The District 4 meeting of the state IRSPA will be held May 17, 2022 at the Hotel Patee in Perry. All local members may attend. Donnella Welborn arranged for students from Ms. Rosa Sondag’s plant science classes to present a program for the group. Ms. Sondag has been instrumental in writing grants and getting matching funds in order to build a greenhouse on the grounds of the Central Decatur North School complex in 2019. 20212022 Greenhouse Manager Julesa Suazo used a computer presentation to take the group on a pictorial tour of the projects the students are managing. This started with outdoor raised beds; indoor plants in the greenhouse, and plant projects inside in the Agriculture classroom. Cincie McElfish, Adriana Benda, Elly Sheets, and Chloe Hamaker also gave part of the presentation. In the past two years the students have harvested romaine lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, and cantaloupe. Much of what they have harvested is used in the school lunch program at Central Decatur. Extra produce that can’t be used at the School is given to the Terrace Park and Westview Acres facilities or do-

in 2021. The Unit met again on April 4, 2022 at the Leon Community Center. The hostess was Donnella Welborn. Roll Call — “A spring time tradition at your house” was answered by 5 members and one guest. Unit members Jean Campbell, Jan Chambers, Leonore Coffelt, Barb Dunsdon, and Donnella Welborn were pleased to welcome Connie Marker to our meeting. President Jan Chambers conducted a short business meeting. Secretary Joan Bolon was absent and her email did not arrive before the meeting, so no minutes were read. Treasurer Leonore Coffelt gave the financial report. John Dunsdon was kind enough to deliver to the meeting one of the two books that the Unit has given to the Public Library in honor of our deceased member Helen Flummer. Helen loved to travel during summer vacations from teaching; and was very proud to have visited all over the United States on bus tours. The books purchased in her memory are: “The 50 States” (colored map

nated through the local food pantry. Inside the greenhouse the students are using a hydroponics system to grow plants. Plants are grown in water and fertilized with liquid fertilizer. Prior to having the actual greenhouse on the school grounds, CD students started a Aquaponics system. This endeavor is in its 5th year. This year the class is growing Tilapia fish. The waste from the fish moves through a system before fertilizing the plants that are the final stage of the process. During 2021-2022, the focus is on growing buttercrunch lettuce. The students involved in these projects not only give presentations to adult groups, but are also involved in teaching sessions with elementary students. The girls brought succulent plants for each adult present. To conclude the meeting, Jean Campbell gave a demonstration on how to use a portable mixer and one beater to electronically twist yarn into “ropes” for packages or whatever use the creator wishes to use them for. She brought other examples of crafts that she has been working on. The next meeting of the Unit will be at 9 a.m. on May 2, 2022 at the Leon Community Center with Becky Helton as hostess. Anyone who has retired as a worker from L EAR a school is welcome to attend these meetings. We would love to have more people join with us.

LIZ CARPENTER Here we are halfway through April already! This time of year that means taxes are due! Hope you all have that done already. Holly Parkhurst reports that Benson’s cat had kittens this week so they’ve been watching them all week. They also started incubating some chicken eggs and are anxious to candle them this week to see how they’re doing. Benson will love the little baby chicks! Clay Parkhust says there is not much but work going on around his place. Mostly they were busy cleaning up around the house and the yard getting rid of brush when he wasn’t working at his job. Ivan Lane stayed pretty close to home last week. He did get out to check the cows and enjoy a little fresh air and sunshine. Drew Parkhurst is helping teach his son about turkey hunting. Youth turkey season started this weekend. His son, Keegan has been going out trying to get himself a turkey. He had some close calls but no luck yet. He still has some time to get that Thanksgiving dinner. Good luck, Keegan. Cassie Daleske and Andrew Lane have been busy with new baby calves being born. They both agree

it is fun to see them running around and playing. Cassie has 2 momma cats having babies soon if anyone wants any kittens when they're ready! Philinda Snethen was busy last week. Tuesday she went to Des Moines with Kyle Booth and met up with Kay Herring. On Wednesday night she had a pizza birthday party for Kyle Booth. Debbie and Stuart Silver, Amy McBirnie, and Liz Carpenter helped celebrate his big day. His age you ask? Kyle is the first prime times the fifth prime years old. Just a young fella. Happy Birthday, Kyle! There was some interesting conversation during Kyle Booth’s birthday party. Seems there was some pretty nefarious activity in the Davis City area many, many decades ago. Need to visit the Lamoni Chronicle archives again soon. Liz Carpenter went to Bethany Friday after school to take care of some business and do a little shopping. Friday Philinda Snethen went to Corydon and visited her sister Fay Andrew and friend Bob Mortimore. Liz Carpenter and Philinda Snethen enjoyed Andover Zoom church together again on Sunday. They also enjoyed lunch together afterwards. Donna Ogier is having possum troubles. She reports visits from four possums in two nights! The rascals like to chow down on the kitty food she has out for her kitties. Andrew Lane and Cassie Daleske stopped by Liz Carpenter’s Sunday afternoon to say hi as they enjoyed a ride around the neighborhood on their fourwheeler. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and keep cheering for the Kansas City Royals! They are 2 and 1 as of Sunday evening. Good start to the new season. GO ROYALS!

