LOCALS Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa, recently announced the names of students named to the 2015 Fall President’s List, Honor’s List and Dean’s List. To be included on the President’s List, a student must attain a perfect 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The following students were named to the President’s List: Raegan Boothe, of Leon. DEATH NOTICE BRAY, Owen Elwood, 83, from Leon, Iowa, died on Thursday, December 31, 2015. Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, Iowa, with Reverend Bob Leonard officiating. Interment was held in the Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa. PERSALL, Catherine “Katie” Marie, 57, of Lamoni, Iowa, died at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon on Saturday, December 19, 2015. Memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa, with Dwight Hines and Kelly Everett officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:30 P.M. Arrangements are through Slade-O’Donell Funeral Home in Leon and Lamoni, Iowa. Interment will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Memorial Fund has been established for the Graceland Gadets Dance Team.

OBITUARIES
DONALD BOWMAN HORN Donald Bowman Horn, age 97, was born January 14, 1918, in Cambria, Iowa to Frank Noble and Grace (Bowman) Horn. He left this life on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at his Leon, Iowa home. The family moved back to Leon, Iowa soon after Don was born. He attended Leon Schools, graduating from Leon High School in 1936. After graduation Don worked in the Leon Post Office until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in March of 1942. He was attached to the Army Air Force as a Master Sergeant and spent two and a half years in Calcutta, India, at an air depot supplying General Joe Stillwell’s troops flying the Hump, fighting the Japanese troops in Southern China. After discharge from the Army Air Force, Don enrolled at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, graduating in 1950, with a B.A. degree. From there he went to California where he attended the University of California, Berkeley, obtaining a degree in Education. He taught English and was a counselor for Oakland Public School in Oakland, California for 17 years. He married Barbara Jane Carmichael, also a teacher in the Oakland Public Schools, in Carlsbad, California in 1956. Two sons were born to Don and Barbara, Derek D. and Roark R. The family returned to Don’s boyhood home in Leon, Iowa from California in 1969, occupying the family home his grandfather built in 1893. He taught English at Central Decatur High School for 10 years before retiring due to failing health. Don was interested in raising flowers and beautifying his yard by keeping them blooming most of the spring through fall and often could be found on his knees among the plants. He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized at an early age and was a member of the Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon until moving to California. When he returned to Leon he was a loving, faithful, and active friend. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Bill and Kenneth Horn; and sisters, Pauline White and husband Kenneth and Mildred Broman and husband Charles. Surviving Don are his wife, Barbara Horn of Leon; sons, Derek Horn
of Phoenix, Arizona and Roark Horn and wife Jean of Clive, Iowa; grandchildren, Shannon and Jon Erb of Leon, Megan Horn of Waterloo, Iowa, James Donald Horn of Iowa City, Iowa, and AFS son, Eugenio Araya and daughters of Costa Rica; sisters, Betty and Howard Lee Schoonover of Huntington Beach, California and Frances Mark of Sun Lakes, Arizona; sisters-in-law, Margaret Horn of Sun Lakes, Eveline Horn of Garden Grove, California, and Judith and John Alt of Vacaville, California; and brother-in-law, Charles and Carol Carmichael of Walnut Creek, California. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
