just remind you of a couple of events coming up this coming week and then I will tell you a story. Saturday, starting at noon, the family of Ronald ‘Frog’ Tellier will have a Memorial for Frog at the Davis City Community Center from 1:00-3:00 pm. Come pay your respects to Frog and share memories of his life with all of his family and friends. A meal will be served by the ladies of Davis City, Lamoni and Leon starting at noon. Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th, Davis City is having Clean Up Days. This is a reminder to get your trash and unwantables to the curb. The crew will start at 8:00 am on each day. Volunteers are welcome but to volunteer you MUST sign a Volunteer Sheet. Carol Proctor will be at the Community Center both mornings for your convenience. Once upon a time there were five friends. They called themselves the ‘Fab Five’. They enjoyed each other’s company so much that they tried to get together as much as they could. Through phone calls and text messages, they arranged a meeting for Wednesday. They met at a local restaurant and enjoyed a delicious meal and the pie was so great that they had to buy extra take outs to snack on at home. They ventured to a local green house to buy some plants but the weather was so chilly, rainy and windy that it didn’t seem appropriate for planting flowers. They did purchase a few basics for gardening and made their list to come back another day for their flower gardens and hanging plants. With cold toes and the thought of snuggling under a blanket and taking a nap, Lou Fry, Linda Boothe, Verla Cole, Sue Braman and Pam Kent all went their separate ways until next time. THE END. Shane and Teresa

have any information on that. If someone would like to do that and gets the ball rolling on it, feel free to contact me with the details! Have a great week!

Well, I think Mother Nature is either mad or losing her mind with this crazy weather. Isn’t it supposed to be windy in March, not April? Clay Parkhurst and Breanna Main just had more work and school and work this last week. They are excited to finally see some nice weather this weekend Donna Ogier hung her hummingbird feeders out and began her spring yard work. (Putting all of us in the neighborhood to shame or at least me. I am way behind on yard work!) Drew Parkhurst and his son, Keegan hunted turkeys over the weekend. The turkeys won this time around. Holly Parkhurst reports that Benson stayed Saturday night at grandma Traci’s and played with his cousin Kaislynn, and they had lots of fun. Making memories! Ivan Lane visited Donna and Tony Ogier Sunday afternoon. Liz Carpenter visited with Jeff and Dixie Evans and Jewell Evans Friday evening. They traveled from their homes in Hattiesburg, Mississippi this past week to do some visiting and cleaning at their home in Lamoni. Cassie Daleske and Andrew Lane got a few tomato plants planted this weekend. They also planted some corn, okra, and bell peppers, and mowed their yard for the first time. And they still had time for Shelby Lane's boys Mason and Kayden to have an Easter egg hunt with their cousins Axel and Kip. Fun with cousins makes for great memories! Monday, Philinda Snethen went to Des Moines and met up with her sister Kay Herring. They went to visit Paul and Linda Snethen. They were lucky enough to catch up with Mark and Deanna Ballantyne who were there to visit as well. Monday evening Philinda Snethen ate supper with Roger, Pat, and Don Boswell. Thursday after school, Optimist Club members Liz Carpenter and Philinda Snethen and honorary member Jim Coulthard made a trip to Corydon to drop off cans to be redeemed. They started off with a bit of adventure because the heat gauge came on as they were heading out of town. Luckily they were able to stop and get some antifreeze and that solved the problem and they finished the trip without further trouble. And that is a good thing because the trips provide the Optimist Club with funds to help the youth of the community! Some of the money from the Optimist Can Kennel helps fund the Charles O. Snethen Scholarship for Lamoni High School students. Graduation is coming right up! Sunday afternoon Liz Carpenter enjoyed