returned home from our Florida excursion I found one of my pellet grills end over end next to my walkin door of the garage with some substantial bends in the metal frame. For a while I couldn’t figure out what the heck had happened. Could Sox (the dog) got mad and pushed it off the deck? Well, after talking with mom, apparently we had some strong winds while we were in sunny Florida. The wind must have whipped through the deck just right and sent the grill careening off the steps. In any case, I finally had the time Saturday and

it was decently warm to be working outside. I dismantled what pieces I could, used a hammer and pounded out the bends on my vise. The brackets holding the shelf were bent at right angles and I managed to correct them so the shelf sits level again. There was one bend, however, that gave me some fits. It was in the smoke stack. I wasn’t sure how I was going to hammer it straight so I got the idea of starting the grill, letting it heat up, and low and behold, the metal stack became

According to Iowa law, GRM Networks may donate the unclaimed capital credits back to the communities in which those residents lived. The unclaimed capital credits may be used for teaching or promoting cooperatives through education. "For more than 200 years, cooperatives have demonstrated the

significant role they hold in society," said Mitchell Bailey, CEO of GRM Networks. "A cooperative ourself, we understand firsthand the value cooperatives provide to their communities and we are proud of the opportunities we are able to offer our youth. Through this monetary award, our next generation and future leaders will develop cooperative -minded projects that provide hands-on learning, enabling them to observe the cooperative structure and experience the economic and social benefits cooperatives provide. We look forward to seeing the projects the Lamoni FFA and Mormon Trail FFA students develop."

Great Weather Yields Large Crowd for Leon Easter Celebration

Josie, Betty, and Louis Stoner enjoyed the Easter Bunny during the Leon Easter Celebration. The annual Leon Easter Celebration had much welcomed weather and many youngsters hunting the 5,000 Easter eggs, along with bubbles, stuffed animals, and more, scattered on the courthouse lawn last Saturday. This event was sponsored by the Leon Chamber of Commerce and assisted by SIRF. The egg hunt began right after announc-

ing the Leon Library Coloring Contest Winners. Following the egg hunt, many people of all ages, enjoyed the cake walk, a make and take craft, bean bag toss, hop scotch and face painting. A special appearance from the Easter Bunny made it possible for all the kiddos to snap a photo with the Hoppy Guy! An Easter bunny fireman was also found

of the year came in Chariton where they placed seventh of eighteen teams. They also finished fourth of twenty-four teams at Southeast Warren and had two third place finishes in competitions. Their best result was a second place finish at the first Pride of Iowa competition. Though their season has ended, the students are trying to put together a for fun competition against some of the teachers at the high school. The date of the event is yet to be determined. The academic team will be graduating nine seniors at the end of the school year, so if you are an underclassman interested in joining, it is greatly encouraged. If you would like to join or have any questions, talk to high school librarian Mrs. Becky Andrews.

CD Drama Department Presents Radium Girls

By Reece Hill Over the weekend, the Central Decatur Drama Department performed their spring play selection: Radium Girls. Radium Girls tells the story of Grace Fryer and the other ladies dubbed the “Radium Girls” as they experience the horrors of radium poisoning and fight to take the US Radium Corporation to court. Meanwhile, the men of the US Radium Corporation do their best to cover their tracks and avoid legal liability as a result of the women’s condition. The story unfolds in one act as acts of bribery, corruption, and dishonesty on one side and the fight to survive, the search for the truth, and a desperate struggle to gain the backing of the public and judiciary officials play out on stage. Sadly, the drama department saw ten seniors perform in their last school production. With a big void to fill, the drama department is looking for new talent. If you are interested in joining the theatre, talk to a student in the drama department or reach out to director Cierra Fountain. The next theatre production will be the community’s rendition of Beauty and the Beast. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more information pertaining to the community play.

Get Involved at Central Decatur By Reece Hill Soon Central Decatur will graduate a class of fifty-seven seniors. With the departure of the Class of 2022, a good handful of clubs will be taking quite a hit. If you have read the other two articles I have written for this edition of the Cardinal Crier, you would have learned that the Drama Department and Academic Team will be losing ten and nine seniors, respectively. This student newspaper will also be losing the two students that have been running it the last two years to graduation. This only begins to scratch the surface of clubs taking serious hits at the end of the year. Certain extracurricular activities such as the various sports teams and FFA will always have a sizeable membership but without underclassmen joining, other clubs will simply cease to exist. Central Decatur offers a wide variety of activities to get involved in, and if there is something you are interested in doing which CD doesn't have, there is a history of students starting new organizations. I look at the classes under mine and see a lot of students who choose not to participate in any extracurricular activities and can’t help but feel that it is a real shame. There are many positive aspects of being involved in extracurriculars. These aspects include how good it looks on a resume or scholarship application but also the experience and memories you will make. You will also learn many valuable skills such as leadership, time management, and teamwork skills. Many scientific studies also show that involvement in extracurricular activities tend to improve your academic performance and both physical and mental health. There are many opportunities to get involved at Central Decatur, all you need to do is take the initiative to get involved. If you have questions, you can always talk to the club supervisor or our guidance counselor, Mrs. Kim Elsberry. If you are an underclassman that is not involved in any clubs or activities, join one today, you just might like it.

He is currently the GIS director for JCG Land Services in Leon. Congratulating the honor students, Buckingham noted that getting good grades is not always easy for everyone and encouraged them to challenge themselves and not be afraid to fail but continue to work hard to find success. Buckingham noted that good attendance, accountability, dependability, responsibility, selfdiscipline and resilience leads to a good professional reputation and success in the future.