ROBERT DEAN PIERCE Robert Dean Pierce, age 84, of Lamoni, Iowa, the son of James Henry and Jessie Belle (Cook) Pierce, was born June 15, 1931, at Ridgeway, Missouri. He left this life on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at the Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center in Lamoni. Dean graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1949. He was always good with words and spelling and was a good typist. He then entered the United States Air Force. He served for four years, his first year in Louisiana, two years in Germany, then back to Louisiana for his last year. While in the service, Dean was married to Greta Marie Salmon on October 6, 1951, in Missouri. They lived in Louisiana before his honorable discharge on October 15, 1954, when they moved to Bethany, Missouri. Most of Dean’s adult working life was spent working for the Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline Company, although the name changed many times over the years. He moved for his job, so the family lived in Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa. He retired from the Pipeline then he dove into his other interests. He started his own business, Dean’s TV, which later became Dean’s Cablevision. He had the rights to Lamoni and ten other communities in northern Missouri to provide cable TV. He later sold them and retired to take up golf. He loved sports and played slow pitch softball until he was 51 years old. In younger days, he tried out for the St. Louis Cardinal baseball team. While stationed in Germany, he played baseball on the Air Force team. Dean enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked birddogs and raised Brittany puppies. His loves were, Iowa

State University, John F. Kennedy, Bing Crosby, coffee, sweet corn, and Christmas music. Dean also had a great sense of humor. He was a member of a cable TV trade organization and was honored in their magazine. He was also a member of the Lamoni Country Club and enjoyed helping out there. Preceding him in death were his parents and nine siblings, Charles Franklin Pierce, Leland Ray Pierce, Glen Harvey Pierce, Lloyd Gerald Pierce, James Leonard Pierce, Asa Dee Pierce, Joseph Morton Pierce, Roberta Faye Bennett, and Alice Arvon Ragan. Survivors include his wife, Greta Pierce of Lamoni; children, Teresa and Chris Stoll of Lamoni, Tina and Keith Fine of Milford, Kansas, and David and Jennifer Pierce of Granger, Iowa; six grandchildren, Ashley and Thom Edwards, Brett Boswell, Kyle and Kallie Stoll, Chase and Danica Stoll, Jordan Pierce, and Hunter Pierce; great grandchildren, Sawyer Stoll and soon to be born, Nola Stoll; brother, Richard Pierce and wife Veda Rose of Grain Valley, Missouri; sister, Mary Jo Vandiver of Bethany, Missouri; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
OWEN ELWOOD BRAY Owen Elwood Bray, age 83, from Leon, Iowa entered the gates of heaven on Thursday, December 31, 2015. Born May 8. 1932, in Richland, IA, he was the son of Owen Minor and Mary D. Blake Bray. He married Charlotte Losey on July 12, 1951, in Burlington. Owen grew up in Burlington, IA and graduated from Burlington High School in 1950. He furthered his education through Olivet Nazarene College. He gave his life to the Lord at the age of 12 at First Church of the Nazarene in Burlington, IA. He pastored Nazarene churches
in Mediapolis and Carroll, IA and also pastored an independent church in Hannibal, MO. He worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, he was a painting contractor, owned his own car body shop, and also was a building contractor and developed Oakwood Estates in Gladstone, IL. He worked on an Oil Rig in Oklahoma. He went to Mexico as a missionary in Lucio Blanco, Mexico for thirteen years. The church is still in existence and he has been overseeing, as well as, financially supporting a large building project in Lucio Blanco for the past couple of years. The project isn’t complete but soon will be, with the Lord’s help! He was the author of, “God Is Calling; Take the Leap of Faith”, about working in Mexico as a missionary. His love and passion, later in his life, was the work in Lucio Blanco, Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Charlotte; two sons, Gary Bray of Kahoka, MO and David Bray of Burlington; one daughter, Diane (Bob) Leonard of Goessel, KS; grandchildren, Gary Bray, Jr. of Osceola, IA; Rebecca (David) Zeman of Harrison, AR; Gina Bateman of Gladstone, IL; Rachel (Jorge) Centeno of Rockford, IL; Sherry Bray of Burlington, IA; Kathy Herzog of Temecula, CA; Angie Johnson of Quincy, IL; Jeffrey Leonard (Holly) of Monterey, TN; Kayla (Brian) Hughes of Concordia, KS; Stephanie Robertson of Goessel, KS; Raquel (Dustin) Nairn of Norton, KS. There are many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren; many nephew and nieces; two sister-in-laws, Janet Dobbs and Janice Fritz, one brother-in-law, Steve Losey all of Burlington, and one sister-in-law, Patricia (Bill) Young of Ft. Worth, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Mary Bray; a brother, James Willard Bray; three sisters, Mary Frances Wood, Kathleen Morrison and Helen Louise Raines. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Paul Bray.
